Back to School in South Florida

S

ummer vacations are a hallmark of modern life. After the final bell of the school year rings, children from across the country anxiously head home, often looking forward to trips abroad, excursions to the beach, local “staycations” or time at summer camps. Summer break, however, does not last forever. Most local kids return to school on August 14th this year. They will bring with them stories of adventure, excitement and maybe even a little bit of boredom. Like vacation options, the number of after-school programs has exploded. There are a myriad of activities and opportunities for families to choose from. Parents also have more choice in how their kids are educated today; rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, parents now decide between their local public school, charter schools, private schools or online learning. So many choices can become overwhelming. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out Our City’s Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide our readers with a useful guide to help get ready for the new school year. Remember to enjoy the last couple weeks of summer. Before you know it, school will have already started.

City of Parkland Hosts Fishing Derby BY NICOL JENKINS

D

on’t miss this great family event! The Parkland Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, August 10th at the Pine Trails Park fishing pier, 10555 Trails End, Parkland. Check-in will start at 7:45 am, and the sounding of a horn will start at 8 am with a finish at 10 am. The Fishing Derby is a free event and open to all kids, ages 3 to 12. Anglers can win awards for the biggest fish, smallest fish, and most fish caught each event. Remember to bring your fishing poles, buckets and bait! Each fish caught will

be weighed and prizes will be awarded. The City of Parkland wants the community to come out to this summer event. “The goal of the Parkland Fishing Derby is to encourage kids to go outdoors, enjoy quality time with their family, friends, and neighbors, and learn about fishing and wildlife. Also, if parents are seeking technology-free time for their kids, this is a perfect activity sans cell phones,” said Todd DeAngelis, Chief Communications Officer for the City of Parkland. “The Derby started when we realized many families were regularly usingand enjoying quality time together- at the fishing pier at Pine Trails Park. In that regard, this event actually started with our residents. When we saw them using the pier, we decided to formalize an event around that concept,” added DeAngelis. The Parkland Fishing Derby has become known as a family friendly event. “f you’re wondering why this is a great

family event, I’d encourage you to go to it. It won’t take long for you to figure out… dads and daughters, moms and sons, grandparents, brothers and sisters, everyone leaving their troubles at home and enjoying time together at the park. And though summer events in Florida can be hot, this event starts early enough that it beats the heat,” he said. “The real value of this summer event, other than beating the heat with the early start, is the opportunity it provides residents to, at least one Saturday each month, to have a family activity formally organized. We love having events in which families interact not only among themselves, but one family with another. That’s how friendships begin, that’s how neighbors interact- it’s the very definition of community,” continued DeAngelis. The young fishermen learn many valuable lessons from this event. “Lessons that the kids learn from the Fishing Derby include patience. Let’s face it, there’s little that requires more patience than standing on a pier waiting

for something to happen. The event also promotes sportsmanship and kindness. They learn the practice of gently releasing fish and being kind to nature. But, above all, it teaches kids at an early age, about the sense of community that is so prevalent in Parkland,” said DeAngelis. The first two dates of the Parkland Fishing Derby have been well-attended and a lot of fun for everyone! The city continues to see the same faces returning year-after-year, but would love welcoming first timers. n For more information on this event, call 954-757-4105.

Dance Theatre Has The Mettle & The Medals N

ow entering its 27th season serving South Florida, Dance Theatre remains the top choice for dancers of all ages to train. With four Broward locations, including two in Parkland and Coral Springs, Dance Theatre has become an integral part of our community one fabulous dancer at a time. Accolades? Of course. Dance Theatre has been awarded the prestigious “Reader’s Choice” and “Best in the West” awards multiple times. Trophies? Thousands. Dance Theatre’s elite team of competitive dancers, DTX, consistently receives top awards at virtually every competition they enter. Testimonials? You bet. Just ask any mother in the carpool line and they’ll tell you that Dance Theatre has been like a home away from home for their children. So, what is it that makes this place so special? “Our formula is simple” says owner and Director Michelle Gerlick, “We build beautiful, safe, clean facilities, hire Dance Theatre the best teachers in Offers the business, and Classes for Children treat each child that Ages 3 walks through our and Up doors as if they were our very own.” “Awards are nice, and our trophies are beautiful,” Michelle continues, “but that’s not what we strive for. We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate. It is incumbent upon us to do it effectively. We train exceptional dancers, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models who help to guide our students as they mature. We work hard, we have passion, and we care deeply about the impact we have on their lives. When a parent tells me that their child has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. That is why we do this.” Michelle certainly has the pedigree to run one of the nation’s most successful dance programs. Her mother Joan was a Rockette, June Taylor Dancer, and half of a performance

duo, along with her father Bob, which thrilled audiences the world over working with the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Tony Bennett. Michelle spent nearly every day of her youth inside her parents’ dance school, the Academy of Ballet Arts, perfecting her craft, and then earned both a degree in Dance from Ohio State University, and a degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern. Her professional credits include performing as a Miami Heat Dancer for the NBA, a “Fly Girl” on Fox Television’s In Living Color, and an NFL Super Bowl Choreographer. Michelle has since led her students at Dance Theatre to The Summer Olympics, The Super Bowl, and The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, among countless other extraordinary venues. Still not convinced that Dance Theatre is THE place for your young dancer to train? Consider this...they offer a truly comprehensive program where dancers ages 3 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline. These include the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, acrobatics, and pointe, as well as specialty classes like strength and flexibility, leaps and turns, and the newest arrival, aerial silks and lyra. In addition, Dance Theatre offers two options for dancers who wish to

expand their dance education beyond the walls of the studio. Some join their performance company, DTC, which specializes in providing entertainment at amazing venues like Universal Studios, Royal Caribbean Cruises, and Florida Marlin, Miami Heat, and Miami Dolphins games. Look for them on TV as they take the field at this season’s Jets game. Go Fins! Other students, those who aspire to become dance professionals someday, join their elite competitive group, DTX. Navigating Through College Choices Just Got Easier BY LOURDES RODRIGUEZ

Is college on the radar in your household? When it comes to finding the right college fit, campus visits can help narrow down the selection. In-person tours are a helpful step in the college application process, particularly for students interested in competitive four-year schools. According to U.S. News & World Report: “Before choosing the best college to attend, it is important for students to test the waters. Making a college visit and touring the campus can be pivotal in a student’s decision.” In the Sunshine State, the University of Florida’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) in Gainesville, FL is set to host the newly developed NaviGATORing CALS program on two separate dates: September 6 and September 13. The program provides a full day of experiences on campus tailored to a student’s areas of interest. CALS is part of UF/IFAS, the agricultural, natural resources andlife sciences division of the university. NaviGATORing CALS provides high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to shadow a CALS Ambassador, learn more about the college and the UF admissions process (both for freshmen and transfer students), sit in on classes related to their

major of interest, learn about numerous campus organizations and activities, and explore the unique majors, minors and professional development opportunities in CALS. “The NaviGATORing CALS program was designed to show prospective students what it’s like to live a day in the life of a CALS student,” said CALS Dean Elaine Turner. “With personalized schedules based on each participant’s subject area of interest, our tour attendees experience all UF and CALS have to offer. This includes how our more than 20 majors can assist in preparing them for a long-term career in health care, natural resources, sustainability, food systems, human wellbeing and agriculture industries.” It is important for students to know what they want to get out of a college experience before stepping on campus. Turner encourages students to consider these three tips to help with the college selection process: 1. Think about how a college or university’s strengths align with personal career goals

and skill sets. 2. Pick a college based on academic programs, extracurricular and hands-on learning experiences, location and faculty teaching excellence. 3. If students can imagine themselves at a particular institution they are on the right track to selecting the school that will be a great fit for them. To learn more information about NaviGATORing CALS and to register for a tour, visit: https://cals.ufl. edu/prospective/navigatoringcals/. n The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) administers the degree programs of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS). Tips to Get Ready for Back To School! BY NICOL JENKINS

S

summer winds down, it’s time to focus on getting back to the books and classes for local students. Set your alarm clocks! The first day of school for Broward County students is Wednesday, August 14th. To help ease the back to school jitters and the transition from summer to another school year, parents can use these helpful tips. Reading counts! Make sure your children are reading during the summer so they are prepared for back to school. Many schools have a summer reading list for students. You can also ask your child’s teacher for any book recommendations.

Make sure your kids get to bed early a few weeks before school starts! This will help them get adjusted to the new schedule. Establishing schedules for homework, dinnertime, and sports times also helps. If your child is going to a new school, visit the campus before the first day back. Walk around the hallways, classrooms, cafeteria, and school office so your child will know how to navigate their way around their new school. If your children are taking the bus to school or carpooling, be sure to map out the schedule ahead of time. Students should also be aware of traffic safety if walking or taking a bus to school. Find out the bus routes, know the bike and walking paths or chart out your carpooling plans ahead of time. Shop early for school supplies! Deals on school supplies can go fast! Make sure to shop ahead of time and to check your child’s school supplies list! Many stores also have specials on back to school clothes. Be on the lookout for coupons. It’s also important to prepare for back to school meals! If you are packing your child’s lunch, be sure to include healthy meal items and mix it up during the week so they don’t get bored eating the same food. It’s vital to

choose healthy meal options for your children. Your child’s school should have a list of meal options. Preparing for school doesn’t end after the bell rings! Make sure you have a calendar filled with after school activities and sporting events. It’s important to know the dates and times for after school sports games, club meetings and activities so you can arrange pick-up or carpooling. Visit your child’s school website for a list of important school dates and contact information. They will also list half days, school events and days off, along with important information for students, parents and teachers. These helpful back to school tips will help to ease your child’s back to school jitters and guide them to a bright school year ahead!

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY ith August upon us, it is hard to believe how quickly the summer is flying by, Especially with Broward County Public Schools starting on August 14. Going back to school is often a stressful time – getting supplies, working out schedules and getting back into our normal school routine. While it can be easy to get caught up in the back to school rush, we have to be mindful that our children pick up on our stress and anxiety so it is important that we manage our reactions as best we can. In the past weeks you may have noticed the change made to our city’s weekly “Parkland On Tap” email. We have added more content regarding capital projects going on in the city as well as general information. If you have not yet signed up for our city email, please visit www.cityofparkland.org/notifyme. Also, if you have not already done so, please download our My Parkland App on your phone. Through the app you can report issues and they will be routed directly to the city department that handles the issue. Additionally you can search the city calendar, review capital project updates and follow city commission agendas on the My Parkland app. Over the upcoming months, we will continue to improve our communication outreach with residents.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Coral Springs Update MAYOR SCOTT J. BROOK hope everyone is having a great summer so far. It’s hard to believe the 2019/2020 school year begins in just a few weeks. As the kids return to school, I can assure you that the safety of our children and the quality of education they receive, remains mine and that of my fellow Commissioners number one priority. Speaking of our schools, I want to congratulate our “A” rated schools - Country Hills Elementary, Eagle Ridge Elementary, Imagine Schools at Broward and Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) all maintained their “A” ratings. I could not be prouder of the fact that the Cityoperated school – the Coral Springs Charter School received an “A” rating for the 16th consecutive year. Our City Commission remains so excited to work with Commissioner Shawn Cerra, as he completes our team of five. Congratulations again to Commissioner Cerra and for showing such grace at your swearing in! For our MSD Eagles community, I remind you that the Eagles’ Haven Community Wellness Center remains open seven-days-a-week through the remainder of the summer, with hours Monday – Friday 9 a.m.- 7 p.m. and weekends, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is so much to do and experience, and most importantly, it’s free! Check out their website eagleshaven.org for class offerings and schedules. I want to remind Coral Springs homeowners to be on the lookout for their Proposed Property Taxes Notice (TRIM) in the mail starting the second week of August. These notices are mailed directly from the Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office. I encourage residents to take an active role in our City’s budget process by attending the hearings or watching live online at cscitytv.org.The Coral Springs Commission will hold our first public budget hearing on September 12th at 5:15 p.m. and second hearing on September 18th at 6:30 p.m. in Commission Chambers at City Hall. Our popular food truck event, Bites & Sips, returns to City Hall on Saturday, August 31 from 6-10 p.m. In addition to the most popular food trucks in South Florida, the event will feature live entertainment and fun for the whole family. There is plenty of free parking in the City Hall garage, so just bring a lawn chair and an appetite. Our City remains committed to honoring the victims who lost their lives during the September 11th attack on our nation, by annually hosting the Coral Springs 5K Remembrance Run. This family-friendly run is scheduled for September 7th and participants are encouraged to register as part of a team. To learn more about the 5K and our other City events, visit coralsprings.org/events.

I

I enjoy meeting with residents while attending events and activities in the City, but if you have an issue or concern you would like to sit down to discuss, make an appointment by calling (954) 344-5906 or email me at sbrook@coralsprings.org. Please free to contact me on my cell phone at (954) 696-7599. Thank you for your interest in our City. 36 AUGUST 2019 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Struggling with Pelvic Pain? BY RAHIL MALIK M.D. FACOG bdominal pain in women is a common malady. Statistics from the Centre for Disease Control show a national trend with as much as 12-15% of all visits to the emergency room (E.R.) attributed to abdominal pain. However, only a small percentage of these visits are due to emergent conditions and most patients require outpatient visits with specialists to further manage their pain. It is not uncommon for women to struggle with abdominal pain for days, weeks, months and sometimes years, before discovering the cause of their pain and identifying strategies to help fix the source of their pain. The difficulties in identifying the cause behind a patient’s abdominal pain stems from the various organ systems that can potentially give rise to the pain. It can be challenging to identify the cause of the pain and often blood tests, imaging studies (CT, MRI, Ultrasound) and sometimes surgery are required before a final diagnosis can be made. Visits to numerous doctors and undergoing multiple medical tests can be time-consuming, demoralizing and costly for an individual. However, this process can be improved with simple steps that a patient can take towards owning their health and being prepared for their visits. A thorough history and physical exam can allow a physician to identify the most likely culprit behind your pain and reduce the number of diagnostic tests. A visit with your Ob-Gyn can be helpful in your evaluation but an unprepared soul can sometimes find it overwhelming to answer questions on the spot. Nonetheless, you can make your visit beneficial and efficient if you take a few minutes to address these questions and bring to your next appointment. ▸▸ Location – Where is the pain localized? Can you point with your finger to identify a location or is it non-specific and diffuse? ▸▸ Modifying factors – what makes the pain better? What makes it worse? Does eating food minimize your pain? Is your pain worsened with movement? Is your pain linked to your menstrual cycle? Does urinating affect pain? Does your pain worsen or improve with passing stools? These factors can help determine if your pain is arising from your intestines, bladder or uterus/ovary, etc. ▸▸ Novelty – Is the pain acute or is this pain occurring for a longer period of time? Has there been a period of time where you were pain-free? ▸▸ Onset – When did the pain start? ▸▸ Precipitating factors – What caused the pain? Any trauma or strenuous activity? ▸▸ Quality – Is it sharp, dull, throbbing, dull? Is the pain persistent or intermittent? Is your pain daily or only at certain times of the day or week? ▸▸ Radiation – Does the pain travel to any other part of your body? ▸▸ Severity Score – On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your pain? Does the pain fluctuate during the day? ▸▸ Therapies / Tests completed – What imaging tests have you completed in the past? It would be useful to bring copies of imaging reports to your appointment for your physician to review and to compare against newer tests. If there were medications prescribed previously, did it help reduce your abdominal pain?

ASK THE SHERIFF

Committed to Protecting Broward Schools BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY Public safety has always been my highest priority. In the eight months since becoming your sheriff, the Broward Sheriff’s Office has worked hard to address one of the greatest concerns of Broward County – school safety. BSO deputies have undergone intensive training in preparation for any public safety threat. We are working together with the school system to ensure our schools are a safe place to learn for every child in every school. We have made changes, but we will not rest on our accomplishments; we will continue to find better ways to protect our schools. In response to the recommendations of the MSD Commission, we introduced new proactive initiatives throughout BSO. We forged federal partnership agreements with the FBI, FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security training

P

divisions, focusing on active shooter and rapid response training. We have established a Threat Management Division and improved the way we gather intelligence and respond to potential threats. We now have cutting-edge technology to identify and investigate potentially dangerous threats to our community. An extension of that division is the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), which allows for real-time monitoring and analysis of important investigative information during a critical incident. We also have direct access to video surveillance systems that monitor nearly 10,000 cameras in all Broward County schools. Recently, BSO partnered with SaferWatch, an innovative mobile app that allows users to report non-emergency incidents and crime tips in real time directly to BSO. The app covers more than 440 public, charter and private schools in Broward County and gives students, parents and teachers the ability to submit photos, videos, audio files or text messages anonymously. The information is immediately sent to BSO for appropriate action. It also provides our law enforcement districts with the ability to communicate important real-time information directly with residents. Whether it’s a crime prevention tip, safety alert, traffic advisory or other important information, SaferWatch alerts will be sent directly to your mobile device for immediate notification. I encourage all of our residents to download the free SaferWatch app and subscribe to the BSO district closest to them. Download the app at BrowardAlerts.com. As the new school year approaches, I want to remind our community of some basic safety tips. When driving, approach all crosswalks in and around school areas with caution, and do not text on your cellphone – it’s the law. Observe the posted school zone speed limit. When walking or riding a bike to school, map out the safest route in advance, and always remember to use a crosswalk. For more back-to-school safety tips, please visit sheriff.org/community. Although we have accomplished much these last eight months, we are just getting started. I will never lose sight of our mission: to keep our community – especially our schools – safe. SUCCESS = REWARD You can stay connected by following the sheriff on Twitter @BrowardSheriff or emailing him directly at ask_the_sheriff@sheriff.org.
