Brigitte Had Behavioral Challenges That Needed To Be Addressed... THERAPIES 4 KIDS WAS THERE TO IMPROVE THEM ALL.

W

hen Brigitte’s family relocated to South Florida, she was having difficulties in school. She was unable to provide eye contact, lacked verbal expression and was unable to tolerate others in her space. That’s when her parents reached out to Therapies 4 Kids. “In just eight months, the changes in Brigitte were amazing. Her separation anxiety has improved, she was able to work for longer periods of time independently and the group sessions at T4K took Brigitte to a whole new level where she was able to overcome social obstacles,” says Brigitte’s mom, Stephanie. “Therapies 4 Kids ABA and Speech therapists worked to design a program to tailor Brigitte’s needs. The staff provided a nurturing, non-judgmental environment where children are treated with dignity and respect. They engaged Brigitte in learning activities that held her attention. Above all, they didn’t give up on her and took the time to build a meaningful relationship with her.”

Coral Springs Citizens Police Academy is in its 39th Year BY NICOL JENKINS

T

he Coral Springs Citizens Police Academy will be held on May 2nd from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Coral Springs Police Department, located at 2801 Coral Springs Drive. The classes cover topics such as Road Patrol Operations, K9, Special Investigations, Communications, and SWAT. There will also be multiple opportunities for hands-on learning through equipment demonstrations, practical scenarios, and ride-a-longs with patrol officers. “The goal of the Citizens Police Academy is to allow citizens to better understand the inner workings of the Police Department,” said Debra Hamilton, Senior Office Assistant to the Community Services Component for the City of Coral Springs. The Citizens Police Academy is free to the public and all applicants must be at least 18 years of age with no felony convictions and are subject to a background check. Selection preferences will be given to Coral Springs residents and those who work or own a business within the City, however everyone is encouraged to apply. Graduates of the Citizens Police Academy are eligible to become a Community Assisted Patrol Volunteer or join the Alumni Association for continued learning opportunities and involvement with the Coral Springs

Police Department. “Attendees are given the opportunity to have an inside perspective of many operational components such as: Special Investigations, Communications (Dispatch), SWAT, K9, road patrol operations including a ride-along with a patrol officer, and more. Additionally, they will receive certification in Bleeding Control (B-CON) and CPR. We hold a gun safety day (which is optional) and a scenario training night, which places the attendee in situations experienced by police officers on a daily basis,” said Hamilton.

The Citizens Police Academy was established during the development of the community policing era. “The focus was placed on not just fighting crime, but developing relationships between officers, business owners and residents. By allowing citizens to individually meet representatives from the police department, it humanizes the profession by removing any external factors that may filter, alter or skew the image of law enforcement. Many professional relationships as well as friendships are established with individuals within the community through this program,” added Hamilton. 2019 begins the 39th annual Citizens Police Academy, which originally was held bi-annually over 20 years ago. “As the years have progressed, and the need for policing has become more prevalent due to increase in population, attendees are exposed to additional specialty units and a more hands-on learning experience. Attendees range from older retired individuals to young adults with an interest in a career in law enforcement,” said Hamilton. Any questions about the Citizens Police Academy can be directed to Debbie Hamilton at 954-346-1746 or dhamilton@ coralsprings.org.

A

s the temperatures start to soar, the best place to beat the heat is at the Calypso Cove Aquatic Facility. Run by the City of Margate’s Parks and Recreation Department, the waterpark offers hours of refreshing fun. Popular with kids of all ages, Calypso Cove is also a great place to host a birthday party. Aquatics Supervisor Maria Moresco shares more about the attractions and programs available to Margate residents and visitors from other communities. What is Calypso Cove? Calypso Cove is a family-friendly waterpark. The Caribbean-themed aquatic facility offers three bodies of water: a six-lane lap pool, a plunge pool which serves as the output for our two waterslides, and a beachentry activity pool with aquatic playground. Tell us more about the aquatic attractions? Children of all ages love our zerodepth activity pool with waterspraying animals, palm trees with tipping coconuts, and a play structure featuring a miniature waterslide and sprinklers. Older kids and adults can ride one of our two 30-foot waterslides, one is enclosed and the other is an open slide. You must be at least

42 inches tall to ride the slides and be able to swim. There is also a lap pool, which we also use for swimming lessons and lifeguard training. Speaking of lifeguards, are the pools supervised? Absolutely! All three bodies of water are supervised by highly trained American Red Cross certified lifeguards. What else is available to ensure the safety of guests at Calypso Cove? We offer shade umbrellas and lifejackets free of charge on a first come first served basis. There is also a full concession stand where guests can purchase beverages to stay hydrated, as well as meals and snacks. We also have complimentary lounge chairs scattered throughout the complex for guests to lay back, relax, and recharge before going back to swim and slide some more. When is Calypso Cove open? Right now, we are still in our Spring Session, which means Calypso Cove is open only on weekends. That runs through June 2nd. We are open daily during our Summer Session, which runs June 8th through August 11th. The Fall Session starts once the kids go back to school. That’s when we return to operating on weekends only

Calypso Cove is extremely reasonably priced for the hours of entertainment it provides. The cost is $4 for Margate residents ages four and up and $7 for non-residents. Children under the age of three are only $1. Swimming is a great form of exercise. When is the lap pool open? The pool is open to lap swimmers on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 10am. The cost is $1 for Margate residents and $2 for non-residents. What types of swimming lessons does the Margate Department of Parks and Recreation offer? American Red Cross swim lessons are offered throughout the year. All classes are taught by American Red Cross certified water safety instructors. We have programs for babies as young as six months old through adults. In March and October, we offer American Red Cross Lifeguard Training. You must be at least 15-years-old to register and pass the pre-course. Does Margate have a swim team? The Margate Motion Swim Team is for swimmers ages five to 18. The

program is designed to teach beginning swimmers the basics and to enhance the technique of advanced swimmers. Interested swimmers must try out prior to joining the team. We are a member of the South Florida Recreational Swim League and compete in approximately three to five meets during the season, including the Championship Meet. Can families host birthday parties at Calypso Cove? Our waterpark is a popular place for children’s birthday parties and other special events. We have an indoor community room as well as two pavilions available for rent. Where exactly is Calypso Cove? The waterpark is located within Royal Palm Park. Nearby is a newly refurbished and expanded fishing dock, three half-court basketball courts and a playground. Anything else you want to add? Calypso Cove is a friendly family-oriented aquatics facility. It’s a relaxed environment where families and friends can spend the perfect funfilled water day. The Calypso Cove Aquatic Facility is located at 6200 Royal Palm Boulevard in Margate. For more information visit www.margatefl.com or call 954-974-4566.

irl Scouts strive every single day to make the world a better place. Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida Troop 10171 certainly took that notion to heart when deciding on a Silver Award Take Action project to help improve their community. Together, Harlow, Heather, and Emma became aware of the plight of the sea turtle and knew they needed to take action after discovering the horrors our sea turtles face due to plastic pollution in our oceans. Inspired by communities that already passed measures limiting plastics in Coral Gables, Fort Lauderdale, Hallandale Beach, and Miami Beach, these G.I.R.L.s® (Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-Takers, and Leaders) embarked on a journey to make a difference in their city. They met with local businesses to gain their support for the proposed ban on plastic straws. They presented this change along with supporting information to the City Commission who voted on the measure and passed the new policy. Thanks to these amazing Girl Scouts, the ban is now in place in the city of Lauderdale By The Sea and potentially thousands of sea turtles

Enjoy time with family at the Parkland Fishing Derby BY NICOL JENKINS

C

ast your line for a great time at this year’s Parkland Fishing Derby. Don’t miss a great family event! The Parkland Fishing Derby will be held on May 11th at the Pine Trails Park fishing pier, 10555 Trails End, Parkland. Check-in will start at 7:45 am, and the sounding of a horn will start at 8 am with a finish at 10 am. The Fishing Derby is a free event and open to all kids, ages 3 to 12. Anglers can win awards for the biggest fish, smallest fish, and most fish caught each event. Remember to

bring your fishing poles, buckets and bait! Each fish caught will be weighed and prizes will be awarded. The City of Parkland invites the community to come out to this great family event. “The goal of the Parkland fishing derby is to encourage kids to get outdoors, enjoy time with their family, friends, and neighbors, and learn about fishing and wildlife,” said Todd DeAngelis, Chief Communications Officer for the City of Parkland. The local Fishing Derby is also an educational event for the community. Local youth can learn a new hobby

that they may not have tried before. The Fishing Derby also encourages learning about species of fish, what to use as bait, how to cast a line, and more. The friendly competition is always a fun time as anglers can win trophies for biggest fish, smallest fish, and most fish caught at each event. The City of Parkland started the fun event to bring the community together. Residents in Parkland love to fish and they have shown interest in having an event where everyone is welcome to fish together. The Pier at Pine Trails Park is a perfect location with a large fishing pier and open space on the surrounding shoreline. “This event was started when the City saw families regularly enjoying the use of the fishing pier at Pine Trails Park. We wanted to bring the community together for a fun and friendly fishing derby throughout the summer months to feature our beautiful park,” said DeAngelis. Bring your child, neighbors, friends and the entire family to this year’s Parkland Fishing Derby.

“This is a great family event as we see dads and daughters, moms and sons, grandparents, siblings, and many more coming out to enjoy a morning on the lake. Being outdoors with each other creates lasting memories that we hope will stay with them forever,” added DeAngelis. n For more information on the Parkland Fishing Derby, call 954-757-4105.

Hawaiian Music performance, Memorial Day Tribute and More at the Parkland Library BY NICOL JENKINS

F

rom a spectacular Hawaiian music concert to a Mother’s Day event and a Memorial Day Tribute, the Parkland Library will host a series of events during the month of May. “Our goal in hosting a variety of events at the library is to cultivate a love for the library and to have everyone become a lifelong library user. We want it to be everyone’s happy place,” said Rhonda Weiss, Program Specialist for the Parkland Library. Here are some of the upcoming events at the Parkland Library. Brain Health: How to Be Proactive, Wednesday, May 1st at 6 p.m. Individuals who have concerns about their memory or who have a family history of dementia can be proactive in their brain health and potentially reduce their risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. Marcia Walker, a research nurse practitioner at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University, will give an educational talk aimed at people, ages 50 and up. She will discuss dementia prevention initiatives and explain what is offered at The Comprehensive Center for Brain Health at FAU. Attendees will also have the opportunity to gain more information about participation in the center’s program. Registration required.

Mother’s Day Craft and Story (age 5 and up), Monday, May 6th at 3:30 p.m. Children, age 5 and up, honor your mom, grandma or aunt this Mother’s Day with a creative DIY craft that you can give as a gift. Make a homemade card to go along with it. Parkland Library card is required to register. Adult Art Class: Watercolor & Art Nouveau, Tuesday, May 7th at 10:30 a.m. Learn tools for infusing creativity into your daily life. Certified Teaching Artist Lori Arbel will guide students through pattern making and watercolor. You will create a meaningful work of art. Go with the flow. Enjoy the process of art making! No art experience needed. All materials will be provided. Parkland Library card is required to register. Yellowbirds Hawaiian Music Performance, Wednesday, May 15th from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Join us for this all-ages Hawaiian music concert and fun craft. The Yellowbirds Ukulele Group will play traditional Hawaiian tunes and familiar favorites. A Parkland Library card is required to register. Memorial Day Tribute Display, Monday, May 20th through Tuesday, May 28th In honor of Memorial Day, the Parkland Library will host a remembrance wall of cards. Stop by during the library’s operating hours anytime from May 20th through May 25th to color a card or write a mes-

sage and have it posted on the wall. The display will stay up through May 28th, the day after Memorial Day. Registration is not required. All materials will be provided. Registration is not required. Parent Snack & Chat (newborn to 18 months), Tuesday, May 21st at 10:30 a.m. Calling all parents of babies! Gather up your baby and come over to the Parkland Library for a relaxing morning of meeting and socializing with others with new babies. We’ll have coffee, tea and breakfast snacks for you to enjoy. Parkland Library card is required to register. The community has found a place to meet new friends and find a new activity. “We definitely find that the library is a gathering place for the community. Parents and their young children make friends in our Storytime classes, while older adults may meet up at an art class or while learning Mah Jongg. We are a place where all ages – babies, kids, teens and adults – can feel comfortable and find something to enjoy,” said Weiss. For more information on these events, visit www.cityofparkland. org/library or call (954) 757-4207.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY ay is a time when we celebrate mothers. Mothers are the ones who we go to for support, help, advice, consoling and even a delicious meal. They are often the helpers and the first ones to reach out to help a friend and neighbor and the last ones to take care of themselves. Our world is a better place thanks to the love, care and support mothers show their families and the assistance and volunteer hours they give to our communities. Thank you to all the mothers for all you do day in and day out to help your families and community. Unfortunately Mother’s Day can also be a very difficult day and a sad reminder for those who have lost their mothers or for mothers who have lost children. So while you celebrate your mother, please show compassion and understanding for those who may be having a difficult time on Mother’s Day. Our community has been forever linked to the community of Santa Fe, TX. The day their shooting happened, I reached out to their mayor who had just been elected and was not even sworn in yet. I offered him my condolences and let him know that we were here for them to provide any help and support we could. Our community knew all too well what he and his city were dealing with. Over the past year, I have remained in contact with the mayor and several of the residents of Santa Fe – some who lost loved ones, some who were injured and some who had children in the building. In September, I visited Santa Fe with my youngest son in order to meet the mayor and residents in person and share any information I could. We talked, we listened, we hugged and we cried. On February 14, 2019, the mayor and residents of Santa Fe held a candle lighting ceremony to honor our community and remember the lives taken and the lives changed forever. It was a beautiful ceremony. We in Parkland will be remembering the victims of the Santa Fe shooting and honoring the Santa Fe community on May 18, 2019 at 8:30am at Liberty Park. I hope you can join us. Please keep their community in your prayers. May is Mental Health month and our community has continued to focus on letting people know about the importance of mental health, self-care and healing and the various resources that are available. One fixture that has been part of the healing process for many has been the Temple of Time by artist, David Best. This was the first of the Healing Through Art projects funded by the Bloomberg Public Art Challenge. Thousands have visited the project since February and wrote on the temple about their sorrows, concerns and pain. The project culminates with a burning to release all the inscribed feelings, pain and grief. The burning is scheduled to take place on May 19 at 7:00pm. Please note that Sample Road will be closed for this event and schedule your plans accordingly. We hope to see you there as we release the Temple of Time and all the burdens and grief it carries. This month I am having open office hours on Tuesday, May 7 from 7:30am-9am at Parkland City Hall. Please feel free to stop by, say hello and ask me any questions you may have. No appointment is necessary. If you are unable to stop by during my open office hours, please feel free to reach out to me at any time at chunschofsky@cityofparkland. org. I always look forward to hearing from residents.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: CORLA SPRINGS

Coral Springs Update MAYOR SCOTT J. BROOK ince I was officially sworn in as the City’s Mayor on March 20, 2019, I have been reacclimating to public service and enjoying meeting with residents and business owners. I am happy to be your New (Old) Mayor! On April 4, 2019, the Coral Springs City Commission held the final hearing to allow Medical Marijuana dispensaries to conduct business within our City’s boundaries. In a second 4-1 vote, in which I was in favor of, we approved moving forward to amend that ordinance. As with all City issues, it is important for residents to get involved and stay informed. City Commission meetings are open to the public and can be viewed on City TV or online at coralsprings.org. I also urge you to join a Board or Committee to get involved! The link is: https://www. coralsprings.org/government/city-clerk/board-and-committee-application During the conclusion of that same Commission Meeting, we paused to honor the years of service and leadership Commissioner Dan Daley has given our City and its residents. Daley vacated Commission Seat 2 effective April 9, 2019, because he ran unopposed for the District 97 Seat for the Florida House of Representatives. We congratulate him on his new position, and I look forward to working with him on a state-level. Daley’s departure resulted in vacancy for Commission Seat 2. Consequently, we will hold a Special Election in Coral Springs on Tuesday, June 18, 2019. It is the civic duty of every Coral Springs resident who is eligible to vote, to cast their ballot for Commission Seat 2! If you are unable to vote in person on that date because of preplanned travel or prior commitments, remember to request a mail-in ballot from the Broward Supervisor of Elections online at browardsoe.org. YOUR VOTE MATTERS! As many of you are aware, last month the City hosted a Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Town Hall Meeting at City Hall. The goal was to inform residents about resources and answer questions related to mental health. I appreciate all of the residents who attended in person and online. You will often here me say, “eliminate the stigma,” and that is something we as a community must do – make mental health and wellness a priority, and openly talk about the need for therapy. There are many resources available for families, they are listed on our website at coralsprings.org/msd. Please go to the site and share this link with others. On Sunday, May 19, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. the City of Coral Springs, in partnership with the City of Parkland, will ceremoniously burn the Temple of Time. The first of the five public art installations, The Temple of Time, was constructed by world-renowned artist, David Best, and hundreds of Coral Springs and Parkland residents. It officially opened on February 14, 2019. The temporary, 35-foot wooden structure, remains open for visitors until the ceremonial fire on the 19th. The burn will carefully be coordinated by the Coral SpringsParkland Fire Department and Coral Springs Police Department. As with all temples created by Best, it is a place to reflect and leave behind difficult feelings and emotions. Traditionally, the temples are burned within two weeks, but The Temple of Time has remained open for three months to allow for as many visitors as possible. All parking for the event will be at City Hall (9500 West Sample Road). To learn more about the Power of Art, visit poweroa.org. If you would like to schedule an appointment to speak with me, please call (954) 344-5906, or if you have an issue you would like to bring to my attention, email me at Sbrook@coralsprings.org. Please also free to call me on my cell phone at 954-696-7599. Have a Great Day!

S

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: MARGATE

Margate Update MAYOR ANTHONY N. CAGGIANO hether I’m talking with residents at a Wii bowling event at the NW Focal Point Senior Center, presenting a plaque at the Grand Opening of a new business, attending a Sounds of Sundown event (first Saturday of every month) or watching a youth baseball game at our Sports Complex … they are happy. Happiness is increased when one properly prepares. Preparing your home by starting to stockpile items for Hurricane season, is important. Making sure your children have taken swimming lessons, because drowning is the number one cause of death for children in Florida, is a vital necessity. Do it, don’t wish you did. Margate’s Calypso Cove Aquatic Facility offers life-saving swimming classes to residents. Classes start in June. The Ace Plaza renovations are nearing completion and the Plaza is looking great. The sound barrier walls on Atlantic Boulevard are being upgraded and when finished, will look beautiful. Please remember to join us at the end of the month for our Memorial Day remembrance. Join us in remembering the fallen, those that sacrificed everything so that we can sleep safely at night. July 4th is right around the corner, start preparing your float for the parade. Margate Sports Complex Improvements The City of Margate is excited to announce the completion of a major improvement project at the Margate Sports Complex, located at 1695 Banks Road. Margate’s little league baseball players can now enjoy the new, state-ofthe-art batting cages and dugouts. And, baseball enthusiasts can comfortably watch their children play while sitting in bleachers that are covered by shade canopies. The improvements at the park also include an ADA accessible covered playground with equipment that allows complete access for disabled and unique users. The multi-purpose trail, which includes handicap accessible fitness equipment, also provides complete ADA access throughout the park. Park improvements were made possible in part by a $204,500.00 Unique Abilities Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP) grant that enabled the City to increase the opportunity for users of all ages and abilities to participate in a wide range of recreational activities at the Margate Sports Complex. Memorial Day Ceremony Set for May 27th at 9 a.m. Join the City of Margate for one of our most popular events, the annual Memorial Day Ceremony. City officials, residents and members of the Armed Services will come together on Monday, May 27th at 9 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park to honor the men and women who have paid the ultimate price for our country. Veterans Memorial Park is located at 7044 N.W. 1st Street (S.E. corner of Rock Island Road and N.W. 1st Street). Register Now for City’s New Martial Arts Class Sign up your kids for Margate’s Martial Arts Program! Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Katz Community Center, 6111 NW 10th Street. Sessions for kids ages 5 to 10 are from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. for kids 11 to 16 years old. There is no contract or belt fees.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF: MARGATE

Social Media is Critical in Law Enforcement CHIEF JON SHAW

2018

S

ocial Media is changing law enforcement and more than ever, people want transparency. The Margate Police Department, along with many agencies across the United States use social media as an economical and effective way to inform the community about current events, safety bulletins, traffic updates, feel-good stories and everything in between! In an effort to create public awareness and encourage our residents to report suspicious activity, we use social media. It is one of our most important platforms of communicating with the members and residents of our community. Social media helps our department efficiently and quickly provide information. We post our 8:15pm MPD Nightly Routine and try to keep our community engaged by making them catchy and engaging! If you don’t know, our MPD Nightly Routine is a quick, informative reminder to remove your valuables and lock your vehicles each night before heading to bed. This is a simple way to protect your belongings and prevent you from becoming a victim. Our department consistently uses social media on a daily basis. It is an absolutely amazing way for us to share different events that we are planning in the community and promote safety and crime prevention tips.
