Varicose Veins? Might be More than Meets the Eye BY JOHN BRODIE
S
offer Vein and Vascular, a division of the Soffer Health Institute, specializes in treatment for varicose and spider veins. Dr Ariel Soffer is a Nationally Recognized Vein Expert and board certified Cardiovascular Specialist. If you experience restless legs, numbness, tingling, cramping, burning, swelling or an achy feeling in your legs the Soffer vein experts can help. It is quite common for these symptoms to develop as men and women age. Besides the discomfort it can make you want to hide your legs as spider veins and varicose veins become very visible. Lymphdema (a condition that occurs when the network of vessels, veins and arteries that circulate fluids through is not functioning properly) will cause swelling and damage to the skin. Fortunately these conditions are all

treatable. For many years people have had to go to Soffer’s facility in Miami for treatment but Soffer Vein and Vascular now has a locationsin Deerfield Beach, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Aventura, North Miami Beach and Hialeah/Miami Lakes. Dr. Soffer is a clear leader in his field. For several years he was featured in the ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion.” Adam Kustin, a company spokesperson commented, “In this field, he is as good as it gets, yet the man is so kind, so warm and so approachable, it has spawned the growth of this practice. You want the best,” said Kustin. “Two people can walk in with the same bulging vein issue, but there’s no way to tell if either has any real underlying health issues. It’s more than just cosmetic.” This is why it is so important to see someone with the appropriate expertise and not someone merely offering a cosmetic fix. “Sometimes people aren’t bothered by the bulging vein but they experience achy, very tired legs, numbness or restless legs and they never associate these “symptoms” with varicose veins. That’s why seeing a doctor as qualified as Dr. Soffer and his staff becomes so vital.” Treatment is usually simple. “And painfree,” Adam added. “Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. The new lasers are very low risk, super accurate and extremely effective. We can also inject saline. It depends on the severity.” Adam continued stating that Dr. Soffer “wants to help people prevent these life-threatening issues BEFORE they take a toll. Before they compromise how a patient lives life. He SEES people pain free,
enjoying life again who didn’t even know it was possible for them. They never connected the dots, he does.” If you are experiencing any pain or swelling in your legs or want to get back more youthful looking beautiful legs, Soffer’s signature minimally invasive vein treatments are a great solution. Soffer Vein and Vascular with six locations will provide a Complimentary vein screening available by appointment only for new patients 18 and older. Patients can discuss their concerns with the Soffer medical staff and review their best options for treatment. There is no obligation to pursue treatment. Most insurances are accepted. Dr. Soffer plans to open a Weston location next. Members of his staff speak Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese.

n 2012, a 7th grade Plantation student, Tiernan Ramer, started her own charity project “Tiernan’s Soles Shoe Drive”. Fast forward six years and the ambitious teen reached her goal of collecting 6,000 pairs of shoes. These shoes are brought to “In Jacob’s Shoes”. The local 501(c)(3) public charity, created in loving memory of Jacob S. Zweig, provides shoes, backpacks, school supplies and athletic gear to South Florida children in need. During this time Tiernan won the “Mattel Top 5 Young Philanthropists” in the United States award. As a result, “In Jacob’s Shoes” received a donation
of $1000 in her name. During her Sophomore year of high school, she was awarded the “Jacob S. Zweig Excellence in Service Award”, and in her Junior year the “Freedom’s Foundation National George Washington Award” for her continued efforts. Tiernan is now graduating from South Plantation High School and will put her focus on college where she will study law, social work or education to continue serving those less fortunate. early 2,000 men, women & children laced up their sneakers and got PINKED out sporting their pink attire – including tutus – at the 13th Annual Race for Women’s Wellness—all in the name of breast cancer. The half marathon & 5K was presented by the City of Coral Springs and Broward Health Coral Springs with proceeds benefitting the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund. This fun-filled morning included a post-race party( decked out in pink) with food, live entertainment, and an awards presentation Funds raised go directly to the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund which provides free mammograms to women in our community who financially can’t afford them. The fund has screened more than 2,000 women. These women are still alive today through the additional services they received within the Broward Health system. The event was attended by a mix of men, women and children. Some were running enthusiasts who flew in from other parts of the country. Most runners were local and ran in honor or in memory of a loved-one. Some runners are battling breast cancer or are survivors.

“Raising and donating money is the goal of 3 Heart Strings. Donating to MSD victims and their families, this will include all 17 and all of the injured, is the way to give back to our community during this awful tragedy,” said the students. 3 Heart Strings began in 2015 when three friends, Hanna, Stacey and Sofia wanted to start a charitable organization and help others in need. Broward County Selects The Police Foundation to Review Actions Following Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Tragedy
O
ngoing concerns regarding the Broward Sheriff’s Office’s response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have led The Broward County Commission to request a thorough review. The county selected The Police Foundation to lead an independent review and to create an After-Action Report (AAR) on the February 14th shooting. The Police Foundation was tasked with identifying and reviewing all relevant information about the event. It will conduct interviews, as necessary, to complete an
assessment and provide the After Action Report to the County. The goal of the effort is to identify strengths, successes as well as opportunities for improvement. The Police Foundation was created in 1970 and is the oldest nationally known independent, nonprofit, non-partisan, and non-membership driven organization dedicated to advancing policing through innovation and science. It recently conducted and concluded the After-Action Report into the police response to the Pulse Nightclub mass shooting in the City of Orlando and is now looking into the Fire Rescue response at the City’s request. The City of Orlando highly recommended the group. The Police Foundation’s team will be comprised of subject matter experts in
the field of public safety response to critical incidents, psychology of school shooters, school safety, security and emergency preparedness. Most notably, the team will include the retired Police Chief best known for managing the aftermath of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. “Of the three companies submitting proposals, Ms. Henry and staff concluded the Police Foundation was the best choice to deliver a comprehensive, factbased and unbiased After-Action Report, conducted in a thorough and deliberate manner,” said Assistant County Administrator Alphonso Jefferson. “We expect the assessment to begin later this month and take between 3 to 6 months to complete, with interim reports issued throughout the process.” Affected member of the community are encouraged to participate in the review. For more information on the Police foundation visit www.policefoundation.com.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Why Do Young Families Need a Revocable Trust? BY ALAN J. REINFELD, ESQ.
I
n today’s society, it is important to plan for the future of your family. Every day, tragedy happens, from car accidents to people being diagnosed with cancer. It is important that there are plans to take care of your family in case the unexpected happens. Take me for example: my mother passed away from cancer in about four weeks, but because we had a trust I was able to focus more on her and healing then on the financial matters. A revocable trust is a legal document that creates a plan of distribution of a person’s assets. A person sets up a revocable trust, i.e., a “living trust,” during his or her lifetime, which becomes irrevocable upon their death. This means that the person has the power to amend or revoke the trust only during his or her lifetime. During the person’s life, the beneficiaries may include the person him/herself, his or her spouse, children or other close relatives. Once the person passes away, the property that is titled to the trust is distributed pursuant to the terms of the trust.
32 MAY 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
What are the benefits of having a revocable trust? ▸▸ Quick transfer of assets. A properly drafted revocable trust can help the decedent’s family avoid the time-consuming probate process. The person must re-title his or her assets into the trust; this is called “funding” the trust. If assets are not transferred to the trust prior to the person’s death, the only way to transfer any assets to the trust will be through probate. ▸▸ Avoid Probate. At a minimum, probate administration will take over six months. The administration usually costs a minimum of $500 and many times can cost more based on the complexity. There may be other fees and costs associated with administration.
▸▸ Privacy. A revocable trust is a private document that does not require filing with the court. A will, however, is a public document that must be deposited with the court after the decedent’s death. ▸▸ Trust assets are not subject to creditors. Assets properly put into a revocable trust are not subject to most creditors. When a probate administration is opened, creditors may try to claim the money owed to them by filing a claim on the probate assets. ▸▸ Focus on mourning. Avoiding probate and quickly wrapping up the affairs of the deceased helps focus on mourning rather than probate administration. ▸▸ Name a person who will handle your affairs. A revocable trust along with a proper will allows a person to designate who will handle their affairs once they pass away. ▸▸ Reduction of estate taxes. While a trust is not a tax savings tool, there may be some provisions included in the trust that allows you to transfer your wealth by establishing a credit shelter trust in the event of death.

Cities to Hold Memorial Day Ceremonies BY NICOL JENKINS
J
oin your community in remembering veterans and their families who give so that we may enjoy the freedoms we have today. The City of Coral Springs, with support of the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, will host a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 28 at 9 am at Veterans Park, located at 8601 Royal Palm Blvd. Coral Springs. At the Ceremony, the Civil Air Patrol will be in attendance, there will be a salute, and then the Clergy will provide an Invocation. That is followed by introductions of the Coral Springs Mayor and City Commission members and then guest speeches. The ceremony will conclude with a Benediction by the Clergy. “The Memorial Day Ceremony will pay tribute to and honor those service members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for the many freedoms we all enjoy. We must never forget them,” said Alan Paley, Treasurer for the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs and State Commander for the Jewish War Veterans. The mission of the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs is to help Veterans and their families. They can help veterans with issues concerning the City, or with navigation through the VA, or help them with a VA Claim. They were established to be a link between the veteran community and the City. The Coalition plans both the Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day programs for the City, as well as the Flag Day Ceremony held on June 14th. The Veterans Memorial Brick Program was conceived as a way to honor members of the Armed Forces, both living and dead. Anyone who has lost a loved one should consider purchasing a brick in their honor. If your loved ones are buried elsewhere, this is a great way to have a part of them memorialized locally. For more information, visit https://www.coralsprings.org/ government/other-departments-and-services/ parks-and-recreation/veterans-brick-program. The City of Parkland will also host a Memorial Day Ceremony. Parkland residents are invited to attend the Ceremony on Wednesday, May 23 from 6:30 pm to 7 pm at the Parkland Library, located at 6620 N. University Drive, Parkland. Parkland Library will mark this coming day of observance with a presentation of colors by Westglades Middle School JROTC, and a performance of taps and The Star-Spangled Banner by an ensemble from Westglades Band. Harpist Darlene Weingarten, a member of the South Florida Chapter of the American Harp Society, will then provide beautiful background music as attendees write notes or create coloring pages to add to a memorial message board, if they wish. “The City of Parkland wants to provide the opportunity for residents to gather and remember those who have lost their lives serving our country,” said Michele Andrews, Program Specialist at the 34 MAY 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Coral Springs Update SKIP CAMPBELL, MAYOR f you are following the news, you know that many cities are at work to challenge a Florida Statute that imposes a super preexemption on local lawmakers considering gun regulation. Florida Statute 790.33 restricts the actions of local officials by threatening a $5,000 fine and removal from office, and threatens cities with up to $100,000 in legal damages. I am pleased to report that the Coral Springs City Commission has authorized the filing of a lawsuit to challenge the super preexemption imposed by the Statute. There has been other progress in the area of gun regulation. One month following the February 14 shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Doulas, Governor Rick Scott signed SB 7026 into law, which bans the sale of any firearms in Florida to anyone under the age of 21, imposes a three-day waiting period on all handgun purchases and bans bump stocks. I will continue to keep you updated.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
A Message from the Chief CLYDE PARRY CHIEF OF POLICE, CITY OF CORAL SPRINGS
I
am extremely proud to serve as the Chief of the Police and lead the dedicated men and women who make up the Coral Springs Police Department. Our department is comprised of 216 sworn officers and 100 civilian employees. Our department members are dedicated to serving the citizens of Coral Springs with the highest level of professional and ethical standards. I began as Chief of Police on March 5, 2018, after Chief Pustizzi retired. Like all of you, I am horrified by the senseless display of evil that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School two weeks earlier on February 14, 2018. This event has forever changed the fabric of our community, and I am certain that none of us will ever be the same. I am extremely proud of our department’s response to this tragedy, as well as the response of our other law enforcement partners from a myriad of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. They all rushed to our side in our time of need. I am also humbled by the tremendous outpouring of support and goodwill provided to our department by citizens and community groups, both in our community and throughout our great nation. Their heartfelt acts proved to me that people are good. They also provided a badly needed counter balance to the evil witnessed by this community. As your chief, I am committed to providing the best police service to our citizens. I am vested in this community. I raised my family here, coached youth sports here and resided in Coral Springs for over twenty years. I truly want Coral Springs to be the best place to live and raise a family. That starts with public safety. I would ask all of our citizens to join me to help make Coral Springs the safest city in South Florida. One of my top priorities is to foster working relationships with our citizens to resolve quality of life and crime issues. Partnerships between the police department and the community we serve is paramount to achieving our shared goals. Several years ago, the Coral Springs Police Department began our “Make a Call, Make a Difference” crime prevention program. We asked residents to call our non-emergency number (954) 344-1800, any time they saw someone or something suspicious. This award-winning program has helped us reduce crime and has led to the apprehension of suspects in the process of committing crimes. This initiative, along with numerous other crime prevention programs, continues to make the City of Coral Springs one of the safest places to live, work and raise a family. Coral Springs is very fortunate to be one of two cities in Broward County with its own 911 Communications Center. Police communication has changed dramatically over the last decade and our citizens clearly benefit from maintaining our own center. While I always remind residents to call 9-1-1 or (954) 344-1800 for immediate police response, I encourage you to stay connected with our department through Facebook, Twitter (@CoralSpringsPolice) and NextDoor.com. These media platforms allow you to learn about crime trends, upcoming events, road closures and other information affecting our community. I take tremendous pride in the quality of law enforcement services provided by the members of the Coral Springs Police Department, and I look forward to honorably serving as Chief of Police. Clyde Parry Chief of Police City of Coral Springs

Guido and Etika Parente visited their ancestors’ country of Italy this past summer. They started their journey in Benevento, and then made their way to Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, and Como. Their visit had many stops at iconic destinations including the Colosseum. Not only did they bring their grandson Guido Alexander on the trip for his graduation gift, they also brought Our City to always have a little piece of home with them.

I Wanna Rock! – Rockfest Concerts Breathes Life into the Miramar Amphitheater with Multi-Year Concert Series BY TERRY JAILLET
R
ockfest Concerts, the renowned promoter of the Rockfest 80s Music Festivals, has signed an exclusive agreement to promote events at the Miramar Amphitheater. Led by music veteran Roy Anthony, Rockfest Concerts has been putting on shows throughout South Florida for over a decade. The group is best known for its retro 80s events featuring legendary rockers like Dokken, 38 Special and Joan Jett. The new concert series, however, isn’t just for head bangers. In fact, the first three events will

feature Latin music and Hip-Hop. “We are so excited to tap into the diversity of South Florida,” said Anthony, “We want to put on shows for all types of people and music.” All the events will be held at the Miramar Amphitheater at Miramar Regional Park. The venue, which has 3,000 covered seats and room for 2,000 more on the lawn, is a perfect fit for the types of events Rockfest envisions. Concertgoers will get the benefits they’ve come to expect at major venues, like VIP sections and multiple food and beverage options, while also enjoying a much more intimate concert experience. The first two events planned are the Festival Cinco de Mayo on May 5th and the Godfather’s of Hip Hop on May 18th. Festival Cinco de Mayo The First concert in the series will celebrate Mexican Independence Day with music from all over Latin America. The headliner is Mexican Grammynominated artist Paquita La Del Barrio. Known for giving it to “Macho” men in the crowd while belting out regional favorites, Barrio is a true entertainer. Paquita will be joined by sexy Columbian salsa and tropical diva Carolina La O as well as special guest KerreKe.
The Godfathers of Hip-Hop The second event hosted by Rockfest will be The Godfathers of Hip Hop, featuring many of the names who put Hip-Hop on the map. Doug E. Fresh and Naughty by Nature top the line up of 80s and 90s superstars. The crowd is sure to get down to Doug E Fresh’s The Show or Naughty by Nature’s party anthems O.P.P and Hip-Hop Hooray. But, the real treat of the night will be the when Eric B. and Rakim unite for the first time in 20 years. The duo’s seminal track, Paid in Full, is considered by many music critics as one of the top hip-hop songs ever produced. To hear it live for the first time in two decades is sure to be a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity. Rockfest is already promoting several more events at the Amphitheater this summer with many more in the works. Mark your calendar for the Latin Spring Festival on June 15th, Loudwire’s GenX Summer on July 3rd and the annual two-day Rockfest 80’s event scheduled for November 10th and 11th. Rockfest Concerts’ goal is to inject a diverse music scene into the region. It hopes to put on as many as 20 or 25 concerts a year. n To purchase tickets to upcoming events or learn more about Rockfest Concerts visit www.rockfestconcerts.com. Tickets to upcoming events are available at Ticketmaster.
