“I Was Walking
Two Days After Robotic Surgery.”
- Mark, Prostate Cancer Survivor
RETURN TO THE LIFE YOU LOVE When Mark visited his doctor for a routine checkup, he didn’t expect to learn he may have prostate cancer. He had no symptoms and no family history of the disease. Blood tests and a biopsy confirmed Mark had prostate cancer. His urologist, Michael Tyler, MD performed advanced minimally invasive robotic prostate surgery on Mark at Broward Health North.
“I was relieved and surprised with the surgery because within two days I was walking and had minimal pain,” Mark said.

Thanksgiving Traditions, Old and New BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET
T
2018
hanksgiving has grown to mean so many different things in America. It, of course, started as a somber day to give thanks for all that we have and to celebrate a bountiful harvest. Tradition suggests that the American holiday commemorates a turkey dinner shared by English Pilgrims and members of the Wampanoag tribe somewhere near Cape Cod in 1621. While the historical accuracy of this story may be hard to determine, the underlying message is worth remembering. Giving thanks often gets overlooked these days. Our always-on, always-connected and increasingly adversarial culture becomes consuming. We see young people glued to their phones, older folks angry about the latest political developments on cable news, and parents frustrated and tired, stretched thin between work, kids’ activities and more. For these reasons, it’s more important than ever to spend time with family, friends and neighbors. Giving thanks and sharing with our loved ones and neighbors is really what the holiday is all about. There are few groups in history more distinctly different than 15th-century English religious refugees and Native Americans. Yet, they could sit down together for a meal and give thanks for all they had. Maybe we should do the same.

T
he Taste of Coral Springs returns to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Join your community on Tuesday, November 12th with a retro 1980s theme and samplings of the best food, wine, craft beer and spirits in the area, all to benefit local children’s charities. The 2019 Taste of Coral Springs is presented by Benefits in a Card, Powered by Benefits Wizard. This year, we will bring your best ‘80s memories back in a new wave – by dancing under the stars to fabulous live bands including the Steve Pomeranz Band, the Shane Duncan Band, and Chill Factor, as well as DJ Joey Scot. There will also be silent auction items, including vacation, golf and gift baskets, all benefiting Coral Springs Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, Coral Springs Museum of Art, and YMCA of South Florida.
“This is the 20th year of the Taste of Coral Springs. The goal of this event is to raise funds for the charities and the theme this year is Retro ‘80s,” said John Arnold, Taste of Coral Springs Committee Chairperson. The Taste of Coral Springs takes place at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and pre-sale tickets are $50 prior to the event. Ticket prices at the door are $60, and VIP Tickets are available for $75 each, which allow guests early admission at 5:30 p.m. to get the first samples of the delectable foods from local restaurants and beverages from vendors and distributors, all of which are included in the admission price. “Each year the Taste of Coral Springs brings together the best food and beverage samples in Northwest Broward County, and has raised more than $471,000 for children’s charities in the area. All
of the proceeds go directly to the charities, whom are deeply involved in the planning of the event,” said Arnold. “The Taste of Coral Springs has grown from a small sampling event to filling the Center for the Arts with more than 35 sampling tables, live bands, and a huge silent auction. The event brings together the community, with the singular goal of raising funds to help children in need in Coral Springs – giving back to our city and having fun while doing so!” The Coral Springs Center for the Arts is located at 2855 Coral Springs Drive. For online tickets and more information, visit TasteofCoralSprings.org. ook your tickets for this spectacular extravaganza. This fabulous production is always a sell-out. The Nutcraker, best-loved holiday classic, wows young and old with its delightful tale, unforgettable classical music score by P. Tchaikovsky, and magnificent dancing. The story tells of a young girl who falls deeply in love with the nutcracker doll given to her by her grandfather, the mysterious magician, Dr. Drosselmyer. The party with family and friends is enjoyed by everyone. Marie tries to protect her beloved toy from her jealous brother but, alas, the evening is horribly spoiled by his actions. Scary mice appear at midnight and a battle ensues between a Giant Rat King and the Nutcracker. Incredibly, her beloved toy comes to life as the handsome Cavalier Prince, and they are transported through the glittering snow to the Kingdom of the Sweets. Together, Marie and her beau meet the royalty of the Land who reappear as the Dewdrop and her flowers and crown her as their beloved leader. The Grande Pas de Deux transforms Marie into the mystical Sugar Plum Fairy as her handsome Prince leads her in dance. The captivated audience is left asking the question, “Was this really all a dream?â€? Each performance showers the audience with joy and lifts the spirits of all.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Coral Springs and Parkland Continue Farmers’ Markets BY NICOL JENKINS
C
oral Springs and Parkland residents can look forward to another season of fresh produce and baked goods at the Farmers’ Markets. The Coral Springs Farmers’ Market, sponsored by the Community Redevelopment Agency, returns to the City at its new location, the corner of Coral Hills Dr. and West Sample Road, located at 9551 West Sample Road. The Farmers’ Market will be held on November 10th and November 24th from 9 am to 1 pm. The market has once again expanded its produce and will feature over 65 vendors selling fresh baked goods, organic breads, seafood, cheeses, sauces, spreads, sweet treats and much more. “We are excited to kick-off our fifth season at the new location in Coral Springs. In addition to our expanded produce selection and the return of our favorite vendors, we have exciting events for kids, starting with bounce houses,” said Market Manager Colleen Sullivan. “The Coral Springs Farmers Market relationships are characterized by a handshake. The hand that pulled the tomato, fed the chickens, and formed the cheese is the hand that accepts customers’ money, answers questions, and seals a handshake contract: This food is good and clean and safe. I know, because I grew it and I eat it. When it comes to supporting the farmers market, there is a role
for all members of the community. The more the residents are engaged and attend weekly, the more vibrant the market will be. The success of the Coral Springs Farmers Market relies on our residents and their continued support,” added Sullivan. The Parkland Farmers’ Market began in 2006. This year’s first market date is Sunday, November 3rd and it runs from 9 am to 1 pm. There will also be a Farmer’s Market with a Craft Fair on November 17th. Customers will be able to purchase items such as fresh and organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, beautiful flowers, breads, pastries and other baked goods. They also feature a variety of gourmet foods such as jam, honey, dips, sauces, fresh pasta, cheese, and pickles. The market is dog friendly
so don’t forget to visit our pet vendors! During the November and December Farmer’s Markets, they will offer several specialty Craft Fairs and will have vendors selling holiday related items. “The mission of the Parkland Farmers’ Market is to contribute to making our City a healthy community. To do this, we provide a community gathering that offers a wide assortment of conventional and organic fruits as well as an abundance of gourmet food items. The market offers spices, coffees, teas, sauces, and dog treats. Much of which is made and can be enjoyed on site. We also feature specialty market days such as craft fairs, health and wellness fairs, and pet day,” said Todd DeAngelis, Chief Communications Officer for the City of Parkland. This continued growth reflects the desire for the community to engage in local food producers to purchase fresh produce and food products directly from our local vendors. It also allows an opportunity to bring our community together, interact, meet neighbors, and have fun in the great outdoors of South Florida,” added DeAngelis. Local Humanitarian Gives “Back” in a Big Way BY BEVERLY PERKINS

ot too long ago, Tamara Miami-Dade passing out food and basic Callins-Young created a social supplies to those on street corners. media page on Facebook titled Her latest endeavor has been creat“Random Acts of Kindness -RAOK” in ing backpacks for the people in Abaco an effort to teach her children how important it is to show kindness to everyone especially those less fortunate. The page has since inspired others to get involved and build a positive platform for future generations. Although Callins-Young says she cannot cook, she wanted to feed the homeless. Pasta was always a meal she made well, so she managed to serve up a spaghetti dinner from the back of her truck. Since that day her humanitarian deeds have not ceased. She travels around South Broward County and who lost everything due to Hurricane Dorian. She drafted a plan to collect backpacks because it could serve multiple purposes. It could be easily carried by both children and adults and be the perfect place for storage. “I believe I was born a humanitarian seeing my mother welcome people
into our home, helping them get on their feet, and caring for eleven foster children. So, I just did what came naturally. Watching the news and seeing the aftermath of the storm and the living conditions of the Bahamian men, women, and children really touched my heart and I knew right away, what I had to do,” said Callins-Young. Through the help of her Facebook friends and family members the altruistic Plantation resident collected backpacks, air mats, non-perishable groceries, towels, washcloths, and hygiene supplies to send to those people who lost everything. She contacted Chris Allen, owner of Air Flight Charters, who did not hesitate to help. Allen and his crew have been making deliveries directly to the citizens of Abaco and Treasure Cay two-three times a week free of charge. Gandhi says, ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ I say, smile or make someone smile, change or be the change in someone’s day,”

Children Helping Children: Harvest Drive Serves Thanksgiving Dinner Again BY TERRY JAILLET
L
ocal schools are partnering with Harvest Drive, Inc. to make sure local families don’t go hungry for Thanksgiving. The organization, in partnership with more than 170 Broward County public schools and many area private schools will provide a week’s worth of groceries plus a gift card or perishable items to ensure 2,400 families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. 500 of the families are also given the opportunity to “shop for free” at Harvest Drive November Boutiques. The recipient families select gently worn clothing and shoes, gently used
books and household items for their entire family. With generous donations, Harvest Drive is now able to also provide a selection of new toys. Students at participating schools have been collecting non-perishable items, household goods and grocery gift cards. Collections began October 21 and will end November 8th. The items will be consolidated at 14 school-based distribution sites to ensure that recipi-
ent families receive 6-10 bags of groceries in time for Thanksgiving. The mission of the Harvest Drive, Inc. is to promote the concept of philanthropy to Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students by providing the opportunity for them to give back directly to their community in a basic and meaningful way. Students working in conjunction with community partners provide food and other necessities including gently used clothing and household items to Broward County schools’ families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday and throughout the year. The Harvest Drive strives to educate students on the issue of hunger in our community and empower them to take leadership roles in lessening hunger’s devastating impact. Members of the local community is encouraged to volunteer or donate canned goods and non-perishable items.
Local schools serving as distribution sites include: • Coconut Creek High School • JP Travavella High School • Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy • Westglades Middle School For more info or to become involved visit www. harvestdriveflorida.com or call 954-651-0772

Best Friends Help Team USA Bring Home the Gold BY JON DUKA
Life-long best friends, Spencer Butt and Brandon Barriera helped the USA Baseball 15U National Team take home the gold at the 2019 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-15 Baseball World Cup America in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. The American Heritage Academy classmates teamed with 18 other boys from around the country for the tournament. The team won eight of nine games on their road to victory. The win marks the fourth consecutive U-15 Baseball World Cup Qualifier gold medal for the red,
white and blue (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019), and the third straight international title after the 15U National Team won its first-ever world championship at the 2018 WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup.
Spencer, a freshman who resides in Davie, and Barriera, a sophomore from Coconut Creek, started their adventure in Houston Texas, where the team met for training and two scrimmage games. Following the short training camp, the team jetted off to Mexico for the tournament. Brandon is a pitcher. He started one of the games during the tournament against Panama. He went 4 1/3 innings and recorded four strikeouts during the contest. Spencer pitches like his friend, and also plays in the middle infield. He is just 14 years old and will be eligible to play on the National team again next year. The USA Baseball National team is one of the most selective teams in the sporting world. Just 20 players make each of the seven age-based teams nationally. More than 3 million American youth play baseball every year. Having a close friend to share the experience with made the tournament even more special for Spencer and Brandon. Team Manager, Troy Cameron commented, “this group of guys represented our nation in the best way possible… they are great teammates, work their tails off and went no-stop until we brought home a gold medal.” Spencer, who is only 14, will be eligible to play
on the U-15 team again next year. This is his second experience playing on a USA Baseball National Team. His experience, undoubtedly, will be extremely helpful for him and his teammates in the future. Both boys look forward to helping American Heritage back to the 4A state championship game again in 2020. Last year the Patriots lost to Calvary Christian in the state championship, 2-1.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Sometimes the Tried and True Way is Still the Best Way– Obtaining Lawful Permanent Residence Today BY ANDREA R. JACOBS, ESQ.
W
ith all of today’s news, we are constantly seeing how the immigration laws are in a state of flux. People are trying to cross the border in hope of a better life. Families are being separated and people are being detained. Literally, the laws are changing daily with respect to asylum, detention and even employment immigration. But one thing has remained the same over the past thirty odd years, the most straightforward way of obtaining employment based residency is through the labor certification process. The labor certification process also know as PERM requires a US employer to test the labor market to ensure that no available US worker would be displaced by hiring a foreign national. This is accomplished through a multi-step process where a prevailing wage is first obtained through the Department of Labor to ensure that the wage being offered is fair. Next, the employer is required to advertise the job opening in a newspaper of general circulation on two Sundays. Then, the employer must post a notice of job availability at their place of business and electronically, if they normally post this way. Finally, the employer must open a job order with the State Department of Labor for a thirty day period. Once this recruitment period has ended, the employer is then required to interview any applicant that meets the core job requirements. If there is an available US worker, then the labor certification will not be approved. However, if there is no viable US worker, the labor certification application will be certified, and the employer can then file for an immigrant visa petition for the alien worker. The immigrant visa petition is processed through the USCIS Service Center having jurisdiction over the employer’s place of business. Most employment based cases are eligible for premium processing which means that the case can be processed within 15 days for an extra fee. Then, the case is either forwarded to the National Visa Center for processing at a Consulate abroad, if the foreign national is living outside the US, or it will stay with USCIS for adjustment of status in the US. In order to be eligible to adjust status in the US, the foreign national must be legally residing in the US under a valid visa. In most situations, these cases take about 1.5-2 years for the visa to be issued. However, some countries have extreme visa retrogression and take longer. The best part of using the labor certification process is that the alien will be able to permanently reside in the US with his or her family and have lawful employment when they relocate here. This process applies to almost every position imaginable from a professional (where there are additional advertising requirements) to a factory worker. We have been assisting employers for almost thirty years with corporate immigration. We have used the labor certification process as a staple as this is the most tried and true method for an employer to secure a permanent visa for a foreign national.

The market will be open the second and fourth Sunday of most months from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through April 2020. For exact market dates, vendors and entertainment, visit www.coralspringsfarmersmarket.com. The popular Bites-N-Sips food truck event returns to the great lawn of City Hall on Friday, November 15 from 6- 10 p.m. With an expanded selection of culinary and great entertainment this is an event you will not want to miss. One the most honorable things we as a City Commission can do is participate in the City’s Veterans Day Ceremony. This year it will be held on Sunday, November 10 at 10:00 a.m. at Veterans Park (located at 8601 Royal Palm Blvd., just east of University Drive). There are many other activities in November and December, including fun, family holiday fun. Be sure to visit coralsprings.org/events or text the keyword CORALSPRINGS to 888-777 for updates. We hope our residents enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday with family and friends. If you plan to travel, the Coral Springs Police remind you to sign up for the Vacation Watch program by calling (954) 344-1800. To qualify, your home must be vacant for a minimum of five days. Our Commission Meetings for November will take place on the 6th at 9:00 a.m. and 13th at 6:30 p.m. in Commission Chambers (9500 Coral Springs Drive). As always, if you would like to schedule an appointment with your City Officials, call 954-344-5911.

ASK THE SHERIFF
Celebrating Our Diversity BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY t the Broward Sheriff’s Office, we’ve come so far since the first African American, Deputy James Primous, joined the ranks in 1951. We’ve made great strides in diversifying the agency at every level to reflect Broward’s vibrant melting pot. As a person who has experienced inequality firsthand, I understand the importance of diversity in public safety. In order to serve Broward citizens to the best of our abilities, we must mirror our communities. Failure to do so — a problem public safety agencies have historically faced — often leads to avoidable consequences, including a lack of understanding, communication and, ultimately, distrust. I believe what makes us different as individuals make us more complete as a whole. And I am committed to making our entire agency more reflective of Broward County. I have increased the hiring of minority deputies and firefighters, two areas where minorities have been underrepresented in the past. Today, more than 60 percent of the agency is comprised of minorities — greater than the percentage of Broward as a whole. More than 40 percent are African American; in addition, nearly 20 percent are Hispanic. BSO also proudly employs many strong, dedicated women — who have made up more than half of our recent promotions — and people from a diverse set of religious beliefs and sexual orientations throughout the agency. We’re accomplishing all this through a variety of means, from greater outreach to communities that have been underrepresented in the past to the creation of new initiatives, mentorship and scholarship programs that reach our youth and promote careers in public safety. BSO now has the most diverse command staff in the agency’s 104-year history. Recently, I had the distinct honor of promoting Colonel Nichole Anderson as the first African American and the first woman to serve as undersheriff in the agency. I have also had the pleasure of naming BSO’s first two colonels of Cuban descent, Colonel Oscar Llerena and Colonel James Reyes. Make no mistake, however. These leaders are not in their positions because of the color of their skin, gender, religion or sexual identity. They were promoted because of their qualifications. Collectively, they have devoted decades of selfless and dignified service to BSO and the citizens of this great county. When I became sheriff, I promised to do what was best for the agency and bring forth the best personnel to keep our communities safe. We have so many talented people in this agency, and so many are worthy of positions of leadership. What I have done is simply level the playing field for everyone and provide qualified individuals an opportunity to rise to the top. As always, we are looking for good men and women to join our team. If you think you have what it takes, visit us at jobs.sheriff.org.

Chicken Wings: From Our Home to Yours Cooking crispy chicken wings, that are as good as those you find in a restaurant, isn’t as hard as you might think. Here is our favorite, easy recipe. Enjoy!
Ingredients Chicken Wings:
• 4 pounds chicken wings (cut into drumettes & flats) • 1 tablespoon of baking powder (our secret ingredient) • 1 teaspoon onion powder • 1 tablespoon garlic powder • 2 teaspoons salt • 2 teaspoons ground pepper
Buffalo Sauce:
• ½ cup butter or margarine • ½ cup your favorite hot sauce
Directions
1. Pre-heat oven to 450 2. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place a wire rack over the sheet. We use a cookie cooling rack. 3. In a small bowl, combine all of the dry ingredients. Whisk well to combine. Note: the baking powder is key to crispy wings! 4. Place wings in a large mixing bowl. Pour dry-ingredient mixture over and toss. Ensure the wings are evenly coated. 5. Lay the wings on the rack, making sure they are not t0uoching. 6. Bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. 7. While wings are baking combine the butter and hot sauce in a small, microwave-safe bowl. Cook on medium for three minutes or until the butter is melted. Wisk with a fork. 8. Remove wings from oven and toss immediately in the sauce. OURCITYMEDIA.COM | OUR CITY | MONTH 2019 41

42 MONTH 2019 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
Every year, the Interfaith Coalition of Coral Springs and Parkland hosts a Pre-Thanksgiving Interfaith Unity Service where clergy and people from all different faiths come together to give thanks. It is a wonderful service that reminds us that we are all connected and that we are all in this journey together. The service is a beautiful opportunity to join the community, reflect and give thanks. This year’s service will be on Tuesday, November 26, at 7:00pm at First Church Coral Springs at 8650 W. Sample Road in Coral Springs. I hope you will be able to join us to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday. With our hectic schedules it’s not often we have any extra time in our days. Thankfully, we “fall back” and pick up an extra hour on November 3, so don’t forget to set your clocks back. This month take a moment to stop, take a breath, notice the good things around you and think about what you’re thankful for. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you and this wonderful city. Wishing you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving! If you have any questions or concerns, you can always reach me at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org. I look forward to hearing from you.
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: MARGATE
Margate Update MAYOR ANTHONY N. CAGGIANO ood day. Are you starting to get in the holiday spirit? I know I am! Our Fall Festival was a huge success, and I hope you were there to enjoy it. Our second annual Trunk or Treat was very well attended. I love November; the temperature is cooling down and Thanksgiving is upon us. We, in Margate, have so much to be thankful for: Margate was ranked the 7th safest City, with a population over 50,000, in the State of Florida. Margate ranked higher than our neighboring Cities. I am so proud of our award winning Fire and Police Departments and so should you. I am also hopeful that our City will be able to partner with Coral Springs to enhance our 911 call system, which will reduce response times and enhance our standard of living. Remember, the next call could be for you, a family member or a friend. On that note please act responsibly on the road this holiday season, let’s all arrive alive. Recycle Right! No Plastic Bags or Food Waste in Cart The City of Margate has the second highest recycling contamination rate in Broward County (of the cities that Waste Management services), and we need your help to reduce it. Please DO NOT put plastic bags, food waste, clothing, or yard waste in your recycling cart. Also, please DO NOT bag your recyclables. For more information, go to margatefl.com/recycling.

The battle to defeat them and restore harmony to the LEGO universe will take Emmet, Lucy, Batman and their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds, including a strange galaxy where everything is a musical. It will test their courage, creativity and Master Building skills, and reveal just how special they really are. CHIEF JON SHAW can’t believe the holiday season is almost here! Many of us have already started shopping for gifts and making travel plans to visit family. We can all agree that the holidays are undoubtedly the most hectic time of the year! In the midst of the hustle and bustle, be sure to take the necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy through it all. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you enter the holiday season. When Traveling This Holiday Season If driving out of town to spend time with your loved ones, plan ahead and do a vehicle inspection before you hit the road – check your tires, breaks, and fluids. Be aware of your speed and keep a safe distance between your vehicle and other vehicles - especially in heavy traffic. When Shopping/Mall Safety When you’re out shopping, stay alert - especially when you’re in parking lots. Don’t linger. Be aware of others around you and keep your keys in hand as you walk towards your vehicle. Do your best to park your car in well-lit areas and make sure your valuables are not in plain sight inside your vehicle. When shopping online use credit cards instead of debit cards. Print and save all order confirmations, tracking numbers, and names of customer service representatives that you spoke with or corresponded with. Be sure to optimize your security settings and change your passwords often.

Package Delivery Security Tips Get to know your neighbors! It seems like packages being stolen from someone’s doorstep is a common news headline these days. If you have a concern about these wrongful activities in your neighborhood, be sure to ask a trustworthy neighbor to be on the lookout for and hold onto delivered packages until you get home and can pick them up. Another option would be to have packages delivered to a store or convenient pick up location. Amazon prime members can use package lockers as a delivery location. The lockers are available in over 1,800 cities. Decorating Tips Holiday decorations are a great way to add joy to this festive season. When decorating your home, be sure to inspect all electrical cords for damage and look out for any loose wires. Tips for the Kitchen Test all smoke and fire detectors, and replace old batteries. Keep a fire extinguisher close by, and unplug appliances when they’re not in use. Keep lids close by as they can be used to smother small grease fires. November and December are busy months for all of us, and the Margate Police Department wants to be sure that our community is happy and most importantly, safe through the holiday season. Happy holidays!
