Don’t Let Rain Dampen Summer Fun!
S
ummer in South Florida means heat, humidity and lots of rain. According to USClimateData.com, average rainfall in Broward County almost triples during the summer months. In fact, we average almost nine inches of rain each month. Lucky for us, there are plenty of things to do when Mother Nature does not cooperate. There are museums and art galleries for every interest, from paintings by talented local artists at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines to the dynamic and bright CultureScapes at Young At Art Museum in Davie. Children universally love Fort Lauderdale’s hands-on Museum of Discovery and Science, while adults may prefer the Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection, which offers “the largest eclectic transportation collection” in the world, or the Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum, which provides a look back in automotive time. Rainy days are the perfect time to explore new interests. Try a yoga or spin class, jump around at an indoor trampoline park, or learn how to blow glass at Hollywood Hot Glass on Young Circle. The possibilities are endless. So, next time the weather puts a damper on your outdoor plans, explore all the fun and interesting indoor options available to us. Sincerely, &

Home Depot and the City of Pembroke Pines Make Improvements to Reconnect & Reenergize Village BY DEBBY TEICH
T
he City of Pembroke Pines and Home Depot Store #6852 have been big supporters of the United States Veterans. They recently combined their efforts to enhance Reconnect and Reenergize (R & R) Veterans Village in Pembroke Pines by adding some privacy. “We believe in our country and its veterans,” said Christopher Fraga, District #0085 Manager for Home Depot South Florida. “R & R Village is the right place for Home Depot to have its feet on the ground and enhance the home front for our United States Veterans.” Until now, the R & R Village has been open on four sides, with one side adjacent to University Drive (Perry Airport is located directly across the street) inside the City of Pembroke Pines Howard C. Forman Health Campus. To offer the veterans and their families some privacy, Home Depot donated over $20,000 worth of fencing and supplies. It also sent two dozen skilled employee volunteers, three of whom were veterans, who worked three back-to-back eight-hour days to build a fence. Several people attended the R & R Village appreciation recognition event to thank Home Depot Store #6852. They included: Pembroke Pines Commissioners Carl Shechter, a WWII Army Veteran, and Iris Siple; City Manager Charles F.
Dodge; County Commissioner Beam Furr; Christopher Fraga, District Manager #0085 South Florida Home Depot; and Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. “I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and appreciated the huge effort put forth by the Home Depot and the City of Pembroke Pines,” said R & R Village Army veteran Ramon Ortega. “This is what we in the Military do for other people. We are never on the receiving end of such generosity.” R & R Village was established in 2015 to provide transitional housing for Veterans getting back on their feet, but the homes actually date back to the early 1970’s and were in great need of renovation. “We were only able to make renovations as funding became available,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines, who has managed the project since its 2015 inception. “To date we have received two grants from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity to renovate the five homes. In 2015, we received $250,000 and in 2016, $100,000. The very generous $20,000 donation from Home Depot #6852 made it possible to create a true neighborhood feel and help build a sense of community for our R & R Village Veterans and their families.”

ummer is the perfect time for sweet, juicy peaches! If you have a peach recipe that gets rave reviews from family and friends, it may be worth some money. The Master Chef “Sweet as a Peach” Baking Challenge will be held on July 20, at 10am sharp, at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Senior Center Campus. There is no cost to enter, but all participants must be a member of the SWFP Community Center. Entry forms will be available at the Activities Desk and must be turned in by July 18. “This challenge gives home ‘chefs’ the chance to showcase their culinary skills and possibly win a cash prize,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor. “We can’t wait to see (and taste) the delicious creations.” The Master Chef Baking Challenge got its start in 2005, when Daniels created the Chocolate Challenge as one of the evening activities at the Valentine’s Dance. In 2012, the Chocolate Challenge was moved to the daytime, so that more members could participate. Three years ago, the event was expanded it into a Master Chef Baking Challenge, requiring other key ingredients, such as berries, pineapple and chocolate. In the upcoming Challenge, all desserts must contain fresh peaches. It can be peach pie, peach cheesecake, peach cookies, peach tarts or any other creation. All desserts must be homemade. No store bought entries are allowed. Participants must be present to win. A list of ingredients must be provided. Celebrity judges from Vicky Bakery will be judging this event. They will award prizes for the top three delightfully delicious and visually stunning desserts. All entries will be judged based on appearance, texture and overall flavor. Cash prizes include 1st ($50), 2nd ($30), and 3rd ($20). Winners will also receive bragging rights as “Master
Chef.” Once the judges have tried all of the entries, audience members will have an opportunity to sample them. “Remember to be creative,” said Daniels. “Judges are not only looking for the best tasting desserts, they are also looking for the ones that bring back the ‘sweet memories’ of summer!” Daniels says that some of her best childhood memories involved peaches. “So many of our most cherished memories in life are centered around special dishes and recipes that have been passed down through the generations,” said Daniels. “When I was a kid, we ate most of our summer family meals outdoors at a picnic table in the shade of the trees. These meals would not be complete without the sweet and juicy peach cobbler my mother would make. The juice would run down our arms and chins, and mom didn’t care because she knew it would wash off when we ran through the sprinkler! We didn’t know we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun!” Participants must be a member of the SW Focal Point Community Center, which is located at 301 NW 103rd Ave, in Pembroke Pines. It is free to join. For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www. ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services.
Seniors Tested Their Spelling Abilities BY DEBBY TEICH Spelling Bee winners were (l to r): Martha Schrier (3rd place), Owen Cooke (1st place) and Mary Stephens (2nd place).
O
nce again, the tension was high during the 7th Annual Senior Spelling Bee, hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. Cash prizes were awarded to first place, second place and third place winners. “We always advise our members to brush up on their spelling skills and begin reading the Webster’s Dictionary daily!” said Suzy Felix, Activities Coordinator of the Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus. “This is a competition like no other.” After Suzy Felix, Spelling Bee Stage Monitor and Activities Coordinator for the Center, advised the competitors of the rules, the brave seniors sat quietly on the stage. When their names were called, they proceeded to the microphone to spell randomly selected words that would make a college English professor proud. Each word was be followed by the definition and used in a sentence if necessary. The list began with level one words and increased in difficulty. Once the competition was narrowed to three contestants, it grew in intensity. The seniors listened closely as Dictionary Judge Lily Mazurek, winner of the 2016

Seniors vs. Seniors Spelling Bee and 2016 Lady Pines, pronounced each word. Owen Cooke was declared the winner of the 2017 Spelling Bee when he spelled the word “unanimous” correctly. Cooke also won in 2015, when he spelled “guillotine” correctly. Second place was awarded to Mary Stephens and third place to Martha Schrier, who was crowned 2017 Lady Pines in April. Each winner received a certificate and a cash prize: $50 (1st place), $30 (2nd place) and $20 (3rd place). “The Spelling Bee is a great mind challenging event. Standing on stage can be daunting for some, but once the contest gets going nerves are forgotten,” said Suzy Felix, Spelling Bee Host and Special Activities Coordinator at The Center. On September 12, the SWFPCC will hold the 6th Annual Spanish Bee, from 12:30pm - 2pm. All of the words will be in Spanish. The event is for Center members, 60 years and older and membership is free. Pembroke Pines Mayor Hosts 2nd Annual Chess Challenge COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
C
hess has long been regarded as a game that can have beneficial effects on learning and development, especially when it is played from a young age. Chess players of all skill levels and ages recently exercised their minds, as they compete against elected officials and one another in the 2nd Annual Mayor’s Chess Challenge, hosted by Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis at Club Nineteen at Pembroke Lakes Golf and Country Club. “Chess is a great game,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “The Mayor’s Chess Challenge promotes critical and creative thinking in our young people.” Two local mayors joined Mayor Ortis for the chess season finale. Mayor Greg Ross of Cooper City and Mayor Michael Ryan of Sunrise participated in the event along with Pembroke Pines Commissioner Jay Schwartz; School Board Member Patti Good; Principal of the Year Elaine Saef; and Lucio Garay, author of the book “Chess 4 Kids.” The Mayors’ Chess Challenge is a free program designed to bring attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in the community. The challenge is held in collaboration with the National Scholastic Chess Foundation and several other municipalities in Broward County. Each month, the challenge rotates to different cities in the area. Kids receive a passport that gets stamped for each month they attend.
This year Pembroke Pines added a “ROOK”ie section designated for first timer chess players. It was named for the chess game piece, which can move horizontally and vertically. In the ROOKie area, attendees were free to play on “NO stress chess” game boards, large tabletop games, and/or with a giant floor game set. Mayor Ortis shared a few of his favorite chess tips with beginners. Those with perfect attendance from all the challenges receive a prize at the end of the season. Young Mauro was the first participant to arrive at the 2nd Annual Pembroke Pines Mayor’s Chess Challenge with a completed chess passport and was named “Chess King” for the day. He posed with Mayor Ortis and was presented with a glass chess set. The Pembroke Pines event was the last Chess Challenge for the 2016-2017 season. For more information about the Mayor’s Chess Challenge in Pembroke Pines, please contact Tom Joyce at 954-392-2127 or email TJoyce@ppines.com.

South Regional Library Offers Walking Club COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
W
alking is one of the best things you can do for your health. It can help you lose weight, de-stress to lowering your blood pressure, reduce your risk of many chronic diseases and more. This summer, the South Regional-Broward College library launched a free walking club to make it even easier to reap the benefits. The club meets every Friday morning, from 8:30am-9:30am, through August 4. “It’s a chance for community members to get active, get to know each other, and share in meaningful discussions with new friends,” said Yrenes Guilarte, Librarian Supervisor, Adult Information Services. It is a beginner level walk at a moderate pace. All ages are welcome; however, children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The entire route is on level, paved ground. Participants walk for an hour, but if walkers get fatigued they can sit out a lap on the benches or return to the library. The walk starts in the front lobby of the library and continues across the Broward College campus to the Broward College Exercise Park, which has a pathway around the lake. The lake is open to the public and full of great views, shady trees and small animals like squirrels and ducks. The theme for this year’s Summer Learning Program is “Build a Better World,” with a subtheme of “Build a better you, build a better community, build a better Broward.” Guilarte says they came up with the idea for the walking club while brainstorming theme-related ways to better serve the community. “It is summer time and we thought it might be fun to do something outside,” said Guilarte. “We decided to take advantage of the beautiful lake near us and design
a walking route that customers could take to improve their health, while also (hopefully) making connections with their fellow community members. It is easier to get to know someone when doing a mutual activity. Our hope is that even after the program ends, our community members will continue to walk each week and interact with the friends they met through the program.” This program is only a small part of Broward County Library’s Summer Learning Program, which promotes literacy and awareness and community engagement. The library is giving away big prizes, including free flights (through a partnership with JetBlue), Miami Heat tickets, museum visits, and more. Participants must have a Broward County Library card, which is free to all Broward County residents (www. broward.org/Library/MyAccount/Pages/NewAccount. aspx). “We hope that the walking program and others like it will help the community realize that the library is a more dynamic place than they think,” said Guilarte. “In addition to traditional library programs like story times and book clubs, we also offer computer classes on subjects like Photoshop and Excel, yoga and tai chi classes, coding workshops, various crafts, film festivals, small business seminars, and much more.” South Regional Broward College Library is located at 7300 Pines Blvd. For information, visit www.broward.org/library/summer/ Pages/default.aspx or call 954-201-8848.

Pembroke Pines Residents to Celebrate July 4th COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
S
everal thousand people are expected to show their patriotic spirit as they arrive dressed in red, white and blue for the City of Pembroke Pines annual July 4th celebration. The free event includes rides, live music, food trucks, and a spectacular fireworks display. It will be held at Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds, 7400 Pines Boulevard. “We must always celebrate our nation’s independence and never forget those who fought hard to protect it,” said Patrick Green, Pembroke Pines resident and Vietnam War veteran. “My family and I wait all year to celebrate with our friends and neighbors. The fireworks show is the best in the area.” Guests can arrive as early as 6pm to begin purchasing hot dogs, hamburgers, and other fun foods from more than 15 food truck roundups. From 6pm to 8:45pm, there will be rides, games, art projects and other activities for the kids. Families can also dance all night to the sounds of the band Entourage. At 9pm, one of the best fireworks display in South Florida will begin. The beautiful light and sound extravaganza will last approximately 20 minutes. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs. Coolers, pets and personal fireworks are not permitted. “We would like to dedicate the event to all the Veterans and their families,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “We invite families to bring their blankets and chairs and honor the women and men who continue to fight for our freedom. We will celebrate our nation’s independence
and celebrate our freedom.” Although the Fourth of July is traditionally known as a fun holiday, it is also the one that typically has the most fires. Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. According to the American Red Cross, the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals, such as this one. If someone is setting fireworks off at home, the American Red Cross recommends that they follow these safety steps: ▸▸ Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging. ▸▸ Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution. ▸▸ Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection. ▸▸ Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud.” ▸▸ Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets. ▸▸ Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials. ▸▸ Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks. No pets, coolers, tents or handheld fireworks allowed. For information, call 954-435-6525 or visit www.ppines.com.

O
n Memorial Day, over 300 three hundred people, including veterans, residents, community leaders, and special guests, gathered to pay respects to those who lost their lives in the service of their country and witness the laying of the wreath at the Veterans Monument in Donnith H. Fletcher Park. The City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard began the Memorial Day Observance and Ceremony by presenting the Colors and concluded with a wreath placing ceremony. There were musical performances by the 13th Army Band of the Florida National Guard. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis introduced fellow City Commissioners who remarked on the significance of the day. The guest speaker, Pembroke Pines resident Lt. Colonel David Olson, of the United States Southern Command, spoke about the importance of duty to country and of the three Pembroke Pines residents who had served and made the ultimate sacrifice, including SPC. Donnith H. Fletcher, United States Army, for whom the Memorial Park was named. Donnith was 21 years old and the first Pembroke Pines resident killed during the Vietnam War on June 30, 1970. He received a posthumous
Purple Heart and Bronze Star. In 1971, Pembroke Pines dedicated the ball fields and park at 7900 Johnson Street to his memory. Donnith, who would have been 68 years old, was remembered with love and affection. His 83-year-old mother, Beulah Fletcher

PPTOPA Presents “In the Heights” on Stage COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
I
f you have always dreamed of seeing a Broadway show, the Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) can give you a taste of what it is like. It offers top-notch community theater at an affordable price. From July 14 - August 6, In the Heights will be on stage for 16 performances. Show times are Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2pm, at the Susan B. Katz Theatre at the River of Grass Arts Park. “We invite everyone to come see the show,” said Mina Mandel, board member. “The cast is fabulous and talented. It is an excellent value for a Broadway show!” In the Heights is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s (creator of Hamilton) first musical. It won four Tony awards, including Best Musical in 2008. The show is fueled with a Salsa and Hip-Hop infused score that combines AfricanAmerican and Latin influences to tell the story of LatinAmerican immigrants overcoming struggles to achieve the American dream in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. The PPTOPA production is directed by Geoffrey Short, with musical direction by Caryl Fantel, choreography by Cameron Jordan, and lighting design by Michael Graham. “America is a nation of immigrants,” said Short. “In 2017, this story needs to be told now more than ever. Most of the amazing story tellers seen on stage in this production are the very people this story is about. Their families’ stories are the true stories In the Heights is built on. PPTOPA audiences will be thrilled by the unique and personal pride and passion that fuels their exciting performances.” Family Night will be held on July 15, at 8pm. All tickets are $15. Fiesta Latina
(dinner and show) will be held on July 22, at 8pm. It includes an optional Latin-style dinner at 6pm. The Senior Matinee will be held on July 29 at 2pm. Senior tickets are $15. PPTOPA presents four shows annually and many of them have attracted as many as 6,000 people. With a full orchestra, as well as professional sets, backdrops and costumes, the plays are expensive to produce. The theater raises money through donations and ticket sales, which range from $19 to $30 for adults and $15 for children. While technically an “amateur” company, PPTOPA productions routinely feature some of the finest actors and actresses in South Florida. They are teachers, attorneys, doctors, business owners and others who volunteer their time to immerse themselves in something they love. Recent casts have included performers who have headlined productions at Stage Door, Curtain Call, Tamarac, and Actors Theaters. They have been on national Broadway tours, starred in Hollywood films, and written and produced their own plays. Many have been nominated and selected as recipients of South Florida’s Carbonell awards. In the Heights has some adult content. Performances are held at the Susan B. Katz Theatre, 17195 Sheridan Street, in the River of Grass Artspark. For information, to order tickets or to volunteer, call 954-437-4884, visit www.pptopa.com or send an email to info@pptopa.org.

States averages one to two hurricane landfalls each season. That means we need to be prepared. Here are some helpful tips on what you need to know to be prepared before, during and after a storm.
What to do now:
▸▸ P ut together a disaster supply kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information. ▸▸ Make a family emergency communication plan. ▸▸ Register for text or email alert systems for emergency notifications. ▸▸ Hurricane winds can cause trees and branches to fall, so trim or remove damaged trees and limbs to keep you and your property safe. Proper tree pruning also increases the likelihood that a tree can weather a storm. ▸▸ Secure loose rain gutters and downspouts and clear any clogged areas or debris to prevent water damage to your property.
What to do as the storm approaches: ▸▸ Secure your home by covering all windows with hurricane shutters or plywood. ▸▸ Bring in all outdoor furniture, garbage cans, decorations, and anything else that is not tied down and could become airborne. ▸▸ C harge your cell phone so you have a full battery in case you lose power. ▸▸ Withdraw cash from the bank. ATM’s will not work in a power outage.
weather updates and emergency instructions.
What to do during the storm:
▸▸ Monitor your radio or television
for weather updates and instructions from public safety officials. ▸▸ Stay indoors, preferably in an interior room with no windows. ▸▸ Turn off electricity at the circuit breaker if you notice leaks in the roof or windows or if there is flooding. ▸▸ Use flashlights, not candles or kerosene lamps, as your light source. ▸▸ Do not go outside during the eye of the storm. The calm is brief. Hurricane-force winds will resume shortly.
What to do after the storm: ▸▸ L isten to local officials for updates and instructions. Remain inside until authorities say it’s safe to go
E PREPARED! outside. ▸▸ Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and fast-moving water can sweep a vehicle away. In addition, flood water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines and may hide dangerous debris or places where the ground is washed away. ▸▸ Photograph the damage to your property to assist in filing an insurance claim. ▸▸ C heck-in with family and friends by texting or using social media to make sure everyone is safe.
WHAT’S IN YOUR KIT? It is essential that everyone have a well-stocked hurricane supply kit. It should contain enough supplies to sustain you and your family members for three to five days. Here is a basic list of what should be included in every emergency kit: ▸▸ Water -- at least one gallon per person per day
▸▸ Non-perishable food ▸▸ Non-electric can opener ▸▸ F lashlight, battery-powered radio and extra batteries ▸▸ Fully charged mobile phone with charger ▸▸ P rescription medications, enough for a month ▸▸ B aby care items including formula, baby food, disposable diapers and wipes ▸▸ First-aid kit ▸▸ Personal hygiene items ▸▸ Household cleaning supplies ▸▸ Tools ▸▸ E xtra pair of glasses ▸▸ Pet care items, including food ▸▸ E xtra set of car keys ▸▸ C ash – ATM’s and credit card devices might not be working ▸▸ I mportant documents in a waterproof container including emergency contact numbers, insurance policies (auto, home, life, etc.), medical records, bank account numbers ▸▸ C harcoal or gas grill ▸▸ Paper goods and plastic eating utensils
WHERE DO I GO? If you live in a coastal or low-lying area, you may need to evacuate to an emergency shelter if a hurricane is approaching. Emergency shelters provide a refuge of last resort for those individuals who need to evacuate and are unable to make their own evacuation and sheltering arrangements, such as with friends, family, or in hotels outside of the evacuation zones. The American Red Cross operates the following shelters at area schools: Broward County Plantation Elementary, 651 NW 42nd Avenue, Plantation Falcon Cove Middle, 4251 Bonaventure Boulevard, Weston Silver Trail Middle, 18300 Sheridan Street, Southwest Ranches West Broward High, 500 NW 209th Avenue, Pembroke Pines New Renaissance Middle, 10701 Miramar Boulevard, Miramar Everglades High, 17100 SW 52nd Avenue, Miramar
Watkins Elementary, 3250 SW 52nd Avenue, Pembroke Park Park Lakes Elementary, 3925 N State Road 7, Lauderdale Lakes Millennium Middle, NW 94th Avenue, Tamarac – This is Broward County’s only pet-friendly shelter. Call the Humane Society at 954-266-6871 to pre-register.

Under the leadership of Coach Willis, they went undefeated throughout the regular season with a record of 12-0. They are currently ranked #6 in Florida High School Football. hen students at Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School – FSU visit Studio 18 in the Pines, they now have a better understanding of what it takes to become a professional artist. They recently took a field trip to Studio 18, as part of KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work). “This program engages students to think deeply about their future,” said teacher Rebecca Torouno, whose fifth grade class has been participating in the program. “It opens up a window of opportunity for students to view future occupations as something to begin preparing for now, academically, so that they can be

successful and productive citizens in the future. “ KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. “We teach ‘real world’ lessons and discuss how those lessons intertwine with their present educational experiences,” said KAPOW volunteer Holly Bonkowski, Division Director of Cultural Arts for the City of Pembroke Pines.
Throughout the school year, Bonkowski met with students in Torouno’s class to teach them about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. They used hands-on fun activities to involve the children and keep them interested. For the last lesson, the students took a field trip to Studio 18 in the Pines to see where she works. Bonkowski began by explaining that Studio 18 in the Pines is a community engaging workspace where resi-

dent artists can create and display their work. It also has exhibitions from outside artists in the community. Next, the students met resident artists, toured the facility, viewed some artwork, and created a masterpiece to take with them.
“The visit engaged the children in the space and got them acquainted with my job responsibilities,” said Bonkowski. “They were able to see the importance of cultural experiences and interact with professionals in the cultural field. KAPOW is a great way to give back to the kids in the community and empower them to reach their goals.” KAPOW is always looking for businesses or individual volunteers interested in participating in the program. “Volunteers have the ability to change a young person’s life forever in only seven hours,” said John Casbarro, who coordinates KAPOW in South Florida. Panther Run Principal Gets Taped
SCHOOL NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
E
laine L. Saef, principal of Panther Run Elementary School, has gone to great lengths to teach her students the importance of helping others. After her students met a fundraising goal for the American Heart Association, she added being duct taped to a wall to the list. “My students, staff and community learn and believe that helping others makes a difference,” said Saef. “A small act of kindness can mean a huge thing to someone else. We bring kindness to the world to make it better. That is my culture, PIF–WIAMAD (Pay It Forward & Who I AM Makes A Difference).” Over the past 10 years, students have raised approximately $20,000 for Autism, MDA, and Down Syndrome. They have brought in gently used and new shoes for Kicks for Kids and were the number one school in Broward County with the most shoes; participated in Paw It Forward for the Humane Society; donated towels, blankets, sheets, pet toys & food & treats to the Humane Society of Broward; and more. They also help their sister school, West Hollywood Elementary, with school supplies, clothing, books (for enjoyment) and other items. This year, they added the American Heart Association. Panther Run is a Heart Association Fit Friendly School and participates in Jump Rope for Heart every year. Saef challenged her students to raise money for the American Heart Association on Jump Rope for Heart Day. For a $10 donation, they got one piece of duct tape to use to stick her to the wall. For $100, everyone in the family got a piece. The school raised over $7,000. On the day of the taping, the entire school met in the cafeteria to watch. Staff, PTA and parents were also invited to participate. “They loved it and so did I,” said Saef. “It was a blast! It was very cool to have the kids come up and stick tape to you and make you stick to the wall.”

The only survivor swam to another vessel. The other two boaters did not know how to swim. We live surrounded by water. For most of my life, I did not know how to swim. I do now. I urge everyone to please make swimming lessons a priority in their lives. This was a boating tragedy. With more people hitting the waterways during the summer months, please be cautious. Take the necessary steps to remain safe. Registration for swim lessons can be made at the City of Pembroke Pines Towngate Park, 901 N.W. 155 Avenue, any Monday through Thursday, beginning at noon through 4:30pm, and on Fridays, from noon to 7pm. Lessons are offered for children age one through adults. Swimming lessons are held in two-week sessions, Monday through Thursday, with the last session being held on August 21. Lessons are taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors (WSI) and are offered at three Pembroke Pines locations: Pembroke Lakes Pool, 10500 Taft Street, Price Park Pool, 901 NW 208 Avenue and Towngate Pool, 901, N.W. 155 Avenue. For more information about swimming lessons, please call 954-450-6895.

The summer months are the perfect time for grilling outdoors. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department offers some tips to keep everyone safe as they grill this season. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department provides additional safety tips on the city’s website at www.ppines.com. ▸▸ Never grill indoors – not in the house, camper, tent, or any enclosed area. ▸▸ Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use, and make sure everyone, including the pets, stays away from the grill. ▸▸ Keep the grill out in the open, at least 10 feet away from the house, deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire. ▸▸ Grills, both charcoal and gas, should not be used underneath wooden overhangs, as the fire could flare up into the structure above. ▸▸ Keep the chef safe by using the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill. ▸▸ Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited. ▸▸ Be ready to close the lid and turn off the grill to cut off the fuel if necessary. ▸▸ Keep a fireproof pan under the grill to catch any falling ash or grease. ▸▸ Trim excess fat from meat to avoid flare-ups. We also invite everyone to celebrate the 4th of July with us at the Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds, located at 7400 Pines Blvd. The festivities will be from 6pm to 9pm. The spectacular fireworks show will begin at 9pm. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Wishing you a very safe and fun summer!

f you haven’t been house hunting lately, ask someone who has. South Florida home prices have gradually increased the last few years, leaving a sense of doubt about housing affordability. The median price for existing single family homes in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties recently hit $320,000. Interesting to note, the median price of a home in Broward County has soared by approximately 70 percent since 2012. With the prices of homes almost back to their pre-2005 levels in most instances, prices of homes are quickly outpacing wage growth. South Florida’s median household income is $49,426, up $2,930 or 6.30% since 2012. What does this equate to in regards to homeownership? In general, as a “rule of thumb,” a family having minimal debt, a respectable credit score and a household income of $49,000 would, in most cases, qualify for a mortgage loan of somewhere in the vicinity of $196,000.

When you do the math, this means that a family earning the median income that wants to purchase a median priced home in South Florida would need a minimum of $124,000 as their down payment in order to qualify for a mortgage of $196,000. Although you can purchase a home with a 3.5% down payment with an FHA (Federal Housing Administration) loan, in this scenario, the homebuyer(s) would have to have an average income of approximately $78,000 to purchase at $320,000. With home prices at its current levels and wages lagging, it could take our younger generation 12 to 15 years to save enough money for a 20 percent down payment on a home. Added to this, the tight housing market has also driven up the price of rentals, making saving even more difficult. Purchasing power is also weakening as the Federal Reserve recently raised rates for the third time in the past seven months (the fifth rate hike since December 2015) in response to an “improved” economy. Although the Fed rate is not the same as the mortgage interest rate that homebuyers pay when they take out a home loan, the upward movement of the Fed rate puts pressure on mortgage interest rates. Mortgage rates still remain at a historic low, as the most recent numbers from Freddie Mac has the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage hovering around 3.89 percent. For every 1.0% increase in the mortgage rate, it decreases the amount of house one can afford by 10.0% Honestly, this editorial is certainly heartbreaking for want to be buyers as they’re going to have to save a lot more in a lesser period of time in order to be able to enter the real estate market than they would have in the past. The longer they sit out of the market, the higher the real estate prices will be. Home prices in South Florida will eventually level off, but they’re surely not about to fall! On the brighter side of the “coin,” let’s be thankful that we’re not looking to purchase a home in some of the least affordable housing markets in the country, such as Brooklyn or Manhattan, New York or San Francisco, California. Divorce? How Much Is This Going to Cost? BY MAYLEIDYS PORRASPITA, ESQUIRE
Y
ou have just been told by your spouse that they want a divorce or, worse yet, you have just been served with divorce papers. What to do next? How much is this going to cost? Is all the money saved going to vanish in attorney fees and litigation? You’ve heard of amicable divorces that are resolved at mediation, but what does that mean? You are concerned. What can you expect? Are you better off settling? Will you be forced to make a decision? What is mediation? Mediation is a face-to-face negotiation between the two spouses with the assistance of a neutral third party called the Mediator. The Mediator does not represent either party and the expense of the Mediator’s fees is usually shared equally by the parties. The Mediator has “no dog in the fight” and does not favor one side or the other. The Mediator’s job is to discuss the concerns each side has regarding the distribution of assets and particularly the arrangement with regards to the children.
At the start of the mediation, both sides will have an opportunity to tell their side of the story. Each party indicates what they are looking to get in the dissolution of the marriage and make the case as to why it is the fair or equitable outcome. It is the Mediator’s job to tell each side the downfalls of their case and attempt to bring the parties to an agreement that they can both live with. In family law cases, mediation is required in each and every case in an effort to allow the parties an opportunity to resolve the dispute without the necessity of involving the Court. However, the mandatory mediation through the court often occurs after a significant amount of discovery happened and significant money has been spent on attorney fees. More and more, the parties are opting to attend Mediation and attempt to resolve any disagreements before involving attorneys in an effort to reduce the amount of money spent on the divorce. Mediation can occur at any time. In divorce cases, usually the earlier the better. Parties can attend mediation with or without attorneys and before ever filing for divorce. Parties often attempt Mediation before hiring attorneys in order to lower costs. At Mediation, there is no requirement to settle and the Mediator cannot make any decisions on your behalf. If you are not comfortable with what is being offered or asked for, each party is free to leave and file suit and/or seek legal representation. Parties often find that mediating early allows them to discuss in a neutral environment the time-sharing of the children, living arrangements, division of debts, and money matters like alimony and child support. The Mediator is also able to assist in preparing the calculations based on the Florida Child Support Guidelines forms and if settled will prepare a settlement agreement that is filed with the Court. May Porraspita is an attorney and Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Law and County Court Mediator. The Law Offices of Mayleidys Porraspita, P.A. are located in Pembroke Pines. If you have any questions regarding the matter discussed in the article above or any other questions or concern, call the office at 800-492-5455. Hablamos Español.

f any of you have been involved in litigation, no matter the area of the law; you already know that it can be extremely costly. Unfortunately, that is just the reality of litigation. In most instances, the longer it takes to reach a final resolution, the more costly it will be. As they say, “time is money.” Now imagine that you also must pay the fees and costs for your opposition. You could be responsible for double the fees. You may ask, “How is this possible?” In most areas of the law, it is not possible. In family law, however, it is a very real possibility. Florida Statutes states: “The Court may from time to time, after considering the financial Resources of both parties, order a party to pay a reasonable amount for attorney’s fees, suit money, and the cost to the other party of maintaining or defending any proceeding under this chapter, including enforcement and modification proceedings and appeals”. This statute was created to insure that both parties could be represented by counsel, even if one of the parties does not have the financial ability to retain counsel on their own. The primary purpose was to protect “stay at home” wives who were not working outside of the home and may not have had the ability to retain an attorney to represent them in their divorce. This would “level the playing field” and allow representation for both parties. The determination of whether fees could be awarded is based upon the concept of need and ability. The receiving spouse must illustrate a need for these fees and the court must find an ability to pay by the spouse who is being asked to pay. Of course, the court cannot prevent the “paying spouse” form having funds to continue with his/her representation. Although I previously indicated that this law was originally passed to protect “stay at home” wives, things have changed in the work force. The law is gender neutral and as such a wife could be ordered to contribute to her Husband’s fees if in fact she is the one with the ability and he is the one with the need. I can tell you from experience that the payment of attorney’s fees is an area which causes the most obstacles to a settlement. In some instances, a Marital Settlement Agreement can have a “prevailing party” clause. This states that if there is a “post judgment” (divorce already finalized) issue which must be litigated (contempt or modification), the prevailing party is entitled to payment of fees by the other party. This is strictly based upon an agreement of the parties and need and ability is not the issue. If a motion is filed to enforce terms of an agreement, the party who is successful will be entitled to reasonable fees. One issue which is considered in either case is whether the requested fees are reasonable. No matter what the scenario, fees must be considered reasonable by the requesting party. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

P
rospective patients often ask, “Who should I go to for my cosmetic surgery procedure?” This question, if answered correctly, can make the difference between a beautiful result and a disastrous complication. All too often in South Florida, patients will choose their cosmetic surgeon based on price. This is the biggest mistake most people make. The first question a prospective patient should be asking is whether their doctor is board certified in Plastic Surgery. Many doctors are board certified, but don’t always state which field of medicine they are certified in. You should trust your care for cosmetic surgery only to a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association to certify physicians in over 24 medical specialties. The easiest way to check a doctor’s credentials is to go to www.abms.org to determine which medical specialty they are board certified in. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is not a recognized board by the ABMS. Equally important is that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These societies require not only board certification, but also documented experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients should also know how much experience a surgeon has in the procedure you are requesting. If you are interested in a breast augmentation, ask your doctor how many he or she does a week, a year. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to do the same procedure? Many physicians who perform liposuction in office facilities don’t have hospital privileges to do these procedures. Hospitals will only grant operative privileges to physicians with well-documented training in that procedure. The procedure should be performed in an accredited facility like our office, which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilites, Inc. (AAAASF) or a licensed accredited hospital or outpatient surgery center. A common misconception is that office surgery is not as safe as hospital surgery. This is not true. The safety of a procedure is dependent on the credentials of the surgeon, accreditation of the facility, and the presence of a board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist. Many surgeons will tell prospective patients that they only perform surgery in a hospital setting because it is safer. These surgeons usually don’t have an office that is properly equipped or certified for outpatient surgery. I, like many other experienced board certified plastic surgeons, offer patients a choice to have surgery in our certified private office facility or the hospital depending on the overall medical conditions and the procedure being performed. Finally, do not assume the physician has all the appropriate credentials and level of expertise. I stress the patient choose a surgeon with whom you feel most comfortable, who has a kind, attentive staff, in an environment where you can get the best care. Ask for patient referrals and patient testimonials. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. evelopmental Flatfoot is one of the most common conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it, and there IS cause for some concern. Flatfeet are a genetic problem. Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. Congenital bone abnormalities as well as trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch can cause flattening of the arch and foot. A common cause of developmental flatfoot is tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the severe foot deformity. Symptoms include young children constantly preferring to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. Leg pain, especially at night, and premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers, may be experienced. Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity is common. Occasionally, this is associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain. Signs include lowering or complete collapse of the arch. The front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. KnockKnees is common which exasperates the deformity. The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination when the patient is standing. The child can be overweight and lacks athletic ability. General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children is common. Abnormal shoe wear, as well as a child or teenager that does not run correctly, occurs due to the deformity Treatment begins with a complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). Physical therapy may be prescribed to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. Occasional immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles with a walking cast is necessary to decrease the deforming force of the calf muscle on the flatfoot. Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position may be recommended. In most cases, this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. The appropriate treatment plan can be a life-changing experience for the child. Prognosis is excellent, especially with timely management of the problem. Nathan D. Vela, DPM, MPH, is Board Certified in Foot Surgery and Reconstructive Rearfoot & Ankle Surgery, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a foot and ankle surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. ho would like to live to be 100 years old? Who would like to live to be 100, but have to endure pain for the last 30 years of their life or have Alzheimer’s for the last 20? That’s exactly what “wellness before medicine “is all about. Life should not be that complicated. In fact, it’s all about oxygen, water and food. Luckily for most of us in the United States, we have plenty of all three. Unfortunately, these three elements are not as pure as they just to be. What we do with any of these three elements (especially food) during the years of our life will result in health or illness. When all three of these elements are properly selected and utilized, the innate healing mechanism of our body can properly work. On the contrary, improper use of any or all three elements will alter the regenerative processes so that the body can no longer keep itself healthy. Air pollution, toxins, contaminated waters, animal food manipulated with the use of synthetic hormones and antibiotics, and plant food altered with chemicals and pesticides are just a few ways to start damaging our health.

Different Stages of Our Lives
As a norm, years of wellbeing precede any disease. During those years, an inflammatory process builds up in the body and starts manifesting itself with the earliest symptoms of what I call “Malaise Lifestyle.” These early changes can be felt as body aches and pains, fatigue, tiredness, memory loss, anxiety, depression, low libido, weight gain, pre-diabetes, stress, and food intolerance. Lifestyle malaise can affect all aspects of a person’s health including: physical, mental, emotional, environmental, and social. If this initial alteration of our body’s innate healing mechanism is left untreated because the symptoms don’t fit the parameters of any specific disease, we totally miss the unique opportunity to prevent a majority of illnesses that can become “incurable” once we are in the late adulthood. Diseases like Alzheimer’s, osteoarthritis, diabetes, obesity, heart attacks, breast cancer and most autoimmune medical conditions are all preventable if we were to treat all the common initial symptoms of this “lifestyle malaise” that hammers our bodies during our adulthood and before the disease takes its course.
Precise Wellness Medicine
WellnessPlus was founded on the following principle: “Your health today is a result of the experiences, exposures, and lifestyle habits that you have acquired during your life.” Your health requires commitment and can be positively influenced and rejuvenated by taking the necessary steps to embrace lifestyle changes and create a health style that meets the needs of you and your family. We do believe and understand that there are numerous influences that affect your health including: genetics, diet/food intolerances, medication/drug history, environment/detoxification, stress/chronic and acute, potential disease history, exercise, and essential nutrient status. These influences and others all take part in shaping your metabolism and how you feel today. Only you have the power to change the destiny of your health, vitality and how gracefully you will age. LEGALLY SPEAKING
The Benefits of a Revocable Living Trust BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
L
ong gone are the days when trusts were only for the rich and famous. Why? Because creating a revocable living trust is less about estate tax and more about avoiding unnecessary costs of probate and asset transfer, and creating protections for your loved ones. A properly drafted and funded trust can also deliver an inheritance with valuable creditor and predator protections. The following scenarios may help understand the benefits of a trust and why including one in your estate plan is worth considering. Meet our hypothetical family, George and Jenny. They have been happily married for 25 years and have three children - Jessica, age 20; Josh, age 15; and Jonathan, age 12. Both George and Jenny have created wills, leaving everything to each other. After they are both gone, their wills leave it all to their children. Sounds like a logical estate plan? Maybe not.
Tragically, George dies suddenly and, according to his will, all of his property transfers to Jenny. The following year, while rushing to an appointment on a rainy morning, Jenny loses control of her car and rear ends a bus full of trial lawyers heading to the annual “I’ll See You in Court!” Convention in Fort Lauderdale. Several attorneys are injured and predictably lawsuits follow. Now what happens to Jenny’s inheritance from George? It’s likely all gone to creditors. What is left to raise her children? Perhaps nothing. If George and Jenny had used a trust in their estate plan, the final outcome may have been different. While Jenny’s property would still be subject to creditor claims, her inheritance from George inside a trust would be safe for her and their children. In another sad scenario, imagine Jenny dies first. George later remarries Susan, a woman with four adult children from several marriages. What happens when George passes? His property, including what he inherited from Jenny, may go to Susan and eventually to Susan’s family. George and Jenny’s children could be completely disinherited! With a properly drawn trust, George and Jenny can rest assured that even if the surviving spouse remarries, their money will go to their children. Finally, think of George and Jenny happily enjoying retirement, but unfortunately not too fond of their daughter’s husband, Robert. Jenny fears that their son-in-law will never earn a decent living, and may be dependent on their daughter to support him for the rest of his life. George worries that if they leave an inheritance to their daughter and she ultimately divorces Robert, a substantial portion of her inheritance could be lost to her “no good husband.” If assets are left to their children in a trust, it will not be commingled with marital property. Therefore, in the event of a divorce, an heir’s inheritance will not be the subject of division and distribution. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. Santina Brothers took a copy of Our City Pembroke Pines to Port Maitland in Ontario, Canada. She went with her husband to visit his mom. Port Maitland is a small community with a population of approximately 100 people. It was once a thriving commercial fishing village. It is the home of the former Maitland Arms Hotel, a thriving rock n’ roll venue from the late 1960s to mid 1970s.
