T

hanksgiving has grown to mean so many different things in America. It, of course, started as a somber day to give thanks for all that we have and to celebrate a bountiful harvest. Tradition suggests that the American holiday commemorates a turkey dinner shared by English Pilgrims and members of the Wampanoag tribe somewhere near Cape Cod in 1621. While the historical accuracy of this story may be hard to determine, the underlying message is worth remembering. Giving thanks often gets overlooked these days. Our always-on, always-connected and increasingly adversarial culture becomes consuming. We see young people glued to their phones, older folks angry about the latest political developments on cable news, and parents frustrated and tired, stretched thin between work, kids’ activities and more. For these reasons, it’s more important than ever to spend time with family, friends and neighbors. Giving thanks and sharing with our loved ones and neighbors is really what the holiday is all about. There are few groups in history more distinctly different than 15th-century English religious refugees and Native Americans. Yet, they could sit down together for a meal and give thanks for all they had. Maybe we should do the same.

…And The Storybook Festival Continues to Live Happily Ever After! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

O

nce upon a time, a group of southwest Broward County residents requested that a scaled-down version of the Children’s Reading Festival be created in their area. And so, the widely popular and largest festival held at the Main Library in Ft. Lauderdale during National Children’s Book Week was renamed the Storybook Festival and unveiled in 2002 at the Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines. Visitors can expect storytellers, storybook characters, entertainers, and multiple performances, including one from The City of Pembroke Pines Charter High School Marching Band. Children are encouraged to come to the festival dressed in costume and participate

in the Storybook Parade. The free one-day event will engage young ones and adults alike as they wander through the Fantasy Forest interacting with their favorite storybook characters and enjoying the ‘Swappin” Ground” where they can listen to stories and tell their own. The 2019 Storybook Festival will focus on visual literacy. Graphic novels, including comic books, hybrid books, manga, anime, and cartoons will be featured. These types of books develop thinking skills and comprehension while promoting literacy among young, reluctant, and dyslexic readers. This year the author and illustrator of the CatStronauts series, Drew Brockington, will be one of the

special guests. “This is a wonderful event that encourages children to read and nurture a love of books and stories that will stay with them their entire life,” said Commissioner Tom Good. “I invite everyone to come out and have fun, let their imaginations come alive, and spend the day enjoying all the exciting activities being offered.” The first 1,000 children to arrive will receive a free book. All children can get the face painted for free while parents can snap photos at all the “official” Storybook Photo Spots. Food trucks will be on-site selling delicious treats, local authors will be signing books, and arts and crafts vendors will showcase their wares.

The anticipated event continues to draw thousands through funds by the Broward Public Library Foundation and the support from the City of Pembroke Pines as well as its generous sponsors: the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, the Children’s Services Council of Broward County and the Friends of Southwest Regional Library and Broward Family Life magazine. n The 18th Annual Storybook Festival, hosted by The Broward County Public Library Foundation in partnership with the City of Pembroke Pines, will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Southwest Regional Library, located at 16835 Sheridan Street. For questions or additional information, please call 954-357-6580.

embroke Pines’ Preston C. Howell secured a spot on the 17th season of NBC’s “The Voice.” On October 1st, Preston sang “Dream a Little Dream of Me” by The Mamas & The Papas during a blind audition on the TV show. He earned a rare, almost immediate, four-chair turn and then a standing ovation from the show’s celebrity coaches. During the blind auditions, the celebrity coaches listen to contestants without seeing them. Coaches then compete for top contestants by spinning their chairs around, indicating their desire

I hope you pick me.” John Legend proclaimed, “Most of the time this show is about fireworks and big riffs and big runs, but you said, ‘I’m gonna do a standard and I’m just gonna sound beautiful doing it.’ The whole idea that you could come out here and do this at your age, to do a song that most people wouldn’t have the cojones to do is such an audacious undertaking. A lot of people know I love the kind of music that you did.”

Recently he started singing in a local pop group, Miami Squadz, which performs at community and charity events. Preston loves to give back to the community with this pop group. In September they performed for special needs kids at a Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital family resource fair. Preston is a sophomore in high

Finally, Blake Shelton pitched, “Your voice is timeless. You’re either born with that or you’re not. And, you were born with that (voice) not very long ago. When you can do what you just did and get all four of us to turn around, congratulations. I’d be honored to be your coach.” As Preston chose his coach, he paused and quietly said, “I pick, I gotta pick John,” securing himself a spot on Team Legend. Preston is the youngest contestant Legend has coached while on The Voice. Preston has always loved music. He grew up singing jazz with his dad. He loves listening to the standards and enjoys dancing while performing. He started performing in choir and joined the Broadway Kids theater group at eight years old. He later joined

Each of the coaches vyed to have Preston on his/her team. They were astounded by Preston’s young age (14). Gwen Steffani was in awe. She said, “How is it you are fourteen and your voice sounds like that? When I turned around, you didn’t look like your voice was coming out of your body… We all would die to have you on our team. I would really love to work with you.” Kelly Clarkson gushed, “What I love most about you, Preston, is that you didn’t imitate. Yes, you obviously have that influence, that big band sound, but

Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation Fundraiser Celebrates 20-Year Partnership with NSU BY CHRISTY JAILLET

Guy Havey and his foundation, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF) will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the NSU Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) during the foundation’s annual ocean conservation fundraising dinner at the Marriott Harbor Beach in Fort Lauderdale, on November 2nd. It will also honor Nova Southeastern University’s President and CEO Dr. George L. Hanbury II at the event. “This year is particularly special, as we honor both Dr. Hanbury and the incredible scientists and groundbreaking research at GHRI,” said Dr. Guy Harvey.

The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, whose world headquarters is located in Davie, conducts scientific research and sponsors educational programs aimed at conserving our oceans. The foundation wants to ensure that future generations can enjoy and benefit from a naturally balanced ocean ecosystem. It also funds oceanic research and educational programs that target the next generation of marine conservationists. Guy Harvey, the foundation’s namesake, is a unique blend of artist, scientist, diver, angler, conservationist, and explorer. He is best known for his iconic artwork depicting sea-life. His sportfish depictions are popular with fishermen and can be found on t-shirts, posters and even cruise ships around the world. Guy is a 10th generation Jamaican and grew up in and around the ocean. His childhood passion for the ocean fueled a burning interest that prompted a formal education in marine science. Guy graduated, with honors, from Aberdeen University in Scotland in 1977 with a degree in Marine Biology. After leaving university, he returned home to Jamaica and resumed his education, earning a Ph.D. from the

University of the West Indies in 1984. Since then, Guy has continued his relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries of the sea. He travels the world to better understand the habits and habitats of the marine wildlife he paints. Nova Southeastern University has a long-standing relationship with Harvey, who helped fund its Oceanographic Center, which bears his name. Harvey said of Dr. Hanbury “We are on a transformational journey together to protect our ocean ecosystem and conserve our marine environment.” Two great guys doing fabulous things for our oceans right in our backyard. Congratulations Dr. George L. Hanbury! Tickets to the Banquet are $300 per person and $2,500 for a table of 10. Guests will enjoy dinner, open bar, live musical entertainment, a video retrospective of the exciting ocean expeditions and research findings from 2019 and a live and silent auction with original Guy Harvey artwork For more info on Guy Harvey Foundation or to buy tickets email GHOF@GuyHarvey.com or visit www.GHOF.com. Brain Health 101:

Do you have a loved one with dementia? Are you concerned about your own brain health? Dr. Raymond Ownby, Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Nova Southeastern University, will address these concerns and provide multiple strategies to help prevent cognitive decline and dementia.

Join us

for this free event

With the failure of trial after trial of dementia medications, it has become clear to healthcare professionals that we should emphasize Brain Health as a way to prevent cognitive decline and dementia. From dietary supplements to specific diets to “brain training” websites and apps, the abundance of information is not only confusing, but often conflicting. In this presentation, Dr. Ownby will review what we know about cognitive decline and brain aging, what strategies are supported by good scientific evidence and discuss a model that can help people make sense of their brain health.

Pembroke Pines Girl Scout Earns Girl Scouts’ Highest Honor BY JON DUKA

Kai Zaragoza, a member of Girl Scout Troop 10800 in Pembroke Pines, has earned the Girl Scouts’ Highest Honor: she is a 2019 National Gold Award Girl Scout. The annual award is given to ten girls from across the country. Winners are recognized for creating innovated and sustainable solutions to today’s more pressing issues. Kai was honored for creating an orchestra program at Lauderdale Lakes Middle School. Music education has been shown to improve students’ academic and social-emotional growth. Unfortunately, Kai noticed music education was rare in Broward County. This led her to take action, creating an orchestra program for low-income minority students at Lauderdale Lakes Middle School. To ensure no one was left out of her program, Kai even fitted a prosthetic hand to a violin to enable a student without a left hand to play it. Kai presented results to the school board about the positive impact on the students. The school is now offering orchestra for the first time as an official class. “Girl Scouts like Kai make the world a better place every day and will continue to defy expectations and act as bold advocates for a brighter future,” said Lisa Johnson, CEO of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida. “Kai and her fellow National Gold Award Girl Scouts are

of this year’s Gold Award Girl Scouts nationwide for their extraordinary leadership and ability to develop lasting solutions—and achieve remarkable results—for critical issues in their communities and beyond. Girl Scouts who earn the Gold Award not only change the world for the better, they change it for good. “This year’s National Gold Award Girl Scouts have truly distinguished themselves as visionary leaders,” said GSUSA CEO Sylvia Acevedo. “In a time when an increasing number of young people are using their voices to come together and take action, these girls stand out. They have made an incredible impact on the worlds of STEM, education, agriculture, the environment, civil rights, and beyond. While they are making the world a better place, they are also investing in themselves. We’re proud to support Girl Scouts across the country as they drive meaningful and lasting change in their communities and beyond.”

ook your tickets for this spectacular extravaganza. This fabulous production is always a sell-out. The Nutcraker, best-loved holiday classic, wows young and old with its delightful tale, unforgettable classical music score by P. Tchaikovsky, and magnificent dancing. The story tells of a young girl who falls deeply in love with the nutcracker doll given to her by her grandfather, the mysterious magician, Dr. Drosselmyer. The party with family and friends is enjoyed by everyone. Marie tries to protect her beloved toy from her jealous brother but, alas, the evening is horribly spoiled by his actions. Scary mice appear at midnight and a battle ensues between a Giant Rat King and the Nutcracker. Incredibly, her beloved toy comes to life as the handsome Cavalier Prince, and they are transported through the glittering snow to the Kingdom of the Sweets. Together, Marie and her beau meet the royalty of the Land who reappear as the Dewdrop and her flowers and crown her as their beloved leader. The Grande Pas de Deux transforms Marie into the mystical Sugar Plum Fairy as her handsome Prince leads her in dance. The captivated audience is left asking the question, “Was this really all a dream?” Each performance showers the audience with joy and lifts the spirits of all.

Heel Pain In Children BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

D

oes your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. It occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children. What are the causes? Calcaneal Apophysitis can be caused by a growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel; overactivity in children commonly between the ages of eight and 14; tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscle; flatfeet; poor shoe gear or walking barefoot; and growth spurts. What are the symptoms? Symptoms of this condition include: discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity; occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle; stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running; pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity; and pain that is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity or sits for a period of time and then tries to get up and walk. What are the signs? Parents should pay attention for the following signs their child might display: ten-

derness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel; walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground; discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel; limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens. What can be done to treat this? Treatment recommendations may include: modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot; rest and ice; stretching exercises; proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel; night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament; taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone; custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment; occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing; and physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate. HEALTH AND WELLNESS

What is the Value of Your Health? BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP

T

ypically, this is not something we think about until our health is negatively impacted and affecting our quality of life. The truth is more than anything else- finance, relationships, material items … health is everything. Without health, we cannot live the quality of life we had intended. How many of us take for granted our health status? And do we really know how we measure up? Without a Functional Medicine approach, you really are missing the boat. Functional Medicine’s goal is to optimize health and prevent bad things from happening not merely being reactive to and managing chronic illness. Most providers of traditional medicines have a focus that is very different as they are reactive to illness and then pile on one medicine after another to treat and manage the symptoms. They rarely have a game plan of weaning you off any medicine they have started. Often times, this approach leads to a piling of medications that simply treat the side effects of the original medication that was administered. The question to ask is … Are you really better with this approach to medicine? Did this really treat your original complaints properly? Or has a band-aid been placed on the item of concern to manage the symptom and not the root cause? I have great news – Functional Medicine is all about prevention and finding the root cause of illness. It is a medicine that uses natural medical grade nutracueticals to correct the deficiencies that may be the root cause of your illness and thus impacting your overall quality of life. In our practice we have had much success in the treatment of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol with management solely on re-creating balance of hormones, life- style and medical grade nutraceuticals through our patented program of Opti-Life. Our goal is to optimize your health and quality of life. So again, how do you measure up? This is where functional medicine shines. Functional medicine uses more stringent parameters when assessing your labs not the regular bell curve which takes into account, 20% of the population which is really sick when coming up with the quote on quote normal range. The Functional Medicine interpretation of the labs is essential to optimization. Using a narrower criteria of “normal” and being aggressive with a corrective plan of care is crucial is preventing health care disasters. For instance, the onset of diabetes and many other chronic health ailments have laboratory signs that were not optimal prior to the progression of diagnosis. Our goal is to prevent these diagnosis’. If you already have a diagnosis and are currently being treated – how is your report card of labs. Are you in the best percentile of the range? If not, then what are you really treating? What is the value of your health and are you ready to find out how you measure up? Let us help you on your journey to Health Optimization. n Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954.384.8989.   Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Being Thankful and Going the Extra Mile It’s always a big night when you have this little blue pill.

50 Generic Viagra pills for only $2/pill

1-888-679-5797

BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS

W

e started this month off on a positive note with “Extra Mile Day” on November 1, 2019. This significant day recognizes that all people can create positive change in themselves, families, organizations and communities by going the extra mile in their lives. I know that as Mayor of our great City of Pembroke Pines, it is always my goal to go the extra mile for our residents and businesses. I encourage everyone to go the extra mile in their pursuit of dreams and in their lives by also adding volunteerism and service to help our communities. I am proud to say that we are a very generous city, especially at this time of year. For the past sixteen years, the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center, located at 301 NW 103 Ave., has joined together with schools, businesses and residents, to gather donations for the “Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive”. This program makes this holiday time very special for onehundred families in the Pembroke Pines Community who are assisted by these donations,

The donations provide qualifying families with generously filled bins of non-perishable foods (canned and dried), turkeys, and much more to ensure a bountiful holiday meal. Donations must be in no later than Thursday, November 15, 2019, and can be dropped off at the Center. For more information, please call 954-450-6888. On a more somber note, in recent months we have had an increase in the number of vehicle burglaries, especially when vehicle doors have been left unlocked. Before leaving your vehicles unattended, please remember to lock your doors and ensure that all items of value are removed (including firearms, spare keys and garage openers). In addition, to deter home thefts, please close your garage doors, and make sure that your doors are locked. Leaving porch or patio lights on is an additional way to discourage would-be thieves. Please report any suspicious person(s) or vehicle(s) to the police before alerting security. The faster the officers can arrive to your area, the easier it will be to locate criminals who may be lurking in your area. I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving! Mayor Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

ASK THE SHERIFF

Celebrating Our Diversity BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY t the Broward Sheriff’s Office, we’ve come so far since the first African American, Deputy James Primous, joined the ranks in 1951. We’ve made great strides in diversifying the agency at every level to reflect Broward’s vibrant melting pot. As a person who has experienced inequality firsthand, I understand the importance of diversity in public safety. In order to serve Broward citizens to the best of our abilities, we must mirror our communities. Failure to do so — a problem public safety agencies have historically faced — often leads to avoidable consequences, including a lack of understanding, communication and, ultimately, distrust. I believe what makes us different as individuals make us more complete as a whole. And I am committed to making our entire agency more reflective of Broward County. I have increased the hiring of minority deputies and firefighters, two areas where minorities have been underrepresented in the past. Today, more than 60 percent of the agency is comprised of minorities — greater than the percentage of Broward as a whole. More than 40 percent are African American; in addition, nearly 20 percent are Hispanic. BSO also proudly employs many strong, dedicated women — who have made up more than half of our recent promotions — and people from a diverse set of religious beliefs and sexual orientations throughout the agency. We’re accomplishing all this through a variety of means, from greater outreach to communities that have been underrepresented in the past to the creation of new initiatives, mentorship and scholarship programs that reach our youth and promote careers in public safety. BSO now has the most diverse command staff in the agency’s 104-year history. Recently, I had the distinct honor of promoting Colonel Nichole Anderson as the first African American and the first woman to serve as undersheriff in the agency. I have also had the pleasure of naming BSO’s first two colonels of Cuban descent, Colonel Oscar Llerena and Colonel James Reyes. Make no mistake, however. These leaders are not in their positions because of the color of their skin, gender, religion or sexual identity. They were promoted because of their qualifications. Collectively, they have devoted decades of selfless and dignified service to BSO and the citizens of this great county. When I became sheriff, I promised to do what was best for the agency and bring forth the best personnel to keep our communities safe. We have so many talented people in this agency, and so many are worthy of positions of leadership. What I have done is simply level the playing field for everyone and provide qualified individuals an opportunity to rise to the top. As always, we are looking for good men and women to join our team. If you think you have what it takes, visit us at jobs.sheriff.org.

Life Can Change in an Instant BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE ll too frequently we are reminded that even the happiest of times can turn to despair in the blink of an eye. Perhaps it’s learning that your best friend suffered a massive heart attack or receiving a call that your cousin was killed by a drunk driver. In today’s world, there are too many tragedies highlighting life’s fragility. Whether in our own Parkland backyard, a nightclub in Orlando, an elementary school in Newtown, a WalMart parking lot in El Paso, a church in Charleston or a country music festival in Las Vegas, we are forced over and over again to face the reality that life can change in an instant. What all of these events have in common is that left behind were devastated families, friends and communities. Innocent people, just living their lives, had no idea their souls would be leaving this earth. We can agree that life does not always go the way you expected. Plans put off until later, may never happen. As an attorney specializing in wills and trusts, I see first hand what may happen to a family after an unexpected death. During a very emotional time, a grieving family is left to clean up a legal and financial mess left behind. To prevent this, I strongly recommend consulting with a qualified estate planning attorney to create an estate plan to take care of your family and assets after you are gone. But as a caring and responsible parent or spouse, there are things you should think about and take care of now. Let’s start with your minor children. Have you thought about who will care for them if you are not around? What about financial support? Do you know if you have the right amount, and the right type, of life insurance for your particular family needs? What about college? How will that be paid for? Do you help look after or support your parents? What will happen to them if you are not around? Now, think for a moment about what your final wishes for your family might be. How do you want to leave assets to your heirs? Are there charities you wish to contribute to? Who will inherit your business and real estate? There are many other questions to consider. Perhaps the lesson to be learned from tragedy is to always try to live a good life full of kindness and gratitude, and to remember to love and cherish our families and friends every day. The reality is that we do not know what the future holds. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

The Basic Issues Of Divorce BY EVAN BARON t seems that DIVORCE is often misunderstood. Unfortunately everyone seems to know someone who is either going through a divorce or has been divorced. Everyone has heard various “horror stories” about someone’s divorce case. Many people who come to my office for a consultation are lost or confused as to what may lie ahead. A common question is “how do I start this?” Even though every case is obviously different from the next, most cases deal with the same general issues one might encounter in a divorce. I thought it might be helpful to briefly touch upon each one of these. 1. Equitable Distribution: This is the principle by which assets accumulated and debts incurred during the marriage are divided. In most cases the division will be an equal division of both assets and debts. This however is not always true. Florida Statutes allows a Judge to consider various factors in determining the possibility of an unequal distribution. In addition, non marital assets (assets owned prior to the marriage or received from a source unconnected with the marriage; such as an inheritance) will not be divided unless these assets were co-mingled with marital assets or gifted to the other spouse. 2. Alimony: Alimony is not an issue in every case. There are a number of factors which must be considered in addressing alimony. There are several different kinds of alimony which are contained within the law. The one most people think of is “permanent alimony”, which is a sum of money paid on a monthly income until death or remarriage by the receiving spouse. This is based upon, among other factors, length of marriage, lifestyle of the parties and need and ability. There are however other forms of alimony which can be addressed. These are usually for a specific time period, with a beginning and ending date. These payments can be classified under Rehabilitative Alimony (a sum of money to allow a spouse to further his/her education or training), “Bridge the Gap Alimony” (a sum of money paid monthly for a term of months or years) or Lump Sum Alimony (a lump sum payment). 3. Child Support: To be paid by the parent who has the lesser amount of time sharing to the parent who has the greater amount of time sharing, based upon the “net” income of both parties and the Child Support Guidelines. Day care, after school care and health insurance costs for the minor children are additional. Child Support in Florida ends when a child turns 18, or if he/she has not yet graduated from High School, it can continue until either graduation or the child’s 19th birthday. Neither parent has a legal obligation to support a child after graduation from High School. There is therefore, no legal basis to request child support to assist for a college education. If however, either parent agrees to assist a child through college and it is contained within a written settlement agreement, such a provision is enforceable through the courts. The above are some issues which generally arise in a divorce/dissolution case. It is not all inclusive and as stated before, each case is different. If you have any questions about your rights and or obligations please give my office a call to schedule a free consultation.

ASK THE EXPERT

Choosing A Plastic Surgeon BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

P

Call Mariem Garcia For Advertising Information 954-326-0409

rospective patients often ask, “who should I go to for my cosmetic surgery procedure?” This question, if answered correctly, can make the difference between a beautiful result or a disastrous complication. All too often, in South Florida, patients will choose their cosmetic surgeon based on price. This is the biggest mistake most people make. The first question a prospective patient should be asking is, is my doctor board certified in Plastic Surgery? Many doctors are board certified, but don’t always state which field of medicine they are certified in. You should trust your care for cosmetic surgery only to a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association to certify physicians in over 24 medical specialties. The easiest way to check a doctor’s credentials is to go to www.abms.org to determine which medical specialty they are board certified in. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is not a recognized board by the ABMS. Equally important is that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These societies require not only board certification, but also documented experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients should also know how much experience a surgeon has in the procedure you are requesting. If you are interested in a breast augmentation, ask your doctor how many he or she does a week, a year. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to do the same procedure? Many physicians who perform liposuction in office facilities don’t have hospital privileges to do these procedures. Hospitals will only grant operative privileges to physicians with well-documented training in that procedure. The procedure should be performed in an accredited facility like our office which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilites, Inc. (AAAASF) or a licensed accredited hospital or outpatient surgery center. A common misconception is that office surgery is not as safe as hospital surgery. This is not true. The safety of a procedure is dependent on the credentials of the surgeon, accreditation of the facility, and the presence of a board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist. Many surgeons will tell prospective patients that they only perform surgery in a hospital setting because it is safer. These surgeons usually don’t have an office that is properly equipped or certified for outpatient surgery. I, like many other experienced board certified plastic surgeons, offer patients a choice to have surgery in our certified private office facility or the hospital depending on the overall medical conditions and the procedure being performed. Finally, assuming the physician has all the appropriate credentials and level of expertise, I stress the patient choose a surgeon with whom you feel most comfortable, who has a kind, attentive staff, in an environment where you can get the best care. Ask for patient referrals and patient testimonials. n Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.
