Make A Move at the 4th Annual Mayor’s Chess Challenge World Champion, Susan Polgar. This year join Mayor Frank C. Ortis once again as he is hosting the “4th annual Mayor’s Chess Challenge” for the chess season finale on Saturday, May 18th. The free event sponsored by Memorial Healthcare System will be held at Club Nineteen at the Pembroke Lakes Golf & Tennis Center. Players of all ages and skill levels are welcome to test their skills and learn from Broward County mayors, elected officials, and community leaders who all support Scholastic Chess. First-timers will love the “ROOK”ie area. The clever play on words will have experts chuckling and newbies enjoying the “No Stress Chess” game boards, large tabletop games, and the giant floor set. Mayor Ortis is known to give pointers and share tips with the eager beginners. The initiative is a “First Move” event sponsored by the nonprofit America’s Foundation 4 Chess and began at the start of the academic school year by local mayors, elected officials, and community leaders all in an effort to support scholastic chess in the schools and in the communities. The free and friendly chess series was created to draw attention to the benefits of the classic game inside and outside of the classroom.
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he game of Chess is one of the world’s most popular games, played by millions worldwide in various settings. This classic game of the mind is played everywhere and gaining more exposure with chess clubs popping up all over. Countless studies over the years have continuously shown the same results. Chess strengthens a child’s mental clarity, fortitude, stability and overall health. It also aids in the growth of certain areas of the brain and mind. If a child learns to play at a young age, they will develop analytical, synthetic and decision-making skills of which they can transfer to real life. They will also learn the nature of competition while gaining confidence. “According to research, test scores improved by 17.3% for students regularly engaged in chess classes, compared with only 4.6% for children participating in other forms of enriched activities,” states 4-time
Throughout the past few years, the challenges have gained popularity. Those who attend will have their “Mayor’s Chess Challenge Passport” stamped, and those who have attended all challenges will receive recognition and awards. “Every year the Chess Challenge just gets bigger and bigger,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “It’s such a great program for everyone, from beginners to advanced players, and it’s really a fun day. Our city is happy to be a part of this event series, and I encourage everyone to come out and play. See you there.” The 4th Annual Mayor’s Chess Challenge will be held at Club Nineteen at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club, 10500 Taft Street from 9am-11am on May 18, 2019. State-of-the-Art Aviation Academy Comes to Pembroke Pines
A
A new multi-million-dollar Aviation Education Center opened at Hollywood North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines. Wayman Aviation Academy is the largest and longest-running flight school in South Florida. It serves students from over 70 countries for over 32 years. The school opened the doors to its new state-of-the-art expansion facility on Friday, March 22. North Perry Airport has become a strong center for flight training, recently heralded as the busiest VFR airport in the state of Florida. It is at the cross roads of Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and Hollywood Florida.
The new facility will increase the school’s capacity for students from its partners including Miami-Dade College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Liberty University and airlines. New classrooms will lead to expanded course offerings; a large seminar space for gatherings such as its recent open house for 60 Girl Scouts. It will house a new dispatch and flight line to accommodate its fleet of nearly 40 aircraft. The Wayman FAA certified testing center for pilots, mechanics, dispatchers will double to 10 seats. “We’re very proud to take the next step in the growth. Our goal is to become an Aviation Institute offering the best training and education for the new generation of aviators”, says Wayman Eddy Luy, Vice President and 2nd generation manager of the school.
The school aims to support local and international students that are responding to the worldwide shortage of pilots. Boeing and Airbus estimate a need for over 345,000 pilots over the next 20 years. However, the US only trains approximately 14,000 ATP pilots a year, half of what it needs to meet demand. This has led to rising entry level wages at the regional airlines and booming salaries for senior captains. The new facility will be next to Wayman Aviation’s existing FAA certified Part 145 aircraft repair station, and its renown pilot shop at 7501 S Airport Rd Pembroke Pines, FL. The school maintains a flight line at Miami -Opa Locka Executive Airport as well. For more information on how to become a pilot visit www.wayman.net or call 786-574-5228

Arthroscopy of the Foot and Ankle BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
F
oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized, and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough
surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery may be used to treat the following conditions: chronic join pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages of arthroscopic surgery include: faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; outpatient procedure; and quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible. Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board-Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. He specializes in the treatment of infants, children, teens and adults with injuries, pain and deformities. His associates, Doctors Messina, Cohen, DeSimone, Moya, Bertot, Shenassa, Jones and Goodner, care for all musculoskeletal injuries from head to toe. Hurricane Season is Just Around the Corner. It Is Time to Prepare
T
he 2019 Atlantic hurricane season is quickly approaching. While hurricane season gets underway June 1st and goes through November 30th, the City of Pembroke Pines is committed to providing preparation information year-round to ensure that businesses and residents receive precise and timely communication before, during and after a hurricane. National Hurricane Preparedness Week, taking place Sunday, May 19, 2019 through Saturday, May 25, 2019, is a nationwide effort to inform the public about hurricane hazards and to distribute information and share knowledge which can be used to prepare for and take action during a storm. Each day over the course of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, the National Weather Service will address a specific hurricane-related topic and share with cities to promote. The topics include: an overview of major U.S. hurricanes; hurricane hazards such as storm surge, high winds, and inland flooding; the forecast process; disaster planning/ preparation; and knowing how and when to take action. The primary goal is to make sure that every
family has a disaster plan; every business has a disaster checklist; and everyone gets out of the path of the hurricane safely. This information will be shared and accessible on the city’s social media pages. For residents of the City of Pembroke Pines, there is a comprehensive section on the city’s website at www.ppines.com/hurricane called “Pembroke Pines Prepared” where visitors will find a large assortment of resources, videos and preparation materials. There will also be continual helpful information and updates posted on all of the city’s social media handles on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter throughout the season and year, as well as during National Hurricane Preparedness Week. During an emergency, residents can obtain further information by contacting the city’s emergency hotline phone number at 954-565-9571 once it is activated. This phone number provides relevant information to citizens on topics that may include power outages, mandatory evacuations, shelter information, road closures, updated transportation schedules and discontinuation of any city functions or properties. Residents can also receive information through CodeRed and Notify Me, two key ways to get information sent via email, text or phone. Registration for these tools can be completed on the city’s website. In years past, the City of Pembroke Pines benefited greatly by having staff and many volunteers assist others in need immediately after a storm. The

relief efforts included both food and water distribution, debris clean up, donating and much more. Residents interested in volunteering after a storm hits can complete a Hurricane Relief Form on the city’s website and follow instructions to submit or email Carol Campisi, Assistant Director of Recreation and Cultural Arts at campisi@ppines.com. The community is encouraged to learn more about the City of Pembroke Pines’ latest events by subscribing to Pines Media on YouTube, reading the city’s newspaper City Connect, checking the City’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines, and accessing Twitter or Instagram using @cityofppines. Residents with Comcast can view Pembroke Pines Media programming on Channel 78, while residents with AT&T U-Verse can view programming on Channel 99 and click on Pembroke Pines TV.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Run Mayor Run! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
ayor Wayne Messam is a very visible community figure in Miramar. So visible in fact, one can usually see him running throughout the city. However, this time he’s taken running to a whole other level. Most recently, the athletic public servant announced that he will be running for President of the United States in the upcoming 2020 election. Mayor Messam views the lack of urgency to plan for the future and take action on the crises coming as the biggest threat facing our nation. Gun violence, climate change, healthcare costs and student loan debt are hot topics the former FSU wide receiver wants to tackle. The gun violence epidemic is taking far too many lives, climate change is damaging more homes and devastating more communities each year, skyrocketing healthcare costs are cutting off many Americans from the possibility of their American Dream, and crippling student loan debt is leaving people of all ages with little hope for the future. During an interview on CBS News when asked why a mayor of a city with a population of 140,000 thinks he is qualified to run for office, Messam
44 MAY 2019 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
replied, “I’ve been blessed to achieve and live the American dream. My parents immigrated to this country from Jamaica and when you compare mayors to Washington insiders, Americans see that mayors actually get the job done.” Today, Miramar ranks as one of the fastest-growing city economies in the country. Mayors are uniquely positioned to deal with national challenges because they are closest to the people. Since being involved in the City’s local politics for almost a decade, the devoted mayor has dealt with many. His accomplishments thus far include: ▸▸ Championing a living wage for workers. ▸▸ Bringing jobs back from China. ▸▸ Attracting high-paying jobs. ▸▸ Proposing and passing relief on water bills for federal workers who were impacted by
the shutdown. ▸▸ Fighting oil drilling in the Everglades. ▸▸ Declaring Miramar a safe place for immigrants. ▸▸ Suing the state to keep the city safe from gun violence. “Mayors solve big challenges every day. esides being a day of remembrance for those who served in the United States military, Memorial Day weekend is also known as the “unofficial” start of summer. In South Florida, the significant holiday is celebrated with picnics, BBQs, a trip to the beach, and perhaps a visit to the annual Ft. Lauderdale Home Design & Remodeling Show. For over four decades, Florida’s premier home design and improvement expo has been an anticipated holiday staple during the three-day weekend (May 24th-27th) at The Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center.

Moms, Give Yourself A Gift This Mother’s Day BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. orning sickness. weight gain. skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, causing stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result—smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts can deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help. A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of childbearing, and restore and enhance your body. In general, a mommy makeover may include: ▸▸ Breast augmentation ▸▸ Breast lift ▸▸ Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) ▸▸ Butt lift ▸▸ Liposuction For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs, and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their mommy makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations. It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover. Are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate. Are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection.

ASK THE MAYOR
Pembroke Pines Update BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS mile Pembroke Pines, we are the happiest city in South Florida. According to a new study by WalletHub which ranked the most “content” cities nationwide for 2019, Pembroke Pines ranked #28 out of 182 largest cities nationwide and the only municipality in South Florida to crack the top 50. I’m very happy with this outcome! Pembroke Pines has many events and activities that do make our residents and businesses happy. Please be sure to mark your calendars for the Mayor’s Third Annual Chess Challenge being held on May 18 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club Nineteen Restaurant, located at 10500 Taft Street. This is the last chess challenge being held throughout Broward County as part of a free and friendly series of chess meet-ups in 19 different cities created to draw attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in our community. Chess players of all ages and skills are welcome to play chess with me, City Commissioners, Broward County officials, community leaders and other players at this monthly traveling challenge. Instructors are on hand to help those new to the game. It’s also exciting to note that all across the country, including here in Pembroke Pines, children of all ages will also be celebrating the 9th Annual National Kids to Parks Day on May 18, 2019 with free and fun activities at several park locations. Please check our City website at www.ppines.com for information on free tennis clinics and free swimming. On a bit more serious note, we are getting nearer to Hurricane Season, and while Florida’s official hurricane season is June to November, being prepared should be a year-round activity. On Sunday, May 19, 2019 National Hurricane Preparedness Week begins and runs through Saturday, May 25, 2019. Each day during National Hurricane Preparedness Week, the National Weather Service will address a specific hurricane-related topic and share with cities to promote. This information will be shared on the city’s social media. For residents of the City of Pembroke Pines, there is a comprehensive section on the city’s website at www.ppines.com/hurricane called “Pembroke Pines Prepared” where visitors will find a wide range of resources, videos, information, and preparation materials. There will also continually be helpful information posted on the city’s social media on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter throughout the season and year, and during National Hurricane Preparedness Week. Lastly, I’d like to invite everyone to the City’s Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 27 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Donnith H. Fletcher Art and Culture Center, located at 7900 Johnson Street. I understand that Memorial Day may symbolize the start of Summer for many, however, please remember that it really is a very special day set aside to honor all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. The Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard will present colors; and veterans, community leaders, and special guests will join together to pay tribute and take part in a wreath placing ceremony.

Funding Your Trust BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.
W
hy is funding a trust so important? Once you create a revocable living trust there is one last step that should not be overlooked: funding your trust. Trust funding is the process of retitling assets to name your trust as the new owner or, in some cases, naming the trust as the primary or contingent beneficiary of your assets. Unfortunately, many people fail to follow through with funding . With some important exceptions, all of your real property, personal property and business interests should be funded to your trust. If your trust is not properly funded, your loved ones may still have to go through a probate proceeding after your death before your assets reach your trust and its beneficiaries. We own real property in more than one state. Can we put all our property into one revocable living trust? Yes, and this is one of the advantages of a revocable living trust. Without a funded trust, not only will the property you own in the state where you live be subject to probate, but the real property you own in another state will require an ancillary probate in accordance with that state’s laws. By funding both properties into your single living trust, you eliminate the need for both probate proceedings.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualiications and experience. 54 MAY 2019 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
How can I obtain help with funding my living trust? Your first resource is the attorney who drafts your estate planning documents. If necessary, your attorney can create a deed for any real estate placed into your trust, and assist in transferring non-real estate assets. Your CPA, CFP, or financial advisor can also help with completing forms to name your trust as a new owner or beneficiary. Considering the importance of funding your trust, it is wise to seek professional advice. Our trust is long and contains very personal information. Do we really have to provide a copy to a financial institution, just to fund it? A financial institution needs to know certain vital information about your trust, such as who are the trustees and the successor trustees, and what the trustee’s powers are. Your attorney should prepare for you a Certification of Trust which provides this information without disclosing the personal information in the trust. By Florida statute, any company doing business in the state must accept the Certification of Trust in lieu of the entire trust. Do we have to file a different income tax return for our trust? Assuming your trust is revocable, that is, you maintain control over it and can make changes to it until your death or legal incapacity, you will not have to file a trust income tax return while you are living. You can continue to file your single, joint or separate personal tax returns using your Social Security number as usual. Upon your death, a separate trust tax return and new tax id may be required for what will now be your irrevocable trust. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. The Gray Divorce BY EVAN BARON he Baby Boomer generation has had a huge impact on many categories of American life; from music to art to technology. Those same boomers are now impacting family law as well. Statistics have shown that the overall divorce rate over the last 20 plus years has declined. This could be because the marriage rate has decreased as well. In spite of this overall decline in divorce, the rate for those couples over 50 has doubled over the same span of time. One out of every four divorces filed within the last few years were involving couples over 50. This increase in the divorce rate of these boomers, has led to the term “Gray Divorce”. There are probably many factors which have led to this increase. As this generation increases in age, more and more people are celebrating their 50th birthday and as such the over 50 population has increased. The greater the number of people, the greater the number of divorces. There are however other factors to be considered as well. People are generally living longer, which results in potentially very long marital relationships. As people age their prospective on life sometimes changes as well. Their mortality comes into issue and couples who are not happy in their marriage, no longer wish to remain together for the later part of their lives. Some couples wait until their children are grown and have established their own lives. Parents feel that after raising their children it is now “their time” to explore and enjoy life. Unfortunately, in many instances their spouse is not who they wish to share this experience with.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
Finances are the most significant issues that accompany divorces for individuals in the later years of life. After years and years of working, owning a home and placing funds in retirement, the plans that were in the past shared, disappear with the signing of a Final Judgment granting the divorce. In Florida, equitable distribution of assets almost always results in an equal division between the parties. As a result, each will have only half of what they owned together. Expenses will increase as there will be the necessity of funding two residences. This often times leads to parents moving in with their children or taking in a roommate. In addition, because of the fact that the majority of their working years are behind them, they have less time to try and re-coup their losses. Homes, which are usually a couple’s largest asset, will often have to be sold. Monthly pension checks divided between the parties, often times resulting in a party having to continue working beyond the normal retirement age. There may be an alimony component which could cause additional financial complications. Although divorce proceedings for more mature adults can be less complicated due to the avoidance of child related issues, there are financial issues which less mature couples do not have to address. I strongly suggest that before decisions are made it would be best to discuss your concerns with an experienced family law attorney.

Brigitte Had Behavioral Challenges That Needed To Be Addressed... THERAPIES 4 KIDS WAS THERE TO IMPROVE THEM ALL.

hen Brigitte’s family relocated to South Florida, she was having difficulties in school. She was unable to provide eye contact, lacked verbal expression and was unable to tolerate others in her space. That’s when her parents reached out to Therapies 4 Kids. “In just eight months, the changes in Brigitte were amazing. Her separation anxiety has improved, she was able to work for longer periods of time independently and the group sessions at T4K took Brigitte to a whole new level where she was able to overcome social obstacles,” says Brigitte’s mom, Stephanie. “Therapies 4 Kids ABA and Speech therapists worked to design a program to tailor Brigitte’s needs. The staff provided a nurturing, non-judgmental environment where children are treated with dignity and respect. They engaged Brigitte in learning activities that held her attention. Above all, they didn’t give up on her and took the time to build a meaningful relationship with her.”
