Will CBD Give You The Relief You Have Been Hoping For? BY JOHN BRODIE

“C

BD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, but the strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications.” -The Harvard Medical School Health Blog Another study demonstrated the mechanism by which CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat. Conditions that may respond favorably to this treatment: ◆ Diabetes ◆ Rheumatoid arthritis ◆ Epilepsy ◆ Antibiotic-resistant infections ◆ Alcoholism ◆ PTSD ◆ Neurological disorders ◆ Alzheimer’s disease ◆ Depression ◆ Menstrual cramps ◆ Migraine headaches I sat down recently with Charles Smith, the Founder of UPS Wellness. After 15 years of marketing tobacco products, he decided it was time to start investing his effort and skills into products that actually help people. After trying CBD to help manage workplace stress and considering CBD’s beneficial effects with no evidence of any negative side effects, Charles became convinced this was the product that he wanted to spend his time and effort marketing and promoting.

Realizing that product integrity and consumer education would be the key to long term success, Charles founded UPS Wellness and sourced a high quality extract from PCR hemp. UPS Wellness CBD is sourced from PCR hemp, not industrial hemp Purified twice (first to remove waxes, chlorophyll, lipids, etc.; second to remove THC) PCR Hemp Oil is an acronym for Phyto-Cannabinoid Rich, a direct reference to the sum total number of cannabinoids found in the oil. It is the purity and strength of the product that determines its effectiveness. All UPS Wellness products are and always will be: Safe, Simple, and Satisfying. The UPS Wellness product is neither the most expensive nor least expensive on the market but Charles’ intent is to provide the highest “value” based on product quality and

dosage amount. To back up his value proposition, there is a 30 day, no questions asked, money back guarantee and US based customer service. “There is no risk in shopping with us.”, he says. Here’s how Charles Smith finished off our conversation: Leaving a comfortable, well paid job with great benefits wasn’t easy but there were really two basic things that drove my decision. First, I know from personal experience that CBD works and I believe in the potential it has to make a positive difference in people’s lives. I decided that if I was going to spend eight hours a day selling something, it had to be something natural and healthy that would help people live happier, more productive lives. That’s our mission at UPS wellness and we’re really looking forward to making that positive difference.

From Samhain to All Hallows Eve to Halloween

D

o you celebrate the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain? If you or your kids are dressing up to go trick-or-treating this month you just might. Believe it or not, Halloween dates back about 2,000 years to the area that is now Ireland and the British Islands. The Celts, who inhabited those islands at the time, celebrated their new year on November 1st. The day marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter. For the Celts, winter was a period of struggle and often death. They believed that on that night the barrier between the living and the dead would open and the ghosts of the dead would return. The Celts burned huge bonfires and wore costumes consisting of animal skins and even heads. Their priests, called Druids, would attempt to contact the spirits and tell people’s fortunes. After the Romans conquered the British Isles, the celebration was combined with a Roman festival that commemorates the passing of the dead, called Feralia. About 600 years later Christianity had spread throughout Europe and Pope Boniface IV established the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day, which was later changed to All Soul’s Day, in honor of the dead. It was celebrated on the same day and using the same customs as Samhain. The Middle English term “All Hallows” which translates to “All Souls” evolved somewhere along the way to the word Halloween. Much has changed over the last 2,000 years. Today, Halloween is a festive time focused more on children’s enjoyment. No longer do adults wear macabre costumes made of animal skins. Rather, the holiday today features excited children dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters and superheroes merrily going from house to house collecting bags full of candy. How ever you choose to celebrate Halloween, make sure it’s fun and safe.

Bahamas Support Flows From Broward County But Much More is Needed BY TERRY JAILLET

S

outh Florida lucked out. As Hurricane Dorian lumbered toward us, local residents put up storm shutters, boarded up windows and purchased supplies. We cautiously watched digital tracking maps and made plans for possible evacuations. We were reminded, yet again, how important a Hurricane Kit is for families living in the tropics. Fortunately for us, the storm stayed east. Our neighbors in the Bahamas, of course, were not as fortunate. Hurricane Dorian will likely be remembered as the worst natural disaster in the Bahamas’ history. As of late September, there were still more than 1,000 people missing. The islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco still lacked basic infrastructure. And, thousand of residents remained displaced or living in shelters. The South Florida Bahamanian community, local charitable organizations and local business stepped into action immediately

following the storm. In fact, even before the storm left the islands, South Floridians were organizing supplies, raising funds and dreaming up logistics plans. Several small armadas of sail boats, yachts and ferries brought urgent supplies immediately after the storm. Bahamas Consul General Lind Mackey thanked the community but noted, “we are in urgent need of help. As a people, we are hoping to get past the next few weeks.”

It is believed that almost half the homes on grand Bahamas have been destroyed or severely damaged and more than 60,000 islanders are still in need of basic necessities like food and drinking water. Aid organizations have stepped in to provide longterm assistance as the islands begin to rebuild. You can help by: • Donating to the United Nation’s relief organization, UNICEF. Visit www.donate.unicefusa. org to help. • Donate to the Bahamas Dorian Relief Fund at www.bahamas.gov.bs • Donate blood to the Red Cross • Visit Charity Navigator at www. charitynavigator.org to find highly rated charitable organizations Another way to support the Bahamas is to visit soon. Tourism accounts for as much as 60% of Bahamanian GDP and about half of the jobs. As strange as it sounds, perhaps the best way to help our friends off the coast, is to pay them a visit soon.

Cold and Flu Season: Facts to Help You Through It As the weather cools during winter months, sniffles and coughs from colds and flu often rise. On average, adults get 2 or 3 colds a year. Between 5 and 20 percent of the general population comes down with influenza (the flu), according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “When you are looking at flu virus droplets that are so small — that spreading the virus by breathing in close proximity would be logical,” says Sergio Segarra, M.D., chief medical officer at Baptist Hospital of Miami and an emergency physician. “That, in addition to the virus living up to 24 hours on surfaces, makes it that much worse.” Besides getting your flu shot, doctors recommend the following steps to staying healthy during the cold/flu season: 1. Get adequate sleep. 2. Keep stress at bay. 3. Drink plenty of liquids, hot and cold. The peak of flu season often hits in February and March. Overall, the season typically starts in October and can last through May. The flu shot remains the best way to prevent getting the flu, doctors and public health officials say. They also say to be aware of where germs can be around you and wash your hands often. “Both the cold and the flu are caused by viruses, but each has different symptoms, duration and treatments,” says Deepa Sharma, D.O., a family medicine physician with Baptist Health Primary Care. Flu symptoms often include fever, muscle or body aches, fatigue and headaches. In children, vomiting and diarrhea are more common. young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease or lung disease, and people ages 65 and older. “The viruses that cause the flu are hard to predict, so we won’t always know what time of year they will become prevalent, or if there’s a particular region that experiences more cases,” Dr. Sharma adds. The flu virus spreads primarily by droplets formed when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. But a study last year found that coughs and sneezes may not be necessary to fill the air with droplets of the flu virus. The study, funded by the CDC and the National Institutes of Health, suggested that the flu virus can spread more easily than previously thought.

4. Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing. 5. Try not to touch your face, nose or mouth, especially during cold and flu season. 6. Be aware of where germs can be around you and wash your hands often. 7. Clean your screen! Keep cell phones, tablets and other frequently used electronic devices free of germs. If you find yourself sick with the flu, please visit one of Baptist Health’s neighborhood Urgent Care locations, or meet with a doctor online through the Baptist Health Care On Demand App.

Coral Springs Firefighters Turn Into Chefs to Support Cancer Awareness. NICOL JENKINS

J

oin the Coral Springs Fire Department as they host a Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner on Saturday, October 26th from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Station 80, located at 2825 Coral Springs Drive, North of Royal Palm Blvd., Coral Springs, Florida 33065. The event is open to the public and for a $5 donation attendees receive a generous portion of pasta, homemade firehouse sauces, salad, meatballs, Italian sausage, bread, a beverage and dessert. All food is made and served by firefighters, including our very own Chief Frank Babinec. Participants are treated to a tour of the firehouse, will learn about fire rescue equipment, meet firefighters and purchase t-shirts for the benefit. Kids will receive a firefighter helmet too. Donations once again will benefit the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund. The mission of the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund is to provide funding for breast care to women in the local community who are financially unable to obtain screening mammograms and

advanced high quality breast imaging and biopsies. Sadly, Lisa lost her battle with the disease earlier this year. Proceeds will also benefit the American Cancer Society and the Coral Springs Professional Firefighters Benevolent Association. The American Cancer Society is a nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer. The Coral Springs Professional Firefighters Benevolent Association assists in raising funds and providing awareness for local charitable events that offer a direct benefit to the people, person or organization in need. The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) adopted wearing pink during October for Breast Cancer Awareness for a number of years. What grew from that is support for more than just breast cancer, their efforts focus on all forms of cancer, according to Lynne Martzall, Public Information Officer for the City of Coral Springs. “To raise funds, the IAFF Coral Springs-Parkland

Fire Department members began hosting a yearly Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner at Station 80 nine years ago. Each year the dinner has grown and residents look forward to seeing their favorite firefighters while raising money for a good cause,” said Martzall. The local firefighters are in support of bringing awareness to cancer and those affected. The local Department has been personally impacted by cancer. “Members of the Department were deeply impacted by cancer when they lost their close friend and fellow firefighter Paul Pietrafesa, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2016; he was just 48 years old,” said Martzall. The Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner continues to grow each year. “Each year members look to increase the amount of dinners served with a goal of 1,500! So come out and support your local firefighters and community in their fight against cancer!” added Martzall. For more details on this event, visit their website at CoralSpringsFireFighters.org.

Enjoy a Family-Friendly Haunted House in Coral Springs BY NICOL JENKINS

B

ring your entire family to a Halloween Haunted House in your backyard. Children and parents will be dressed up in costume as their favorite superheroes, prince and princesses, TV and movie characters, and more! Enjoy a weekend filled with Halloween fun! The Coral Springs Haunted House will be held on Friday, October 25th from 5 pm to 7:30 pm and Saturday, October 26th from 2 pm to 7 pm at the Coral Springs Gymnasium, located at 2501 Coral Springs Drive. Children will wander through a non-scary haunted house that weaves through the indoor classrooms and then have a chance to play on bounce houses and slides. There is also a themed room for the youngest visitors. Trick-or-Treaters can take a walk through the haunted rooms and will get their share of candy as they

leave. Costumes are encouraged! Refreshments may also be purchased during the event. “Since its inception 30 years ago, the Coral Springs Haunted House has been a fun event for the local community,” said Lynn Martzall, Public Information Officer for the City of Coral Springs. “The Coral Springs Haunted House started 30 years ago as an outdoor, fun family event in our City parks. As

the event grew, so did the need for a venue that was weather-proof, so in 1990, the City moved the Haunted House to the Coral Springs Gym and expanded its hours,” added Martzall. The event is great for children and offers fun activities, games and interaction with City staff.

“The City enjoys providing a safe environment for children to celebrate Halloween,” said Martzall, adding, “The goal is to ensure that children who walk through our “non” scary Halloween Haunted House have a safe and enjoyable time.” The cost of the event is $5 per child and $2 per adult. This event is age appropriate through the 5th grade. n For more information on the City of Coral Springs Halloween Haunted House, call Parks and Recreation at 954-345-2200.

Salvation Army Holiday Angel Tree Program Accepting Family Requests BY TERRY JAILLET

A

re you a family in need or know of a parent that has fallen on hard times? The Salvation Army of Broward County is now accepting family requests for participation in its Angel Tree Program. The nonprofit organization’s signature holiday initiative provides gifts to underserved children ages 10 and under. Financially challenged parents looking to brighten their children’s holidays may visit The Salvation

It works with several other agencies in our community to identify and qualify those families who need the most help. Families who meet the guidelines for assistance will be notified for program participation. Their children’s holiday gift wishes will be become “angel” ornament tags that decorate holiday trees strategically located throughout Broward County, as well as listed on a special virtual Angel Tree

Broward amazon.com online registry. Donors fulfill these requests and deliver them back to Angel Tree locations or have them shipped via amazon.com. Gifts purchased are sorted and organized by volunteers and then prepared for Toy Shop distribution in December. The Salvation Army of Broward County’s Angel Tree Program is only part of the nonprofit organization’s holiday efforts to help those less fortunate. It also hosts free Thanksgiving meals, in partnership with The Cheesecake Factory, for hundreds of families with few resources and raises critical funds for feeding, shelter and social service programs for area residents through its traditional Red Kettle Bell Ringers. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Settlement, Mediation and Collaborative Divorce Keep Your Family Matters Out Of Court www.bjblawyers.com

2019

BY NANCY K. BRODZKI, ESQ. ivorce is difficult under the best of circumstances. Even Judges will tell you that you are better off resolving your differences out of court rather than letting a Judge decide. Litigation in court is expensive, time-consuming and can have a devastating emotional impact on both you and your children. In court, you get a very limited amount of time, and the Judge, a complete stranger, gets a limited amount of information to decide what the rest of your life will look like. The most cost-effective use of an attorney’s time is in preparing your case for a settlement out of court. Settlement negotiations, mediation and collaborative practice are three processes that are available to resolve your case outside of court. Many cases are resolved by negotiation, mediation or collaboration before a case is ever filed with the Court. Not filing with the Court right away gives the parties the most flexibility since there are no court deadlines to worry about. Direct settlement can take many forms, from the parties working together around the dinner table to both parties having attorneys and negotiating around a conference table. Sometimes the attorneys will negotiate through email and telephone calls. Direct settlement is likely the least expensive option to resolve family law cases. Mediation before anyone files the divorce case often takes on a different look than mediation within the context of litigation. Instead of a single marathon mediation session lasting 8 or more hours, pre-suit mediation is often broken up into smaller blocks of time, tackling different issues in each session. This is far more tolerable for the clients, who can find themselves overwhelmed and drained in marathon mediations. Having time for reflection regarding the options being considered is another benefit to this kind of mediation, instead of feeling pressured to “get it done right now.” The neutral mediator facilitates the discussions and helps generate creative solutions for the family to consider but does not give legal advice to either client. It is preferable for each client to have their own attorney to consult with for advice and strategy throughout the mediation process. Collaborative Divorce consists of both parties having their own attorneys, who work together in a cooperative, team approach to develop the financial and family picture of the parties and help them reach a full and comprehensive settlement. Ideally the team includes a facilitator who is a mental health professional to guide the settlement discussions, address emotional issues, and be the truly neutral voice in the room. In many cases, a financial professional is included as part of the team, whose role is to be responsible for vetting financial options and educating the parties on the financial circumstances of the family. The team works together to assist the parties in reaching a fair and equitable settlement for the family. Keeping your family matters private while working together on a settlement that works for everyone is the best reason to avoid the courthouse and a litigated divorce. It helps you and your family transition to your new reality in a way that helps preserve what was good, minimize what was bad, and move you forward in your new life.

Faierman Holistic Spa and Wellness Center, Dr. Tamy Faierman has been working for nearly two decades to create a new methodology for self-care in the modern age. Combining the most cutting-edge procedures from Western medicine with time-honored traditional practices from around the world, she offers patients an integrative approach to beauty and wellness that supports their changing needs through the different stages of their lives. Dr. Faierman shares more about her unique approach and practice. How would you describe your practice philosophy? I believe beauty and wellness are interconnected, meaning when we align the inner and outer body by taking care of ourselves, we not only look better, we feel better too. In my practice I take an integrative approach with the aim of addressing the totality of a patient’s health and wellness goals – from the inside out.

invasive procedures like injectable fillers, radiofrequency (RF) and other technology that help to lift and sculpt the face, procedures today have become safer, and there’s now far less postoperative downtime for healing. As a result, we’ve seen cosmetic surgery become much more widely accepted,

Holistic Plastic Surgeon Dr. Tamy Faierman is transforming beauty and self-care from the inside out. increasingly regarded as one of a set of tools – alongside clean beauty products, nutrition, exercise, spiritual practice, and others – that people can consider as part of an overall health and wellness plan that contributes to “aging consciously.”

What is your background? I was born in Israel to parents from South America and at the age of eight we moved to New York City, where I was ultimately raised. I grew up speaking Spanish and Hebrew at home, and by age nine I was also fluent in English; later on I learned French. I think having this early exposure to other cultures and languages ultimately helped give my practice its global mindset. It also shaped my overall integrative beauty and wellness philosophy, which borrows from many different traditions. Where did you receive your medical training? My medical training in the U.S. focused on both general and reconstructive surgery. I graduated from The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and did subsequent surgical training at Montefiore/ Albert Einstein Medical Center, where I trained in General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Microsurgery. What would you say have been the biggest changes in cosmetic surgery in recent years? Thanks in part to the rise of minimally

What does it mean to be a “holistic” plastic surgeon? As our ideas about wellness evolve, alternative medicines and treatments are becoming more widely available and accepted, and people are finally seeing the many ways health and beauty are interconnected. I believe in complementing the very best surgical techniques with treatment plans that include natural

medications, homeopathy, and ancient healing practices like meditation, acupuncture, lymphatic drainage and massages. In doing so, I believe you can maximize healing, ease pain and discomfort, and enhance relaxation and stress relief. I also work with trusted practitioners— from ob/gyn’s and general surgeons to holistic aestheticians, acupuncturists and nutritionists— to address the full spectrum of my patients’ needs. Ultimately, my holistic approach is about empowering the individual to take control of their body through acts of self-care. I want my patients to glow from the inside out. What services does your practice offer? I perform a range of aesthetic surgeries including eyelid rejuvenation, breast contouring, liposuction and the more comprehensive set of procedures named the “mommy makeover,” which has become one of my specialties. I also offer non-surgical, non-invasive procedures, like dermal fillers, injectables such as Botox and Sculptra, and treatments such as combined radiofrequency and microneedling, a treatment for aging skin which improves fine lines, lifts the jowls and neck, and decreases the appearance of acne scarring by stimulating new collagen growth. But what really distinguishes my practice from many other traditional plastic surgeons is my “whole-body -beauty” approach to beauty and wellness, which is why I created the Tamy M. Faierman Holistic Spa and Wellness Center. Here we foster personal transformation — combining the best of Eastern and Western medicine to advance self-discovery and well-being. We offer holistic facials, herbal teas and tinctures, clean beauty products, and integrate a range of healing practices from guided meditations in our beautiful meditation room, to acupuncture, to rejuvenatinging massages.

What’s your best beauty and wellness advice? I always teach my patients that our body, emotions, and mind are connected. So when it comes to beauty and wellness, strive to marry the three. Nutrition, exercise, and emotional well-being are parts of a healthy lifestyle. Only when we align the inner body with the outer body are we able to truly reconnect with ourselves. n Dr. Faierman’s office is located at 17130 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1, in the Windmill Professional Campus. Her office hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. For more information about Dr. Faierman, please call at 954-322-2742 or visit her site at www.reshapeyourimage.com.

Coral Springs Update THE CITY OF CORAL SPRINGS COMMISSION

O

ctober 1 is the start of a new fiscal year and on September 18, the City of Coral Springs Commission voted on and adopted the FY 2020 budget. The budget process is complex, Commissioner Shawn Cerra, Commissioner but vital to City operaLarry Vignola, Mayor Scott Brook, Commissioner Joshua Simmons and Vice Mayor Joy Carter tions. To assist residents in better understanding their tax dollars at work, we created a video series. Learn more about the City’s budget and strategic plan at coralsprings.org/budget. It’s been a few weeks since Hurricane Dorian threatened South Florida. We all breathed a sigh of relief that Florida was spared a direct impact. Our friends in the Bahamas were not so fortunate. As South Florida has experienced in the past, the rebuilding of communities will take time and money. Raising funds to benefit their relief and rebuilding is our greatest priority and a long-term commitment. To assist in our mission, we partnered with the Coral Springs Community Chest, Inc., a non-profit organization, to raise funds. Learn about our efforts by visiting coralsprings.org/donate. We have many fun, family-friendly events taking place this fall in Downtown Coral Springs. Artoberfest will celebrate German culture, entertainment, food and beverages on October 5 from 2-10 p.m. Savor the Notes on October 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., sponsored by Broward Health Coral Springs, will feature jazz music, food from local restaurants, as well as cooking demos. Both events offer free parking, remember to bring a lawn chair or a blanket! Bring your creatively dressed kids to our family-friendly, Halloween Haunted House at the Coral Springs Gym (2501 Coral Springs Drive) on Friday, October 25 from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, October 26 from 2-7 p.m. The Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department will once again host their annual Cancer Awareness Pasta Dinner at Station 80 (2825 Coral Springs Drive) on Saturday, October 26 from 4-8 p.m. All are welcome and for a $5 donation, attendees will receive a generous portion of pasta, salad, bread and drink. The food is prepared by and served by firefighters, including our very own Fire Chief Frank Babinec. Donations benefit the Coral Springs Firefighter Benevolent Association and the American Cancer Society. There are many other activities during October, including those focused on safety and seniors. Be sure to visit coralsprings.org/events or text the keyword CORALSPRINGS to 888-777 for updates. Our Commission Meetings for October will take place on the 2nd at 9:00 a.m. and 16th at 6:30 p.m. in Commission Chambers (9500 Coral Springs Drive). As always, if you would like to schedule an appointment with your City Officials, call 954-344-5911.

Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY ctober is the start of our City’s 2019/2020 fiscal year. The approved budget can be found at www.cityofparkland.org/budget. The City’s budget is a financial representation of our collective priorities. Thank you to all the residents who participated in surveys and town hall meetings and reached out to us to offer your input on our FY19/20 budget. In Parkland we are fortunate to have an extremely involved and responsive City Commission that values resident input. It is hard to attend any event in the City and not see one of us there. Please know we all want to hear from our residents and our contact information can be found on the city’s website at www.cityofparkland.org/commission. This month, the City of Parkland hosts Government Day for all the third grade students who attend schools located in Parkland. As part of this day, the students learn about the Parkland Library, police and fire services, recycling and the role of local government. ood day, everyone. We are almost there! The hurricane season ends November 30th, and while Hurricane Dorian gave us a scare, let’s not let our guards down quite yet. If you remember, Hurricane Wilma hit us in October 2005 and anything is still possible. Margate’s heart goes out to the victims of Hurricane Dorian and all the affected islands in the Bahamas that were devastated. Not only our hearts, but our wallets opened to people of Abaco and the surrounding areas. Staggering amounts of water, food, clothing, toiletries, batteries and more were donated. “Together We Make It Great” and we showed the spirit that exemplifies the residents of Margate and we at City Hall are so proud of everyone who pitched in. Please remember, these storms seem to be getting stronger and for those who still haven’t … get hurricane protection. One of these times, it will be our turn. Bulk and Yard Waste Only Collected Curbside Starting on October 1st, Margate residents will no longer have access to the Broward County Drop-Off stations for the disposal of bulk trash and/or yard waste material. However, residents can still access the Broward County DropOff stations for the disposal of household hazardous waste and electronics waste. Residents who receive curbside garbage collection now haave bulk and yard waste collection every week on their first garbage collection day. Residents from multifamily communities should contact their property management office for information on the disposal of bulk trash. For more information, please call the Department of Environmental and Engineering Services at (954) 972-0828. Acceptable medications include: Prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and pet medicine. For a list of acceptable medications, please visit margatefl.com. Fall Festival Set for October 26th Mark your calendar! The City’s Annual Fall Festival, hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department, is set for Saturday, October 26th from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Margate Sports Complex, 1695 Banks Road. Each year, thousands of Margate residents - and visitors from our neighboring cities - make their way to the Margate Sports Complex for an evening of family fun. Festival-goers will enjoy a concert, and seasonal activities such as a not-so-scary Haunted House created by the Margate Police and Fire Explorers, line dancing, hayrides, pony rides, a petting zoo, costume contests for all ages, pumpkin carving contests (bring your own carved pumpkin), scarecrow building contest, and interactive programs for young children. Arts and craft vendors will showcase their wares and food vendors will be on-site to satisfy your taste buds. Calling all vendors! Preregistration is required for all food and craft vendors. MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF: MARGATE

Safety First CHIEF JON SHAW ctober is a favorite month for our kids because of Halloween, and as parents our job is to assure they have fun, but do so in a safe manner! I’d like to go over several safety tips to help you prepare for a successful trick-or-treating! When coming up with costume ideas, the most important factor to consider is visibility. Try to choose light-colored costumes that are easily seen, or be sure to add reflective stickers/tape. Glow sticks and flashlights are also great tools to use – have them carry them or use the necklace version. Costumes should fit correctly to avoid tripping hazards. Lastly, if the costume includes a mask, make sure it fits correctly or consider using face paint instead to avoid obstructions of vision. Children should always be accompanied by an adult while trick-ortreating, especially those under the age of 12. If you feel your children are old enough, and mature enough, to trick-or-treat without adult supervision, make sure they stay together in a group of friends at all times! Also, your children should stay in areas they are familiar with, and avoid exploring other neighborhoods unless accompanied by an adult. Prior to your children trick-or-treating, go over traffic safety with them! Remind them that it’s dark out and not everyone is driving as cautiously as they should! Halloween presents several visionary obstructions and distractions that can easily cause a driver to lose focus, such as: cars parked in areas they normally aren’t parked, Halloween decorations and costumes, several people out and about, and many more! Your children should understand that horseplay isn’t acceptable, and that they should never run into the street or across driveways. They should always look in all directions, and use sidewalks, crosswalks, and traffic signals when available. If a vehicle is approaching, your children should make eye contact with the driver to assure they’re seen, prior to crossing any streets. Kids with mobile devices should keep them in their possession, and consider turning on their location if your mobile devices have the capability. They should avoid using the devices unless they have an emergency because they can also present a distraction! Make sure they are not listening to music or have headphones in their ears, so they can optimally focus on their surroundings. Halloween can be one of the most exciting times of the year for kids and their parents , if planned and executed correctly. You can never be overly prepared, and never take too many precautionary measures! Be safe, and be sure to make the City of Margate’s Trunk-Or-Treat event your first stop of your “spooktacular” night! The event is taking place at 5790 Margate Boulevard, from 4:30pm to 7:00pm, on Thursday, October 31st! We look forward to seeing you!

Peso loves his mom and follows her around however if anyone has food, he will gladly follow them around too. He loves to go for walks, sleep, and sit and watch our family of redfoot tortoises we also have as pets outside. He’d also rather drink from the hose outside than a bowl. Peso does not like when it rains outside, nor does he like other big dogs when he sees them on his walks. He only barks if he wants to you to pet him and then minute you do, he stops. He’s loving and sweet and we are happy to make his senior years his best.
