ebruary 14th is a day to celebrate loved ones: we give them flowers or candies and we go on dates and share special moments. It, unfortunately, also marks a date we all want to forget. This Valentine’s Day will mark the one-year anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Fourteen students and three staff members died for no reason other than being in the 1200 building at school that day. Another 17 people were wounded. So many people in our community lost loved ones or had their lives inextricably changed on that fateful day. Hundreds of students and thousands of community members were traumatized. When remembering our loved ones, it might be helpful to call on the words of Scottish poet Thomas Campbell, “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” This Valentine’s Day take a moment to remember the people we have lost. Say their names. Remember the good moments: the dance recitals; sporting events; walks on a nice night; shared intimacies. Celebrate their lives this Valentine’s Day. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

7 Things You Must Know Before Putting Your Coral Springs, Parkland, Coconut Creek or Margate Home Up for Sale Kim Cox
Remember not so long ago, when you could make your fortune in real estate. It was nothing then, to buy a home, wait a short while, and then sell it at a large profit. And then do it all over again. Well, as you probably know, times have changed. As good as the market is right now, home prices are still below what they were at their peak. Buyers are far more discriminating and it’s more critical than ever to learn what you need to know to avoid costly seller mistakes in order to sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. Selling your home is one of the most important steps in your life. You need the tools to maximize your profits, maintain control, and reduce the stress that comes with the homeselling process. A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most
homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today's market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don't get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse -financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market.
As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled "The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar". To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free
1-855-603-3984 and enter 4000. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your free special report NOW to find out how you can get the most money for your home.

CAN DO KID
Teen with Tremendous Character Honored by City LYNNE MARTZALL
D
uring the Commission meeting held on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, a 17-year old student, who attends J.P. Taravella High School, was honored for going above and beyond to assist and protect a senior citizen. Joshua Chavez was on a Broward County School Bus when he saw an elderly female exit and attempt to cross a busy roadway outside of a crosswalk. Fearing for her safety, he exited the bus before his own stop to render assistance. Joshua quickly learned from the woman that she was trying to renew her passport at City Hall in the Mall (located at Coral Square Mall). Joshua not only escorted her safely across the busy roadway, he brought her inside and assisted her in filling out the application. Unfortunately, the senior citizen was originally from Czechoslovakia causing a language barrier, and potentially suffers from cognitive delays. He remained with

her for four hours and then escorted her back to the bus stop and waited with her until she was safely on the bus back to Fort Lauderdale. After explaining what he had experienced to his grandmother, he realized she may have suffered
from dementia and contacted the Fort Lauderdale Police Department to provide a welfare check on the senior. Employees at City Hall in the Mall who witnessed Joshua’s outstanding consideration of this senior, brought
it to the attention of the City Commission and school administration at J.P. Taravella so that he could be properly recognized for his selfless acts. Of the recognition, Joshua’s parents Pedro and Ana, who were in audience as he was recognized said, “We expect nothing less from Joshua, he is always willing to assist others. We are just so proud of him.” J.P. Taravella Assistant Principal Debra Johnson, who was also in attendance, offered her heartfelt appreciation of Joshua and his selflessness. Joshua, who graduates this June, is looking forward to attending college to pursue a degree in Design and Social Entrepreneurship, his hope is to be accepted to Parsons School of Design in NYC. We are confident young adults, Joshua, are the change-makers needed in our society!

There’s Always Something to Smile About at Sunshine KiDDS Dentistry
T
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
ypically, a visit to the dentist can make children (and their parents) anxious and fearful. However, Dr. Sheryl George knew her practice would be different. It most definitely was not going to be perceived as a “scary” place. The Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist and Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry wanted to create the most child-friendly and comprehensive dental practice where both children and adolescents can feel at home, and most importantly, at ease. Sunshine KiDDS Dentistry provides specialized dentistry with personalized attention and treatment using the latest technology for all their patients. You won’t find the traditional character or jungle themed office here. Upon walking into the Parkland office, the fun vibrant colors, and modern design instantly eliminate a youngster’s trepidation. Additionally, the welcoming and experienced staff greet everyone with warmth and kindness further abolishing any doubts and/ or fears. Appointments are scheduled appropriately, therefore allowing for minimal wait times, and a non-chaotic waiting area. The health and comfort for new-
borns through teens of seventeenyears-old are a priority, and Dr. George believes new technology plays a role in keeping her patients comfortable. The office uses wireless equipment for cleaning teeth which is quiet. Private examination rooms have televisions on the ceilings to keep a child’s focus upwards making dental cleanings and work almost effortless and a visit to the dentist most enjoyable. Dr. Sheryl George recently took some time to answer some questions about her new practice. What services does your practice offer? Sunshine KiDDS Dentistry is a comprehensive pediatric dental office that offers traditional preventative and restorative care, such as cleanings, fillings, and extractions, as well as fluoride-free alternatives for cleanings and handheld digital x-rays, which produces much lower exposure to radiation. Sedation dentistry and laser treatment for tongue and lip tie are just a few of the vast procedures that we also provide. What differentiates you from the competition? The difference is immediate as soon as you walk in the door. There is not a crowded waiting room- patient appointments are scheduled accord-

ing to the time the child needs and not according to a quota that needs to be met for the day. Our practice has private exam rooms, unlike many offices that have an open floor plan, which can sometimes scare other children. I understand that a parent’s presence can help a patient feel at ease, which is why parents are also welcome into the exam room with their child. What really differentiates us from our competition is EVERY child is treated with individualized care and comfort, which are our priorities! What do you offer that is new in the field? I make it a priority to be current on the latest innovative modalities that are both beneficial and child-friendly. One of the many is silver diamine fluoride (SDF). SDF is a topical medicament used to treat and prevent dental caries and relieve dental sensitivity. It is a potential option for children that may not be cooperative in the chair for definitive treatment such as fillings due to age or special needs. Do you accept insurance? Yes, we participate with several PPO plans and some Medicaid plans as well. We also offer an In-House plan to those patients that may not have insurance. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you or your practice? A common misconception in dentistry is that you can take your child with you to see your general dentist. Pediatric dentists, like myself, are specialists that complete a minimum of 24 months beyond dental school in an advanced education program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association (ADA). I earned my doctorate from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry (ranked the #1 dental school in the world, according to dentistrytoday.com). By being an age-specific specialty, pediatric dentistry encompasses disciplines such as behavior management, care of the medically and developmentally compromised and disabled patient,
craniofacial growth and development, caries prevention, sedation, pharmacological management, etc. I take my time with each family and do not make anyone feel rushed out the door. I pride myself on being from the Midwest and want everyone that steps into my office to feel like they’re part of the family.

Saturdays are for Sunsets and Yoga in Coral Springs LYNNE MARTZALL
E
ach day we are promised a sunrise and sunset, now, thanks to the City of Coral Springs Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), you can enjoy the sunset while connecting mind, body and breathing. The City proudly offers Sunset Yoga every Saturday evening at the ArtWalk from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. (during winter months). Yoga instructor Juliana Trejo, of Yoga 4 Life Studios West in Coral Springs, is on a mission to not
only grow the yoga community in our City, but also assist and serve more people on their journey toward personal growth and well-being. The class, Hatha yoga, is for all fitness levels. At the beginning of each class, Juliana reminds students that “Simple movement with conscious breath, creates profound changes.” An experienced Yogi, Juliana has been practicing yoga since 1981, after her mom recognized she needed an outlet to calm her temper. That opportunity was a gift, turned “healthy-addiction,” which she now shares with others. Sunset Yoga is free every Saturday at 5:30 p.m.; however, donations are accepted (and appreciated). Pre-registration is not required, but all participants must complete and sign a waiver, bring a yoga mat and water. You can download the waiver at www. coralsprings.org/craevents, print it and bring it with you. Please remember to check the Coral Springs CRA website often and follow the City on social media for potential class changes due to weather or sunset times. The ArtWalk is in Downtown Coral Springs (9405 NW 31st Court) and parking is free at the City Hall garage. Yoga 4 Life Studios West offers a variety of instruction, they are located at 9739 W. Sample Road, Coral Springs. For more information about classes and schedule, visit www.yoga4lifestudios.com.

Coral Springs Museum of Art Therapy Program focuses on the Power of Art and Healing BY NICOL JENKINS
A
rt can help people through the healing process. That was the goal when Coral Springs Museum of Art started an art therapy program. The Coral Springs Museum of Art hosted art therapy sessions for students and teachers to serve as a safe space to heal. This therapy, led to the application and approval of a $1 million-dollar art grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to the Cities of Parkland and Coral Springs to create several art projects focused on Healing After Gun Violence. Its project “Inspiring Community Healing After Gun Violence: The Power of Art” uses art to bring the community together in collective healing and reflection following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in February of 2018. Coral Springs Museum of Art is home to workshops and artist talks for community members and schools. Five art installations will be created with extensive input from residents and placed throughout the city. Community advisory participants will include members of the Coral Springs Police Department, Cultural Affairs division, licensed art therapists, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas students. “This project is a powerful example of the ways public art can bring communities together and draw attention to important issues. I hope that it will help bring some solace to people who have lost loved ones

to gun violence, including all the families in Parkland – and that it will help to prevent further tragedies by inspiring more people to act,” said Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, Chairman of Everytown for Gun Safety, and former Mayor of New York City. “The Marjory Stoneman Douglas tragedy has traumatized our community in ways we could never have imagined. We believe this project will be an important help with our community’s resilience,” said Parkland’s Mayor Christine Hunschofsky. “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School includes many Coral Springs residents. The tragic events of February 14, 2018 had a tremendous impact on our City and the City of Parkland. In our grief and sadness, our cities came together to work on healing by presenting this series of temporary public art projects,” said Lou Cimaglia, Acting Mayor of Coral Springs. Beginning on February 14, 2019, the first anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, the project will draw from the Coral Springs Museum of Art’s “Healing with Art,” program, which was established in the months following the shooting as an immediate response to address trauma experienced by students, teachers, and parents. Five artists were selected by the community advisory committee: David Best, internationally acclaimed artist
known for building large elaborate temples and intricate sculptures. Kate Gilmore, award winning installation, video and performance artist and professor of Art and Design at SUNY Purchase in New York. Carl Juste, Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist for the Miami Herald and founder of Iris Collective, a coalition of photographers, writers and cultural activists. Steven and William Ladd, two brothers with extensive experience in public art works with a rich body of work consisting of drawing, design and performance art. R&R Studios, steered by Rosario Marquardt and Roberto Behar, award winning multidisciplinary artists. “The collaborative experience of this public art project seeks to reduce feelings of isolation and build community bonds. We hope it will help us heal as a community from this trauma that even nearly a year later is still too raw,” said Julia Andrews, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Coral Springs Museum of Art. More information about the Public Art Challenge can be found on http://publicartchallenge.bloomberg.org.

TEE TO GREEN
Short Game Basic Tips BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL
I
n putting we all know that we want the ball to roll and not get airborne. In pitching we want the opposite. And in chipping we want either or a combination of air and ground. Here is the rule of thumb to help you accomplish both. No matter how skilled a player you may be, you seldom hit every green during a round. Even if you do, it boils down to your ability to execute the little recovery shots and/or the putts. Most amateur golfers make the short shots much too difficult. They tend to think there is something different and mysterious about them. In reality, all you need to do with these shots, including the putt, is capture a certain movement in the swing. First, if you want to roll the ball then the lower half of your body must stay completely still; no weight shift or knee or hip movements. If you are looking to get it airborne, a certain amount of lower body action is necessary. The trailing knee should follow the clubhead through impact. Remember, the knee moves to get the ball airborne and stays still to get the ball rolling. The Golf Swing Begins with A Good Set Up When we discuss “set up” we’re actually talking about three separate elements involved in addressing the ball, feet, knees and posture. Aim is simply where the club face is pointing. Alignment is the relationship of your body to the club face and target line. First we will start with our feet. Your feet should be spaced about shoulder width apart. This gives a solid base in which to move. If our feet are too close together, then we can lose our balance and fall over. If our feet are too far apart, then we can’t move to shift our weight. Next we move up to our knees. We want to bend our knees slightly to put us in an athletic position. The best way to describe it is to lock your knees by completely straightening your legs. Now just unlock them. This athletic position is similar to a defensive stance in basketball or baseball. At this point we should discuss posture. Make sure that you have your shoulders back and chest out. Make sure not to slouch. We want to look proud and confident that we know what we are doing. Finally, we move up to our hips. In our athletic position, with feet shoulder width apart and knees bent slightly, we want to bend from our waist. This will allow your arms to hang loosely in front of your body. You are now in the proper stance to hit a golf ball. No More Three Putts If you are putting well it fires you up mentally. If you miss a few shots, it’s not so bad because you made some good putts during the round. But if you’re putting poorly and you miss a couple of shots, those misses can ruin your round. Here’s a great tip to avoid those dreaded 3 putts. On the putting green, place five or six golf balls in a line from shortest to farthest from the hole. Practice hitting each ball in the hole, promoting only two putts. This works on distance control. Remember, how far back the club is taken determines how far the ball goes. n PGA Professional Dean Sklar is a member of the Quarter Century Club of the PGA of America, an elite group of members who have served the PGA with honor and pride for 25 years. We are excited to offer the PediaSuit Protocol™ to our patients. It is an intensive therapy for neurological disorders like cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries and other conditions which affect the child’s motor and cognitive functions. Children wear a soft dynamic orthotic which consists of a cap, vest, shorts, kneepads and special adapted shoes that are interconnected with elastic bands. The PediaSuit creates a supporting unit to align the body as close to normal as possible, reestablishing correct postural alignment and weight bearing which is fundamental in normalizing muscle tone, sensory and vestibular function. Additionally, for children diagnosed with autism we offer in-home services, school consultation, advocacy and parent training.

Reviews on YELP and Google 44 FEBRUARY 2019 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY ebruary 14, 2018 was a day our community changed forever. We all remember where we were and what we were doing when we received word of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that took the lives of Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Beigel, Martin Duque, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup and Peter Wang. One only needs to look back at texts, emails, phone messages and social media posts from that day to be reminded of the confusion, the shock, the uncertainty and the fear that consumed us that day and that remains with so many. Fear continued to escalate as parents frantically searched for their children, rumors of those murdered surfaced, the media frenzy descended on our city, images of our bedroom community and people that we knew were now making national and international news. The worst moments were when the reality was hitting us…receiving phone calls from friends who had lost their loved ones…walking into the Marriott hotel and seeing so many people we knew who were waiting to hear about the fate of their family members. We had always heard this could happen anywhere, just look at Columbine and Sandy Hook…but now it happened here…in Parkland. The vigil the following night showed our community the outpouring of support we had from all over. The next day the funerals started. Thousands of people from all over attended the funerals to express their condolences and show their support and love. We saw so many people we knew at these funerals. We cried together, hugged one another and wondered how any of this could be happening. How could these families get through this, how could the community get through this, how long would we have before people would forget about us and just move on? Then the names of the 17 injured were released Ashley Baez, Anthony Borges, Isabel Chequer, Justin Colton, Alexander Dworet, Samantha Fuentes, Samantha Grady, Marian Kabachenko, Kyle Laman, Stacey Lippel, Kheshava Managapuram, Samantha Mayor, Daniela Menescal, William Olson, Genesis Valentin, Benjamin Wikander and Madeleine Wilford. We realized the incredible physical injuries and scars that existed in addition to the emotional and traumatic scars for everyone who was there that day. In the aftermath we had marches, walk outs and walk ups. We had new and reinvigorated activists of all ages – family members, students, parents, neighbors, friends and many who had previously given up hope. Changes were made to the Florida law and to laws in other states. Investigations were underway, reports were published and elections were happening. Throughout all of this we had people helping one another - local people, people who lived far away, friends, neighbors, loved ones and complete strangers. We were reminded of how precious and fleeting life can be. Parents hugged their children tighter and family members and friends said “I Love You” more often. As we honor and remember those who were taken on February 14, we continue to work toward healing the community, looking out for one another, fixing the problems, improving the laws and making a difference in our world. We cannot do this in one day or one year and we cannot do this alone. Our families, our students, our volunteers and our community have been tested and we are rising to the occasion. Continue to stand with us, continue to remember us and continue to be there for one another as we navigate this new path forward.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF: CORAL SPRINGS
February Update CHIEF CLYDE PARRY
I
would like to start off by wishing everyone a very happy and safe New Year. As we begin the New Year, I like to reflect on the last, taking some time to examine our successes and failures. I do this in an attempt to learn from the past so that we can become a better police department in the future. I am always looking for ways to improve our service to our community. On December 22, 2018, members of our department gave away bikes to kids in need at the Kreul Classic Basketball Tournament. We love giving back to our community and participating in tremendous events like this. I want to thank our generous partners at Walmart for supplying the bicycles and the Kreul Classic Organization Committee for coordinating this fantastic event! January kicked off our Safety Town classes with an estimated 2,000 children expected to complete the program this year. The Safety Town curriculum is taught by Coral Springs Police Officers and Fire Fighters and provides grade school children with basic safety skills. These skills include fire safety, when and how to call 911, how to safely cross the street, how to determine the difference between first responders’ uniforms, and empowering children to report inappropriate behavior to trusted adults. The goal of this very successful program is to keep the children of our community safe. In addition to our Safety Town program, the Coral Springs Police Department also provided situational awareness and self-defense training to children through the RAD Kids program. The program strengthens families, encourages physical fitness, teaches realistic physical skills and core safety values to live by through its program. The RAD Kids curriculum is a fun, activity-based program including lectures, safety drills, physical skills to resist or stop violence or harm, and dynamic simulation. I would recommend this fantastic training to everyone. I hope all of you had the opportunity to see our K-9 demonstration on Saturday, January 12th at the J.P. Taravella Trojan Trot event. This 5-k was organized by the Taravella Criminal Justice Program. Our K-9 demonstrations give community members a chance to see how our K9 Officers perform while protecting the community. I would like to thank Mr. Needle and the Criminal Justice Program for putting this event together. We will continue our community events throughout the year beginning with Coffee with a Cop sponsored by Westside Bagels on Friday, February 1st from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. We are also excited to partner with Special Olympics again this year! We’ll be working with local businesses and athletes to raise money at our Tip-a-Cop events for the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. The Torch Run benefits individuals with intellectual challenges and special needs from now until the culmination of the event on May 1st. Although, I am hopeful that 2019 will bring renewed vitality, good health, and progress to our community, there are constant reminders of the evil act that effected so many of us on February 14, 2018. As the anniversary of that horrific event approaches, it is my hope that we take time to reflect on how we can honor the memories of the victims from that tragic day. Perhaps we can all be a little kinder to each other and make time for the people we love. I know I will make every effort to honor them by being part of the solutions that could help reduce the chances of an incident like that occurring in our community again. In closing, if you see something suspicious or unusual in the community, please “Make a Call and Make a Difference.” You can call our nonemergency number at (954) 344-1800 or dial 911 for emergencies. We would prefer to come to a call that turns out to be nothing, rather than find a crime later that we could have prevented. Please help us by remembering to remove valuables from your car, locking your doors and never leave the key fob in your car. If you haven’t already, please connect with me on Facebook @ChiefParry.
MESSAGE FROM CITY OF CORAL SPRINGS COMMISSION
February Update
I
t is hard to believe another year has passed, as we move into 2019 and reflect on the past year, it is impossible to do so without great sadness and grief. The school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, which ended the innocent lives of 14 students and three educators, and wounded countless others, shook us all to the core. Valentine’s Day is traditionally a day to celebrate the love and affection we have for one another, instead it was a shattered by hate and horror. Our intent to reflect on this tragedy is not to relive its reverberating effects on our community, but rather shine a light on the kindness and compassion of our residents, businesses and people from all over the world in the aftermath of February 14. From the moment tragedy struck our community, we witnessed businesses and residents coordinate food deliveries to grief-stricken families, memorial scholarships formed and fundraisers in memory of lives lost. Teenagers, parents and educators took their anger and frustration and turned it into action, with peaceful marches and demonstrations. The Coral Springs Museum of Art hosted art therapy sessions for students and teachers to serve as a safe space to heal. This therapy, led to the application and approval of a $1 million-dollar art grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to the Cities of Parkland and Coral Springs to create several art projects focused on - Healing After Gun Violence. The temporary public art projects will address important civic issues and demonstrate an ability to generate public-private collaborations, celebrate creativity and urban identity, and strengthen local economies. The Power of Art represents the unity of our cities coming together, while promoting our hopes for healing now and in the future. Undoubtedly, 2018 was a difficult year and tragedy struck again when on October 23rd we suffered a devastating loss with the sudden death of Mayor Skip Campbell. A true statesman and pillar of the Coral Springs community, the passing of Mayor Campbell is something we continue to deal with emotionally and professionally on the dais. His passing has forced us to make difficult decisions going forward. As a Commission, and as dictated by our City’s Charter, we must hold a Special Election to fill the Mayoral vacancy. Working with our City Clerk and the Supervisor of Elections, we have decided to host the election on Tuesday, March 12, 2019. It is important that with reflection comes foresight, so as we look to the future of 2019, we look forward to the many great things that will take place in the City of Coral Springs. These include exciting events which take place right on the Great Lawn of City Hall like Jazz festivals, the Farmers’ Market, Food Truck series and family-friendly concerts. The demolition of the Financial Plaza and revitalization of Downtown Coral Springs is expected to start in February. The Bloomberg Philanthropy art exhibit grand openings, the 4th of July celebration, continued sports league tournaments and so much more is what makes our City such a wonderful community to call home. As we look toward the future, our City will welcome a newly elected Mayor, who will certainly provide new leadership and vision for the City and its residents. On behalf of the City of Coral Springs, we wish you all a very safe and prosperous New Year. OURCITYMEDIA.COM | OUR CITY | FEBRUARY 2019 47

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE MAYOR: CORAL SPRINGS
February Update VICE MAYOR JOY CARTER hope everyone has had a great start to the New Year! We have many exciting events involving outdoor festivals, fitness and food planned throughout the month of February. The Coral Springs Farmers’ Market is on Sunday, February 10 and Sunday, February 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the ArtWalk in Downtown Coral Springs (405 NW 31st Court). I
the City Hall garage. Are you looking for a fun way to meet your fitness goals, while meeting new friends? Check out Sunset Yoga at the ArtWalk in Downtown Coral Springs every Saturday evening during the month of February from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sponsored by the City of Coral Springs CRA, this free Yoga class is taught by Juliana Trejo from Yoga 4 Life Studios West. Participants should wear comfortable clothing, bring a yoga mat and bottle of water. Registration is not required, but participants must complete a waiver. This month marks the first anniversary of the tragedy that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Personally, I plan to reflect and take time to honor the lives lost to violence on that day. Hands On Broward, a nonprofit organization that transforms communities through meaningful hands-on projects, is working with Parkland families to create 17 service projects in honor of each victim. To learn more or get involved, visit www.handsonbroward.org/ ParklandHearts. Regardless of what you plan to do on February 14 to honor the victims, I ask that you take a moment out of your day to do something positive to promote hope, encouragement and healing. As we announced in late 2018, the Cities of Parkland and Coral Springs were awarded a Bloomberg Philanthropy Art Grant: The Power of Art: Inspiring Community Healing After Gun Violence. This two-year project, starts with worldrenowned artist, David Best, who will work with community members to build a temple, with no religious affiliations, as a place where the community can gather and share stories and memories. Through building together, the community will produce a positive place out of their loss. As details emerge on this art project and others, information will be added to our City’s website at www.coralsprings.org and via social media. Each year, the Taste of Coral Springs lights up the night at the Center for the Arts, as guests sample delectable food, wine, beer and spirits from the finest local restaurants. This year’s event is on Tuesday, February 26, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Taste of Coral Springs is a non-profit organization, with all proceeds going to local children’s charities. To learn more about the event, food vendors and to purchase tickets, visit www.tasteofcoralsprings.org. All food and spirits are included with the price of admission. Rolling into March, on Friday the 1st, Coral Springs will host its second annual Innovate Downtown, where locals will enter a competition to feature products, innovative solutions and ideas to a panel of judges. These innovations will be displayed the following day, Saturday, March 2nd, at the City’s Unplugged outdoor concert and food truck event. The concert is on the Great Lawn of City Hall, starting at 6 p.m. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for this free, acoustic performance (food and spirits will be available for purchase). For more information on both events, visit www.coralsprings.org/events. I am also excited for the 15th Annual Coral Springs Festival of the Arts at The Walk on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17. The event features life-size sculptures, spectacular paintings, one-of-a-kind jewels, photography, ceramics, and more both days from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. The Festival also includes a separate Craft Festival with a full green market as well as live, cultural entertainment. To learn more, visit www.artfestival.com. As a resident, it is very important that you exercise your civic duty and vote for our City’s new Mayor on Tuesday, March 12. The Special Election, which is coordinated through Broward County Supervisor of Elections, will have polling locations open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you prefer to vote by mail or would like to find your polling location, visit www.browardsoe.org. If you would like to meet with me to discuss any City issues, feel free to make an appointment by calling 954-344-5911. re you interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement? Today, I will share with you a little bit about what it takes to become a police officer and maybe, this could be the right job for you! People decide to embark on a career in law enforcement for many reasons, but most often we hear from applicants that say their current job or career is not providing them with the challenge and fulfillment that they were expecting. Imagine having the ability to come to work each day, doing something completely different. Rarely is police work routine. The opportunities to diversify your job tasks and knowledge are never-ending. While all police officers begin as road patrol officers, depending on your interests, there are different avenues that your career can take you on as you gain experience in your field. You may discover that investigating crimes piques your interest. Or, maybe closing a case and knowing that you solved a crime that helped a victim, and potentially prevented another crime is appealing to you. If that is your interest, the Criminal Investigations Unit may be your next step in your career. You may be passionate about traffic, vehicle and pedestrian safety on the roadways; the Traffic Unit would be perfect for you. If you are the person who loves being out in the community and interacting with students, citizens, and business owners, then our Community Relations Unit may be that next step in your career. If you are currently working in a non-criminal justice related field and want to make a change, consider going back to college to obtain your Criminal Justice degree. It’s one of the requirements for most police departments. Keep in mind that when we interview candidates for police officer positions, we are looking for those who show a commitment to law enforcement and knowledge that sets them apart from the rest. As you begin to research and make decisions on which police departments you want to apply to (hopefully, the Margate Police Department), keep these few tips in mind: Before submitting your application, you need to complete a variety of tests through the Broward College Institute of Public Safety. The testing requirements consist of a physical agility test, Criminal Justice Basic Ability Test (CJBAT), and a swim test. Every department has different requirements, so be sure you’re meeting all the requirements of the department you are applying to BEFORE submitting your application. Also, be sure that your application is thoroughly completed, paying special attention to previous or current employment dates. Familiarize yourself with interviewing techniques and practice in front of a mirror. This will build your confidence as you go into the interview. Do research on the agency and the city or county in which it serves. Dress in full business attire; jeans are definitely not the route you want to take. Take pride in your appearance and dress for success.

Heart health: Important questions to ask your doctor. Your heart is like the engine in your car. It’s the main component that makes everything run. And just like your car requires maintenance to keep things running smoothly, your heart needs care on a regular basis too. “The center of the cardiovascular system is the Robert Cubeddu, MD heart, It’s responsible for your vitality,” says Robert Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of the Tomsich Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida. Taking care of your heart is essential for a long life. Heart disease is the number one killer of adults in the United States. Some heart issues are genetic and others are caused by personal choices. Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist Diego Sadler, MD explains, “Not only is it important for patients to listen to their doctor, it’s also important for them to ask their physician the right questions.” Drs. Cubeddu and Sadler provide general Diego Sadler, MD answers to these important questions about heart health. However, your doctor knows you best and can provide personalized answers to help ensure that you understand how to take proper care of your heart. Will blood tests and other screenings tell me if my heart is healthy? Knowing your BMI, cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels will give you a clearer picture of your cardiovascular strengths or risks. “These numbers can be indicators for issues that can lead to cardiovascular problems,” says Dr. Sadler.
Does my family medical history put me at a greater risk for heart disease? Anyone can be at risk, but a family history of heart issues – such as heart attack and heart disease – can mean you have increased risk for developing heart problems. If this is the case, healthy behaviors may be even more important for you. Will smoking increase my chances of having heart disease? Individuals who smoke are more likely to experience heart attacks than non-smokers. “The sooner you quit the better,” advises Dr. Cubeddu. Are diet and exercise important for keeping my heart in tip-top shape? A healthy diet and exercise are some of the best tools you can use to keep your heart healthy. At least 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week, is recommended. Eat foods that are low in fat, salt and calories. Include fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, lean proteins and nuts. “Having an open dialogue with your physician and asking questions are the best ways for you to learn about what to do before cardiovascular issues arise,” says Dr. Cubeddu. To learn more about what you can do to keep your heart healthy, visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Heart. To make an appointment with Dr. Cubeddu or Dr. Sadler or any of our heart specialists at a convenient South Florida location, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Heart.

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
Slender Fit U Will Help You Lose Weight and Get Healthier BY DEBBY TEICH
I
s focusing on your health and well-being at the top of your list of New Year’s resolutions? After celebrating the holidays with family and friends and indulging in high calorie foods at festive meals and parties, are your clothes feeling a little tighter and the numbers on the scale a little higher? If you have struggled with diets in the past, Slender Fit U can help you lose that holiday bulge and achieve your goal of getting healthier in 2019. It works fast - without exercise and hunger pains! Slender Fit U is helping clients lose the weight, get healthier and even reduce or eliminate medications with a very simple to follow medically supervised weight loss program. Clients typically lose 1⁄2 to 1 pound of actual body fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods. The Slender Fit U program also helps clients modify their relationship with food and eating habits, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher, often referred to as the “HCG Guru,” truly understands the benefits of the program and works closely with her clients to help them achieve maximize results. She lost 25 pounds in six weeks on Geri Kelleher, Owner the program and has and Program Director kept it off for 11 years. Slender Fit U changed her life forever. Soon after, she started helping others achieve their own weight loss goals. In 2010, she opened a clinic in Davie. A few years later she opened a second clinic in Coral Springs. Geri answered some commonly asked questions about the Slender Fit U program. What do love most about your job? The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Over the years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this easy program. How does Slender Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage available for weight loss. Do you offer B12 shots? Yes. We also give injectable prescription B12. The Lipotropic Vitamin B12 shots help detoxify the liver and increase metabolism and energy levels. The combination of HCG and B12 helps assure maximum weight loss without feeling hungry all the time or suffering from bad moods. Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this
was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” How much can clients expect to lose? The typical person will lose ½ to 1 pound of body fat per day without exercise or special foods. How many programs do you offer? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. On the 23-day program, women typically lose 15 pounds and men will typically lose 20 to 25 pounds. On the 46-day program, the numbers average 30 pounds for women and 40-50 pounds for men. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the HCG/B12 program, you go on a threeweek maintenance program, gradually introducing a higher calorie diet and making sure that you do not gain any more than two or three pounds. This will then help lock in a new “normal” weight for your body allowing you to more easily maintain the weight loss as you return to normal eating. The diet helps “rebalance” the metabolism. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, you easily modify your relationship with food and eating to maintain long- term weight loss. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Before starting the diet, you will get a physical examfrom one of the medical doctors associated with the program. This is included in the cost of the program and involves no co-pay on your part. David lost 53 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE
AFTER
Maria lost 27 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE
AFTER
"I'm very happy with my results. It is also a very friendly environment. I will recommend Slender Fit U to my friends and family." – Maria
Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low-calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed. How does the weight loss program work? It is a scientifically researched program that combines HCG and a low-calorie diet during the 23 or 46-day program. HCG, which is short for Human Chronic Gonadotropin, is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists normally in men and women. The female body uses this substance during pregnancy where high levels are produced to almost completely control the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? Because HCG is a natural substance, the program is very safe with no side effects. What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes proteins, fruit and vegetables. This makes for an easy transition onto stabilization and then back to regular life. Are clients hungry on the diet? Most people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They are getting anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat, depending on how much fat they have. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. Slender Fit U clients usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800-calorie limit!
SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 9
"I feel incredible. I haven't weighed this little in at least a decade. The diet was easy to follow and I lost over 50 pounds. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is serious about losing a lot of weight." – David
Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.
