It’s Election Time
T
he Florida Primary Election was on August 28th. We hope you joined us in voting. We feel lucky to live in a country where every citizen has the right to vote, regardless of age, sex or economic standing. According to the Freedom House’s Freedom in the World 2018 report, more than 60% of people on earth live in countries without these basic freedoms. Unfortunately, by some standards, freedom is becoming more constrained here in the United States. There are many important issues at all levels of government today. We can decide whether to change the direction of our country or keep it the same. The easiest and best way to ensure we retain our personal and economic liberty is to participate in elections. Each of us can make an equal impact on how our country, state, county and city is governed, regardless if you are a Democrat or Republican, or a liberal or a conservative.

9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit comes to Coral Springs BY NICOL JENKINS
T
he City of Coral Springs wants to make sure its residents and visitors: ‘Never Forget’. The 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit is making a stop in Coral Springs as a reminder of those heroes who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Launched in 2013 by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit, which is housed in a 1,000 square foot trailer is a tribute and educational tool that travels across the country. The exhibit will visit Coral Springs for residents and students on September 11 and 12, 2018. The exhibit serves as a tribute to all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, including, the 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice. The exhibit provides interactive education; including artifacts such as steel beams from the towers,
? P E LE S ’T N CA
documentary videos, and recordings of first responder radio transmissions. Interactive guided tours are carried out by FDNY firefighters who provide firsthand accounts of the day and its aftermath. The exhibit will be located in the parking area between the Public Safety Building and Coral Springs Gymnasium, located at 2601 Coral Springs Drive. Students from Coral Springs schools will visit the exhibit each morning, with public viewing on 9/11 from 2 to 8 p.m. and on 9/12 from 4 to 8 p.m. “This is the first time we are welcoming the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit to our City. The terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001 left an indelible mark upon our nation and its history. In the aftermath of such tragedy came renewed faith in preserving the memory and actions of those who lost their lives on that day,” said Lynne Martzall, Media
Relations Coordinator for the City of Coral Springs. Our City’s Police and Fire Pension Administrator Gina Orlando, who once worked on the 98th floor of the World Trade Center, has been involved in 9/11 based education and fundraisers since the attacks and secured the exhibit for residents and students for September 11 and 12, 2018. Of the exhibit, Gina says, “Look at all of the good that can come from such tragedy. The attacks on 9/11 showed how our communities can come together to heal, promote volunteerism and help others.” When asked why it’s important to ‘Never Forget’ 9/11, Martzall responded, “Many of the students who will visit the exhibit were not even born when the terrorist attacks of 9/11 took place. It is so important to remember the first responders and innocent civilians who lost their lives on that tragic day and preserve their memory.” n Additional details about the mobile exhibit’s ceremonial arrival, our 9/11 memorial service and ticket reservations (the exhibit is free) are located at coralsprings.org/events. Residents are encouraged to text 888-777 with the key word – 911EXHIBIT.

We perform minimally invasive, cutting edge vein procedures and offer a variety of non-ablative laser techniques. We get rid of unwanted varicose and spider veins and help people’s legs with swelling, aching, heaviness. It also works well at smoothing wrinkles, erasing acne scars and other scars. In a matter of minutes, the Picoway can smooth wrinkles, build collage and remove discolorations and refine scars. Describe your (Dr. Fox) experience. I (Dr. Fox) trained at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. I started the first Vascular Medicine Department and Vein Center at University Hospital’s Before Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. I have been featured as a vein and laser expert nationally and internationally, and have been on multiple news programs in America After and Latin America. Fox Vein and Laser Experts has served as a training facility for multiple national corporations. Why should patients visit Fox Vein and Laser Experts vs. other practices? We are recognized experts in the field of vein disease and lasers. We have certified ultrasonographers that provide in depth vascular exams and offer excellent care and service to our patients. I was one of the first physicians to perform Endovenous Laser Ablations in Ohio and nationally. I was one of the first in Florida to perform Clarivein procedures and have been performing ultrasound
guided sclerotherapy and foam for decades. Describe some of the procedures you offer? We offer the newest and best miniammly invasive vein procedures, including Endvenous laser Ablation, Venaseal, Veingogh, Laser spider vein removal, Phlebectomies, Foam sclerotherapy and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy. Most of these procedures are performed in under 30 minutes with often no incisions necessary to remove those unsightly veins. We also offer hair removal, spot removal and spider vein removal with the Gentle Max Pro laser. This is one of the best and fastest lasers on the market to remove unwanted hair on any skin color. We also offer tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation with the Picoway Laser. This laser removes tattoos much faster than others on the market and uses vibrational energy to shatter the ink particles, so the ink goes away much faster than other nano lasers. Resolve by Picoway shrinks pores, tightens skin, erases acne scars and sun spots and discolorations while building collagen with little to no down time. It is literally a lunchtime make over. Where are the procedures performed? All vein procedures are done in the office, most in less than 30 minutes. We can get rid of those large varicose veins, and pain and swelling, during your lunch break. What is vein disease and how does it progress? Veins are blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart. When the valves in the veins are not working correctly, instead of all the blood going back to the heart, some drips slowly downward causing the blood to pool and the legs to feel heavy, achy and
Diagnosis and & Laser Procedures tired. The legs start to look more and more discolored and more veins appear and the ankles start to turn blue and brown. Over time, the ankles swell and the skin scars down and hardens. The veins bulge more and more, and more skin changes occur. Venous eczema develops and gradually people can get lipodermatosclerosis, atrophie blanche and ulcers. Bleeding veins are also a problem, and the bleeding is very difficult to control. What should people do about
Before
After
vein disease? Patients should call for a consultation and have an ultrasound to diagnose the source of their vein problems. Until the appointment, patients should elevate their legs, wear compression hose, and take antiinflammatories for their pain. Why do people remove tattoos? People are often very excited when they get a tattoo. However, over time, this happiness can fade. Having the reminder of an ex or something that one is no longer involved with is not appealing. Many times, people want to climb the corporate ladder and various companies have policies about covering or removing tattoos in visible areas. Some people want
more space for more ink. Some tattoos are done wrong and people are not happy from the beginning. Whatever the reason for removal, Picoway laser is the best tattoo removal laser out there. It removes all colors of ink on any skin type faster and better. It removes the tattoos in fewer treatment sessions and with less pain than other lasers. What else is Picoway used for besides tattoos? Resolve by Picoway is used to remove skin discolorations with aging. It helps build collagen, fade sun spots, refine pores, tighten skin and reduce wrinkles. It is also used to fade spots and help tighten and refine the décolleté and people’s hands. It is FDA approved for the removal of acne scars and can help fade and refine scars of all types especially after breast augmentation, C-sections and tummy tucks. Picoway is fast, effective and has really no down time. You look amazing almost immediately. What does the Gentle Max Pro Laser do? It can remove spider veins, sun spots or discolorations, and is amazing at removing unwanted hair. It has one of the largest spot sizes on the market and can remove hair super fast with little to no pain on every skin color. As well, it works great for laser facials and building collagen.

That’s Amore… Experience Italian culture at the International Dinner Dance BY NICOL JENKINS
I
ndulge in the tastes and sounds of Italy without leaving your City! Join your neighbors as the City of Coral Springs brings Italian culture and food to your community. The signature annual International Dinner Dan ce will be held on Saturday, September 15th at 7 pm at the Coral Springs Marriott at Heron Bay, 11775 Heron Bay Boulevard. This event, which is hosted by the Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee, highlights a different country each year allowing guests to travel around the world without leaving Coral Springs. This year, they are pleased to offer attendees the cuisine and culture of the country of Italy at Bella Notte in Italia –
That’s Amore! The event starts with cocktail hour where guests can sample the country’s signature drink. At this time, guests will be entertained by costumed characters from traditional Italian customs and history. Later in the evening, there will be a lavish buffet of traditional Italian cuisine, and a live show featuring an Italian comedian/impersonator bringing familiar characters to life. The finale to the entertainment section will be a dance from the Tarantella dancers who will interact with the audience and demonstrate some dance routines. Finally, the deejay will open up the dance floor for the dancing pleasure of the guests. More than 20 years ago, the International Dinner Dance was created as one of the cultural events hosted by the City’s Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee. “It was seen as an opportunity for our residents to learn about different cultures without ever leaving Coral Springs – by way of cuisine, music, and entertainment. It was also intended to encourage harmonious interaction among different ethnic groups in a fun, social setting,” said Lydia Cutz, Community Relations
Coordinator for the City of Coral Springs. The mission of the event is “to offer our neighbors a “Trip Around the World” without leaving Coral Springs; we like to stress that this event is not a fundraiser, but a community event- a way to bring our community together to learn about and celebrate the various world cultures.” The community has enjoyed being able to immerse themselves in a different culture through sampling that country’s cuisine, music, customs and more. “We have found that this event is popular because it draws people from all backgrounds to meet socially and enjoy each other’s company,” added Cutz. Get your tickets for a cultural event you won’t want to miss! The $60 ticket will include a variety of hors d’oeuvres, an authentic Italian buffet, complimentary dinner wine, an entertaining live show, and an opportunity to dance the night away to the sounds of international music. Although it’s not essential, guests are encouraged to wear international attire to lend even more of a flair to the event. Tickets are limited and will not be sold at the door. Where Do I Begin?

hen planning a wedding or any other special event such a Bar/Bar Mitzvah, Sweet Sixteen, or Quinceañera, so many decisions must be made. It's only natural for most people to start asking many questions. They usually start out simple...

Which DJ/band keeps guests dancing all night long? Who is the "it" emcee? What venue can hold 200+ people? Does the photographer work well with children? More importantly, does the photographer know how to use Photoshop? Do people really eat duck pate? Are pigs in a blanket so 1980? How do I make sure my guests arrive on time? Which are more popular – roses or peonies? What liquor should I serve in the ice luge? Why do I need to know about lighting? How much is my budget? Do I really need one? 26 SEPTEMBER 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

What's good for one, may in fact, not be good for another. Word of mouth is one of the best assets available, as it's good to hear a great review like going to a movie or a restaurant. One should also do their own research by reading testimonials, asking their own questions and listening to their trusted event planner if they have one. At the end of the day, it's your event and you should do what you are comfortable with. Besides verbal recognition and testimonials, look at their work. Does their style match yours? Are they going to "get you"? Watch videos, see photography samples, listen to the emcee/band and look at decor samples. Most importantly, meet them for yourself. When hiring, keep in mind that you are entering a relationship of sorts, so you want to like who you are hiring. "Personality over price" is usually the way to go. At some point in the planning process, you will be spending much time with these individuals. You should "click" with your photographer, "jive" with your emcee/band and of course, "love" your wedding planner.

ASK THE RABBI
Temple BeTh Torah Sha’aray Tzedek
The Proper Path BY RABBI MICHAEL GOLD y favorite scene in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland is when Alice meets the Cheshire Cat, the cat who disappears leaving only a smile. Alice asks the cat, “Pussy, which way should I go?” The cat replies, “Where are you trying to get to?” Alice says, “I do not know where I am trying to get to.” The cat then says, “Then it does not matter which way you go.” If we do not know where we are trying to get to, it does not matter which way we go. So many of us today have no idea where we are trying to go. We go through life taking the path of least resistance; we move forward at random; we feel lost. Some religious leaders teach that it does not really matter which we go. I have heard New Age spiritual gurus say, “Whatever path you are on, that is the path you are meant to be in. You are exactly where you are meant to be.” One of the fundamental teachings of Judaism that there is a proper path, a direction we ought to go. This is true in every area of our lives. There is a proper path towards physical well-being and how we care for our bodies. There is a proper path for our relationships with our families and the other important people in our lives. There is a proper path in terms of our financial lives - how we earn and how we spend money. There is a proper path regarding our ethical lives - how we behave towards other people. And there is a proper path regarding our spiritual lives - how we relate to our faith and our traditions. Another fundamental teaching of Judaism is that at least in some areas of our lives we all go down the wrong path. Whether our physical selves, our relationships, our finances, our ethics, or our spiritual lives, there are areas where, as every GPS says, we need to recalculate. In fact, I have often told people, half tongue and cheek, that if they have been perfect this past year they are permitted not to fast on Yom Kippur. None of us is perfect. We all have areas where we need to make adjustments.

A third fundamental teaching of our faith is that change is possible. We are not stuck on the wrong path. No matter how long we have been going in the wrong direction, it is possible to switch directions and change our ways. Certainly, the longer we have been going the wrong way, the harder it is to switch directions. The Rabbis teach that the evil inclination is first like a spider web, then like a heaven rope. It is easier to get out from a spider web than a heavy rope. But it can be done. We can change. The key word for the High Holiday season is a teshuvah, often translated “repentance,” but a word that really means “return.” It means a return to the correct path. The holidays are the time to focus on returning to that path. But unlike Alice, we first need to know what path we ought to go on. The fundamental question each of us needs to ask at this time is the same one Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, “Which way should I go?” Rabbi Michael Gold PhD serves as spiritual leader of Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek in Tamarac, FL. possible experience when visiting,” said Julia Andrews, Executive Director of the Coral Springs Museum of Art. The mission of the Coral Springs Museum of Art is “to engage our diverse communities with dynamic exhibits, exceptional art education, stimulating specialty programs and inspired events to ignite cultural enrichment.” What began late in 1996 as a City project to build a comprehensive recreation and community center, soon turned into The Coral Springs Center for the Arts – a performance theater and art museum. Housed in the impressive 30,000 square foot Center for the Arts building is the equally impressive Coral Springs Museum of Art, which was incorporated in January of 1997. Over the 20-year history, the Museum is proud to have touched the lives of, and inspired, over a half a million people through its endless and significant visual art offerings- and now with their new renovations. The sophisticated elegance of the Coral Springs Museum of Art will be enhanced by the mystical, highly technical art works created by artist Daniel Winn. Winn’s exhibition, titled Metamorphosis, will be on display from September 29th through November 17, 2018. Winn’s goal with “Existential Surrealism” is to explore
the basic nature of human existence and examine the relationship between free will and providence, between self-determination and the universal plan. The works are predominately figurative as it is inherently focused on the human experience, but also incorporates abstract and even mythological elements to communicate the divinity of creation. Winn draws upon his own life experiences, surreal in themselves, his ancestral culture and the contemporary influences of the culture and nation, which he has called home since escaping war-torn Vietnam in 1975. Guests can meet the artist and learn about his works during a reception in his honor held at the Museum on October 11th. Admission is complimentary. The newly refurbished museum will be available for private parties, corporate events, weddings and celebrations. With the new renovations, the Coral Springs Museum of Art has the perfect look for any special event or occasion! Parkland Library makes Learning Fun and Hip BY NICOL JENKINS

f you haven’t visited your local library in awhile, you may think it’s outdated. However, the common notion that libraries are antiquated isn’t true. They are now offering technology, eBooks, guest speakers, monthly events and much more. The Parkland Library is providing a plethora of activities to make learning fun and hip for youth. “The Parkland Library is a great place for families because it’s close to home and helps create that small town feeling that people love about Parkland,” said Rhonda Weiss, Program Specialist for the Parkland Library. “There are books, including eBooks, DVDs and activities for people of all ages. And it’s all free with a Parkland Library card.” Weiss hopes more residents will discover the many activities offered at the local library. “We hope to have people come for activities and then look around and see all the other wonderful resources we have here. We’d love for all residents of Parkland to get library cards and become lifelong library users,” she said. The Library will host many informative and fun events during the month of September. Making It As Nice As Possible For Babies And Mom’s… BY JOHN A. BRODIE
I
t will still likely be a couple of weeks until the first baby will be born in “Maternity Place” at Broward Health’s Coral Springs Hospital. Our City Media got an early peak into the “next level of healthcare” at the hospital’s new state-of-the-art $65 million patient tower expansion. The focus of the expansion on the first and second floors is on providing the very best neonatal and maternity care available. The third floor expands Broward Health’s surgical capabilities with a big investment in robotic equipment that can dramatically streamline procedures and result in more speedy recovery, decreases in pain and loss of blood with less scaring and chance of infection. A fourth floor has yet to be built out and it will be developed based on the needs of the growing local community. The big take away from the tour of the new maternity floors today was the tremendous attention given
36 SEPTEMBER 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
to creating a comfortable and pleasant experience for patients and those involved in their care and recovery. The first floor offers 12 private and spacious birthing suites that provide openness and natural light with floor to ceiling windows. They each have customizable interior lighting and temperature controls with extra space for family members. Dad’s even get a comfortable recliner to sleep in if they want to stay the night. The facility is also set up to allow water births. Private triage and recovery rooms are available along with three Cesarean section operating suites. The second floor provides 28 private and spa-like mother and baby post-partum rooms. Ten private Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit rooms are just steps away from mom’s suite making this probably the best place in the world for those babies born weeks or even months too early. With a clear focus on caring for early births – both baby and mother – we have Arlene Boykin, MD. She is a Neonatologist and Chair of the “Kids 2 Campaign” which has been the driving force helping to raise money for this expansion. This has been a development project of the Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health Coral Springs that has been providing the very best in area pediatric care (for
those newborns as they get a little older). Dr. Boykin has a clear passion for providing a safe, welcoming environment for newborns to start their lives while making the new mother’s as comfortable as possible. The rooms offer patient and family privacy, less noise and allow mother’s to be in the same room with their baby even if the newborn needs to be in a temperature controlled NICU unit while it matures. Dr. Boykin stressed in the tour today the importance the hospital places on promoting
breast feeding for the early and long term health of the baby. While each room provides equipment for storing and warming breast milk, the focus is on encouraging breast feeding and helping mothers become comfortable with the process. Dr. Boykin stated, “The more skin to skin time and breastfeeding a small or sick baby participates in, the healthier the outcome for the baby.” Healthy outcomes for baby and mother are what all the time, money and planning have been about. Coral Springs and the surrounding area should be very appreciative of all the talented and caring people who have made this new facility a reality. If you are interested in learning more about how YOU can help make a difference in the lives of these tiniest of patients, contact Megan Massacci at 954-712-6342 or mmassacci@ browardhealth.org.

Broward County Students Welcomed Back to School BY JON DUKA
T
he nation’s sixth largest school district welcomed students back to school a bit earlier this year on August 15th. Broward County Public Schools’ (BCPS) 270,000+ students returned to school to see new security measures at many schools. Superintendent Robert W. Runcie, commented, “While our shared healing and recovery from the tragedy earlier this year continues, we are committed to coming together and healing as a community. Our mission remains doing everything in our power to provide students and staff with safe and secure learning and working environments.” Runcie, along with the other members of the school board visited many of the schools throughout the district. In the wake of last school year's tragedy, he highlighted several steps BCPS took to enhance safety and security at district schools. The school district, in partnership with local police departments and the Broward County Sheriff's Department will ensure that a certified law enforcement officer or armed guardian is present at every school throughout the school day. Each school will also Maintain a single point of access for the campus. BCPS believes this will allow security personnel to more effectively control who comes and goes from campus throughout the day. Video surveillance systems have been upgraded to ensure real-time monitoring. A renewed focus on safety procedures, including locking classroom doors, gate and exterior door has been a key point of focus in back-to-school training for teachers and other school staff. In addition to tighter security procedures, parents will notice new technology throughout the district. The School system has expanded the capabilities

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Cyberbullying JONATHAN SHAW ACTING POLICE CHIEF, MARGATE POLICE DEPT. ello, my name is Jonathan Shaw and I am the newly appointed Acting Police Chief for the City of Margate. As we embark on the 2018-2019 school year, there will be many important topics that I want to discuss and provide safety tips for; however, I would like to start off this school year talking about something that has become more prevalent to our children in school at all ages, cyberbullying. Whether it takes place on a cell phone, iPad, computer, or any type of social media, cyberbullying exists, and whether you are aware or not, it is taking place on a daily basis. Cyberbullying has no boundaries, it does not just happen in school, it can happen anywhere. Cyberbullying can be hard to identify because it is not visible in a classroom and may not be overheard. In the age that we live in, it is inevitable that our children have multiple means of communication that extend beyond verbal communication or hand written letters. The digital world has taken over and has many facets that we, as a society, have to force ourselves to jump into feet first. As a father of two teenage sons, I rely on cell phones to keep in communication with my family at all times. As a parent, there are many wonderful safety aspects to cell phones and other digital technology, but we have to make sure we monitor our children’s connection to that technology. Cyberbullying means bullying someone through the use of technology or any electronic communication which can include but is not limited to, text messages, social media applications, forums, and gaming sites where people (of all ages) can view, participate or share content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or cruel content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information that causes humiliation. Some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior. The digital world is constantly evolving and growing each day with new social media platforms. As parents, you can work to protect your children from cyberbullying through a variety of ways. Please take a moment to read the helpful tips below that you can use to keep your children safe: ▸▸ Monitor your children’s social media sites, applications and all communication tools through means of technology. ▸▸ Reset your child’s privacy settings on electronic devices and review that you are able to identify his/her phone location. ▸▸ Request your child to be a “friend” and/or “follow” (social media terms) them so that you can have open communication and the ability to view what they are posting as well as what others are posting. You can also see who their “friends” are. ▸▸ Require your child to provide you with their passwords for their email and all, yes, I said ALL, social media platforms. ▸▸ Establish rules for your children in order for them to be able to appropriately use social media. Social media is a privilege, and should be used for communicating and providing an outlet for positivity and friendship. By following these few safety tips, you will be able to communicate and build solid, trusting relationships with your children about social media usage. It is important for children, especially teens, to realize that harmful words, photographs, and postings that are false and/or contain negative content about someone else is taken seriously. Disciplinary actions may be taken by the school, or by law enforcement. Should you have any questions or concerns about cyberbullying, please contact the Margate Police Department at (954) 972-7111. Another great resource is to contact your child’s School Resource Officer. Our police officers and detectives are always happy to answer any questions that you may have. Our Margate Police Department Facebook page (facebook.com/MargateFLPolice) often shares safety tips for navigating social media safely. As we continue to educate our youth (and our parents) about cyberbullying and social media, I encourage you to always try to keep an open mind and open lines of communication between you and your children. We live in a world that moves fast and is constantly changing. Cyberbullying can be occurring in your home without your knowledge, but with awareness and taking the necessary precautions, you can help make a difference in another child’s life, or even save a life.

New Hope for Patients Suffering from Pancreas and Liver Cancer
T
here is NEW HOPE for families of patients undergoing treatment for Pancreas or Liver Cancer. Families that have been told they have no further options can now look into IRE-Nanoknife, a new, minimally invasive, cancer treatment that is showing significant long-term survival. Some Patients have seen a doubling or even tripling of their life expectancy following the procedure, according to recently published reports. During the procedure, fine needle probes are placed throughout the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure no injury to critical structures.
High voltage electrical pulses are then passed through the tumor, killing it. The procedure is preformed, as an outpatient procedure in the operating room, by Dr Robert Donoway, a Sloan Kettering trained Pancreas and Liver Cancer Surgeon and a Pioneer of the technique. Dr. Donoway has been in practice, in South Florida, for over 28 years. He is the former medical director and chairman of the Memorial Health Care and Aventura Hospital Cancer programs and is the former Chief of Surgery at Memorial Regional Hospital. “The procedure is highly effective and kills the tumor almost immediately,” commented Dr. Donoway, “This allows faster resumption of chemotherapy and radiation, leading to faster and better tumor response to those therapies.” Dr Donoway has performed hundreds of the procedures with many of his patients coming from overseas. He is accepting new patients in their offices at 4000 Hollywood
Boulevard, the iconic Presidential Circle building in the heart of Hollywood. For more information visit: theDonowayCenter. com or ATLASOncology.com or visit Dr. Donoway’ s Facebook Pages at: ATLASOncology- the Institute for Pancreas Liver and Advanced Tumor Ablation. To make an appointment contact: Kathryn Anderson, Practice Administrator, at 954-986-6366. Our office is easily reached from Miami/Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Lee Counties at: 4000 Hollywood Boulevard Presidential Circle Suite N-160 Hollywood, Florida (just west of I-95 off Hollywood Boulevard)

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Coral Springs Update
2018
SKIP CAMPBELL, MAYOR
W
ith summer behind us and school back in session – it’s time to turn our attention to the upcoming historical and educational events taking place in the City of Coral Springs. The terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001 left an indelible mark upon our nation and its history. In the aftermath of such tragedy came renewed faith in preserving the memory and actions of those who lost their lives on that day. One of those initiatives is the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit. Launched in 2013 by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the exhibit, which is housed in a 1,000 square foot trailer - is a tribute and educational tool that travels across the country. The exhibit will be located in the parking area between the Public Safety Building and Coral Springs Gymnasium (located at 2601 Coral Springs Drive). Pre-scheduled students from Coral Springs schools will visit the exhibit each morning, with public viewing on September 11th from 2-8 p.m. and September 12th from 4-8 p.m. Additional details about the mobile exhibit’s ceremonial arrival, our 9/11 memorial service and ticket reservations are located at coralsprings. org/events. Have you purchased your tickets to the City’s annual International Dinner Dance - Bella Notte in Italia – That’s Amore – scheduled for Saturday, September 15 at 7 p.m.? Guests will enjoy Italian cuisine, dancing and live entertainment, for more information, call 954-344-1005. While I am looking forward to these events, I am also focused on a serious issue affecting our City and municipalities across the nation – recycling contamination. The City entered into a new contract for recyclable material processing which includes penalties for excessive contamination. I want to ensure our residents and businesses better understand why these changes are in place and how we can work together to make recycling right in Coral Springs. China, the largest overseas market to procure our recyclable material, no longer accepts foreign waste – stating recyclable material from the U.S. and other countries is over-contaminated, resulting in an environmental hazard. The truth is, our recycling has become too wet, dirty and commonly mixed with non-recyclable material – downgrading the value. Under our new processing contract, there is a 10% threshold for contamination. If we are unable to reach that goal, the City will be financially penalized. Understand, Waste Management is the only company to offer a bid to collect our recycling. There were no other options at the conclusion of our contract with Sun Bergeron; and recycling is too important for our environment to simply “stop” and start sending our recyclables to the landfill. Our City chose to lead the way for other municipalities by being the first to accept the new term of this contract and launched an educational campaign for residents and businesses. Less contamination translates to higher market value for our recyclables and reduces the amount of material sent for disposal at a landfill. I urge residents to follow the list of materials that are depicted on the recycling cart lid. Perhaps you can assign a family member to handle recycling for your family. As a reminder, always check your blue cart before putting it out to the curb to ensure all items are approved recyclable materials. Visit coralsprings.org/ recycleright for a list of common contaminants, and for more information on recycling right.
