T
he CDC recently announced that more than half of American adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. After the “lost” year of 2020, we are all eager to get back to our “normal” lives. This is especially true with families with young children. Finding and planning summer activities can be especially challenging this year. Luckily, we’ve got you covered! Be sure to check out Our City’s Summer Camp Guide in this month’s issue. We have included a carefully curated reference of the area’s day camps, academic enrichment programs, and sporting activities with options for children of all ages. Whether your child is an avid cheerleader, a soccer star, a budding actor, or a future scientist, Our City’s Summer Camp Guide has something for everyone and every interest. To make choosing the perfect program, or programs, even easier, we’ve designed the Summer Camp Guide to allow parents to match summer activities to their kids’ interests. When it comes to making the most out of school breaks, Our City has got you covered. But, we are also your go-to resource for children’s activities throughout the school year. Be sure to look for our special Back to School Guide in the August issue for a detailed listing of after-school programs, athletic activities, and artistic enrichment pursuits as well as area preschools and private schools.

KUMON MATH AND READING CENTERS
GETTING KIDS’ LEARNING BACK ON TRACK By Terry Jaillet
K
umon Math and Reading Centers have been helping students maximize their potential through individualized learning programs since 1954. The Kumon Method is a learning approach that pursues each student’s potential and develops their ability to the maximum. Kids’ learning loss during the pandemic has made out-of-school learning programs more critical than ever before. Ranked as the number one education franchise by Entrepreneur magazine for the past two decades, Kumon is looking to grow its presence in our area. Starting a business with Kumon Math and Reading Centers gives a unique opportunity to help parents and teachers in the community, especially with overcoming and advancing past the learning loss kids’ experienced during the pandemic. We had a chance to speak with Kumon’s Vice President of Center Network Development to learn more.
Tell us what makes Kumon unique. Kumon is unique because it’s not tutoring—parents may find us because they have a child that is struggling in school, but once the struggles are over, kids often advance quickly to work on concepts that are way past what they're doing in school. In fact, it's not unusual for kids in Kumon to have mastered concepts that are two and three levels above their current grade level. Our program can take kids all the way through calculus and high-level reading and writing. What this means for our franchisees is that they build a good, stable base of students instead of kids who are enrolled short-term while they overcome a particular challenge, as you’d see at a traditional tutoring center.
Are there franchise opportunities in the area? There are new franchise opportunities for those that wish to start fresh, but we also have a few established centers for
HOW DOES KUMON WORK DAY-TO-DAY?
Daily assignments take about 30 minutes per subject to complete.
16 / May 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
Two days a week, kids complete assignments at their Kumon Center; the other five days, assignments are completed at home.
sale for those that want to get started with an existing student base. Kumon is an ideal low-cost education franchise for those who want to make a real impact in their community—the knowledge and skills kids develop prepares many Kumon Students to succeed in advanced programs in high school and college. It is so rewarding to see their progress!
Do you have to have experience in tutoring or education? As a Kumon Franchisee, you won’t be teaching or tutoring. Instead, you’ll be guiding and encouraging kids as they work through the levels of the program. No teaching or tutoring experience is needed and Kumon will train you fully on the Kumon Method and how to build a successful business.
Interesting, tell us about the Kumon method. The Kumon Method is a manner of learning in which kids apply themselves 20-30 minutes each day per subject, working on specially designed math and reading worksheets. As they work, they are mastering each concept completely before advancing. Plus, they are increasing focus and developing skills like time management, organization and critical thinking. Kumon helps kids learn to figure things out on their own, a valuable skill called self-learning.
We’ve heard you even cover start-up expenses. Yes! Kumon covers up to $34,000 in start-up expenses, including items like up to $1,000 a month in rent for the first 12 months, the student desk and chairs needed for the center, and the exterior sign. We don’t charge our franchisees for national marketing, and we even cover the cost of some of their local marketing to help them launch their new business! Most importantly, our investment starts at less than $65,000, and even that gets reduced by the incentives we offer. Veterans with a Bachelor’s degree will get an additional $10,000 credit!
WHAT SETS KUMON APART? 1
Kumon goes far beyond tutoring
Kumon is a structured, proven self-learning program that gives kids the critical thinking skills and mindset to learn new material independently. The key to Kumon is the individualized instruction, carefully planned by an Instructor.
2

BCPS Gets Set to Power Up with New Electric School Buses
B
roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is getting ready to power up with new electric school buses, thanks to a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). Through the grant,
the District is purchasing 60 electric buses. BCPS is also partnering with Florida Power & Light Company, which will provide the charging infrastructure for the electric buses at each BCPS transportation terminal.
Each electric bus is a standard 72-passenger vehicle. Unlike typical diesel buses, the electric buses produce no emissions at the tailpipe and are quiet on the road – reducing noise pollution. The quiet ride makes it more comfortable for passengers inside to have conversations. The District is now working to complete its order for the 60 new buses, with the goal of having them delivered and ready to use within the next year. Once the buses hit the road, BCPS will be operating the largest fleet of electric buses in the state. “This exciting opportunity is an example of our District’s commitment to protect the communities we drive-through and the environment as we move toward healthier and
more environmentally friendly transportation options,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We appreciate the state’s support and collaboration with this grant. Reducing our carbon footprint is a responsibility we all share. We’re excited to be taking this first step with 60 electric buses and look forward to expanding our fleet of electric buses moving forward.” The District’s Student Transportation and Fleet Services Department includes approximately 1,300 buses, with about 950 used during daily routes and the remaining buses used for school events and activities. The new electric buses will serve as replacements for older diesel school buses built-in or before 2009.

Local Music Artist Hosting Benefit Concert for
Alzheimer’s Awareness
M
usic is often a comforting therapy for people living with Alzheimer’s disease. 18-year-old Ben Miller realized this fact at a young age. He performed a benefit concert to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association on Tuesday, April 20th at Johnnie Brown’s in Delray Beach. “My grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2015,” said Miller, who is a senior at North Broward Preparatory School. “I found that if I sang old nostalgic tunes to her, she was able to hum along and often finish the lines to the songs. It allowed us to communicate on a different level once her verbal skills started to diminish.” Inspired by his grandmother, whom he affectionately calls “Beeba,” Miller has been raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association alongside his mother, Tanya, for years. Recently, Miller also started gaining traction as an up-and-coming music artist, having released his debut single “Malibu Water” in February. He combined those two passions with an Alzheimer’s benefit concert. “My grandmother is a huge supporter of me and always has been, so that’s why I’m really wanting to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association through this event,” Miller noted, adding that he is releasing his second single, “Your Lies,” this weekend before the concert. 28 / May 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
The event offered attendees an opportunity to enjoy Miller’s latest music while supporting the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association. A portion of both Miller’s tips and the venue’s drink sales were donated to the Boca Raton Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which will take place Sunday, Nov. 14. “Music brings happiness,” Miller added, “and I want to share that joy with others.” Alzheimer’s disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6 million Americans are currently battling the disease, including 580,000 Floridians.
Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research programs. Although the event was held virtually last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alzheimer’s Association is moving forward with plans to walk in person this year. Stefanie Mardar, director of the Boca Raton Walk to End Alzheimer’s, said:
“Thanks to dedicated community members like Ben, the Alzheimer’s Association is able to provide 24/7 care and support while advancing critical Alzheimer’s research. Families facing Alzheimer’s and dementia need our help now more than ever, so we are thrilled to have such wonderful volunteers helping us to support them.” For donations and additional information, contact Ben Miller at (561) 901-0900 or benmiller02@me.com, or Tanya Miller at (561) 866-9627 or tanyamiller73@me.com. Our vision is a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. For more information, visit www.alz.org/walk.

If you or a loved one is at risk due to disability, frailty, or other health issue, regardless of age - register for the Vulnerable Population Registry. A Young Man’s Perspective By Terry Jaillet
P
arkland resident Carlitos Rodriguez wasn’t sure what to expect when he participated in the National Geographic Society’s Virtual Photo Camp: Democracy in Action with two National Geographic Explorers and world-renowned photographers, Andrea Bruce and David Guttenfelder. The camp – which brought together young people to share their perspectives and experiences through storytelling – asked students to share their experiences and give their perspective on what democracy means to them and how they see democracy in action in their communities. “When I was 17 years old, there was a shooting at my high school that completely changed my perspective of life,” commented Carlitos, “After understanding the pain and suffering, I also realized that this could’ve also happened at either of my younger sister’s schools. I decided to be as loud as possible with my emotions, thoughts, and art so that no other young person felt the fear of attending school any longer. I believe that the voice of the youth matters as much as anyone else’s, and we all deserve an equal opportunity at participating in democracy.” Carlitos had three assignments during the program. One, to show a “Sense of Place,” the second to feature “Someone you Admire,” and a third on “Self Reflection.” This photo is part of his self-reflection submission. “The red pictures go deeper to the creativity and chaos that lies within. I am an artist full of stories and emotions that are crazy to get out of control. I love creating. It is a necessity for me to create. If I spend too much time away from my music or cameras, the chaos begins to surface. God gave me art as a tool to guard and protect my spirit.” We can’t wait to see what Carlitos does next!

KOUYOU BUFFET Offers a Taste for Every Pallet By Terry Jaillet
T
he space is open, modern and welcoming. Unlike some Asian restaurants, the decoration is not overstated. The various food options stretch along the side of one entire wall of the restaurant and included sushi options, a salad bar, a hibachi grill, traditional hot dishes, and a dessert buffet. We felt right at home, sitting in our booth next to a window. It is obvious that every aspect of this restaurant is brand new.
THE FOOD
The challenge with any buffet restaurant is balancing choice with quality. Kouyou tackles this challenge by having specialists in each area. The sushi bar is managed by a master sushi chef, while the hibachi is attended by an executive chef ready to cook to order. We found all of the items fresh and well-stocked.
SUSHI
area. But, there is much more. In the evenings, the cold bar includes fancier offering like snow crab legs, oysters, peel and eat shrimp and even more sushi options.
HIBACHI
The Hibachi offers steak, chicken & shrimp, along with a variety of traditional vegetables and tofu. They even offer some unusual items like corn on the cob. The chef made my teriyaki chicken with care. It was perfectly seasoned and not too sweet. The hot food selections are what you would expect from Chinese and Thai cuisine. They include all of our favorites like Szechuan beef, Kung Pao chicking, and Thai coconut shrimp. The dumplings were fresh, which is a tricky thing at a buffet! The salad bar offered a vast choice of vegetables, fruits, and dressings. They even offer pizza and fries for families with picky kids.
“One of the best meals and best values you can find in the area.”-JB
If you enjoy sushi and have a big appetite, this may be the best restaurant in the area. They offer a great variety of rolls, nigiri and sashimi options. The sushi rolls look like works of art. Beautiful, brightly colored and created with obvious care. This is a long way from the typical spicy tuna. The fish lovers in our group loved the Seared Tuna Tataki, Magic Moon Roll, and Tuna Lover’s Roll. The salmon was freshtasting and sweet. They also offered some less-common buffet options like white tuna and yellowtail. Low-card dieters will be excited to know that Kouyou offers several rice-free sushi rolls as well. Sushi-lovers could enjoy a wonderful, satisfying meal without ever leaving the sushi
THE VERDICT
Buffet restaurants offer all-you-can-eat quantities and a broad selection of choices. Good buffets offer those choices with a focus on cleanliness and freshness. Great buffets add expensive, sought-after items like snow crab legs, oysters or filet mignon. Based on these criteria, The Kouyou Buffet is a great restaurant. They have a huge variety of tasty food. Our only problem during our visit was overeating.

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood/Aventura, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers,
such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. May is for Mothers
By State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky
M
ay is a time when we celebrate mothers. Mothers are the ones who we go to for support, help, advice, and consoling. They are often the helpers and the first ones to reach out to help a family member, friend or neighbor. Our world is a better place thanks to the love, care and support mothers give. Unfortunately, Mother’s Day can also be a difficult day and a sad reminder for those who have lost their mothers or for mothers who have lost children. So while you celebrate this day, please keep for those who may be having a difficult time on Mother’s Day in your thoughts. The 2021 Legislative Session is over and while we completed this session’s policy work in Tallahassee, the budget and legislation that passed can still be vetoed by the Governor. We will continue to provide updates on the progress and final details of the budget and legislation through our eNewsletter. You can subscribe by emailing HDIST096@myfloridahouse.gov with “subscribe” in the subject and I can keep you up-to-date on final details of the Legislative Session. This month I have scheduled two informative sessions for our district. I will be hosting a Post-Session Legislative Wrap-Up Virtual Town Hall on Tuesday, May 25th at 7:00 pm. To RSVP for this Town Hall please email Beth.Lerner@myfloridahouse.gov with “RSVP” in the subject so that we can email you a link to sign up. Additionally, on Monday, May 17th at 6:30 pm, I have invited the Florida Department of Transportation to present an update on the Loxahatchee Road project. As we receive more detailed information on that meeting, I will post it online. You can also email Beth.Lerner@myfloridahouse.gov with “LOX” in the subject so that we can email you a link to sign up. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of those living with mental or behavioral health issues and to help reduce the stigma of mental illness. Many of us have faced challenges of isolation, loss, and additional anxiety this past year due to the pandemic. This has resulted in additional mental health challenges for many. It is critical that we all take time to assess how we are doing and also to check in on our family, friends, and neighbors. Help and resources are available by calling 211 in Broward County. You can also visit www.211-Broward.org or www.eagleshaven.org for additional assistance. I want to thank all of you who have reached out to me with your concerns, comments, questions, and feedback. If you need assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office by phone (954) 956-5600 or email HDIST096@myfloridahouse. gov. To learn more about our work in Tallahassee and District 96, please subscribe to our weekly newsletter, by emailing HDIST096@myfloridahouse.gov with “subscribe” in the subject line. Also, follow me on Facebook at @RepHunschofsky and Twitter @RepHunschofsky for regular updates. I look forward to hearing from you!
THE CORAL SPRINGS COMMISSION
R
MAY MESSAGE
egardless of the challenges we have experienced and continue to mitigate related to the COVID-19 pandemic, your City Commission and city staff remain committed to public service and meeting the needs of our residents and businesses. The health, safety and well-being of the public is one of the most important services we can provide in city government, which is why we have put so much effort and commitment in securing vaccines for our residents. If you have not scheduled an appointment for your vaccine, check your local pharmacies for availability or visit https://myvaccine.fl.gov and sign up! What we have missed the most during COVID-19 is hosting events, which bring our residents and community members together. With the increase in vaccinations and decrease in COVID-19 cases, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. As we continue to host events with virtual options, we are also starting to plan in person events too – like our Memorial Day Cermony! These are some of the events we have on the horizon: On Thursday, May 6, 2021, at 7 p.m., the Clergy Coalition of Coral Springs and Parkland, in partnership with the Coral Springs Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee, will honor and celebrate the Annual National Day of Prayer. Residents can tune in through the livestream or on CityTV, Blue Stream Channels 25, 25.7, 725 and on AT&T U-Verse channel 99. Earlier this year, the city launched a four-month open play chess program, leading up to the inaugural King of Coral Springs Chess Tournament, taking place on Saturday May 15, 2021. The tournament will be held in partnership with the National Scholastic Chess Foundation at the Coral Springs Gymnasium. For more information and details, please visit www. coralsprings.org/events. On Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 7 p.m., the Annual Teen Political Forum will be held live virtually on Twitter, YouTube, CityTV, Blue Stream Channels 25, 25.7, 725 and on AT&T U-Verse channel 99. The forum is planned and organized by high school students, with guidance from city officials and staff. High School students are encouraged to participate in the 2021 Teen Political Forum - an open mic style forum for students to raise questions and converse with state, county and local elected officials about issues that are important to them. Memorial Day is more than just an extension to the weekend where citizens enjoy pool parties and family cookouts. It’s a day to honor the brave men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives in service to our nation. This year, the city is excited to host a Memorial Weekend Family-Friendly Concert,
with safely distanced pods, at Sportsplex. In addition, the city, in partnership with the Coral Springs Veterans Coalition, will host its annual, in-person Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Park (8601 Royal Palm Boulevard). For details about programming for both events, please visit coralsprings.org/events. Although we are excited to finally have the return of some sense of normalcy in our city, we ask residents continue to do their part to prevent the spread COVID-19. The end of the worst of COVID-19 is near and we could not be more excited to reconnect with residents at events, ceremonies, and public meetings with our residents in the future. Learn more about all of these events at coralsprings.org/events or text the keyword CORALSPRINGS to 888-777 to receive updates and information.
We wish all of the women who are mothers or maternally care for others, a Happy Mother’s Day. If you would like to schedule an appointment with any of your City Officials, please call 954-344-5911. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
PARKLAND UPDATE By Mayor Rich Walker
H
appy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in our lives, including stepmothers, godmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and more. Having a large family like mine is wonderful, but it puts a lot of responsibility on the mom of our house. My wife, Catherine always finds time to juggle everything, whether it is keeping all of us on schedule, shuttling kids around, or volunteering for school and organizations close to our hearts. I know she is not alone in these kinds of efforts, so I applaud all of the incredible mothers who help make the world go ‘round. Mother’s Day is an extra sentimental day for me as it marks a day to reminisce about my own mom and all of our moments together. Though it has been almost four years since her passing, I think about her and miss her every day. May is also my brother Scott’s birthday. I lost him to suicide almost 20 years ago. I always wonder what life would have been like with him still around. We were very close, and I would have loved for our children to
grow up together. This underscores the importance of looking out for each other—if you see something, please say something. If you know someone who needs help, try to be there for them and help in whatever way you can. With the events of the past few months in national headlines, it emphasizes the need to come together and work on our problems as a country, as a community, and as friends. Life is short and it is important to stay positive, be compassionate, and remain united. Great things happen when we work together and put aside our grievances and agendas to do what is best for everyone. Memorial Day is May 31st and it is a day we honor members of the military who made the ultimate sacrifice—without which we would not be the America we are today. We appreciate not only their sacrifice, but that of their families as well. Join us at Veterans Park on Memorial Day at 9:00 a.m. for a ceremony to pay tribute to them. As we near the close of the school year, and an unprecedented one at that, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude towards all educators, administrators, students, and families. Your vigilance
in following appropriate protocols to protect yourselves has been admirable. We need to sustain these efforts a while longer to ensure we continue moving in the right direction. As a City Commission, we continue working through our strategic planning process and I am excited about the direction the City is headed. I thank staff for their hard work in ensuring we always have the most accurate information so that we can effectively make the best choices. I appreciate all the residents for their communication and insightful feedback. We share the same vision of creating the best experience for our families in this great City. I look forward to the final stages of our planning in September when we finalize the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. In the meantime, communication is vital to our success and I encourage you to reach out to me at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. You can also follow the City’s social media platforms to ensure you are aware of all of our events and important information. Visit cityofparkland.org and click any social media icon.
