Give Thanks and Look for the Good

I

n America, we traditionally take time to reflect on life during November. We think about our families, our community, our country and the people we love. We are thankful for all these things and more. It is sometimes difficult to reflect on the good things in life. We live in an era of constant communication and conflict. Many popular media outlets capitalize on the things that divide us. At Our City we focus on the things that bring us together. We publish news about our community with a decidedly positive voice. You won’t see any opinion columns written to demonize one group of people or another. We believe that 100 people pulling on a rope in the same direction can accomplish anything, while 50 people pulling on each end of a rope can accomplish nothing. Check out The Our City Dining Guide in this issue and on our website. It’s a selection of our staff’s favorite restaurants from around the area. These are some of the best places to host a holiday party, enjoy Thanksgiving dinner, or to grab a quick bite with friends after work. You could even visit one of these restaurants with the people you love for no reason other than to give thanks you have them in your life. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center Hosts Annual Thanksgiving Drive BY DEBBY TEICH

F

or millions of Americans, the Thanksgiving holiday is an opportunity to indulge in roasted turkey, buttery mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, while enjoying the company of friends and families. For those who are less fortunate, however, the holiday may take on a very different meaning. This month, the staff at the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center will host the 16th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to reach out to those in need of assistance. Through November 14, clubs, organizations or individuals can donate nonperishable canned and/or boxed foods, checks (no cash) or grocery store gift cards. Organizers are hoping to provide 100 Thanksgiving baskets and meals to families in Pembroke Pines. “Thanksgiving allows us all the opportunity to celebrate life, to

be with family and friends and to honor this country’s tradition to help those in need,” said Jay Shechter, Community Service Director. “It allows us to hope, to forgive, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. Let this year be the year that you give more than you receive and you help those who need help the most.” Students at City of Pembroke Pines

Charter Schools and private schools have already started collecting items for the Thanksgiving baskets. Some of the items include: stuffing, cranberry sauce, canned yams, flaked potatoes, gravy, canned corn, green beans, fruit, and desserts. The SWFP Community Center purchases the turkeys, and pies. Some members of the Empty

Bowls group, comprised of students from the Community Center’s day and evening Pottery Studio program, have also been raising money to help those in need. The Artists in Action donate their time, talent and supplies to help feed the “empty bowls” of the hungry. The proceeds from the sale of their pottery benefit the Community Center’s annual Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive. Names of the 100 families that will receive the baskets are submitted by departments within the city and charter schools that know of a family in need. Staff and volunteers will help distribute the baskets.

n Non-perishable items and food store gift cards (preferably from Publix, Walmart, Target) can be dropped off at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, 301 NW 103rd Avenue, in Pembroke Pines through November 14. For information, contact Carol Arango at 954-450-6888 or send an email to carango@ppines.com.

Your family doctor: The benefits of a primary care provider Cleveland Clinic Florida offers comprehensive primary care services for Weston and SW Broward families. As life changes, so do the healthcare needs for yourself and your loved ones. You may want to consider choosing a primary care physician – family medicine or internal medicine physician – who can be your partner in health and wellness. “We’re trained to provide comprehensive care for patients age six and up,” said Hermann Stubbe, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida family medicine Hermann Stubbe, MD physician who sees patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston Family Health Center. “We treat a variety of conditions – from allergies and ear infections to orthopaedic issues and women’s health.” Knows family history Many patients are unsure about health concerns and diseases in their family tree. Since a primary care physician often cares for a family from one generation to the next, they know the family’s medical history. “We often see grandparents, children and grandchildren. This aids in our ability to not only care for an individual, but to care for the family as a whole,” said Dr. Stubbe. No need for multiple physicians In most cases, family and internal medicine physicians can address multiple medical needs during an office visit or they can make referrals to the appropriate specialist(s), if necessary. “Over time, your primary care physician knows you well – including your health history, family history, and risk factors – so we can advocate Dunia Hernandez, MD for you and help you navigate the healthcare system,” explained Dr. Dunia Hernandez, a Cleveland Clinic Florida internal medicine physician who sees patients at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston main campus. Long-term, trusting relationships Patients are often too shy or embarrassed to talk about medical concerns or certain topics. “Since we have longstanding relationships with our patients, a degree of trust is established,” said Dr. Hernandez. It makes it easier to talk about issues when there’s a level of comfort and camaraderie.” To make an appointment with Dr. Stubbe, Dr. Hernandez or any other primary care physician at a convenient Cleveland Clinic Florida Weston location, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Appointment to make an appointment online. Winners of Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest Announced BY DEBBY TEICH

I

n a fire, seconds can mean the difference between escaping safely or having a life end in tragedy. To help reinforce this message, Pembroke Pines students in grades k-5th recently competed in the Pembroke Pines Fire Department’s 22st Annual Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest, which promoted Fire Prevention Week’s theme “Look. Listen. Learn. Be Aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” It was an opportunity for children to showcase their creative talents and get them thinking about fire safety at the same time. “The Fire Prevention Poster Contest is a great way to reinforce safety and the importance of identifying potential fire hazards in our homes,” said Sandra Lluis, Pembroke Pines Fire Marshal. “It teaches our children and their families to be aware of their surroundings and the steps that should be taken in the event of a fire, while allowing them to have fun and showcase their creative side.” This year’s campaign was aimed at educating people about three basic, but essential, steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire and how to escape safely in the event of one. PPTOPA Presents “Seussical the Musical” on Stage BY DEBBY TEICH

I

f you have always dreamed of seeing a Broadway show, the Pembroke Pines Theatre of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) can give you a taste of what it is like. It offers top-notch community theatre at an affordable price. Through November 18, “Seussical the Musical” will be on stage for several performances. Show times are Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2pm, at the Susan B. Katz Theatre. There is a Senior Matinee on November 10. “We invite everyone to come see this family-oriented show that appeals to audience members of all ages,” said Wendy Marrero, Vice President. Based on the children’s stories of Dr. Seuss and one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza. Tony winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime), have brought to life some of the most beloved Dr. Seuss characters in this production for all ages. The Pembroke Pines production includes Beverley Shanahan (Director), Del Marrero (Assistant Director/Choreographer), Anthony Campisi (Musical Director) and a talented cast. PPTOPA is the oldest continuously operating community theater in Broward County. It was founded in

1993 by a group of dedicated individuals who wanted to provide low cost, high quality live theater for the community, as well as opportunities for anyone interested in assisting in the creation of theater. While technically an “amateur” company, PPTOPA productions routinely feature some of the finest actors and actresses in South Florida. They are teachers, attorneys, doctors, business owners and others who volunteer their time to immerse themselves in something they love. Recent casts have included performers who have headlined productions at Stage Door, Curtain Call, Tamarac, and Actors Theaters. They have been on national Broadway tours, starred in Hollywood films, and written and produced their own plays. Many have been nominated and selected as recipients of South Florida’s Carbonell awards. PPTOPA presents four shows annually. The rest of the season includes: “The Mousetrap” (Winter 2019), “The Addams Family” (Spring 2019), and “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” (Summer 2019). With professional sets, backdrops, costumes and technical personnel, the 501(c)3 organization, raises money through donations and ticket sales.

American Heritage School Leads Country in National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists BY TERRY JAILLET

A

merican Heritage School (AHS), in Plantation, has the highest number of National Merit Semifinalists of any private school in the country. It is also has the more Semifinalists than any other high school in Florida for the 9th consecutive year. Seventy seniors at the school were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) this year. In fact, one in four of the Class of 2019 is a nation-

ally recognized scholar. “American Heritage has taught me you can be a big fish in a big pond, and you can get ahead and learn so much,” said AHS senior Eric Bazail. “The rigor that is expected of us, the collaborative aspect in all my classes and the incredible resources available at Heritage have helped me become much more knowledgeable and a better student.” The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.6 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/ NMSQT in their respective states. About half of the Semifinalists go on to win

scholarships. The NMSC will choose the winners of the $2,500 scholarships from the pool of finalists in the spring. Fourteen of the Semifinalists are residents of Pembroke Pines, including: • Luis Garcia • Sofia Godoy • Anjani Guda • Emily Irigoyen • Steven Keppinger • Ivan Li • Alvaro Lopez

• Alejandro Sosa Gil • Noah Teixeira • Saaketh Vedandam • Kevin Yeung • Lillian Acosta • Arnaldo Ferrebus • Chloe Laureano

American Heritage High School Principal, Elise Blum, commented, “It is quite an accomplishment to be among the top 1% of high school students in the entire nation, and I hope this recognition empowers them to keep exceeding the potential in college and in their future careers.” For more information about the National Merit Scholarship Program visit www.nationalmerit.org. Chesterbrook Academy Students Sell Lemonade to Benefit Children with Cancer

S

tudents at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool in Pembroke Pines are learning that when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. They recently set up a lemonade stand to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a national childhood cancer foundation dedicated to raising funds for research into new treatments and cures for all children battling cancer. The Pembroke Pines students raised $1,063 in what was a clear example of children helping children. “We wanted to give back to an important cause – research into new treatments and cures for all children battling cancer,” said Vivian Robles, Principal of Chesterbrook Academy Preschool in Pembroke Pines. More than 100 students participated in the effort. The students read books about what they were going to do and why. Each classroom created their own favorite lemonade recipe, and at the end of the week, the students voted to decide which recipe was their favorite. The classroom that received the most votes won a pizza party. The lemonade stand was set up in the school’s lobby for an entire week so families could purchase lemonade and other items while dropping

schools in Texas, Xplor Preschools. Collectively, they raised more than $25,000 for ALSF. For the past six years, Chesterbrook Academy in Pembroke Pines has been hosting a lemonade stand called Juliana’s Lemonade Stand from the Heart to raise money for children with heart conditions at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. This is the first time they partnered with other schools to raise money for ALSF. ALSF emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, ALSF, a registered 501(c)(3) charity, has raised more than $140 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 690 pediatric cancer research projects nationally.

Does Your Child Have Growing Pains Or Are They Just Flatfooted? BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

F

oot, ankle and leg problems in a growing child are also considered to be growing pains in the bones and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems including flat feet. Excessively flat feet or feet that point to the outside while walking or running are the primary causes. Many of these children are also knockkneed. They can also have tight muscles, especially the calf muscles, hamstrings and hips. Signs and symptoms include leg pain, especially at night. There is pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg bone, ankle and foot including the arch. They often have pre-

mature fatigue with activity and they avoid activities and sports. Lower back pain may also be felt. It is important for these kids to avoid going barefooted. Changing shoes to get more support will certainly help as will having an insole or a custom molded orthotic made to realign the foot and ankle. In most cases this will eliminate the pain overnight. Many of these kids have flat feet and tight calf muscles. In those cases, we stretch the calf muscles before we make an orthotic to give the calf muscle flexibility and the ankle better movement. When an orthotic is made the children are back to playing all sports and activities at a much higher level than before. The prognosis is almost always excellent. ASK THE MAYOR

Pembroke Pines Update BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS ecently, a letter was sent home to the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School parents and students from the City of Pembroke Pines Police Chief Dan Giustino reminding them the severity of making threats to do violence in a school. If a student uses any words, verbally, in writing, or via any social media account in a threatening manner that mention gun violence or any type of violence using a weapon or hurting someone, the police department is taking every threat seriously and is evaluating each threat to determine whether a crime has been committed. I strongly recommend that parents talk to their children and advise them on the life altering consequences these threats can have on their chances of getting accepted into college, joining the military and/or passing a background check for a potential career all because of a prank or joke. Reality has shown us that violence does occur in schools throughout the country, so law enforcement has an obligation to follow through on every threat. So, parents please make sure your children understand the seriousness and consequences of such threats. One fake threat is one too many. Threats are not jokes. On a happier note, I am pleased to report that the City of Pembroke Pines was the highest ranked city in Florida in the Wallet Hub report on 2018’s Best & Worst Cities to Raise a Family. Pembroke Pines was also the highest ranked city in Florida on Wallet Hub’s Hispanic Entrepreneurs list, ranking #6 out of 182 nationwide. I’m not surprised. We have a great city! We also have a very generous city. For the past 15 years, the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center has joined with schools, businesses and residents to gather donations for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. For the 100 families in the Pembroke Pines Community assisted by these donations, this program makes this holiday time very special. Thank you to all who donated. I hope to see everyone at this year’s Veterans Day Observance on Sunday, November 11, 2018, from noon until 2pm, at the Memorial Park, located at 601 City Center Way by the Charles F. Dodge City Center to honor our country’s veterans past and present. And, I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving.

ASK THE EXPERT

Making Sense of Breast Enhancement BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. They are: periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T,” or anchor incision, same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold. All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

Estate Planning Is A Team Sport More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.

BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE nvesting online at E-Trade or using Turbo Tax in lieu of a CPA for their tax returns, they believe they are saving time and not “wasting” money. Purchase insurance or an IRA without an agent? Easy to do. And through extensive marketing of sites such as Legal Zoom, you can now download a will, trust, and advance legal directives. Why hire someone when you can do it by yourself, for less? As inexpensive and efficient as these sources can be, they all lack a very important element: counseling. Estate planning and decisions regarding taxes, investments, insurance and disability are daunting and complex. Knowing what you don’t know is critical. One way to keep you on track as your world changes is to build a “team” of professionals who can offer real financial and legal counseling.

I

Who are the members of your team and how do you choose them?

Your team members may be a CPA, financial planner, attorney, banker, stockbroker and perhaps an insurance advisor. The first step in selecting a professional may be a recommendation by a friend, colleague or an existing member of your team. No matter who may refer you, it is important to do your own independent research. Schedule a consultation. Ask questions. Check qualifications. There is never a substitute for experience and competence, but also consider if this is someone you feel comfortable with. Your goal is a long-term relationship. When it comes to estate planning, a qualified estate planning attorney offers more than simply producing documents for your signature. Their value is in the counsel provided. While you can save money in the short term using an online service, or even an attorney who dabbles in estate planning, your heirs may be left to clean up mistakes that may have been made. Is that a risk you are willing to take?

Are there any other factors you should consider? One issue currently getting a lot of attention is the term “financial advisor,” commonly used by stockbrokers, insurance agents or someone who sells mutual funds or annuities. Actually, anyone can add that title to their name, and it does not make them an expert. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP), however, is a positive indicator that you will be provided with objective financial guidance. But even those with the CFP designation may not be a good fit for you. Do your research. A basic rule of estate planning is thinking about how your loved ones will handle their financial affairs after you are gone. Consider leaving behind a team to provide consistent, reliable and supportive counsel and advice to you now, and then to assist and guide your loved ones later. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Basic Issue of Divorce BY EVAN BARON t seems that Divorce is often misunderstood. Unfortunately, everyone seems to know someone who is either going through a divorce or has been divorced. Everyone has heard various “horror stories” about someone’s divorce case. Many people who come to my office for a consultation are lost or confused as to what may lie ahead. A common question is “how do I start this?” Even though every case is obviously different from the next, most cases deal with the same general issues one might encounter in a divorce. I thought it might be helpful to briefly touch upon each one of these. Equitable Distribution This is the principle by which assets accumulated and debts incurred during the marriage are divided. In most cases, the division will be an equal division of both assets and debts. This, however, is not always true. Florida Statutes allow a Judge to consider various factors in determining the possibility of an unequal distribution. In addition, non-marital assets (assets owned prior to the marriage or received from a source unconnected with the marriage; such as an inheritance) will not be divided unless these assets were co-mingled with marital assets or gifted to the other spouse. Alimony Alimony is not an issue in every case. There are a number of factors which must be considered in addressing alimony. There are several different kinds of alimonywhich are contained within the law. The one most people think of is “permanent alimony,” which is a sum of money paid on a monthly income until death or remarriage by the receiving spouse. This is based upon, among other factors, length of marriage, lifestyle of the parties and need and ability. There are, however, other forms of alimony which can be addressed. These are usually for a specific time period, with a beginning and ending date. These payments can be classified under Rehabilitative Alimony (a sum of money to allow a spouse to further his/her education or training), “Bridge the Gap Alimony” (a sum of money paid monthly for a term of months or years) or Lump Sum Alimony (a lump sum payment). Child Support Child Support is to be paid by the parent who has the lesser amount of time sharing to the parent who has the greater amount of time sharing, based upon the “net” income of both parties and the Child Support Guidelines. Day care, after school care and health insurance costs for the minor children are additional. Child Support in Florida ends when a child turns 18, or if he/she has not yet graduated from high school. It can continue until either graduation or the child’s 19th birthday. Neither parent has a legal obligation to support a child after graduation from high school. There is, therefore, no legal basis to request child support to assist for a college education. If, however, either parent agrees to assist a child through college and it is contained within a written settlement agreement, such a provision is enforceable through the courts. The above are some issues which generally arise in a divorce/dissolution case. It is not all inclusive and as stated before, each case is different. If you have any questions about your rights and or obligations please give my office a call to schedule a free consultation

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Get Protection and Peace of Mind at South Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

hether you are looking for a fun new sport or hobby, an exciting idea for your next date night, or peace of mind protection for yourself and your family, Nexus Shooting can assist multiple needs. The unique state-of-the-art facility is one of the world’s most advanced gun store and range. The facility features Nexus Lanes, a live fire digital video targeting system which creates a unique training environment. Their friendly and professional staff is available to assist and make each guest feel safe and comfortable. Instructors teach new techniques while always promoting safety and new defensive techniques. Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licensing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional. We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus. How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds. Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning! I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are gun ranges and stores frequently

dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues. How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? We spared no expense on our ventilation system. The ranges are air conditioned with a milliondollar military grade filtration system, allowing our members to shoot in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside. The air is HEPA filtered and exceeds all OSHA regulations. You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot in complete safety and privacy. How has Nexus made shooting more fun? Since the gun’s invention, we’ve been making holes in paper targets which is boring and not great training. My brother and partner in Nexus, Michael Hsiao, has a background in programming. We leveraged his expertise to make shooting more exciting through technology. Thus, our advanced virtual range, the Nexus Lanes, was born. You shoot

your actual gun and real ammo at interactive video targets, like zombie games, skill drills, asteroids, etc. The computer provides instant feedback, scoring and analyzing each shot. We also have a standard paper target range for those that prefer a traditional experience. Seems like a great partnership. Was it just you and your brother that started Nexus? Our third partner, Christopher Longsworth, brought the final piece of the puzzle with his background in real estate development and architecture. All the projects in his portfolio are highly regarded as being at the cutting edge of modern architecture, such as Strata at Plantation, and Koi Marina and Residences in Pompano. It was through his vision that the striking architectural design of the building and high-end retail showroom came to fruition. Our guests call our showroom the “Apple Store” or “Guggenheim Museum” of gun stores

because of the spacious, clean and welcoming environment. What else distinguishes Nexus? It’s really the experience we offer. Shooting is the “new bowling”, a family friendly activity. We’re not here to just sell guns. Nexus is the only five-star range in South Florida rated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. We received this prestigious award by providing an unparalleled shooting and shopping experience, as well as superb customer service. We carry one of the largest inventories in the country with thousands of guns in stock. We also have hundreds of rental guns, so you can try before you buy. Our training program is also extremely comprehensive. Our instructors can train anyone including someone who has never touched a gun before to experienced shooters, security personnel, and even law enforcement. We focus on the needs of female shooters too. Half of our staff is female, including our store manager. We have female instructors also. Nexus seems very high end. Is it expensive to shoot there? That’s a common misconception. Even though we are a five-star range and offer the highest level of amenities and quality, we aren’t even the most expensive range in Broward County. It’s like driving a Ferrari for the price of a Toyota! n Nexus Shooting is located at 2600 Davie Road in Davie. Hours of operation are MondayFriday from 10am - 10pm; Saturday from 9am to 10pm; and Sunday from 9am-8pm. For more information, please call 954-587-8005; send an email to info@nexusshooting.com or visit www.NexusShooting.com.
