People Are People Wherever You Go

W

e have had the fortune to travel all around the world over the past twenty years. In fact, we have lived in the English countryside, in the urban mega-city of Hong Kong, in swanky Nashville, and in the suburbs of Atlanta. In addition to living in those places, we have visited many more, and seen people of all walks of life: from villagers in rural Thailand to wealthy Europeans vacationing in the Canary Islands. What has been remarkable, throughout our travels, is not the differences we share, but how surprisingly similar people truly are. Don’t get us wrong, there are certainly differences in culture everywhere. A dining delicacy in one country is often considered gross, or worse, in another. However, most people we have met have been primarily focused on the same few values: a safe, peaceful place to raise a family; a sense of pride or validation in their endeavors or occupation; a source of relief from the stresses of our modern world; and belonging to a community. In an era where the twin pressures of globalization and technological innovation often push us in uncomfortable directions and division, it is helpful to remember that there is likely a family just like yours in Nairobi or Singapore or Tehran with ambitions and dreams not too different than the family right next door. In the end, people are people everywhere you go. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Relay For Life Event Will Celebrate 21 Years of Hope BY DEBBY TEICH

I

n the U.S. this year, there will be an estimated 1.8 million new cancer cases diagnosed and 606,880 cancer deaths. On April 5, thousands of people who have been touched by cancer will gather at Walter C Young Middle School for the 21st Annual Relay For Life of Pembroke Pines. During the 15-hour overnight event (from Friday, April 5 at 6pm to Saturday, April 6 at 9am), teams of people will camp out and members of each team will take turns walking around the high school track. It will last all night, because cancer never sleeps. “Each year I see how many volunteers, survivors, family members and friends gather for the Relay and I am filled with gratitude and hope,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “It’s a time of remembrance, honor and celebration. I encourage everyone to come out and be a part of this very moving event that helps so many.” Relay For Life is the nationwide signature event of the ACS. It gives participants a chance to celebrate the

lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Anyone can volunteer, form a team, or join a team. Since it began, the Pembroke Pines Relay For Life has raised approximately $2.5 million.

2018 Relay For Life

The event features a variety of activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer, whether they’ve been diagnosed for 10 days or have been cancer free for 10 years. During the Survivors Lap,

survivors and people currently affected by cancer take the first lap around the track surrounded by a cheering crowd. During the Caregivers Lap, caregivers are honored as they walk a lap, often with the person they supported. During the Luminaria Ceremony, which takes place after dark, candles are lit inside of personalized bags that are placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those affected by cancer. Throughout the night, there will also be entertainment, music, food and fun to build camaraderie in a family-friendly environment for the entire community. The “Beautiful Lengths Ceremony” will return this year. People will have an opportunity to donate eight inches of hair to help create free wigs for cancer patients. Men can also take part in shaving their hair to show support for those who often find this to be one of the hardest parts of treatment. This year’s goal is to beat last year’s record of 140 inches of donated hair and to have as many participants donate over 200 inches of hair. To join the Mayor’s Team or support the fundraiser, call 954-3922116. Cancer survivors can contact the American Cancer Society at 954-200-7534 to learn of special ways they may participate in the event. ASK THE EXPERT

Ankle Pain In Children And Teenagers BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S. causes redness, swell-

T

he ankle joint is a complex structure consisting of bones, ligaments, tendons, growth plates and cartilage that allow the ankle to move smoothly. Many structures can be injured from twisting the foot or ankle in sports or from blunt trauma. Flat feet are a primary source of ankle pain because of the stress that the foot puts on the inside of the ankle and the lower leg. Good supportive shoes and occasionally orthotics will help to give more support and stability. Many cases must be evaluated for potential long-term problems that may necessitate physical therapy or a surgical procedure. Growth plates are present on the inside and outside of the ankle. Injuries to the growth plate or fractures to the bone can occur during sports or general activities. Immediate care is necessary to prevent growth disturbances. Bones and growth plates out of position need to be placed back into the proper position to prevent any long-term problems. Ligament injuries are very common in sports. Ligaments connect the bones together and when the foot twists excessively ligaments can tear. These problems usually necessitate immobilization in a boot or cast to allow the ligaments to heal primarily. Cartilage injuries are rare but when pain in an ankle or foot persists MRIs are necessary to evaluate the bone, bone marrow and cartilage surfaces further. CT scans may also be necessary. Arthroscopic surgery may be necessary in some cases. Infections are rare but they can become very problematic. Any injury that

ing, heat and a generalized fever may need to be addressed immediately. In most cases, antibiotics alone will take care of an infection, but it is necessary to be seen immediately to prevent the need for more aggressive treatment. Inflammatory conditions that affect children must also need to be ruled out. Soft tissue and bone tumors are extremely rare, but if there are bumps or areas of swelling that are noticed they need to be evaluated quickly. The more quickly a child or teenager is evaluated for a foot, ankle or leg problem the better the prognosis. n Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board-Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. He specializes in the treatment of infants, children, teens and adults with injuries, pain and deformities. His associates, Doctors Messina, Cohen, DeSimone, Moya, Bertot, Shenassa, Jones and Goodner, care for all musculoskeletal injuries from head to toe. The South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine in Pembroke Pines is located at 17842 NW 2nd Street, 954-430-9901, in Weston at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, 954-389-5900, and in Plantation at 220 S.W. 84th Avenue, Suite 102, 954-720-1530. Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines Recognizes Pack-a-Sack Donors BY DEBBY TEICH

C

hildren who are hungry often have a difficult time learning and concentrating in school. Members of the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines have been doing their part to make sure that this does not happen by providing needy students with enough food to eat on the weekends. They provide approximately 200 children at Driftwood, Stirling, Pasadena Lakes, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, Pembroke Lakes, Palm Cove, Sunshine, Bethune and A. C. Perry Elementary Schools with weekly bags of food through the Pack-A-Sack Program. The club recently recognized several people who made donations to the program. The Rotary gave a certificate to students from the Interact Club of Flanagan High School who raised $210 for the program. They also recognized Pembroke Pines resident Daniel Vega, who met Rotary member Gail Quigley at a Super Bowl party. When she told him about Pack-a-Sack, he promised to donate any money he won from a football pool. Following through on his promise, he donated $350 to the Pack-a-Sack program. Since he was not able to attend the recognition ceremony, his relatives accepted the award on his behalf. All of the kids in the Pack-A-Sack program receive free lunch and/or breakfast, but have little to eat when school is not in session. To supplement, every Friday they receive bags of food with healthy options that will serve them at least three meals a day with two snacks for two days. During holidays and on long weekends,

26 APRIL 2019 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

they receive some extra protein and sides to cover the extended period. “It is sad to see the kids come running into the cafeteria to eat,” said Gail Quigley, who has been a member of the Rotary for 20 years. “We waste so much food in this country. No child should go hungry. It is critical that they get the proper nutrition in order to be successful.” Over the holidays, the program also provides families with extra food for Thanksgiving, as well as a holiday gift. This year, the West Pines Community Church contributed over 200 meal boxes for Thanksgiving and Christmas break to help ensure each family had the extra needed for the extended break time. The program was founded at New Horizon United Methodist Church, which continues to coordinate the many community partners for the program. For the past seven years, the Rotary Club has also been providing all students at several local elementary schools with a book for the holidays. In December, they purchased 1,800 books to make sure that each student at Sunshine Elementary could have at least two books to read. The same number of books was provided to the students at Pembroke Lakes Elementary. Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines meets every Thursday, 12:15pm, at Club 19 at the Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racket Club, 10500 Taft Street, in Pembroke Pines. Adults and Teens Can Find Ways to Give Back at the Volunteer Expo BY DEBBY TEICH

M

any teens and adults are looking for volunteer opportunities as a way to earn service hours for school or simply to give back to the community. At the Teen & Adult Volunteer Expo, they can connect with a wide variety of local organizations that need their help. The event will be held on April 27, from 1pm-3pm, at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library, located at 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. In the past, the event has been dedicated to teens. Over 500 students typically attend. Last year, the Expo was expanded to include opportunities for adults. “We want our customers to know how one person can make a difference,” said Nicole Kinney, South Region Event and Exhibit Coordinator. “We hope that they will find some

matches that not only pique their interest, but perhaps become a passion. For teens and adults alike, the greatest sense of satisfaction may result from something beyond the paycheck of service hours.” The Expo is like “speed dating” for volunteer work. On one day, in one place, teens and adults will be able to match their interests with various organizations. Within two hours, attendees can sample between 25-40 different organizations, both large and small. They will have an opportunity to talk to the people who manage the organization’s volunteer programs, as well as other adults or teens who have volunteered for the organization. More organizations will participate this year than in previous events, providing even more

diversity in the kinds of experiences available. Already confirmed are: Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Girls Clubs of Broward County, F.R.I.E.N.D.S Horse Rescue, Friends of Southwest Regional Library, Heartland Hospice, Friends of Literacy of Broward County Learning Services, Pembroke Pines Civil Air Patrol, Broward County Parks, and many more. The event will also include a food drive, which will benefit local food pantries. For information about the Teen & Adult Volunteer Expo, call 954-357-6733. Non-profits who want to get involved can call 954-357-6962.

First things first, it’s important to clean and declutter the area before adding a comfortable seating area. For décor purposes it’s recommended to blend the exterior with the interior by utilizing similar colors, materials, and styles; therefore, expanding a home’s living space. Including weatherappropriate pillows and rugs along with some lighting and perhaps a fire pit and/or a waterfall item will soften and create a tranquil atmosphere. After giving your patio some panache, enhance it by freshening up the landscape. Planting flowers, vegetables and herbs will add beauty, life, color, and fragrance to any patio, deck or balcony. Believe it or not many annuals need full sun and some fruit trees thrive in warm climates. But if you’re not ready to get your hands dirty just go to your local home improvement store and buy ready grown potted ones. The Bougainvillea is the queen of large flowering shrubs. The colorful year-round plant can be planted in a variety of ways such as a tree, on a vine, or in a planter making it work well in any area.

April Showers Bring May Flowers – Get Your Outdoor Space Ready for Spring! CONTINUED FROM P. 61

Pentas are one of the easiest flowers to grow in Florida. The low-maintenance blooms produce a rainbow of clusters which are irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds. Evolvulus, also called Blue Daze, always make a good choice for Florida gardens because it is drought tolerant. Mexican Heather has become a Florida garden staple with its shiny, dark green foliage accented with charming lavender-pink or white flowers. Let’s not forget Florida’s official state flower, the Coreopsis, it is one of the cheeriest plants to grow and can be enjoyed all year.

Wrap herbs in ribbon or create a special homemade infusion to bring the hostess when invited to a springtime soiree. Another favorite thing to add to the outdoor space for spring and summer entertaining are heat loving herbs like basil, tarragon, thyme, sage, and parsley. Not only are they great for recipes like gazpacho, but they make perfect garnishes and fun herb-infused vodkas too. Serve them up at all your parties or give them as gifts. With Memorial Day upon us, use some of these inspiring ideas for spending some time outdoors on those hot spring/summer nights. Regardless if you are entertaining or just relaxing under the stars, it’s easy and affordable to dress up your outdoor space.

he tension was high as Pembroke Pines “seniors” set out to prove which generation has the best spellers. Pembroke Pines Charter High School Seniors and Senior members (55 and older) of the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, 301 NW 103rd Avenue, recently competed for the title of “Spelling Bee Champion” during the 4th Annual Seniors vs Seniors Spelling Bee. Jay Shechter, Pembroke Pines Director of Community Services, and Peter Bayer, principal of Pembroke Pines Charter High School, came up with the idea for the intergenerational contest. “Bringing these two groups together allows them to learn about each other through a fun and friendly competition,” said Shechter. Both groups have been victorious in prior years.

Past winners included: student Hayley Hartwell (2016), senior Lily Mazurek (2017) and student Maia Hunter (2018). This year, there were 26 competitors. Students from the Pembroke Pines Charter High School Student Government Association were on one side of the stage with the Center’s seniors on the other side. Both groups were prepared for the event and determined to win. Senior Lilly Mazurek claimed her second championship by spelling the word “homonym” correctly. She received a certificate of recognition and a cash prize of $50. Senior Edward Riccardi won second place ($30) and student Brandon Causing won third place ($20). he City of Pembroke Pines Police Department recently honored 18 Pembroke Pines elementary school students at Pembroke Pines Police Department Headquarters during its “Student of the Month” ceremony. This is the fourth year that students have been nominated by their respective teachers based on criteria set forth by the Pembroke Pines Police Department that included exemplary behavior, good citizenship, and being a good role model. “It is so important for students to be recognized for their accomplishments and be acknowledged for what makes them stand out,” said Prenes Chevelon, CAU Coordinator. “The Pembroke Pines Police Department wants to give students the opportunity to shine and be honored during the school year.” After Pembroke Pines Police Chief Shimpeno welcomed the students and introduced the commissioners, Pembroke Pines Police Chief Shimpeno commended them for the actions that led to their nominations. Considering Removing Your Breast Implants? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. espite the evidence that breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure that results in higher patient satisfaction with their breasts and enhanced psychological wellbeing, an increasing number of women are electing to remove their breast implants. In 2017, more than 45,000 breast implant removal procedures were performed – a twenty percent increase over the previous three years. The impetus to undergo breast explantation is multi-factorial, ranging from implant related complications like implant rupture, hardening (capsular contracture) or breast pain, to large breasts with size dissatisfaction to autoimmune symptoms which patient’s attribute to their breast implants. After the implant is removed, the breast can appear empty or “deflated.” To avoid this unaesthetic result, the breast can be lifted (mastopexy) and volume can be restored with the patient’s own fat (autologous fat transfer) or by rearranging or reshaping the breast with adjacent breast tissue, a socalled augmentation. All these techniques have been shown to be successful in plastic surgical literature. When the implants are removed, patients are often pleased with the aesthetic outcome and report very high patient satisfaction rates. Additionally, in a Journal of Immunologic research in February 2017, it was noted that in numerous studies, patients with symptoms of breast pain, muscle aches, and fatigue, those symptoms were reduced once the implants and capsules were removed. In this same article, blood markers for autoimmune disease were unchanged after implant removal in the majority of patients. There is an extensive body of medical literature demonstrating that breast augmentation with both saline and silicone implants is safe without a direct link to autoimmune disease. The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is a highly personal one, and therefore treatment options should be individualized based on each person’s unique aesthetic goals. If you are considering breast augmentation, a breast implant exchange or replacement, or implant removal, it is important to discuss your goals with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

ASK THE MAYOR

Pembroke Pines Update BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS hile we may not notice too much here in South Florida, spring has sprung and it’s a great time to go outside, enjoy our parks and have fun at the many events planned around the city. This month, I have joined with other mayors to have our city participate in the Eight Annual Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. This is a friendly competition between cities across the country each spring to see which city can be the most water wise. In addition to individual reductions in water consumption, energy use and pollution, residents can save money, help their city meet conservation goals and earn a chance to win hundreds of great prizes. For complete rules, prizes and to take the pledge, please go to www.mywaterpledge. com. I urge everyone to take the pledge on behalf of the City of Pembroke Pines and share this information with your friends and family. Let’s create a legacy for ourselves and the City by reaffirming our commitment to protecting natural resources and reducing the city’s water footprint. One of the biggest and most exciting events to happen in the city is right around the corner. I hope to see everyone at our very own 59th birthday celebration, “Pines Day,” on Saturday, April 27, from noon until 6pm, at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, 601 City Center Way. There will music, food, rides, pageants, a Kids Konnection Business Expo, games and our special cake cutting ceremony. Admission and parking are free, and all are welcome. Please visit www. pinesday.com for all the event information or call our Special Events office at 954-392-2116. And, with spring comes a hopping good time for the children of our city that has become a tradition for many families. The City of Pembroke Pines Annual Egg Hunts will take place on Saturday, April 20, at two locations. More than 52,000 eggs in total will be scattered at Pines Recreation Center, located at 7400 Pines Blvd., and Pembroke Shores Park, located at 501 SW 172 Ave. Gates open at 9:30am and the egg hunts start at 10am. f you are the parents of a child with special needs, such as a mental or physical disability, you face the challenge of providing for them while you are alive, as well as seeing that they are taken care of after you are gone. The expenses of caring for a family member with special needs can be overwhelming, and ongoing medical care may not be covered by private insurance plans. State and local governments offer assistance, but it is subject to strict financial eligibility requirements. So, what can a parent of a child with special needs do (or not do) to assure adequate care throughout their lifetime, yet not disqualify them from government assistance? First, it is important that parents, grandparents and others NOT establish custodial accounts for a minor child with special needs. Why? Because once the minor child reaches adulthood, distribution from the custodial account may disqualify them from government services. A well-meaning grandparent’s act of generosity can actually do more harm than good. The same disqualification applies if a child with special needs is left assets outright or through a trust. What about leaving money to a trusted relative to be held on behalf of a beneficiary? While that sounds like a reasonable plan, the relative could lose the inheritance through their own divorce, bankruptcy, lawsuits or simply by mismanaging the assets. In addition, should the selected relative die, the inheritance becomes part of the relative’s own estate. Fortunately, the government has established rules allowing assets to be held for the benefit of an individual with special needs, in a “special needs” or “supplemental needs” trust. A special needs trust preserves government benefit eligibility, while at the same time providing assets that can meet the additional needs of the person with a disability that goes beyond provisions for the basic needs and limited medical and long-term support and services of Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These life-enhancing expenditures can include: supplemental education and training; out-of-pocket medical and dental services; transportation (including purchase and maintenance of a vehicle); travel and vacations; hobbies and recreation; purchases such as computers, electronics, and furniture; personal care aide; athletic training and completion; and special dietary needs. Most importantly, a special needs trust must be designed specifically to supplement, not replace public benefits. Funds from a special needs trust cannot be distributed directly to the disabled beneficiary. Rather, funds must be disbursed to third parties who provide goods and services for the use and enjoyment by the beneficiary. Often, supplemental needs trusts are funded with life insurance proceeds, thereby providing resources exactly when they are needed. Special needs trusts are a critical component of your estate planning if you have a child or grandchild with disabilities. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? LEGALLY SPEAKING

When Will the Court Issue Our City Media 4/19 Sudoku a “Restraining Order?” BY EVAN BARON am often questioned about the process involved in obtaining a “restraining order.” Many people believe that such an Order can be obtained if a husband and wife get into a verbal argument or if someone is harassing them. This is not true and Florida law is very specific as to the requirements needed to seek such an order. There is, in fact, really no such legal document as a “restraining order.” The Order that can be obtained is called an Injunction for Protection Against Domestic Violence. As the title suggests, this order is to protect someone from domestic violence, which is defined as any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member. The statute goes on to further explain that anyone who is either the victim of domestic violence or has reasonable cause to believe he or she is in imminent danger of becoming the victim of any act of domestic

violence has standing to seek an injunction. The basis for such an injunction therefore must be based upon either acts of violence or acts which would result in the other party having a reasonable belief that there was imminent danger of such violence. Conversely, injunctions will not be issued based upon harassment or threats which do not prove to result in imminent fear of harm. To obtain the Injunction, a sworn affidavit must be filed and presented to a judge. If the Judge feels that the evidence is sufficient, a Temporary Injunction will be issued. This will usually require the Respondent (the person who has the injunction issued against him/her) to vacate the marital residence and to have no contact, direct or indirect, with the complaining party. A hearing will then be held within 15 days, giving both parties the opportunity to present their case to a judge. At that hearing either party can be represented by an attorney. The Judge will then determine if the Injunction shall remain in effect or whether it shall be dismissed. Injunctions can remain in effect for a certain period of time or indefinitely. The Injunction can also be modified allowing minimal contact to discuss issues such as child visitation. The purpose of this Injunction is to offer protection to someone who has been the victim of domestic violence or has a reasonable fear to believe that he/she will be a victim. Unfortunately, it is sometimes abused by individuals who use it as a means to “get back” or punish their spouse. I often say that the Injunction is to be used as a shield to protect an individual and not as a sword to harm someone. The Petition seeking the Injunction is sworn to by the applicant as being true. It is unlawful to lie under oath. Nobody should allow themselves to be a victim of domestic violence. If you are, the law exists for your protection. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over the past decade. In 2018, it was estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Leonardo Oliveira, MD, sports health and running medicine specialist, to answer key questions about Leonardo Oliveira, MD running, and how runners of all types can prepare.

Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons.

Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Oliveira in Coral Springs or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida sports health specialist, call 800.597.2037 or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ SportsHealth to schedule online. For more information about Cleveland Clinic Florida Sports Health, visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ SportsHealth.

Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.
