There’s Much to Celebrate on July 4th
W
e celebrate the United States’ independence from England each year on July 4th. In 1776, the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, declaring the 13 colonies were no longer subject to British rule. While U.S. independence is clearly the most significant historical event on July 4th, interestingly, several other important events have taken place on this particular day. On July 4th, 1827, the State of New York abolished slavery. At one time, New York had the second largest slave population among the colonies. This legal act eventually led to the abolishment of slavery throughout the country and, in part, the Civil War. On July 4th, 1997, NASA’s Pathfinder landed on the surface of Mars. The landing and subsequent scientific mission were watched by people around the world, including by a young South African named Elon Musk and a Seattle book seller named Jeff Bezos. Those two would eventually go on to found SpaceX and Blue Origin, the world’s first privately funded space exploration companies, among other notable businesses. On July 4th, 1939, New York Yankees’ first baseman Lou Gehrig shocked the world by announcing his retirement from baseball and the fact that he was suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Despite his horrible diagnosis, he captured the hearts of America by claiming that he was the “luckiest man on the face of the earth.” On July 4th, 1918, the Bolsheviks killed Russia’s Tsar and his family. In 1845, Henry David Thoreau moved into a log cabin at Walden pond. In 1803, Thomas Jefferson announced the signing of the Louisiana Purchase, the first step on America’s path to becoming a global Super-Power. And in 1976, Israeli commandos executed the most daring raid in military history, rescuing over 100 hostages in Entebbe, Uganda. Coincidentally, the United States is not the only nation to celebrate its independence on July 4th;so does the Philippines. This year, as you enjoy a traditional 4th of July barbecue followed by a patriotic fireworks show, think of all the other historical events that this day marks.

A closing is the final step in executing a real estate transaction and can be quite overwhelming and confusing at times. There are many choices available on the market when it comes to handling real estate title insurance. Most companies give their clients a file number creating a tiresome, mechanical, and sometimes challenging process. However, Spirit Escrow & Title ® make long-term relationships a priority. They handle each individual case with a personal touch giving them numerous accolades and reviews from their clients. They take pride in their ability to make the process pleasant and memorable with their experienced, multi-lingual, and friendly staff. Plus, they always answer the phone and are happy to guide their clients throughout the entire real estate closing process. Owner/President Brad P. Scobey took some time to share more about his business. What differentiates Spirit Escrow & Title ® from the competition? Combined, we have over 100 years of experience. But we have chosen to remain small so that we can give clients the personal attention from
start to finish during their real estate closing process. Their most important investment deserves the utmost attention, and our desire is not to be an overgrown title company where clients are anonymous. All of our staff members have worked at large scale title insurance “mills” or high-pressure companies where making money, not long-term relationships were the top priority. What services do you offer? We handle all Closings and Refinances, 1031 Tax-Deferred Exchanges, Short-Sale Closings, Owner’s & Encumbrance Report, Courtesy Closings, Deposit Escrow, Reverse Mortgage Closings, and we also excel at Mail-
Away Closings. What new website features do you offer? We provide a secure site for clients to view and monitor their real estate transactions. Our online forms are also accessible to order a title today. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? What I learned over the years was that getting bigger did not result in being better. When I opened Spirit Title & Escrow, Inc. ® in 2002, I set out to do things differently than what I had experienced at most other law firms and title companies. I am committed to remaining small in order to provide our clients the attention to detail they deserve and to not put undue stress on the staff. I feel that this combination results in better service and a much more pleasant surrounding for your transaction. I believe that hard work and good results will speak for themselves. Through continuing education, we stay on top of current market trends and laws to be compliant with all federal regulations. We are proud to have received “The Angie’s List Super Service Award” for 8 years straight! Spirit Title & Escrow, Inc. ® is located at 9000 Sheridan Street, Suite #140, Pembroke Pines, 33024. Mahalo – Much Gratitude to Panther Run Elementary BY BEVERLY PERKINS
The Panthers raised more than $5,000 through the “Kids for Wish Kids” program which was enough to underwrite the cost of Charlotte’s Hawaiian dream. The average cost of a wish in southeast Florida is $5,000 with the most popular being a visit to Walt Disney World ® followed by domestic/international travel, cruises, shopping sprees, and meeting a celebrity. Typically, there are five types of wish requests: “I wish to be” (something), “I wish to meet” (someone), “I wish to go” (somewhere), “I wish to have” (something), and “I wish to give” (something). MakeA-Wish ® Southern Florida has granted more than 12,000 life-changing wishes since 1983 for children who have critical illnesses. The non-profit organization aims to grant a wish for every medically eligible child in its territory Principal Elaine Saef and Assistant Principal Shannon Chacona also revealed their pink and bluedyed hair - a promise they made to the students if they met their fundraising goal. The students then wrapped them in pink and blue toilet paper to add to the festivities.

S
tudents at Panther Run Elementary School said, “Aloha” to their special guest visitor Charlotte Nathanson in a school assembly in late May. The third-grade student has been battling with leukemia and thought she was invited to the Pembroke Pines school to give a speech about her experience with cancer and to tell what she’s wished for from Make-AWish ® Southern Florida. However, what Charlotte did not know was that she would be speechless. More than 600 students, faculty, administration, and local dignitaries gathered in the school’s Hawaiian-themed cafeteria/auditorium donning leis to greet Charlotte and her family. Once everyone was gathered together the elaborate surprise was revealed. These young philanthropists had fundraised all year long to grant the brave eight-year-old Plantation resident her wish to learn to surf in Hawaii. “Charlotte was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia last fall and it always has been her dream to learn to surf in Hawaii. She’s an adventurous child, loves to swim, and take on new challenges, so I think she sees Hawaii as the quintessential place to learn how to surf,” stated Charlotte’s mother Natalie Nathanson.
“The wishes we grant aren’t just nice, they’re necessary. Research shows the anticipation of a wish and memories made during them can have a positive and significant impact on the health and well-being of the children, families, and extended networks we reach,” explained Sherri Gutierrez, a member of Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida’s Board of Directors and the mother of Max Gutierrez, the 5th grader who brought the “Kids for Wish Kids” initiative to Panther Run Elementary. A Pretty Big Deal – Funds Raised for Relay for Life BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he monumental event, and the single largest non-profit event in the world is “Relay for Life”, and The City of Pembroke Pines did not hesitate to join the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser. Many communities all over the globe gather with one common goal: to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and to raise funds to find a cure for cancer. From races and walks to bake sales and car washes, there were many opportunities for passionate philanthropic individuals to do their part. But, the City of Pembroke Pines created their own event called “Can We Make a Deal”. The unique fundraiser was a spinoff of the hit television game show “Deal or No Deal”. Although Howie Mandell was not hosting, Pembroke Pines very own Mayor Ortis took center stage at the River of Grass Theater. Tickets were sold and then raffled to determine who would be the lucky three contestants to play the popular game with the object to obtain the highest point value. The select few were then allowed to have two support members on stage to provide guidance.
Each game is played with 26 cases containing point values ranging from 1 to 5,000 points. Contestants select a case to keep and open to reveal the points inside. In each round, a pre-determined number of cases is opened. The Banker, aka the Mayor gave the participant an offer of points in
exchange for what might be contained in the contestant’s chosen case. By doing so, this prompted him to ask the acclaimed question, “Can We Make A Deal”? “As each case is opened, the likelihood of the player having a valuable amount of points in his or her own case decreases or increases which will also change the Baker’s offer,” explains Traci Richards, City of Pembroke Pines Recreation & Cultural Arts Golf & Tennis Supervisor. The game concluded with the contestant with the most points receiving the first pick of three prize packages. Prizes included a 50” 4k Television, Brunch for Two at Club 19 Restaurant, Day Trip for two to Bimini, and 4 Tickets to the Marlins/Braves game on the first base line. Many other prizes were also awarded in between games. “We were so thankful that approximately 300 people attended the event and that many local restaurants provided complimentary food. This was the first time the event was played benefiting ‘Relay for Life’, but it’s sure to be a yearly event as it raised approximately $14,000,” added Richards.

raig Zinn Automotive Group, presented a check worth $159,045 to the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital on June 12th. The donation was the culmination of a 2-month fundraising campaign. Zinn, who owns and operates Subaru of Pembroke Pines, Florida’s #1 Volume Subaru Store, according to Subaru of America’s Sales Data 2018, chose the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital as their official Hometown Charity, donating $250.00 for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased from November 15, 2018, to January 2, 2019. “As I look at the children walking by and know that the money we are giving is going to provide them with immediate services feels incredible. We are committed to our community; it is our responsibility to be not just a good businessman, but to be a good corporate citizen,” said Craig Zinn, founder, and CEO at the Craig Zinn Automotive Group. Community investment is the foundation of how the Craig Zinn Automotive Group operates. So
much so that community leaders came together to acknowledge Craig Zinn for his ongoing humanitarian contributions. City of Pembroke Pines, Mayor, Frank Ortis, along with Vice Mayor Jay Schwartz, and Commissioner Angelo Castillo recognized Mr. Zinn by presenting him with the Key to the City of Pembroke Pines. Broward County Commissioner, Dr. Barbara Sharief’s office, presented a Proclamation on behalf of the Broward County Mayor, and Board of Commissioner declaring June 10 as “Subaru of Pembroke Pines Day” in Broward County. U.S. Congresswoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued a Congressional Congratulatory Letter of special recognition to Mr. Zinn for his outstanding and dedicated service to the South Florida Community. “Our team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is beyond grateful for the support of Mr. Zinn and his family, the Craig Zinn Automotive Group and the Subaru of Pembroke Pine’s ‘Share the Love’ initiative. Their generosity supports our mission to

provide exceptional quality of care in a loving and caring environment to the children and families in our community. Philanthropy and corporate support are critical to our mission as we grow the hospital by four stories and extend our services to families in South Florida and beyond. We are so thankful,” said Caitlin B. Stella, MPH, Chief Executive Officer at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Over the last four years, through his dealership Subaru of Pembroke Pines, Craig Zinn has donated more than $616,000 to local hometown causes, making Subaru of Pembroke Pines the most charitable Subaru retailer in the United States to date.

“LUCCA”
ASK THE EXPERT
Making Sense of Facial Rejuvenation BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ifestyle lift, S-Lift, Whisper lift, Feather lift, etc. The names go on and on but these procedures are almost identical. Cosmetic surgeons will change the name of a straightforward procedure in an attempt to gain new patients, attract attention to “their” practice, or to lure an uneducated patient into thinking that “their” procedure is somehow “better” than what has been done thousands of times before by well-qualified plastic surgeons. I will attempt to clarify this terminology with an explanation of facelift technique and indications. The original “facelift procedure” was performed by Dr. Eugen Höllander in 1901, and involved elevating with tightening the facial skin only. The procedure has evolved and undergone multiple transformations. Today, a facelift typically involves elevation of the skin on cheek and neck with tightening of the underlying muscle (the SMAS in the cheek and the platysma on the neck). The 21st Century approach to facial rejuvenation focuses on a structured reconstruction as well with fat grafting and tissue tightening. As the skin ages there is a progressive loss of collagen and elastic which results in increased skin laxity. This skin change, coupled with loss of the underlying soft tissue volume, results in prominent nasolabial folds, jowls, and neck bands. In order to improve the appearance of the face and neck, a skin tightening procedure should be performed. This can be accomplished several ways, lifting and removing excess skin, a skin resurfacing procedure with laser or chemical peel, or restoring loss of soft tissue volume with fat or synthetic fillers. These techniques can be used alone or in a combination depending on each person’s individual facial anatomy and appearance goals. In describing face lifting procedures, the facial skin is elevated, the underlying muscle is tightened and excess skin is removed. When the skin laxity is limited to the cheek area, a mini – or short-scar facelift, can be performed (scar is limited to the area in the front of the ear). If neck skin laxity and neck bands are present, additional incisions can be made behind the ear and under the chin. This technique is referred to as a full facelift, or face and neck lift. The Lifestyle lift and S-Lift have similar incisions with limited undermining or elevation of the face and neck skin. If there is heaviness or sagging of the eyebrow then a browlift or forehead lift is performed. The aging appearance of the upper and lower eyelids is treated with a blepharoplasty and is a separate procedure from a facelift. In certain cases, depending on the patient’s facial appearance, a facelift is performed in combination with soft tissue volume addition by fat transfer, skin smoothing with a chemical peel or laser resurfacing. All of the procedures can be performed under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s medical history and comfort level. The most important factor to consider when making a decision to have elective cosmetic surgery is the surgeon, the facility, and the anesthesia provider. Only have facial plastic surgery performed by a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery in an accredited outpatient facility or hospital. Anesthesia should be administered by a licensed, board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).

BY EVAN BARON he quote below is from the Florida Collaborative Law Process Act. It is probably somewhat contrary to what many of you or friends or family have experienced while going through a divorce. Everyone has heard the “horror stories” of endless litigation and exorbitant fees. There is in fact a way to possibly avoid those issues, by using the collaborative process. It is defined as “a unique non- adversarial process that preserves a working relationship between the parties and reduces the emotional and financial toll of litigation”. There are some definite rules that must be followed if the parties agree to use the collaborative process. In the collaborative process, both parties and their respective attorneys act as a team and not as adversaries. In most instances there are other “team members” such as accountants, financial advisers, or mental health professionals. The “team” schedules meetings with all parties present. An agenda is prepared and the “team” attempts to move forward to resolve all the issues that are involved. This is a process and therefore the “IT IS THE POLICY OF THIS STATE parties should be prepared to have these “team meetings” TO ENCOURAGE THE PEACEFUL on more than one occasion. RESOLUTION OF DISPUTES AND THE There are some definite EARLY RESOLUTION OF PENDING rules that must be followed if the parties agree to use the LITIGATION THROUGH A VOLUNTARY collaborative process. SETTLEMENT PROCESS” “As part of this no adversarial and voluntary resolution of disputes, lawyers who engage in the collaborative law process in a family law matter, and any other lawyers in that lawyer’s firm, may not afterwards represent any party in any related proceeding except to request that a court approve the settlement reached during the collaborative law process or in specified emergency situations in accordance with family law court rules.” As stated above, if for some reason the collaborative process “breaks down” and litigation becomes the only alternative, the collaborative attorney must withdraw from representing his/her client. Therefore, if the process is not successful, either a new attorney must be retained, or the client can represent his/herself. One attorney cannot represent both parties. In addition, both parties must agree to use the collaborative process. All parties must sign a written agreement before the process begins stating each client’s intent to resolve the dissolution through the collaborative process, each party’s acceptance that they shall make timely, full and candid informal disclosure of information without formal discovery and their understanding that if either party initiates a proceeding in court, the process shall terminate and the attorney’s involved cannot continue their representation. Attorneys are now required to advise prospective clients about the collaborative process. Although there is no actual certification an attorney can obtain to be declared a “Collaborative Attorney”, there are attorneys who have been trained in the process. As in all matters of law, experience and training are always beneficial to a client. If you or anyone you know are interested in the Collaborative Process, please give my office a call. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.
LEGALLY SPEAKING
Some Thoughts on Legacy BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
L
egacy means so much more than the assets we leave behind in the form of an inheritance. Most of us never give much thought to what our legacy might be. We think about a will or trust that carefully lays out how our property is distributed after we are gone. It’s usually about our “stuff.” Interestingly, studies on adults and their inheritances may surprise and disappoint you. The Journal of Family and Economic Issues reported that adults who receive an inheritance save only half of what they receive. Other studies point to statistics showing virtually all money or property left to love ones in the form of an inheritance is spent within nine months. So thinking in terms of money and property, a legacy has a very short shelf life. With that in mind, let’s explore other ways to leave a legacy that will live on long after you are gone. Charitable Giving Making charity a part of your estate plan does two important things. Most obviously it provides support to a cause or causes you deem important. But it is also a teaching moment for your loved ones; it reinforces the importance of providing for the greater good. Many of us have made quiet personal promises to support a charity or cause “later,” or “when we can better afford it.” Making room in your final wishes for charitable giving answers those promises. Aside from the tax advantage charitable bequests generate, this selfless act can echo for generations. Many people leave a percentage of their estate to charity instead of a specific dollar amount. By leaving a percentage, your family and charity will receive proportionate shares regardless of how large or small your estate is. Instead of leaving money to a charity in a will, you may also consider naming a charity as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or retirement plan.
Ethical will An ethical will has ancient origins, originally appearing in the Book of Genesis when a dying Jacob spoke with his sons to share wisdom and his hopes for how they should live their lives. Originally, ethical wills were communicated orally, but were later written as letters. Today, ethical wills are known as “legacy letters.” It is a way to communicate to loved ones your hopes and dreams, regrets, and lessons learned. Often apologies are offered and forgiveness is sought. Family lore, favorite jobs, funny stories may all be part of your letter. A well-circulated legacy letter was written by President Obama to his daughters on the eve of his first inauguration. Think of a legacy letter as a way to pass along wisdom and love to a future generation. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
Pembroke Pines Has Much to Offer This Summer BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS am happy to announce that the Florida League of Cities has selected our City as the recipient of the “City Spirit Award” in appreciation of creating the “Raising Positive Children” initiative, an ongoing series for both parents and guardians of school-age children, educators and youth advocates to bring attention to and find solutions for the many issues that both parents and children face today at home and at school. I am so grateful to Commissioner Siple, Principal Castellano and the Education Roundtable Forum for all their hard work in creating this community engagement program and

educational series. I encourage the community to learn more about the City of Pembroke Pines’ latest events by subscribing to Pines Media on YouTube, reading the city’s newspaper City Connect, checking the City’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ cityofpembrokepines, and accessing Twitter or Instagram using @cityofppines. Residents with Comcast can view Pembroke Pines Media programming on Channel 78, while residents with AT&T U-Verse can view programming on Channel 99 and click on Pembroke Pines TV. It’s never too late to learn how to swim. We have had several drownings already this year in Broward County. I urge everyone to please make swimming lessons a priority in their lives. With more people hitting the waterways during the summer months, please be cautious. Take the necessary steps to keep you and your family safe. Registration for swim lessons can be made at the City of Pembroke Pines Towngate Park, 901 N.W. 155 Avenue, any Monday through Thursday beginning at noon through 4:30 p.m., and on Fridays from noon to 7 p.m. Lessons are offered for children age one through adults. The swimming session fee for Pembroke Pines residents is $45.00, and $57.00 for non-residents. Lessons are taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors (WSI) and are offered at three Pembroke Pines locations. For more information about swimming lessons, please call 954-450-6895. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the City’s “See, Click and Fix” program that helps cities resolve and solve various issues easily and efficiently with just a click from a smart mobile device. The application is available to all residents and business owners to report non-emergency issues such as potholes, graffiti, chronic overgrown landscaping, and missing traffic signs. Through a free app downloaded to a Smartphone device such as an iPhone, android or blackberry, residents can take a picture of a problem (i.e. a pothole), scroll down from a list of defined issues and then hit send. The GPS in the Smartphone can pinpoint the exact location of the problem, or the person can drag the map marker or input an address manually. The issue is then sent to the appropriate department such as public services, public safety, parks & recreation, police, etc. and a confirmation receipt within 48 hours will then be received. Residents can then go online (type See, Click, Fix into SEARCH bar) and track their issue and vote on other posted issues that need attention. We have many other exciting events coming up this summer, be sure to check our calendar at www.ppines.com for info on these and other planned events and to visit our Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines. Wishing you a very safe and fun summer! Mayor Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. 40 JULY 2019 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
