Happy New Year!
N
ew Year’s Day marks the beginning of a new year. It also serves as a point in time for many of us to start a change in our lives, like losing weight, eating healthier or reconnecting with long-lost friends. Whether you choose to call it a resolution or simply a goal to be a better you, the first step to making it happen is to write down what you want to accomplish and the steps it will take to get there. By setting a goal and keeping to your plan, you can make your goal or resolution a reality. Personally, our goal for 2019 is to spend more time with our children. With our oldest son now a high school senior, our nest will soon start to empty. We want to cherish this family time as much as we can while the kids are still home. Professionally, our goal is to continue to provide you with the best local news coverage available. Our City Media is proud to be South Florida’s leader in community news. Our team of experienced journalists are committed to bringing you the latest news on what’s happening in your community and your local schools. Be sure to check out our website www.ourcitymedia.com. Visit now and often to find a digital version with the same types of content found in our print magazines in multi-media format! While you are on the site, check out some of our other magazines. Our City Media has seven magazines serving Broward County, from the beach to the Everglades and everywhere in between, as well as Aventura. We truly hope you enjoy reading this magazine as much as we enjoy printing it. If you have any suggestions to make it even better, feel free to drop us a line at publisher@ourcitymedia.com. Pembroke Pines Elementary Students Receive Free Books BY DEBBY TEICH
M
embers of the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines are helping students at Pembroke Pines Elementary School create a home library. Eight years ago, the club initiated the program by providing all of the students in one elementary school with a new book for the holidays. Two years later they added a second school. It is the first year they will be donating books to all of the students at Pembroke Pines Elementary. “Rotary International is a strong supporter of literacy programs, so the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines chooses to give children books as our way of supporting literacy,” said Gail Quigley, retired middle school principal, who helped initiate the project and has been a member of the Rotary for over 20 years. “We believe that when children learn to love reading, it is reflected in all aspects of their academic achievement. We believe that when children get to select a book to keep, it fosters reading for enjoyment, which is different than assigned reading from the teacher.” All of the students visited the media center to select
a book. There was excitement in the room as they chose from a variety of genres, including mystery, fantasy, historical fiction, informational text, realistic fiction, science fiction and more. Members of the Rotary Club, classroom teachers, and other school administrators were there to help them. “The book giveaway is important as it puts a book
into the hands of each student and affords them the opportunity to partake in the joy of reading,” said Natasha Bell, principal. “It is my hope that with this book giveaway students will be able to connect with a book that they enjoy reading, and that will then foster a deeper love of reading in them.” The Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines also donated books to Sunshine Elementary in Miramar. This is the second year that every student at the school got to select a new book of their choice. Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines meets every Thursday, 12:15pm, at Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racket Club in Pembroke Pines. For information, visit www.rotaryclubofmiramarpines.com.

Community Risk Reduction Team Participates in KAPOW at FSU Charter Elementary BY DEBBY TEICH
T
hroughout the school year, the Community Risk Reduction team from the Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department has been working with students at FSU Charter Elementary. Once a month, Rick Scopa and Martha Leiva visit with students in Lauren Hindmarsh’s fifth grade class to teach them about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. It is all part of KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work). KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships that introduce students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. “The KAPOW program is really amazing and the volunteers are incredible,” said Hindmarsh. “The students discover how everything they are learning in school helps them prepare for their futures in the workplace and life. The kids love when the volunteers come. They really look forward to it.” During the lessons, the volunteers use hands-on

fun activities to involve the children and keep them interested. They have discussed stereotypes and the importance of treating all people equally. They showed the students a Halligan bar, an important tool used by the fire department for prying doors and windows open. They played the game “telephone” to reinforce the importance of communicating clearly with the people they work with, as well as those they are helping. And much more. “We inspire the kids to be successful in school and in their future careers,” said Scopa. “We draw from our experience in the fire service to set an example of how those topics are used in our careers. We believe that the students enjoy our visits as much as
we enjoy taking time to teach them and letting them get an idea of what a future career in the fire service would be like.” For the last lesson, the students will attend the fire training facility to get a better understanding of where Scopa and Leiva work, as well as their daily responsibilities. KAPOW is always looking for businesses or individual volunteers interested in participating in the program. It is an opportunity to change a young person’s life forever in only seven hours. Panther Run Elementary Raises Money for Make-A-Wish BY DEBBY TEICH
A
t Panther Run Elementary, students are learning the importance of giving back at an early age. They have formed a PIFP-Pay It Forward Panthers team that will participate in the 10th Annual Walk For Wishes, held on February 2. They are hoping to raise at least $5,000 to help grant the wishes of a Broward County child that is critically ill. It is a clear example of kids helping kids. “We are excited to walk and fundraise for this year’s Walk For Wishes,” said Elaine L. Saef, Principal. “A wish gives children renewed energy and strength, brings families closer together and unites communities. These life-changing wishes are only possible because of supporters like us. A wish experience can truly change a child’s life, and so can we. Join our team or make a donation today!” Since 1983, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida has granted more than 11,000 life-changing wishes for children who have critical illnesses. It aims to grant a wish for every medically-eligible child in its territory. Wish kids most often ‘wish to be’ (something), ‘wish to meet’ (someone), ‘wish to go’ (somewhere), ‘wish to have’ (something), or ‘wish to give’ (to a cause) and the nonprofit organization makes this happen for the

Bunnies Pawsitively Encourage Reading at Silver Palms Elementary BY DEBBY TEICH
S
everal times a week, Donna Florio visits Silver Palms Elementary School with her bunnies. It is all part of the Pawsitive Reading Program, implemented at the school this year to help students improve their reading skills. The program is run through a local pet therapy organization called Share-A-Pet. Sachin Mayi founded the organization in 2003 as a way for him and his yellow lab, Tenzin, to share their love with those in need. Everywhere they went, they found that there was a great need for pet-assisted ther-
apy. The organization currently has over 1,000 volunteers, pet assisted therapy teams and leaders across the nation who visit children’s centers, nursing homes, hospitals, cancer centers, and schools. Since 2005, Florio and her bunnies – BooBoo, a 12-year-old New Zealand rabbit, and Tucksy and Coca, six-monthold Rex rabbits - have been visiting several nursing/rehab facilities as part of the Share-APet program. “Many patients had rabbits when they were young and instantly related to mine,” said Florio. “Most patients are lonely and my visits always brought a smile to their faces, which made me feel good.” This year, she and her bunnies began participating in the Pawsitive Reading Program at Silver Palms. She meets with each of the five kindergarten classes weekly. She gathers with small groups of students that take turns reading to the bunnies from a selection of books chosen by the teacher. After they finish, they get to

spend quality time petting the bunnies. “All the children seem to enjoy our visits and reading with the bunnies,” said Florio. “Some of children have already improved their reading skills. Children in other grades see us around the school and get excited.” Shannon Arias, assistant principal, says that the program is important because it builds reading confidence and a love of reading in children. “Children naturally love animals and are intrigued by them,” said Arias. “Kindergarten children are commonly reluctant to read, but they are eager to read to the rabbits/pets. This program helps develop reading confidence and fosters a love of reading in our little ones. The kids love it! They are all excited and eager to read with the bunnies and spend time with them.”

If you are on anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners, your physician may temporarily discontinue the use of these until your treatment has taken place. Are there risks associated with this treatment? PRP uses your body’s own natural properties to treat your injury. Side effects utilizing PRP systems are very uncommon. Pembroke Pines Update BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS t’s a new year and a great time to try new things and expand our horizons. It’s also a bit cooler around this time of year in South Florida, which gives us all a chance to be outdoors more. If you have a garden, I encourage you to enter the 2019 Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest. If you don’t have a yard, you can nominate a friend’s yard. The deadline to enter is April 11. This year there will be a total of seven winners - one residential property from each district, one overall residential winner, one institutional winner, and one commercial property winner for the City as a whole. Yards will be judged by the Environmental Advisory Board on five components including Butterfly (the preservation of all stages of a butterfly’s life), Design and Function, Maintenance, Florida Friendly Value and Use of Hardscapes. Details of each component and applications are available at the Planning and Economic Development Department in City Hall, or by downloading the application from the City’s website by visiting www. ppines.com search keyword ‘Natalie Belmonte.’ The Award was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident, business woman and nature-lover, who tragically lost her life in July of 2011. With an increase in participation in the last few years, the contest has even been extended to educational institutions and commercial properties. For more information, please call 954-392-2100 or email kjensen@ppines.com. While the outdoors are calling you, if you haven’t signed up yet, now is a great time to register for the 2nd Annual Pines Light Up the Night 5K Run 2019 “Peace, Love & Sole.” It will be held on Saturday, February 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the Charles F. I encourage everyone to register, come out and have a great time. The event is sponsored by Calvin, Giordano & Associates, Inc. and the proceeds from the 5K run will benefit the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools. Potential Complication of Textured Breast Implants BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ccording to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery performed, with over 300,000 procedures performed in 2017. The safety and documented positive impact of breast enhancement on an individual’s self esteem has been well documented. However, there has been increasing awareness of a potential long-term complication of breast augmentation with textured breast implants – Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). There are several important facts that all patients should know regarding this disease process. Breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma is a rare and treatable type of T-cell lymphoma that can develop around breast implants. It is not a cancer of the breast tissue itself. The latency of development between implant insertion and diagnosis of BIA-ALCL has been from two to twenty-eight years with a median of eight years. No cases have been definitively identified associated with patients who have had smooth implants. The disease is associated with the increased surface area of textured implants in both saline and silicone implants. The majority of patients present with fluid around the implant as a delayed seroma. The diagnosis is confirmed by aspirating the fluid around the implant under ultrasound guidance and checking the cytology of the fluid. The majority of patients are cured of their disease by bilateral total capsulectomy (removal of the capsule around the implant) and implant removal. Rare patients will present with a mass and have increased risk of requiring radiotherapy and chemotherapy. What causes ALCL? The present theory is that implant texturing, bacteriologic contamination and genetic factors have been implicated and are undergoing further study. Women should not have their implants removed if they are asymptomatic. If a woman experiences a change in her breasts, especially a swelling or lump, she should undergo examination and appropriated imaging including an ultrasound and fine needle aspiration of any fluid around the implant. The current lifetime risk of BIA-ALCL is estimated to be 1:3817 to 1:30,000 women with textured implants. Since the initial case reported in 1996, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recognizes 255 cases in the U.S. and a total of 615 women worldwide as of November 2018. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

Do I Need a Trust? BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.
S
hould I consider creating a trust even though I don’t have a multi-million-dollar estate? Gone are the days that revocable living trusts were only for wealthy individuals. Why? Because it’s now less about avoiding estate taxes and more about the cost savings and protections that trusts can provide. And a properly drafted and funded trust avoids the expense, delay and loss of privacy of probate. The following scenarios help my clients understand why a revocable living trust may be their best option. Meet our hypothetical family, George and Jenny, happily married for 25 years with three children - Jessica, 20; Josh, 15; and Jonathan, 12. Both George and Jenny have created wills, leaving everything to each other. After they are both gone, their wills leave it all to their children in equal shares. Sounds like a logical plan? Maybe not. Tragically, George dies suddenly and, according to his will, all of his property transfers to Jenny. The following year, while rushing to an appointment on a rainy morning, Jenny loses control of her car and rear ends a bus full of trial attorneys heading to the annual Ft. Lauderdale “I’ll See You in Court Convention.” Several of the attorneys are injured and, predictably, lawsuits follow. Now what happens to Jenny’s inheritance from George? It’s likely all gone to creditors. What is left to raise her children? Perhaps nothing. If George and Jenny had used a trust in their estate plan, the final outcome may have been different. While Jenny’s property would still be subject to creditor claims, her inheritance from George inside a trust would be safe for her and their children.

In another sad scenario, imagine that Jenny dies first. George later remarries Susan, a woman with four adult children. What happens when George passes? His property, including what he inherited from Jenny, may go to Susan and eventually to Susan’s children. George and Jenny’s children could be completely disinherited! With a properly drawn trust, George and Jenny can rest assured that even if the surviving spouse remarries, their money will go to their children. Finally, think of George and Jenny happily enjoying retirement and grandchildren, but unfortunately, they are not fond of Jessica’s husband, Robert. Jenny fears that their son-in-law will never earn a decent living, and be dependent on their daughter Jessica to support him for the rest of his life. George worries that if they leave an inheritance to Jessica and she ultimately divorces Robert, a substantial portion of Jessica’s inheritance could be lost to her “no good husband.” If George and Jenny leave the inheritances to their children in a trust, these assets will not be commingled with marital property. Therefore, in the event of a divorce, daughter Jessica’s inheritance will not be the subject of division and partial distribution to Robert. Speak with a qualified estate planning attorney to see if a trust is right for your family situation. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? LEGALLY SPEAKING
The Possibility of Private School BY EVAN BARON his time of year, parents are often planning for school for next year. If the child is in public school and he/she is remaining in the same school, there usually are no issues to be discussed. If, however, one or both of the parents are considering private school, certain issues may arise. What school will we enroll the child in? Who will pay for the expense? Is private school even to be considered? If so, will it be religious based? These are some of the questions which often need to be addressed. If the parties have already entered into a Marital Settlement Agreement and Parenting Plan, and there is a provision which states that the minor child(ren) will attend private school, then the parties were wise enough to plan ahead and resolve the issue before it became a topic of litigation. Of course, there still maybe the question of which school will they attend? Often times it depends on cost, distance from home and, obviously, the school’s reputation. It would seem that parents, even divorced parents, could decide what is best for their children. Of course, this is not always true. If private school was not originally agreed to, then an Agreement must be worked out between the parties. Private school is not a right, but rather it is a privilege. There are public schools which will provide an education free of charge. In most instances, a parent cannot be forced to pay for private school. If, however, certain conditions exist, the Courts could rule otherwise. For example, if a child has been attending private school for many years, then a judge may not want to disturb the child’s education. Of course, this is very much contingent upon the affordability of private school as well as the parent’s ability to contribute. If one of the parents does not have the financial means to pay, then the other parent could certainly agree to pay 100% of the costs. This, however, will not be considered a substitute for a child support obligation. The other issue is whether there is the necessity for private school. Many children have special needs due to learning disabilities or perhaps ADHD. The public schools often do not have the resources to provide for these children. Private school maybe the only answer to insure that they receive the care and education they require. What if one of the parents refuses to enroll the child in a private school and the other parent cannot afford it? Will the courts put the child’s needs first? The law says that in certain cases a judge can order a parent to pay for private school, even if he/she objects. This will only occur if it can be proven that the public school system cannot accommodate the child and the refusing parent has the financial means to contribute. If it is too great a hardship the court’s hands maybe tied. Based upon Florida’s “Shared Responsibility” laws, decisions about school should be a joint decision. Neither parent should take it upon himself/herself to decide without discussion. As in most instances, a few minutes of constructive dialogue can save hours of litigation.

This is our Blood Hound Chewbacca, “Chewy” for short. Almost a year old he weighs in at 108 pounds! He loves his cookies and comes immediately just at their mention. He loves kids and cant seem to get enough of them. Although he’s big he’s not very brave, a true gentle giant. He loves to play in the sprinkler, and visit anyone willing to pet him. His favorite toy is his chew rope. Very curious he’s known to bring in lizards, frogs, and even a millipede. Chewy loves everyone!
