Moments of Kindness T
his year we will mark the 20th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in American history. Like many, we will never forget the moment we learned of the tragedy and vowed to never forget. We were living in Hong Kong, on a temporary work assignment at the time of the attack. After confirming the safety of our friends, coworkers, and loved ones we spent the remainder of that day wandering through that great city in a bit of a numb fog. What we will also never forget was the omnipresent kindness of strangers on that day. Countless Chinese and Cantonese strangers approached us that day to offer condolences. Our appearance and mannerisms made it fairly obvious we were Americans. Strangers simply wanted us to know they felt the same grief we did. Outside the United States Consulate people had begun placing flowers in a sort-of make-shift memorial. We attempted to purchase flowers to place but were told they would be free for us on that day. A young girl gave us a single yellow flower as if we were somehow representative of those who had been lost. Like everyone, remembering that terrible day will always conjure images of the worst people can be. But, for us, we also remember those moments of kindness and shared humanity. We are hopeful, even in our darkest moments, that the “greater angels” of our souls will win out. Sincerely,

Service Around the Clock! Air Around the Clock Now Offers Plumbing in Addition to Air Conditioning Service By Nick Jaillet
Air Around the Clock Now Offers Plumbing In Addition to Air Conditioning Service If you spend any time at all on the highway, then you’ve probably seen the “Your Wife is Hot” billboards promoting Air Around The Clock Air Conditioning Service. What you may not know, however, is the fact that Air Around the Clock is the number one dealer of Rheem and American Standard Air Conditioners in Florida. They have been helping South Florida homeowners for over 40 years. With its fleet of 120 trucks, the company provides service from North Miami all the way to Vero Beach. They service, repair, and replace any brand of air conditioner; offer same-day service and have a number of financing options. Air Around the Clock also recently expanding into plumbing by opening a new division called Around the Clock Plumbing.

You recently expanded into Plumbing. Tell us more! Over the years, we have had numerous customers ask us about plumbing services as they wanted to deal with just one trusted company for all their household needs. We decided to start our plumbing division. All of our plumbers are highly trained and licensed. Just like our A/C division, we offer same-day service and free service calls if work is done. We even offer same-day water heater installs. Our plumbing division is a full-service plumbing operation. We repair plumbing emergencies large and small: everything from clogged toilets and leaks to water heater replacements to major repairs.
Do you offer financing?
We sat down with CEO and President, Eric Pereira to learn more.
Tell us how Air Around the Clock became so successful. At Air Around the Clock, we put our customers first. We offer same-day service calls and have fully stocked trucks. 93% of the time we can repair whatever your needs are with what is on the truck. We also stand behind all of our work. Yes! We offer financing for all needs, with over 400 banks we deal with. We have multiple financing options for all credit scores, with over a 93% approval rate, and offer YGRENE Financing for homeowners that would like a longer term with 7.9 APR payout. With some of our financing options, there is no credit check.
Many homeowners became more informed about air quality during the pandemic. Do you install air purification
systems in homes? We offer a number of solutions to help keep the air in your home clean and fresh. These include UV Lights, Air Scrubbers, Rheem, and iWave Air Purification Systems. These are very helpful for allergies, and some of the products help neutralize the COVID-19 virus.

Reflections on 9/11
O
n September 11, 2001, Miramar Police Captain Mike Yepez was wearing a different uniform. He was working as a New York City Police Department (NYPD) patrol officer. Below is his personal story of that fateful day: I used to work the night shift. When I would arrive home at around 6:30-7:00 a.m., I would always unplug my home phone to sleep without interruptions. For some unknown reason I didn’t unplug my phone that day. That had never happened. At around 8 a.m. I received a call from my lieutenant and was told I had to come in for court. As I was driving on the Verrazano Bridge, listening to the radio, I heard about a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. I thought it was a bad joke until I looked up and saw the smoke. I passed the toll bridge and saw the second plane strike the second tower. I knew then it was no accident. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. My fiancé at the time, Jenny, was working at the World Trade Center building 7. Along with the towers, that building collapsed as well. Cell phones were not as common as they are today. We didn’t own one and I was concerned and unable to get a hold of her. I remember walking into the 66 Precinct, and everyone was crying. I was told to suit up in our riot gear. There was an utter silence in the locker room. That was uncommon. Usually, guys were joking around and being loud. Fifteen of us squeezed into a transport van and headed toward the towers. Vehicles in the Battery Tunnel were not moving. We evacuated everyone in the cars and decided to walk through the Battery tunnel into Manhattan. The site looked like a scene from a movie… a cloud of dust; people running, screaming, crying; chaos. It seemed unreal. I kept thinking about how to get into contact with Jenny. 18 / September 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
By: Captain Mike Yepez Our assignment was to help with rescue efforts. Exhausted from the previous shift and with no sleep, I worked for another 38 hours. We all wanted to save someone. That’s what pushed us to continue working, while breathing in soot. At that point we had no masks, and we didn’t care. I was relieved of duty for twelve hours and was able to go home. That’s when I found out Jenny had survived. She had walked out of her building after the first plane hit and decided not to go back in. She walked that day for hours and hours to her parents’ home in New Jersey. For the next three months many NYPD officers worked twelve hour shifts with no days off. I felt as if I was on autopilot. I didn’t have the leisure to feel anything. It took six months for what occurred to really sink-in. Jenny didn’t have a job anymore; knew she wouldn’t be seeing much of me during the recovery efforts and decided to stay with her parents in their second home in Miramar. Nine months later I decided to give South Florida a try, but in my heart I felt I would be back in New York within a year. And I was… I had taken a short trip back to file paperwork for my return to the NYPD. That trip conjured up many memories, good and bad. When I returned to the Florida sunshine, I decided my life would continue here. I love New York, but 9/11 had forever
changed the course of my life and career. The Miramar Police Department became my home in 2002. Grateful for what the department has offered me throughout my career, I find great joy in mentoring new recruits. When I was asked to write about my 9/11 experience, I pulled from an album an old picture of me in my NYPD uniform. The kid in that picture had no idea what he was getting himself into. However, every time he put that uniform on, he enjoyed every minute of it and did it with pride and honor. When I left New York, I bought a video commemorating 9/11. I have yet been able to watch it. It took me about 10 years before I was able to even speak about what happened that day and deal with all of the emotions. We often hear the term “Never Forget.” On this 20th Anniversary of 9/11, I will ‘Never Forget’ the pride we felt to be an American at that time. It didn’t matter what your background was or what uniform you were wearing that day. We all came together and showed the world the compassion we had for each other. Captain Mike Yepez will be a guest speaker at Miramar’s 9/11 Memorial Site Dedication on Saturday, September 11th, 2021, 9:30 a.m. at Miramar Regional Park. The event is open to the public. ASK THE SHERIFF
PREPARING FOR THE UNEXPECTED
H
ow can we better prepare? It is the question every public safety professional asks and the motivation behind everything we do. Better preparation allows for the best possible response to any incident. Often the incidents or disasters we prepare for are unplanned, happening with little to no warning. However, by training for the unexpected, we remain ready to respond. While preparation is the foundation of public safety agencies, I can’t stress enough how important it is for the public to be prepared. As we observe National Preparedness Month, I recommend creating an actionable plan and setting it in motion. The four weeks of September provide an excellent opportunity to focus on the various aspects of preparedness to help keep you and your loved ones safe. Week One – Make A Hurricane Plan In South Florida, it is never the wrong time to prepare for a hurricane. Gather drinking water, batteries, sanitation products, and anything you and your family might need to weather a storm. Be sure there are enough supplies to last at least five days. If staying at home is not an option, know in advance where you will stay during a hurricane. For informa-
By Sheriff Gregory Tony
tion about emergency evacuation, transportation, and shelter locations, visit www.broward. org/hurricane. Week Two – Create A Home Emergency Plan When an emergency happens at home, ensure all family members know what to do and where to go. Create a communication plan so everyone can keep in contact. Create an evacuation plan and designate a meeting area. Take into consideration the ages and unique needs of each family member and pet. Ensure the items that may help you in an emergency, such as a fire extinguisher or smoke alarm, are working. Week Three – Secure Your Sensitive Documents And Valuables With a comprehensive plan in place, you can now focus on protecting sensitive documents and valuables. First, collect the documents you would need to help identify family members in the event of an emergency. Keep these and other important, sensitive documents, such as insurance papers, at home in a fireproof and waterproof box or safe. Week Four – Teach Your Loved Ones About Preparedness Finally, review your plans with family members. Practice evacuation drills. Take
courses together to learn survival skills. BSO offers free bleeding control and CPR courses. Sign up for one at https://bit.ly/2Vyg0zC. If each of us takes the time to prepare and stay prepared, it makes our whole community safer. On a final note, I would be remiss in not acknowledging the 20th anniversary of 9/11. It was a day that changed everyone’s lives. I often still think of the brave first responders who started that morning like any other and rushed into the Twin Towers and Pentagon to do what they are expected to do on any given day. By continuing to honor them and all the innocent lives lost, we are keeping alive a stark reminder of the sacrifices our first responders make to protect others. Let us not allow 9/11 to become just another date on the calendar. #NeverForget Service Equals Reward

Coral Springs Mom Releases Inspirational Memoir
D
About Son Battling Cancer
estiny Haggett is grateful for so much in her life—a successful career as a model, public speaker and manager of a private 962-seat live entertainment venue; a happy marriage to Bill Haggett, the general manager of the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, and mother to five beautiful children; and now the author of an inspirational memoir Gifts Along the Broken Path. But with all the blessings have come many challenges, particularly serious health problems for both her and her 20-year-old son Chansen Savakinus, who is now battling his third life-threatening illness, this one a previously unknown variant of liver cancer. How Destiny and her family have dealt with these challenges is the subject of her new memoir, which will have its official book launch on Tuesday, September 14, 5 to 7 pm, at Deja Blue Restaurant, located at 7805 North University Drive in Parkland. “We have had a miraculous life in many ways, but also numerous obstacles to overcome,” says Destiny Haggett, who was only the 13th woman in this country to survive, along with the baby, a splenic artery aneurysm rupture during pregnancy. “Chansen battled Leukemia twice while growing up, enduring seven years of treatment, before being stricken by cancer again last May.” “While written before the latest cancer diagnosis, Gifts Along the Broken Path is a tale of hope and grace that is sure to inspire anyone that reads it, particularly those who are trying to overcome similar hurdles in their lives,” she adds. “All proceeds from the sale of this book will be used to help offset the costs that will come with Chansen’s latest treatment.”

All copies of the book sold through September 23 will be limited and autographed first edition copies that will contain an electronic PDF version to be read on electronic devices. Books can be purchased online www.haggetthouse.com. The book launch on September 14 will include a Meet & Greet with the Author, book signing, and raffle of a donated painting from artist Nava Lundy. “I hope everyone will join us at my official book launch, and I want to give special thanks to my dear friends Catherine Walker, Jennifer Caronna, and Sabrina Cozzolino, part owner of Deja Blue, for their ongoing support in making this happen,” says Haggett.

Steve Hutchinson Inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame By Jon Duka
C
oral Springs High School alum Steve Hutchinson was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame on August 8, 2021. The offensive guard collected accolades at every level he played including his 12 years in the National Football League. He was recognized as one of the 33 best high school football plates the state of Florida has ever produced by being named to the Florida High School Athletic Association’s “All-Century Team” in 2007. He was an All-American and 2000 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the year while playing at the University of Michigan and was a seven-time Pro Bowler and seven-time All-Pro while in the NFL. Hutchinson gave an emotional speech at the Hall of Fame’s induction ceremony in Canton Ohio. The event was headlined by the induction of quarterback, Peyton Manning, however, every football fan knows “the men in the trenches” are frequently the key to winning and losing. “Although I am the one standing here being honored,” said Hutchinson, “I’d like to spend my time honoring the people who helped me along the way to make this possible.” Hutchinson began the speech by thanking his parents, long-time Coral Springs residents Fred and Sandi Hutchinson. He also singled out former Coral Springs High School coaches Terry Dunn and Bill Kramer for the lasting impacts they made on his football career and life more broadly. Hutchinson saved the most heartfelt commentary of his speech for his two children, Lily and Luke and, especially his wife Landyn. The two graduated together from Coral Springs High School and have known each other since eighth grade.

THE CORAL SPRINGS COMMISSION
CORAL SPRINGS COMMISION AUGUST MESSAGE
I
t’s already September 2021, which officially marks the end of the summer season. This month we are excited to come to together as a community to celebrate, honor and remember what America stands for: unity, diversity and hard work. On Monday, September 6th we recognize the hard work and contributions of laborers across our country as we celebrate Labor Day. The value of hard-working Americans is unmeasurable and so on this day we honor, thank, and appreciate every hard-working individual who helps to make Coral Springs the best city in which to live, work and raise a family. City Hall and City Hall in the Mall will be closed in observance. As we reach the 20th Anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on our nation, the city will commemorate the occasion with a variety of events. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
PARKLAND UPDATE By Mayor Rich Walker
W
hile September arrives with the onset of Fall, never too noticeable with South Florida weather, we welcome the hustle and bustle of back-to-school events, open houses, evening football games, and the prospect of some cooler temperatures. I hope the first few weeks of school have been a smooth transition for all. I cannot thank our teachers, administrators, and staff enough. Parkland is so lucky to have a plethora of dedicated educators committed to teaching our children and helping them grow not only as students, but as the future of our community. As we continue to navigate the unknown territories of the pandemic, we appreciate everyone’s cooperation and optimism. Together we will get through this difficult time. Labor Day is a significant federal holiday that takes place on the first Monday in September, culminating the end of the long Labor Day weekend filled with barbecues, parades, and beachside festivities. A tribute to all American workers, Labor Day recognizes the significant contribution of organized labor and the individual rights of all workers.
September also highlights two high holidays within the Jewish faith, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Happy New year and G’Mar Tov to the many members of our community who honor and celebrate these occasions. On a reflective note, this month marks 20 years since the September 11 attacks in 2001. It is still difficult to believe two decades later, but 2,977 people were killed [according to encyclopedia Britannica] with many thousands more injured and suffering long-term side effects to this day. At the World Trade Center in New York, 2,753 people died including 343 firefighters and 60 New York Police Officers and Port Authority Officers. At the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, 184 people died and 40 people died outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. These represent not only the worst terrorist attack in world history, but also the deadliest incident ever for firefighters and law enforcement officers in out nation’s history. Understanding that behind each one of these human statistics is a family and a circle of friends that continue to grieve, is why those of us who were of age on that fateful day remember exactly where we were. recall the powerful way our country unified in the aftermath. There is perhaps no greater example in modern American history that more clearly demonstrates that core thread of how much we can accomplish once we set aside our differences, embrace what we have in common, and put our minds to progress. One of the ways we see that in our everyday lives is through the bravery exemplified by our first responders. These men and women are a true testament to what it means to be a hero. Meet Melo. Melo is an 11 week old sweet Dalmatian. Melo has bilateral deafness, but very responsive to hand gestures/sign language. Melo loves to cuddle with her family, she enjoys long walks and loves to fetch the ball. Melo loves playing with the tons of toys in her toy box and surely enjoys a good nap!
