W

e are now a few weeks into the school year and hopefully your family has adjusted to the new routine. This year, three of our kids are attending Broward County Public Schools for the first time. One thing we have noticed here, that is different than their old schools, is that breakfast is offered to all students every day – and it is free for ALL children. The idea behind Universal Free Breakfast is a simple one: kids who eat a nutritious breakfast will be less hungry and, therefore, better able to pay attention throughout the day making them better students. Making the meals free to all students destigmatizes the situation. Economically disadvantaged kids won’t feel prying eyes when eating the free breakfast and, therefore, will be more likely to eat it. In practice, this is exactly what happens. According to the Food Research & Action Center, children who attend schools that serve universal breakfasts have lower rates of obesity, fewer visits to the school nurse, better behavior, better attendance, less tardiness, and, you guessed it, better test scores, by 17.5%. In fact, students with access to a healthy breakfast are 20% more likely to graduate from high school than those who don’t. So, make sure your children make it to the bus stop on time or get to school a couple minutes early so they can join their friends for breakfast. And tell them to eat up – their education is counting on it.

COULD I WRITE THIS INTERVIEW FOR “OUR CITY” IN TWO DAYS?

BY EMILY B. LAWRENCE

Ray asked over Bluetooth. His six-year-old son, Luke, sat behind him in the car. “Okay,” I said.

I wanted every student to see the genius within themselves, so they could become great learners and thinkers, and not be dependent on me, or any tutor. I kept taking on more tutoring because I felt like I couldn’t leave these people—who were often family friends—to be dumped into the “test prep world” filled with so many people just looking to make some quick cash. These students’ futures and how they felt about themselves was too important for that.

“Em!” he said. “Thank you!”

Then genius struck me, and I thought, “I can actually help these people, and whatever money I make can fund my rap career.”

Other past students of Ray’s would do the same—more than for other teachers. No one likes to let down Ray Dass.

EB: Seriously?

From the backseat, Ray’s son started a conversation that helped me clarify why. The conversation was this: One time, Luke ordered chicken nuggets and fries. But the takeout bag came with triple the food. “It wasn’t magic,” Luke said.

RD: Yes! Originally, I didn’t even name the company after myself! I wanted to fade into the background and make music. But anytime anyone called, they were asking, “Is this the Ray Dass program?” So I had to change the name, even though it completely ruined any chance of my having any street credibility.

“What do you mean?” Ray said, laughing.

EB: I’m sure a lot of parents will be reading this interview. What would you say to them?

“It was too much. No one could eat all of that,” Luke said. Ray paused a minute.

RD: Don’t let your kids listen to rap music.

“You’re right,” he said. “That’s true.” He listened to Luke thoughtfully, and I realized why it still matters to me what Ray thinks. Twelve years ago, I was seventeen with a belly-button ring, and chronically annoyed, and Ray took me seriously. He listened to what I said. That is to say that long before his “Know You Can” tagline, Ray convinced students he knew what they could do. He said other kids’ success wasn’t genetics or destiny—if you wanted something, you just had to push. You (I) wanted that to be true. We didn’t want to let down Ray. He walked through the high school hallways with celebrity-level fanfare, as an SAT instructor. He built the #1 National Merit Program among private schools in the nation, producing hundreds of National Merit finalists and semi–finalists. No one else did that. That actually does seem a little like magic. EB: Ray, what drew you to education? RD: Before I started school, my mom and I had so much fun playing together. I realized when I was older that our games were educational. She made learning fun and was way ahead of her time. She got her Master’s in computer science in the early ‘80s, before most people even thought about owning computers. I was like a little assistant in her lab, helping grad students print their papers on these computers that no one understood yet. I was learning and teaching before I really even knew what I was doing. EB: How did you get into test prep? RD: I always wondered what I was capable of. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up and I didn’t feel like I was a genius, so I wanted to know what was possible for my future. If I could help a friend with a seemingly unsolvable problem, it made me feel like maybe there was hope for me, too. I know how this sounds but by the time I was in college, I was certain I was going to be a rapper. I was in the studio every night, and was going to classes and tutoring during the day. The thing is, I kept getting drawn into what was happening with every student I worked with. I couldn’t stand the thought of any student thinking they were anything less than capable.

I’m joking. First, come out to the RAY DASS PARENT NIGHT! That’s where I can get into a lot more detail than I can here! If you can’t make it to the event, check out the RAY DASS EXPERT TIPS page we created for this magazine, and then contact us so we can speak with you! Beyond that, the most important lesson I’ve learned working with so many kids is that most of us are capable of so much more than we realize. Incredible achievements aren’t usually so much about innate talent, as they are about believing in ourselves and putting in the work! EB: That’s always been your message, more or less. I wasn’t sure if it was just an angle you used to get us to work harder at first. But it seems like something you live by. RD: To start this company, I had to believe. I didn’t have money or business experience. I had to believe, and literally banked my future on a bunch of credit card accounts. This isn’t just a message to drive students to do their best, it’s what I’ve had to live by. EB: I haven’t asked you yet about SARA. What was your vision for the app? RD: I wanted a book that was alive: I wanted to be able touch a question, and have it come to life, to teach me—in a highquality, well-produced video—and then I’d want to be able to practice until I understood. That didn’t exist, so we created it. It feels like destiny that it was named after my mom, who was a visionary in computer science, and gave me my love for learning. EB: Last question: Do you think you’ll rap again? RD: I am rapping! I’ve been rapping! I haven’t stopped! EB: That’s a wrap! RD: Em. Stop.

Calling All Veterans to the 5th Annual Employment Expo BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

ll active and retired duty military personnel are invited to the 5th Annual Veterans Employment Expo. The anticipated event will take place on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, located at 301 NW 103 Avenue in Pembroke Pines. The general public will also be able to attend the expo starting at noon. “If you are a veteran in need of a job or know of someone, I strongly encourage you to mark this date on your calendar,” said Vice Mayor Jay Schwartz. “It’s a great opportunity for veterans to meet directly with hiring managers in our area, from a variety of companies and organizations. Here in Pembroke Pines we appreciate the support our veterans have received from the business community, and we especially appreciate our veterans for their service.” This year more than 50 companies and 15 social

service agencies are expected to participate, but there is still time and availability for those interested to recruit and screen potential veteran employees to sign up. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. The annual fair is an extension of the City of Pembroke Pines Re-Energize and Re-Connect Initiative. Their purpose is to provide resources and housing at the R & R Village Veterans Housing, located on the Howard C. Forman Services Campus, for Active and Honorable Discharged Members of the military. “We are so grateful that each year this event has grown, and that our veterans are being given the chance to explore a wide range of employment opportunities,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing. “I encourage all veterans to mark their calendars now, so they don’t miss this upcoming event.”

For employers interested in participating or sponsoring in the 2019 Veterans Employment Expo, please contact Silvia A. Aguilar, Community Services Administrator at 954-450-6888 or via email at saguilar@ppines.com.

Florida Panthers Promote Literacy Throughout South Florida BY JOHN DUKA

F

lorida Panther alum Serge Payer read Snoopy Plays Hockey at the Young At Art Library in Davie to concluded the Panthers’ Second annual Summer Reading Tour on August 7th. In conjunction with the Broward County Library Division, the Panthers stopped by 10 different libraries throughout South Florida over the last two months, using the game of hockey to promote reading and inspire young children to not only think about picking up a stick but also to pick up a book or two. With the Panther Patrol in tow, the team brought games, prizes and even a special guest reader to each stop, with the reader, typically a player or broadcaster, also taking questions and signing autographs. Some of the highlights from this summer’s tour included: Kicking off the reading tour at the Main Library in Fort Lauderdale on June 13 with special guest Randy

Moller, a former Panthers defenseman. The team’s television color analyst from FOX Sports, also stopped in to read Z for Zamboni. “For the kids to be able to hear a wonderful voice like [Randy’s] and see a player, it helps them get interested in reading,” said Broward County Main Library Youth Supervisor Autumn Dec. Other stops on the tour included the AfricanAmerican Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale, the West Regional Library in Plantation, the South Regional Library in Pembroke Pines plus many more. At each event, youngsters got to meet their hockey heroes, read a fun book, pick up an autograph and even pose for a picture with the team mascot, Stanley C. Panther! Feedback from the events was quite positive. Expect to see more reading Panthers in the future!

Pembroke Pines to Remember 9-11 at Patriot Day Memorial BY JOHN DUKA

O

n the 18th anniversary of the horrific events of September 11th, the City of Pembroke Pines will host its annual 9-11 Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony at the Pembroke Pines Memorial Park next door to the Charles F. Dodge City Center. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude around 10:30 a.m and is free. Everyone is encouraged to attend. The Ceremony will honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on this tragic day as well as America’s First Responders, the men and women who bravely faced the terror attacks on the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and in Shanksville, PA. The program will include the Presentation of Colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guards, comments from City Officials and patriotic music from local school bands

and area musicians. This day is recognized by United States law as a National Day of Service and Remembrance and has been observed every year since that tragic day in 2001. Every year on Patriot Day, flags are flown half-staff, and fellow Americans observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) which marks the exact time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. The ceremony will be directly adjacent to Pembroke Pines’ 9-11 Memorial Pavillion. The Pavillion is home to several sculptures paying tribute to the heroes lost on that day. A steel girder salvaged from the World Trade Center structure was bequeathed to Pembroke Pines in 2005. It was incorporated into sculptures brought to life by local sculptors Benoit Menasche and Felix Gonzalez.

HOMETOWN HERO

Local Boy Grows Up to Train Navy’s Future Fighters BY LT. KAT SMITH, NAVY OFFICE OF COMMUNITY OUTREACH ailors are some of the most highly-trained people on the planet. Getting them that way requires highly-dedicated and skilled instructors. At Naval Education and Training Command, this obligation falls upon hard-charging, Navy professionals who train and mentor the Navy’s future warfighters. Chief Petty Officer Jeffrey Collado, a native of Miramar, Florida, is an instructor at NETC, providing the fleet with sailors who possess the technical knowledge and skills necessary for naval service. “I really enjoy seeing their motivation and the pride they have for their country,” Collado said. Instructors provide cutting-edge technical training that transforms new sailors into mission-ready warfighters. Collado, a 2005 graduate of Miramar High School, credits his success as an instructor to many of the lessons he learned growing up in South Florida. “Diversity has taught me so much,” said Collado. “You learn from everyone you meet.” NETC educates and trains those who serve our nation, taking them from “streetto-fleet” by transforming new sailors into highly skilled, operational, and combat ready warfighters. They do this by providing tools and opportunities for continuous learning and development. Six commands provide a continuum of professional education and training at NETC in support of Surface Navy requirements prePhoto by Spc 1st Class Jesse Hawthorne paring enlisted sailors and officers to serve at sea, and providing apprentice and specialized skills training to 7,500 sailors a year. A significant amount of the United States’ prosperity is tied to our ability to operate freely on the world’s oceans. More than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water; 80 percent of the world’s population lives close to a coast; and 90 percent of all global trade by volume travels by sea. Collado plays an important role in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy. “Our priorities center on people, capabilities and processes, and will be achieved by our focus on speed, value, results and partnerships,” said Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer. “Readiness, lethality and modernization are the requirements driving these priorities.” Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community and career, Collado is most proud of receiving a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. “It was a testament of our team’s ability to repair necessary equipment onboard the ship so the sailors were able to complete their mission,” Collado said. Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Collado, who has military ties a family member who serves. Collado is honored to carry on the family tradition. “My brother serves in the military and it means a great deal to be serving with him,” Collado said. As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied-upon assets, Collado and other instructors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs. “Serving in the Navy means I’m vigorously supporting my country and I’m prepared to defend it against all enemies,” Collado said.

Local Sorority Chapter Presents Next Steps to College BY BEVERLY PERKINS

O

ver seventy Pembroke Pines and Miramar high school students and their parents gathered at the Walter C. Young Library at the close of the school year to learn about the next steps to college. Besides receiving an abundance of helpful information, the aspiring higher education students were also exposed to the “Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Experience” where they got to hear from HBCU college graduates. The successful event was organized by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority / Alpha Alpha Beta Omega Chapter. The ambitious sorority sisters wanted to provide an intimate and casual setting where students and parents could get the information they needed regarding college applications while they also promoted and raised awareness about HBCUs. They also wanted to inspire the local students to maximize their potential so they could be ready to take on future challenges. “It was such an important event because we wanted to connect students in the community with higher education professionals that will assist them with the college enrollment and application process. In addition, it’s extremely important for the students to understand that they have a plethora of options when

it comes to selecting a college or university especially when it comes to including HBCUs in the decision making process,” explained Sebrina Burkes-Taylor, event Co-Chair. The informative event began with a warm welcome parent-only session while an HBCU panel was availfrom Event Chair able for a Q & A segment for students. Pediatric Foot and Ankle Sprains May Be a More Complex Growth Plate Injury BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

I

njuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that will allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. X-rays can fail to provide a complete and accurate picture of the diagnosis. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present. Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of 13 and 18, can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of

the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone. Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating. X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary. Treatment options include: 1. Immobilization in a below-the-knee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the faster it heals.

2. If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Nonweightbearing would be mandatory. 3. If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked. The most important thing is immediate diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board-Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. He specializes in the treatment of infants, children, teens and adults with injuries, pain and deformities. BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS ear Readers, Once again, our memories return to that tragic and horrific time when we lost so many lives due to terrorism. On Wednesday, September 11, 2019, the City of Pembroke Pines, along with the rest of the country, will remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives during terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This day, known as Patriot Day or Nine-Eleven Day, is recognized by U.S. law as a National Day of Service and Remembrance and has been observed every year since that tragic day in 2001. I would like to invite everyone to attend a Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony, September 11, 2019, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Park adjacent to the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. The ceremony, which is free and open to all, will begin with the Presentation of Colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guards. It will also include guest speakers, community leaders and patriotic music featuring local school bands and area musicians. For more information regarding the City of Pembroke Pines observance of Patriot Day, please call 954-392-2116. Please be sure to mark your calendars and tell your friends about the 5th Annual Veterans 5:13 PM Employment Expo which will take place on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, located at 301 NW 103 Ave. The event will open to the public at noon. More than 50 employers and 15 service agencies are expected to participate in this year’s Veterans Employment Expo. If you are a veteran in need of a job, I strongly encourage you to attend. It’s a great opportunity to meet directly with hiring managers in our area, from a variety of companies and organizations. Here in Pembroke Pines, we appreciate the support our veterans have received from the business community, and we especially appreciate our veterans for their service. While we don’t like to think about it, September 10th marks the peak of our hurricane season. I encourage everyone to please be prepared and visit our city website at www.ppines.com/hurricane for information needed before a storm is on our doorstep. There are videos, resources, and information touching on all aspects of hurricane preparation, and what to do during and after a storm. As we are also in the time when snakes are most active in our area, I also urge you to visit www.ppines.com/snakesafety for information on how to remain safe and what to do should you be bitten by a snake. It’s incredibly important that our residents remain safe and are informed.

ASK THE SHERIFF

An Evolution in Community Policing BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY have dedicated my career in law enforcement to making a positive impact on the lives of the citizens in the community. Now, as sheriff, it is the foundation of how I run the Broward Sheriff’s Office. I have seen how small interactions with the public achieve huge safety results, so I have directed our deputies to get out of their squad cars, walk the streets and connect with people. These interactions go a long way toward building trust and respect, raising awareness and bridging any gaps that may exist. When we are more visible and hands-on, people feel more comfortable sharing concerns, providing helpful tips and ultimately contributing to a safer and brighter future for all. With this in mind, BSO is ready to take community policing to the next level. I’m excited to announce the launch of the Neighborhood Support Teams (NST), an innovative new initiative focused on further strengthening law enforcement and community relationships.

I

The NST, which will be comprised of law enforcement representatives, will work with various members of the community to develop a strong network of representation and involvement. This includes leaders, business stakeholders, faith-based institutions, school board officials, activists, mental health professionals, social workers, residents, youth groups and high school students. These individuals and groups are the eyes and ears of their neighborhoods. They have the pulse of the community, understand their strengths and weaknesses and provide an intimate perspective on the needs of their area beyond routine calls for service. The NST’s responsibilities are far-reaching and extend to every corner of the county. Our representatives will host monthly meetings with stakeholders to maintain engagement and continue to foster positive working relationships. In addition, they will play an active role in various community events, experiences and partnerships. Teams will provide numerous educational opportunities, including hosting public safety seminars and cultural diversity discussions, and providing education on other important topics, such as civilian rights pertaining to policing encounters and civilian active shooter response protocols. They will also help connect varied groups, including veterans, the elderly, individuals suffering from mental health problems and those struggling to put food on their table, with vital resources to help provide them with the assistance they need. And we are focusing on our youth through back-to-school initiatives and mentorship opportunities. To learn more about Neighborhood Support Teams, please visit us at sheriff.org/nst. SUCCESS = REWARD You can stay connected by following the sheriff on Twitter @BrowardSheriff or emailing him directly at ask_the_sheriff@sheriff.org. It’s Time to Review Your Estate Plan! BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE hings change. Despite all the time and thought that went into creating your will or trust, life happens. Often these changes affect your estate planning. If you don’t review and adjust your plan it may not achieve your desired results when you need it most. How often should I review my documents? We recommend reviewing your revocable living trust or will, along with your advance legal directives, at least every three years. This review is especially important if you experienced any major life changes since your documents were executed, including: ▸▸ New family members, or a loss of a loved one ▸▸ Child that has turned 18 or 21 ▸▸ A recently married or divorced beneficiary ▸▸ Beneficiary concerns, like financial, substance abuse or disabilities ▸▸ Creation, sale, or closing of a business ▸▸ Purchase of a new or second home, or an investment property ▸▸ Changes to your beneficiary or successor trustee designations ▸▸ Changes in your relationships with beneficiaries or successor trustees Can a change in the law affect my documents? Yes, very definitely. Let’s look at a common estate planning document, a durable power of attorney. Several years ago financial institutions lobbied the Florida legislature to change the applicable law to protect banks and brokerage firms from liability if a durable power of attorney is misused or forged. The new law suggests certain “magic” language which, if included in the durable power of attorney, provides this protection. If your document was drafted before 2011, it most likely does not contain this magic language. While some financial institutions may still accept your durable power of attorney, it is much more likely that they will not. Another change to the law, which took effect on October 1, 2015, affects your health care power of attorney. The Florida legislature has revised the law to clarify confusion surrounding when a health care power of attorney becomes effective. Your health care power of attorney can be effective immediately, but only if you so designate. If not, your treating physician must first determine that you are unable to manage your own care before they will take instruction from your designated agent. The new law also offers new choices in terms of designating a health care surrogate for a minor child. Because of this change in the law, there is new language that should be part of your health care power of attorney. How do I know if laws have changed that may affect my estate planning documents? The best way to is to contact your estate planning attorney and schedule a periodic review of your plan. Many attorneys provide maintenance programs and will affirmatively contact their clients if relevant laws change. While there is a fee to belong to a maintenance plan, there are usually no charges for required document updates. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

ASK THE EXPERT

Which Breast Surgery is right for you? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. Periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T”, or anchor incision same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold. All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed.

BY EVAN BARON eople are obsessed with planning: planning vacations, planning birthday parties, family reunions, and especially the ultimate party— their wedding day. Generally, people enjoy planning for things they deem fun and exciting. Seldomly, however, are people excited to plan for life events that are sad or devastating in nature. People don’t want to spend any of their time thinking about, let alone discussing, what happens when things go wrong. The saying goes, “if you fail to plan—you plan to fail”. This is why we have insurance policies. No one hopes to get into a car accident or experience a category 4 hurricane; but because the possibility exists, people safeguard against these events in an attempt to mitigate their exposure to losses. This thought process can also easily be applied to one of the happiest times in a person’s life—their wedding day. It is no secret that a high percentage of marriages end in divorce. Despite this knowledge, a very low percentage of couples choose to prepare a prenuptial agreement to safeguard themselves in the event of a contentious divorce. According to Florida Statute 61.079—”a premarital agreement is an agreement between prospective spouses made in contemplation PuzzleJunction.com of marriage to be effective upon marriage.” However, a premarital agreement only really becomes relevant in the event the couple initiates a divorce proceeding. Just like a car insurance policy cannot prevent an accident, a prenup will not prevent a divorce. What a prenup *can* do is protect couples from each other during a divorce. If given the choice—would you prefer negotiating terms with a friend, or would you rather do so with an adversary? Unfortunately, when going through a divorce—individuals become adversarial in nature. This results in an already difficult situation becoming even more difficult due to emotions being high, and rationale being low. This dynamic often results in never-ending litigation that takes an emotional and financial toll on everyone involved. Having a prenuptial agreement can serve as an insurance policy that’s in place to help avoid and/or minimize a couple’s damage if and when, they decide they no longer wish to remain married. Some important details about a premarital agreement are as follows: • The agreement must be in writing and signed by both parties; becoming effective once the marriage has taken place. • The agreement may address matters related to assets, property (tangible or intangible); details of spousal support or the complete waiver of such support; • Ownership rights in & disposition of death benefits from a life insurance policy; • The choice of law governing the construction of the agreement; • Any other matter relevant to the parties, so long as same is not in violation of Florida’s public policy or law. • Note: child related matters, such as child support, cannot be addressed within premarital agreements.

With a heart of gold, Gigi loves to go to the park right here in Pembroke Pines and enjoys her nights relaxing alongside her favorite human, her mom! She might be small but she is mighty! She was last seen getting a mani/pedi for her birthday! Her family and her brother Max love her so much
