It’s Time to Go Back to School

S

ummer is coming to an end even earlier this year! August 15th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. So, for parents, that means it is time to stock up on school supplies, help your child pick out that lucky lunch box, and remind him or her to finish their summer reading list.

It’s also time to register for after school enrichment programs. There are a myriad of different activities and opportunities, with everything from sports to music and everything in between. Parents also have choices in how their kids are educated. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, a parent must now decide between enrolling their child at their local school, charter school, private school or online learning. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational and enrichment programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to language lessons to Little League. The material has been curated to provide parents with a useful guide to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year. In the meantime, enjoy the last couple weeks of summer break. We’ll be back to school before you know it.

Coral Springs remembers 9/11 with 5K Run/Walk BY NICOL JENKINS

W

ith the 17th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 attacks approaching, the City of Coral Springs continues their commitment to honoring the victims and fallen heroes who were taken from us that day. On Saturday, September 8, the City will hold the Coral Springs Remembrance 9/11 5K Run/Walk starting at the Coral Springs Northwest Regional Library, 3151 University Drive, at 7 a.m. Get your tickets now to participate in the City’s 4th Annual Remembrance event. “In addition to promoting a healthy family event, the purpose is to acknowledge all of the first-responders who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001. It also allows participants to run alongside police and fire personnel – often in full gear - as a way to show support of their contributions to the communities they serve,” said Kelle Burke, Event Organizer. The event continues to bring together the local communities with one common goal. “As with all tragedies, it is so important to carry on

? P E LE S ’T N CA

the American spirit of camaraderie and kindness. This run and the charity it supports – Concerns of Police Survivors – is a testament to the goodness in our community,” added Burke. There will be awards given out to the top three overall male and female, as well as the top three male and female in age-appropriate categories. Team awards will also be given out to the top fire rescue department, top law enforcement department, top EMT paramedic department and top club. Registration is $25 for adults, $15 for students 19 and under, and $20 for emergency service personnel. Everyone who completes the 5K will receive a finisher medal and t-shirt. Be sure to use the hashtag #csremembers when talking about the event on social media. “The City of Coral Springs is committed to never letting the tragic events of 9/11/01 and its effect on our nation’s history – specifically first responders and their families - fade. Just as the City worked to establish a memorial at the North Broward Regional Library, this 5K Run/Walk is another way to recognize and honor the lives of those so deeply affected by 9/11. All participants will receive a t-shirt and a finisher medal. Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female categories – top finishers in age categories - as well as team awards to the top fire rescue and police department finishers,” said Burke.

The City is also hosting the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit, which is housed in a 1,000 square foot trailer. The exhibit is a tribute and educational tool that travels across the country. The exhibit will visit Coral Springs for residents and students on September 11 and 12th. The exhibit will be located in the parking area between the Public Safety Building and Coral Springs Gymnasium, located at 2601 Coral Springs Drive. Pre-scheduled students from Coral Springs schools will visit the exhibit each morning, with public viewing on September 11 from 2 to 8 pm and on September 12 from 4 to 8 pm. ■ To register for the Remembrance 5K Run/Walk, visit the website at www.itzevents.com.

f you live in South Florida and have any interest in dance, the odds are pretty good you already know the name. With four Broward locations, including two serving Northwest Broward, Dance Theatre has become a prominent part of our community, one fabulous dancer at a time. Accolades? Of course. Dance Theatre has been awarded the prestigious “Reader’s Choice” and “Best in the West” awards multiple times. Trophies? Thousands. Dance Theatre’s elite team of competitive dancers, DTX, receives top awards and overall high scores at virtually every competition they attend. Testimonials? You bet. Just ask any mother in the carpool line and they’ll tell you that Dance Theatre has been like a home away from home for their children. So what is it that makes this place so special? “My answer is always the same,” says owner and Director Michelle Gerlick, “We build beautiful, safe, clean facilities, hire the best teachers in the business, and treat each child that walks through our doors as if they were our very own.” “Awards are nice, certainly, and our trophies are beautiful,” Michelle continues, “but that’s not what we strive for. We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate. It is incumbent upon us to do it effectively. We train exceptional dancers, yes, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models that are so important to our students as they mature. We work hard, we have passion, and we care deeply about the impact we have on their lives. When a parent tells me their child has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. That is why we do this.” Michelle certainly has the pedigree to run one of the nation’s most successful dance programs. Her mother Joan was a Rockette, a June Taylor Dancer, and half of a performance duo, along with her husband Bob, which thrilled audiences the world over working with the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Tony Bennett.

Michelle holds both a degree in Dance from Ohio State University, and a degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern. Her professional credits include performing as a Miami Heat Dancer for the NBA, a “Fly Girl” on Fox Television’s In Living Color, and an NFL Super Bowl Choreographer and Dancer. Michelle has since led her students at Dance Theatre to The Summer Olympics, The Super Bowl, and The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, among countless other extraordinary venues. Still not convinced that Dance Theatre is THE place for your young dancer to train? Consider this...they offer a truly comprehensive program where dancers ages 3 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline. They include the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, acrobatics, musical theater and pointe, as well as specialty classes like strength and flexibility, leaps and turns, etc. In addition, dancers who excel and aspire to become dance professionals may join either their performance company, DTC, which provides entertainment at amazing venues like Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins games, or their elite competitive team, DTX, where they can travel to local, regional and national conventions and hone their skills against the best from other schools. Under the direction of Danielle Mednick, the 2018 Onstage America Teacher & Choreographer of the Year, Team DTX has taken the Miss Junior, Miss Teen, and Miss Senior titles, and just returned from Nationals where they won the Challenge of Champions with their performance of “Secret Annex”. n For those interested in joining the Dance Theatre family, there are several ways. First, you can visit their web-site,www.dancetheatre.net, choose your location, view the Fall Schedule, and register online at any time by filling out the simple form. Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund Raises $10.5 million for Victims and Families BY TERRY JAILLET

V

ictims of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are now eligible to receive funds collected by the Broward Education Foundation. The Foundation’s Stoneman Douglas Victims Fund officially stopped receiving donations on June 30th. It plans to disperse payments to victims as quickly as possible. “We already know from the application process that there are many victims and families that were impacted. We intend to give them as much financial support as we possibly can,” said former U.S. Senator George S. LeMieux, chair of the steering committee. “Together we can make a difference.” The donations are gifts given to the victims without any restriction on their use. “Obviously, there is no amount of money that can replace a loved one,” said Cristina Fischer, Broward Education Foundation Board Chair. “But we believe that the victims and

families are in the best position to determine how these funds would be most beneficial to their healing.” According to the foundation, the families of each of those killed will receive $400,000. Victims who were wounded will receive an average of $90,000. Benefits will be tiered based on the length of hospital stay or outpatient status. All the students and faculty who were present in the 1200 building during the shooting are eligible for $2,500, while everyone else present on the campus is eligible for a $1,000 gift. More than 37,000 people donated to the campaign. 100% of the average $283 donations is being given to the victims. There were 1,654 applications submitted with 1,517 of those received funding. Disbursements began the week of July 16th. n For more information visit browardedfoundation.org

MSD Races to Complete Installation of Portable Classrooms BY TERRY JAILLET

Procuring the portable units has been a race against time. South Florida building code requirements are some of the most stringent in the country. Finding a vendor who could meet the code requirements and with the manufacturing capacity to build and deliver 34 units by early August was a challenge. The District selected manufacturer Mobile Modular, one of the largest modular building manufacturers in America, in part for its ability to deliver within the needed timeframe.

I

The classrooms will be located in back of the school, near the athletic facilities. They will be a welcomed temporary by teachers who were forced to share classrooms during the second half of the 2017/2018 school year. In addition to the buildings, the school district will also be procuring new furniture and classroom supplies. Demolition of the 1200 Building is not expected to begin any time soon even though the school district has received $25 million to demolish and rebuild it. It is being secured as evidence for the upcoming trial and will likely not be demolished until litigation concludes.

n the wake of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (MSD), Broward County Public Schools was faced with a more mundane challenge than the many awful choices the community has been grappling with: How to replace the 30 classrooms previously housed in the now-closed 1200 building. To meet this need, BCPS procured 30 modular classrooms in an expedited procurement process. There will also be two units dedicated to student counseling as well as two restroom units.

TIP 3: Pick a Theme that is kid friendly.

Make sure it’s age appropriate when coming up with a themed party. Ask you rchild if they have a preferred theme such as a superhero party, arts and crafts, music related or favorite Disney character. Check your local party store or online for decorations to match the theme!

TIP 4: Write down the guest list. To make sure you don’t over invite, jot down the names of attendees you and your child want to invite to the party. Be sure to base the number of guests on the space. If it’s an outdoors park or your backyard, the guest list can be of larger scale. If an indoor event or location based, limit

the number of guests accordingly.

TIP 5: Make sure the Timing is Right. It’s typically best to host a child’s birthday party over the weekend

when they are not working on homework or have afterschool activities. When planning the time for the party, make the event last not too short or too long; two to four hours is a good time frame for kids birthdays. Be sure to plan plenty of activities and fun games to keep the guests busy during the entire party.

TIP 6: Find creative and interactive Games. When lookingfor kid friendly games, search for activities that will keep the children active, learning and interacting with one another. If the birthday party is at your home, some favorite activities include a potato sack race, a photo booth, face painting, abounce house, musical chairs and many more! When planning you child’s birthday party, it’s good to get some help during the big day.Ask your close friends, family members or other parents if they can assist with set up, volunteer during the event with activities and with taking photos, and to help close down theparty. This will be a big weight off your shoulders and help youto enjoy the moment and savor the special memories.

Selecting the food for a kid’s birthday can seem like a trying task. But kids are typically not picky eaters. Most like simple food, such as pizza or chicken fingers. Be sure to ask their parents though if anyone has food allergies. It may be a good idea to pick a variety of food options for the kids and parents to

TIP 10: Hand out memorable party favors. Be sure to thank your guests with unique party favors so they will remember your child’s special day. Some cute ideas for party favors include art kits, coloring books, themed stickers, pictureframes and custom stationery. Whatever you decide to do for your child’s birthday, make it aspecial day that everyone will remember and one that your child will cherish!

TIP 7: Choose fun and trusted entertainment. When booking entertainment for a kid’s birthday at your home, search for entertainment companies that have good reviews and have been recommended by friends. Feel free to ask them

Save the date for the Back to School Splash Bash! The event will take place on Saturday, August 18th from 10 am to 1 pm at Equestrian Center at Temple Park, 8350 Ranch Rd. Parkland. This free family friendly event will feature fun in the sun with many water themed activities, inflatables, slip and slides, music, games, crafts, and more! Admission is free and bathing suits are required.“This will be our third year hosting this event. The goal of the Back to School Splash Bash is to offer a free, safe, family friendly community event that everyone can enjoy. We will have a variety of activities for the kids to enjoy including: water slides, inflatables, music, games, crafts, food, and more,” said Alexandra Valle, Special Events Coordinator of Parks and Recreation for the City of Parkland. This event is open to all ages! There will be an area dedicated to toddlers, along with some games and sports geared for the older kids.

This event is a good way for the local students to meet new people and ease the Back to School jitters. “We love to see the community meeting new people and getting together with their old friends they may have missed over the summer. It is a great way for the parents to catch up as well,” added Valle. Many local businesses will also sponsor the event and hand out goodies for those who are in attendance. “We have many local businesses as sponsors that will participate with a booth at the event to hand out goodies and be available to explain what their business has to offer. This is a

great way for people to see what their local area has to offer,” explained Valle. The community event continues to grow each yar and the City hopes more students and families will attend this year. “We wanted to host a fun, community event that celebrated the kids going back to school for a new year. Get your child prepared for Back to School NICKOLE JENKINS

I

t’s almost Back to School for local students, and there’s no better way to start the school year off right than to plan ahead for the first day back. The first day Back to School for Broward County students will begin on Wednesday, August 15. While students are looking forward to seeing their friends, they might be nervous about starting back in a new classroom with a different teacher or at a new school. Parents can help ease the back to school jitters by using these helpful tips.

30 AUGUST 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

Get familiar with the school! If your child is attending a new school, visit the campus so your child will know how to navigate their way around the school. Start early in all areas of back to school from bedtime to mealtime and homework time. Start back with earlier bedtime hours a few weeks before school starts so they can get adjusted to the new schedule. Also, start the healthy breakfast routine now so they won’t be craving junk food! Establishing schedules for homework, dinnertime, TV and sports times also helps. Arranging play times for your child and their classmates to meet before the start of school will help them get excited to go back with their friends. Back to school safety is vital! Children should know who to contact in case of an emergency. Students should also be aware of traffic safety if walking or taking a bus to school. Research the bus times and routes, know the bike and walking paths or chart out your carpool plans ahead of time! Bullying is also an important conversation to have with your children. They should know how to report bullying instances, and be aware that it is okay to talk about what happened if they were bullied or witnessed bullying. Go Back to School shopping earlier this year! The earlier you shop, the better the deals on school sup-

plies and clothing. Make sure you check the list first before buying supplies because some teachers require specific supplies. Also, be aware of the school’s dress code and what your child can and cannot wear during the school year! Now is the time to check with your school on any changes to their policies, as well as to find their suggested donation list for school supplies. Don’t wait till last minute! After care or after school activities are also an important part of the preparation process! Know the dates and times for after school sports practices, games or after school club meetings so you can arrange pick-up or carpooling. If you need to utilize after care programs, some local schools offer this service at the schools, while others do not have the programs. Check with your child’s school for more information on aftercare programs, sports or club activities. Your child’s school website is an important resource. It is filled with dates, phone numbers and event information. Many times, the school’s website will be updated and announce school activities, half days and other essential information for students and parents. Be your child’s cheerleader and encourage them to have a successful school year ahead!

W

orld-class health care is now available right in your backyard. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s new Coral Springs Family Health Center provides a wide range of specialty care, outpatient surgery, endoscopy services, and advanced imaging capabilities all under one roof. “Opening the Coral Springs Family Health Center is especially important to me because I’ve called the Coral Springs-Parkland community home since moving to Florida in 1991 to join Cleveland Clinic Florida,” said Juan Nogueras, MD, FACS, FASCRS, MBA, Medical Director of the Coral Springs Family Health Center. “I’m proud to be a part of the team bringing Cleveland Clinic Florida’s high-quality care to this community and thrilled to have this beautiful facility in my own backyard.” The 73,000-square foot facility, conveniently located at the southeast corner of the Sawgrass Expressway and University Drive, features 40 exam rooms, six operating rooms, two endoscopy suites, and 24 prep and recovery bays. It will be staffed by approximately 130 physicians, clinicians and administrative staff. Services spanning 17 medical specialties are accessible at the new facility including breast, colorectal, general, gynecological, hand, orthopaedic, otolaryngology (ENT), plastic/reconstructive, urological, and vascular surgery. In developing the Coral Springs Family Health Center, Cleveland Clinic Florida made the patient and caregiver experience a top priority. It influenced both facility design and delivery of care and services. For instance, orthopaedic and sports medicine specialists can collaborate on the second floor with access to adjacent x-ray technology to streamline care. The Women’s Imaging Center offers advanced digital and 3D mammography, upright stereotactic breast biopsy, ultrasound and bone density, plus a spacious waiting area. In addition, the entire state-of-the-art facility was designed to maximize natural light in patient care areas, which research shows reduces recovery times and improves wellbeing. To make the registration process more efficient, there are seven selfcheck-in kiosks. A Micro Market provides a variety of snacks and convenience items. The Coral Springs Family Health Center is backed by Cleveland Clinic Florida, which is home to the highest ranked hospital in Broward County and was ranked No. 2 in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale metro area and No. 8 in Florida by U.S. News & World Report in its 2017-2018 America’s Best Hospitals report. The Coral Springs Family Health Center is located at 5701 N. University Drive. We believe that a compassionate, kind heart is what is needed to positively impact the world,” shares Andrea. “Kids Helping Kids will be a great way to show our kids, and others, how they can help their community.” Right now, the couple and their daughters are coordinating Kids Helping Kids’ annual school supply drive, collecting backpacks, composition notebooks, crayons, glue sticks, markers, folders and pencils to donate to disadvantaged students attending Royal Palm Elementary School in Lauderhill. Andrea, a former teacher, says this project is particularly meaningful to her. “One of my first teaching jobs was in a middle school here in Broward County. Many of my students did not have the school supplies necessary to complete their assignments. ou’re never too young to make a difference in the lives of others. That’s the main message of Weston-based Kids Helping Kids. The organization was started 12 years ago by Lisa Lerner as a means of teaching her own children the importance of helping others who are less fortunate. With her oldest child now starting college, Lisa has handed over the reigns to friend Andrea Saneholtz, whose two young girls are ready to learn this important life lesson. “My husband, Matt, and I want our girls to understand the power of kindness and the need to show

Andrea became involved with this organization after her oldest daughter was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy at age three. “The Food Allergy Heroes Walk recognizes the courage and determination of food allergy families and empowers these everyday heroes to end food allergy fears for good. Families and friends come together to unite behind their commitment to FARE’s mission to raise funds that will change children’s lives through research, education, advocacy and broad awareness,” explains Andrea. “Our goal this year is for Kids Helping Kids to have a presence at this walk, helping to make a difference.” To learn more about how you and your family can get involved with Kids Helping Kids email kidshelpkids411@gmail.com. The Value of Fat in Cosmetic Surgery BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long-lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants is not applicable, because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting-edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells, as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its long-term effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. 15 Local Students Receive Prestigious National Merit Scholarships BY STACEY BOMSER

F

ifteen local students have joined an elite club. They have all be recognized as National Merit Scholarship winners. Each year, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation honors the nation’s most academically talented students by presenting college scholarships. In 2018, approximately 7,500 distinguished high school graduates received scholarships totaling more than $31 million. Sydney Yu from Coconut Creek, Simon Hoo and Zihan Kabir from Coral Springs, and Carlee Goldberg and Brian Tobin from Parkland were five of only 2,500 graduating high school seniors nationwide to be named 2018 National Merit Scholarship winners. These highly gifted and talented students were chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Each received a $2500 National Merit Scholarship. Hoo and Tobin both attended Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. In recognizing Broward County Public Schools’ student recipients, Superintendent Robert Runcie stated, “We are very proud of the academic success of these outstanding students. This recognition will broaden their edu-

cational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of excellence.” Ten other area students were recipients of college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. These awards provide between $500 and $2000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. About 4,000 college-sponsored scholarships were awarded nationally. The University of Florida presented National Merit Scholarships to Vikasni Mohan of Coconut Creek, Chelsey Gerena of Coral Springs, and Aeva Jazic, Kenneth Lee, Melina Michel, Nikhita Nookala and Devon Wiesenfeld of Parkland. Jasson Makkar of Coral Springs received a National Merit University of Miami Scholarship. Jake Shipe, of Coral Springs, received a scholarship from the University of Central Florida. Boston University awarded a National Merit Scholarship to Jonathan Hutton of Parkland. This 2018 National Merit Scholarship program began in October 2016 when more than 1.6 million juniors from more than 22,000 high schools took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship

Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as the initial screen of program entrants. Last September, the highest-scoring students in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists. Only 16,000 students met the high academic standards and other requirements needed to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. The finalists were judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The Scholars were evaluated based on academic record, including difficulty of subjects studied and grades earned, scores from two standardized exams, and contributions and leadership in school and community activities. Students also had to submit an essay and be endorsed and recommended by a high school official. Since its founding in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has presented more than 338,000 scholarships worth over $1 billion.

ArtWalk at FAT Village in Fort Lauderdale is a Great Bohemian Night Out

N

BY TERRY JAILLET

estled against the railroad tracks in a rapidly revitalizing section of Fort Lauderdale is the FAT Village Arts District where a collection of old warehouses have been turned into art galleries, studios, tech-offices and even an old fashioned speak easy. FAT Village, which stands for Flagler Arts & Technology, seeks to create an environment that allows artists to create and exhibit work that is outside the realm of commercial galleries. Last Saturday of the Month FAT Village hosts ArtWalk on the last Saturday of every month from 6:00pm till 11:00pm. The cozy event features free parking, open galleries, a dozen or so eclectic food trucks, live music and even a cocktail or two. It is a great way to spend an hour or two. The Art Sometimes outdoor art exhibitions end up looking like trinket selling conferences. FAT Village’s ArtWalk is definitely not one

42 AUGUST 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

of those. Yes, you can probably find someone selling home-made soap or a dream catcher, but the focus is clearly on the galleries filled with modern art. On our visit we saw a 3-dimensional piece made from things the artist found in the ocean, several multimedia displays, along with a number of impressive oil and acrylic paintings. The Scene ArtWalk at FAT Village is easily the least pretentious art exhibition this writer has witnessed in quite some time. Folks from every walk of life seemed to be in attendance. Yes, there were hipsters present, but there were also grandmothers and teenagers with

dogs. There were young women in cocktail dresses rubbing shoulders with teens in flip flops and tank tops. On our visit, animal rights group Anonymous For The Voiceless conducted a silent protest performance art display. The members wore Guy Fawkes masks while holding televisions playing videos showing the conditions some that some livestock animals are forced to live in. The Vegan group was actively recruiting people and encouraging their audience to visit their website. ■ ArtWalk is held on the last Saturday of every month, at FAT Village in Fort Laudderale. ASK THE EXPERT

To “C” or Not to “C” – The Cesarean Section BY JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. regnant women typically have a vision of what type of birth they are planning and hoping for. However, one shouldn’t rule out the possibility of a Cesarean section. A Cesarean section, also better known as a C-section, is the delivery of a baby through a surgical incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. Although the C-section delivery rate has declined in recent years, the number of women delivering via C-section in the United States is still about 1 in 3. The main reason is when problems arise during labor. In certain circumstances, one may be scheduled in advance, but most of the time it’s done in response to an unforeseen complication. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, about 33 percent of American women who gave birth in 2011 had a cesarean delivery. The C-section rate in the United States has risen nearly 60 percent since 1996. In order to avoid the surgical procedure, or to make it as uncomplicated as possible the first thing to do is to pay attention to weight gain. Research has shown that women who were overweight when they got pregnant are twice as likely as their counterparts to need a C-section. It’s also been noted that obese women are more at risk to have surgical complications and a slower time healing. Other research has shown that overweight women labor longer which could also lead to a necessary C-section. Sometimes, it’s known that a pregnant woman will need a C-section even before she goes into labor. If this is the case, a planned C-section will be scheduled. Some of the reasons why one may be required are the following: ► The person is carrying more than one baby. ► More than one previous cesarean has been done. ► The person has had some kind of invasive uterine sugery previously. ► The baby is expected to be very large. ► The baby is in a breech (bottom first) or transverse (sidways) position. ► The placenta is so low in the uterus that it covers the cervix. ► There is an obstruction of some kind such as a large fibroid. Emergency C-sections are performed if problems arise making delivery dangerous to the mother or the baby. This may happen if any of the following occurs during labor: ► The cervix stops dilating, or the baby stops moving down the birth canal. ► The baby’s heart rate concerns your practitioner. ► The umbilical cord slips through the cervix which can cut off the baby’s oxygen supply. ► The placenta starts to separate from the uterine wall. ► There is an STD outbreak which may give the baby an infection. A good health provider will always be sure to guide their patient in the best delivery option for them regardless of the circumstance. It’s always important and encouraged for a patient to ask questions to feel comfortable about any procedure.

These guidelines are designed to assess how well the City’s budget serves as: ▸▸ A policy document ▸▸ A financial plan ▸▸ An operations guide ▸▸ A communications device Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award. There are over 1,600 participants in the Budget Awards Program. Finance Director Mary Beazley credited not only her staff, but also every City department for playing an important role in putting this document together. "This is an award for the entire City and it definitely showcases the great working relationships we have throughout the City,” she said. Congratulations! MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Coral Springs Update SKIP CAMPBELL, MAYOR hope everyone is having a great summer so far. It’s hard to believe school starts again in just a few weeks! Certainly with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas tragedy – and school shootings that have taken place throughout the country - safety is parents and educators number one concern. I want you to know for those of us who serve you from the City of Coral Springs, it is our number one priority. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, which was signed into law in March, requires the School Board to provide for School Resource Officers or armed guardians at every school. The City of Coral Springs currently provides a School Resource Officer at every School Board school. Our police department has been proactively working with the Broward County School Board to increase the number of School Resource Officers assigned to our public high schools. Imagine and Renaissance Charter Schools - independently operated public schools funded by the state – are in discussions with the City to provide police officers on campus during the school year. We can all agree this new law and its provisions are a step in the right direction to better protect what is most important to all of us – our children. Speaking of our schools, I want to congratulate all of our ‘A’ rated schools Country Hills, Eagle Ridge, Imagine Schools at Broward and Marjory Stoneman Douglas all maintained their ‘A” ratings. I could not be more proud of the fact that the Coral Springs Charter School received an ‘A’ rating for the 15th consecutive year. I look forward to seeing more ‘A’ ratings in the City as our educators and parents work together to ensure the highest quality education for students. The City is excited to announce that in addition to our annual 9/11 5K Remembrance Run on September 8th, this year we will welcome the 9 /11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit. Launched in 2013 by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the exhibit, which is housed in a 1,000 square foot trailer, is a tribute and educational tool that travels across the country. The exhibit will be located in the parking area between the Public Safety Building and Coral Springs Gymnasium (located at 2601 Coral Springs Drive). Pre-scheduled students from Coral Springs schools will have an opportunity to visit the exhibit each morning, with public viewing on September 11th from 2-8 p.m. and on September 12th from 4-8 p.m. I encourage residents to stay informed about both events by visiting coralspring.org/events. Interested in taking a one-night trip to Italy? If so, join us for the City’s annual International Dinner Dance - Bella Notte in Italia – That’s Amore - on Saturday, September 15 at 7 p.m. at the Coral Springs Marriott at Heron Bay. Guests are encouraged to wear multicultural dress to the event, which will include Italian cuisine, dancing and live entertainment for all to enjoy. Tickets are $60 and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, call 954-344-1005.

There can be so much to cover in that one visit, that there is not always enough room for parents to ask all of their questions about their child's growth. Most parents are familiar with growth charts and percentiles, but it can be hard to identify the normal percentile for their child. There are many factors that contribute to growth. One of the most important aspects to consider is parental heights. Mom and dad’s height plays a large role in how tall their child will be. Other factors, like nutrition and timing of puberty, contribute as medical problem that is increasing in prevalence, as well. This reduction in activity level is contributing significantly to the obesity epidemic. It is important to remember that no two children are alike. The best way to tell how to improve your child's nutrition is to meet with your pediatrician, a specialist who cares for children with obesity like a pediatric endocrinologist, or with a nutritionist. Screening for any underlying medical condition as the cause of weight gain is very important and a doctor can assess all possibilities. In general, your child's growth in both height and weight should be evaluated on an ongoing basis. Look out for signs of concern like rapid increases or decreases in height or weight percentiles, or height or weight measurements that are below or above the standard growth curves. When in doubt, discuss your concerns with your child's pediatrician. If needed, they can then refer you to a specialist for further evaluation. n To learn more about this topic and to find answers to your questions, Broward Health Coral Springs is hosting a free lecture with pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Lisa Kenigsberg on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 from 6-7pm at the hospital’s Medical Office Complex at 3100 Coral Hills Drive. COMMUNITY NEWS

Local Teen to Rock The House at Sunrise Civic Center on September 29th BY TERRY JAILLET

L

ocal 18-year old, former musical theater actress, Hilleah Neve, will be performing her first solo concert at the Sunrise Civic Center on September 29th. Here concert will feature covers of many of her favorite rock, jazz and pop tracks with 10% of the proceeds going to SHINE MSD, which supports Parkland shooting survivors through the arts. Hilleah’s journey to this point is a bit unusual. At the age of 13, she was living a charmed life. Hilleah had already transitioned from Community Theater to performing professionally, was attending a prestigious private school in Plantation, and frequently jet-setted on international vacations. Suddenly, everything changed. Following the sudden death of her father, Hilleah’s charmed life came to a crashing end. In addition to the loss of her father’s love and support, Hilleah’s family faced a financial crisis. Gone were the trips to the Bahamas and the fancy private school. To cope, she turned to music.

“I really discovered who I am as a person after my father died. I found myself listening to rocker bands like Lincoln Park, Radio Head and Imagine Dragons. That is who I truly am.” Hilleah recalls, “While I love the theater, it isn’t really who I am. I feel like you must be a completely different person in musical theater.” After performing in the stage show American Idiot, Hilleah decided she wanted to pursue a Rock N Roll career. She began performing at local bars and restaurants every chance she could. Using her contacts from the theater, she put together her own band, found a venue, hired a technical crew and is now promoting her own concert. Pretty impressive for an 18-year old recent high school grad. Hilleah will be joined on stage by “Gypsy Soul” music director and pianist, Kristen Long along with Danny Butler, Dean Robaina, Vincent Jahn and Will Fink. For tickets or more information visit www.hilleahneve.com.

Margate Increases Chlorination in City Water The measure was taken to prevent bacterial growth in city water mains. The city will also flush the water system by opening fire hydrants during the period. This process may cause cloudy or discolored water. The discoloration will be temporary and should clear within a few hours after flushing.

Special Needs & Aquarium Owners Aquarium owners and people with specific water needs are encouraged to contact relevant experts. The increase in chlorination may adversely impact fish and shellfish. The city claims these impacts will be resolved after it reverts to normal disinfection on Monday, August 20th.

T

BY TERRY JAILLET

he City of Margate increased the amount of chlorine in the public water supply on July 31st. Chlorine levels will be temporarily increased until August 20th, when they will be brought back down to normal levels. Consumers may

experience an unusual chlorine taste or odor in the tap water during this period, but these temporary conditions should not cause adverse health effects. However, kidney dialysis patients or people with medical issues should consult with their physicians for any special instructions.

CAN DO KID

For the Love of Literature – Local Scout Spreads His Wings to Achieve Eagle Ranking BY BEVERLY PERKINS

O

nce Upon A Time there was an ambitious boy scout named Benjamin Sachs who worked diligently with Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library and Friends of the Library to bring “Little Free Libraries” to Plantation parks. “Little Free Libraries” is not a regular library in a large structure with librarians, thousands of books and hours of operation. One doesn’t need a library card either. These “little” libraries are just that - little. They are colorful pieces of art that look similar to a birdhouse or a mailbox which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. They have become a gathering place where neighbors and community members can share their favorite literature and stories in a fun and unusual way. The notion, “Take A Book, Return A Book” couldn’t be simpler. It’s a borrowing system that the community gets to enjoy. Anyone can stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another to share. The Plantation Middle School graduate is following in his brother’s footsteps to achieve Eagle Scout status. The ranking is the prestigious and most sought after through The Boy Scouts of America. One must complete a minimum of 21 mandatory merit

badges to even be eligible, demonstrate leadership ability, and complete a service project. “I chose my project because I have always loved reading and being at Liberty Tree Park. My love of the feel of a book, having a physical copy that you can take anywhere, contributed to the conception of this project,” said Sachs. “I wanted to make books more accessible for people that can’t afford them, don’t have time to visit a public library, or don’t know how to read so that they can further their learning.” Sachs has been a scout since the first grade, and knew he wanted to place a library next to the playground at Liberty Tree Park where he has fond memories of growing up. He enlisted the help of the Helen B. Hoffman Library Director Monica Knapp, Phil Goodrich from Plantation Parks & Recreation, a few troop parents, and of course his supportive parents, Scott and Eileen. The project took 8 months to complete and a total of 300 hours. Although it’s complete, Sachs plans to continue collecting books and maintaining his endeavor. Look for Benjamin’s “Little Libraries” at Liberty Tree Park (7421 NW 5th Street) and Seminole Park (6600 SW 16th Street). Locals can also find one at the Jim Ward Community Center (301 NW 46th Avenue).

If you have gently-used paperbacks or hardcovers you’d like to contribute, please place them in any of the Little Free Library nearest you or bring them to The Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library, 501 N. Fig Tree Lane, Plantation.

Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie In September 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care com-munity in Davie for seniors aff ected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of demen-tia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot commu-nity. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create

an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. What is “The Artis Way? ” We follow what we call “The Artis Way.” Each letter of the word Artis stands for a tenet of the organization.

▸ “A” is the ability to have a voice. We want residents and their families to engage in open communication with our associates to make sure that what we’re doing is the right fit for them.

▸ “R” is about respecting and maintaining relationships. ▸ “T” stands for treasuring each person’s uniqueness. ▸ “I” is for integrity. We promote dignity and respect. ▸ “S” is for success and recognition.

How many people are aff ected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia? Every 67 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. By 2025, the number of people ages 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million. Dementia is becoming more and more of an epidemic. Therefore, the more quality care we can offer, the more fulfilling the lives of those with dementia can lead.

ASK THE EXPERT

Benefits of Running with Orthotics BY DR. JOHN GOODNER

W

hether you like to run 5K’s, 10K’s, Half or Full Marathons, having the proper running shoe is the single most important factor in injury prevention for runners of any level of competition or training. Running shoes must be selected based on the following: past experience with different shoe brands, biomechanical demands specific to the gait of the runner, and environment of the running surface on which the runner will race or train. In addition, current injuries and foot type (pronated, neutral, supinated) must be addressed to maximize running efficiency. If a runner is pronated, or flat footed, they are using more muscle energy to compensate and elevate the arch to a more ideal push off position. This leads to slower racing times, more overuse injuries, and degenerative joint changes to the lower extremity. A custom orthotic can maintain the fallen arch in a more energy efficient position allowing your muscles to work less, creating potentially faster racing times, and decreasing lower extremity injury. A supinated, or high arch, that is flexible can also cause pain and

62 AUGUST 2018 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

present with similar issues; this can be addressed with a custom orthotic as well.

Going for a run? Check out these injury prevention tips first: How often should I replace my running shoes? It is commonly recommended to replace running shoes every 300-500 miles. This can be difficult to keep track of, so the competitive runner should keep a running calendar to calculate when they will need replacement shoes based on their daily mileage and training schedule. For the more casual runner that does not track their mileage, it takes approximately 66 hours to run 500 miles at an eight-minute per mile pace. When is the best time to try on new shoes and how do I know they fit? Always try a new pair of shoes in late afternoon, this is when your feet are the largest due to swelling from standing and activity throughout the day. Always wear a cushioned sock when trying on a new shoe. You should be able to fit your thumb’s width in between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. How many pairs of shoes should I be using at one time? For the competitive runner, two to three pairs of shoes should be used. It is best to alternate running in one pair one day then using the second pair the

second day to allow full recoil of the shoe cushioning and maximize the life of your shoes as well as decrease your chance of injury. What shoes should I wear when I’m not running or training? Never walk in flat flexible shoes, flat sandals, or barefoot; even around your house. Competitive runners use recovery sandals with arch support and a heel that is higher than the toes. Purchase a good pair of supportive house sandals to prevent stress or overuse injury secondary to lack of arch support. n Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Associate of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a foot and ankle surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults.
