id you know there is an election this month? With the country and media so focused on national politics and the federal government’s handling of the coronavirus, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the national economy, it is easy to overlook this month’s primary election. In truth, local elections often have a larger impact on our day-to-day lives than national elections. This month’s primary elections give us the opportunity to select the candidates for Broward Public Schools Board, Florida Senate, Florida Congress, Broward County Sheriff, State Attorney, Broward Public Defender, and a number of circuit judges. The men and women elected to these positions will, in large part, determine how we are policed and protected, and how the state responds to the economic trauma we have endured. The election will be held on August 18th. Early voting begins on August 8th. If you are concerned about coronavirus exposure and have not requested a mail-in ballot, we recommend voting early in the morning during the early voting period. Get out the vote! It is your civic duty and a good thing to do.
Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Community Kitchen Feeds Over 1 Million People with State-of-the-Art Kitchen
F
eeding South Florida recently unveiled its new, state-of-the-art, 5,000-square-foot community kitchen. Although the kitchen is located in Palm Beach County, it will provide meals to nearly 1.3 million people in the four counties that Feeding South Florida serves (Palm Beach, Broward, MiamiDade, and Monroe Counties). The one-of-a-kind community kitchen is a highly anticipated community resource, with years in the making. On Sunday, July 12th, a virtual grand opening celebration took place via Zoom and Facebook Live. Viewers tuned in to view some of South Florida’s favorite chefs using their talents to showcase the kitchen’s full capacity. They prepared the very first meals in the kitchen using nutritious items regularly distributed by Feeding South Florida, converted into unique, savory, and creative dishes that appeal to the whole family. Chef Ralph Pagano of Naked Taco in Coconut Creek, and Chef Randy Fisher of CREaM in Miami hosted the event. The featured chefs were Chef Lindsay Autry of The Regional Kitchen & Public House in West Palm Beach, Chef Allen Susser of Chef Allen’s Consulting in Hollywood, and Chef Timon Balloo of Balloo Restaurant in downtown Miami. “This multi-purpose community kitchen is a vision that Feeding South Florida has had for quite some time, and we are so excited to finally present it to the community,” said Vélez. “This is just the beginning because the kitchen will serve the community by providing meals, workforce training, catering as social innovation, an incubator for community support, and family cooking classes.” The kitchen will advance Feeding South Florida’s mission of ending hunger in South Florida by serving up to 10,000 meals per day for children’s after-school and summer programs, meals for older adults, and medically tailored meals. The kitchen will also provide critical meals during disaster response. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Feeding South Florida has distributed over 40 million pounds of food (33.3 million meals) in the four counties it serves (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties) in 14 weeks a pace that translates to nearly 150 million pounds over a 12-month period. To put that in perspective, for the entire last fiscal year, Feeding South Florida distributed 62 million pounds (51.6 million meals). Feeding South Florida’s food distributions are updated daily and available at https://feedingsouthflorida.org/covid19/. To find out how you can help, learn about what Feeding South Florida is doing, safety precautions, and much more, visit https://feedingsouthflorida.org/covid19/.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Get State of the Art Air Purification Systems BY JON DUKA
N
ext time there is a competitive game of four-square at the local Boys and Girls Club, the kids might breathe a little bit easier. They won’t breath easier because the game will be less intense. They will breathe easier because the air they are breathing will be much cleaner. A group of local businesses, led by Air Conditioning Contractor, Air Pros USA,

donated and installed 150 Fresh-Aire UV light systems at 11 Boys and Girls Clubs across Broward County. The systems were installed directly into the central air systems by Air Pros USA technicians. UV light technology compliments air conditioning systems to improve indoor air quality by neutralizing viruses and other microbes as the air circulates through the ventilation system. UV light systems are tested and validated against surface bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungus, and have been shown to achieve up to 99.999996% reduction on microorganisms. “The need for quality indoor air is more critical than ever. We are hopeful that our efforts to improve the air in these safe environments will help more families have the confidence to let children return to the clubs and take advantage of their amazing programs,” said Anthony
Perera, founder of Air Pros USA. “We are constantly working to make the clubs safe for children to pursue their passions and this donation gives us peace of mind that we will all be breathing cleaner air as we welcome back kids and teens,” said Matt Organ, co-CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County. “We’re thankful to Anthony and his partners for their generous contributions.” Breath easy, knowing the kids at the local club will be too.

Dancing Together... Six Feet Apart T
hose within our governing bodies consider dance schools to be non-essential businesses. Had any of them been students at Dance Theatre, they might feel differently. Dance Theatre’s 28th season serving South Florida began in typical fashion. All four Broward County locations were teeming with eager young dancers, poised to continue their training under the guidance of it’s amazing staff. The students embarked on their journey and leapt into their training with hopeful vigor. The first several months were funfilled and fantastic. New Years came and went, songs were chosen, and the early stages of preparation for the Annual Recital were underway. Then, in what now seems like the blink of an eye, everyone’s lives changed dramatically. Pursuant to Executive Orders designed to combat Covid-19, like most local businesses, Dance Theatre was forced to close. Classes could no longer be conducted at any of the studios, and the training of it’s thousands of students was suddenly interrupted. What now? What could be done to salvage the season, to keep these kids occupied and exercising, and to restore some measure of normalcy to the lives of it’s students? Dance Theatre’s owner, Michelle Gerlick, knew immediately that something had to be done. “When you’re a dancer, you understand. Dancing is absolutely essential, for both your body and your mind. It keeps you physically fit, it brings you essential moments of peace and tranquility, and it provides a necessary release from the stresses that surround us, especially during times like these. Adults don’t bear the brunt of this pandemic alone. Children have been affected in ways that are every bit, if not more dramatic then their parents. I had to do whatever I could to help them cope.” The immediate solution, much like our public schools, was to adapt to a system of distanced learning through online video conferencing technology. With the help of her entire staff, Michelle quickly set about creating a Zoom account, perfected it’s use, and off they went. Within days, Dance Theatre’s entire schedule was available online, classes were back in session, and their students were able to recapture a bit of the joy that Covid-19 had stolen. While not ideal,

they could see and speak to their teacher, to one another, and they could continue doing one thing they absolutely loved...dancing together. Dance Theatre’s Zoom classes continued throughout April and May, while all four studios underwent modifications to prepare for a time when live classes could resume. Every HVAC unit was equipped with state-of-the-art air cleansing systems, the dance rooms were divided into 6 foot boxes, and viewing systems were installed so that students with health conditions could continue to participate from home via Zoom. “We wanted to provide our students with the safest possible environment upon their return. We’ve gone

way over and above recommended safety measures. Yes...we have no-touch thermometers, gallons of sanitizer, and divided dance floors...but we’ve done numerous other things to keep our kids safe. No expense, and no amount of time or effort is too great when it comes to safeguarding the health of our Dance Theatre families. They take care of us. We take care of them. That’s how it’s always been, and that’s how it will continue to be.” On June 8th, after nearly three months of conducting classes exclusively online, Dance Theatre was allowed to resume studio classes. “We began with a substantially reduced schedule, primarily for older students who understand the importance of following the rules of this “new normal”, Michelle points out. “When conditions improve, hopefully by the start of our Fall season in late August or early September, we will welcome back all of our students, of every age, even if class sizes must be reduced in order to maintain safety. We will also continue to offer all classes via
Zoom for any students who choose to continue from home. Our kids and their families have been in our thoughts and prayers each and every day, and we can’t wait to see them all again soon.” For those of you interested in joining Dance Theatre, you can go to their website www. dancetheatre.net, view the Fall schedule for the location nearest you, and register on-line. Or call for details: Parkland (954) 427-7217, Heron Bay (954) 340-1544, Southwest Ranches (954) 434-4443, Plantation (9540 423-4500.
Dancers that aren’t ready to return to the studio just yet will be able to continue dancing from home via Zoom.

World Class Auto Repairs Offers Dealership Alternative in West Boca BY JON DUKA
Auto repair industry veterans, Jeff and Tina Kranitz, opened their newest venture, World Class Auto Repair Center on Glades Road in Boca Raton in February. The couple has more than 30 years’ experience locally in the auto repair business. We had a chance to tour the facility while getting an oil change. The clean, modern workspace offers a
welcome alternative to expensive dealership repair and maintenance centers. The Kranitz’s aim for perfection was clearly evident with our speedy service. They built their business on the belief that repairs provided honestly, professionally, and quickly will lead to customer loyalty. It shows. “We fix it right the first time,” said owner Jeff Kranitz. “All of our staff members are A.S.E. Certified mechanics and use factory grade tools. We carry a full inventory of factory original parts…and top brand tires. We run state-ofthe-art service department staff.” With the added benefit using “ALL DATA” brand software, World Class Auto’s computer database includes all automobiles and SUV’s. Their technicians can efficiently respond to any problem whatsoever. “ALL DATA” has the support and technical information to assist in the diagnosis and repair of virtually any vehicles.

Whether it is a simple oil change or indecipherable flashing lights or a transmission rehaul, Kranitz’s team can fix it. Immediately identifying the problem gives customers confidence that their vehicles are in good hands. The repair facility has 15 service bays to accommodate incoming vehicles. By using the “ALL DATA” software system, Jeff’s staff can restore automobiles in much less time compared to other facilities that have not implemented “ALL DATA” software. World Class Auto’s repairs come with a warranty on parts and labor. They also offer courtesy transportation to your home or office within a five-mile radius. World Class Auto Repair Center continuously improves its work process to achieve the utmost in customer satisfaction. It is an authorized Bosch Dealer and is certified to service any type of vehicle. In addition, they specialize in European made vehicles by implementing “factory services” and we accept all extended warranties. World Class Auto Repair Center is located at the Shadowood Plaza at 9787 Glades Road on the Northeast corner of Highway 441 and Glades Road. 5 Easy Things Families Can Do to Save the Ocean ALISHA OBER, FOUNDER OF SEVEN SEAS ILLUSTRATION
T
he ocean is a wonderful place to explore! Not only is it fun and fascinating, but learning about the ocean helps us to develop care and concern for it as well. Did you know: The ocean covers 71 percent of our planet and amazing new creatures are being discovered every day. It is thought that an estimated 50-80 percent of all life that is found on earth is under the ocean’s surface and it contains 99 percent of the living space on the planet. And yet less than 10 percent of that space has been explored by humans. Isn’t that amazing? Whether you live by the coast or you’re miles from the nearest ocean, there are still things families can do to protect a favorite beach and the animals that call it home. Volunteer for a Beach Cleanup Recruit volunteers- even if it’s just your friends and family- and clean up a local beach, lake, river, stream, or wetland. By spending part of a day picking up litter, we realize the trash in our local water sources will eventually make its way to the ocean. Reduce Your Use of Plastic This is the most threatening issue in our oceans: Most of the trash picked up on shores is plastic, which harms sea animals. Turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, birds get entangled in fishing line, and animals get stuck in plastic wrappings. Trade in those plastic water bottles in favor of reusable tumblers with lids. Reduce Your Energy Use Climate change is linked to sea level rise and ocean acidification, both of which could drastically affect marine ecosystems. By energy-proofing your home, making sure to insulate properly, keeping your heating and cooling system maintained, and switching to energy efficient light bulbs you’ll help reduce the effects of climate change, and save some money in the process! Eat Sustainable seafood Another way to help the ocean is by paying attention to where your seafood comes from. Overfishing is a global problem, and many common fishing and farming methods result in major habitat damage. One of the simplest things you can do is ask your local grocery stores and restaurants if they sell sustainable seafood. If consumers make it known

that sustainable food is what they are going to buy, eventually that is what stores will sell! Share with friends One person can make a difference, but think how much greater an impact you’ll have if you recruit your friends to the cause! Tell your friends about the issues and use your social media platforms to raise awareness. About The goal of Seven Seas Illustration is to create beautiful and whimsical illustrations of creatures from the seven seas for children and adults with a conservation twist. Learning about the many species, such as where they live and what they eat, is a great way to understand their place in the chain of life and how we can help them thrive. Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Parenting Plans/ BRODZKI Time-Sharing Agreements: JACOBS What You Need to Know www.bjblawyers.com
24 AUGUST 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
BY NANCY K. BRODZKI, ESQ. he COVID-19 virus took the world by storm and has unexpectedly worked its way into our everyday lives, creating new challenges for co-parenting families. This article will discuss some hurdles many families are facing and how to overcome them. With schools being closed for the foreseeable future, public gatherings being restricted, and many people losing employment, parents must co-parent effectively in times of disruption without violating Court orders. The rapid onset of restrictions and recommendations regarding the pandemic is especially troubling for parents whose children travel between two households. This crisis is affecting everything, from daily decision-making for the children, to time sharing schedules, to ability to pay child support. Now more than ever, it is important for parents to communicate effectively and cooperate with each other in order to maximize the best interests of the children. So what should you do if disagreements regarding the children arise? Parents should always adhere to the current Court order set in place, but also be flexible and reasonable when working out time-sharing and exchange changes with the other parent. Parents must also use common sense and must not endanger the health and safety of their children. Parents who have tested positive for COVID-19 or who have been exposed to someone with the virus are in no position to demand the time-sharing schedule be followed. Judges have made it clear that they will put the health of children first. Many jurisdictions, including the tri-county area of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, are under a shelter-in-place order with few exceptions. This does not mean that your children should not be exchanged between local households. But it does mean that children are not going to be put on airplanes or trains to travel to a distant parent. Make-up time-sharing should be offered to any parent missing out on time with their children because of this pandemic. If the children are out of school and it is “your day” per the parenting plan, it is your responsibility to arrange for childcare or e-schooling. Until there is a Final Judgment of Modification entered by the Court, the regular parenting plan schedule applies, and you should always default to that schedule if you cannot agree to alternate arrangements. While all parents should follow the CDC, local and state guidelines regarding protecting your health and the health of your children, it is important to note and accept that you cannot control the other parent and force them to abide by the rules being followed in your household. It is important to have open, reasonable and respectful discussions with the other parent, always remembering that any action taken today will likely have consequences tomorrow. Communicating with the other parent, coordinating your schedules, adjusting pick up times or places, and working together to adjust to the changes in your routine is the best way to do the right thing for your child and stay out of Court. Communication, flexibility, compromise, and a united motive to act in the best interest of your child is the key to avoiding unnecessary conflict. If all attempts at respectful communication and amicable agreements fail, there are still legal routes to pursue. Motions to enforce or modify the parenting plan can be filed. Substantial changes in circumstances, such as loss of employment, can trigger the need to modify your parenting plan and/or child support. This is all uncharted legal territory and only time will tell how Courts will decide these issues moving forward, but Brodzki Jacobs is here to give expert advice and guide you through these challenging times. Uncertainty around COVID-19 is unsettling but our team is up and running with our extensive use of technology and 100% ready to serve you and your legal needs.

LISTENING. EVOLVING. CHANGING. BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY his year, our nation – our world – has been faced with unprecedented challenges. From a global health crisis to civil unrest and the reminder of inequalities for people of color, our strength, our faith, and our will have all been tested. As we enter the eighth month of 2020, I gain strength from the opportunities before us. The opportunity to listen. To grow. To mend. And to change. In the last 18 months, I have made significant changes that focus on building stronger community relationships and restoring trust by bringing accountability and transparency to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. I have revised policy to establish a Use of Force Review Board, appointed new members to the Professional Standards Committee, established progressive training protocols and improved recruitment practices to ensure we are hiring the most qualified applicants. Despite these advancements, we must do more. Recently, I’ve had several opportunities to sit down with community leaders and advocates for change to listen to their concerns and discuss areas of strength and opportunities for growth. Our dialogues were progressive, and the BSO command staff and I welcomed their input. The focus of our discussions was on policing practices. Today, law enforcement remains the only branch of government that is required to respond to every situation where there is an immediate need or threat. Often, these needs are met by people in crisis, who are hurting, who have been wronged, are suffering or have been defrauded. Our deputies are trained in conflict resolution and de-escalation; the majority (soon to be all) are trained in crisis intervention. Yet, as a profession, our policing approaches must continue to evolve. Since becoming sheriff, I have made a commitment to investing resources in areas where they are needed most. Aside from the aforementioned changes, I have restructured the Law Enforcement Trust Fund process to ensure it is more fair and equitable to serve nonprofit organizations that focus on issues vital to our community. We have established the BSO Legacy Program offering scholarships and internships to minority individuals interested in a career in public safety. We have established a Youth Mentorship Program focused on mentoring youth and developing them into strong, responsible civically-engaged adults. Change will not come overnight. However, these changes are just the beginning of establishing systemic solutions toward a more unified Broward. I will continue to make progressive changes for the benefit of this community. At BSO, we are listening. We are evolving. We are prioritizing the needs of the people we serve. And we are committed to working together with you to maintain trust and strengthen our community.

POSITIVE PARENTING
A Parent’s Guide to Successful Online Learning BY CASSANDRA FIELDS
O
n July 20th, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Rucie recommended that all Broward students begin the year with online learning only. “If conditions do not improve and continue to worsen, that is the only way we can educate our students while keeping them and our teachers healthy and safe,” Rucie commented, during the 8-minute address. It is almost certain that part or all of every student’s course work at the beginning of the school year will consist of at-home, online studies. We surveyed experts to find best practices to ensure your student will be as successful as possible. Here is what they recommend. 1. Location, Location, Location It is important to establish a consistent routine for your child’s work. Roaming around the house with a laptop or taking ZOOM classroom instruction at the park may seem like fun, but a lack of consistency can lead to distraction. Have your student use the same, quiet place for his/her work each day. 2. Schedule Priorities Maintaining a regular schedule is critical in establishing a healthy learning routine. Like, having a consistent location, “going to school” at the same time each day reinforces the importance of learning. 3. Say No to Phones Perhaps the biggest challenge parents face with online learning is the fact that the primary tool kids use to learn can also be their biggest distraction. Anything connected to the web can be a source of constant distraction. The dopamine feedback mechanisms students get from social media fuel their yearning for more, just like an addiction. Unless your student needs his phone for the coursework at hand, it is best to take it into a different room 4. Inspect, Don’t Expect Unless your child is incredibly organized, mature, and goal-oriented, it will be extremely difficult for her to stay on track remotely. The ever-present guidance of an involved-teacher simply won’t be there. Parents must be more engaged with their children’s coursework today than ever before. The good news is, most schools online tools available for parents to track their kids’ progress in real-time. It’s a good idea to review your student’s work on a weekly basis, or more often. 5. Open Lines of Communication Our “new normal” of education is new to teachers too. More than ever they will need candid, frequent feedback from parents. Make it your mission to have two-way communication on how things are going, and how your child is performing. During these times of great uncertainty it’s our duty as parents to make sure our children don’t lose this precious learning time. Hopefully, by the end of the year, our kids will be back in school full-time. 28 AUGUST 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: PARKLAND
August Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY his month in Broward we have elections. Many people have reached out to me to try and understand which elections they are able to vote in and what seats are up and when, so here is some information that I hope will help. The August 18 election is considered a primary election, but several seats will be decided on this date. For non-partisan races such as judges and school board, whichever candidate receives more than 50% of total votes cast will be the winner of the race. If no one receives more than 50% of the total votes cast, the two candidates with the most votes will have a runoff in November. In partisan races, the primary is in August and the general is in November. If no opposing party candidate or write in candidate enters the race, the primary is an open primary and all voters, regardless of party affiliation, can vote in the race. If there is an opposing party candidate or a write in candidate in the race, the primary is closed and only voters with the same party affiliation as the primary candidates can vote in that race. All voters, regardless of party affiliation, can vote in all races in November. What does all this mean? It means you should register to vote, verify your voting information is accurate, and do your homework on candidates and races. Since some races are determined in August and others are determined in November, it is important to vote in every election. Additionally, some municipalities (not Parkland) also have March elections that determine mayor and commission races. Also, you can view a sample ballot online or request a vote by mail ballot by visiting the Supervisor of Elections website at www.browardsoe.org . The website also has a list of all early voting sites and general election sites. Early voting takes place from August 8-16. Early voting hours are from 11am-7pm Monday through Friday and from 9am-5pm Saturdays and Sunday. Primary Election Day is August 18 and the polls are open from 7am-7pm. On a separate note, the city manager’s proposed city budget for the 2020/2021 fiscal year is now online at ww.cityofparkland.org/budget. Please take time to review the budget and submit your comments online. Currently a resident budget workshop is planned for August 12 at 6:00pm and a commission (open to the public) budget workshop is planned for August 19 at 5:00pm. The budget is not final until our two budget hearings in September are completed. The budget hearings are all open to the public. Please always feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have. I look forward to hearing from you.

uring the last several months, so much has taken place in our nation, state and here locally in Coral Springs. We never imagined we would approach our “Back to School” season and still face COVID-19 as a global health issue; yet, here we are. We are stepping into August with an unfortunate rise in positive cases in the State of Florida; these numbers showcase how critical it is for residents and businesses to comply with Emergency Orders in order to mitigate the spread of this virus. We remind the community to follow CDC guidelines, stay informed with all Broward County Emergency Orders, and be vigilant when leaving your homes. Mark your calendars because the primary election in Florida is on August 18th! As citizens of the land of the free, it is our duty to safeguard our democracy and express our right to vote. If you are not a registered voter, you may still register to vote for the general election and can do so online at www. RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov. For more information visit www.browardsoe.org. The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season is expected to be busier than in previous years. It is important for our community to be prepared beforehand to stay safe. Here are tips to ensure you and your family are prepared for this year’s hurricane season: ▸ Make an emergency plan that includes your evacuation zone and make sure all members of your household know and understand the hurricane plan. ▸ Gather supplies ahead of time including medication, disinfectant supplies, cloth face coverings, pet supplies, and anything else you consider to be essential. ▸ Strengthen your home by decluttering drains and gutters, bring the outside furniture inside, and consider investing in hurricane shutters. For more details on how to properly prepare for hurricanes, please visit www.ready.gov/hurricanes. Stay tuned and up to date by visiting www.coralsprings.org, following our social media accounts and make sure to text the keyword CORALSPRINGS to 888-777 for important updates. Our August Commission Meeting will take place virtually on the 5th at 9:00 a.m., and the 19th at 6:30 p.m.; residents are invited to watch and offer public comment. Meetings are aired on CityTV, Blue Stream Channels 25, 25.2, 725 and on AT&T U-Verse channel 99. Meetings are also live streamed. As always, if you would like to schedule an appointment with any of your City Officials, please call 954- 344-5911. .

He is 10. My son, Matt, rescued Ziggy while in college in Boise, Idaho. Ziggy is our grand puppy, so of course, he is perfect. He stays with us when his “daddy” is away for work. He chases everything in our yard. His favorite person other than Matt is his “Uncle” JD, who is in third grade. Ziggy loves to sweep the kitchen floor after we eat. He also likes peanut butter and treats. Ziggy thinks he is a lap dog and loves to sit on the couch with us and watch TV.
