We Are All Eagles Now

F

ebruary 14, 2018, is a date that will forever be etched in all our minds, just like 9-11. It is virtually impossible to come across a person in the community who wasn’t personally impacted by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Seventeen innocent people – 14 students along with three faculty members – lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. Fifteen additional people were wounded. It is hard for anyone to reconcile what happened with any sense of normalcy or justice. There are many questions still unanswered: How could someone become filled with such hate and rage? Why do we allow teenagers to easily purchase assault weapons? How can we keep our children safe? What keeps us going, however, is what we’ve heard from the friends and family of the victims: we, as a community, are better off having known them. They were coaches who rushed to the aid of defenseless students; seniors with aspirations for higher education; freshman just beginning to discover who they are; athletes; band members; and, most importantly, they were fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and friends. As we slowly start to piece together our new normal, let us never forget the 17 innocent lives lost, along with the thousands of survivors who will forever bear both physical and emotional scars from that fateful day. In the hours and days following the attack, our community rallied together. Now that the days have turned to weeks, we must continue to band together and show our support to the Parkland community. The Eagles will soar once more.

IT'S THEIR BUSINESS

Varicose Veins? Might be More than Meets the Eye BY JOHN BRODIE

S

offer Vein and Vascular, a division of the Soffer Health Institute, specializes in treatment for varicose and spider veins. Dr Ariel Soffer is a Nationally Recognized Vein Expert and board certified Cardiovascular Specialist. If you experience restless legs, numbness, tingling, cramping, burning, swelling or an achy feeling in your legs the Soffer vein experts can help. It is quite common for these symptoms to develop as men and women age. Besides the discomfort it can make you want to hide your legs as spider veins and varicose veins become very visible. Lymphdema (a condition that occurs when the network of vessels, veins and arteries that circulate fluids through is not functioning properly) will cause swelling and damage to the skin. Fortunately these conditions are all

treatable. For many years people have had to go to Soffer’s facility in Miami for treatment but Soffer Vein and Vascular now has a locationsin Deerfield Beach, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Aventura, North Miami Beach and Hialeah/Miami Lakes. Dr. Soffer is a clear leader in his field. For several years he was featured in the ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion.” Adam Kustin, a company spokesperson commented, “In this field, he is as good as it gets, yet the man is so kind, so warm and so approachable, it has spawned the growth of this practice. You want the best,” said Kustin. “Two people can walk in with the same bulging vein issue, but there’s no way to tell if either has any real underlying health issues. It’s more than just cosmetic.” This is why it is so important to see someone with the appropriate expertise and not someone merely offering a cosmetic fix. “Sometimes people aren’t bothered by the bulging vein but they experience achy, very tired legs, numbness or restless legs and they never associate these “symptoms” with varicose veins. That’s why seeing a doctor as qualified as Dr. Soffer and his staff becomes so vital.” Treatment is usually simple. “And painfree,” Adam added. “Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. The new lasers are very low risk, super accurate and extremely effective. We can also inject saline. It depends on the severity.” Adam continued stating that Dr. Soffer “wants to help people prevent these life-threatening issues BEFORE they take a toll. Before they compromise how a patient lives life. He SEES people pain free,

enjoying life again who didn’t even know it was possible for them. They never connected the dots, he does.” If you are experiencing any pain or swelling in your legs or want to get back more youthful looking beautiful legs, Soffer’s signature minimally invasive vein treatments are a great solution. Soffer Vein and Vascular with six locations will provide a Complimentary vein screening available by appointment only for new patients 18 and older. Patients can discuss their concerns with the Soffer medical staff and review their best options for treatment. There is no obligation to pursue treatment. Most insurances are accepted. Dr. Soffer plans to open a Weston location next. Members of his staff speak Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese.

Area Educators Receive Top Honors at Broward Schools’ Caliber Awards BY TERRY JAILLET

M

onarch High School English teacher Tammy Freeman was recognized as the Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Teacher of the Year at the 2018 Caliber Awards on February 1st. More than 1,300 guests watched Freeman accept the award at the Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. The Teacher of the Year Award is perhaps the highest honor a Broward County educator can receive. More than 550 teachers were nominated. Freeman was selected from a list of 16 finalists. She was praised for earning the respect and admiration of both her students and colleagues. An English teacher, who also serves as chair of the Language Arts Department, Freeman has shown outstanding ability as both collaborator and leader. She was previously named Monarch High School Teacher of the Year, in recognition of her efforts in challenging and encouraging young learners to grow as critical thinkers. “I empower my students by not only instilling skills that will help them become successful in life, but by helping them see how important their voice truly is,” Freeman said. She was able to drive home from the awards ceremony in style courtesy of a Toyota of North Miami. This year’s Teacher of the Year Award comes with a costfree three-year lease on an all-new 2018 Camry SE. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Assistant Principal Winfred Porter, Jr. received Assistant Principal of the Year honors as well. His ability to connect with

students was highlighted during the presentation. “Building relationships with students is like opening a checking account. When it comes time to make a withdrawal, you must have something in the bank,” he said. “As an administrator, there are many opportunities to make withdrawals through discipline and corrective interactions, but I have made it a priority to make as many deposits of encouraging words and positive interactions, to ensure a productive understanding is developed. At the end of the day, students respect me for being consistent with them.” This year’s Principal of the Year was Michelle Kefford from Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines.

Coral Springs High Senior Selected to Attend U.S. Senate Youth Program BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tephen Marante aspires to a career in public service. The Coral Springs High School senior is well on his way, as a delegate to the United States Senate Youth Program. The event takes place March 3-10th in Washington, D.C. Stephen was selected from the state’s top student leaders to be one of two students to represent Florida as part of a 104-student delegation – two from each state, plus the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education Academy. “To represent the entire State of Florida is an honor I do not take lightly,” states Stephen. “Being chosen for the U.S. Senate Youth Program is very exciting. It is definitely one of the biggest accomplishments I have achieved in high school.” And Stephen has amassed quite a list of accomplishments. He was class president for three years and says the only reason he did not run for office for a fourth term was because he was named Student Advisor to the Broward County School Board. Stephen is also an executive board member for the Broward County Association of School Councils. He is a member of Representative Ted Deutsch’s Congressional Youth Cabinet and is a member of the City of Coral Springs Teen Political Forum. Stephen is also involved with speech and debate as well as the Miracle Network Dance Marathon, where he helped raise over $10,000 for Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami. The U.S. Senate Youth Program is an extremely competitive merit-based program. Stephen and the other delegates were chosen for their outstanding leadership abilities and strong commitment to volunteer work. In addition, each is academically talented and ranks in the top one percent of high school juniors and seniors in their state. While in Washington, D.C., the students will take part in an intensive week-

long study of the federal government and the people who lead it. The delegates will attend meetings and briefings with senators, members of the House of Representatives, congressional staff, a Supreme Court Justice, leaders of the cabinet agencies, an ambassador to the United States, and senior members of the national media. The students will also tour many of the national monuments and museums. Stephen says he is most excited about meeting President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in the White House. “It’s a cool opportunity to see Washington behind the scenes in a way most Americans won’t ever get.” Stephen Marante In addition to this once in a lifetime experience, Stephen will also receive a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate study provided by The Hearst Foundation. Stephen plans to attend Florida State University next year, where he will study political science. His long-term plans include law school and then, hopefully, a career in politics or public service.

SPRING BREAK ACTIVITY GUIDE

S

pring Break is just around the corner. Many people, from around the country, will soon visit the beautiful beaches of South Florida. Here are some spring break activity ideas for those of us already lucky enough to live here.

Spring Break Day Camp

There are camps and activities for almost any interest. Whether your little one aspires to be the next David Beckham, the next Picasso or the next Gloria Estefan, there is likely a camp or activity right around the corner! Look over the next few pages to find information about areas camps that might interest your child.

Everglades Airboat Ride

Spring Break Ideas for Families Not Traveling

Give the kids the thrill of a lifetime while riding on an airboat through the untouched landscape of the Everglades. You will get to see some of Florida’s most exotic wild life including, of course the American Alligator. For more info contact Everglades Holliday Park at 954-434-8111 choose from multi-star resorts like the Margaritaville Beach Resort or find something a bit less expensive off the coast. Mid-week overnight prices won’t kill the budget either!

Check Out a Museum There are plenty of museum options to choose from in the area. Kids of all ages love the Museum of Discovery & Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection is a fascinating place to see many of the cars made famous in Hollywood films as well as some of the rarest Ferraris and Porsches the world over. Or, your family could check out marine life at the Miami Seaquarium. The opportunities are almost endless and, in many cases, just a short drive away.

Fishing

There are bodies of water almost everywhere you go in South Florida. Almost all of them contain wildlife. There are few better ways to teach the benefits of perseverance and patients than dipping

Video Game Olympics

The Beach

Video games aren’t just for kids! There are tons of entertaining video games that families can play together. Our family likes to buy some movie candy, pop some popcorn and go at it. Favorites for family time on the Xbox or PS4 include sing-along games like American Idol, Sports contest like the Madden football franchise or even Dance Revolution.

Staycation at a local Hotel One of the most exciting parts of traveling is staying in a new place, especially for kids. One thing South Florida has an abundance of is great hotels. Families that don’t have the time or finances to travel during Spring Break can get most of the benefits while staying close to home. Families can 24 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM 26 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYAVENTURA.COM

hooks into the water and waiting for a bite. Many Broward County Parks allow and encourage fishing. Be sure to have the appropriate licenses. For more info on fishing licenses check out www.myfwc.com.

What better thing is there to do in South Florida when the kids are off school than go to the beach? There is certainly something for everyone: Hollywood Beach’s 1920s-style oceanfront promenade Broadwalk will appeal the nostalgic; Laid-back Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a great place to spend the day eating ice cream, reading a book and enjoying a less-busy existence; Pompano Beach offers terrific shopping and dining; the kids could watch mighty cruise ships set sail at Fort Lauderdale Beach; or, families can get away from it all at the John U. Lloyd Beach Sate Park. If you can’t get away, be sure to make this Spring Break one the remember anyway.

Broward Health Coral Springs Welcomes New CEO and Auxiliary Board BY STACEY BOMSER

B

roward Health is pleased to announce Jared M. Smith, CPA, has been named chief executive officer of Broward Health Coral Springs. In this role, Smith is responsible for leading hospital operations as well as working closely with the management team and medical staff to expand service and provide high-quality patient care at the 200-bed community hospital. Broward Health President and CEO Beverly Capasso says she is confident Smith will provide strong leadership to support continued growth at Broward Health Coral Springs. “He is a visionary and decisive leader with a proven track record of success in high-performing healthcare organizations.” Smith brings with him more than 23 years of extensive hospital operations experience. Prior to joining Broward Health, he was a leader within the Tenet Healthcare organization where he served as the national service line administrator for cardiac and vascular services. Before that, Smith was chief operating officer of Delray Medical Center, where he led day-to-day operations and was responsible for implementing nearly $100 million of major program development initiatives. He also led the efforts of Tenet’s first proton center in BHCS COO Michael Leopold with auxiliary board Palm Beach and chaired the members Judy Shutowick, Risha Niziol, Lucrecia COO group of the coastal diviMichalopolous, and Claire W. Bojanoski.

sion, comprised of 17 hospitals. In addition to welcoming a new CEO, Broward Health Coral Springs also recently installed six new members to its Auxiliary Board. The 2018 board members are President Claire Bojanoski, Vice President and Assistant Treasurer Anita Greenberg, Vice President of the Volunteer Office CEO Jared M. Smith, CPA Lucrecia Michalopolous, Vice President of Ways and Means Janet Groman, Parliamentarian and Recording Secretary Judy Shutowick, and Treasurer Risha Niziol. They were inducted during the 31st board installation ceremony, which took place during the Auxiliary’s holiday party. The Auxiliary is a group of dedicated volunteers who have pledged to work in conjunction with the general membership, executive committee and board of directors in support of Broward Health Coral Springs. “Our patients benefit from their generous financial donations and our staff benefit from their volunteer hours, allowing clinicians to dedicate more time to care for our patients,” shared Michael Leopold, chief operation officer of Broward Health Coral Springs, adding that the volunteers’ human touch cannot be quantified as they provide everything from directions to a patient who is lost to sharing smiles and light-hearted moments with nurses. Broward Health Coral Springs has been providing comprehensive general medical and surgical services since 1987. Featuring more than 50 medical specialties, it is a leader in addressing the health and medical needs of the northwest Broward community. hree JROTC students, who were killed at Stoneman Douglas Highschool, have posthumously been awarded the Army Medal of Heroism, the highest achievement possible for a cadet. Alaina Petty, 14, Martin Duque, 14 and Peter Wang, 15, received the medal in recognition of their heroic actions during the shooting. Alaina’s father, Ryan Petty, signaled out her sense of justice as what set her apart from peers, “You could not escape her innate sense right and wrong, but you never felt that she was judging you,” he said. “She just wanted to be your friend.” Martin, the son of Mexican immigrants, joined JROTC shortly after enrolling in Stoneman Douglas. “He was sweet and caring and loved by all Martin Duque of his family,” noted his brother. In an extremely rare gesture, the United State Military Academy posthumously admitted Peter to the Class of 2025. The appointment fulfilled a lifelong goal for him. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Obstructive Sleep Apnea BY DR. LAL BHAGCHANDANI

O

bstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder. If you have OSA, it means that your airways collapse part or all of the way while you are sleeping. Muscles of upper airway relax when you fall asleep. If you sleep on your back, gravity can cause tongue to fall back. This narrows the airway and can reduce the amount of air getting in the lungs. Narrowed airways causes snoring by making tissue in the back of throat vibrate. Apnea is when the airway is completely closed, and so breathing temporarily stops. The airway can collapse repeatedly during the night. Air cannot get in to your lungs, resulting in lack of oxygen. You wake up so you can start breathing again. Frequent awakenings at night can cause sleepiness during the day. Lack of oxygen and frequent nighttime awakenings have negative consequences for your health. Signs of obstructive sleep apnea include. 1. Loud or frequent snoring. 2. Choking or gasping while you sleep. 3. Morning headaches. 4. Daytime sleepiness or tiredness. 5. Trouble concentrating. March Update SKIP CAMPBELL, MAYOR he City of Coral Springs is heartbroken over the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that occurred on February 14, 2018. Many of our own residents attend Douglas and we are mourning with them. This kind of loss is unimaginable and something we never, ever thought would happen in our neighboring city of Parkland. On behalf of the City of Coral Springs, I want to thank our law enforcement and first responders who assisted on scene, Broward Sheriff’s Office, Broward Health and everyone who helped in this moment of crisis. This tragedy has brought our communities closer than ever and united we stand with Marjory Stoneman Douglas. This tragic event has put a spotlight on the vulnerabilities that we - as a community - must come together to address. The City will work tirelessly with our partners at the School Board and in our neighboring cities. Those partnerships, paired with the strength and commitment of our community, will help bring about the changes that need to be made.

Margate Welcomes Spring With a Host of Activities CITY OF MARGATE MAYOR ARLENE R. SCHWARTZ Start the month off by joining us at our Sounds at Sundown concert series Saturday March 3, from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. hosted by the Margate CRA and the Parks and Recreation Department. Enjoy great entertainment and culinary treats served by your favorite food truck. It’s time to do your spring cleaning, so why not clear out your garage, gather clothes you haven’t worn in a while, de-clutter your home and turn all of that unwanted “stuff” into cash. The City’s annual Spring Clean Up and Garage Sale is Saturday, March 17th from 7 a.m. until noon at Oriole Park, located at 7055 NW 1st Street. Preregistration is required for vendors at a price of $10 for residents and $20 for non-residents per space. On Saturday, March 24th, children eight years old and younger are invited to the City of Margate’s Springtime Egg Hunt. The festivities begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Margate Sports Complex, 1695 Banks Road. Nearly 9,000 brightly colored plastic eggs - each containing a treat will be scattered on three baseball fields. Peter Rabbit will be making an appearance for family photographs. Arrive early! Bring your baskets and a camera. This event is free open to the public. Hang out, relax or splash around in the lap pool while watching the 2017 animated movie, Coco. Dive in Movie is Saturday, March 24th from 7 to 10 p.m. at Calypso Cove, 6200 Royal Palm Boulevard. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available for purchase. Admission for residents is $2/person ages 4 and older, $1 for children 3 and under. Make a splash at the City’s water park, Calypso Cove! Beginning March 17th, the park will open on weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. During Spring Break, March 26th – 30th, the water park will open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information about any of these Parks and Rec activities, go to margatefl.com or call (954) 972-6458.

7th Annual Academic Scholarship Program

The City of Margate, in partnership with Waste Management, presents the 7th Annual Margate Academic Scholarship Program for high school students who live within the City limits. This scholarship honors one male and one female student for their academic excellence and helps them achieve their dreams of attending college with less financial burden. Graduating high school students should apply for this one-time $2,500 scholarship by Thursday, May 24th. Download the application at margatefl. com/scholarship. Congratulations to the Margate Police Department, the recipient of a $500,000 COPS Hiring Program grant awarded by the US Department of Justice. Of the 179 grants awarded nationally, 15 were awarded to Florida and only one to Broward County. Margate proudly received the check from US Congressmen Ted Deutch. The award, matched by the City, will allow the Police Department to hire four additional law enforcement officers ensuring that Margate remains one of the safest cities in Florida as ranked by SafeHome. Wishing you joy as you celebrate the Easter and Passover holidays, Arlene R. Schwartz, Mayor City of Margate

LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Appeal Process

BY EVAN BARON

O

ne of the most misunderstood aspects of the law is the Appeal. Everyone has heard the term, but most people don’t really understand what the process entails. Although everyone technically has the right to appeal a lower court’s decision, only under limited circumstances will the filing of an appeal be successful. Appeals in Florida are filed with the District Courts of Appeal. There are five District Courts of Appeal, which cover the entire state. In Broward County appeals are filed in the 4th District Court of Appeal which is physically located in Palm Beach County. Cases that are appealed in Miami Dade County would be appealed to the 3rd District Court of Appeal, which is located in Miami Dade County. There are certain deadlines which must be followed in order to file an appeal. An appeal must be filed within 30 days of the date that a final order is signed by the Court. I sometimes get individuals who call me to inquire about an appeal from an order signed six months before. Unfortunately, I must inform that they missed the deadline and so the order in question has now become final. Except under limited circumstances only final orders can be appealed. If a judge rules unfavorably in a matter during a hearing, that ruling cannot usually be appealed until a final order is signed.

An appeal is not a re-trial of the case. An appeal does not require witnesses to come to court and give testimony all over again. It is not a “DO OVER.” In an appeal you are asking a three-judge panel to review the lower courts decisions to determine if there were any errors of law. If a judge does not allow certain testimony or evidence to be introduced into a trial, that may be an error of law and can be appealed. If a judge listens to testimony and does not believe a witness, that is a matter of credibility and cannot be appealed. As you can see, the process is very technical in nature. Only issues which are preserved can be appealed. If in a divorce the couple voluntarily enters into a Marital Settlement Agreement, neither one can subsequently file an appeal, since an Agreement was reached. Such an agreement is binding upon the parties. If, however, the parties do not reach an Agreement, and a Judge issues a Final Judgment, either party may file an appeal and question the Court’s ruling. Statistics show that only a very small percentage of appeals are in fact granted. In most instances, if an appeal is granted; the case is sent back to the trial court for further proceedings; consistent with the Appellate Court’s ruling. There generally is no time limit for an Appellate Court to decide and waiting 12 months for a decision is not all that unusual. I strongly suggest that if you are considering an appeal, make sure you are within your 30-day window and hire an experienced attorney. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Heel Pain In Children BY DR. CARLO MESSINA

D

oes your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. This occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children.

Cause: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

Growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel Over-activity in children commonly between the ages of 8 and 14 Tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscle Flatfeet Poor shoe gear or walking barefoot Growth spurts

Symptoms: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

Discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity Occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle Stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running Pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity Pain is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity, sits for a period of time, and then tries to get up and walk

Signs: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

Tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel Walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground Discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel Limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens

Treatment: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

▸▸

Modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot Rest and ice Stretching exercises Proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel Night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament Taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone Custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment Occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing Physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate

True or false. Symptoms of colon polyps include blood in the stool and loose stools.

It’s a leading cause cancer-related death in the United States. But what do you really know about colon cancer? Cleveland Clinic Florida gastroenterologist, Nicole Palekar, MD, sees Nicole Palekar, MD patients at the Weston-main campus and will soon be accepting patients at the new Coral Springs location opening this summer. Here, she shares information about the disease in this true or false quiz.

3

True or false. Having a colonoscopy can prevent colon cancer. True. You can help avoid colon cancer just by getting screened. “One of the reasons that colon cancer is so preventable is that we can remove precancerous polyps found during a colonoscopy – before they turn into cancer,” says Dr. Palekar.

False. According to the American Cancer Society, colon polyps often don’t cause any symptoms – at least in their early stages. Screening is important because you may have polyps and not know it. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends regular colon cancer screenings for everyone age 50 and older, age 45 or older if African-American. Your doctor may recommend earlier screenings if you have a family history or other high risk of colon polyps or cancer. To make an appointment with Dr. Palekar in Weston or Coral Springs or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida digestive specialist, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/coloncancer.
