T
he month of October often conjures up images of harvests, autumn and falling leaves. Watching leaves turn red and fall is less of a common occurrence here than for our friends up north. Agriculture is, however, still an important part of Broward County and South Florida. According to the USDA’s 2012 Census of Agriculture, there were almost 15 thousand acres of land being used for farming in Broward County. This farmland generates about $50 million a year in livestock and crop sales. These figures do not include the well-established horse economy in Plantation, Davie and Southwest Ranches. While most of Broward County is built out with neighborhoods, city parks and commercial developments, there are still over 600 farms producing everything from bell peppers to beef. These farms preserve a past where much of West Broward was composed of ranches and orange groves. There are a number of farms and nurseries where residents can buy locally grown produce. Check out our calendar section each month to find farmers markets in your area. Remember, October harvests happen in paradise too! Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

also a themed room for the youngest visitors. Trickor-Treaters can take a walk through the haunted rooms and will get their share of candy as they leave. Costumes are encouraged! Refreshments may also be purchased during the event. Since its inception 30 years ago, the Coral Springs Haunted House has been a fun event for the local community. The Coral Springs Haunted House started 30 years ago as an outdoor, fun family event in our City parks. As the event grew, so did the need for a venue that was weatherproof, so in 1990, the City moved the Haunted House to the Coral Springs Gym and expanded its hours,” said Lynne Martzall, Media Relations Coordinator for the City of Coral Springs. The event is great for children up to 10 years of age with fun activities, games and interaction with City staff. “The City enjoys pro-
viding a safe environment for children to celebrate Halloween,” said Martzall, adding, “The goal is to ensure that children who walk through our “non” scary Halloween Haunted House have a safe and enjoyable time.” They are in need of teen volunteers looking to earn service hours. Teens must pre-register by going to www.coralsprings.org/volunteer, complete the teen application and return to Volunteer Services located at 9500 West Sample Road. If you have questions about volunteering, contact Volunteer Service Coordinator Kim Sanecki at 954-346-4430. This event is age appropriate through the 5th grade. The cost is $5 per child and $2 per adult. For more information, call Parks and Recreation at 954-345-2200.

FALL FUN BY STACEY BOMSER
J
ust because the temperature really doesn’t dip, and the leaves don’t change color, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate the fall season in South Florida. From pumpkin patches to hayrides, there are endless opportunities to usher in autumn and create your own fall festival.
Pick a Pumpkin This time of year, pumpkin patches are popping up on practically every corner. While they’re great photo ops for taking adorable pictures of the kids, these pumpkin patches are also the perfect place to find your future jack-o’-lantern. You can roam the rows of these giant, bright orange squash, searching for that perfect specimen. So, how do you decide which of the literally thousands of pumpkins to pick? According to thekitchn.com, there are six simple steps to picking the perfect pumpkin. 1. Pick it up and tap it: It should feel sturdy. When you tap it, you should hear a hollow sound. 2. Check the coloring: Choose one that has consistent coloring throughout. 3. Look for bad spots: Try to choose a pumpkin without any scratches, bruises, or dark spots. 4. Apply pressure: Flip the pumpkin upside down and apply pressure with your thumbs. If it’s not completely sturdy, the pumpkin isn’t fresh and will rot quickly. 5. Set it down: Make sure it sits flat, unless you want your jack-o’lantern to sit a little crooked.
Harvestthe Family Fun this 6. Carry it from the bottom: Don’t carry it by the stem — instead, cradle it from the bottom or tote it home in a bag. It’s important to keep in mind that not all pumpkins are created equally. There is a difference between ‘pie pumpkins’ and ‘carving pumpkins.’ Carving pumpkins are typically thinner, making them easier to saw into. They also tend to have less ‘guts’, so they’re easier to clean. On the other

hand, pie pumpkins are usually smaller and rounder and more ‘meaty’ inside.

Seminole Gaming Becomes the Latest South Florida Business to Ban Plastic Straws BY JON DUKA
T
he Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Seminole Gaming and Hard Rock International entities announced the elimination of plastic straws at all six Florida casinos. The plastics will be replaced with durable, earth-friendly, drinking straws and will only be available to customers upon request. In addition, the gambling entity has eliminated plastic bags for “to-go” items. This marks the latest in an international trend of major businesses eliminating plastic straw use. The Casinos join a growing list of companies, including Starbucks, Royal Caribbean, Hyatt and American Airlines. The companies have been prompted to action by a number of environmental groups concerned about the impact that straws and other
single-use plastic items have on the environment. Many South Floridians share these concerns and applaud the changes. “Drinking a cocktail from a glass, or an iced latte without a straw really shouldn’t be a big deal,” commented Ann Marie Hussey, “I go to Starbucks a few times a week. I don’t want to be part of the problem.” Estimates of the number of plastic straws used by Americans, each day, range as high as 500 million. Unfortunately, many of these straws end up in the Ocean, causing unsightly pollution, disrupting ecosystems and eventually entering the food chain. Environmental groups including the Ocean Conservancy, The Plastic Pollution Coalition and thelastplasticstraw.org have advocated for reduced or eliminated plastic straw use for years. After years of virtual innaction, the recent announcements have made these groups feel things hare paying off. “Seminole Gaming has a long history of sustainability programs, and we are pleased to add more earth-friendly straws and to go bags to the list,” said Tracy Bradford, Senior Vice President of Purchasing. “Seminole Gaming restaurants already utilize reusable, recyclable or eco-friendly to go containers. As the gaming operation of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Seminole Gaming is proud to help make a difference in conscientious sustainability practices – it’s the right thing to do.”

Advances in Mammography: Fighting Cancer in 3D Regular screening mammograms, which create two-dimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates threedimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This 3D technology is available at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Breast Center at the Weston-main campus and at the new Coral Springs Family Health Center. The 3D mammogram is also called breast tomosynthesis. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” Maria Artze, MD says Maria Artze, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. “Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap, and so improves the radiologist’s ability to detect breast cancer.”
The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses Cassann Blake, MD and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.” For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy
(tissue sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you.” To schedule a consultation with Dr. Blake or Dr. Margaret Thompson in Weston or Coral Springs, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/BreastCancer.

Coral Springs Fire Department hosts Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner BY NICOL JENKINS
C
oral Springs firefighters will soon cook up some pasta and meatballs in support of cancer awareness. The community is invited to the Coral Springs Fire Department’s Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner on Saturday, October 28 from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Station 80, located at 2825 Coral Springs Drive, north of Royal Palm Blvd. Coral Springs, Florida 33065. This event is open to the public and for a $5 donation, residents will receive a plate of pasta prepared by Coral Springs Firefighters, along with homemade firehouse sauces, salad, meatballs, Italian sausage, bread, a beverage and even a dessert table. Dinner will be cooked and served by the firefighters and attendees will be able to get a tour of the firehouse, see their equipment, socialize with them and purchase t-shirts. They will have helmets for the kids as well. Donations and proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society along with Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund and the Coral Springs Professional Firefighters Benevolent Association. The American Cancer Society is a nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer. The mission of the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund is to provide funding for breast care to women in the local community who are financially unable to obtain screening mammograms
and advanced high quality breast imaging and biopsies. The Coral Springs Professional Firefighters Benevolent Association assists in raising funds and providing awareness for local charitable events that offer a direct benefit to the people, person or organization in need. “We want to bring awareness to the community, support all types of cancer and have a great event. The money raised goes to the local chapter, and helps raise funds for the Benevolent to do more charitable events throughout Coral Springs and Parkland,” said Robert McGilloway, Division Chief of Training for the Coral Springs Fire Department. “We started the event 8 years ago as a trial and everyone was so receptive to it that it became a staple event for the city and residents to look forward to every year. It has grown and improved each year and it’s a good time for the firefighters and for the city,” said Lieutenant Mike Farmer, President of the Coral Springs Professional Firefighters Benevolent Association. The local firefighters are in support of bringing awareness to cancer and those affected. The local Department has been personally impacted by cancer since losing a close friend and fellow firefighter Paul Pietrafesa, a former driver, engineer for the Coral Springs Fire Department, who passed away from pancreatic cancer.
“The International Association of Firefighters has adopted wearing pink for October for Breast Cancer Awareness for many years. It has grown into not just focusing on breast cancer but all forms of cancer. We have the lavender ribbon with our logo on it supporting the fight against cancer. We have had people in our Department and their families suffer from cancer. Our firefighter Paul Pietrafesa suffered from cancer and we want to honor them,” said Farmer. The Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner continues to be a successful event each year. “Last year we topped the 1,000 served mark and this year we hope to top the 1,500 people served,” said Farmer. Come out and support your local firefighters and community in a quest to fight cancer! For more information, to buy tickets to the event, or to make a donation, visit CoralSpringsFireFighters.org.

Golfing for the King Tournament Benefits Local Students BY NICOL JENKINS
L
ocal golfers will soon help provide scholarships for Coral Springs high school students. The 13th Annual Golfing for the King tournament will take place on October 25th from 7 am to Noon at Deer Creek Country Club, 2801 Deer Creek Country Club Boulevard Deerfield Beach. Event will benefit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship. Registration is at 7 am, and Shotgun starts at 8 am. There will be a continental breakfast, four person scramble, buffet awards luncheon, raffle tickets, beverages on the course, on course challenges and contests, driving range, tournament awards, and signature gift pack.
In addition to offering an 18-hole tournament, the event will offer breakfast and lunch, along with trophies to the winners, silent auctions, exciting contests on the course and free stretching exercises and massages to all players. Other attractions include: Brown Forman Liquor, Stretch Zone and much more. “Our goal is to raise money for the MLK Scholarship Fund. All proceeds from the golf tournament go directly into scholarships offered to financially needy, high school seniors wishing to attend college or other institution of higher learning,” said Joyce Campos, Community Relations Manager for the City of Coral Springs. This is the 13th year of the tournament. To date, the Martin Luther King, Jr. scholarship has helped more than 300 students attend college and achieve dreams that they did not think possible. The scholarship goes one step further by providing mentoring long after. “More than just the financial aspect, the mentoring, coaching and support these students have received from the MLK Committee members have been invaluable. The scholarship recipients are asked to keep in touch with the Committee as we like to track their progress, encourage them if needed and celebrate their achievements,” said Campos, add-
ing, “Nothing is more rewarding than to see our former scholarship recipients evolve into professions like medicine, education, pharmacy, social services, and more.” The local community who supports the golf tournament also benefits from helping high school students. “The best compliment is to have our golfers return year after year to play in our tournament and support our cause,” said Campos. For player information and sponsorship opportunities, contact Joyce Campos at 954-344-1005 or jcampos@coralsprings.org.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF: CORAL SPRINGS
Safety First in Coral Springs
2018
CHIEF CLYDE PARRY s summer ends and the students are back in school, the safety of our children is first and foremost on all of our minds. The horrific event that occurred in Parkland has brought about changes to security at our schools throughout the nation. Broward County Schools will now have a SRO or Guardian at every public school in the county. I am pleased to say that Coral Springs had at least one officer in all of our public schools for years, however, with the support of our City Commission and City Manager, we added additional SROs to our high schools. We take the safety of our children on campus very seriously. You may see additional changes in traffic patterns, or other security measures, so we ask that you help us by complying with any and all of these changes. We all need to work together to provide the safest environment for our children. In addition to security concerns, you can also help us keep our children safe by obeying all traffic laws, especially the ones in and around our schools. Please obey school zone speed limits and be alert of kids who are walking to school. Leave early enough to give yourself plenty of time to get through the traffic circles at the schools and avoid the stress of rushing to work. Please don’t text while driving. Even a split-second distraction can have deadly consequences. We all need to work together to make this school year a safe one. With the start of the school year, we all get a little busier in our lives. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the little things, like checking to make sure you removed valuables from your car and locked the doors. We are still experiencing vehicle break-ins overnight. You can help reduce the risk by hiding or removing valuables from the car and locking the doors. Never leave the key fob in your car. Doing so can turn a theft from a vehicle into a stolen vehicle. Vehicle burglars now check to see if the car will start when they are stealing other items. Please, never leave the key fob in the vehicle! Thieves are more likely to steal the car if they don’t have to work hard to take it. Residents should also be aware of skimmers when fueling up at the gas stations. Skimmers are devices used by scammers to copy credit or debit card information that criminals use to duplicate cards and steal your identity. The best way to protect yourself is to pay inside the store. When paying inside isn’t an option, use pumps that are closest to the store where the pumps are visible to the attendants, and never use a pump where the stickers are damaged. In addition to staying safe, we want our residents to get out and have some fun at all the community events that are coming up. Please look for these events on our webpage, Facebook pages and Twitter. Among the upcoming events that are planned is the Shredathon on October 13th, so gather all those unwanted documents, and bring them to 2575 Sportsplex Drive where they will be properly destroyed. You can also come out and see us at the Senior Health Fair taking place on October 17th. Seniors and family members who are interested in learning about local resources for seniors are encouraged to attend. Keep your eyes open for announcements about the City’s virtual Slice of Springs in October as well. This is a great opportunity for residents to ask questions and find out about new initiatives from the comfort of your home.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: CORAL SPRINGS
Coral Springs Update MAYOR SKIP CAMPBELL he City of Coral Springs was notified by Fitch Ratings that we once again received AAA credit rating. The AAA rating is the highest bond rating an organization can earn. Much like an individual’s credit rating, a bond rating is a measure of an organization’s credit worthiness. With Fitch’s AAA rating, the City of Coral Springs has saved, and will continue to save, millions of dollars in interest and credit enhancements, such as bond insurance. I am proud to have Fitch Ratings once again offer their research, rating and commentary on the City’s commitment to long-range financial planning. This AAA credit rating confirms our stable financial position, and that has a tremendous fiscal impact for our residents. I am proud to announce that the City earned gold-level certification under the Florida Green Building Coalition’s Florida Green Local Government (FGBC) designation program. The City of Coral Springs is one of only three cities in Broward County to earn gold-level certification – along with Coconut Creek and Fort Lauderdale. This achievement demonstrates our commitment to protect and conserve the community’s natural resources and enhance the efficiency of government, which also reduces the burden on taxpayers. More importantly, being a green City raises public awareness about the benefits environmental stewardship. On September 20, 2018, I was honored to join my fellow City Commissioners in formally recognizing Fire Chief Frank Babinec on his selection as Fire Chief of the Year for 2018 by the Southeast Association of Fire Chiefs. There were numerous reasons Chief Babinec, who also serves as Fire Chief for the City of Parkland and the Assistant City Manager for Coral Springs, was selected for such a prestigious recognition. Those include health and wellness initiatives related to cancer prevention protocols, policy development, strategic planning and training procedures. Chief Babinec serves as the President of the Fire Chief’s Association of Broward County, as well as the Safety & Health Committee Chairman for the Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association. Be sure to take advantage of our fun, family-friendly events this fall in Downtown Coral Springs. Artoberfest will celebrate German culture, entertainment, food and beverages on October 6 from 4-10 p.m. Savor the Notes on October 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., sponsored by Broward Health Coral Springs, will feature jazz music, food from local restaurants, as well as health and wellness cooking demos. Both events offer free parking, remember to bring a lawn chair or a blanket! We commonly remind residents to properly dispose of their information-sensitive documents. These include tax paperwork, credit card and bank statements. In an effort to assist residents in preventing identity theft, the Coral Springs Police will host a Shredathon on October 13 from 9-11 a.m. at Sportsplex (directly across from the Aquatic Complex). On Wednesday, October 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the City will host the Senior Health Fair at the Coral Springs Gym. Seniors will receive free health screenings and information on social and City services.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF
Safety Mindset Isn’t Just for Cops! ACTING CHIEF OF POLICE JON SHAW ishing everyone a happy start to the Fall season and I hope that you all have made a smooth transition back to school! As we embark on the busy holiday season, I would like to share some important safety tips with you. Although we all have diverse mindsets, we all value one very important thing, personal safety. Regardless of our age, where we live, or what career path we have taken, the one thing that everyone always wants to know is how can I protect myself and my family? Today, I want to teach you that a “Safety Mindset” is most definitely not just for cops! As a police officer, we are trained to be aware of our surroundings and always try to prepare for what “could” happen, and not just for what is currently happening. We prepare for the unknown and always have our head on a swivel. Ever since I graduated the police academy (yes…long ago in 1997) my safety mindset is something that has never wavered. I have two sons, who I greatly cherish and throughout their lives from the moment they were born, my mindset is “How can I keep my sons safe?” Below are just a few things that I would like to share with you, that would be good tools to keep on your tool belt. Safety Tips from Chief Shaw: We all enjoy a meal out at a restaurant with our friends and family! Usually your first thought is, “lets order an appetizer” and we start great conversations! As police officers, the moment we enter the restaurant, our first thought is, “Where is the safest spot for me to sit at this table?” Regardless of where we are seated, our top priority is the safety and well-being of our loved ones. Try to choose a seat where you will be able to have a visual of what’s going on around you and try to be able to see the door. Think about a small coffee shop, you can see almost the entire shop, as long as your back is not facing the front entrance. The more you practice this, the more it will become first nature. Everyone goes grocery shopping…whether we enjoy it or not! Some people like to walk around the mall, or even take a stroll in the park. Countless times, crimes happen when we aren’t even paying attention. Keep your purse, wallet, cell phone, and anything that you are carrying with you, within your sight and always stay vigilant about not putting things (such as a purse) into your shopping cart. If you do put your purse in the cart, be sure that you have a grasp on it, at all times. We sometimes become complacent, but within seconds as you turn away to grab a box of cereal off the shelf or try on a pair of sunglasses, your belongings, such as your wallet containing your credit cards, have now disappeared. Another important piece of advice I can provide you is to only keep your necessities as you shop. Never carry your social security card in your wallet. But most importantly, be aware of your surroundings and who is in close proximity to you. If something feels fishy, it probably is. Lastly, safety at the gas pumps is something that I want to discuss with everyone. Don’t leave any items that are valuable to you in plain sight inside of your vehicle, while you are pumping gas. It takes a criminal less than 30 seconds to identify you, see that you have nothing in your hands, check your vehicle for a purse or other item of value, open your door and as quick as you see them take your item (or maybe not even see), they are already gone! If you are planning on going to fill your vehicle with gas, place your belongings in a safe spot prior to arriving. I recommend using your trunk, and most importantly, lock all of your vehicle’s doors. Don’t allow yourself to become a victim. Keep your safety mindset in all aspects of your daily life, and it will become natural. Should you ever have any questions or would like to speak with a police officer, we are always ready and willing to provide extra safety tips! Check us out on Facebook at facebook.com/MargateFlPolice or simply call the Margate Police Department at (954)972-7111 to speak with an officer. Margate PD takes great pride in educating the public and keeping our citizens safe.
