Will CBD Give You The Relief You Have Been Hoping For? BY JOHN BRODIE

“C

BD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, but the strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications.” -The Harvard Medical School Health Blog Another study demonstrated the mechanism by which CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat. Conditions that may respond favorably to this treatment: ◆ Diabetes ◆ Rheumatoid arthritis ◆ Epilepsy ◆ Antibiotic-resistant infections ◆ Alcoholism ◆ PTSD ◆ Neurological disorders ◆ Alzheimer’s disease ◆ Depression ◆ Menstrual cramps ◆ Migraine headaches I sat down recently with Charles Smith, the Founder of UPS Wellness. After 15 years of marketing tobacco products, he decided it was time to start investing his effort and skills into products that actually help people. After trying CBD to help manage workplace stress and considering CBD’s beneficial effects with no evidence of any negative side effects, Charles became convinced this was the product that he wanted to spend his time and effort marketing and promoting.

Realizing that product integrity and consumer education would be the key to long term success, Charles founded UPS Wellness and sourced a high quality extract from PCR hemp. UPS Wellness CBD is sourced from PCR hemp, not industrial hemp Purified twice (first to remove waxes, chlorophyll, lipids, etc.; second to remove THC) PCR Hemp Oil is an acronym for Phyto-Cannabinoid Rich, a direct reference to the sum total number of cannabinoids found in the oil. It is the purity and strength of the product that determines its effectiveness. All UPS Wellness products are and always will be: Safe, Simple, and Satisfying. The UPS Wellness product is neither the most expensive nor least expensive on the market but Charles’ intent is to provide the highest “value” based on product quality and

dosage amount. To back up his value proposition, there is a 30 day, no questions asked, money back guarantee and US based customer service. “There is no risk in shopping with us.”, he says. Here’s how Charles Smith finished off our conversation: Leaving a comfortable, well paid job with great benefits wasn’t easy but there were really two basic things that drove my decision. First, I know from personal experience that CBD works and I believe in the potential it has to make a positive difference in people’s lives. I decided that if I was going to spend eight hours a day selling something, it had to be something natural and healthy that would help people live happier, more productive lives. That’s our mission at UPS wellness and we’re really looking forward to making that positive difference.

W

e are now a few weeks into the school year and hopefully your family has adjusted to the new routine. This year, three of our kids are attending Broward County Public Schools for the first time. One thing we have noticed here, that is different than their old schools, is that breakfast is offered to all students every day – and it is free for ALL children. The idea behind Universal Free Breakfast is a simple one: kids who eat a nutritious breakfast will be less hungry and, therefore, better able to pay attention throughout the day making them better students. Making the meals free to all students destigmatizes the situation. Economically disadvantaged kids won’t feel prying eyes when eating the free breakfast and, therefore, will be more likely to eat it. In practice, this is exactly what happens. According to the Food Research & Action Center, children who attend schools that serve universal breakfasts have lower rates of obesity, fewer visits to the school nurse, better behavior, better attendance, less tardiness, and, you guessed it, better test scores, by 17.5%. In fact, students with access to a healthy breakfast are 20% more likely to graduate from high school than those who don’t. So, make sure your children make it to the bus stop on time or get to school a couple minutes early so they can join their friends for breakfast. And tell them to eat up – their education is counting on it.

COULD I WRITE THIS INTERVIEW FOR “OUR CITY” IN TWO DAYS?

BY EMILY B. LAWRENCE

Ray asked over Bluetooth. His six-year-old son, Luke, sat behind him in the car. “Okay,” I said.

I wanted every student to see the genius within themselves, so they could become great learners and thinkers, and not be dependent on me, or any tutor. I kept taking on more tutoring because I felt like I couldn’t leave these people—who were often family friends—to be dumped into the “test prep world” filled with so many people just looking to make some quick cash. These students’ futures and how they felt about themselves was too important for that.

“Em!” he said. “Thank you!”

Then genius struck me, and I thought, “I can actually help these people, and whatever money I make can fund my rap career.”

Other past students of Ray’s would do the same—more than for other teachers. No one likes to let down Ray Dass.

EB: Seriously?

From the backseat, Ray’s son started a conversation that helped me clarify why. The conversation was this: One time, Luke ordered chicken nuggets and fries. But the takeout bag came with triple the food. “It wasn’t magic,” Luke said.

RD: Yes! Originally, I didn’t even name the company after myself! I wanted to fade into the background and make music. But anytime anyone called, they were asking, “Is this the Ray Dass program?” So I had to change the name, even though it completely ruined any chance of my having any street credibility.

“What do you mean?” Ray said, laughing.

EB: I’m sure a lot of parents will be reading this interview. What would you say to them?

“It was too much. No one could eat all of that,” Luke said. Ray paused a minute.

RD: Don’t let your kids listen to rap music.

“You’re right,” he said. “That’s true.” He listened to Luke thoughtfully, and I realized why it still matters to me what Ray thinks. Twelve years ago, I was seventeen with a belly-button ring, and chronically annoyed, and Ray took me seriously. He listened to what I said. That is to say that long before his “Know You Can” tagline, Ray convinced students he knew what they could do. He said other kids’ success wasn’t genetics or destiny—if you wanted something, you just had to push. You (I) wanted that to be true. We didn’t want to let down Ray. He walked through the high school hallways with celebrity-level fanfare, as an SAT instructor. He built the #1 National Merit Program among private schools in the nation, producing hundreds of National Merit finalists and semi–finalists. No one else did that. That actually does seem a little like magic. EB: Ray, what drew you to education? RD: Before I started school, my mom and I had so much fun playing together. I realized when I was older that our games were educational. She made learning fun and was way ahead of her time. She got her Master’s in computer science in the early ‘80s, before most people even thought about owning computers. I was like a little assistant in her lab, helping grad students print their papers on these computers that no one understood yet. I was learning and teaching before I really even knew what I was doing. EB: How did you get into test prep? RD: I always wondered what I was capable of. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up and I didn’t feel like I was a genius, so I wanted to know what was possible for my future. If I could help a friend with a seemingly unsolvable problem, it made me feel like maybe there was hope for me, too. I know how this sounds but by the time I was in college, I was certain I was going to be a rapper. I was in the studio every night, and was going to classes and tutoring during the day. The thing is, I kept getting drawn into what was happening with every student I worked with. I couldn’t stand the thought of any student thinking they were anything less than capable.

I’m joking. First, come out to the RAY DASS PARENT NIGHT! That’s where I can get into a lot more detail than I can here! If you can’t make it to the event, check out the RAY DASS EXPERT TIPS page we created for this magazine, and then contact us so we can speak with you! Beyond that, the most important lesson I’ve learned working with so many kids is that most of us are capable of so much more than we realize. Incredible achievements aren’t usually so much about innate talent, as they are about believing in ourselves and putting in the work! EB: That’s always been your message, more or less. I wasn’t sure if it was just an angle you used to get us to work harder at first. But it seems like something you live by. RD: To start this company, I had to believe. I didn’t have money or business experience. I had to believe, and literally banked my future on a bunch of credit card accounts. This isn’t just a message to drive students to do their best, it’s what I’ve had to live by. EB: I haven’t asked you yet about SARA. What was your vision for the app? RD: I wanted a book that was alive: I wanted to be able touch a question, and have it come to life, to teach me—in a highquality, well-produced video—and then I’d want to be able to practice until I understood. That didn’t exist, so we created it. It feels like destiny that it was named after my mom, who was a visionary in computer science, and gave me my love for learning. EB: Last question: Do you think you’ll rap again? RD: I am rapping! I’ve been rapping! I haven’t stopped! EB: That’s a wrap! RD: Em. Stop.

“The Coral Springs Museum of Art has hosted ArtFull Saturday for almost 20 years. It was previously known as Family Fun Days,” said Julia Andrews, Executive Director of the Coral Springs Museum of Art, adding, “This event takes place on the 2nd Saturday of each month. Parents, grandparents and children gather for a guided tour and a fun, creative, hands-on project that relates back to artworks shown in the gallery. This is such a wonderful family event. It gives families a chance to learn and create together.” The Artfull Saturdays event brings awareness to the local museum and its many programs. The mission of the Coral Springs Museum of Art is to engage and connect our diverse communities with dynamic exhibits, exceptional art education, stimulating specialty programs and inspired events to ignite cultural enrichment. As a community based organization, the Museum has seen first-hand the needs of the South Florida area. Because of this, the Museum is dedicated to developing and delivering the absolute best in art offerings through classes, and public and educational programs. Programs include: complimentary admission the first Wednesday of each month; Kaleidoscope: The Beauty of Autism – a program to help with the cogni-

tive and emotional development of children with varying levels of autism; ArtStart – an early education program; Creative Coding. Creating Futures – a program dedicated to helping at-risk children find their passion and a future through digital art; ARTiculate – a STEAM program for underserved elementary and middle school students and many more.. Over the 22-year history, the Coral Springs Museum of Art is proud to have touched the lives of, and inspired, over a half a million people through its endless and significant visual art offerings. “We welcome guests who have never visited the museum. We so often hear that people didn’t realize that such an important asset was located in their very own community,” added Andrews. For the Artfull Saturdays event, attendees should arrive by 2:45 p.m.; due to the instructional nature of the program, it will begin promptly at 3 p.m. The fee for Artfull participation is $5 per person. The pre-sale rate is $4 per person. Register by September 14th to get the pre-sale rate. Payment is required for all attendees of Artfull Saturday, both adults and children ages 3 and up. Florida Panthers Promote Literacy Throughout South Florida BY JOHN DUKA

F

lorida Panther alum Serge Payer read Snoopy Plays Hockey at the Young At Art Library in Davie to concluded the Panthers’ Second annual Summer Reading Tour on August 7th. In conjunction with the Broward County Library Division, the Panthers stopped by 10 different libraries throughout South Florida over the last two months, using the game of hockey to promote reading and inspire young children to not only think about picking up a stick but also to pick up a book or two. With the Panther Patrol in tow, the team brought games, prizes and even a special guest reader to each stop, with the reader, typically a player or broadcaster, also taking questions and signing autographs. Some of the highlights from this summer’s tour included: Kicking off the reading tour at the Main Library in Fort Lauderdale on June 13 with special guest Randy

Moller, a former Panthers defenseman. The team’s television color analyst from FOX Sports, also stopped in to read Z for Zamboni. “For the kids to be able to hear a wonderful voice like [Randy’s] and see a player, it helps them get interested in reading,” said Broward County Main Library Youth Supervisor Autumn Dec. Other stops on the tour included the AfricanAmerican Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale, the West Regional Library in Plantation, the South Regional Library in Pembroke Pines plus many more. At each event, youngsters got to meet their hockey heroes, read a fun book, pick up an autograph and even pose for a picture with the team mascot, Stanley C. Panther! Feedback from the events was quite positive. Expect to see more reading Panthers in the future!

The Florida Panthers are South Florida’s only National Hockey League Team. They play home games at the B,B&T Center in Sunrise. Fore more information on the Reading Tour or to purchase hockey tickets, visit www.nhl.com/panthers

A Race to Honor and Remember BY NICOL JENKINS

ith the 18th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 attacks approaching, the City of Coral Springs continues their commitment in honoring the victims and fallen heroes who were taken from us that day. On Saturday, September 7th, the community will come together once again in unity at the annual Coral Springs Remembrance 5K Run/ Walk. The run will kick off at the Coral Springs Northwest Regional Library, located at 3151 University Drive, at 7 a.m. This is a family friendly event. They are encouraging groups to register as a team as team awards will be given. “The City of Coral Springs remains committed to honoring the victims and the families left behind from the attacks on America, coming together as a community, honoring and remembering,” said Lydia

Cutz, Community Relations Coordinator for the City of Coral Springs. “September 11th marks 18 years since the horrific attacks on our nation and its citizens. It is so important that we continue to honor those who lost their lives, the families they left behind and the first responders who bravely responded on that fateful day. Our City has always been committed to honoring the victims of 9/11... Our City and its residents will never forget,” added Cutz. In addition to promoting a healthy family event, the purpose is to acknowledge all of the firstresponders who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001, according to Kelle Burke, Event Organizer with In The Zone Event and Sports Management. “It also allows participants to run alongside police and fire personnel- often in full gear- as a way to show support of their contributions to the communities they serve. This event also provides people to acknowledge all of the first responders who were there or someone who lost a loved one,” said Burke. There will be awards given out to the top three overall male and female runners, as well as the top three male and female in age-appropriate categories. Team awards will also be given out to the top fire

Broward County Public Schools will partner with the Florida branch of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) to implement ADL’s No Place for Hate Initiative in all 234 Broward County schools during the 20192020 school year. Coral Springs Native Serves at Key Navy Engineering Command BY DUSTY GOOD, NAVY OFFICE OF

A

1990 Coral Springs High School graduate is serving with Navy Facilities Engineering Command Southeast (NAVFAC Southeast) in Jacksonville, Florida, a key engineering command. Retired Petty Officer 1st Class Jeffrey Hamlin serves as a public affairs specialist that is responsible for internal and external communications. Hamlin is a 2014 graduate of Florida State College of Jacksonville with a degree in digital media. “Growing up, my hometown was a small community and I was interested in joining the Navy because it was something different for me and the area,” said Hamlin. “I wanted to travel and do something different.” NAVFAC plans, designs and manages construction; provides contingency engineering response; and enables energy security and environmental stewardship for the U.S. Navy. The Jacksonville office manages operations on Navy installations from Charleston, S.C. to Corpus Christi, Texas and south to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. NAVFAC professionals also acquire and dispose of real estate, manage and maintain the facilities on all naval bases, and provide housing for mili-

tary families. Its Public Works Department provides facilities support services to installations. Every day presents new and different challenges for the professionals of the Command. From planning a new full-service hospital to the construction of a state-of-the-art hangar facility, members of the Command make significant contributions to the Navy. “It is an honor to lead the men and women of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast,” said NAVFAC Southeast Commanding Officer Capt. Mike Monreal. “Our team of facilities and acquisition experts have tremendous dedication and professionalism as they drive infrastructure readiness in support of our nation’s Warfighters.” Hamlin is now a part of a long-standing tradition of serving in the Navy our nation needs. “My grandfather was in World War II and served under Patton,” said Hamlin. “He was a huge inspiration to me because he went through so much. He went on a mission to go behind enemy lines but managed to make it back to safety and received the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts.” “Retiring in the Navy is my proudest accomplishment,” said Hamlin. “I was able to look back on my

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: CORAL SPRINGS

Coral Springs Update MAYOR SCOTT J. BROOK ith summer behind us and school back in session – it’s time to turn our attention to the exciting things taking place in our City! It is exciting that SeniorAdvice.com recently ranked Coral Springs as the #1 U.S. City for retirement, based on safety, our idyllic weather, proximity to beaches and no state income tax. With more than 10% of City residents older than 65, it is no surprise we are top on the list. I am honored to announce that your Coral Springs City Commission voted unanimously to rename 94th Avenue, between Sample Road and 31st Court and located east of City Hall, after our late Mayor, Walter “Skip” Campbell. I personally considered Skip to be a great friend and mentor – he was a true pillar of our community. I can think of no better way to honor his legacy and impact on our City. The Coral Springs Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has agreed to fund the cost to designate Walter “Skip” Campbell Avenue. A street sign unveiling is in the planning stages and expected to take place in October. Our 48 parks in the City are one of the many reasons our residents made Coral Springs their home. Our Parks and Recreation Department is working to create a master plan to reimagine the parks experience for our residents. The first step in part of that plan is the installation of turf fields, which compared to grass fields, require less maintenance and are more durable. This is especially important for the type of weather we experience in South Florida. As the plan for our parks progresses, I will keep you informed. The City is committed to educating residents how to “Recycle Right” and recently announced we now have “an app for that.” The Recycle Coach app not only assists residents with proper waste disposal, it customizes curbside collection calendars and includes a problem-reporting tool, which notifies City staff about missed collections. You can download the app from the App Store or Google Play, depending on your mobile device. You can learn more about this free service at www.coralsprings.org/ recyclecoach. As I have mentioned previously, it is so important for our residents to take an active role in the City’s budget process. You can attend our first public budget hearing on September 12th at 5:15 p.m. and the second hearing on September 18th at 6:30 p.m., both are in Commission Chambers at City Hall. Should you have additional questions, call (954) 346-1723. In closing, this September 11th marks 18 years since the horrific attacks on our nation and its citizens. It is so important that we continue to honor those who lost their lives, the families they left behind and the first responders who bravely responded on that fateful day. Our City has always been committed to honoring the victims of 9/11. From the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Museum we hosted last year, the permanent memorial located at the Coral Springs Public Library and the annual Coral Springs 5K Remembrance Run, our City and its residents will never forget.

W

As always if you would like to meet with me, you can make an appointment by calling (954) 344-5906 or email me at sbrook@coralsprings.org. You can also reach me on my cell phone at (954) 696-7599. 32 SEPTEMBER 2019 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: PARKLAND

Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY y the end of August, every homeowner should have received their TRIM (Truth in Millage) notice which comes from the Broward County Property Appraiser. This notice can also be found online at www.bcpa.net. The TRIM notice details home market value and assessed value in addition to exemptions. It also shows the various taxing authorities (Broward County, Broward County Public Schools, South Florida Water Management District, North Broward Hospital District, Children’s Services Council, City of Parkland, etc) that make up your entire tax bill, what their current millage (property tax) rate is and what their highest proposed millage rate may be. Additionally, you will find all the times, dates and locations of all the public budget hearings for every taxing authority. PLEASE take a close look at your TRIM notice this year so that you know how much each taxing authority is proposing to tax you and where you can go to give your input on their budgets. Assessments are also listed on your TRIM notice separate from the property taxes. These include the Waste Management assessment services, which is a direct pass through amount from Waste Management for solid waste and recycling services, and the Parkland fire services fee. Additionally, some residents will have various water control assessments from North Springs Improvement District, Parkland Water Control or Pinetree Water Control depending where the home is located in the city. September is a very important month because it is the month that the cities and other taxing authorities approve their FY2020 budgets. After months of strategic planning that included commission workshops, resident surveys and focus groups, the City Commission gave staff direction regarding priorities for the 2019/20 fiscal year and beyond. Based on these priorities, staff presented the commission with a proposed 2019/20 budget, which kept the millage rate and fire assessment fee the same as last year. You can see the City of Parkland proposed budget online now on the city website at cityofparkland.org/budget. Please take the time to review the proposed budget and give us your feedback in the online comments section. Our budget hearings are scheduled for September 12 at 7pm and September 25 at 6pm at Parkland City Hall. We look forward to hearing from you. As we head into the fall, we have so many wonderful events going on in Parkland such as the Back to School Splash Bash on September 14. MESSAGE FROM THE HEART

Happy Birthday RABBI YANKIE DENBURG appy Birthday! There is a good chance your biological birthday is months away. Yet I wholeheartedly wish you a happy, healthy and meaningful birthday. Rosh Hashanah – commonly described as the Jewish New Year – is actually not a Jewish event. Yes, it is the first day of the year on the Jewish calendar, simply because this was the first day when we started counting time. Adam and Eve, the first human beings to walk the earth and enjoy its fruits, were created by G-d on this day. And since this is the date when the human species began their existence as created beings in this world, this day will always be remembered as the Birthday Party of Humanity. A birthday is actually the celebration of two things: Firstly, it is a day of thanks for your being born and receiving the gift of life. A birthday is a commemoration of your grand entrance into this world. But more important than just reliving the past, there is a significant objective and goal to achieve by observing your birthday. It is a reminder that G-d wanted YOU to be a part of His universe. The day you were born, is the day G-d decided the universe could no longer exist without you! There is a fundamental belief in Judaism that “of everything that G-d created in the world, not one thing was created in vain” (Talmud Shabbos 77b). If G-d made you exist, it’s not an accident or glitch. If he made you, obviously your existence is very much needed! There is a fascinating discussion recorded between the famous King David and G-d. When David was still a young shepherd watching his father’s sheep, he observed a spider building a web. He wondered why G-d would create “such ugly and useless creatures” as spiders. G‑d responded “be patient, a day will come when you’ll want to kiss one”. Years later, King Saul wanted to kill the popular David, and David was forced to flee from King Saul’s army. When he could no longer run he hid inside a cave, realizing he would soon be discovered by the soldiers hot on his trail. Suddenly a spider emerged and constructed a huge web blocking the entrance to the cave. When the officers arrived at the cave’s entrance and saw the unbroken spider web, they assumed that David could not be hiding in that cave and they continued on their search. The future King’s life was saved – by an “ugly and useless” spider! But unlike spiders, every human being is created exclusively unique. In fact, you are a custom-made and special-order designer piece, built with the unique specs and high-end finishes that G-d wanted on your one-of-akind being. Just like a birthday is a personal moment when we reflect on our own renewed existence, so too Rosh Hashanah is our national moment of reflection when our existence proves that the world needs us. The question is if, and how, are we fulfilling our unique Divine mission? So… Happy Birthday! Just make sure you reveal your value.

ASK THE SHERIFF

An Evolution in Community Policing BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY have dedicated my career in law enforcement to making a positive impact on the lives of the citizens in the community. Now, as sheriff, it is the foundation of how I run the Broward Sheriff’s Office. I have seen how small interactions with the public achieve huge safety results, so I have directed our deputies to get out of their squad cars, walk the streets and connect with people. These interactions go a long way toward building trust and respect, raising awareness and bridging any gaps that may exist. When we are more visible and hands-on, people feel more comfortable sharing concerns, providing helpful tips and ultimately contributing to a safer and brighter future for all. With this in mind, BSO is ready to take community policing to the next level. I’m excited to announce the launch of the Neighborhood Support Teams (NST), an innovative new initiative focused on further strengthening law enforcement and community relationships.

The NST, which will be comprised of law enforcement representatives, will work with various members of the community to develop a strong network of representation and involvement. This includes leaders, business stakeholders, faith-based institutions, school board officials, activists, mental health professionals, social workers, residents, youth groups and high school students. These individuals and groups are the eyes and ears of their neighborhoods. They have the pulse of the community, understand their strengths and weaknesses and provide an intimate perspective on the needs of their area beyond routine calls for service. The NST’s responsibilities are far-reaching and extend to every corner of the county. Our representatives will host monthly meetings with stakeholders to maintain engagement and continue to foster positive working relationships. In addition, they will play an active role in various community events, experiences and partnerships. Teams will provide numerous educational opportunities, including hosting public safety seminars and cultural diversity discussions, and providing education on other important topics, such as civilian rights pertaining to policing encounters and civilian active shooter response protocols. They will also help connect varied groups, including veterans, the elderly, individuals suffering from mental health problems and those struggling to put food on their table, with vital resources to help provide them with the assistance they need. And we are focusing on our youth through back-to-school initiatives and mentorship opportunities. To learn more about Neighborhood Support Teams, please visit us at sheriff.org/nst. SUCCESS = REWARD You can stay connected by following the sheriff on Twitter @BrowardSheriff or emailing him directly at ask_the_sheriff@sheriff.org.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF: MARGATE

Social Media is Critical in Law Enforcement

Have a Great School Year! 2019

CHIEF JON SHAW

T

he perfect time to discuss the importance of transportation safety for your children, to and from school. Whether your child walks, rides their bicycle, travels on the bus, or is driven by a parent or loved one to school, there are several tips to ensure a safe arrival! Walking or riding a bicycle are the most beneficial modes of transportation for your child’s health! With that being said, we must do everything we can to help them stay safe as they travel to and from school. You and your child should follow these walking/riding safety tips: ▸▸ Your child should be accompanied by an adult if they’re younger than 10 years of age. ▸▸ Set up a neighborhood buddy system for your child to walk with friends. ▸▸ Map out safe routes for your child to take, and practice the routes with them. ▸▸ Always obey traffic signals, and use a crosswalk; if possible, cross with a crossing guard. ▸▸ Look in all directions prior to crossing the street, and continue to look while crossing. ▸▸ Walk on a sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the street, facing oncoming traffic. ▸▸ Stay off cell phones and don’t wear headphones, to maximize surrounding awareness. ▸▸ If riding a bicycle, assure your child wears a helmet. School buses are the safest mode of transportation for your child because they’re the most regulated vehicles on the road, and they are designed to be safer than passenger vehicles in preventing crashes and injuries. In addition, school buses are highly visible, include several safety features, and there are laws that protect your child while entering or exiting the bus. Here are some school bus safety tips: ▸▸ When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic and avoid careless behavior. ▸▸ Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop and the doors have opened, prior to approaching. ▸▸ Don’t engage in any behaviors that will distract the driver, and make sure to keep your head, arms, and hands inside of the bus at all times. ▸▸ Make sure the bus has come to a complete stop before getting out of your seat. ▸▸ If you have to cross in front of the bus, first walk at least 10 feet ahead until you can see the driver, and make sure the driver sees you. ▸▸ When the driver signals, look in all directions prior to crossing, and continue to look as you cross. ▸▸ Stay away from the rear wheels of the bus at all times. If you or a loved one are transporting your child to and from school, it’s important to use proper child seats and seat belts. Stay off your cell phones, obey all traffic laws, and always pay attention for school zones. Schools often have specific drop off and pick up procedures; make sure you know them to assure the safety of all children, parents, and school staff. Transportation incidents are preventable; stay safe, and have a wonderful school year! You can connect with Chief Shaw at 954-972-7111 or through the Margate Police Department website at www. margatefl.com/215/Police
