“Treat” Yourself to Special Family Time This Halloween Finally, we have settled back into our regular routine: rushing the kids to and from school and shuttling them around town to after-school activities. Football season is in full swing and summer vacation is now a distant memory. The temperature is finally starting to cool off a bit. With the heat and humidity dropping, we can get back to enjoying outdoor family activities and gatherings with friends. With the cooler weather comes every kid’s favorite fall holiday – Halloween. It’s time to decorate the house with pumpkins, stock up on candy bars and lollipops, and take your little ones shopping for costumes. Pretty soon our streets will be filled with pint-sized superheroes, princesses, witches and rock stars. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture these precious moments, for these are memories that will last a lifetime.

Halloween Event Moves to New Location By Julie Levin
L
ots of tiny ghosts and goblins , superheroes and princesses
will soon be out in full force for Halloween, and parents want to make sure their trick-or-treater is as safe as possible. That’s why the City of Miramar is once again hosting its annual alternative to door-to-door trick or treating with a fun-packed, spooky event on Halloween night.
Thousands of costumed kids and their parents are expected to descend on the Ansin Sports Complex October 31 for the newly renamed “Halloween at Ansin Sports Complex”. The event, which will run from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., had previously been held at the Miramar Town Center but had been rapidly outgrowing the space there due to growing crowds and ongoing construction. The 24-acre sports complex, located at 10801 Miramar Boulevard, should help to provide the needed room for the little costumed characters to roam. As in years past, the event is designed to provide an option for youngsters, and parents, who don’t want to do the more traditional Halloween route of going doorto-door. “Instead of going out and knocking on people’s doors that you don’t know, they can come to a safe environment here and go to table to table and have a blast”,” said Lolita Dunn, the Special Events Coordinator for the City of Miramar. Kids are invited to come in costume and go trick-or-treating amongst close to 50 local vendors. Each vendor will have candy and other treats for the little ones, while also getting a chance to share their business with moms and dads. The setup ensures there is something for everyone.”The kids love the free candy, and the parents go home with information from different businesses,” said Dunn. The yearly event has long been popular not just in Miramar, but surrounding cities as well. Last year an estimated 8,000 people turned out at the Town Center, more than the city was anticipating. “It was far beyond what we predicted,” Dunn said. There will also be inflatable rides for the children, food and beverage for purchase, and live entertainment for a spooky, yet fun evening. Dunn said it is an alternative that provides peace-of-mind for parents. “People just like having a safe place to bring their kids” she said. The event will run from October 31 from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at the Ansin Sports Complex, located at 10801 Miramar Boulevard. For more information, call the City’s Special Events Department at 954-602-3319.

Local Theater Company To Debut Internet Television Series By Julie Levin
E
ntertainment lovers will also
have another opportunity to catch a premiere this month. The locally-based theater Company, Act 2 Productions, will be debuting their new production at a special showing at a Miramar restaurant. Andre Sartin, the company’s Founder and Executive Director, says they expect a packed house for the showing of his internet pilot called “The Pole.” “We wanted to tell stories about eight kids, that relied on one another to get through school while dealing with many of the same conflicts,” said Sartin of Miramar, who wrote and directed the pilot. The debut screening of “The Pole” will be held October 25, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Bokamper’s Sports Bar and Grill, and it is open to the public. Sartin says his series, which will have eight episodes, center around a diverse group of high school kids that pray around a school flag pole, while dealing with different life situations, and each other. Each episode will focus on a different student, dealing with a different set of complex problems. “We decided to tell some stories about high school kids that have the same issues, how they settle conflicts in school, how are they different, and the camaraderie between them,” he said.
12
South Florida serves as the landscape for this inspirational series, and will feature some of the area’s up and coming writers, actors and cinematographers. Sartin says part of the purpose behind the screening is to find sponsors for the filming of the series’ second episode which will get underway in January,. One of the area’s premier theater companies, Act 2 Productions looks to deliver life changing, creative and spiritual messages through the performing arts. Sartin has written and directed two dozen plays through his career, and also runs a non-profit group called Act 2 Stage Productions. He says telling stories is his passion and he hopes film goers appreciate his latest effort which concentrates on important life lessons for our children. “Kids intrigue me, as far as how they handle themselves and are equipped for life,” he said. The screening for “The Pole” will be held October 25 at Bokamper’s Sports Bar and Grill, located at 15500 SW 29 Street in Miramar. The event is free and all are welcome. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. For more information, contact Andre Sartin at 954-274-8088, email him at drama1963@hotmail.com or visit them online at www.act2productions.net

Parents Learn How to Keep Children Safe From the Start By Julie Levin
F
or many new parents , the challenges of caring for a infant
and toddler can be daunting. That’s why a team of City, health care and community groups came together recently to help parents keep their children as safe as possible. They armed them with information at an event called “Safe from the Start,” which was held at the Miramar Civic Center, located at 6920 SW 35th Street. Close to 100 parents took advantage of the program. “Our children represent a significant and vulnerable portion of our community. We must arm parents with information that will ensure their children’s well-being thus safeguarding the next generation of Miramar residents,” said Miramar Vice Mayor Alexandra Davis.
LIVE The Miramar Social Services Department, Community Access Center and Memorial Healthcare System sponsored the free event, which included information on CPR, poison prevention, drowning prevention, car seat safety, dental hygiene during pregnancy, a boot camp for dads, as well as resource information from community agencies. Parents and families came out to listen to experts in the field during workshops, held in English, Spanish and Creole. “With Florida being a transient state, with so many at-risk populations, we really need to educate. You can’t tell people enough never to leave their child in a car alone, to lock-up cabinets and put things out of reach and put the baby to sleep on his or her back, “ said Madeline Wares, a Team Leader for Healthy Start, a grant-funded program at Memorial Healthcare System. There was also a separate break-out session just for the fathers in attendance. The mission was to provide them the tools to cope with things like a crying baby, stress, what it means to be a father and safe sleep. In particular, organizers advocated against letting the baby sleep in bed with the parents. “We really advocate against co-sleeping. We try to provide alternatives and different ways around this,” said workshop facilitator Jean-Robert Menard, with the Broward Regional Health Planning Council-Health Families Broward. The program, which was the second of three workshops, was targeted to families expecting babies or with children under two years of age. Miramar FireRescue had a fire engine available for photo and tours for the children. Other highlights for the event included gifts/raffle prizes, safety information and free food.

Mind Your Manners! New Class Teaches Etiquette Skills By Julie Levin
Y
our mother always told you to mind your manners , and now
a new class in Miramar is hoping to teach children how to do just that. “Manners matter if you are going to be successful in life,” said Geralda Larkins, the instructor of the new youth etiquette class. “Studies show that in order to be more competitive, it is not just academic skills. You also need to master the soft skills and know how to interact with others, care about other people and carrying yourself a certain way.”

Geralda Larkins goes over the finer points of dining with student Saffa Wilkes
The new Etiquette Essentials program is being offered for the first time this month at the Sunset Lakes Community Center. It is a weekly etiquette classes for children and teens ages 7–17, led by Larkins, the founder and director of the Broward Etiquette Academy. “We are looking to instill these techniques and skill sets at an early age because the more polished you are, it comes off as very natural and you come off as more confident,” said Larkins, a Miramar resident. The four-week program will cover a range of manners-related skills: proper introductions, handshakes, first impressions, dining etiquette, telephone etiquette, social skills, and more. The course will incorporate games, songs, videos and interactive role-play activities to keep the kids engaged and learning. As a sort of final exam, the youngsters will get a chance to demonstrate some of their etiquette skills during a three-course meal. Larkin says while they may be young now, many studies show career success goes hand-in-hand with good social skills. “Children need to learn proper manners and social skills now more than ever. With competition for colleges and jobs becoming even more of a challenge, those young people with polished, well-developed social skills, will stand out in the crowd and have an advantage on their peers,” she said. Class size is kept small, to make sure each child gets personalized attention. Upon completion, students can continue to build on their skills by enrolling in the Cotillion Program which pairs lessons in social graces with ballroom dancing. The four-week session begins October 7, with the children’s program for ages 7-12 beginning at 4 p.m. and the teen program for ages 13-17 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The program costs $135 for Miramar residents and $162 for non-residents. New sessions will begin November 18 and January 6. The Sunset Lakes Community Center is located at 2801 SW 186th Avenue. For more information, visit them at www.browardetiquette.com or call 954-543-0808.

New Travel Baseball Team Heads to Elite National Tournament By Julie Levin
N
ot even one year since
they started playing together, Miramar’s newest travel baseball squad is making itself known in the national spotlight. This month, the Miramar Sluggers 10 U team will compete in the Triple Crown Fall Nationals in St. Augustine, a well-known tournament that draws teams from across the country. “It’s a really competitive tournament, and we are excited to be going,” said Jesus Posada of Miramar, the Head Coach of the Miramar Sluggers. Created only 10 months ago, the Miramar Sluggers plays in the competitive Florida Premier League and has already claimed four championships including the July 4th Independence Day Baseball Championship, 2013 Team Draft Pick Spring Classic Tournament, 2013 Cinco De Mayo Madness Tournament and 2013 WBF Travel Ball. Posado likes their chances in the Fall Nationals, because he says his squad is already playing at a national level.”We have grown by leaps and bounds from where we were, to where we are now. They may only be ten, but they play at a high-caliber of baseball,” he said. Posada says he attributes the team’s early success not only to the talents of the players, but the dedication of their parents and families as well. Practices are held up to five times a week, so the young sluggers must make the commitment to train,
as well as maintain good grades in school. The team brings in a hitting instructor to each practice, as well as trainers. “We run this similar to a professional team. That’s why there has to be so much dedication between the parents and kids,” said Posada, who also credited the support of Crossfit Siege Fitness in Miramar, which sponsors the team. The trip to nationals is something Posada knows well, having played there as a teen years ago. He says this visit will be even more special because he is taking his own squad, which has performed beyond expectation. “This is the first time I’ve taken my own team that has had such success,” he said. There are more tournaments planned. In the summer of 2014, the Miramar Sluggers are hoping to go to Elite 32, the biggest championship tournament for travel baseball. For more information about the Miramar Sluggers, visit their website at http://www. leaguelineup.com/welcome. asp?url=miramarsluggers. You can also contact them at 786-303-0927.

Miramar Teen Makes Debut at U.S. Open By Julie Levin
I
t ’ s been a busy couple of weeks for
Miramar tennis sensation Sachia Vickery. The 18-year old right-hander took to the courts recently in her first-ever Grand Slam main draw match. Vickery made her debut at the U.S. Open in New York after earning a wild card as the reigning USTA Girls 18s national champion. She made it to the second round, losing 7-5, 6-3 to Julia Glushko. Her first round win put her in rare company at the U.S. Open. By beating Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, a former Wimbledon semifinalist 6-4, 6-4 in that round, Vickery became just the third USTA Girls’ 18s winner to advance to the second round since 1999. The win moved Vickery into the top 200 rankings for the first time in her career, and also made her eligible for the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. Vickery, who is currently ranked No. 187 in the World’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings and had been ranked as high as No. 6 in the International Tennis Association (ITF) World Junior Rankings, aspires to become #1 in the world.”She wants to win the Grand Slam,” said mother Paul Liverpool. Earlier in the month, Vickery was honored with a City proclamation at the Miramar Youth Enrichment Center. Vice Mayor Alexandra Davis presented the tennis star with the proclamation
20
declaring August 14, 2013 as “Sachia Vickery Day.” At the time, Vickery had just defeated No. 2 Allie Kiick, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, to win the girls’ 18s title in San Diego and earned her main-draw US Open spot. She then teamed with Kiick to win the girls’ 18s doubles title, defeating top seeds and 2012 US Open girls’ doubles champions Taylor Townsend and Gabby Andrews, earning them a spot in the US Open women’s doubles main draw as well. “Sachia’s accomplishments are reflective of the great athleticism contained in our City. Just as Geno Smith has made his mark in football, I see Sachia doing the same in the world of tennis,” said Davis. Sachia Vickery’s love of tennis dates back at least 13 years, when her grandmother gave her a paddle and a little rubber ball. The 5-year old started hitting the ball against the house, over and over again--and wouldn’t stop until she eventually broke a bedroom window . “I knew then I had to find her somewhere else to play,” said Liverpool. From that moment on, Vickery has since become a steadily rising talent on the American tennis scene. Backed by a tremendous athleticism and determination, Vickery turned pro when she was just 14 years old.

What is Color Blindness? By Michael Chesen, OD
C
olor blindness is a disorder affecting the
capability to see colors under typical light or to discern colors as they are normally seen. Generally, the condition is present at birth, but it can also result from old age or a number of diseases of the eye. The discernment of color depends on cones located in the eye. People are usually born with three kinds of pigmented cones, each of which perceives various wavelengths of color. When it comes to pigment, the size of the wave is directly linked to the perceived color tone. Short waves produce blue tones, middle-sized waves are perceived as green tones and longer waves are seen as reds. Which type of cone is affected impacts the spectrum and severity of the color blindness. Because it is a gender-linked recessive trait, green-red color deficiency is more frequent in men than in females. Still, there are a small number of females who do experience some degree of color blindness, particularly yellow-blue deficiencies.
Color vision deficiencies are not a debilitating condition, but it can impair educational progress and work performance. Not having the ability to distinguish colors as friends do can quickly and negatively impact a student’s confidence. For working people, color blindness could become a disadvantage when competing against peers trying to advance in a similar industry. There are several examinations for color blindness. The most common is the Ishihara color test, named after its inventor. For this test a patient views a plate with a circle of dots in various sizes and colors. Within the circle appears a digit in a particular tint. The patient’s ability to see the number inside the dots of contrasting colors indicates the level of red-green color sight. Even though inherited color vision deficiencies can’t be treated, there are some steps that might improve the situation. Some evidence shows that wearing tinted contacts or anti-glare glasses can help people to see the distinction between colors. More and more, computer applications are becoming available for regular personal computers and even for smaller machines that can assist users to distinguish color better depending upon their specific diagnosis. There are also exciting experiments being conducted in gene therapy to correct the ability to distinguish colors. How much color vision problems limit a person is dependent upon the type and severity of the condition. Some individuals can adapt to their condition by familiarizing themselves with alternate cues for colored objects or signs. For example, many individuals are capable of learning the shapes of traffic signs (rather than recognizing red) or contrasting items with paradigms like a blue body of water or green trees. If you notice signs that you or a child might be color blind, it is recommended to see an optometrist. The sooner you are aware of a problem, the sooner you can help. To book an eye exam for your child, contact Dr. Michael Chesen at 954-437-9733. Pearle Vision is located at 2909 Dykes Rd., in the Fountains of Miramar Shopping Plaza.

oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing
child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly felt during activity. It is also felt at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be felt. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Children that are sedentary, may become overweight.

Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight lessen or eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast may be necessary to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated. We have seen and treated more than a thousand of these children with this problem with excellent long-term success. enesis Plus is a safe , effective laser treat-
ment for toes and feet, which is provided in a private office setting. Proven to be both a safe and effective solution, as well as FDA approved, GenesisPlus treats nail infection (onychomycosis), more commonly known as toenail fungus. The most common sources of infection include swimming pools, public showers, gyms and nail salons. Tight fitting shoes and nail trauma can lead to infection also. Genetic susceptibility, poor health and increasing age are also factors that increase the risk of nail infection. It is important to watch for these common signs: ▸▸ discolored nails ▸▸ yellow streaks under the nail ▸▸ distorted or thickened nails ▸▸ brittle/ crumbly or ragged nails ▸▸ separation of nail from underlying skin ▸▸ build-up of debris such as nail fragments or skin under the nail ▸▸ white spots or streaks on the nail surface

If detected, you have become an excellent candidate for GenesisPlus. GenesisPlus passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue with no adverse effects. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the fungi, which causes the pigment to heat, and this kills or damages the fungal organism. The treatment can result in your nails growing normally. A single treatment session takes approximately 40 minutes to treat five to ten nails. Most patients show improvement after one treatment and total number of treatments can vary. Most patients describe the procedure as being comfortable with a small hot pinch at the end which resolves quickly. The majority of patients can resume normal activities immediately. Successful treatment results in new nail growth and healthy nails, which may take up to 12 months. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. D
ear M iramar R esidents:
For many of you who have driven on I-75 during rush hour traffic, you will no doubt believe that the South Florida region is considered one of the most congested areas in the nation. According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), as population levels continue to grow, it will become more difficult to keep up with the increased demand on the existing transportation network. To address their work on this issue, FDOT District Four held an Industry Informational Workshop for the I-75 Express Lanes Design-Build Project Segments A and B on August 15, 2013 at the Miramar Cultural Center ArtsPark. FDOT is working to address the issue by developing a regional network of express lanes also referred to as managed lanes. These managed lanes will provide for a more reliable travel mode with predictable times on the region’s major expressways. This network includes recently completed express lanes in Broward County on I-95 and I-595. Ultimately this network will include nearly every major expressway in South Florida. I-75 and SR 826 (Palmetto Expressway) are key corridors in this network.

FDOT has realized that both these corridors have become the vital north-south transportation arteries for thousands of Miramar residents and businesses by providing connectivity to major business centers and entertainment destinations throughout the region. The existing annual daily traffic on both corridors ranges from 111,000 to 220,000 vehicles per day and is expected to grow to 176,000 to 304,000 vehicles per day by the year 2040. FDOT, in collaboration with several other transportation agencies, has developed a phased implementation of corridor improvements. The overall limits extend along I-75 from I-595 to SR 826 in Miami Dade County. The initial construction will include the median express lanes with a reversible connection to I-595 and direct connections to Florida’s Turnpike. Additional intermediate access points to and from the express lanes will be provided for those locations that are currently under evaluation. Presently, the initial construction projects will provide one to two express lanes in each direction within the existing I-75 median. The express lanes will be separated by a concrete barrier and will include shoulders adjacent to the travel lanes. A reversible ramp bridge at I-595 will connect the I-595 express reversible lanes currently under construction into the median express lanes of I-75. This new flyover ramp will provide a direct express lanes connection between northbound I-75 and eastbound I-595 during the morning rush hour. The traffic flow will then be reversed during the afternoon rush hour to connect the westbound to I-595 and southbound to I-75 express lanes. Northbound to I-75 express lanes would exit south of I-595 in the afternoon peak hour. Between I-595 and Florida’s Turnpike, access to and from the managed lanes will be provided from the general existing purpose lanes through parallel median slip ramps. Electronic message signs will also be placed in advance of the entrance to the express lanes to display the current toll base on time of day as well as real time traffic information. We hope that you go to www.75-express.com to learn more about the great work that FDOT is doing to address today’s and tomorrow’s traffic congestion. Warmest regards, Lori C. Moseley Mayor

Legally Speaking
Don’t Try a Do-It-Yourself Foreclosure Defense By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. · Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
W
e have counseled hundreds of clients through the years ,
and the most significant mistake that homeowners make when faced with a foreclosure case is to wait until the last minute to contact a knowledgeable and experienced attorney. Many homeowners think that just like fixing a leaky faucet at home, they can easily defend themselves in a foreclosure proceeding and save their home. Here are several important reasons why you should not try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense. Florida’s new speedy foreclosure law (House Bill 87) makes it far easier for lenders to get families out of their homes. Under the new Florida law, the burden has now been placed on homeowners to prove that the bank does not have the right to foreclose, instead of the bank being required to prove that they are entitled to a foreclosure. Homeowners will have about 20 days to organize their evidence and present that proof to the court, whereas before they had months or years to develop their case against the lender. Some of the legal defenses to a foreclosure are highly technical, constantly changing, and require specialized knowledge. Homeowners are not equipped to tackle the challenges presented by Florida’s speedy foreclosure law without the guidance of an attorney. Florida leads the nation not only in completed foreclosures from April 2012 to March 2013 (according to CoreLogic), but also has the largest backlog of foreclosure cases. The district courts are doing everything in their power to “flush” foreclosure cases out of the court system as quickly as possible. The “rocket docket” system, implemented in many jurisdictions to dispose of hundreds of foreclosure cases daily, is just one means of accomplishing this goal. Courts are also randomly setting cases for trial that are simply not legally ready for trial, or not “at issue.” Unsuspecting homeowners that are unprepared to defend their case, or that fail to seek a timely continuance of trial, find themselves forced to accept a final judgment of foreclosure, with an auction sale date 30-60 days later. Preparation is the most important step you can take right now. Your timeframe to save your home has been SHORTENED by our legislature. Organize all your closing documents, every bank statement, every payment, every communication you’ve had with the bank, and contact experienced attorneys like those at The Arcia Law Firm. This way you will be able to know what lies ahead, so you can work with your attorney and ensure that you are defended quickly and properly. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent many homeowners in our community with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, don’t try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team. Contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.fight4yourhome.com to schedule your appointment online.

A Surprise Delivery
Miramar Police Officer Natasha Richardson and new mom Marie Lys Colin take a peek at newborn Maybelle Colin Sainvilus recently at Memorial Regional Hospital. While on duty as a school resource officer, Richardson helped deliver the baby girl at Fairway Elementary School in late August.
