This Valentine’s Day, Show Someone You Love Them
E
ach year, on February 14th, millions of people around the world demonstrate their love for someone special by giving Valentine’s Day gifts. While chocolate, flowers or jewelry remain the most popular presents, there are many more interesting options available. People who appreciate sentiment more than financial value may give a hand-written coupon book to their love, complete with “free massage” or “I do the dishes” coupons, to be redeemed by their mate at a future date. Others may give a gift in support of their partner’s passion -- a new 3-wood for a golfer or a set of paint brushes for an artist. Other options include heart-shaped pizzas or twohanded mittens, meant for lovers to keep warm while holding hands (probably not the most practical present here in South Florida). Personally, we prefer the simple Sweetheart candies with “be mine” stamped on the side. No matter what you give, if you give from your heart, your Valentine is sure to be happy. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

Pembroke Pines Residents Enjoy the Annual Holiday Tea BY DEBBY TEICH
P
embroke Pines men and women welcomed the holiday season at the Holiday Tea, which is an annual tradition at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. They sipped tea from vintage holiday tea cups, enjoyed delicious holiday finger food and even posed for photos with Santa. Before the event ended, guests were served a glass of cranberry and champagne to make a holiday toast. They wished one another holiday joy and blessings for the New Year. “The Holidays are better when you make time for yourself and your friends,” said Nancy Figley, who attended the event. Held four times a year at the City of Pembroke Pines SWFP Community Center, the afternoon seasonal teas are a great break from the work week and mobile phones. The next one is the Annual Spring Tea, which will be held on March 22. Dress for the occasion in spring colors and top it off with a spring hat or bonnet. Guests will vote for the best spring outfit. Seating is limited and payment is due prior to March 8. “This uninterrupted tea time gives people a chance to breathe, friends catch up, reminisce about holidays past holidays and experience a proper tea,” said Suzie Felix, Activities Coordinator for the Pembroke Pines SWFP Community Center. “The teas have become so popular, people reserve seats and in some cases tables for the upcoming tea as they are leaving.” Reservations for groups of four or more are recommended due to limited seat-

Sundaes with Santa Is a Success COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
S
undaes with Santa has been a family tradition for many Pembroke Pines families. Over 200 children and adults had a great time at the sold out event at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center.
Children enjoyed playing reindeer games, meeting Santa, winning prizes and watching their parents toss a Santa, snowmen, and reindeer to win prizes. They created special sundaes using the 24 toppings offered, which included mini M&M’s, Teddy Grahams, ginger bread men cookies, marshmallows, Gummy Bears and more. They also enjoyed a magical moment when they were asked to imagine it was snowing in Pembroke Pines and their wish came true. Families took time to wonder through the Community Center to admire the holiday decorations and displays, and to watch a train chug through a mountain village covered in snow. They also admired the 34 Christmas trees decorated in themes ranging from Animals to America. “Families enjoyed a magical afternoon, taking selfies in front of their favorite trees and holiday displays, while creating a beautiful holiday memory for their children,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. Participate in the City of Pembroke Pines Kindness Event COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
A
n act of kindness is any act that requires you to put someone else’s needs before your own. City of Kindness is a coalition of organizations working to make the world a better place by increasing the amount of kindness in it. It is not a literal place, but it is what we are all creating by practicing kindness daily. On February 11, the City of Pembroke Pines and the School Board of Broward County invite families and friends to join the effort by participating in a City of Kindness event: Kindness/Forgiveness/ Compassion. It will be held from 11am to 2pm, at the William B. Armstrong Dream Park, 1700 NW 160 Avenue (Dykes Road). “We are a city of great diversity,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “Just taking an extra moment to say hello may ultimately begin a friendship with someone from a distant continent. If we invest in one another and encourage all people to make a commitment to perform random acts of kindness, our community will develop a culture of kindness.” Residents are invited to the Community Peace Meal Picnic. They are encouraged to bring a bag lunch, decorative picnic blankets and baskets. There will be musical entertainment, a presentation of a Peace Pole and the creation of a Human Peace Sign. Residents and friends are asked to tag their kind deeds with #PinesisKind.
“Being kind is a free gift we can give one another,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis of Pembroke Pines. “In actuality, we simply are asking people to be polite, hold the door open for someone, let people exit the elevator before you board, smile and say hello to people you don’t know, and so on. Mayors around the country are taking this initiative very seriously in the hopes of reintroducing Good Old American friendliness and kindness - one person at a time.” Mayors are challenging the nation to adopt a culture of kindness in our cities, businesses and schools through acts of kindness. City of Kindness has committed to tracking these acts across the nation with the official Kindness Counter. Submit a completed act of kindness, regardless of the size or impact, and join City of Kindness in this movement. Once you’ve completed an act, search the website for more resources and opportunities to get involved. Kindness is everywhere and it only takes one act to make a difference in your community. To pledge your kindness promise and learn about the kind movement, visit www.cityofkindness.org. To participate in a Kindness Day performance, contact Kimberly Young at Kimberly.Young@ browardschools.com or call 754-321-1644. For information about the Pembroke Pines event, call 954-392-2116 or visit www.ppines. com/special events.

PPCHS Seniors to Battle SWFPCC Seniors in Intergenerational Spelling Bee SCHOOL NEWS

Last year’s winners were: ▸▸ 1st Place – Hayley Hartwell (student) ▸▸ 2nd Place – Dixie Silcox (senior) ▸▸ 3rd Place – Edward Riccardi (senior) “If the 2nd Annual Senior vs. Senior Spelling Bee is anything like last year, the contestants will be spelling words unfamiliar to them,” said Shechter. “This is a perfect example of why the Spelling Bee is a great challenge and highlights how vocabulary has evolved through the generations. It was a very challenging contest!”
O
n February 7, Pembroke Pines residents will once again prove which generation has the best spellers. Seniors from Pembroke Pines Charter High School will battle local senior citizens (60 and older) during the 2nd Annual Seniors vs. Seniors Spelling Bee. The event, which is presented by the City of Pembroke Pines Community Services, will be held from 12:30pm – 2pm, in the main hall of the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Senior Center Campus, located at 301 NW 103 Ave. Registration is required. Jay Schechter, Pembroke Pines Director of Community Services, and Peter Bayer, principal of Pembroke Pines Charter High School, came up with the idea for the intergenerational contest last year. “Our first one was such a huge success, so we just had to keep it going,” said Schechter. “Bringing these two groups together allows them to learn about each other through a fun and friendly competition.” Students from the Pembroke Pines Charter High School Student Government Association will be on one side of the stage with the Center’s seniors on the other side. Last year’s competition was close, but the teenagers took first place with the word “impertinence.” Both groups have been preparing for this year’s event and vow to be the champions.

Heart Smart Lifestyle Changes: Reduce Heart Disease Risks As the number one killer in the United States, heart disease continues to pose a significant risk for all Americans. But, what if you discovered that initiating simple David Lopez, MD lifestyle changes could make a world of difference in preventing the disease? Well, it’s a fact. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), making healthier lifestyle choices can substantially reduce your risk of heart disease. “Small lifestyle changes may have big impact on reducing the risk of heart disease, and aid in prevention overall,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist David Lopez, MD. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Anyone can make healthy lifestyle changes. Simply making smarter choices in diet and exercise is a great start. For example, in general, everyone should get 30 minutes of moderate activity each day. Dr. Lopez shares that being sedentary, or not moving, increases the risk for many chronic health illnesses, including heart disease.
Since regular, moderate physical activity promotes a healthy vascular system, remaining active can be considered a huge step in the right direction towards prevention. “The key is to start slowly and to build up endurance, increasing to 30 minutes of exercise three to five times weekly,” recommends Dr. Lopez. Overall, healthy lifestyle changes that have a positive impact on reducing the risk of heart disease include:
What can you do to improve your heart health? Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to your doctor about the ones that apply to you. Dr. Lopez adds, “It’s never too late to evaluate your lifestyle choices, and make positive changes. Every healthy change you make can increase your quality of life, and help you live longer.”

embers of the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines are helping students at Annabel C. Perry Elementary School create a home library. For the sixth year, they provided all of the students with a book as a holiday gift. By the time they graduate, they may have received as many as nine books from the Rotary. “Many of the students have never owned a book before,” said Gail Quigley, retired middle school principal, who helped initiate the project and has been a member of the Rotary for 19 years. “If they don’t see reading at home, how are
they ever going to develop reading as something one does for pleasure? Reading at home is very different from reading at school. We need to have kids experience this difference for themselves.” All of the students visited the resource room to select a book of their choice. There was excitement in the room as they chose from a variety of genres, including mystery, fantasy, historical fiction, informational text, realistic fiction, science fiction and more. Members of the Rotary Club, Miramar City Commissioner Yvette Colburn, Acting Principal Sheneka Blue, classroom teachers, and other school administrators were there to help them. “The Book Giveaway is a phenomenal experience that is valued by faculty, students, and parents,” said Acting Principal Sheneka Blue. “More importantly, it is an opportunity to put books in children’s hands. This is only the beginning of how this event impacts student progress. Each student will have their own learning experience, as they read their individual books. Students will increase their vocabulary, deepen their comprehension and expand their imaginations, all through reading books. The Rotary Club is a valued partner of Annabel C. Perry Pre K-8 and the book giveaway is only one example of the many ways the Rotary Club supports our school community. We invite all community members to partner with us as we cultivate tomorrow’s leaders.” Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines meets every Thursday, 12:15pm, at Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racket Club in Pembroke Pines. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 2/28/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 20 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Adriana and Kelli – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Pines Family Chiropractic and it’s at 9841 Pines Blvd. Our phone number is 954-435-4380. Call Adriana or Kelli for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.PinesFamily.com. Do you have a thoughtful and comprehensive estate plan which includes:
Estate Planning is a Team Sport BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
O
ften when I meet with new clients, I discover that they may like to do things by themselves. By investing online at E-Trade, or using Turbo Tax in lieu of a CPA for their returns, they are saving time and not “wasting” money. Purchase insurance or an IRA without an agent? Easy to do. And through the extensive marketing of sites such as Legal Zoom, you can now download a will, trust, and advance legal directives. Why hire someone when you can do it by yourself, for less? As inexpensive and efficient as these sources can be, they all lack a very important element: counseling. Estate planning and decisions regarding taxes, investments, insurance, and disability are daunting and complex. Knowing what you don’t know is critical. One way to keep you on track as your world changes is to build a “team” of professionals who can offer real financial and legal counseling. Who are the members of your team and how do you choose them? Your team members may be a CPA, financial planner, attorney, banker, stockbroker, and perhaps an insurance advisor. The first step in selecting a professional might be a recommendation by a friend, colleague or an existing member of your team. It is also important, no matter who may refer you, to do your own independent research. Schedule a consultation. Ask questions. Check qualifications. There is never a substitute for experience and competence, but also consider if this is someone you feel comfortable with. Your goal is a long-term relationship. When it comes to estate planning, a qualified estate planning attorney offers more than simply producing documents for your signature. Their value is in the counsel provided. While you may save money in the short term using an online service, or even an attorney who just dabbles in estate planning, your heirs may be left to clean up any mistakes that may have been made. Are there any other factors you should consider? One issue currently getting a lot of attention is the term “financial advisor,” commonly used by stockbrokers, insurance agents, or someone who sells mutual funds or annuities. Actually, anyone can add that title to their name, and it certainly does not make them an expert. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) however, is a positive indicator that you will be provided with objective financial guidance. But even those with the CFP designation may not be a good fit for you. Do your research. A basic rule of estate planning is thinking about how your loved ones will handle their financial affairs after you are gone. Consider leaving behind a team to provide consistent, reliable and supportive counsel and advice to you now, and then to assist and guide your loved ones later. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the area of estate planning and probate and trust administration for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a complimentary estate-planning consultation with Mr. Iden, please contact Iden Law Offices at (954)885-0085.

Am I Getting a Fair Deal? BY MAYLEIDYS PORRASPITA, ESQUIRE
Y
ou are injured at work, some benefits are denied, and you seek to compel the Employer and the Insurance Company, often called the Carrier, by filing a Petition for Benefits. The Petition for Benefits starts the claim and will list what it is that you are seeking. After filing your Petition you wait, confident that you will either receive the benefits to which you are entitled or you will get your day in court before a Judge of Compensation Claims. However, you are soon faced with the realization that you are forced to attend a mandatory mediation. You are concerned. What can you expect? Are you better off settling? Will you be forced to make a decision? What is mediation? Mediation is a face-to-face negotiation between the Claimant, the Employer and the insurance company in an attempt to resolve any disputes in your claim. At the start of the mediation, both sides will have an opportunity to tell their side of the story. It is the Mediator’s job to tell each side the downfalls of their case and attempt to bring the parties to an agreement that they can both live with. Mediation is required in each and every case in an effort to allow the parties an opportunity to resolve the dispute without the necessity of involving the Court. Although attendance at Mediation is mandatory for all parties, reaching an agreement is not. During the mediation process, the merits of your case are discussed and at times the carrier may opt to offer you a lump sum settlement to resolve your case in the entirety. The Employer/Carrier’s attorney advises their client what is a reasonable amount to settle for based on what is called the exposure of your case. Exposure is the amount of money the insurance company can anticipate they will have to pay over the life of your claim. Often times, Claimants feel they are not getting a fair deal and decide to proceed before the Judge. However, it is important to note that a Judge of Compensation claim can only award benefits, whether monetary or medical, that are owed to you and are past due. The Judge has no authority to award future benefits and no authority to award you a lump sum settlement. Although there is no need to be represented by an attorney during mediation, presenting unrepresented leaves the Claimant at a serious disadvantage. A claimant unfamiliar with his/her rights and how to obtain those rights might fail to obtain the benefits owed or not received the monetary compensation warranted by their case. A knowledgeable Workers’ Compensation attorney can guide you through the mediation process. A claimant’s attorney familiar with Worker’s Compensation will be able to evaluate your case and tell you what is a reasonable settlement amount. He/she will inform you of the pros and cons of going before the Judge in your case or if settlement out of court is the right decision for you. Most importantly, the injured worker is not burdened with the cost of legal representation since the attorney representing the Claimant only gets paid when benefits are secured for the Claimant and these costs are usually the responsibility of the insurance carrier who has failed to timely and properly provide the benefits. The Law Offices of Mayleidys Porraspita, P.A. are located in Pembroke Pines. If you have any questions regarding the matter discussed in the article above or any other Worker’s Compensation question or concern, call the office at 800-492-5455. HABLAMOS ESPANOL.

The Difficult Problem of Relocation BY EVAN BARON
A
nyone involved in family law, whether it be an attorney, mediator or even a judge, will agree that relocation cases are often the most difficult and challenging. Let me first explain the concept of relocation. A relocation occurs when one parent is seeking permission to relocate with a minor child more than 50 miles from their home. This generally occurs post judgment, meaning after the parties have already been divorced; although it could be an element that is addressed during the dissolution itself. It is not the parent’s relocation that becomes an issue, but rather the minor child’s. Several years ago, the Florida Legislature passed a relocation statute, which dictates how these matters must proceed. A parent who was or is married to the other parent (paternity cases are not always the same) must receive either written permission from the other parent or a court order allowing the relocation to occur. Assuming there is no agreement between the parents, Florida Statutes require the “relocating parent” to file a Petition to Relocate. If a timesharing schedule has already been established by the court, a request to modify the time-sharing schedule must also be included. The Petition must be served upon the other parent, who will have twenty days to respond. The petition must include the following language: A response to the supplemental petition objecting to relocation must be made in writing, filed with the court, and served on the parent or other person seeking to relocate within 20 days after service of this supplemental petition to relocate. If you fail to timely object to the relocation the relocation will be allowed, unless it is not in the best interests of the child, without further notice and without a hearing. The Petition must include the following: ▸▸ A description of the location of the intended new residence, including the state, city and specific address if known ▸▸ The home telephone number of the intended new residence ▸▸ The date of the intended move ▸▸ A detailed statement of the specific reasons for the proposed relocation. If it is based upon a job offer which has been reduced to writing, it must be attached. ▸▸ A proposal for the modified time sharing schedule In deciding whether to grant the relocation, the Court must consider: ▸▸ The relationship between the minor child and the nonrelocating parent ▸▸ The age and developmental stage of the child and the likely impact a relocation will have on that child ▸▸ The feasibility of preserving the relationship between the child and the nonrelocating parent ▸▸ The child’s preference, taking into consideration the age and maturity of the child ▸▸ Whether the relocation will enhance the general quality of life for the child and the parent seeking relocation ▸▸ The reasons the nonrelocating parent is in fact objecting ▸▸ The current economic and employment circumstances of each parent ▸▸ Whether the relocation is being sought in good faith ▸▸ Any other factor affecting the best interests of the child As you can see, this is a complicated issue. It would be best for both parties to seek legal counsel before considering such a move. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

ipoabdominoplasty is an advanced technique bringing significant change to the traditional tummy tuck. The procedure involves a combination of traditional liposuction with an open skin and fat removal procedure, typically referred to as a tummy tuck. The combination of the two procedures enables the plastic surgeon to better contour and shape the abdomen and the adjacent areas more completely. Patients who have experienced increased skin laxity and excess fat deposition in the abdomen, hips, and waist can now transform their bodies into a more beautiful shape. This procedure is ideal for patients who have excess skin and fat with abdominal weakness, commonly seen after childbirth, weight loss, and with the alterations that are seen with the aging process. Lipoabdominoplasty safely Before After combines suction-assisted lipectomy (liposuction) with abdominal muscle tightening and skin removal. The fat which is removed via lipoaspiration can be added to other areas of contour deficiency like the buttocks through fat grafting or transfer. This combination reshapes the entire midsection and buttock giving the individual the Abdominoplasty shapely body contour they desire. The technique should be used with caution in patients who have a history of smoking or previous abdominal surgery and should be performed only by experienced surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. There are a number of important variables that determine whether a patient is a candidate for a lipoabdominoplasty. For any plastic surgical procedure to be a complete success, medical and psychological fitness for surgery is a prerequisite. The appropriate patient typically is close to their ideal body weight with anatomic features that may be improved surgically, including loose skin, excess fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. The distribution of fat is one determinant of the improvement a patient will have from a tummy tuck. Fat in the superficial tissue is the type that is possible to pinch. This superficial fat may be removed through excision (tummy tuck) or aspiration (liposuction). If skin laxity or looseness is significant, the skin and fat should be removed with a tummy tuck. If the skin elasticity is adequate; however, the superficial fat may be removed through liposuction alone. Liposuction may flatten the abdomen, but it will not tighten the skin significantly. Patients who have soft, distended abdomens frequently have lax muscles or a separation of rectus muscle in the midline known as diastasis. This is common after multiple pregnancies making it a great procedure for ‘Mommy Makeovers’ or significant weight loss patients. When patients have excess skin that extends to the lateral hips and lower back or buttocks, an extended or circumferential abdominoplasty may be necessary. For most patients, the resultant incision is well hidden within underwear and bathing suit lines. The procedure usually takes 2 – 3 hours. Patients should prepare to rest for a minimum of one to two weeks after their procedure. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Discovering the Best You Yet! Your 2017 Health and Wellness Goals BY DR. TAMY FAIERMAN
T
he first few months of a new year is a common time to reset your priorities and make goals for the coming year ahead. More often than not, these goals revolve around personal health and wellness. Often times, patients will discuss these goals with their doctors which can be very important and helpful for the physician. As a surgeon, I look forward to my patients sharing their goals. This can be especially helpful to cosmetic surgeons, because it tells the surgeon how the individual views their own beauty and health. Even very small goals can yield big results. Below are a few that I would like to share with patients.
Stand and move at least once an hour
Sitting all day is bad for your health and can lead to weight gain and extra fat (especially around the abdomen). Many people own Fitbits, an Apple watch and other health monitoring devices. Many of these devices have a built in reminder that taps and reminds you to stand up, stretch and move around at least once an hour. Find other ways to get more movement into your workday — get a headset and walk around when you’re on phone calls, go for a walk on your lunch break, or consider getting a sit/stand desk.
Take your own lunch and snack to work
Processed food is bad for your health, your skin, and your waistline and eating out can also leave a serious dent in your wallet. For a healthier year, make an effort to take your own lunch to work so you can take more control over your eating habits. Even if you don’t have time to prepare your own lunch, preparing a few healthy snacks like almonds, almond butter and a few apple slices or hummus with carrots and red pepper can add some nutrients and vitamins and will help sustain you so you don’t hit the vending machine during the day.
Drink water
Water helps you stay hydrated and energized and control your appetite. Drinking water is also essential to having healthy skin. Carry a 16 ounce water bottle with you to work each day and make an effort to empty and refill it at least two to three times during the workday.
Remove sugar from your diet

Too much sugar is bad for your waistline and it destroys collagen in your body and leaves you with older, weaker looking skin and more wrinkles. Limit yourself to one treat a day or just on the weekends and pay more attention to the sugar content in your daily foods.
Make skin care a priority
Taking good care of your skin is one of the best ways to ward off the signs of aging — wear sunscreen when you go outside, exfoliate twice a week, use moisturizer each day, drink a lot of water and wash your makeup off at night. It may also help to consider cosmetic treatments that can restore your skin and make you look younger. Dr. Tamy Faierman is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Her office is located at 17130 Royal Palm Boulevard, Suite 1, in the Windmill Professional Campus in Weston. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA
D
evelopmental Flatfoot is one of the most common conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it, and there IS cause for some concern. FLATFEET are a genetic problem. Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. Congenital bone abnormalities as well as trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch can cause flattening of the arch and foot. A common cause of developmental flatfoot is tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the severe foot deformity. SYMPTOMS include young children constantly preferring to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. Leg pain, especially at night and premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers. Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity is common. It is occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain. SIGNS include lowering or complete collapse of the arch. The front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. Knock-Knees is common which exasperates the deformity. The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination or when the patient is standing. The child can be overweight and lacks athletic ability; general inactivity or avoidance of activity in children is common. Abnormal shoe wear as well as a child or teenager that does not run correctly occurs due to the deformity. TREATMENT begins with a complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. Occasional immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles with a walking cast is necessary to decrease the deforming force of the calf muscle on the flatfoot. Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position may be recommended. In most cases, this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. The appropriate treatment plan can be a life-changing experience for the child. Prognosis is excellent, especially with timely management of the problem. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. BRIGHT STEPS FORWARD Founded in 2005 to help families in need, Bright Steps Forward, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission to ensure that ALL children in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties with neurological or developmental disorders have access to top quality special needs education and therapeutic interventions so they may achieve their maximum potential. Bright Steps Forward operates a fully accredited therapeutic learning center for children with special needs that serves children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Unlike public school classrooms, the class sizes in our learning centers are small and children are grouped according to their needs. Bright Steps Forward’s academic program follows the Sunshine State Standards and we include other programs to enrich the curriculum. What sets our therapeutic learning centers apart from other special needs programs is our ability to provide intensive ABA, PT, OT and speech therapies during or after the tutoring sessions so that each child can blossom socially, physically as well as cognitively.
