South Florida Takes Pride in Historic Significance

O

n an early April day, a bit more than 500 years ago, Spanish Explorer Ponce De Leon landed near what is now Saint Augustine and claimed it for the Spanish crown. He subsequently sailed down the east coast surveying the land in what is now Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. It is amazing how far we’ve come since those fateful days. At the time of Ponce De Leon’s arrival, the only residents of South East Florida were a Native American tribe known as the Tequesta. The region’s total population at the time is estimated to have been between 800 and a few thousand inhabitants. The population remained largely unchanged for the next 400 years. Shortly after its founding, Broward County had a population just over 5,000 people and consisted mostly of uninhabitable wetlands. Today, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties are home to more than five million people; few areas in the world have grown faster over the past century. We have the fifth and sixth largest school districts in the United States. The region also boasts a vibrant economy and diverse culture. The area’s rapid growth and unique climate have brought unique challenges: Will we be able to continue to create jobs for continued immigration and the maturation of the huge population of school-aged kids? How will we manage rising sea levels in a region so dependent on tourism? Can we continue to integrate the varied backgrounds and perspectives of residents and newcomers? How can we guarantee freedom and safety for all? We are optimistic. South Florida is a young, dynamic region that has solved difficult problems in the past and will do it again in the future. Our brightest days are still ahead. We, for our part, are proud to be part of this community and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Sincerely,

Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

Relay For Life Event Will Celebrate 20 Years of Hope BY DEBBY TEICH

I

n the U.S. this year, there will be an estimated 1.7 million new cancer cases diagnosed and 601,000 cancer deaths. On April 13, thousands of people who have been touched by cancer will gather at Walter C Young Middle School for the 20th Annual Relay For Life of Pembroke Pines. During the 15-hour overnight event (from Friday, April 13 at 6pm to Saturday, April 14 at 9am) for ages 3 to 93, teams of people will camp out and members of each team will take turns walking around the high school track. It will last all night, because cancer never sleeps. Relay For Life is the nationwide signature event of the ACS. It gives participants a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Anyone can volunteer, form a team, or join a team. Since it began, the Pembroke Pines Relay For Life has raised approximately $2.5 million. This year’s goal is $200,000. The overnight event features a variety of activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer. Participants in the 2017 event

The event kicks off with the Opening Ceremony. Next, during the Survivors Lap, survivors and people currently affected by cancer take the first lap around the track surrounded by a cheering crowd. During the Caregivers Lap, caregivers are honored as they walk a lap, often with the person they supported. During the Luminaria Ceremony, which takes place after dark, candles are lit inside of personalized bags that are placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those affected by cancer. Throughout the night, there will also be entertainment, music, food and fun to build camaraderie in a family-friendly environment for the entire community. Organizers are currently collecting photos for the 2018 Luminaria Slide Show. Submit photos by emailing them to relay.andy@att.net. They are also collecting canned food items to weigh down the Luminarias. The cans will be donated to a local food bank after the event. To donate cans, send an email to CHyacinth@ pinescharter.net. To join the Mayor’s Team or support the fundraiser, call 954-392-2116. Cancer survivors can contact the American Cancer Society at 954-200-7534 to learn of special ways they may participate in the event. Adults and Teens Can Find Ways to Give Back at the Volunteer Expo BY DEBBY TEICH

M

any teens and adults are looking for volunteer opportunities as a way to earn service hours for school or simply to give back to the community. At the Teen & Adult Volunteer Expo, they can connect with a wide variety of local organizations that need their help. The event will be held on May 5, from 1pm-3pm, at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library, located at 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. In the past, the event has been dedicated to teens. Over 500 students typically attend. This year, the Expo will also include opportunities for adults. “Because of the success of previous events, we know there is a high demand for places our community members want to give back,” said Lynn Morrison, Youth Services Librarian Supervisor. “The local events in

the past year have increased the attitude and enthusiasm of giving back, so we hope to facilitate that amongst even more of our patrons.” The Expo is like “speed dating” for volunteer work. On one day, in one place, teens and adults will be able to match their interests with various organizations. Within two hours, attendees can sample between 25-40 different organizations, both large and small. They will have an opportunity to talk to the people who manage the organization’s volunteer programs, as well as other adults or teens who have volunteered for the organization. More organizations will participate this year than in previous events, providing even more diversity in the kinds of experiences avail-

able. Already confirmed are: HandsOn Broward, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County, F.R.I.E.N.D.S Horse Rescue, Flamingo Gardens, Friends of Southwest Regional Library, Heartland Hospice, Memorial Hospital Miramar, Friends of Literacy of Broward County Learning Services, Pembroke Pines Civil Air Patrol, Broward County Parks, Marine Industries of South Florida, and many more. The event will also include a food drive, which will benefit local food pantries. “We hope our citizens will find some matches that not only pique their interest, but perhaps become a passion,” said Morrison. “Sometimes the greatest sense of satisfaction may result from something beyond a paycheck.” For information about the Teen & Adult Volunteer Expo, call 954-357-6733. Non-profits who want to get involved can call 954-357-6976.

Pembroke Pines YMCA Family Center Hosts Healthy Kids Day BY STACEY BOMSER

G

et a head start on summer fun at Healthy Kids Day at the Pembroke Pines YMCA Family Center on Saturday, April 21st. The free community event is a chance for children and parents to explore the many opportunities available at the Y this summer to keep kids’ minds and bodies active. “Healthy Kids Day is part of a national Y initiative to improve health and well-being for children and families,” explains Tongelia Milton, executive director of communications for YMCA of South Florida. “It will feature activities such as Y-Fit games and arts and crafts, as well as educational information on nutrition and healthy living designed to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home.” Milton says it’s important to keep kids active, especially during the summer months. “Research shows that children gain weight two to three times faster during the summer vacation than during the school year. The Y wants to help them stay active and continue learning through our summer programs which have health and educational components.”

20 APRIL 2018 | OURCITYPEMBROKEPINES.COM

The Y promotes family fun and fitness during the summer months. It encourages families to step away from the TV or computer screen and spend time outdoors, engaging in playful activity together for at least an hour a day. At Healthy Kids Day, children can enroll in the Y-Fit youth wellness program, which

combines fun and active play. Physical activity is a large component of the Y’s summer camp programs. Families can learn more about the many options available to all ages from preschool through high school. There will also be demonstrations from some of the Y’s new camps. “Our new summer camp programs are designed

to keep kids learning and active this summer,” shares Milton. “We are offering programs from sports, aquatics, art and science to fitness, performances, leadership training and making new friends. Children can even explore some of South Florida’s natural habitats where they go fishing, canoeing, and see marine life.” Milton is confident the Y’s new two-week camp programs will appeal to busy families as well as children wishing to explore different activities. “Our new two-week Performing Arts, STEM, Teen Camps, and more will give kids an opportunity to do more of what they love.” Healthy Kids Day is a great way to figure out exactly what your child wants to do this summer. Just because school is out doesn’t mean learning needs to stop. According to Milton, “The Y supports families in their efforts to teach healthy habits and keep kids active and learning, preparing them for a brighter future. It’s part of the Y’s promise to strengthen the communities we serve.” Join the Pembroke Pines Y for Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 21st from 10am to 1pm. The Pembroke Pines YMCA Family Center is located at 501 SW 172nd Avenue. For more information visit www.ymcasouthflorida.org.

Learn about Florida’s Environment at the Earth Day Film Festival BY DEBBY TEICH

D

on’t miss the first ever Earth Day Film Festival at the Pembroke Pines City Center! With a spotlight on South Florida film makers, this community film screening features narrative and documentary short films focused on the environment, sustainability and the nature of South Florida. The event will be held On April 14, from 5:30pm - 9:30pm. It is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome. “Giving thanks and taking heed of our natural world is something we should do more often,” said Joshua Carden, Chief Curator of The Frank. “Celebrating Earth Day affirms that we take care of our world and respect the environment. It allows us to take a step back, even if only once a year, to appreciate the natural beauty around us.” The film festival ties into Florida Is…, an exhibition which is ongoing at The Frank in Pembroke Pines through May 19. The exhibit focuses on the natural resources and environment of Florida. Xavier Cortada’s delicate drawings, vibrant largerthan-life projections and community engagement components educate viewers of all ages on the importance of Florida’s ecosystems and encour-

age environmental stewardship. The film festival showcases approximately eight local filmmakers who are concerned with the same environmental themes. It includes the short films, as well as filmmaker panels. “The film festival, as well as the Florida Is… exhibition, will give community members the opportunity to reflect on the beautiful state of Florida that we know and love,” said Carden. “The film festival will be both educational and inspiring, as we promote the importance and beauty of our ecosystem.” The Frank offers several upcoming workshops and lectures related to Florida Is… They are free and open to the public. They include: ▸▸ April 19: The History of Earth Art Lecture and Art Engagement by Fereshteh Toosi, 6:30pm-8:30pm ▸▸ April 28: Reduce, Reuse and Make Music! Area Residents Enjoy Food and Drink at the 9th Annual Taste of Pines BY DEBBY TEICH

A

rea residents had an opportunity to sample some of the finest local cuisine during the 9th Annual Taste of Pines. The soldout event was hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines and held at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. All of the proceeds benefited the Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. “This year’s Taste of Pines was even more spectacular than ever before,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “It’s no wonder we sold out. Our new location at the Charles F. Dodge City Center and the over 60 restaurants that participated really made this a special night for our Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation fundraiser. I can’t wait until next year’s.” Guests selected from a delicious array of unlimited food samples from 62 participating restaurants located in Pembroke Pines and the surrounding area. There was also wine and beer from around the world, as well as music from the Chill Factor Band. The winners from the night were: ▸▸ Best Food - Cabo Flats - Pembroke Pines ▸▸ Best Drink - Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant ▸▸ Best Dessert - Nothing Bundt Cakes The City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System allows Pembroke Pines children to begin their education in a Pembroke Pines Charter elementary school, study in a regional library, graduate from the high school, and continue

their education at Broward College and/or Florida International University. To raise additional funds, PPCSS recently held the Mayor’s Golf Tournament on March 23, as well as the Pines “Light UP the Night” 5K on February 10.

Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie

I

n July 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create

an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. What is “The Artis Way? ” We follow what we call “The Artis Way.” Each letter of the word Artis stands for a tenet of the organization.

▸ “A” is the ability to have a voice. We want residents and their families to engage in open communication with our associates to make sure that what we’re doing is the right fit for them.

30 APRIL 2018 | OURCITYPEMBROKEPINES.COM

▸ “R” is about respecting and maintaining relationships. ▸ “T” stands for treasuring each person’s uniqueness. ▸ “I” is for integrity. We promote dignity and respect. ▸ “S” is for success and recognition.

How many people are affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia? Every 67 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. By 2025, the number of people ages 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million. Dementia is becoming more and more of an epidemic. Therefore, the more quality care we can offer, the more fulfilling the lives of those with dementia can lead.

Chesterbrook Academy Students Donate to Joe DiMaggio BY DEBBY TEICH

S

tudents at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool in Pembroke Pines recently presented a donation to representatives from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital as part of their Heart Healthy Day. They are learning the importance of staying active, as well as helping kids in need. Wearing red clothing, students and staff participated in health and fitness activities led by a personal trainer. Nurses from Joe DiMaggio also held a teddy bear clinic, giving the children an opportunity to “play doctor” with stuffed animals as their patients. They treated the teddy bears with IVs, shots, bandages and more. The school also hosted the 6th Annual Juliana’s Lemonade and Cupcake from the Heart stand to increase awareness about heart disease and the difficulties that children with heart conditions face and raise money for the hospital. Through sales of lemonade and baked goods, students were able to present a check for $900 to the hospital. They also donated more than 75 toys collected in a drive

prior to the event. The toys will help provide comfort to children being treated at the hospital. Pre-k teacher Jasmin Pitts’ daughter, Juliana, has been the inspiration for the fundraiser. Due to her heart condition, Juliana has had 15 surgeries that have allowed her to live a healthy life. “Students learn about what they can do to for their heart health through health and fitness activities led by a personal trainer,” said Jasmin Pitts, who helps coordinates the fundraiser. “They also get to play the role of doctors and nurses by taking part in the teddy bear clinic and learning how to take care of a patient. The children always have a blast on this special day.”

End School Shootings with Real Solutions Marjory Stoneman Douglas Senior, Richard Doan, Shares His Account of the Horrific Parkland Tragedy and Demands Action to Keep Schools Safe verybody looks forward to senior year. After three years of high school (some after just one or two), many people can’t wait to leave and head off to college. Personally, I was looking forward to prom, graduation and infamous senior year shenanigans. I had hopes and dreams of attending a university and embarking on a future career in finance. Preparing for graduation and college was all that was important to me, but within a matter of minutes, all of those beloved goals and aspirations vanished. It was Valentine’s Day. It was supposed to be a day of love and joy, and for most of the day, it was. Up until 2:20 p.m., when the fire alarm went off. I was in the newspaper room when it all happened. We followed the traditional protocol and walked to our designated evacuation zones. We were on our way downstairs when I saw kids running back inside. Teachers yelled at us to run as well. I ran as directed, but in the back of my mind, I thought it was just a drill. Ever since the school board has implemented stricter safety policies this year, there was a rumor going around that we’d have an active shooter drill on campus. For many of us, that’s what we thought it was. The teachers said it was a code red, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t all a drill. We rushed back to the newspaper room, shut the lights off, and huddled into the corner of the classroom. I heard sirens wailing and choppers echoing in the distance. Soon enough, we saw a tweet from the Coral Springs PD to stay away from Stoneman Douglas. That was

when we realized it was not a drill. It was real. Eventually, we transitioned to the classroom closet where we stayed for about an hour and a half. We were scared. We were worried. We were in disbelief. We followed the news as it unraveled online. We watched live streams and kept a close eye on Twitter. It was hot and cramped in the closet, but none of that mattered in this life-ordeath situation. We hear voices in the hallway. “Police reporting,” they said. It was multiple voices. Then with a faint rattling of what I presumed to be keys, our classroom door was opened. I recall someone asked if anyone was there. We didn’t move. We didn’t know who it was. It could’ve been the shooter for all we knew, but my teacher’s intuition told her otherwise. She opened the closet door to the three men in our room. At that moment, I didn’t know if I was going to be shot or be saved. Thankfully, it was a rescue mission. They were SWAT — heavily armed and heavily protected. Their flashlights shone upon our faces, and we were ordered to step out with our hands up. The SWAT team then secured our room and the building. Eventually, they escorted a large number of students and faculty from neighboring classrooms to our room. One hundred sixty-seven students and teachers in total gathered in this one room. Later, we were moved to the media center where we sat and were given directions about evacuation for a few minutes. Then with our hands up and tears streaking down our face, we fled the building and exited the school. I saw papers scattered all over Courtesy: Suzanna Barna

the floor along with Valentine’s Day flowers and stuffed animals. When we stepped out, our eyes met a sea of law enforcement, ambulances and media surrounding our school. I was in utter shock. This is my school. This all happened here. Initially, I was in complete disbelief. I didn’t process it all yet. I am probably still processing it. This is my hometown: Parkland, Florida. Marjory Stoneman Douglas is my school. This is supposed to be a safe place. Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Las Vegas. This is the stuff we hear on the news, but no one ever thought it could happen here. If a mass shooting like this can happen here, it can happen absolutely anywhere. I am frustrated. There were signs. As with any mass shootings or suicide, there were signs. Yet they were overlooked, and because of that, 17 beautiful and innocent lives were taken away too soon. As for my mom, she’s been through the Vietnam War as a young child, yet she says that nothing compares to what she felt this past

Wednesday. It may sound cliché, but this truly was a parent’s worst nightmare. There is no greater fear than not knowing whether your children are safe, whether they will make it out alive, whether you’ll ever be able to tell your child that you love them again. In all the chaos, I forgot to return my mother’s messages for an hour. She tells me that was the worst hour of her life as she feared for her boy, not knowing if she would ever see me again. We are taking our time to grieve and to pray. People from around the world send their thoughts and prayers to us, and for that, we are truly appreciative. But frankly, thoughts and prayers themselves don’t do much. We must turn our thoughts and prayers into action. Our community feels distraught yet invigorated. The media is here. The whole world is watching, and this is our chance to be heard and make a difference. That way, something like this will not happen anywhere else. No one deserves to feel the

My friends and I have started the #NeverAgain movement to ensure that nowhere else has to endure a tragedy like this, that nowhere else do people have to suffer the pain that we feel. Unfortunately, however, our cause has quickly been twisted into a partisan debate. Far-right conservatives argue that we students are in fact not students, but crisis actors, travelling to scenes of tragedies to push some liberal anti-gun agenda. We wish we are acting. We wish this is all a hoax. We wish these deep emotions of misery, anger and frustration aren’t real. But it’s not. We are students. This is real and we

torment that we are experiencing right now. No one deserves to lose a loved one this way, and we are taking steps to ensure that this never happens again. Mass shootings in America aren’t anything new. Gun violence isn’t something rare, but it definitely cannot be something we get used to. Here in Parkland, we are turning our mess into a message and our pain into power. We are the voices for change. This is our moment to be heard. The media is here now, and they’ll probably be here for the next few days or weeks. But after that, they’ll be gone, and our story will probably just become a passing memory. So the time to act is now. My classmates and I are just children. The people in D.C. are the adults, and they must step up and do their jobs – protect and preserve this nation that we all hold so dear. Let our voices reach the legislative offices up in D.C. and get our congressmen and women to act. My friends are dead. Children are dead. Blood is spilled on the floor of our classrooms. We must do everything we can to ensure that Marjory Stoneman Douglas is the last school to suffer from a mass shooting. This isn’t an issue of red vs. blue. This is an issue about life and human suffering. It is rather a moral issue that can be solved through political action. Legislators and the people in office must do all they can to preserve life and protect the people of

Through bipartisanship and working across the political aisle, I believe it can happen. I believe in compromise. Practically everyone recognizes that there is a need for change. Though people have their own views on how to enact such change, there is nothing wrong with a difference of opinions. Such divergence can in fact foster intelligent discussion and the exploration of all possible options, but we must let all viewpoints be heard and acknowledged. I believe most feel we need to pass some common-sense gun laws. I believe we can agree that we must keep guns out of the hands of those who show signs of malicious intent. I believe we can agree upon widening the information stored in background check databases and increasing restrictions on the acquisition of firearms for the mentally ill. From there, we’ll work upwards to ensure the safety of our nation’s children without sacrificing the liberties the foundation of America grants us. Change is new and change can be daunting. Not all changes work but doing nothing isn’t going to solve anything. Let us set aside our political differences to work together. Let us initiate change for the common cause of the preservation of life. Let us use our hindsight as foresight and shape our way to a better future. It didn’t happen after Columbine in 1999, but it will happen now, and the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas will be the ones behind it. It is all to save a life – maybe even 17, hopefully more.

ASK THE EXPERT

Developmental Flatfoot in Children BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

D

evelopmental flatfoot is one of the most common conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it, and there IS cause for some concern.

CAUSES:

▸▸ Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. ▸▸ Congenital bone abnormalities. ▸▸ Trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch. ▸▸ Tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the severe foot deformity.

SYMPTOMS:

▸▸ Young children may constantly prefer to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. ▸▸ Leg pain, especially at night. ▸▸ Premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers. ▸▸ Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity. ▸▸ Occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain.

SIGNS:

▸▸ Lowering or complete collapse of the arch. ▸▸ Front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. ▸▸ Knock-knees. ▸▸ The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination or when the patient is standing. ▸▸ A child that is overweight and lacks athletic ability. ▸▸ General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children. ▸▸ Abnormal shoe wear. ▸▸ The child or teenager does not run correctly.

TREATMENT:

▸▸ Complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). ▸▸ Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and to help to improve overall coordination. ▸▸ Occasionally immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles. ▸▸ Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position. In most cases this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. ▸▸ In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem.

Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over the past decade. In 2017, it was Farah Tejpar, MD estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Farah Tejpar, MD, Medical Director for the Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon and Half Marathon, to answer key questions about running, and how runners of all types can prepare.

Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons. Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.

Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. For an appointment with Dr. Tejpar or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida sports health specialist, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/sportshealth.

nce again, the City of Pembroke Pines was named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of our commitment to effective urban forest management. Our city has achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. We are very proud of our city’s commitment to these goals. Our community benefits greatly when trees are properly planted and maintained. Trees not only bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, they also provide cleaner air, improve storm water management and increase property values. I’d also like to share with everyone a meeting that was held last month with 40 clergy from throughout the city. We met for breakfast to learn what we can do to unite as a community and address concerns shared by all. This breakfast meeting was scheduled weeks before Parkland’s horrific mass school shooting; however, it could not have come at a more needed and appropriate time. The honesty and passion of these community leaders regarding issues we’re facing today was awe-inspiring. We openly discussed the myriad of critical issues changing our world for the worse. I look forward to scheduling more such meetings in an effort to help us strengthen our foundation as a community in these very troubling times. On a more celebratory note, I’d like to invite everyone to come out and participate in our 58th Birthday on Saturday, April 28, from 12pm-6pm, at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, 601 City Center Way, in Pembroke Pines. This year’s Pines Day event is bigger and better than ever with children’s rides, live music, entertainment, pageants, food, games and, of course, our 10-foot birthday cake. Please visit http://www.pinesday.com for all event information or call our Special Events office at 954-392-2116. I encourage everyone to check our website at www.ppines.com for more events and special programs offered throughout the city. If you haven’t yet already, please “like” us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – just click on their icons on the website homepage and you’ll be instantly connected to what’s happening in Pembroke Pines. You can also register to get notifications via “Notify Me” and CodeRed. Effective, accurate and timely information is critical, and we are doing our very best to ensure our residents and businesses are always up to-date. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Starting the Planning Process: The Three P’s of Estate Planning BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

M

More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.

ost clients who initiate estate planning do so to provide for their loved ones’ needs, and to avoid burdening their family after they are gone with the delay and expense of probate. No matter your reason for initiating estate planning, it is imperative that you understand what your options are and how thoughtful estate planning can work for you. Your plan may be simple (just a will), or more complex (a revocable living trust). Let’s examine the estate planning process by exploring the areas we refer to as the three P’s of estate planning.

People Who are the important people in your life? They likely include your loved ones: your spouse or partner, children and grandchildren and perhaps your parents, siblings or other relatives. Beyond these individuals, your important “people” could also include charities, special causes, colleges or universities and/or churches or temples to which you are connected. For some, important people may also include beloved pets. Spend some time thinking about the impact others have had on your life. Make a list and jot notes. This is how the planning process begins.

Property We use the term property to refer to your assets in general. Start another list of the assets you own or control. At this point, you do not need to identify policy or account numbers, or exact dollar values, but rather think about your assets in terms of their nature (cash, stocks, bonds, businesses, real estate), their value and your ownership interest. Do you own assets in your name only, in joint tenancy with someone else or through some other arrangement? Be sure to include often overlooked assets such as life insurance, money owed to you and any inheritance you may expect to receive.

After identifying the important people in your life and your property, the next step is to consider planning for your own incapacity or death. This step may be the most challenging. Who would you select to make decisions for you if you could no longer do so yourself? Would the same person handle your finances and your personal and health care decisions? Who would care for your minor children? Who will run your business? How would you distribute your assets to your “people?” Would you like to minimize the impact of estate taxes? How would you protect your beneficiaries from creditors and predators, and maximize the impact of a charitable bequest? Is there a member of your family with special needs whom you would like to provide for? Finally, is there someone who perhaps should not receive an outright inheritance, without third-party managed care and oversight? These are just a few of the issues to consider when approaching the planning process. An experienced estate planning attorney can help you explore all of these areas and work with you to develop a plan for your unique situation. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. How Does Dementia Affect Executive Functioning? BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES

A

person with dementia often experiences issues related to executive functioning. Planning, problem solving and executing tasks are all elements of executive functioning. These are all skills needed to complete many tasks related to finances and bill paying. Even if a person is not displaying significant issues with memory, there could be problems with the executive functioning. And often this is one of the first signs that family members notice. There are several indicators to look for that your loved one may be having some difficulty. Early in the disease, the person may need longer to figure out the amount to pay when out to a restaurant. Calculating the tip becomes more challenging. When paying in cash, processing the bills and change to put out might require more time than usual. In one example, a gentleman was paying his bill at the register and was using cash. The total came to $21.52. While going through his money, he knew that he needed to leave one of one kind of bill (a $20) and two of another ($1.00 bills). However, the gentleman took several seconds going through his bills and ended up giving the cashier two $20.00 bills and one $1.00 bill instead. The processing and planning difficulty is common. Bill paying takes many of the skills related to executive functioning, therefore, this is an aspect of the person’s life that should be looked at. Paying the bill late or not paying the correct amount are common mistakes that are made. In addition, checks not being signed or filled out completely are other issues seen frequently in persons with dementia. Having a legal representative named is a step that needs to occur for most adults, especially those with some cognitive issues. If this has not been completed, an elder law attorney can be of assistance. The Power of Attorney can act on behalf of the person as needed and in most cases, can have communication with banks, other financial institutions, and companies. It is important to provide help to your loved one, but also to maintain their dignity. Giving up financial control is a difficult step in the disease. Having a conversation with the person about the importance of financial security may be the first step and then to offer assistance. Family members often take away the task completely which may leave the person feeling diminished. Perhaps set up a day or two a month to pay bills together. This will allow the person to maintain independence but assuring that the bills are paid properly. If there are more difficulties, you may consider having the bills mailed directly to you to be certain that they are not being misplaced. It may be necessary for a family member to write out the bills and then have the person sign them. And as the disease progresses, the task will most likely need to be completed solely by the responsible party. Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 4/30/18) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Melissa – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Yasmin or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website www.WindmillHealthCenter.com. am often questioned about the process involved in obtaining a “restraining order.” Many people believe that such an Order can be obtained if a husband and wife get into a verbal argument or if someone is harassing them. This is not true and Florida law is very specific as to the requirements needed to seek such an order. First of all, there is in fact really no such legal document as a “restraining order.” The Order that can be obtained is called an Injunction for Protection Against Domestic Violence. As the title suggests, this order is to protect someone from domestic violence, which is defined as any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member. The statute goes on to further explain that anyone who is either the victim of domestic violence or has reasonable cause to believe he or she is in imminent danger of becoming the victim of any act of domestic violence has standing to seek an injunction.

The basis for such an injunction, therefore, must be based upon either acts of violence or acts which would result in the other party having a reasonable belief that there was imminent danger of such violence. Conversely, injunctions will not be issued based upon harassment or threats which do not prove to result in imminent fear of harm. To obtain the Injunction, a sworn affidavit must be filed and presented to a judge. If the Judge feels that the evidence is sufficient, a Temporary Injunction will be issued. This will usually require the Respondent (the person who has the injunction issued against him/her) to vacate the marital residence and to have no contact, direct or indirect, with the complaining party. A hearing will then be held within 15 days, giving both parties the opportunity to present their case to a judge. At that hearing, either party can be represented by an attorney. The Judge will then determine if the Injunction shall remain in effect or whether it shall be dismissed. Injunctions can remain in effect for a certain period of time or indefinitely. The Injunction can also be modified allowing minimal contact to discuss issues such as child visitation. The purpose of this Injunction is to offer protection to someone who has been the victim of domestic violence or has a reasonable fear to believe that he/she will be a victim. Unfortunately, it is sometimes abused by individuals who use it as a means to “get back” or punish their spouse. I often say that the Injunction is to be used as a shield, to protect an individual, and not as a sword to harm someone. The Petition seeking the Injunction is sworn to by the applicant as being true. It is unlawful to lie under oath. Nobody should allow themselves to be a victim of domestic violence. If you are, the law exists for your protection. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston.
