A Little Turbulence on Your Flight?
W
e love to travel. In fact, we fly to exotic and not-so-exotic locations, both close to home and around the world, on a fairly regular basis. Despite our love of travel, Christy is not a fan of bumpy flights. For her, a little bit of turbulence will create enough anxiety to set flight attendants off for a glass or two of wine! This makes us all the more thankful for the brave men and women who routinely fly into the world’s most turbulent skies. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), along with the U.S. Air Force, maintain a fleet of aircraft known as the “hurricane hunters.” These modified warplanes routinely fly in the opposite direction of rational human beings to collect data as hurricanes approach populated areas. A typical mission keeps the aircrew off the ground for 11 hours. That is about the time it would take to fly from Miami to Moscow! Imagine the roller coaster ride these dedicated public servants are on flying through a hurricane. The aircraft used for these incredibly important missions are modified C-130 cargo planes and P-3 Orion submarine hunters. Both were chosen because of incredibly reliable service records and the fact that they are slow. Fast, high-altitude jets are not very useful for collecting atmospheric condition data; however, slow propellerdriven planes are perfect. Unless, you have motion sickness. The planes use a number of radars, instruments and “drop” devices to collect a myriad of data. These data are uploaded, in near real-time, to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Forecasts and hurricane track projections using Hurricane Hunter data are as much as 30% more accurate than just satellite and radar projections. So, the next time your flight is a little bit bumpy and the captain turns on the fasten seatbelt sign, be thankful for that Hurricane Hunter flight crew of six, flying 10,000 feet above a stormy sea in winds that would knock over an apartment building! We know we are.

I was the first physician in Broward County to perform the ClariVein® procedure and one of the first in the U.S. to offer this treatment. In short, we are very experienced at what we do. Our patients’ health and the success of the procedure are our priority.
What is Vein Disease? Vein disease is a disorder that occurs when vein valves stop functioning correctly. Normally, the vein valves keep blood moving back toward the heart. When the valves stop functioning properly, some blood will drip slowly downward, causing it to collect in the legs and ankles. Over time, this can lead to spider veins, varicose veins, phlebitis, blood clots and changes in the skin. According to studies, more than ¼ of American adults have some form of venous disease in their legs. Left untreated, you may notice more discolored veins in your legs, or your ankles becoming swollen and turning brown or blue. If you are noticing any of these symptoms, we encourage you to call our office for a consultation. Do You offer Hair Removal? Yes! In addition to being an effective tool for treating spider veins and sunspots, our GentleMax Pro® laser is incredibly effective at hair removal. Laser hair removal is one of the most convenient and long-lasting ways to eliminate unwanted hair. This machine delivers direct bursts of laser energy to the skin, passing through its uppermost layers and targeting follicles. As the follicles absorb this energy, they will rupture. After the follicle has ruptured, it is no longer able to produce hair. Over a series of treatments, all of the follicles in an area will be ruptured, halting hair growth and leaving the surface of the skin smooth and hair-free. The GentleMax Pro® laser is so quick and effective, it decreases the number of treatments patients need. Typically, between four and six sessions over a 12-month period are necessary to achieve dramatic hair loss results.
Treatment of Procedures You mentioned tattoo removal, tell us more. Tattoos can be a fun, creative way for people to express themselves. However, sometimes, people regret getting these permanent works of art – that’s why we’re proud to offer our patients access to the gold standard of laser tattoo remove technology – The PicoWay® Laser. Older tattoo removal treatments tend to cause patients extreme discomfort, are often risky for people with darker skin tones and commonly are not as effective on colorful or dark tattoos.
Before
After
PicoWay® tattoo removal can remove tattoos with a wide variety of pigments and on patients of all skin types, faster, more effectively and with less pain than traditional tattoo removal methods. Older laser treatments use concentrated laser energy delivered in a consistent beam to break up tattoo pigmentation. These treatments can be somewhat effective in breaking up tattoos but often small bits of pigmentation are left behind. The treatments can also be quite difficult for some patients to tolerate. The PicoWay® laser uses short bursts of laser energy to break up pigmentation. These short bursts are more effective and less
painful than traditional laser treatments. Can PicoWay® be used for scar removal as well? Yes, the PicoWay® laser is also quite effective at removing or reducing scars. Because the laser uses short, intense bursts of light, treatment times are significantly shorter than other laser-based scar revision procedures. Patients typically experience little to no downtime following a treatment session as well. What other procedures to you offer? We now offer the Vivace™ Microneedle treatment. This, FDA approved, minimally invasive treatment stimulates the natural production of collagen and is shown to be effective in alleviating facial wrinkles, fine lines, and tightening and toning the face, neck, hands and body. This procedure is quick, does not hurt and has virtually no recovery time. How can patients make an appointment? From the flu to chest pains – Cleveland Clinic Florida offers world-class care for all of your medical needs Know the best place to go in an emergency situation If your elderly father fell and appeared to have a broken arm, you’d most likely take him to the nearest emergency room. But what if your spouse developed an itchy leg rash overnight? Or you came down with a stomach bug? Some situations are clear-cut emergencies, while others are not. It can sometimes be tough to know the best place to go for medical help in an urgent situation. Here’s a guide:
“Our Express Care Clinics provide access to Cleveland Clinic Florida’s board-certified physicians, as well as other healthcare providers for non-life-threatening urgent medical needs,” says Frank Eidelman, MD, Director of the Center for Medical Specialties and Chairman of the Department of Allergy and Immunology at Cleveland Clinic Florida. “They are convenient and cost-effective alternatives to the emergency room where we can expertly and efficiently diagnose and treat a host of injuries and illnesses requiring urgent attention.”
Emergency Rooms Hospital emergency rooms will treat all injuries, but they are the best place to go for serious injuries or life-threatening medical situations. Some examples of reasons for which you should go to a hospital emergency room (ER) include: • Chest pain and/or shortness of breath • Stroke symptoms • Uncontrolled or excessive bleeding and wounds needing stitches • Broken bones and head injuries • Severe burns • Poisoning • Suicidal feelings • Accidents (car crashes, falls)
Should you drive to the hospital or call 911 for an ambulance? An ambulance is the quickest and safest way to go to the ER for lifethreatening injuries or illnesses. The paramedics on board can administer life-saving treatment and determine the best hospital to treat the injuries.
Cleveland Clinic Florida Expands its Emergency Services Department
Express Care Locations Serving South Florida Cleveland Clinic Florida has Express Care locations to serve you in Weston, Parkland, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington. Visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ExpressCare for more information.
Express Care Online® For some health concerns, you may see a healthcare provider live without even leaving your house by using your smartphone, tablet or computer. You may receive a diagnosis and a prescription, if appropriate. Express Care Online® may be utilized for some conditions, including the following: • Seasonal allergies; bronchitis; cold, cough and flu symptoms; sinus infections • Back strains • Rashes • Painful urination • Acute vaginitis
In October 2018, Cleveland Clinic Florida opened a new hospital tower and expanded emergency services department at its Weston medical campus at 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd. With 42 emergency bays and the addition of 50 beds and a walk-in center, the department will be able to serve an expected 70,000 patients annually with continued timely high-quality emergency care.
Express Care Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Express Care Clinics, similar to walk-in clinics, handle less serious non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries that need treatment within 24 hours (not immediately). Like ERs, they do not require an appointment, but wait times are generally shorter. And, unlike other walk-in clinics, a trip to a Cleveland Clinic Florida Express Care Clinic will cost the same as an appointment with your primary care doctor. Some conditions for which you should go to an Express Care Clinic include: • Sprains and minor injuries • Eye or sinus infections; cold, cough and flu symptoms • Minor cuts, burns, rashes and skin injuries not requiring stitches • Urinary tract and sexually transmitted infections • Insect bites and stings
Download the Cleveland Clinic Express Care Online® app to connect with a doctor. Visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ECO
Primary Care For any new health concerns that don’t require immediate attention, a primary care provider (PCP) can help. Most Cleveland Clinic Florida PCPs offer same-day appointments. In addition to helping when a medical issue arises, PCPs are partners in their patients’ day-to-day health and wellness. By knowing a patient’s overall health and personal and family medical histories, PCPs can help patients address multiple healthcare needs and navigate the healthcare system. To make an appointment with a Cleveland Clinic Florida PCP, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Appointment.

The 59th Annual Pines Day Celebration Was Out of This World BY BEVERLY PERKINS

housands of residents, friends, and guests of Pembroke Pines attended the “59th Annual Pines Day Celebration”. The six-hour event featured plenty of free family-fun activities including musical entertainment, rides and games, hourly giveaways, a cake cutting ceremony, popcorn and cotton candy, a zip line, bounce houses, a Kids Konnection Business Expo, and a Royal Court Pageant all on the plaza at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way in Pembroke Pines. The City’s birthday party included a large variety of exciting activities to follow this year’s theme, “Pembroke Pines is Out of this World.” Two indoor portable planetariums were provided by the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science and the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. Over 400 performers and dancers that entertained throughout the day giving attendees the best musical entertainment South Florida has to offer. Additionally, another highlight was the 10-foot birthday cake on display inside the City Center lobby. Those who stayed until the end enjoyed the “Party on the Plaza” cake cutting ceremony and got to indulge in the sweet and decadent treat. But many would say the most anticipated segment of the day was the “Royal Court Pageant” where a queen and princess were crowned in each age category. ASK THE EXPERT
Growing Pains In Children? BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
P
ain in the feet and legs especially at night are very common parental concerns during their children’s growth. While the term “growing pains” is often used, in over thirty years of practice I have never seen any child have pain in their feet and legs due to their growth. The pain that these children and teenagers are experiencing is due to the muscles being overused trying to give support and stability to the foot and ankle. It is also common when muscles have to work harder to counteract tight muscles, especially of the calves. These muscles
fatigue prematurely. This pain is often associated with abnormal foot and leg posture such as flat feet or feet that point to the side. These problems are made worse by running barefoot or walking in slides or sandals that are very flat. The first step in evaluating these children is to make sure that these pains they are experiencing are not associated with any other medical condition. When these problems are isolated to the feet and legs a good clinical exam is necessary to fully evaluate the lower extremity and provide a treatment plan to eliminate the pain that they are experiencing. Something as simple as wearing sandals with a little bit of a higher wedge in the back than the front will provide great benefits, especially in the home. They must avoid walking barefoot or running outside without shoes at all times. Keeping sneakers on upon arising out of bed in the morning will make a huge difference. In most cases this will significantly change the course of the pain that these children are experiencing.
If muscles are tight they need to be stretched, sometimes through home exercises, physical therapy or casting. In some cases, children’s feet are very flat or the feet point to the outside and this needs to be addressed by orthotics or some type of insole in the shoe to give them support. In some cases, the deformities that cause the pain necessitate surgical procedures. Although this is rare, sometimes it is absolutely necessary as it is the only course of action. The prognosis for these problems is excellent in almost all cases. Having seen thousands of these cases over the last thirty years, I am confident that we can take care of these problems almost immediately once we identify the primary cause.

B
roward public high schools ranked in the top 25% of Florida and national high schools according to U.S. News’ latest list - 2019 Best High Schools. Top public and charter schools on this year’s list included the William T. McFatter Technical Center in Davie, The Somerset Arts Conservatory, Cypress Bay High School and Somerset Academy Charter School and Nova High School. According to U.S. News, the 2019 Best High Schools rankings results aren’t comparable to rankings published in the past for several reasons. This year’s methodology produced a numerical ranking for 17,245 (1,081 in Florida) high schools based almost entirely on standardized test scores and the portion of students passing Advanced Placement (AP or IB) tests. Schools were analyzed and ranked based on: • The proportion of students who took and passed AP/IB exams • The proportion of seniors who took and passed multiple AP/IB exams • Math and reading proficiency, based on standardized test scores • Underserved student performance – How black, Hispanics and low-income students

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
Hurricane Season is Here – Be Prepared BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he 2019 Atlantic hurricane season started on June 1st and runs through November 30th. Early predictions are for an average to slightly-above average season in terms of activity. Experts from Colorado State University’s hurricane research team forecast 13 named storms of which five will become hurricanes and two will become major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger). For comparison, during an average hurricane season there are 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes. While the number of storms predicted this year is close to normal, the overall activity – based on the intensity of storms and their energy – is expected to be slightly below average. “This year, we think that there will be a few less tropical storms and lower numbers in hurricanes, but again, the old saying is ‘it only takes one’,” cautions AccuWeather Atlantic Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski. That being said, now is the time to start preparing your family and your home for hurricane season. The first thing you should do is put together your hurricane supply kit, stocked with all the essentials you will need to provide for your family during and following a storm. Be sure to include flashlights and lanterns with extra batteries, first
aid supplies, cash, food and water, and copies of all critical documents. You should also create a family emergency communication plan; know how to get in touch with each other, especially if phone or internet service is knocked out. Register for text and/or email alerts for emergency notifications.
Prepare your home by trimming tree branches and limbs and securing and clearing rain gutters and downspouts. Now is also the time to make sure your hurricane shutters are in proper working order. The beginning of hurricane season is also a good time to familiarize yourself with the terminology. It’s important that you understand exactly what the meteorologists and newscasters are saying and what that means. Here are some of the most common terms as defined by the National Hurricane Center: Tropical Cyclone – an organized rotating system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or subtropical waters and has a closed lowlevel circulation Tropical Storm – a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph Hurricane – a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher; a major hurricane is when winds are 111 mph or higher Hurricane Warning – hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected in an area; issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset Hurricane Watch – hurricane conditions are possible; issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset

What To Do When A Storm Approaches BY STACEY BOMSER
T
wo years ago, Hurricane Irma set her sights on South Florida. While we were fortunate and escaped the brunt of her powerful strength, that scare was enough to remind us all of how important it is to be ready for hurricane season. Here are some helpful tips on what you need to know to be prepared before, during and after a storm. As the storm approaches Start preparing your home before the storm gets near. That means covering windows and doors with hurricane shutters and bringing in outdoor furniture, garbage cans, and anything else that is not tied down and could become airborne. Charge your cell phone and back-up batteries in case you lose power. Withdraw cash from the bank, as ATM’s will not work in a power outage. Gas up your car and buy extra gas if needed to fuel generators or gas-
powered tools. Fill aluminum or plastic containers with drinking water; you need enough for one gallon per person per day for at least three days. In addition, fill pre-sanitized sinks and tubs with water for bathing and flushing toilets. Turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary; this will help keep food safe longer if the power goes out. During the storm Monitor your radio or television for weather updates and instructions from public safety officials. Also check emails and social media sources for emergency notifications. Stay inside, preferably in an interior room with no windows. If the power goes out, use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns; do not use candles or kerosene lamps during the storm. Do not go outside during the eye of the storm – it may appear calm but hurricane-force winds will resume shortly. This is NOT the time to clean-up around the house. After the hurricane Listen to local officials for updates and instructions; do not go outside until authorities say it is safe. Many

disaster-related injuries occur in the aftermath of the storm – watch out for debris and downed power lines. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock a person down and fast-moving water can sweep a car away. In addition, flood water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines. It could also hide dangerous debris. Once it is safe to walk around outside your home, photograph any damage to the structure or property to assist in filing an insurance claim. Don’t forget to check-in with family and friends to make sure everyone is safe.

What’s In Your Bag?
A
s we enter hurricane season, it’s essential that every family have a fully-stocked emergency supply kit. After a hurricane, or other emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days until aid can arrive. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends that everyone have enough food, water and necessities to last for three to five days. A basic emergency supply kit should contain one gallon of water per person per day to use for drinking and sanita-
tion. You should also have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for each person, along with a can opener. That includes baby formula and baby food. You also want to include mess kits or paper goods and plastic eating utensils. Every emergency kit should have a battery-powered or hand crank radio, preferably a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries. Flashlights and lanterns with extra batteries are also essential. Other necessities include a first aid kit, whistle to signal for help, and household cleaning supplies including garbage bags. You may need to go several days without running water, so it’s good to stock moist towelettes along with other personal hygiene items. Be sure to include a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities and make sure you

have charcoal or propane for the grill. While that’s what you need for a basic hurricane supply kit, FEMA does have a list of extra items you should consider adding. Be sure to include eyeglasses and any prescription medication you or someone in the family needs. If you have a baby, your kit should include baby care items such as disposable diapers and wipes. Don’t forget to prepare for your pet’s care as well with pet food and extra water. It’s a good idea to include sleeping bags or blankets and pillows for each member of the family. Your kit should also contain a change of clothing for
every member of the family, including sturdy shoes as there may be a lot of debris. Emergency kits should also include an extra set of car keys, cash because ATM’s and credit card devices might not work without power, and books, games, puzzles and other activities to keep entertained if there is no TV or internet. Lastly, make sure to gather all important documents in waterproof containers. This includes emergency contact numbers, insurance policies (home, auto, life, etc.), medical records, bank account numbers, etc. FEMA recommends you store items in airtight plastic bags and put the entire hurricane supply kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag. n For more tips on what to include in a hurricane supply kit visit www. ready.gov/build-a-kit.

Word! Flanagan High School Student Wins First Place in Poetry Festival BY BEVERLY PERKINS
J
oseph Callaway recently won first place in the “Louder Than a Bomb” Florida Poetry Festival. The Flanagan High School student never thought he would be the recipient of such high recognition and such an award. Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) is the largest poetry slam festival in the world, with over 120 schools and 1000 young people participating over the course of several weeks every year. Originally from Chicago, the event’s purpose is to show that “young people’s voices in unison are louder than any act of violence or hate inflicted upon them”. Poetry Slam is the competitive art of performance poetry (aka spoken word poetry). The ambitious teen never had experience performing at this level and his nerves were getting the best of him. He was used to doing poetry readings for small groups in local book stores and in school during lunch which certainly did not compare to the other talent he was surrounded by at the
extremely large competition. “Imagine you have the potential to stop a train, but you don’t know what you’re capable of until the train comes. As the sound of fear comes charging at you, you brace yourself; you close your eyes and hope not to perish from the impact. Once you open your eyes, the train is completely stopped. That’s how I felt during the Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) competition; I never knew how much potential I had until I had to walk on stage and let my words dance while the audience watched,” explained Callaway. Football legend Jason Taylor and his Jason Taylor Foundation took the Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network to the next level when he brought Louder Than a Bomb Florida, the “Super Bowl of Poetry”, to Broward County four years ago. The friendly competition for collective expression empowered and united South
Florida’s youth and community through the art of the spoken word. The ambitious joint effort has attendance constantly growing. Students in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties are able to participate in after-school poetry programs provided by these generous organizations. “This experience was amazing, but it won’t be the last. Next year will be my last year performing in the Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) competition, but my train of potential will continue to ride until the last breath in my body tells it that it can stop. You never know what you’re capable of until you buy the ticket of opportunity and take the first train to success. I might have won the competition, but I didn’t finish the battle. I’m still hungry for success, and I’m nowhere near done eating,” exclaimed Callaway.

The Value of Fat in Cosmetic Surgery BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants, is not applicable because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than
T
plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its longterm effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. Dr. Charles Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. Divorce Has Become A Generational Issue BY EVAN BARON previously wrote an article discussing the rise in “grey divorces”, which are divorces for people in their 50’ and older. Statistics have shown that from 1990 to 2015 divorce rates had doubled for people 55 to 64 and had tripled for individuals 65 and older. There are many theories as to why this increase occurred for this age group. “Baby Boomers” tended to marry at a young age and upon becoming empty nesters, realized they were no longer compatible with their spouses. Women in the work force now had the financial freedom to move on with their lives, without having to necessarily depend upon their spouse to support them. People were now living longer and so a long-term marriage took on a different meaning. However, the exact opposite is happening with Generation X and Millennials. The overall divorce rate has fallen 18 percent from 2008 to 2016. There are several theories as to why this is happening. Couples are now getting married at an older age, after they have established their careers. The cost of obtaining a college or post graduate degree also has had an impact. Two individuals with large college loans to pay back are less likely to “tie the knot” until they are earning a salary sufficient to pay their loans and start a family. Most couples in that age group that I know have decided to live together before they make their marriage commitment. Marriages later in life, has proven to result in fewer divorces. The marriage rate during that time has fallen as well. Less marriages should mean less divorces. If couples get married later in life, the chance of a marriage lasting seems to be greatly enhanced. Statistics also show that more highly educated couples who marry later in life have a greater chance of staying married.

The decline in the marriage rate explains the increase of Paternity cases that I have seen in my practice. Individuals who decide not to marry may still want to raise a family, sometimes with the expectation that having a child will result in marriage. When the relationship fails, issues concerning minor children need to be addressed. In Florida, if a child is born outside of marriage, the Father may have no rights without a court order declaring him to be the father. Once Paternity is established the father would have all the same legal rights and responsibilities that any father would have if the parents had been married. Any couple who is in a nonmarital relationship and has a child should consider the above.

What is Probate? BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
W
hen a loved one passes away his or her estate may need to go through probate administration. Probate is a court-managed process whereby assets of the deceased are collected, creditors are identified and vetted, taxes are paid, and finally, assets are distributed to family and other loved ones. While each probate is unique, most follow the following steps: ▸▸ Filing of a petition with the proper probate court in the county of the decedent’s residence ▸▸ If there is a written will, the original copy must be submitted to the court and a determination of its validity must be obtained ▸▸ Notice to Beneficiaries under the Will or Notice to Statutory Heirs (if no will exists) ▸▸ Petition to appoint executor or personal representative for the estate ▸▸ Inventory of estate assets by executor/administrator ▸▸ Publication of Notice to Creditors ▸▸ Payment of estate debt to rightful creditors after 90-day creditor period ▸▸ Sale of estate assets ▸▸ Payment of estate and income taxes, if applicable Does probate administer all property of the deceased? Certain types of assets are called “non-probate assets” and do not go through probate. Non-probate assets include: property titled as “joint tenants with right of survivorship,” or “tenants by the entireties;” retirement accounts with designated beneficiaries; life insurance policies with designated beneficiaries; bank accounts with “transfer on death” (TOD) or “In trust” designations; and property owned by a living trust. Do I get paid for serving as Personal Representative? Yes. A personal representative can file with the court for reimbursement of legitimate out-ofpocket expenses incurred in the process of management and distribution of the estate. In addition, a personal representative is entitled to statutory fees which vary based on location and the size of the estate. In Florida such fees are deemed reasonable if less than 3% of the first $1 million of probate assets. The personal representative is expected to fulfill his or her fiduciary duties on behalf of the estate with the highest degree of integrity and can be held personally liable for mismanagement of estate assets in his or her care. What does probate cost and how long does it take? The cost can vary based on the value and complexity of the estate. Common expenses of an estate include personal representative’s fees, attorney’s fees, court fees, appraisal costs and surety bonds. These costs can add up to 3 to 7% of the total estate value. Most simple estates can be settled within a year but because of staffing shortages and backlogs in the court system the process can take as long as 18 months. More complex estates may take several years to settle. Can I avoid probate? Yes. By properly retitling assets and creating a thoughtful estate plan, you should be able to avoid probate. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

Lilli Is On The Spectrum... BUT AUTISM ALSO MAKES LILLI WHO SHE IS.
L
illi is a 6-year-old girl with a variety of diagnoses ranging from autism
spectrum to hypotonia. Going through the process of improvement with a loved one can be challenging. There are days of regression, days when patients don’t want to comply and then there will be a day when the clouds clear and a ray of improvement shines down on you and your family, so it was always important for Lilli’s mom to be consistent and persistent.
“I came here because every therapy needed was offered under the same roof” stated Claudia, Lilli’s mother. “The therapists, assistants and physicians take pride in working to help improve their patient’s quality of life but also make sure that those seeking treatment are happy while under their care. When you are in a facility, you need to know there’s good practice and that people are making your child happy. Lilli is always excited to see her therapists and as a parent this shows me that T4K has the right formula.”
I
n South Florida there are countless clinics where family members and caregivers can take their loved ones to receive therapeutic services with hopes that it will improve the quality of life for their family member. It’s likely they will see improvement but very unlikely that they will be offered all the services they need
under one roof. Since 2004, Therapies 4 Kids has provided a spectrum of services for their patients with five South Florida locations. CALL NOW FOR A FREE CONSULTATION
