o-It-Yourself projects often take place in shops, garages and on kitchen tables. On May 5, from 11am to 5pm, “makers” will have an opportunity to share their creativity in science, technology, engineering, art and math at South Regional Library’s 1st Annual Junior Makers Festival. The free event is for children ages 5 and up; however, the whole family is invited to attend and play. “Most ‘maker’ events are geared to adults, rather than to elementary age children,” said Nicole Kinney, South Region Event and Exhibit Coordinator. “This event gives kids a chance to build, create, and learn with both old and new technology and materials, from sand to 3-D pens.” The event is a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, as well as a celebration of the “Maker” movement. The public is invited to drop by at any time throughout the event. There will be 3-D pens, Q-Ba-Maze and kinetic sand. There will also be a variety of technology demonstrations from Broward County Library’s Creation Station, such as the Oculus Rift and the Microsoft HoloLens virtual and augmented reality systems. There will also be an Echo Dot wireless speaker, so that visitors can meet the Alexa home assistant. “Kids are natural ‘makers,’” said Kinney. “This event celebrates that with a
varied collection of things to try, demonstrations, and activities. They can try building, making, and creating with cool stuff, from basic things found at home to high-tech items.” Many of the things that are showcased at the Junior Makers Fest are already part of regular programs at the South Regional Broward County Library. “Libraries today are not just storehouses for books,” said Melissa Karnosh, Youth Services Supervisor. “They are community gathering places, with programs for all ages. We encourage everyone to come in and see what there is to do, learn, see, try – and read! – at the library.” There will always be books in the library, but customers can also find new technologies, such as the GoChips, which can be used to watch an entire season of a television series on a phone, tablet, or laptop -- or even on all three at once! There are computer classes for adults, coding classes for kids, story times for preschoolers, “Mommy and Me” sessions for babies and parents, and so much more. There are also ebooks, free music and movie downloads, and much more through the WOWbrary -- “Library WithOut Walls.” The library’s Summer Learning Program encourages kids to read, but teens and adults can also sign up to be summer readers and attend summer classes and other events. South Regional/BC Library is located at 7300 Pines Blvd. in Pembroke Pines.

lot of fun. We are happy to be a part of this event and encourage everyone to come out and play.” The Mayors’ Chess
Challenge is a free open play event that supports scholastic chess in the schools and community. Instructors are available to help participants that are new to the game. Over 100 kids typically attend the event in Pembroke Pines. Many are members of elementary, middle and high school chess clubs throughout Broward. From September to May, the challenge rotates to 19 different cities in the area. Recent challenges have been held in Miramar, Lauderdale Lakes, Wilton Manors, Hollywood and Cooper City. Kids receive a passport that gets stamped for each month they attend. Those with perfect attendance from all the challenges will receive a prize at the end of the season. The Pembroke Pines event is the last Chess Challenge for the 2017-2018 season. Last year, Young Mauro was the first participant to arrive at the Pembroke Pines Mayor’s Chess Challenge with a completed chess passport and was named “Chess King” for the day. Pembroke Pines Children and Adults Celebrate Spring BY DEBBY TEICH
K
ids and adults in Pembroke Pines celebrated the arrival of spring with several eggs-citing events. The City of Pembroke Pines hosted two egg hunts. Thousands of children searched for more than 52,000 plastic eggs hidden at Pines Recreation Center and Pembroke Shores Park. The free event also included face painting, bounce houses and a visit from Peter Rabbit. Adults also had an opportunity to celebrate spring at the Carl Schechter Southwest Focal Point Center. During the Annual Spring Bonnet Contest, they let their creativity soar by creating a one-of-a-kind bonnet to wear to the event. Several participants won awards for the Most Beautiful and Most Original bonnets. Adults also attended the Annual Spring Time Tea Event, where they spent quality time with cherished friends and met some new ones. There was an array of tea sandwiches, decadent desserts and assorted afternoon teas.

Gait Disturbances in Children BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
G
ait disturbances are one of the most common concerns of parents. Children may begin walking with their feet turned in or out, leaving parents with many questions. The problem may be coming from any level between the foot and hip. Some deformities occur at one level (i.e. foot, leg, knee, or hip), while others are more complex. Some children may “grow out of it”, while others will not. Newborns and infants are born with their legs bowed and the lower leg turned in relative to the upper leg (medial tibial torsion). This represents the fetal position of the lower limbs. With the beginning of walking the lower limbs start to straighten as normal physiologic development takes place.
Causes of Gait Disturbances:
▸▸ Genetic: Rotational problems often run in families. When parents and siblings have grown out of it, the presenting child usually will as well. ▸▸ In utero position during pregnancy may cause the foot to turn in. ▸▸ Sleeping or sitting postures may not cause the problem, but will delay the resolution. ▸▸ Compensating mechanisms for limb deformities. ▸▸ Tight muscles and ligaments at any level. ▸▸ Bone deformities in the hip, femur, knee, tibia, or feet.
Examination of the Child will include:

▸▸ Observation of the child at rest, standing, walking and running. ▸▸ Checking hip range of motion with the hip flexed and extended. ▸▸ Checking knee structure and the rotation of the tibia on the femur (lower leg bone relative to upper bone). ▸▸ Checking the position of the ankle and the leg bone to determine bone deformities. ▸▸ Observation of foot posture to check for curvatures and elevation or flattening of the arch. ▸▸ Neurological problems must be ruled out.
Treatment Plan:
▸▸ To effectively treat rotational problems, the level and severity of the deformity must be determined. ▸▸ If sleeping and sitting position perpetuate the deformity, they must be changed. ▸▸ There may be a need for casting the foot, ankle and leg (every two weeks) to put tight ligaments and muscles into a continuous stretch. This may be necessary for anywhere from two to eight weeks. ▸▸ Physical therapy to improve muscle flexibility and to provide gait training to the child. ▸▸ In shoe custom molded orthotics or gait plates to help encourage normal walking. This is especially beneficial in the flatfooted child or ones who are intoed. ▸▸ Night braces or splinting to encourage and maintain correction. ▸▸ In rare cases, surgery may be necessary if the problems persist and walking becomes difficult or if the child continues to fall or trip. In most cases, continued observation of the child may be all that is necessary.

Watchman , a new treatment to prevent stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib) TM
A new alternative to blood thinners Atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat, is among the leading causes of stroke in the United States. The WatchmanTM procedure, a new treatment option approved by the FDA, can reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib).
The Watchman procedure takes about one hour, is performed through a catheter and requires only a local anesthetic. The Watchman device is used to close the left atrial appendage where 90 to 95 percent of the clots form in patients with non-valvular AFib. The risk of the procedure is low, and patients typically go home the morning after the procedure.
Watchman, a surgical procedure which includes the implantation of a device, is good news for the millions of people affected by AFib, whose stroke risk is four to five times higher compared to the general population. Robert J. Cubeddu, MD Treatment with Watchman might prevent approximately 750,000 annual hospitalizations due to strokes related to AFib.
Currently, Watchman is the only approved interventional treatment for closure of the left atrial appendage for stroke prevention. Aside from the reduction in stroke, the major advantage of the Watchman procedure is the ability of the patient to stop taking blood thinners permanently.
Preventing the disability associated with stroke is imperative, especially since strokes caused by AFib tend to be more severe than those that are attributed to other causes. Plus, with the increase in the population of aging boomers, the number of AFib-related stroke victims is expected to rise significantly. According to Dr. Robert J. Cubeddu, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida, AFib is very common among patients over 65 years of age, and is therefore prevalent in South Florida, a retirement hub. Most patients with AFib are currently taking blood thinners also known as anticoagulants. “Blood thinners are required for a lifetime, and their use is often limited by their side-effects, and the need for regular bloodwork and strict adherence to medication protocols,” said Dr. Cubeddu. “In addition to those side-effects, several studies have suggested that up to 40 percent of patients with AFib are poor candidates for the blood thinners due to a history of internal bleeding, a diagnosis of peptic ulcer or cancer, or even a risk for falls.” In other words, many people with AFib need new treatment options.
To find out if Watchman is the right treatment for you, schedule an evaluation with Dr. Cubeddu, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/heart.

ay has always been a very busy month for us. There are many activities, events and programs offered, and we begin to really gear up for our hurricane preparedness with hurricane season right around the corner. We encourage residents and businesses throughout the city to take advantage of our educational videos and information on our social media, website, television stations, and through our newspaper City Connect regarding what to do before, during and after a storm. Knowledge is power. Hurricane Irma taught us last year that being prepared and keeping the lines of communication open and accurate is critical for all Floridians with hurricanes being so much a part of our lives. Especially take time during National Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 6 – 12, to learn more about being as prepared as possible for future hurricanes. Be sure to also mark your calendars for the Mayor’s Third Annual Chess Challenge being held on May 19, from 9am to 11am, at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club Nineteen Restaurant, located at 10500 Taft Street. This is the last chess challenge being held throughout Broward County as part of a free and friendly series of chess meetups created to draw attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in our community. Chess players of all ages and skills are welcome to play chess with me, City Commissioners, Broward County officials, community leaders and other players at this monthly traveling challenge. Instructors are on hand to help those new to the game. All across the country, including here in Pembroke Pines, children of all ages will also be celebrating the 8th Annual National Kids to Parks Day on May 19. There will be free and fun activities at several park locations throughout Pembroke Pines, from 8am to 7pm. Check our City website at www.ppines.com for information on free tennis clinics and free swimming. And, I’d also like to invite everyone to the City’s Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 28, from 9am to 11am, at the Donnith H. Fletcher Art and Culture Center, located at 7900 Johnson Street. I understand that Memorial Day may symbolize the start of summer for many; however, please remember that it really is a very special day set aside to honor all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. The Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard will present colors; and veterans, community leaders, and special guests will join together to pay tribute and take part in a wreath placing ceremony. As always, be safe and I hope you enjoy all that our great City of Pembroke Pines has to offer. Be sure to follow and “like” our social media (Pines Media on Instagram; City of Pembroke Pines on Facebook; and @City_PPines on Twitter), so you are up to date on all that is happening. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com

Moms, Give Yourself A Gift this Mother’s Day BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
M
orning sickness. weight gain. skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, causing
stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result - smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts can deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help. A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of child bearing and restore and enhance your body. In general, a mommy makeover may include: ▸▸ Breast augmentation ▸▸ Tummy tuck ▸▸ Butt lift ▸▸ Breast lift (abdominoplasty) ▸▸ Liposuction For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs, and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their mommy makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations. It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover: ▸▸ Are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate. ▸▸ Are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. ▸▸ Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and Dr. Messa has achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Estate Planning – More Than Just Documents BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.
E
state planning is not just about documents. The planning process requires a thoughtful discussion with an experienced attorney to identify areas of concern and vulnerability, followed by the design and implementation of a plan with appropriate documents to address these areas. The plan can be very simple or more complex, depending on one’s particular situation. When beginning the planning process with an attorney, there are many things to consider. It’s not just about the stuff. It’s common to assume an estate plan is about leaving an inheritance to your loved ones. Often, the focus quickly shifts from “how much” to “when” and “how.” Perhaps you have a child with a tendency to overspend. You may also fear leaving a generous inheritance to your children might discourage them from working. Have you even considered that your spouse may someday remarry, and your assets eventually pass to the new spouse’s family? A full discussion of your estate plan should address all of your concerns. It’s not just about after you are gone. What about the possibility of you or your spouse becoming disabled? Who will oversee your property or handle your business affairs? How is disability determined and by whom? The answers to these questions should be part of your plan. If you become disabled without any estate planning, the court will step in to appoint a guardian to manage your financial affairs and see to your personal and medical care.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualiications and experience.
What about doctors, insurance and government resources? Who is authorized to provide treating physicians with care instructions for an ailing loved one? Who has access to one’s health information? Who is authorized to interact with insurance companies, Social Security, Medicare and other government agencies? A comprehensive estate plan should provide for all of this. What if I do nothing? Should you die without a plan, your assets will go to your closest relatives under the state of Florida’s intestate succession laws, as determined by the probate court. The only factors involved in the distribution of assets are whether or not you have a spouse, children, living parents or other close relatives when you die. All distributions are predetermined and there is no opportunity to protect your spouse, children or other relatives from creditors, predators or their own bad habits. Moreover, if you leave minor children, their guardian will have access to your assets. Estate planning is an interactive and collective process which commences once a client meets with their trusted legal counselor. It should not simply be a “check the box” or “fill out the form” exercise. The value of estate planning is the advice and guidance received, not the documents delivered. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. Alimony and Supportive Relationships BY EVAN BARON

lthough there are several classifications of alimony in this state, such as “Bridge the Gap,” Rehabilitative and Durational, the one classification which creates the most controversy is Permanent Alimony. This classification of alimony can be required in a long-term marriage, which is defined as a marriage of 17 years or more. Permanent Alimony will terminate upon the death of either party, or the remarriage of the receiving spouse. In addition, it can be modified (increased or reduced) if there a substantial change of circumstance occurs. A substantial change of circumstance usually refers to a change in the finances of either party. If either spouse loses his or her job and a new job results in a lower income, that would be considered a substantial change of circumstance. The change, however, cannot be voluntary in nature. A person cannot quit his/her job and then ask the court for some relief due to this intentional act. Permanent Alimony can also be terminated or modified if a “supportive relationship” exists. The question is, “What exactly is a supportive relationship?” Florida Statutes do, in fact, define such a relationship, but it is certainly open to interpretation. It exists when a couple, who is not legally married, does in essence hold themselves out as a married couple. Many individuals who receive Permanent Alimony will avoid re-marriage, since it will end alimony by operation of law. The Supportive Relationship Statute was enacted to deal with couples, who are in essence married, but not by operation of law.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
The Courts are to consider the following in determining whether a supportive relationship exists: ▸▸ The extent which the couple has held themselves out as a married couple or otherwise conducted themselves in a manner that evidences a permanent supportive relationship ▸▸ The amount of time the parties have lived together ▸▸ Have the parties pooled their income or assets or otherwise exhibited financial interdependence? ▸▸ The extent that either party has supported the other ▸▸ The extent of which either party has performed valuable services for the other party ▸▸ Whether the parties have jointly contributed to the purchase of real property ▸▸ Whether the parties have an express or implied agreement concerning support or property sharing The above criteria clearly show that there is much room for interpretation by a judge. It is believed that the Florida legislature will, in fact, someday address this statute in an attempt to clarify the intent. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.
