Varicose Veins? Might be More than Meets the Eye BY JOHN BRODIE

S

offer Vein and Vascular, a division of the Soffer Health Institute, specializes in treatment for varicose and spider veins. Dr Ariel Soffer is a Nationally Recognized Vein Expert and board certified Cardiovascular Specialist. If you experience restless legs, numbness, tingling, cramping, burning, swelling or an achy feeling in your legs the Soffer vein experts can help. It is quite common for these symptoms to develop as men and women age. Besides the discomfort it can make you want to hide your legs as spider veins and varicose veins become very visible. Lymphdema (a condition that occurs when the network of vessels, veins and arteries that circulate fluids through is not functioning properly) will cause swelling and damage to the skin. Fortunately these conditions are all

treatable. For many years people have had to go to Soffer’s facility in Miami for treatment but Soffer Vein and Vascular now has a locationsin Deerfield Beach, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Aventura, North Miami Beach and Hialeah/Miami Lakes. Dr. Soffer is a clear leader in his field. For several years he was featured in the ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion.” Adam Kustin, a company spokesperson commented, “In this field, he is as good as it gets, yet the man is so kind, so warm and so approachable, it has spawned the growth of this practice. You want the best,” said Kustin. “Two people can walk in with the same bulging vein issue, but there’s no way to tell if either has any real underlying health issues. It’s more than just cosmetic.” This is why it is so important to see someone with the appropriate expertise and not someone merely offering a cosmetic fix. “Sometimes people aren’t bothered by the bulging vein but they experience achy, very tired legs, numbness or restless legs and they never associate these “symptoms” with varicose veins. That’s why seeing a doctor as qualified as Dr. Soffer and his staff becomes so vital.” Treatment is usually simple. “And painfree,” Adam added. “Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. The new lasers are very low risk, super accurate and extremely effective. We can also inject saline. It depends on the severity.” Adam continued stating that Dr. Soffer “wants to help people prevent these life-threatening issues BEFORE they take a toll. Before they compromise how a patient lives life. He SEES people pain free,

enjoying life again who didn’t even know it was possible for them. They never connected the dots, he does.” If you are experiencing any pain or swelling in your legs or want to get back more youthful looking beautiful legs, Soffer’s signature minimally invasive vein treatments are a great solution. Soffer Vein and Vascular with six locations will provide a Complimentary vein screening available by appointment only for new patients 18 and older. Patients can discuss their concerns with the Soffer medical staff and review their best options for treatment. There is no obligation to pursue treatment. Most insurances are accepted. Dr. Soffer plans to open a Weston location next. Members of his staff speak Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese.

Hurricane Season is Here Again

2

017 was, by far, the costliest hurricane season in United States history. More than $282 billion of damages were caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Many of us in South Florida are still feeling the impacts of Hurricane Irma. The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, especially in Puerto Rico, will have long consequences. Fortunately, 2018 is expected to be less active than 2017. Colorado State University hurricane researchers predict the 2018 hurricane season to be slightly more active than normal, with a predicted 14 named storms in the Atlantic basin. This is a far cry from last year’s two and half times more active environment.

It Only Takes One Storm According to the Tropical Cyclone Landfall Probabilities tool developed by researchers from Bridgewater State University and Colorado State, Broward County has about a 35% chance of having a hurricane make landfall this year and about a one in five chance of a major hurricane making landfall. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ▸▸ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ▸▸ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information and water. ▸▸ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in the case you lose power and water supply. ▸▸ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed. Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer.

Local MMA Team Learns More Than Just Combat BY JOHN BRODIE

f you’ve lived in South Florida for the past 25 years and have been involved in the martial arts, you have probably heard of Sensei Roger Krahl. Going back to 1993, he was one of the owners of East West Karate in Coral Springs which was at the time the largest martial arts school in the country. Fast forward two and a half decades to 2018 and you will find him still developing talented students as Head Coach at American Top Team of Sunrise. Sensei Krahl has had tremendous success training several World Champions including current UFC Women’s Bantamweight World Champion Amanda Nunes. He has coached at the highest level of combat in the UFC, Bellator and M-1 Global. With his years of coaching accomplishments, Sensei Krahl still believes his most important role is as a coach and mentor in the positive development of our youth.

Martial arts are not only about physical training. For Sensei Krahl it is about developing the core values of integrity, respect, self-discipline, dedication, courage, honor & compassion. Students as young as three years old learn Student Creed Number One before learning how to stand in a basic guard stance: “I will respect myself and my fellow man.” They recite this creed at the beginning of every class. This is the type of training that only a teacher with a lifetime in the martial arts will produce. Sensei Krahl proudly states his objective in training: “Not just champions in the ring or cage, but champions in life.” The Wolfpack competition team is made up of kids from 6 – 17 years old. The team represents what we call the 2% of students that want to enter into the competitive arena. The majority of the students do not compete but still get the benefits of the highest level of training available anywhere in the

world. Our program is designed to develop the character of our children. The team’s last competition was the ISKA Strike First Championships at South Plantation High School. “Many of our kids won first place in their divisions competing in both sport MMA and kickboxing. As a team we wanted to do something greater than just win more trophies. We decided that all the entry fees from our team would be donated to Meadows Movement to help build the Princess Playground. I am

eager to help kids feel more confident and encourage values that will make our schools safer places,” commented Sensei Krahl. It is people like Sensei Roger Krahl, a father who has raised his children here as a member of this community for 25 years, who will partner with other families in the Coral Springs and Parkland area to work to keep our community the positive place it has always been to build our future.

Grab Your Poles for the Parkland Youth Fishing Derby BY NICOL JENKINS

C

ast your line for a great time at this year’s Parkland Youth Fishing Derby. The summer is the perfect time of year for fishing. Don’t miss the Parkland Youth Fishing Derby, which will be held on Saturday, June 16th at the Pine Trails Park fishing pier, 10555 Trails End, Parkland. Check-in will start at 7:45 am, and the sounding of a horn will start at 8 am with a finish at 10 am. The Fishing Derby is open to all kids, ages 3 to 12. Anglers can win awards for the biggest fish, smallest fish, and most fish caught each event. Remember to bring your fishing poles, buckets and bait! Each fish caught will be weighed and prizes will be awarded. The summer series of the Parkland Youth Fishing Derby is on the following dates at the Pine Trails Park Fishing Pier: June 16, July 14 and August 11. The City of Parkland invites the community to come out to this family event. “The goal of the Parkland Fishing Derby is to bring the community together and promote outdoor recreation in Parkland. We want to encourage spending quality time with family, friends, and neighbors. Focusing on nature, unplugged from technology for a little while,” said Alexandra Valle, Parks and

Recreation Special Events Coordinator for the City of Parkland. The Parkland Youth Fishing Derby is also an educational event for local youth. “There are many benefits from the Parkland

Fishing Derby for the local youth and their families. They can learn a new hobby that they may not have tried before and meet new people in the community. It encourages learning about species of fish, what to use as bait, how to cast a line, and much more. The friendly competition is always a fun time as anglers can win trophies for biggest fish, smallest fish, and most fish caught at each event,” said Valle, adding, “Residents in Parkland love to fish and they have shown interest in having an event where everyone is welcome to fish together. The Pier at Pine Trails Park is a perfect location with a large fishing pier and open space on the surrounding shoreline.” Bring your child, neighbors, friends and the entire family to this year’s Parkland Youth Fishing Derby. “This is a good summer event because it is early enough in the morning that participants can enjoy the chirping birds and calm scenery before it gets too hot in the afternoon. Many people travel and have lots of plans during the summer months, so we do not require registration, and anyone can show up and enjoy fishing with their community,” said Valle.

Coconut Creek Celebrates 18th Annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway BY HELEN PENLAND

E

ach year, on the last Saturday of April, the City of Coconut Creek observes Arbor Day with a Free Tree Giveaway held at the Coconut Creek Government Center (City Hall). This year, people, including the Mayor and most City Commissioners, attended the 18th annual event held on April 28th from 8:00 a.m. until noon. However, those who aren’t early birds should not be worried they’ll miss out on their tree or shrub of choice. You can come as late as 9:30 or even 11 a.m. to get something you like. 2018’s giveaway included nearly 600 trees and 1,300 plants. This year, they ran out of all trees and shrubs by noon. The original program was the idea of Sheila Rose, the Director of Sustainable Development/Assistant City Manager. Urban Forester Sharon Vollmer has organized the event since its inception. The purpose of the tree giveaway is to promote the city’s initiative to increase Coconut Creek’s tree canopy and encourage residents to create wildlife habitats in their own yards. In the early years of the giveaway, the city only gave away trees with informational brochures on tree planting. Then over the years, they included shrubs as well. Now, the city also includes several educational

booths and information stations where attendees learn about green living and many other related topics. They also added a new booth to help participants learn about what plants attract birds and butterflies. They began with just a few volunteers, but the number has increased throughout the years. For the last several years, the number of staff and volunteers grew to approximately 100 people. The Tree Giveaway concentrates on offering native and non-invasive species. Participants had the opportunity to speak with master gardeners and learn to identify which plants are invasive such pothos. There were booths regarding tree planting, pruning, and care in addition to composting. Linda Whitman, Senior Planner, who was stationed at the Planting and Tree Care booth stated, “I was impressed with how attentive the residents were relative to learning how to care for their trees.”

shade from the sun, fuel, and building materials. The very first Arbor Day was launched on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska City by Julius Sterling Morgan, a newspaper owner who challenged Nebraskans to plant as many trees as possible in one day. On that day, an estimated one million trees were planted in the state. Morgan was also agriculturalist and served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under President Grover Cleveland. In March 1874, Arbor Day was observed on April 10th. Eventually, the commemoration was settled on the last Friday of April.

The Tradition Continues

The Beginning of Arbor Day

Today, dozens of countries celebrate Arbor Day on different dates depending on their climate and planting season. Each state in the United States observes it based on the same criteria.

The young state of Nebraska was in dire need of trees to act as windbreaks, keeping soil in place,

Doberman Rescue League Holds 5K Run & 1K Dog Walk Fundraiser BY HELEN PENLAND

T

he Doberman Rescue League held the 2nd Annual Paws for a Cause 5K run and a 1K dog walk fundraiser at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek on April 15th. There were about 300 registrants, most of them runners or speed walkers. The weather wasn’t promising, but it didn’t throw them off a bit. The Doberman Rescue League consists only of volunteers, most of whom work full-time jobs but are willing to give their expertise, time, love, and open their residents to help find permanent homes for Dobermans in need. Some dogs are turn-ins because of the owner’s inability to care for them any longer, some are strays or from shelters. Others come to them for a variety of other reasons.

The Race The Paws for a Cause 5K was the brainchild of Joelle Macklin, a runner, a volunteer, and event coordinator for the race. She felt it was a great way to raise awareness and funds for the dogs, as all of their capital comes from events and donations.

This year, there were about 300 registrants. The event began at 7 a.m. sharp, ending about 9:30 a.m. According to one runner, just before the last few participants approached the finish line, the skies opened up with cold, torrential rains. But spirits weren’t dampened! Patience paid off and after waiting a bit, the rain stopped, and the 1K Dog Walk commenced. Unfortunately, because of the weather, many of the people left before the awards were presented. But, the League was prepared and made arrangements for any “winner” who contacted them to receive their award. Theodora Zugajewicz, a longtime speed walker and runner said, “It was a great race today. I pushed for a good time, and it paid off. I came in 3rd in my age group and achieved my best time since an injury 18 months ago.”

More about the Doberman Rescue League, Inc. The League ensures all their dogs are up to date with shots, testing, spayed, or neutered.

Some arrive injured, ill, or abused and require extensive veterinary care, taking a longer time to prepare them for a “forever home.” All their dogs are in foster homes or a local boarding facility that works closely with the League. Joelle stressed, “Our biggest expenses are our boarding costs and paying for Veterinary services as many of our rescue dogs come to us with heart worms, fractures, and tick-borne illnesses which are very costly.” They have a very supportive group of followers and volunteers. Planning an event is a challenge with many moving parts. But volunteers work together like a well-oiled machine and manage to provide a wonderful experience. ASK THE EXPERT

Considering Removing Your Breast Implants? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

E

vidence shows that breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure that results in higher patient satisfaction with their breasts and enhanced psychological well-being. Despite this, an increasing number of women are electing to remove their breast implants. In 2017, more than 45,000 breast implant removal procedures were performed – a twenty percent increase over the previous three years. The impetus to undergo breast explantation is multi-factorial ranging from implant related complications like implant rupture, hardening (capsular contracture) or breast pain, to large breasts with size dissatisfaction to autoimmune symptoms which patient’s attribute to their breast implants. After the implant is removed, the breast can appear empty or “deflated.” To avoid this unaesthetic result, the breast can be lifted (mastopexy) and volume can be restored with the patient’s own fat (autologous fat transfer) or by rearranging or reshaping the breast with adjacent breast tissue, a so-called augmentation. All these techniques have been shown to be successful in plastic surgical literature. When the implants are removed, patients are often pleased with the aesthetic outcome and report very high patient satisfaction rates. Additionally, in a Journal of Immunologic research in February 2017, it was noted that in numerous studies, patients with symptoms of breast pain, muscle aches, and fatigue had reduced symptoms once the implants and capsules were removed. In this same article, blood markers for autoimmune disease were unchanged after implant removal in the majority of patients. There is an extensive body of medical literature demonstrating that breast augmentation with both saline and silicone implants is safe without a direct link to autoimmune disease. The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is a highly personal one, and therefore treatment options should be individualized based on each person’s unique aesthetic goals. If you are considering breast augmentation, a breast implant exchange or replacement, or implant removal, it is important to discuss your goals with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Messa is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and has achieved the award Black Diamond with Allergan. As a Black Diamond Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Messa is in the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. To learn more about Dr. Messa and his practice, visit his website at www.westoncosmeticsurgery. com. His office is located at 2823 Executive Park Drive in Weston. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Divorce Made Easy, Inc. Helps Clients Dissolve Marriages Quickly and Inexpensively

M

any people think getting a divorce has to be a difficult, expensive process. Attorney AnnMarie Giustibelli, doesn’t believe it has to be that way. Giustibelli, explains how her firm helps people through the process fast and as painlessly as possible. Please describe what Divorce Made Easy, Inc. is all about. Once you and your spouse have come to the decision that your marriage is irretrievably broken, your next choice is how to dissolve your marriage. At Divorce Made Easy, Inc. we can help you proceed in an efficient, quick and inexpensive way that will not destroy your family and your bank accounts in the process. What are your qualifications? I am a Florida Supreme Court Certified Mediator and a licensed family law attorney in practice since 2002. When did you open Divorce Made Easy, Inc.? I established the firm in 2014. What kinds of services do you provide? We help clients resolve all of their divorce related issues in an informal, pleasant atmosphere and formalize agreements in writing. If you are parents, Florida courts require that you have a parenting plan. You and your spouse will discuss and make a plan that is in your children’s best interests. In addition, Divorce

Made Easy will assist you and your spouse in dividing your assets and liabilities equitably. If there are alimony issues we will discuss and resolve those as well. Finally, we will help you calculate child support according to the Florida child support statutory guidelines. In the event that you and your spouse would like the assistance of an impartial family therapist, communication facilitator and/or a neutral forensic accountant, we will quickly make these services available to you from our network. Once you have made these decisions, at Divorce Made Easy, Inc. we will prepare

all of the pleadings and necessary documents to file with the court so that all you and/or your spouse have to do is attend the final hearing. What distinguishes you from your competition? We tailor design your divorce process to suit the needs of you and your family. Whether you require my services alone to help you resolve your divorce issues or whether the assistance of a neutral mental health professional and/or neutral forensic accountant would be helpful additions to your process, we can accommodate those needs professionally and efficiently, saving your family thousands of dollars in litigation fees and costs as well as time and heartache associated with the traditional litigation process. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you and/or your firm? If your goal is to resolve your divorce in a pleasant, informal atmosphere where you will never have to step foot inside a courthouse until your final hearing, give us a call. n Divorce Made Easy, Inc. is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are located at 8551 West Sunrise Blvd., Suite 301 in Plantation. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 954-476-7111, visit www.divorcemadeeasy.net or email info@ divorcemadeeasy.net.

Sacred Art Tour at Coral Springs Museum of Art BY NICOL JENKINS

E

xperience cultural teachings and art unlike any other in your own backyard. Eight Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery, students of H.H. Dalai Lama, will visit the Coral Springs Museum of Art from Tuesday, June 5th through Sunday, June 10th. This six-day visit will entail traditional cultural teachings and artistic expression. The Coral Springs Museum of Art, 2855 Coral Springs Drive, is one of the locations that the monks will visit on their 2018 North American Goodwill Tour. Attendees will experience ancient Tibetan cultural rituals of dance, sacred chants and prayer as well as the renowned sand mandala construction and deconstruction ceremony. The Sacred Art Tour is part of the monk’s mission to spread the message of peace, loving kindness, wisdom, and compassion while sharing their traditional Tibetan arts and culture. The Sacred Art Tour also wants to bring awareness to the ongoing plight of Tibetans after 50 years of occupation. This event will raise donations to help support their way of life at the Monastery in southern India. Funds raised through this tour supplement housing, meals, and educational materials for anyone wishing to study at this monastic center of higher learning including orphans and

refugees fleeing occupied Tibet. They bring teachings of ancient ways and beliefs that do, even now, create the possibility of global peace, nonviolent conflict resolution, compassion and wisdom.

“This program introduces new cultural experiences for the community and provides an opportunity for deeper understanding,” said Julia B. Andrews, Executive Director of the Coral Springs Museum of Art. During their stay, the monks will devote each day from 10 a.m. until closing time, constructing the renowned sand mandala. Sacred Tibetan practices and chanting open and close each day. During the

opening ceremony on June 5th at 1 pm, experience a symbolic walk through our peace garden and into the Museum’s main gallery led by the monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery. The monks will perform a blessing of the space with chanting and traditional instruments. Once completed, they will begin marking and measuring the mandala. Artistic workshops feature the painting of Tibetan peace symbols on stones called Mani Stones, the ancient art of butter sculpture and coloring Tibetan designs for children. Cultural pageantry presents costume, ritual dance, song, and chants. There are a variety of events to choose from including Meditation and Dharma Hour: Spend time alongside the monks and the mandala in silent meditation, then soak in the wisdom of a dharma talk where you will learn about the universal truth that all monks live by. Don’t miss a once in a lifetime cultural culinary experience! Observe the preparation of an authentic, traditional Tibetan meal and share it with the monks of the Drepung Gomang Monestary. Momos (dumplings) are a treat you won’t soon forget! Some events require ticket purchase or preregistration. Space is limited for workshops and culinary events. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Margate Update CITY OF MARGATE MAYOR ARLENE R. SCHWARTZ reetings! One of my greatest pleasures today is sharing with you the wonderful and welldeserved recognition that several of our public schools have recently received. Although we know our Margate schools are great, I am delighted that their commitment to creating a safe school environment that promotes academic excellence is being recognized nationally. Last month, Liberty Elementary STEM Museum Magnet School received the President’s Magnet School of Merit Award of Excellence from Magnet Schools of America (MSA). The President’s Award is the organization’s third highest honor bestowed on behalf of the President of MSA. This isn’t the first award Liberty Elementary has received. The school has also received the National Magnet School of Excellence award (2016 & 2018), and the Golden School Award for 15 consecutive years. In addition, Magnet Schools of America also presented Atlantic West Elementary with the Magnet School of Distinction award for their high academic standards. Atlantic West is a “Sprouting STEAM Museum Magnet School” offering science, technology, engineering, arts, and math with hands-on project-based learning in every classroom. Margate STEM Magnet Middle School did it again! For the second year in a row, Margate Middle has earned the tremendous honor of being named National Champions of the Vocabulary.com competition. Each year, Margate Middle School students use the website, vocabulary.com, to improve their language and reading skills. They compete against 38,000 middle and high schools across the country to see who can master the most vocabulary words, and they WON! The City of Margate is extremely proud of the students, teachers, staff and administration of each of these schools and congratulates them for their amazing acknowledgements and commitment to excellence! The City also has good news to share. I am pleased to announce that Governor Rick Scott and the 2018 Florida Legislature have appropriated $1.5 million to support two City projects in this year’s budget. The State has budgeted $500,000 for the Sewer Piping Rehabilitation (Cured-In-Place) project, and $1 million for the replacement of Fire Station 58. Special thanks to State Representative Kristen Jacobs and Senator Perry Thurston for their sponsorship of these City’s projects. On Sunday, May 27th, we kicked off a new event series called Groove+Green. The event takes place the second and fourth Sunday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of Margate Boulevard and State Road 7. Hosted by the Margate Community Redevelopment Agency, Groove + Green has live music, brunch offerings, a pop-up marketplace, and special event features. Come ready to shop small and local. In the farmers’ market area, you’ll find local food purveyors selling local produce, unfiltered honey, fresh breads, cured pickles and olives, artisan jams, live plants, prepared specialty foods, vegan options, and other small batch products. In addition to shopping, attendees can also relax and enjoy brunch from food trucks and food stands set to music. Each event will showcase local musical acts, DIY projects, garden workshops, and other entertainment. On the second Sunday of the month, Groove + Green will feature a car show.
