Happy Valentine’s Day!
M
any of us will be purchasing our chocolates and flowers for our sweethearts, or writing our dearest a love letter or two, on February 14th. Valentine’s Day has evolved from a somber Christian day of remembrance into a day for all of us to celebrate those we love most. Be sure to look for some great Valentine’s Day gift ideas and deals in this month’s Our City. Here are a few fun facts you may not have known about Valentine’s Day: ▸▸ About 1 in 30 pet owners purchase a Valentine’s Day present for their pet. ▸▸ Much like kids at school, in Victorian times Valentine’s Day cards were sent anonymously. ▸▸ Over 800 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year and almost all of those cards are purchased within a week of February 14th. ▸▸ In 1573, Britain’s King Henry VII declared February 14th Valentines Day (unfortunately his son wasn’t a very good Valentine). ▸▸ Americans buy more than 30 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate each year. ▸▸ Almost 200 million roses are expected to be purchased on Valentine’s Day this year. So, this February 14th, when you give your most cherished loved one that something special, you will know the rest of the story. Happy Valentine’s Day! Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Fox Vein and Laser Experts is a premier vein and laser center that focuses on the treatment of venous disease, including varicose veins, leg pain, swelling, venous insufficiency, lipodermatosclerosis and leg ulcers. Dr Fox and her team have won several awards - most recently Best of Weston. At Fox Vein Experts, they have developed their own techniques to improve the disappearance of varicose and spider veins.
Dr. Susan B. Fox and her team have successfully performed tens of thousands of vein procedures.
Dr. Fox is recognized as a vein and laser expert and has lectured nationally. She has been featured on several news programs for her expertise. They also have the newest and best lasers and skin procedures such as Vivace available for tattoo removal, spot removal, hair removal, acne scar removal and skin rejuvenation and tightening. Dr. Fox accepts most major insurances for any treatment that is medically necessary and has convenient payment options for cosmetic procedures Dr. Fox answered some commonly asked questions about her practice. Describe your practice. We are a premier vein and laser center conveniently located in Hollywood and Pembroke Pines. We perform minimally invasive, cutting edge vein procedures and offer a variety of nonablative laser techniques. We get rid of unwanted varicose and spider veins and help people’s legs with swelling, aching, heaviness. We have amazing healing times for venous stasis ulcers and can improve the way people’s legs look and feel with all degrees of vein disease. We offer procedures to help improve the discoloration associated with vein disease that other doctors
cannot address. We offer the Picoway laser, one of the best and fastest lasers available to remove tattoos and skin spots and discolorations. It also works well at smoothing wrinkles, erasing acne scars and other scars. In a matter of minutes, the Picoway can smooth wrinkles, build collage and remove discolorations and refine scars. Describe your (Dr. Fox) experience. I (Dr. Fox) t trained at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. I started the first Vascular Medicine Department and Vein Center at University Hospital’s Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. I have been featured as a vein and laser expert nationally and internationally, and have been on multiple news Before programs in America and Latin America. Fox Vein and Laser Experts has served as a training facility for multiple national corporations and won several awards as being a top vein and laser center. After Why should patients visit Fox Vein and Laser Experts vs. other practices? We are recognized experts in the field of vein disease and lasers. We have certified ultrasonographers that provide in depth vascular exams and offer excellent care and service to our patients. I was one of the first physicians to perform Endovenous Laser Ablations in Ohio and nationally. I was one of the first in Florida to perform Clarivein procedures and have been performing ultrasound guided sclerotherapy and foam for decades. We can treat all aspects of vein disease. Describe some of the procedures do you offer. We offer the newest and best minimally invasive vein procedures, including
Endvenous laser Ablation, Venaseal, Veingogh, Laser spider vein removal, Phlebectomies, Foam sclerotherapy and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy. Most of these procedures are performed in under 30 minutes with often no incisions necessary to remove those unsightly veins. We also offer hair removal, spot removal and spider vein removal with the Gentle Max Pro laser. This is one of the best and fastest lasers on the market to remove unwanted hair on any skin color. Do you offer tattoo removal? We also offer tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation with the Picoway Laser. This laser removes tattoos much faster than others on the market and uses vibrational energy to shatter the ink particles, so the ink goes away much faster than other nano lasers. Resolve by Picoway shrinks pores, tightens skin, erases acne scars and sun spots and discolorations while building collagen with little to no down time. It is literally a lunchtime make over. What else do you provide? We now have an aesthetician on staff and are one of the first facilities to offer Vivace microneedling and RF for skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, scar reduction, decrease in stretch marks and more. This can be done before an event to make your skin camera ready and give you that extra lift and glow. It can be combined with PRP. Come try it today and be one of the first to experience this amazing procedure and start looking younger! What is vein disease and how does it progress?Veins are blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart. When the valves in the veins are not working correctly, instead of all the blood going back to the heart, some drips slowly downward causing the blood to pool and the legs to feel heavy, achy and tired. The legs start to look more and more discolored and more veins appear and the ankles start to turn blue and brown. Over time, the ankles
Diagnosis and & Laser Procedures swell and the skin scars down and hardens. The veins bulge more and more, and more skin changes occur. Venous eczema develops and gradually people can get lipodermatosclerosis, atrophie blanche and ulcers. Bleeding veins are also a problem, and the bleeding is very difficult to control. What should people do about vein disease? Patients should call for a consultation and have an ultrasound to diagnose the source of their vein problems. Until the appointment, patients should elevate their legs, wear compression hose, and take anti-inflammatories for their pain.

Why do people remove tattoos? People are often very excited when they get a tattoo. However, over time, this happiness can fade. Having the reminder of an ex or something that one is no longer involved with is not appealing. Many times, people want to climb the corporate ladder and various companies have policies about covering or removing tattoos in visible areas. Some people want more space for more ink. Some tattoos are done wrong and people are not happy from the beginning. Whatever the reason for removal, Picoway laser is the best tattoo removal laser out there. It removes all colors of ink on any skin type faster and better. It removes the tattoos in fewer treatment sessions and with less pain
than other lasers. What else is Picoway used for besides tattoos?Resolve by Picoway is used to remove skin discolorations with aging. It helps build collagen, fade sun spots, refine pores, tighten skin and reduce wrinkles. It is also used to fade spots and help tighten and refine the décolleté and people’s hands. It is FDA approved for the removal of acne scars and can help fade and refine scars of all types especially after breast augmentation, C-sections and tummy tucks. Picoway is fast, effective and has really no down time. You look amazing almost immediately. What does the Gentle Max Pro Laser do? It can remove spider veins, sun spots or discolorations, and is amazing at removing unwanted hair. It has one of the largest spot sizes on the market and can remove hair super fast with little to no pain on every skin color. As well, it works great for laser facials and building collagen. What are your newest procedures? The newest procedure we have is Vivace that tightens the skin, builds collagen and elastin and helps with wrinkles, lax skin, stretch marks scars and more. There is no real down time. It doesn’t hurt and can be done in the matter of minutes. Come check it out today.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Artists in Action Blooms of Kindness
Participate in the Citywide Kindness Event and Scavenger Hunt BY DEBBY TEICH
A
n act of kindness is any act that requires you to put someone else’s needs before your own. City of Kindness is a coalition of organizations working to make the world a better place by inspiring kindness that will affect meaningful change among schools, professionals, young people, elected officials, and companies. On February 9, the City of Pembroke Pines and the School Board of Broward County invite families and friends to join the effort by participating in a City of Kindness event: Kindness/Compassion/Forgiveness. It will be held from 11am to 2pm, at Walter C. Young Middle School Gymnasium, 901 NW 129 Avenue. “As a city of great diversity, we are proud to participate in our annual City of Kindness event,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “Each year more and more people join us, which really warms our hearts. We have a great and very kind community.” Held during lunchtime, residents can pack a picnic lunch and fully invest themselves in the spirit of
peace day. During the Community Peace Meal Picnic, everyone will be encouraged to make random acts of kindness promises, as they enjoy musical entertainment performed by children from different Pembroke Pines area schools and much more. Families will have an opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere and decorate their Picnic Areas by embellishing their picnic blankets, baskets, backpacks, totes and coolers. Residents and friends may tag their acts of kindness with #PinesIsKind. The Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center is also participating in the effort this year to bring a smile to someone’s face and hopefully brighten their day. The Center’s “Artists in Action” Pottery students and staff will be planting the seeds of kindness to see what blooms in a citywide “scavenger hunt” meant to promote positivity and kindness. The group has created colorful handcrafted stoneware “blooms” that will be hidden around Pembroke Pines in public places for someone to find.
When you find a bloom, take a picture of it and say where you found it, then post on the group’s Facebook page – “Artists in Action Blooms of Kindness Project,” #PinesBloomsOfKindness, so everyone can follow its journey. Finders can keep the bloom, give it to someone who really needs it, or re-hide the bloom in a new location. It can be hidden locally or maybe even taken on vacation and hidden in other places all around the world! “We felt that creating these “Blooms of Kindness” for our community would be a great way to interact with people and send a message to promote positivity and kindness,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor. “We could all use a little more kindness in our lives. Maybe finding these blooms will bring a little smile to someone and perhaps they will pass that smile on to someone else.” To pledge your kindness promise and learn about the kind movement, visit www.cityofkindness.org. Heart health: Important questions to ask your doctor. Your heart is like the engine in your car. It’s the main component that makes everything run. And just like your car requires maintenance to keep things running smoothly, your heart needs care on a regular basis too. “The center of the cardiovascular system is the Robert Cubeddu, MD heart, It’s responsible for your vitality,” says Robert Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of the Tomsich Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida. Taking care of your heart is essential for a long life. Heart disease is the number one killer of adults in the United States. Some heart issues are genetic and others are caused by personal choices. Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist Diego Sadler, MD explains, “Not only is it important for patients to listen to their doctor, it’s also important for them to ask their physician the right questions.” Drs. Cubeddu and Sadler provide general Diego Sadler, MD answers to these important questions about heart health. However, your doctor knows you best and can provide personalized answers to help ensure that you understand how to take proper care of your heart. Will blood tests and other screenings tell me if my heart is healthy? Knowing your BMI, cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels will give you a clearer picture of your cardiovascular strengths or risks. “These numbers can be indicators for issues that can lead to cardiovascular problems,” says Dr. Sadler.
Does my family medical history put me at a greater risk for heart disease? Anyone can be at risk, but a family history of heart issues – such as heart attack and heart disease – can mean you have increased risk for developing heart problems. If this is the case, healthy behaviors may be even more important for you. Will smoking increase my chances of having heart disease? Individuals who smoke are more likely to experience heart attacks than non-smokers. “The sooner you quit the better,” advises Dr. Cubeddu. Are diet and exercise important for keeping my heart in tip-top shape? A healthy diet and exercise are some of the best tools you can use to keep your heart healthy. At least 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week, is recommended. Eat foods that are low in fat, salt and calories. Include fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, lean proteins and nuts. “Having an open dialogue with your physician and asking questions are the best ways for you to learn about what to do before cardiovascular issues arise,” says Dr. Cubeddu. To learn more about what you can do to keep your heart healthy, visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Heart. FSU Charter Elementary Students Participate in KAPOW Program BY DEBBY TEICH
S
tudents in Yohanna Deno’s fifth grade class at FSU Charter Elementary have been learning about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. Once a month, Philip Mordente, Construction Administrator for the City of Pembroke Pines, visits the students to reinforce these concepts through lessons and on-site visits. It is all part of KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work). KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships that introduce students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life.
“The KAPOW program provides a wonderful opportunity for the children to meet people in the working world and get some hands-on experience,” said Deno, who has been participating in the KAPOW program for the past seven years. “The kids really look forward to Philip Mordente’s visit each month.” As Construction Administrator, Mordente oversees the Work Order Program for the City of Pembroke Pines, processing, assigning and completing all maintenance requests. During the lessons, he uses hands-on fun activities to involve the children and keep them interested. He has also organized several on-site visits, including Charles F. Dodge City Center, Pembroke Pines Fire Department and Studio 18 in the Pines. “We want to present the work place in a way that the students can see, feel and touch,” said Mordente. “The students have the opportunity to ask questions and make observations to get a better understanding of how they could apply their skill sets to future employment situations.”
For the last lesson, the students will attend the fire training facility. They will learn about the daily responsibilities of a fire fighter. They will also have an opportunity to dress in fire gear and play with the fire hoses. KAPOW is always looking for businesses or individual volunteers interested in participating in the program. It is an opportunity to change a young person’s life forever in only seven hours. For information, send an email to taniakapow@gmail.com or call 305-338-5548.

Slender Fit U Will Help You Lose Weight and Get Healthier BY DEBBY TEICH
I
s focusing on your health and well-being at the top of your list of New Year’s resolutions? After celebrating the holidays with family and friends and indulging in high calorie foods at festive meals and parties, are your clothes feeling a little tighter and the numbers on the scale a little higher? If you have struggled with diets in the past, Slender Fit U can help you lose that holiday bulge and achieve your goal of getting healthier in 2019. It works fast - without exercise and hunger pains! Slender Fit U is helping clients lose the weight, get healthier and even reduce or eliminate medications with a very simple to follow medically supervised weight loss program. Clients typically lose 1⁄2 to 1 pound of actual body fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods. The Slender Fit U program also helps clients modify their relationship with food and eating habits, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher, often referred to as the “HCG Guru,” truly understands the benefits of the program and works closely with her clients to help them achieve maximize results. She lost 25 pounds in six weeks on Geri Kelleher, Owner the program and has and Program Director kept it off for 11 years. Slender Fit U changed her life forever. Soon after, she started helping others achieve their own weight loss goals. In 2010, she opened a clinic in Davie. A few years later she opened a second clinic in Coral Springs. Geri answered some commonly asked questions about the Slender Fit U program. What do love most about your job? The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Over the years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this easy program. How does Slender Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage available for weight loss. Do you offer B12 shots? Yes. We also give injectable prescription B12. The Lipotropic Vitamin B12 shots help detoxify the liver and increase metabolism and energy levels. The combination of HCG and B12 helps assure maximum weight loss without feeling hungry all the time or suffering from bad moods. Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this
was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” How much can clients expect to lose? The typical person will lose ½ to 1 pound of body fat per day without exercise or special foods. How many programs do you offer? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. On the 23-day program, women typically lose 15 pounds and men will typically lose 20 to 25 pounds. On the 46-day program, the numbers average 30 pounds for women and 40-50 pounds for men. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the HCG/B12 program, you go on a threeweek maintenance program, gradually introducing a higher calorie diet and making sure that you do not gain any more than two or three pounds. This will then help lock in a new “normal” weight for your body allowing you to more easily maintain the weight loss as you return to normal eating. The diet helps “rebalance” the metabolism. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, you easily modify your relationship with food and eating to maintain long- term weight loss. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Before starting the diet, you will get a physical examfrom one of the medical doctors associated with the program. This is included in the cost of the program and involves no co-pay on your part. David lost 53 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

Maria lost 27 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

"I'm very happy with my results. It is also a very friendly environment. I will recommend Slender Fit U to my friends and family." – Maria
Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low-calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed. How does the weight loss program work? It is a scientifically researched program that combines HCG and a low-calorie diet during the 23 or 46-day program. HCG, which is short for Human Chronic Gonadotropin, is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists normally in men and women. The female body uses this substance during pregnancy where high levels are produced to almost completely control the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? Because HCG is a natural substance, the program is very safe with no side effects. What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes proteins, fruit and vegetables. This makes for an easy transition onto stabilization and then back to regular life. Are clients hungry on the diet? Most people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They are getting anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat, depending on how much fat they have. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. Slender Fit U clients usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800-calorie limit!

"I feel incredible. I haven't weighed this little in at least a decade. The diet was easy to follow and I lost over 50 pounds. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is serious about losing a lot of weight." – David

Pembroke Pines Teacher to Present Project at Idea Expo BY DEBBY TEICH
O
n February 16, Broward County Public Schools teachers will share creative and leading-edge ideas that engage and motivate students at Broward Education Foundation’s 22nd Annual Innovative Teacher Idea Expo, held at Nova Southeastern University. Teachers will have the opportunity to learn about and experience first-hand more than 50 original projects from local teachers that are funded by Broward Education Foundation grants. Gisela Naranjo, STEAM enrichment Teacher at City of Pembroke Pines Charter School Elementary - East Campus, will be presenting her “Pop Into Engineering” project. “By sharing my ideas, I allow other teacher to use my project,” said Naranjo. “It allows them to see that they can be creative and innovative too.” Engineering is one the most complex, innovative, and creative applications of science and mathematics. The field of engineering studies the principles of intricate design, machines, structure, and technology. In Naranjo’s project, 4th grade students work in collaborative groups using creativity, intuition, and an understanding of various fields to create a pop-up book about a specific field of engineering. Using complex paper-folding techniques and precise measurements, students must create a variety
of pop-up techniques that work properly. They have to rely on skills they will need in real world situations in the future, such as research skills, writing skills, math skills and visual arts talents.
The book must provide a minimum of 10 everyday items/things that these types of engineers work on and explain how they are involved with these items/ things. They must explain how this type of engineer-

ing helps them in their everyday life and include an example of what a day in the life of an engineer might be like. It also needs to include the average salary, necessary education and experience, as well as major advancements/projects/designs currently being worked on. “The project allows students to learn about engineering and the many ways it affects our lives,” said Naranjo. “They also learn about the many careers available to them in the future. My students loved working on this project.” Naranjo is passionate about teaching, especially in the areas of math and science. She credits this passion to the wonderful science and math teachers she had as a child. As a hands-on learner, she understands the frustration when a student does not understand or is unable to grasp a concept when it is not shared in various teaching methods. Many of her lessons include movement, visuals, and hands-on learning through the use of games, music, competitions or even use of computers and art. “I have found in my years teaching that sharing my creativity with my students makes learning fun,” said Naranjo, who has been teaching for eight years. “They grow creatively and academically with each project. It is an amazing sight.”

Does Your Child Have Growing Pains Or Are They Just Flat Footed? BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
F
oot, ankle and leg problems in a growing child are also considered to be growing pains in the bones and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems including flat feet. Excessively flat feet or feet that point to the outside while walking or running are the primary causes. Many of these children are also knock-kneed. They can also have tight muscles, especially the calf muscles, hamstrings and hips. Signs and symptoms include leg pain, especially at night. There is pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg bone, ankle and foot including the arch. They often have premature fatigue with activity and they avoid activities and sports. Lower back pain may also be felt.
It is important for these children to avoid going barefooted. Changing shoes to get more support will certainly help as will having an insole or a custom molded orthotic made to realign the foot and ankle. In most cases this will eliminate the pain overnight. Many of these kids have flat feet and tight calf muscles. In those cases, we stretch the calf muscles before we make an orthotic to give the calf muscle flexibility and the ankle better movement. When an orthotic is made the children are back to playing all sports and activities at a much higher level than before. The prognosis is almost always excellent. n Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board-Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. ASK THE MAYOR
Pembroke Pines Update BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS n this New Year, please take a few minutes today to ensure your home has the appropriate number of smoke alarms and that they are properly located and regularly tested and maintained. Smoke alarms have become such a common feature in U.S. homes that it is easy to take them for granted. They are, however a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give an early warning so it’s faster to get outside. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department has these suggestions to ensure residents remain safe and uninjured when there is a home fire: ► A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. ► Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. ► Install alarms on every level of the home. ► If possible, smoke alarms should be interconnected so that when one sounds, they all sound. Please remember that a large home may need extra smoke alarms. ► Be sure to test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. ► For more tips, please visit it our website at www.ppines.com.

Lipo Abdominoplasty for Body Sculpting
“STYMIE ”
BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
L
ipoabdominoplasty is an advanced technique bringing significant change to the traditional tummy tuck. The procedure involves a combination of traditional liposuction with an open skin and fat removal procedure, typically referred to as a tummy tuck. The combination of the two procedures enables the plastic surgeon to better contour and shape the abdomen and the adjacent areas more completely. Patients who have experienced increased skin laxity and excess fat deposition in the abdomen, hips, and waist can now transform their bodies into a more beautiful shape. This procedure is ideal for patients who have excess skin and fat with abdominal weakness, commonly seen after childbirth, weight loss, and with the alterations that are seen with the aging process. Lipoabdominoplasty safely combines suction-assisted lipectomy (liposuction) with abdominal muscle tightening and skin removal. The fat which is removed via lipoaspiration can be added to other areas of contour deficiency like the buttocks through fat grafting or transfer. This combination reshapes the entire midsection and buttock giving the individual the shapely body contour they desire. The technique should be used with caution in patients who have a history of smoking or previous abdominal surgery and should be performed only by experienced surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. There are a number of important variables that determine whether a patient is a candidate for a lipoabdominoplasty. For any plastic surgical procedure to be a complete success, medical and psychological fitness for surgery is a prerequisite. The appropriate patient typically is close to their ideal body weight with anatomic features that may be improved surgically, including loose skin, excess fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. The distribution of fat is one determinant of the improvement a patient will have from a tummy tuck. Fat in the superficial tissue is the type that is possible to pinch. This superficial fat may be removed through excision (tummy tuck) or aspiration (liposuction). If skin laxity or looseness is significant, the skin and fat should be removed with a tummy tuck. If the skin elasticity is adequate; however, the superficial fat may be removed through liposuction alone. Liposuction may flatten the abdomen, but it will not tighten the skin significantly. Patients who have soft, distended abdomens frequently have lax muscles or a separation of rectus muscle in the midline known as diastasis. This is common after multiple pregnancies making it a great procedure for ‘Mommy Makeovers’ or significant weight loss patients. When patients have excess skin that extends to the lateral hips and lower back or buttocks, an extended or circumferential abdominoplasty may be necessary. For most patients the resultant incision is well hidden within underwear and bathing suit lines. The procedure usually takes 2 – 3 hours. Patients should prepare to rest for a minimum of one to two weeks after their procedure. Pet of the Month
This is Stymie. Trained as a companion/service dog who retired after three years is just over twelve years old. He never leaves my side. Quite annoying at times, now, he most often sleeps 28 hours a day. He is almost deaf, except sounds that only dogs can hear plus the opening of a ziplock bag with licorice, he loves to eat. Now both of us retired, you can find us in the Pembroke Lakes Mall walking around greeting people in his stroller.

BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE ost people want to avoid the need to probate their estate as the process is expensive, time consuming and public. Yet, there are commonly held misconceptions surrounding this topic which often lead to uniformed decisions resulting in the need to have an estate probated. While the best way to avoid probate is to discuss your situation with an experienced estate planning attorney, let’s take a look at just a few probate and estate planning myths: I’ll leave my home to my children through a will to avoid probate. This is the most common estate planning myth! The truth is that inherited property cannot be retitled, or sold, without the participation and approval of the probate court, which requires probate administration for the deceased. Adding my child to my deed is a great way to avoid probate. While your property will indeed pass without probate after you die, there is much risk when adding someone to your deed. The child’s interest in the home is not shielded from creditors via Homestead protection if it is not their primary residence. A fractional interest in the property owned by a person who does not reside there will not qualify for Homestead tax benefits, so your property taxes will increase. What if your child has creditors or is involved in a lawsuit? Or what if he or she divorces? Finally, as your child is listed as an owner, they must participate and sign off on any decision to sell or refinance the property. I like to save money. Can I obtain the necessary forms and handle the probate of an estate myself without the expense of an attorney? In Florida, almost all probate cases require an attorney. There is a narrow exception for very small estates where the amount of assets is only sufficient to pay for the funeral and final expenses of the decedent. My cousin’s estate was settled in just a few months in Michigan, so I’m expecting the same experience. In Florida, most simple estates can be probated within a year. But keep in mind that because of staffing shortages and backlogs in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, the process can easily take as long as 18 months. More complex estates, taxable estates, or estates with disputes among family members may take several years to settle. sA revocable living trust can help you avoid probate, but only if your trust is fully funded. With some important exceptions, all of your real property, personal property and business interests should be transferred into your trust while you are alive. If your trust is not properly funded, many assets may still have to go through a probate after your death before reaching your trust and its beneficiaries, causing delay, additional cost and avoidable complexity. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

The Benefits of the Collaborative Process BY EVAN BARON he Collaborative Process is a non-adversarial option for individuals to resolve most family law related matters. Although the concept of collaborative law is not new and it is a prevalent practice throughout the world, many individuals are unaware that this option exists or what the benefits of partaking in this process are. Below are some characteristics of this process that individuals should consider before embarking in a family case. Convenient: Traditional litigation involves court appearances during regular work and business hours often times requiring individuals to be at the mercy of the Judge’s schedule and availability. The Collaborative Process offers individuals more control and allows them to better accommodate their families’ particular needs and preferences. Expeditious: Rather than submitting to the time-consuming aspects of traditional litigation, families take part in team meetings that create an effective environment conducive to resolving cases efficiently and usually quicker than traditional Court litigation which is often drawn out. However, should individuals desire to hit the pause button or slow down the process for whatever reason, this is an option in the collaborative process. The same is not the case in traditional litigation. Often times, once a case has been on a judge’s docket for a certain length of time, the Judge at his or her discretion may decide to demand the case move along otherwise the judge can dismiss the case for lack of activity.

Reduced Stress: The collaborative process affords families the opportunity to choose a more holistic approach to resolving their case. One that not only provides families with more control over every aspect of their case, but also affords families peace of mind and the opportunity to resolve their case in a transparent and non-adversarial setting which will benefit all individuals involved, especially minor children. Less costly: Traditional litigation involves the preparation of various pleadings and attending court hearings that do not always result in progress being made on a case. The Collaborative Process eliminates the need for a long, and at times, vexatious litigation process. This allows individuals to spend their retainer on meetings and events that result in substantial progress being made in their case and ultimately saves families money while getting them to resolve their case more efficiently. The attorneys at Evan H. Baron & Associates have gone through extensive additional training in the Collaborative Divorce Process. This training greatly improves the success rate, making us highly qualified to assist anyone interested in this option. If you or anyone you know is interested in the collaborative process and would like more information on how to get started, please contact our office. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160. HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Understanding the Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES hen you or a loved one are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, you may find comfort in knowing what to expect. Understanding the stages of the disease helps you and your family to plan ahead, recognize symptoms, and find support. The better you understand Alzheimer’s ahead of time, the more prepared you can feel to live with the disease. Preclinical Alzheimer’s While we usually consider there to be three stages of Alzheimer’s – mild, moderate, and severe – the disease actually begins well before any symptoms show. Alzheimer’s usually develops slowly and becomes worse over time, according to the Mayo Clinic. In the preclinical stage, you won’t see changes in yourself or your loved one, but research into this early phase could eventually help with earlier diagnosis. Mild Alzheimer’s Even though there isn’t an exact Alzheimer’s timeline, there are symptoms you can expect in certain stages. People in early-stage Alzheimer’s may have trouble recalling the right word or name, or finding an item they misplaced. We all struggle with forgetfulness at times, but even in its mild stage, Alzheimer’s goes beyond that, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. People with mild Alzheimer’s might also have difficulty planning, organizing, or getting tasks done in social or work environments. Moderate Alzheimer’s If your loved one is living with middle-stage Alzheimer’s, their symptoms will be clearer to you than they were in the early stage. In the moderate stage, symptoms go beyond forgetfulness and trouble staying organized, extending to difficulties with daily tasks and even changes in mood. You or your loved one may have a harder time remembering what day it is, your own personal history, and you may be more likely to feel upset, especially when presented with something mentally taxing.
W
Severe Alzheimer’s In the last stage of Alzheimer’s, your loved one will be more unaware of their surroundings, have trouble communicating, and need help with activities of daily living like bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom. Because people living with severe Alzheimer’s need 24/7 care, families often turn to memory care communities in this stage. A memory care community can help provide peace of mind for you and your family, as they are experienced professionals who can give your loved one the support they need with heartfelt attention. Artis Senior Living of Davie is a new Memory Care Assisted Living located at 2794 South Flamingo Road in Davie. The community includes a central core, known as the “Town Center” flanked by four distinct “neighborhoods” that serve as intimate living spaces. It was designed to provide residents with the comforts of home, as well as the opportunity to engage as a member of our community. For information, call 954-990-8941, send an email to davie@artismgmt.com or visit www.artisseniorliving.com. 48 FEBRUARY 2019 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
