It’s Election Time
T
he Florida Primary Election was on August 28th. We hope you joined us in voting. We feel lucky to live in a country where every citizen has the right to vote, regardless of age, sex or economic standing. According to the Freedom House’s Freedom in the World 2018 report, more than 60% of people on earth live in countries without these basic freedoms. Unfortunately, by some standards, freedom is becoming more constrained here in the United States. There are many important issues at all levels of government today. We can decide whether to change the direction of our country or keep it the same. The easiest and best way to ensure we retain our personal and economic liberty is to participate in elections. Each of us can make an equal impact on how our country, state, county and city is governed, regardless if you are a Democrat or Republican, or a liberal or a conservative. The general election is November 6th. Mark your calendar and remember to make your voice heard and vote! Sincerely,
Terry and Christy Jaillet President & Publishers

INSPIRING INDIVIDUALS
BY DEBBY TEICH
D
uring the 9th Annual ANF Group Tour de Broward, Guy Romain and Michael Sayih crossed the finish line together, as they have so many times in the last three years - pushing, motivating, and inspiring each other. Both Pembroke Pines residents represented Special Compass, an organization that creates life-changing experiences for the differently-abled by promoting inclusion through community athletic events. “Michael was born with cerebral palsy, but that doesn’t make him less an athlete than anyone else,” said Romain, a Special Compass ambassador and physical therapist who works with Sayih. “We don’t take it easy on him during therapy and it was important for us both to support kids with medical issues at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.” Romain and Sayih were among more than 8,000 people who participated in the event, which included 50 and 100K bicycle rides, a 5K timed run, 3K walk, and the “Power of Play Kid Zone.” Among the crowd were current and former patients/families, teams of fundraisers, and participants dressed in festive outfits and displaying inspirational messages. The event raised more than $550,000, which will be used to help expand facilities and enhance programs and services for kids and families at the Children’s Hospital in Hollywood. Romain has been actively involved with races
for the past six years and an ambassador for one year. As an ambassador he advises athletes on safety and injury prevention, always emphasizing the importance of preparation, proper conditioning and hydration to minimize possible injury and dehydration post-race. “It’s a way to give back to the community and help disabled athletes,” said Romain. “As abled athletes, we need to continuously encourage the less abled who have the desire to compete and often do not have a platform to do so.” Romain and Sayih compete in approximately 10 to 15 races per year, supporting each other throughout each race. In most of the races, Romain takes Sayih out of the pushchair at the end, so he can walk the last five to 10 feet to the finish line. “Michael inspires me by his dedication to always wanting to push his limits,” said Romain. “He is not a complainer despite how hard things may get. He is goal driven and once he’s set his mind on getting things done, he will apply himself to reaching that goal.” Romain says it is very important for athletes like Michael to be able to compete. He hopes his efforts will inspire others to help the less abled achieve their dream to compete. “Competing is a challenge both physically and mentally,” said Romain. “This requires dedication, consistency and discipline. As a disabled athlete,

these are even more important as the lack of mobility creates other comorbidities that have very negative outcomes at time if unattended. Being able to compete and prevent these is key. Being able to compete also helps self-confidence and keeps the body in motion.”

Pembroke Pines Police Explorers Participate in Law Enforcement Academy
M
BY DEBBY TEICH
embers of the PPPD Police Explorers Program recently participated in the Annual Law Enforcement Explorer Academy, which included eight different agencies and 67 Explorers. For the past 15 years, the week-long academy has been a way for the newest explorers to experience activities from other law enforcement agencies they might not get to see on a regular basis. During the Academy, the Explorers experienced the following: ▸▸ They learned how the U.S. helps keep airplanes secure while traveling with undercover agents and how to detect radiation bombs at large venues. ▸▸ They met with a judge and saw live courtroom proceedings. ▸▸ They collected fingerprints and learned the proper gear to wear to collect evidence. ▸▸ They explored helicopters and boats, climbed into armored vehicles, controlled a miniature robot, and held weapons that the SWAT teams use. ▸▸ They learned how to take down an uncooperative suspect during an arrest.
▸▸ They learned how a K-9 unit works. ▸▸ They reviewed the basic rules for conducting standardized tests on persons suspected of driving under the influence and what is required by law. ▸▸ They learned what to look for when approaching scenes that could be contaminated by someone trying to commit suicide with liquid mixes of chemicals. ▸▸ They studied our rights as citizens, as well as types and degrees of crimes. ▸▸ They learned about the qualifications for law enforcement jobs. The Pembroke Pines Police Explorers Program is for kids, ages 14-21, that have completed 8th grade and are interested in learning about a law enforcement career. They learn what it is like to be a police officer; run through practice scenarios; ride with an officer; get an explorer uniform; help the Police Department at city events, and more. They also participate at county and state competitions against other explorer posts from around the state. Many of the Explorers eventually become officers with the Pembroke Pines Police Department, as well as many other local agencies. Some go into the military and then return to
become officers. “This is a great way for young teens to get some real-life experience for possible careers in their future,” said Cheryl Watters, former PSA. “The program is very hands on.” For information, visit www.ppines.com.

Seniors to Test Their Spanish Spelling Abilities BY DEBBY TEICH
I
n recognition of National Hispanic Heritage month, seniors will once again compete for the title of “Spelling Bee Champion.” The 7th Annual Senior Spanish Spelling Bee will be held on September 11, at 12:30pm, at the City of Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. The deadline for community members, ages 50 and older, to sign up is September 7.
2017 participants
2017 Spelling Bee winners were (l to r): Mariam Martinez (1st place), Emilia Goenaga (2nd place) and Julio Garzon (3rd place).
“Members look forward to the competition, because they have fun with their friends,” said Suzy Felix, Activities Coordinator. “Getting bragging rights is just a plus!” Pembroke Pines Director of Community Services
and Housing Jay Shechter, who loves to play Scrabble, came up with the idea for a Spelling Bee. After holding the first two in English, the Spanish-speaking seniors wanted a turn. Schecter agreed to hold the next contest in Spanish. The Center now offers two Spelling Bees each year – one in English and one in Spanish. “Spelling Bees are like medicine for the brain,” said Felix. “They keep you young!” Last year participants ranged in age from 50 to 80. The tension was high throughout the competition, as contestants spelled a wide range of words using
the pronunciation from the Spanish alphabet, including any special punctuation. The contest started with easy words, such as “blusa” and “hablar,” and progressed with more difficult ones. Once contestants misspelled a word, they were eliminated. Mariam Martinez was declared the winner after she correctly spelled “barbitúrico,” which means barbiturate in English. She received $50. Emilia Goenaga was the second place winner ($30) and Julio Garzon won third place ($20). All three also received a Certificate of Recognition and earned bragging rights for the year. Last year, there was also a special guest. One-year-old Ezra Wolfson wore a Bumble Bee costume to the contest and was crowned Spelling Bee Mascot. This year’s Spelling Bee will follow the same rules and offer the same cash prizes as last year. To sign up, visit the activities desk at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center prior to September 7. The Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue in Pembroke Pines. Free for SWFP members. SWFP Membership Card required. For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www.ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services.
4th Annual Employment Expo to Connect US Military Veterans and Employers BY DEBBY TEICH
U
nited States Military Veterans have experience working as part of a team to accomplish difficult tasks in a stressful environment, so they should have no problem finding jobs. Unfortunately, that is not often the case. On October 2, from 10am - 2pm, the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center will be reaching out to Veterans and potential employers to help connect them at a job fair. The event will open to the public at noon. At the Expo, veterans will have an opportunity to network with veteran-friendly employers, comprised of over 40 different companies and a dozen social service agencies. Last year, more than 200 veterans attended. “This is a wonderful experience and opportunity for our veterans and the employers alike,” said Silvia A. Aguilar, Community
2017 Employment Expo
Services Administrator. “Employers have direct access to trained and qualified candidates and our veterans have first glance to valuable and rewarding job opportunities.” The Veteran’s Employment Expo is an extension of the City of Pembroke Pines Re-Energize and Re-Connect Initiative, which has a goal of providing resources and housing at the R & R Village Veterans Housing, located on the Howard C. Forman Services Campus, for Active and Honorably Discharged Members of the military. The City of Pembroke Pines is well known for its support of United States Veterans and their families. In 1972, following the death of Pembroke Pines resident Donnith H. Fletcher in Vietnam, city officials named a park in his honor. The City established and refurbished the R & R (Re-Energize and Re-Connect)

Village, which provides temporary affordable housing to help Veterans reestablish themselves as they reenter the workforce and get back on their feet. Some other efforts include a street renaming, hosting recreational activities at the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger State Veterans Nursing Home, supporting the Honor Flight Program, and many more. The Center’s volunteer program welcomes people who are interested in volunteering for its Veterans programs. Employers interested in participating in the 2018 Veterans Employment Expo to recruit and screen for potential veteran employees can contact Silvia A. Aguilar, Community Services Administrator, at 954450-6888 or via email at saguilar@ppines.com. There are also sponsorship opportunities for those wishing to assist with programming for our veterans. hen planning a wedding or any other special event such a Bar/Bar Mitzvah, Sweet Sixteen, or Quinceañera, so many decisions must be made. It's only natural for most people to start asking many questions. They usually start out simple...
Which DJ/band keeps guests dancing all night long? Who is the "it" emcee? What venue can hold 200+ people? Does the photographer work well with children? More importantly, does the photographer know how to use Photoshop? Do people really eat duck pate? Are pigs in a blanket so 1980? How do I make sure my guests arrive on time? Which are more popular – roses or peonies? What liquor should I serve in the ice luge? Why do I need to know about lighting? How much is my budget? One should also do their own research by reading testimonials, asking their own questions and listening to their trusted event planner if they have one. At the end of the day, it's your event and you should do what you are comfortable with. Besides verbal recognition and testimonials, look at their work. Does their style match yours? Are they going to "get you"? Watch videos, see photography samples, listen to the emcee/band and look at decor samples. Most importantly, meet them for yourself. Seniors Try Out for Miami HEAT Golden Oldies Dance Team
BY DEBBY TEICH
A
vivacious group of seniors did not let their age get in the way when they auditioned for a spot on the world renown Miami HEAT Golden Oldies Dance Team at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines. The Miami HEAT was looking for the hippest, coolest, young-atheart senior citizens to be a part of its 2018-2019 senior citizen hip-hop dance team. The contestants, age 60 or over, worked on mastering the latest dance moves with rhythm and style. “There was a wide array of talented men and women competing for a spot on the 2018-19 Golden Oldies Dance Team,” said Jay Shechter Director The 2018-19 Miami HEAT Golden Oldies Dance Team
of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. “This group of men and women will certainly energize the HEAT fan base and American Airlines Arena.” Dressed in the Miami Heat team colors of red, black, and white, approximately 50 men and women from all over South Florida turned up the heat as they brought their “A” game to the audition. The competition was on fire as the potential new members of the Golden Oldies learned routines, grooved to the music and showcased their funky dance moves for the judges. The Golden Oldies have been performing for the HEAT Nation for over 14 years. They have a devoted following and have become one of the NBA’s most popular senior citizen dance teams. All dancers must be at least 60 years of age, have flexible schedules for rehearsals, games, and appearances during the season.

WISH KID
Make-A-Wish Surprises Teen with Car Makeover BY DEBBY TEICH
L
ike many teenagers, 18-year-old Ryan Persaud of Pembroke Pines is passionate about cars. He recently received a special surprise when Make-A-Wish Southern Florida customized his battered 14-year-old Lexus, which had faded paint, dings, scratches, and factory hubcaps. The extensive makeover – featuring body work, seats, wheels/rims, hood, lights, and a custom paint wrap – is what the teenager wished for while battling cancer. Make-A-Wish revealed the car to the teen and his family during a special presentation at Superior Auto Design. Ryan was diagnosed with cancer on his birthday in 2016. He received four rounds of chemo and had no energy to do anything at lowest moments. His family kept his spirits up and frequently reminded him he had to get better so he could accomplish all he wanted to do. He has been in remission since last summer. “Nothing prepares you to hear that your child has cancer,” said Camille Persaud, Ryan’s mom. “I cried a
good cry and had to be tough for him, because I could not let him see how upset and devastated I was.” Camille says that Ryan was very excited about the makeover. “It was great to see the excitement on his face when he walked in and saw the car,” said Camille. “He is usually very chatty and he was speechless.” Ryan was very touched by the effort. He says that he plans to stay involved in the organization and give back to other Wish kids. “The car is outstanding,” said Ryan. “They went above and beyond with this car. I am more than happy with how it came out. Make-A-Wish really helped me and I am so appreciative of that. This is a landmark in my life that I will never forget about. I look forward to making an impact on other kids’ lives.” Since 1983, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida has granted more than 11,000 life-changing wishes for children who have critical illnesses. It aims to grant a
wish for every medically-eligible child in its territory. Wish kids most often ‘wish to be’ (something), ‘wish to meet’ (someone), ‘wish to go’ (somewhere), ‘wish to have’ (something), or ‘wish to give’ (to a cause) and the nonprofit organization makes this happen for the child and his/her entire family at no cost or obligation. “The wishes we grant aren’t just nice, they’re necessary,” said Norman Wedderburn, president & CEO, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. “The power of a dream fulfilled is often the pivot point in a family’s battle against illness, the place where people whose lives have been turned upside-down use the magic we deliver to regain control.” For information, visit www.sfla.wish.org.

Ankle Pain in Children BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
T
he ankle joint is a complex structure composed of three bones, eleven ligaments, growth plates and cartilage that allow the ankle joint to move smoothly. Tendons move the foot in all directions across the ankle joint. Injuries to the ankle can affect any of these structures. Ankle pain in children is most commonly due to traumatic injuries. This can come from twisting the ankle during a sport or activity or from blunt trauma to the area. Here is a look at some of the common types of ankle pain in children and recommended treatments: Flat Feet: A primary source of ankle pain, especially in active children, is flat feet. Pain is most common on the inner aspect of the lower leg, ankle and foot. The condition is usually associated with premature fatigue and general avoidance of most activities that require running. If associated with tightness of the calf muscle, this can be a very harmful combination that can preclude most activities and cause chronic low-grade pain for many years. Immobilization of the
leg in a cast to stretch the tight muscles followed by orthotics and physical therapy are indispensable in not only eliminating the problem but allowing the child to participate in most activities at a much higher level than ever before. Growth Plates: Growth plates are present on the inner and outer aspect of the ankle bone. They are areas within the bone that allow bone growth. It is the weak link in the ankle when comparing it to the ligaments and bone structure. Injuries are most common in sports, especially soccer. Injuries usually cause a significant amount of pain, swelling and difficulty weightbearing. Examination usually reveals pinpoint tenderness on the growth plate itself. The treatment of these injuries is usually dictated by the injury type. Simpler injuries may be immobilized for a period of four to eight weeks. More moderate to severe injuries may require surgery to put the growth plates back into their normal position. Long-term prognosis is excellent for simple injuries and guarded for more complex ones. Fractures: Breaks of the bone can occur in the lower leg and in the ankle bone itself. They are usually accompanied by growth plate injuries. These injuries usually occur from twisting the ankle or foot, especially while playing sports. Swelling that is diffuse, discoloration and pain with any attempts at weightbearing are observed. Treatment for simple breaks
may require cast immobilization for a period of four to eight weeks. If the bones are out of place they may be gently manipulated back into position nonsurgically. If grossly malaligned, surgery may be necessary to restore normal anatomy. Prognosis is dependent on the bone injured with the type and the timing of treatment. Ligament Injuries: Usually less common in children and more common in teenagers, ligament injuries occur when the ligament is twisted beyond its elastic limits. This can cause a ligament to stretch, partially or completely tear. There is usually pinpoint tenderness over the ligament(s) involved. Significant swelling would be present in the front of the ankle and discoloration can extend along the outside of the foot, even down to the toes. Weightbearing is always difficult. Treatment of this condition is always to immobilize the ankle for a period of four to six weeks and follow with a short course of physical therapy. Prognosis is excellent in almost every case. n Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board-Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. He specializes in the treatment of infants, children, teens and adults with injuries, pain and deformities. 10 Top Toxic Foods for Dogs BY DR.JOHANNA M. BUSTTER, OWNER AND VETERINARIAN AT LAGUNA ISLES ANIMAL HOSPITAL

t is no secret that dogs love food and they seem mostly interested in whatever they see us eating or cooking. They are also very good at begging for a taste of our food. Although sharing small amounts of human food with your dog on occasion is not usually a cause for concern, it is important to know that many foods can be toxic and even deadly to their health. Below are 10 of the most common foods that have the potential to be toxic for dogs. ▸▸ Alcohol: Alcohol is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and affects pets quickly. Ingestion of alcoholic beverages and food products containing alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhea, dangerous drops of blood sugar, blood pressure, seizures, respiratory issues and even death. Chocolate, Coffee and Caffeine: These products all contain methylxanthines which when ingested can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increase heart rate, blood pressure levels and death. Grapes and Raisins: These fruits can cause kidney failure. The effects of ingesting them may not be noticeable for days and weeks after ingestion. Signs of kidney failure include, excessive drinking, excessive urination and decrease appetite. Milk and Dairy: Since dogs cannot breakdown lactose in milk, giving them milk or dairy products can cause diarrhea. Onion and Garlic: They are easily found on many of the foods we cook and consume daily. Onion and garlic can cause gastrointestinal irritation and could lead to red blood cell damage. The higher the amount found in food the higher the complications. Raw/Undercook Meat, Fish and Eggs: These can contain bacteria like Salmonella and E.coli that can cause food poisoning. Opposite to most people believe, feeding a dog raw egg can lead to skin and coat problems. This is because raw eggs has an enzyme that decreases the absorption of biotin. Fat Trimmings and Bones: Table scraps often contain meat fat and bones. Fat trimmings from meat, both cooked and uncooked, may cause pancreatitis in dogs. Dogs can choke on bones. They also have splinters and can cause an obstruction or laceration of your dog’s digestive track. Make sure all trashes have lids so your pet cannot nose around for scraps or bones. Be careful not to have children give bones or throw them in the ground since pet can access them easily. Xylitol: Xylitol is used as a sweetener in many products, including gum, candy, baked goods and toothpaste. First signs of toxicity include, vomiting, lethargy, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), loss of coordination, seizures. Liver failure can be seen within a few days. Salt and Salty Snack Foods: Potato chips, pretzels, scrap foods and salted popcorn can have large amounts of salts and it can be dangerous to your pet. Large amounts of salt can produce excessive thirst and urination, vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, elevated body temperature, seizures and even poisoning. Fatty Foods: As much as we are tempted to share fast food leftovers, they can be very harmful to your dog. Foods cooked in grease like burgers, hot dogs, ribs, steak, pork chops and dried chicken can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even pancreatitis.

Do Your Hands Give Away Your Age? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
T
he focus of anti-aging procedures often rests in rejuvenation of the face. A person’s hands are often neglected, and therefore remain a tell-tale sign of aging. The hands are continuously exposed to environmental elements. There are distinct signs of aging seen in one’s hand appearance. Characteristics that are treatable with minimally invasive procedures include visible tendons, the bony appearance, visible/prominent veins along with skin pigmentation changes and wrinkles. These changes occur as a result of progressive thinning of the skin overlying the back of the hand with increased skin laxity and loss of soft tissue volume. Rejuvenation of aging hands involves two distinct factors. Firstly, treatment of the overlying skin to remove age spots, pigmentation, and skin wrinkling or laxity, and secondly restoration of lost volume through soft tissue volume enhancement. Ideal hand rejuvenation is achieved by replenishing your skin’s lost volume. The only FDA approved injectable filler for volume restoration in the hands is Radiesse®. This volumizing filler immediately provides the volume and lift that is necessary to diminish the signs of aging hands because of the calcium-based microspheres and gel that comprise this product.

OPEN 7 DAYS This filler acts as a scaffold beneath the skin after it is injected providing the structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. This process continues for several months after Radiesse® is injected, extending the initial effect lasting more than a year to achieve long-lasting hand rejuvenation after a single treatment. By adding volume beneath the skin, Radiesse® raises the skin level so that tendons, joints and veins lose their prominence. Radiesse® is safe, effective and a non-surgical treatment which provides immediate smoothing of wrinkles, scars and replenishes soft tissue volume loss. Radiesse® doesn’t require allergy testing. The procedure is done with topical anesthesia, with injections taking between ten and fifteen minutes. There may be minor swelling, redness or bruising at the site of the injection, which typically resolves within one or two days. The Radiesse® hand lift is the latest procedure that utilizes microspheres of calcium hydoxyapatite to restore a more youthful appearance to the aging hands. Other procedures can be done in conjunction with Radiesse® hand lifts, such as chemical peels and laser rejuvenation to reduce age spots and improve skin texture. ours, mine, and ours. Sadly, in America the average marriage lasts only seven years, with one out of two marriages ending in divorce. As over seventy-five percent of divorced individuals eventually choose to remarry, blended families now outnumber traditional nuclear families. And while this family dynamic has become the new normal, it’s a far cry from what was portrayed on the classic television series, “The Brady Bunch.” If you are part of a blended family, you face some unique estate planning challenges. These include providing for your current spouse if he or she survives you,,and making sure that when your spouse dies your children will be taken care of. Obviously, after the first spouse passes, the family dynamic can change dramatically; what the surviving spouse ends up doing with his or her assets can often be unpredictable. As we all know, blood is thicker than water. Let’s explore just a few possible estate planning options. Your spouse. A simple, albeit not wise, approach would be to leave everything to your spouse. As your spouse adores your children, you have no doubt that he/she will take care of your children after you are gone, right? Keep in mind that an unintended consequence of this approach might be totally disinheriting your own children! Consider this: After you are gone, if your spouse becomes incapacitated it is very likely that your spouse’s children will take over the financial affairs of the family. You don’t need a vivid imagination to see how that might turn into a disaster. What happens when your spouse dies? Or remarries? Without thoughtful planning, your assets may ultimately be inherited by your stepchildren, or even by the person who marries your spouse! Proper legal planning can avoid this potential pitfall. Your children. Another solution is to leave assets to your spouse and your children. Of course, this guarantees that your children will not be disinherited, but here too this path may lead to unintended consequences. Leaving assets outright to your children opens up a wide range of concerns, including the possibility that they may squander their inheritance by spending or investing unwisely, or lose most or all in a nasty divorce, an untimely lawsuit, or through bankruptcy. Even if your children are adults, shouldn’t you still protect them from future creditors and predators? Your ex-spouse. You probably don’t consider your ex, but your former spouse plays a role in your estate planning. Think about it. If you leave money to your minor children, it is likely that your ex-spouse will be appointed by the probate court to manage your children’s property. What happens if a child dies while single and childless? Who would inherit their assets? As the next-of-kin of your children, that individual can be your ex-wife or ex-husband! Planning effectively for a blended family requires creativity, experience and know-how. Consult with an estate planning professional to formulate a plan that is right for you and your family. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Pembroke Pines to Host Broward Mental Health Summit BY DEBBY TEICH
G
ood health involves taking care of your body, as well as your mind. On September 12, during National Suicide Prevention Week, the public can learn more about the mental health issues facing our communities in South Florida at the Broward Mental Health Summit 2018, held from 8 am to 5pm, at Charles F. Dodge City Center in Pembroke Pines. The Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County, underwritten by FPL, will bring together the leading mental health providers in South Florida from county, state and federal government; private practice; non-profits; and academia to discuss and examine the current issues relating to mental health in Broward County. “Mental Health is not being addressed and is causing deaths in our communities,” said Juan Carlos Arias, Chairman, Event Planning Committee. Over 300 people are expected to attend the inaugural summit, which will focus on issues affecting five populations: Law Enforcement, Attorneys, Elderly, Veterans and Youth. Whether you are a healthcare provider, first responder, aspiring activist unsure of how to contribute, an accomplished community leader, a business owner, elected official, or just simply a concerned citizen,
you will leave with concrete data, information tools, and a better understanding of the challenges affecting those with mental health issues. Some of the topics that will be addressed include: ▸▸ Law Enforcement: Pre-Employment Hiring Assessment, Mental Health Issues During Career, Fitness for Duty Evaluations, Contact Between Officers & Individuals With Mental Health Issues ▸▸ Attorneys: Stress, Mental Health and Unhealthy Behavior in the Legal Community ▸▸ Elderly: Isolation, Abuse/Neglect, Suicide ▸▸ Veterans: Suicide Prevention, Trauma, Homeless ▸▸ Youth: Suicide, Depression and Societal Pressures During lunch, keynote speaker Michi Marshall will speak about Stigma. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Why Litigate When You Can Collaborate? BY EVAN BARON ften, I meet individuals who are more anxious about the prospect of litigation than they are about the ultimate dissolution of their marriage. This is likely a result of the public’s general perception that divorce proceedings are and always will be adversarial in nature. However, the State of Florida has experienced a paradigm shift. One in which families can address and resolve their divorce (or other family related matters, such as child support, timesharing modifications and Paternity actions), in a team setting which assembles for the sole purpose and goal of helping individuals separate without tearing their families apart. This paradigm shift is called the Collaborative Process. Contemplating divorce is very time-consuming and mentally taxing. The saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” The same, however, is untrue for individuals contemplating ending their marriage. The mental gymnastics required when considering all aspects and potential consequences of a divorce are physically and emotionally draining for anyone. This is especially true in cases involving children. Now, imagine that after careful deliberation, you make the difficult decision that divorce is the right choice for you and your family. However, with that choice, you are faced with the possibility that initiating a divorce will equate to “going to war” with your spouse or each spouse’s attorney going to war on their client’s behalf. This fear is often crippling and results in spouses delaying a divorce proceeding, even though all circumstances point to the divorce being necessary for the wellbeing of everyone involved, including children. Whether spouses decide to forgo a divorce should be based on the potential for reconciliation not because of a fear of the legal process embarked on when dissolving a marriage. Although adversarial litigation is a real possibility for some families, it does not have to be the reality for all families. The Collaborative Process affords families the opportunity to choose a more holistic approach to resolving their case. One that not only provides families with more control over every aspect of their case but also affords families peace of mind. The Collaborative Process is a non-adversarial alternative to obtaining a divorce, child support and timesharing modifications or establishments of paternity. It provides a team setting made up of professionals, including a mental health professional, a financial neutral as well as the attorney for each party. Rather than appear at hearings before a Judge, families take part in team meetings that create an effective environment conducive to resolving cases efficiently and at a lesser cost than traditional litigation. The Collaborative Law Process Act and Rules is Florida Law, having officially gone into effect back in July 1, 2017. The attorneys at Evan H. Baron & Associates are collaboratively trained and able to assist anyone interested in this option. If you or anyone you know is interested in the Collaborative Process and would like more information on how to get started, please contact our office.
