The Best Valentine’s Day Gift
F
ebruary is typically the month we shower those we love with gifts of chocolates and flowers, and maybe a piece of jewelry. This Valentine’s Day, why not give your loved one a gift that truly shows how much you care about them – the gift of life. February is American Heart Month and it’s the perfect time to help your family adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle and learn lifesaving CPR. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), someone in this country suffers a heart attack every 34 seconds. This is when blood flow to the heart is blocked. During a heart attack, seconds count. It is critical to keep the blood flowing until paramedics arrive. That’s why the AHA is encouraging everyone, even children, to learn hands-only CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). Throughout the month of February, local municipalities, fire departments, and other agencies and health care providers will be offering hands-only CPR classes. It consists of two simple steps – call 9-1-1 and then push hard and fast until help arrives. Immediate CPR can double or triple a person’s chances of survival after cardiac arrest. Take the time to learn this lifesaving technique, because the life you save will likely be that of someone you know. This is also the month to adopt a heart healthy lifestyle, if you haven’t already. That means eating nutrient-rich foods, exercising more (with at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week), and living a tobacco-free life. So, this Valentine’s Day, show your loved ones how much you really care take the time to learn or refresh your CPR skills and commit to living a hearthealthy life. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Sacred Art Tour Comes to Coral Springs Museum of Art BY NICOL JENKINS
E
xperience ancient Tibetan art form at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. The Sacred Art Tour will take place from February 11th through February 16th at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, located at 2855A Coral Springs Drive. A group of monks from the Drepung Gomang monastery in India will be in residency at the Coral Springs Museum of Art to share elements of their cultural traditions, including building a sand mandala, teaching culinary workshops, creating a butter sculpture and a blessing garden. An important part of the mission for the Sacred Art Tour is to bring awareness to the ongoing plight of Tibetans after 50 years of occupation. They are also here to raise donations to help support their way of life at the Monastery. They bring teachings of ancient ways and beliefs that do, even now, create the possibility of global peace, nonviolent conflict resolution, compassion and wisdom. The first visit of the Sacred Art Tour was January 2016. This will be their 4th visit to Coral Springs. The Opening Ceremony will take place on February 11th at 10 am. Experience a symbolic walk through our peace garden and into the Museum’s main gallery led by the monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery. The Tibetan Buddhist monks will perform a blessing of the space with chanting and traditional instruments. Once completed, they will begin marking and measuring the mandala. The monks will lead many creative
sessions including “Mani Stone” painting, which is decorating stones using Tibetan symbols of peace; “Butter sculpture”, an ancient Tibetan art form using Play-Doh instead of butter to create beautiful colorful 3D sculptures; culinary opportunities to learn how to make Tibetan vegetable and beef filled momos; and dharma talks and meditation given by a Buddhist monk. “The museum hopes to provide a unique opportunity to learn about other cultures and experience their ancient art forms, especially the sand mandala,” said Julia Andrews, Executive Director of the Coral Springs Museum of Art, “This event is a fundraising effort by the Drepung Gomang Monastery in India. Proceeds from their US tour, and in particular, here in Coral Springs, directly benefit the Buddhist Tibetan monks who live and study at this monastery under the Dalai Lama.” The Sacred Art Tour is a great event for the entire community. “This event brings the community together in peace and unity to learn about and understand other cultures through art. The museum makes this experience available to all students, adults and children of our community and surrounding communities,” said Andrews. For more information on The Sacred Art Tour, visit coralspringsmuseum.org.

Alyssa’s Law and Jaime’s Law: What They Are & Why You Should Care BY TERRY JAILLET
F
red Guttenberg and Lori Alhadeff have allot in common. They are both active in the community, loving parents and residents of Parkland. They also, unfortunately, have another horrible thing in common: Fred’s daughter, Jaime and Lori’s daughter Alyssa were both murdered at Stoneman Douglas. In response to the tragedy, both Fred and Lori took action to try to prevent a similar tragedy from ever happening again. Each co-founded a non-profit. Fred launched Orange Ribbons for Jaime while Lori co-founded Make Our Schools Safe as well as successfully becoming elected to the Broward County School Board.
Jaime Guttenberg
Make Our Schools Safe’s mission is “to empower students and staff to help create and maintain a culture of safety and vigilance in a secure school environment.” The mission of Orange Ribbons For Jaime is “to honor Jaime by supporting programs that were important to her, as well as those dedicated to pursuing common-sense gun safety reforms.” In order to achieve their visions, each organization is pursuing legislative action. The bills being proposed in statehouses across the country as well as with congress bear each of the lost girls’ names, but are, in fact, quite different. Alyssa’s Law Alyssa’s Law addresses the issue of law enforcement response time when a life-threatening emergency occurs at a school. The law calls for the installation of warning lights and a panic alarm in all schools to provide the fastest possible support during a code red. In a code red, every second counts. It is currently working its way through the Florida legislature and has already been signed into law in New Jersey. Jaime’s Law Jaime’s law would require the implementation of
mandatory enhanced background checks for the sale of gun ammunition. In essence, the purchase of ammunition would require the same types of checks as a person purchasing a gun would. The bill was proposed by a number of Democrats in the U.S. Congress but has stalled. Alyssa Alhadeff It is decidedly more controversial than Alyssa’s Law as many on the right believe it would impair their second amendment rights. Both organizations are pursuing the goal of a safer world for our children and encourage members of the community to get involved.. etting to and from Miami just got easier and faster thanks to the new 75 Express Bus. It provides direct service from the park and ride lots at the BB&T Center in Sunrise and Miami Gardens Drive (@ I-75) to the Miami Airport Station, where you can transfer to local rail or bus to destinations throughout MiamiDade County. This premium bus service has started, and readers can get a FREE 3-DAY PASS to try South Florida’s nationally recognized transit service today. For more information on how to get your FREE 3-DAY PASS, go to www.TryTransitFree.com. Fast, Comfortable, Convenient
The Express Buses are used primarily by riders who own their own cars, but welcome the convenience, comfort and cost savings of commuting in the coach-style buses. One-way fares on the 75 Express Bus are available for as little as $1.30 and monthly passes cost less than $100. The 75 Express Bus will offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioned comfort, comfortable seating and will travel in the express lanes for faster more reliable travel times. Service will be provided every 30 minutes during the peak morning and afternoon commute times. Commuters can take com-

more convenient to use public transit. The 75 Express will offer better connectivity to Miami and give commuters an economical and stress-free option for traveling to their destination, especially those who live and work along the I-75 corridor,” said Transportation Director Chris Walton. SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
W
hen considering sending your child to a private school, it is vital to take into account various factors, especially if you have to pay a pretty penny to attend. In this day and age, it is evident that academics are getting more rigorous, standardized tests are increasingly difficult, and the pressure of college is no joke. Colleges today want a well-rounded, educated, unique students, so it is key to find a private school that will enable your child to embody these qualities. Find a school with good extracurriculars The first factor to consider should be the size of the school. It will be harder for your child to stand out in a very large class. Most colleges compare students against their class, not other schools, so this factor is very important. It will be easier for your child to stand out in a small pond than in a large sea of students. Additionally, you should ensure that there are ample extracurriculars at your selected private school that appeal to your child. Having good extracurriculars and sports teams should be a deciding factor when selecting a private school. Colleges often look to recruit athletes from wellknown private schools. A wide variety of extracurriculars gives your child the option to be involved in an organization that actually interest them. Colleges want ambitious students, so leadership positions in clubs and organizations are crucial to your child’s success. Prioritizes academics and education Another factor to consider would be the passing rates of Advanced Placement (AP) and Cambridge’s Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) exams. High passing rates indicate that the educators at the school

Passing an exam often allows the student to receive college credit, so

they won’t have to retake that course in college. Not only do high passing rates increase the likelihood of your child receiving college credit, but it implies that your child is more likely to do better in the course throughout the year as well. Academics that are challenging, high passing rates on ap exams Apart from just the passing rate itself, parents should also pay attention to score distributions. The highest possible AP score is a 5, and the lowest passing score is a 3. A school may have a high passing rate, but it is important to know the proportion of students receiving 4’s and 5’s, not just 3’s. Different scores may earn a student different credits at certain colleges. Although it is important for passing rates to be high, the environment of the school will also contribute to your child’s success. School should be a place where students should feel comfortable, safe, and welcomed. It is now more important than ever that your child feels safe at school, but as a parent, you should be certain that you feel comfortable just the same as you send your child off to that school every weekday.
Guidance counselors that care about your child’s future Most importantly, students should feel comfortable reaching out to guidance counselors and advisors. Having supportive guidance counselors and understanding teachers can truly have a positive impact on your child’s high school experience. Counselors should be available to aid with schedules, college applications, college essays, and even personal issues. Good college advisors and counselors are imperative to making the college application process as seamless as possible. It is important to make sure that guidance counselors and college advisors are accessible to students at all times. Overall, there are many factors to consider when selecting the right private school for your child. The importance of these factors may vary depending on your child’s interests and priorities. Although this information may seem overwhelming, it should be helpful in narrowing down which school is the best fit for your child. With such amazing options in the area, no matter where your child ends up, they will be receiving an amazing education.
Less invasive option for valve disease treatment offers benefit with fewer risks Aortic valve stenosis is one of the most common and serious conditions affecting the heart’s valves. It Robert J. Cubeddu, MD is a narrowing of the aortic valve opening, which is the passage for oxygen-rich blood to leave the heart and go out into the body. When the valve opening is narrowed, the flow of this blood is blocked or reduced. This condition is most common in people 65 or older, severely affecting nearly 500,000 people in the United States each year. It can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, congestive heart failure, and, ultimately, death if left untreated. A revolutionary approach to treatment Replacing the diseased valve is the standard treatment for most patients with aortic stenosis. Until recently, however, the replacement had to be done through a surgical procedure in which the patient’s chest was opened in order to access the heart. In recent years, the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure has revolutionized treatment for aortic stenosis. It is minimally invasive, allowing the surgeon to replace the valve through a catheter placed in the femoral
artery, which runs up the thigh, through the abdomen and to the heart. A multitude of studies have shown TAVR to be a safe and effective alternative to traditional valve replacement, offering patients minimal risk and discomfort, a shorter hospital stay (usually only one or two days vs. five to seven days with the open procedure), and a prompt recovery. “Aortic stenosis is a condition that offers a malignant course. As with open heart surgery, this procedure cures the condition,” says Robert J. Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine and Section Head for Structural Heart Disease at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Tomsich Heart and Vascular Center, “Many centers offer TAVR but our team has tremendous expertise and experience in this type of treatment.” Specialists in Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Heart and Vascular Center have more than 10 years of experience with TAVR procedures and the center performs among the highest volume of implants in the state of Florida. Our experience in TAVR and our expertise in structural heart disease translate to the best possible outcomes for our patients. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Paternity & Fatherhood: What Unwed Fathers Need to Know BY: TAYANE OLIVEIRA, ESQ. amily dynamics have been quickly changing in our society where many couples are choosing to have children without getting married. With the number of unwed fathers on the rise it is important that they are educated regarding Florida law and their rights. Knowing these rights is extremely important so that the mother does not dictate your visitation schedule or regulate/prevent your ability to co-parent your child. Paternity is the legal establishment of your rights as a father. Contrary to popular belief, inclusion of the father’s name on a child’s birth certificate alone does not establish paternity. Basically, a father on the birth certificate has all the obligations (support) and no rights until a court order is entered establishing their paternity. This means that the mother is entitled to primary residential care and custody unless a court of competent jurisdiction enters an order stating otherwise. Because the mother is the sole custodian of a child born out of wedlock, she may leave the state before a paternity order is entered and cannot be ordered to return until that order is entered. The first step of an unwed father should be to establish paternity. This simply proves that you are the father of the child but doesn’t automatically grant you rights regarding custody and visitation. A court order that includes a parenting plan must be obtained establishing those rights by filing a Petition for Paternity with your local court. A parenting plan is usually a negotiated agreement between the unwed parents, or decided by a judge, and will further explain your rights regarding custody, visitation and support. On some occasions an administrative agency, such as the Department of Revenue, may get involved in order to collect child support. Many times, in these instances, the court will enter an Order of Paternity, but will fail to establish a visitation schedule. Therefore, it is important that you follow the correct procedures to fully attain custody rights. A paternity action is much like a divorce, without the division of property. Mandatory financial disclosure is required so that child support can be calculated. If paternity is in question, under most circumstances, a DNA test can be conducted, but it cannot be compelled until the child is born. If you sign the child’s birth certificate, you are admitting paternity. If you do not sign the birth certificate, you must register in a statewide Putative Father Registry in order to preserve your parental rights. Without registration, the child can be legally adopted by someone else, and you will be unable to contest that order. Additionally, parentage actions for same-sex couples can be challenging. The laws in Florida are in a state of constant change in this regard, and our firm is educated and equipped to assist you with any of these complicated matters. As your lawyers, our role is to guide you through this process, with compassion, expertise and efficiency. We will provide balance and objectivity to assist you in making difficult decisions. We will try to manage your expectations so that they are realistic. We will make recommendations to you designed to put you in the best possible position to achieve the result that you want. Together, we will develop a strategy that will maximize your chances of getting the outcome that you desire.

Broward County Schools to Commemorate MSD Victims with Day of Service BY JOHN DUKA
This Valentine’s Day, students and faculty across Broward County will observe a Day of Service and Love in commemoration of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Rather than attending classes, students have been given the option to participate in a number of service projects as a way to give back to the community in honor of the 17 souls that were lost two years ago. In collaboration with HandsOnBroward, the City of Parkland, the City of Coral Springs and the Interfaith Council, schools across the district will participate in activities and service projects for their schools and local communities. “A Day of Service and Love honors our fallen eagles and our families and communities impacted by this tragedy,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We invite our entire community to be a meaningful part of the ongoing process of healing by pausing at 10:17 a.m. to honor and remember.” There will be no academic activities during the day of service. After participating in the programs, students will be released from school early. In addition, there will be a county-wide moment of silence at 10:17 AM across the school district. District schools
developed variety of activity plans for students for different aged students. Their objective is to engage students while raising awareness about important issues and causes. Projects at more than 230 sites, across the district, will include campus beautification, celebrating firstresponders by serving them breakfast, preparing meal packages for local food banks and more. Additional mental health professionals and law enforcement officers will be on campus throughout the day. The schools encourage parents to pay particular attention to their children’s electronic devices
leading up to the commemoration and to encourage them to alert and adult to any unusual social media activity. Dale Mandell, President and CEO of HandsOn Broward commented, “This event is truly an example of the community coming together to honor all of those affected by the tragedy. Through the selfless acts of volunteers, our schools and communities will shine.” For more infomation on the Day of Service or to find out how you can become involved contact Dr. Philip Harris, program recorery manager at BCPS at754-321-1660

Imagine a World Without Cancer - Join the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life on March 7th BY: JOHN DUKA
T
he American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay For Life of Parkland and Coral Springs invites the communities of Parkland, Coral Springs, Margate, and Coconut Creek to attend the annual event on March 7 at the Sportsplex at Coral Springs. The Relay For Life movement continues to be the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event, with 2.5 million participants globally uniting to save lives from cancer. “Our theme is ‘Imagine a World Without Cancer’,” said event co-lead Megan Mila. “Over 50 teams and more than 500 participants will join together to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer.”
WHAT: The Relay For Life WHEN: March 7, 5 - 10pm WHERE: Coral Springs Sportsplex (next to Glades High School) Register: www.RelayForLife.org/parklandfl Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Tacoma, Washington, in 1985, Relay For Life events around the world have raised nearly $6.5 billion to help ACS attack cancer. Symbolizing the battle waged around the clock by those facing cancer, the Parkland and Coral Springs event lasts five hours and empowers the community to take a stand against cancer. The March 7th event starts at 5:00 pm and takes place on the football field next to Coral Glades High School. ACS estimates that one out of three people in the US will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Funds raised help ACS fund and conduct breakthrough research, and give cancer patients and their families the resources they need, like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline for answers and support. Last year’s Relay For Life of Parkland and Coral Springs raised more than $110,000 to help ACS save lives, celebrate
lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. Event co-lead Mike Fiorello has been involved in Relay For Life for many years and now walks to remember his son Adam, who lost his battle with a rare pediatric cancer in 2016. Recognizing and honoring cancer survivors and their caregivers is his priority. “Our goal is to host over 100 cancer survivors at the event. The opening ceremony will include a special Survivors Lap. Survivors and their caregivers will also enjoy a complimentary dinner. After sunset, we light Luminarias to remember those we have lost, to celebrate cancer survivors, and to show those affected by cancer that they are not alone.”

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: PARKLAND
Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY o matter how much time passes, February 14 will always be a day that profoundly impacts our community. While most people in other parts of the country have moved on, we continue to work to move forward, all while respectfully acknowledging the incredible loss, pain, and trauma that affected so many in our community. We will never forget the 17 whose lives were taken that day – Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Biegel, Martin Duque, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup, and Peter Wang. Each one of these people left behind grieving family members and friends. For those who lost loved ones, every day is difficult and February 14 will especially be so. Our hearts go out to them. In addition to those that were taken, we also acknowledge and remember the 17 people who were physically injured on February 14 and the hundreds more who were traumatized. Everyone who lived in our community that day was somehow affected and many of the emotions from that day may resurface as we near the second year mark. Please take this opportunity to check in on your family members, friends, and neighbors. Support is available at Eagles’ Haven Wellness Center located at 5655 Coral Ridge Drive in Coral Springs. You can contact them at 954-618-0350 or through their website at www.eagleshaven.org. Additional resources can be found on the city website at www.cityofparkland.org. February 14, 2020 will be a “Day of Service and Love” in our community. Public Schools county-wide will have a half day of school and there will be organized activities and service projects at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Pine Trails Park will be open with mental health professionals and limited activities in the afternoon and evening. There will be a display in the park to remember those lives that were taken on February 14, 2018. Around 4:45pm we will have an interfaith ceremony led by various local clergy. Pine Trails Park will remain open until 10pm. Eagles’ Haven will be open from 9am-7pm. Please visit www.cityofparkland. org to see any updates or changes to the schedule for the day and visit https://www.browardschools.com/stonemandouglas for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School updates. This time of year will always remind me of how precious and fleeting life can be, and also how people can, and do, come together to support one another. As a community, we are grateful for all those who have volunteered and continue to volunteer to help others and to those who have worked together to make a difference. We continue to honor the lives we lost and those affected through compassion and action. Please continue to reach out to me if you want to talk about our community and share your concerns and ideas on how we move forward together as a City. Feel free to email me at chunschofsky@ cityofparkland.org. As always, I look forward to hearing from you.

Crime prevention and safety in our community is our top priority so it would go without saying that a CITY WIDE crime watch meeting is right up our alley! What does our Keynote provide you? Everything and anything crime prevention related! Do you have to be a Margate resident? Absolutely not! You may be looking for some important safety tips for your home or business and we want to see you there! This is the best way for all of us to meet and work together to keep our community safe! Our Community Relations Unit hosted the very first city-wide crime prevention meeting last year and it was a great success. Whether you live in a condo, townhome, single family home – whether you rent, own, work, play, or anything in between, there is information to be shared and we have it! This year we will have some entertaining and informative guest speakers as well as our partners from different federal and local agencies. Our goal is to provide you with different crime trends, safety tactics, and samples of technological equipment that will keep your family and home safe and prevent you from becoming a victim of various crimes. So after hearing all of this, will I see you there? For more information, please visit the “Ripple Effect 2” event on our Facebook page, Margate Police Department (@MargateFLPolice) or contact our community relations unit at communityrelationsunit@margatefl.com.

ASK THE SHERIFF
MSD Shooting Anniversary Inspires a Call to Action BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY he senseless mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School two years ago affected the lives of so many. The tragic loss of 17 innocent victims compelled law enforcement, grieving families, community leaders, and everyday citizens to look for lasting solutions to mass violence in our county. Many were determined to get involved to make Broward County a safer place to live, and they did. We’ve come a long way; however, there is more we can do. At the Broward Sheriff’s Office, we take all threats of violence in our schools very seriously. Since launching our Real Time Crime Center in early 2019, we have investigated hundreds of these threats and made more than 50 arrests. In December, BSO arrested three Broward County students who made violent threats against a school. Today, every threat received is presumed to be real, and we take immediate action to investigate each one.

CATERING FOR ALL PARTIES! Education will play an important role in continued change. Together, let’s get a solid message out. I encourage you to teach your students, children, grandchildren, and neighbors that a “joke” about violence is not funny and is never acceptable. Whether it’s a post on social media or a threatening note left in a locker, the outcome can change someone’s life forever. Comments or threats like these are presumed to be a real danger and are punished to the fullest extent of the law. Don’t let someone you know be the next person arrested for this type of “joking” behavior. Let’s be proactive in stopping this unsafe trend and memorialize MSD in a different way – Make Smart Decisions. As a community, let’s continue in our joint efforts to improve public safety to ensure every citizen is safe and feels safe. Think about ways you can get involved and help keep your community crime free. To learn more about programs offered by BSO or ways you can get more involved in your community, visit sheriff.org/NST.
The 17 stars etched in the center of our Real Time Crime Center logo serve as a daily reminder of the importance of its mission. Each star represents a life of those who we lost on February 14, 2018: Alyssa Alhadeff, Martin Duque Anguiano, Scott Beigel, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Christopher Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup and Peter Wang. DINING OUT
Say Hello to Alina Marie BY JOHN BRODIE
D
yan’s Country Kitchen has been a Coral Springs favorite place to meet and eat for over a decade. With the guiding hand of owner Dyan Harpest the restaurant is the recipient of many accolades including several years as the City News and now Our City Magazine “Best Breakfast” Reader’s Choice Award. In their 10th Anniversary year, Dyan’s
won best all-around restaurant. Like other great area businesses this is a real family business and for Dyan that family has recently welcomed the start of a new generation. Dyan’s daughter, Lindsey has been working with her mom since she was 16. After completing her education she came back with a passion for the restaurant business and became manager at Dyan’s in 2015 working beside her mom. On November 3, 2019 Lindsey and her husband Francisco welcomed the birth of their baby girl , Alina Marie , born at Northwest Medical Center with the love and support of Dyan and Bob , sisters Cara and Christie and all the family. Francisco and Lindsey have been together for many years , he was the original deli guy at Dyan’s and now works in IT . Lindsey says it was love at first sight. The two dated for many years traveling and enjoying the adventures of life together. On a trip to NYC, Francisco proposed to Lindsey in Times Square and they made it official and got married on March 14, 2015 at the Harbor Beach Marriott in Fort Lauderdale. Sisters Cara and Christie now also work with Dyan, and her husband Bob is in the Auto industry but also helps out. Lindsey says she loves
her home and raising her new baby Alina and looks forward to seeing everyone again as they take Dyan’s country kitchen into new decades as a true family restaurant and ongoing favorite for everyone in the coral springs area.

Kouyou Buffet Offers a Taste for Every Pallet BY TERRY JAILLET
W
e ate lunch at the recently opened Kouyou Buffet and came away excited to visit again. The food was fresh, plentiful with lots of choices. It is a perfect choice for our family, which includes a vegetarian, a picky 13-year old and two parents with diverse tastes.
THE AMBIANCE The 5800 square foot Asian buffet occupies the space where the Parrot Cove Island Bar & Grill used to be. It is the centerpiece of a revitalized Carolina Springs Plaza on Sample Road in Margate. It is the latest restaurant owned and managed by the You family. After stripping the space down to studs, they spent over a year completely renovating the space. We were greeted warmly as soon as we walked into the door. The space is open, modern and welcoming. Unlike some Asian restaurants, the decoration is not overstated. The various food options stretch along the side of one entire wall of the restaurant and included sushi options, a salad bar, a hibachi grill, traditional hot dishes, and a dessert buffet. We felt right at home, sitting in our booth next to a window. It is obvious that every aspect of this restaurant is brand new.
THE FOOD
The sushi rolls look like works of art. Beautiful, brightly colored and created with obvious care. This is a long way from the typical spicy tuna. The fish lovers in our group loved the Seared Tuna Tataki, Magic Moon Roll, and Tuna Lover’s Roll. The salmon was fresh-tasting and sweet. They also offered some less-common buffet options like white tuna and yellowtail. Low-card dieters will be excited to know that Kouyou offers several rice-free sushi rolls as well. Sushi-lovers could enjoy a wonderful, satisfying meal without ever leaving the sushi area. But, there is much more. In the evenings, the cold bar includes fancier offering like snow crab legs, oysters, peel and eat shrimp and even more sushi options.
“One of the best meals and best values you can find in the area.”-JB
The challenge with any buffet restaurant is balancing choice with quality. Kouyou tackles this challenge by having specialists in each area. The sushi bar is managed by a master sushi chef, while the hibachi is attended by an executive chef ready to cook to order. We found all of the items fresh and well-stocked.
SUSHI If you enjoy sushi and have a big appetite, this may be the best restaurant in the area. They offer a great variety of rolls, nigiri and sashimi options.
HIBACHI The Hibachi offers steak, chicken & shrimp, expect from Chinese and Thai cuisine. They along with a variety of traditional vegetables and include all of our favorites like Szechuan beef, tofu. They even offer some unusual items like corn Kung Pao chicking, and Thai coconut shrimp. The on the cob. The chef made my teriyaki chicken with dumplings were fresh, which is a tricky thing at a care. It was perfectly seasoned and not too sweet. buffet! The salad bar offered a vast choice of vegThe hot food selections are what you would etables, fruits, and dressings. They even offer pizza and fries for families with picky kids.
THE VERDICT Buffet restaurants offer all-you-can-eat quantities and a broad selection of choices. Good buffets offer those choices with a focus on cleanliness and freshness. Great buffets add expensive, sought-after items like snow crab legs, oysters or filet mignon. Based on these criteria, The Kouyou Buffet is a great restaurant. They have a huge variety of tasty food. Our only problem during our visit was overeating.
