n the span of just six days, eleven people were murdered at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a man murdered two black shoppers at a grocery store outside of Louisville, Kentucky, and a local man mailed more than a dozen pipe bombs to prominent critics of the President. In summary, it was a horrible week for our country that was driven, in part, by division and hatred. Shortly after the horrible events in Pittsburgh however, Tarek El-Messidi, a founder of the Muslim group Celebrate Mercy, set up a fundraising initiative in partnership with another Muslim group called MPower Change on behalf of the Tree of Life victims. Their goal was to raise $25,000 to help the Jewish families impacted by the assault. In a matter of days, they had raised more than $250,000, mostly from Muslim donors. Perhaps as important as the financial aid is the message they sent: we are all in this together. El-Messidi emphasized his motivation to help was driven by a sense of shared humanity, “We are here for you, if you need anything at all. If you need food for the families, if you just need someone to come to the grocery store because you don’t feel safe, we will be there for you.” In this time of extreme division, we can all learn from the example of the actions of these thoughtful, generous people. When we sit down with our families this holiday season, regardless of whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas or nothing at all, we must all remember that we are in this together, not against each other. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

He was elected to the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar from 1988 through 1996 and was the recipient of The Florida Bar Meritorious Service Award.

In the aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on February 14, 2018, Skip supported and mourned alongside grieving families. He also demanded action from his former colleagues in the Florida Senate to prevent such tragedy in the future, saying, “The safety of our children is my greatest priority.” In honor of Skip’s service to the State of Florida, Governor Rick Scott directed the United States and State Flags be flown at half-staff at Coral Springs City Hall, the State Capitol and the Broward County Courthouse on October 27, 2018 – the day of his funeral. Skip’s viewing was held at Coral Springs City Hall and attended by hundreds of mourners. His Funeral Mass was held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, where he was eulogized by those who knew and loved him profoundly. Kelly Hancock, a partner at the law firm Skip and Jon Krupnick founded, believes his friend would have said to mourners, “If when you think of me and it’s with a tear, don’t think of me; but if you think of me and it’s with a smile, think of me often.” While Krupnick praised Skip’s wife, Lynn, for giving her husband the support and freedom to give his love to everyone else – clients, constituents and friends. Rabbi Kurt Stone, friend and confidant, referred to Skip as a ‘Mench.’ A term of endearment, he explained, “Skip was a person

who grew up better than their mother thought they would ever be. Skip was a person who simply was just as good as you presumed them to be.” Proud of his Irish heritage, a single bagpiper, which is a Celtic tradition, played at the start and conclusion of the service. Longtime friend, fellow Irishman and Coral Springs Attorney, John Hearn reflected on Skip’s great integrity, faith and love of family. He also reminded mourners there was no one better than Skip when it came to the use of ‘Irish Diplomacy.’ Walter “Skip” Campbell will forever be remembered as a dedicated public servant and a man of the people. His service to the public, especially to the Coral Springs community, will have a lasting impact on the community for generations to come.

FLORIDA PANTHERS

Chill Out South Florida – Florida Panthers Celebrate 25 Years! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

26 DECEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

Photos: Eliot J Schechter

I

t’s that time of year for a bit cooler temperature in South Florida, but nothing is cooler than hitting the ice at the BB&T Center where the Florida Panthers have started their 25th season. The significant milestone promises to bring more excitement and more charitable effort as the Florida Panthers continue to score goals on and off the ice. To celebrate the anniversary season, the Florida Panthers will honor past and present individuals who have shaped the franchise over the first 25 years and made Florida their home. These individuals will be a part of the growing and engaged Panthers alumni who will serve the organization for the future. A little over two decades ago, the Florida Panthers Foundation was established to make a positive philanthropic impact on the local community and beyond. Through various partnerships, grants, and community programs, the Foundation focuses on four priorities, including building the game of youth hockey, supporting health and education initiatives for children, advocating for and supporting veterans’ issues, and raising awareness for the endangered Florida Panther. Besides raising money through various fundraisers and in-game initiatives such as the 50/50 Raffle, jersey and memorabilia auctions, and “Players Favorite Things Baskets”, outside events and other opportunities also engage fans to support the Foundation.

The relaunch of the Community Champions Grant Program for the 2018-2019 season will allow South Florida charitable organizations to request financial support for programs and initiatives that benefit the community. During each home game throughout the season, the Foundation will award one grant for up to $25,000 to a local organization. The Florida Panthers will also be hosting eight community drives, presented by JetBlue, the Official Airline of the Florida Panthers. Fans can participate in the five remaining drives throughout the rest of the season to benefit the South Florida Community. Collections for each drive will begin two hours prior to puck drop on the JetBlue Tarmac.

Once again, the Panthers will be bringing outdoor ice rinks to South Florida for the holiday season. “The Hockey Holidays Ice Rink” at Bubier Park located near Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk will run through January 7th. “We hope these outdoor rinks bring the holiday spirit to our community as we continue to grow the game of hockey in South Florida,” said Panthers Chief Operating Officer Sean McCaffrey. n The Florida Panthers play their home games at BB&T Center in Sunrise, which is conveniently located at the center of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties and easily accessible via 595, 75, 95 and the Sawgrass Expressway. For more information, tickets, and the game schedule, please visit www.NHL.com/Panthers.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS BY DEBBY TEICH

T

his month, families will celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. They will decorate trees; sing carols; and anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus. They will light Menorahs; play with dreidels; and indulge in festive foods like latkes. They will focus on the seven core values of Kwanzaa; light the Kinara and place a Mkeka on the table. For many, it is a time for gift giving. The holidays can also be a wonderful time for families and friends to put down their electronics to reconnect and spend quality time together, as they celebrate old traditions and create new ones. It is an opportunity to teach children about their heritage and the true meaning of the holidays. Every family’s style of celebration is different, and it is those differences that make the holidays so magical. And remember, traditions don’t always have to be traditional; they come in all shapes, sizes and varieties. Below are some simple ways to celebrate both the traditions and spirit of the holidays. ▸ Make holiday foods together. So much of the holidays revolves around cooking and eating traditional foods. It is a great time to pass down a family recipe. Whether it is baking cookies and pies, frying latkes, or cooking brisket and turkey, get as many family members to help in the kitchen. Assign each one a task. Play some fun holiday music to make it even more festive. ▸ Limit your gift giving. Many families save all year to be able to afford a wide range of gifts for every family member. Decide on a designated amount, so everyone gets the same number. One might even be a trip or event that the whole family can do together. Or, skip the gifts and focus on being together and family traditions, instead of unwrapping gifts. ▸ Read a holiday book together. Pull out a copy of one your favorite holiday books from your childhood and read it with your kids. Or, read a new story together. ▸ Be kind to others. Volunteer as a family and do something special for someone else. Visit

a nursing home; collect food items for a local shelter; work in a soup kitchen or food bank; bring blankets to the homeless; or contact a nonprofit that needs a helping hand. Recount your childhood traditions. Children love to hear about how their parents celebrated when they were young. Talk about your own family traditions and ask the children to suggest new ones. Celebrate the holidays with your family long distance. Today’s technology makes it easy to connect with family that live in other places, so you can celebrate the holidays together and continue to make new memories. Wear the same pajamas. Watch the same movie at the same time. Place a group video call for some virtual caroling or a virtual dreidel game. Make a family recipe together, even if you are not in the same kitchen. Keep a smile on your face. A smile is often contagious. Try to smile as you go about your errands. Treat each sales clerk and cashier with kindness. Set the table with festive decorations. Get the kids involved in setting the table with crafts they made and other holiday decorations.

▸ Give a handmade gift. Instead of shopping in the traditional places, come up with something creative and make your own homemade gift. These are often the most meaningful gifts you can give. ▸ Adopt a needy family. There are so many children that long for gifts on the holidays. Adopt a family and find out what they want. You can even deliver the gifts as a family. ▸ Count down to the holidays. Extend the excitement of the holidays and start celebrating before they begin. Create a list of fun activities

that families can do together in the days prior. ▸ Create family rituals. Create a few rituals to observe each year that family and friends will look forward to as the season approaches. ▸ Watch television together. Gather the family together in one room to enjoy a holiday snack and watch a holiday classic. ▸ Make a Giving Tree. Buy a small artificial tree and hang paper ornaments with the names of charities and gifts the needy might want. Ask each child to select a charity and purchase the gifts. You can even deliver the gifts with the kids. ▸ Create a holiday craft together. Whether it is a Christmas tree ornament, Menorah or Kinara, spend quality time with the kids making simple crafts they can display. ▸ Make a gingerbread house. Explore your creativity (and sweet tooth) by decorating a gingerbread house together. Then display their masterpiece on your holiday table. If that is too difficult or time consuming, decorate gingerbread cookies instead. ▸ Plan a special day together. Plan to spend a YOU NAME IT, day with your family and leave the electronics WE FRAME IT behind. Go to the beach, zoo, movies or plan a picnic in a park. FRAMING WHILE ▸ Spread holiday cheer with baked goods. Deliver YOU WAIT! some of your baked goods to friends, family

and neighbors. Wrap them in holiday colors and include a special hand-printed message from the kids. ▸ Deck the halls. The most decorated area of the house is typically the living room. Spread holiday cheer to the bedrooms, hallways and other areas of the house. ▸ Call friends and relatives. Make a surprise call to someone who was not expecting it. They will be happy to hear from you.

Incognito Salon The Landmark BY JOHN BRODIE

I

ncognito Salon is a true landmark in Coral Springs. The Salon has been in its original location for 28 years. Located at 1750 University Drive, next to Big Bear Brewery. Incognito Salon has had the same owners, Mario and Lou, since the doors of this boutique salon opened. It is one ofthe only salons left with the original owners.Incognito Salon has been a head of its time since the beginning. The space was chosen because of its three walls of glass and its New York loft appearance. The naturallight that flows through out, is an important element when doing color. Many salons aredesigned with only windows in the front, creating shadows that make it difficult to get the perfectend result. Since Incognito is know as a hair color salon. This became one of the most important elements. In addition to the space, Incognito has given much of its attention to advanced education. The Staff continually expands their education by in house classes as well as attending the L’Orealinstitute in New York. The classes consist of product knowledge and updated trends andtechniques. Incognito’s newest trends of 2018-2019 consist of: ▸▸ Red Velvet Adding red on blonde or dark brunette hair ▸▸ Dusty Blonde Making Blonde a little more cooler or Icy gray hilites on dark bases ▸▸ Cold Brew Balayage Swirling of neutral and gold

tones down the hair shaft. Like pouring cream in your coffee. If these do not sound appealing. Let the color experts at Incognito help pick out a hue that is a perfect reflection of you! The artists will give you an in depth consultation, learn about your likesand dislikes and also your hair goals. They will also take into consideration your lifestyle, skin complexion, hair condition and other components to come up with a bespoke hair color. ( A hair color that is tailored just for you!). The Staff at Incognito is unique. Most have been with the salon since the beginning. Although inthe many years some have moved away, they still travel to work every other week to tend totheir loyal clientele. In Addition to the staff traveling from as far as Orlando, Incognito has clients that travel to get their hair colored as well. Many come from as far away as; Arizona, Texas andNew York. It is a true testament of their talent. Incognito gives each client 3 commitments: 1.Tend to the Client’s needs. 2.Treat each Client as if they are the only one. 3. Give them the best hair color of their life. It seems with these ideas at hand, it is no wonder why Incognito Salon as survived all theseyears and has remained on top. Incognito’s awards range from being named Local 10 News’ “Best Salon” for 3 years in a row and New Times “#1 Readers Choice” for several years. In addition they have been Coral Springs City News “Best Color Salon”

and “Hair Salon” 6 years in a row. L’Oreal Professional has made Incognito one of the only Platinum Elite salons in Florida. With this position, Incognito gets to preview all of thenewest products, techniques and trends from Paris before anyone else. None of this has slowed them down. They continue to excel in every way to make your visit the best it can be. Visit Incognito at their boutique salon and experience it for your self. Wishes Do Come True – American Heritage Club Wins Philanthropy Award BY BEVERLY PERKINS

B

etween athletics, music, drama, the arts, and so many others there is no shortage of clubs to participate in at American Heritage School. However, one club not only is great to be a part of but makes a difference in others’ lives as well. “I have been a part of Make-A-Wish since 9th Grade and, throughout my four years, I have learned that no matter our age, we have the potential to positively influence the lives of children across the United States,” exclaimed American Heritage Senior Jared Cohen. “Through Make-A-Wish, I have seen first-hand how the money we raise changes the lives of families. I enjoy being able to help those in need in our community while having a fun time with my friends.” Recently, the Make-A-Wish Club at American Heritage School won the “Young Philanthropist Innovation Award”. The honor was presented by Make-AWish ® Southern Florida at its donor celebration event at the Miami Tower

Sky Lounge. The prestigious award recognizes young people that possess the dedication, drive, and passion for philanthropy. For the past decade, the school’s Make-A-Wish Club has been under the helm of advisor Sherrie Roisman. She has guided and overseen fundraising activities all in the effort to help underwrite life-changing wishes for criticallyill children. In just the past five years, her students have raised more than $35,000. These much-needed funds have granted seven wishes for Make-A-Wish ® Southern Florida’s families. The club’s goal is to always grant two wishes per year, which equates to $10,000. During the 2017-2018 school year, the school’s fundraising efforts will grant the wish of four-year-old Sebastian Estevez who is the son of a faculty member at Plantation’s premier private school. Sebastian’s wish is to go to Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii which will be underwritten by the school’s club.

BEING FAT & JOLLY IS HIGHLY OVERRATED!

“We’re extremely grateful for what Ms. Roisman and her students have done on our behalf,” said Norman Wedderburn, president/CEO of Make-AWish Southern Florida. “Their connection to Sebastian’s wish and witnessing its impact for one of their own will be a special experience for everyone.” “My nephew, Jacob, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma when he was three years old and went through a year of chemotherapy, which basically meant a year in the hospital. Obviously,

these were very stressful times for our family. Make-A-Wish came to the cancer floor at least once a month to organize games with the children and generally cheer up everyone (including parents). It made such a huge difference in the children’s lives. Through this experience I developed a deep respect for the organization. With the chance to sponsor a Make-A-Wish club at American Heritage, I jumped at the chance to do for other children what Make-A-Wish had done for us,” stated Sherrie Roisman, Social Studies Department Co-Chair, Make-A-Wish Club Sponsor, American Heritage School.

Watch the Decorated Floats Go By And Get in the Holiday Spirit at The Coral Springs Holiday Parade.

T

he City of Coral Springs annual Holiday Parade will be held on Wednesday, December 12th at 7 pm. The 2018 parade theme is Holiday Express, which is keeping with the theme of Polar Express. Prior to the parade, there will be the Coral Springs Holiday Mile. The parade will feature over 60 decorated floats, marching bands, and other entries along Sample Road from Coral Springs Drive to City Hall. The City has hosted the Annual Holiday parade for the last two decades. Residents enjoy watching the festive floats, listening to the local school bands, dressing up for the holidays, and seeing Santa. “The Coral Springs Holiday Parade is a residential favorite, bringing families together to celebrate the holiday season with local school bands, dance troupes and businesses,” said Lynne Martzall, Media Relations Coordinator for the City of Coral Springs. The holiday parade is also beneficial for local businesses. “It is great for business too. The restaurants along the parade route enjoy one of the busiest nights of the year. And businesses that sponsor floats are provided an opportunity to promote their business to thousands of consumers,” added Martzall. The holiday parade truly brings the

entire community together. “Anytime we bring families together it is beneficial to the community. The holidays are a busy time for most residents, but the parade allows residents to pause for a moment and enjoy a fun, familyfriendly event– oftentimes seeing their neighbors and friends who participate in the parade. It also allows the City to showcase its police and fire apparatus,” said Martzall. Keeping with tradition, Santa Claus will serve as the final float in the parade, ending his one-mile trek at the iconic “Everything Under the Sun”. Businesses interested in sponsorship or participation can call (954) 3452112. We are looking for adult Parade Marshal volunteers. To volunteer, call (954) 346-4430. The Coral Springs Holiday Mile run, which is open to runners of all ages and abilities, is $15 and requires participants to register online. Race day registration is $20. To register or for additional information (parking, awards, rules and regulations), visit www.itzevents.com. In case of inclement weather, the parade will be held on Thursday, December 13th. For more information on participating in the Holiday Parade, call 954-345-2112.

School Choice Application Window Opens for Broward County Schools BY JON DUKA

B

roward County Public Schools’ (BCPS) School Choice application window for the 2019/20 school year will be open from December 1st through February 6, 2019. The School Choice application window provides an opportunity to apply for magnet programs, Nova schools or school reassignments, which allow students to attend schools other than their assigned schools. Parents and guardians of school aged children are encouraged to explore all of the District’s School Choice options available for their families.

In accordance with state law, BCPS offers students the ability to select schools outside of their assigned school. Placement at schools outside of a child’s assigned school are done using a lottery system and are subject to seats at desired schools availability. Families must apply no later than February 6th to be considered. BCPS offers a number of School Choice Programs including:

Magnet Programs

Magnet programs offer in-depth experiences in specific areas of interest. They also typically have minimum acedemic requirements for students to be eligible. Many of the top magnet schools are oversubscribed each year.

La Bamba Mexican & Spanish Restaurants tell the story of the American Dream. In the early 1980s, the Molina Family humbly came from El Salvador to the United States with the dream of making a future for the family. In 1988 the hard work, diligence and dedication paid off as the first restaurant opened in Inverrary, Lauderhill, employing most of the 12 brothers and sisters of the Molina Family. The family grew even stronger as the siblings began to work together at this first location.

we grew up with, that our parents and grandparents brought from Cuba. However, we’ve found that most of our business is from other cultural groups. Once they try our cuisine, they’re hooked.” The prices are just as good as the meals. For lunch, you can choose from nine offerings, including shredded beef, roast pork, ground beef and their famous lamb shank. Little Havana has a full bar and a great Spanish sangria. Their wines come from Spain, Argentina and Chile, as well as the United States.

She has guided and overseen fundraising activities all in the effort to help underwrite life-changing wishes for critically-ill children. In just the past five years, her students have raised more than $35,000. These much-needed funds have granted seven wishes for Make-AWish ® Southern Florida’s families.

“We’re extremely grateful for what Ms. Roisman and her students have done on our behalf,” said Norman Wedderburn, president/CEO of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. “Their connection to Sebastian’s wish and witnessing its impact for one of their own will be a special experience for everyone.” “My nephew, Jacob, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma when he was three years old and went through a year of chemotherapy, which basically

meant a year in the hospital. Obviously, these were very stressful times for our family.

Sovereign Real Estate Group Offers Final Available Luxury Home Sites in Weston’s Windmill Reserve BY STACEY BOMSER

W

indmill Reserve is one of the most exclusive enclaves of luxury homes in Broward County. The estate residences in this private gated community in Weston are nestled among 139 acres of lakes and accented by pristine preserve views. Sovereign Real Estate Group is pleased to represent 13th Floor Investments in offering the final eight home sites for sale. Licensed Real Estate Broker Robert Coalla explains why this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for prospective home buyers. What is the connection between Sovereign Real Estate Group and 13th Floor Robert Coalla Investments? Broker-Sales Associate 13th Floor Investments is an investment and development firm. It purchased in bulk the 22 remaining lots in the exclusive, gated, 94-home community of Windmill Reserve in April 2017. 13th Floor realized that once these lots were sold, there would be no way to recreate such a development as there simply is no more land available in such a desirable community. Sovereign Real Estate Group is a full-service real estate firm and is proudly the exclusive sales representatives for these remaining lots in Windmill Reserve. These are the final lots of this kind available for sale anywhere in Broward County. Has Sovereign Real Estate Group been able to generate new interest in Windmill Reserve? Absolutely! With just one year of sales, we have successfully sold 14 of the luxury home site lots, with ten homes currently under construction or about to start. There are only eight remaining lots. We are confident the Sovereign Real Estate team of professionals will quickly close-out this community. Beyond sale of the home site, what services can you offer to prospective luxury home buyers? Although we are only offering the sale of the lots themselves, we do have financing available through a local community bank to help the buyer purchase the lot, provide the financing for construction of the home, and then have the loan converted into a permanent home mortgage with excellent rates and terms. In addition, we have been referring buyers to three local, reputable luxury home builders that are all currently active in the construction of several homes within the community today. Buyers can meet with these experienced home builders and their architects to explore the many options for designing their new luxury home. Why do you think there has been a resurgence of buyers in this development? Buyers who visit Windmill Reserve are impressed with how magnificent the community looks. It is truly remarkable to see how well the different architectural styles have blended together. This is not your cookie-cutter community. We have homes that are inspired in the style of a French chateau next to

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: PARKLAND

Parkland Update

MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY

A

fter a long and challenging year, the month of December is upon us. I hope everyone had a very Happy Thanksgiving and was able to spend some quality time with family and friends. So often it is easy to get caught up preparing for the holidays that we may forget to slow down, enjoy the special moments and remember what the holidays are really all about. Personally, this is my favorite time of the year. The weather is (slightly) cooler, there are several holiday events throughout the community where we can catch up with friends, and my family’s schedule lightens up so that we can spend more time together. For those who are missing loved ones, the holidays are an especially difficult time of year. Please reach out to your friends and family members who are missing loved ones. Let them know you are thinking about them and you are there for them if they need you. No one should feel alone during the holidays. As a community we are saddened by the loss of a great friend and public servant, Coral Springs Mayor Walter “Skip” Campbell. Skip was a giant in the legal field, a longtime public servant and a caring family man. Whether serving in Tallahassee as a State Senator, running for Florida Attorney General or serving as Mayor of Coral Springs, Skip always served with passion, ethics, care and a will to make a difference in the lives of others. His intelligence, sense of humor, compassion and faith made him one of the most beloved and respected elected officials in Broward County. He is sorely missed. We have several events and activities happening in December in Parkland. The Farmer’s Market continues with an additional craft fair on December 2 and 16 from 9am-1pm at the Equestrian Center. This is a great opportunity to get some last minute holiday gifts and enjoy our wonderful outdoor market. We also have a “Light Up The Park” event on December 8 from 5pm to 8pm at the Parkland Amphitheater in Pine Trails Park. There will be a holiday show, food trucks and stage performances. December 20 is the annual Parkland Snowfest for our residents. Kids and parents love this event complete with snow—including dual snow slides so kids can race their friends. There is a special area for toddlers and everyone can enjoy crafts, music and more. This year the event will be held at Pine Trails Park to accommodate more people. Registration for this event opens to Parkland residents on December 3 at 9am at the P-REC. This is one of the most popular events of the year and it fills up quickly so register early. Our next city commission meeting is on Wednesday, December 5, at 7pm. We will have a special presentation from New Zealand youth leaders who hosted and worked with several MSD students during a leadership summit this past summer. Additionally, we will have a workshop at 6pm to discuss recycling. You can view all commission and advisory board meeting agendas at www.cityofparkland.org/cc. Also, I will be holding office hours on Tuesday, December 4, from 7:30am-9am at Parkland City Hall. There is no appointment necessary. If you are unable to make it to my office hours, please feel free to contact me via email at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org with any questions or concerns you may have. As 2018 comes to a close, we have much to reflect upon. It has been a very difficult year for so many and yet so many more in our community came together to support and help one another. May we continue to focus on shared goals and working together toward common solutions. I would like to extend my best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful holiday season and great start to 2019. Thank you for being part of our community, thank you for all you do and thank you for continuously paying it forward and giving back. I always love hearing from members of the community, so please feel free to reach out to me via email, telephone at City Hall, or any time you see me out and about at community events in Parkland. 48 DECEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

52 DECEMBER 2018 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

A

s the holiday season approaches, we, at the Margate Police Department would like to take this time to reflect and think of different ways we can bring a positive change to our community. Last month, the men and women of our Margate Police Department, City of Margate employees, as well as several businesses within our community teamed up with one goal in mind, to provide much needed toiletry items for the women that reside at Broward Partnership. The Broward Partnership’s mission is to reduce homelessness by promoting independence and self-worth through advocacy, housing, and comprehensive services. While I and other Margate Police Department employees visited this location to drop off the donated items, we were taken on a tour of the facility. Broward Partnership’s facility is 57,000 square feet and holds 230-beds for short-term residence at the shelter for men, women, and families. At the time of our visit we learned that there are currently 41 children that call the Broward Partnership, home. As we toured the facility we were shown a beautiful art mural that was created by different individuals that have once resided at the Broward Partnership’s facility. The mural was comprised of different art pieces that were enlarged versions of the actual drawings. One of these drawings had a unique and inspiring story that truly touched my heart. The story that I would like to share with you is titled “The Six Hanger Houses”. A young, 7-year old boy named Corey, was experiencing homelessness with his family. While at Broward Partnership, Corey was known for his unique drawings of a house that was attached to a hanger. During a session with a Broward Partnership employee, Corey was asked why he drew houses with hangers on the roof. Corey simply replied to the employee by saying, “if my house was on a hanger, I could take my home everywhere my family went so we would never be homeless again.” This was such a powerful statement made by such a young child. From this experience alone I truly began to understand the mission of the Broward Partnership. So friends, as we approach the holiday season, if you find the time to get out there and donate your old clothing (specifically men’s shoes and jeans this holiday season) or volunteer your time to those who may not have, or are in need, do it, do whatever you can to make a positive impact in our community. Serving our community is something that we hold close to our heart, specifically during the holiday season! Have a happy and safe holiday season with your loved ones and a Happy New Year! See you in 2019!

Join Us for Movies in the Park The City of Margate Parks and Recreation Department’s 2018-2019 Movies in the Parks series continues on Saturday, December 1st with Paddington 2. The movie will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Margate Sports Complex, 1695 Banks Road. “Paddington 2” continues the story of the enduringly popular little bear in the trademark blue coat and red hat that touched audiences worldwide. The new story finds Paddington (Ben Whishaw) Crossword happily settled with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens, where he has become a popular member of the community, spreading joy and marmalade wherever he goes. While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday, Paddington spots a unique pop-up book in Mr. Gruber’s antique shop, and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it. But when the book is stolen, it’s up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief. Upcoming Movies in the Park are as follows: ▸▸ January 26th: Incredibles 2 ▸▸ February 23rd: Hotel Transylvania 3 Summer Vacation Movies in the Park features free outdoor movie screenings for the entire family. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and blankets. Food and beverage will be available for purchase. For more information, please call the Parks and Recreation Department at (954) 972-6458 or visit margatefl.com.

Finally, it is with deep sympathy that the City of Margate joins with Coral Springs, Broward County and the State of Florida in adding our condolences to the family of former Senator and Coral Springs Mayor Walter (Skip) Campbell. Skip was a personal friend and a great man who enriched the lives of everyone who knew him. His contributions to his state and community provide a lasting tribute and legacy to his memory. He is greatly missed.

Maggie

Hi, I’m Maggie. I am a mini long haired Dachshund. My favorite person is my Mom,Mom says she was so sad after she put her last doxie,Teddy, asleep & lucky for me, she couldn’t resist my winning personality and adopted me. My new favorite toy is this pink giraffe given to me by “Auntie” Lisa. I am a lap dog and spend most of my time on Mom’s lap, which is a little tight sometimes when Mom is trying to use her real laptop! My favorite thing to do is to snuggle and explore the backyard. I was last seen taking a nap in Coral Springs.
