Hurricane Season is Here Again
2
017 was, by far, the costliest hurricane season in United States history. More than $282 billion of damages were caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Many of us in South Florida are still feeling the impacts of Hurricane Irma. The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, especially in Puerto Rico, will have long consequences. Fortunately, 2018 is expected to be less active than 2017. Colorado State University hurricane researchers predict the 2018 hurricane season to be slightly more active than normal, with a predicted 14 named storms in the Atlantic basin. This is a far cry from last year’s two and half times more active environment.
It Only Takes One Storm According to the Tropical Cyclone Landfall Probabilities tool developed by researchers from Bridgewater State University and Colorado State, Broward County has about a 35% chance of having a hurricane make landfall this year and about a one in five chance of a major hurricane making landfall. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ▸▸ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ▸▸ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information and water. ▸▸ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in the case you lose power and water supply. ▸▸ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed. Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer. Sincerely,
Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

“Violin Kids Play for Kids” Introduces Families to Classical Music BY DEBBY TEICH
O
n June 16, families will have an opportunity to introduce their children to the world of classical music during “Violin Kids Play for Kids.” Violinists from the Suzuki Music Academy will perform during a kidfriendly interactive program for children of all ages. The performance will take place at 2pm, at Southwest Regional Library Auditorium, 16835 Sheridan Street, in Pembroke Pines. Admission is free. During the concert, a group of 20 musicians, who range in age from 3 to 14, will play classical favorites by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. They will take the audience on a musical journey from the 18th century to the present with a program that includes interactive songs and musical games. “Wherever we play, parents, librarians, and teachers, are astonished by the enthusiastic receptions we get from children of all ages.” said Richard Coff, Academy Director. “Even toddlers and infants are remarkably engaged by and attentive to the performances by the children musicians in our ‘Violin Kids Play for Kids’ presentations! It seems that children tend to be most interested in seeing other kids who are able to demonstrate exceptional musical skill and poise.” For more than 30 years, the Suzuki Music Academy has been using the Suzuki Method, which is recognized by musicians and music educators as an effective way to provide formal classical music training to even the young-

est children. The children that train at the Academy meet for classes one or more days per week. They also work daily with practice and checkups at home. Nadine Louissaint’s two children – Isabelle, 15, and Dianne, 12 - have been playing the violin for six years. “The girls have learned that, with training and the commitment to practice, much can be accomplished,” said Louissaint. “They can now play beautifully and get real enjoyment when playing music and joining with other kids in concerts and for other events.” Larry and Marlene Suonare’s son, Lorenzo, 12, has been playing violin for nearly six years. “It’s been great to see Lorenzo’s progress from the time when he began study to the point where he is now,” said Larry Suonare. “He is able to play music by Brahms and Beethoven and many other classical composers. He really enjoys playing and seems to get a real feeling of accomplishment when learning new pieces and learning new and advanced violin techniques.” Winnie Irizarry’s son, Calvin, 5, has been playing violin for almost three years. “Calvin loves his violin,” said Irizarry. “He knows that playing the violin is something special that he can do and that not every 5-year-old can do. He likes playing for family and friends. Like the other kids in the program, he thinks it’s really great to play in concerts and for other children at the schools and libraries that the kids visit during the year.” For information, call 954-357-6733 or 954-797-7777.

yra Camino of Pembroke Pines has been a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Florida for more than 12 years. In a unanimous decision, the organization recently selected Camino as Big of the Year for the State of Florida for her commitment to her mentoring relationship. Camino was chosen from 15,000 mentors statewide. She is now in contention for the National Big of the Year awarded by Big Brother Big Sisters of America. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The organization partners with parents, guardians, volunteers and others in the Big Sister Myra Camino with Little Sister Saleen community and holds itself accountable for each child in its program achieving: higher aspirations, she had stage-three breast cancer that had spread to greater confidence, better relationships, educational her lymph nodes. In spite of dealing with aggressive treatment, medications and doctors, Camino has maintained a fully-committed, caring relationship with her 11-year-old Little Sister Saleen, who is her third Little Sister. Camino has been matched with Saleen for five years. Their special bond started when Saleen was six years old, the year Saleen lost her father. Though deeply saddened, Saleen worked through the trauma with Myra’s help. “She has a quiet strength, and the loss of her dad didn’t stop her,” said Camino. “She’s an overcomer, although she hasn’t yet realized how strong she is.” Camino, who is well known for her positive attitude, takes care of her two young boys and husband. She works part time at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward as a client advancement coordinator, is an active community ambassador, and supports the organization financially, despite towering medical bills. “She looks to the future and celebrates life with a broad smile, positive attitude and contagious enthusiasm,” said Ana Cedeno, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County. “The disease didn’t get the best of Myra – or the best of her match with Saleen. She was and still is committed to the match, in spite of the scary diagnosis and surrounding circumstances.”

ast year, there were an estimated 1.7 million new cancer cases diagnosed and nearly 600,000 cancer deaths in the United States. Area residents that have been touched by cancer recently gathered on the track at Walter C Young Middle School for the 20th Annual Relay For Life of Pembroke Pines, hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines and the American Cancer Society. This year’s theme was “20 Years of Hope.” “The City of Pembroke Pines strives to have healthy residents,” said Francie Novo, special events coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “Raising awareness and finding a cure are two of our priorities.” There were many highlights at this year’s event, including the Luminaria Ceremony and Survivor Dinner Reception. During the opening ceremony, Makayla Tolmie performed an original song dedicated to the 20th Anniversary. This year, organizers added a Mayor’s Kids Zone and Beautiful Lengths Ceremony. Sixteen females cut their hair on stage and two men shaved their heads. One young girl cut eight inches of hair and then returned to shave it off. Since it began in 1999, the Pembroke Pines Relay For Life has raised approximately $3.5 million. This year’s event raised approximately $215,000, which far exceeded the original goal. Relay for Life of Everglades High School, which raised over $24,700, was the top fundraising team. Some of the other top teams included: PR Pageant Coaches, #Gold Together for Childhood Cancer, Divas for a Cure Pembroke Pines, Sassy Seniors for a Cure, Mayor’s Gang, Team Lakeside, Sunset Lakes Eagles, Team Mission Possible and Performers for a Cure. Together, the top 10 teams raised over $144,000.

Pembroke Pines Residents to Celebrate July 4th BY DEBBY TEICH
I
n Pembroke Pines, the 4th of July celebration will kick off on July 3 with an all-American afternoon. From 11:30am to 1:30pm, over 700 people are expected to attend the Annual July 4th BBQ at the City of Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. Members will enjoy a BBQ lunch, entertainment and dancing. Student volunteers from Pembroke Pines Charter, Flanagan High School, West Broward High Schools and The Center will assist members in finding their seats and delivering dessert. Members are encouraged to dress in their finest red, white and blue for a chance to win the “Best Patriotic” outfit contest. The event is free for members only. “It’s just really a fun day with wonderful food and music inside (not outside in the heat),” said Suzy Felix, Activities Coordinator. Several thousand people dressed in red, white and blue are expected to gather for the City of Pembroke Pines annual July 4th Celebration at Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds, 7400 Pines Boulevard. Guests can arrive as early as 6pm to begin purchasing hot dogs, hamburgers, and other fun foods from all types of food trucks. From 6pm to 8:45pm, there will be rides, games, art projects and other activities for the kids. Families can also dance all night to the sounds of the Pocket Change band. At 9pm, one of the best fireworks display in South Florida will begin. The beautiful light and sound extravaganza will last approximately 20 minutes. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs. Coolers, pets and personal fireworks are not permitted. “There’s no better place to be on the 4th of July than at the City of Pembroke Pines Celebration,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “It’s a fun night for all ages, it’s a safe way to enjoy fireworks, and it’s a great way to celebrate in a patriotic spirit. I’ll see you there.” Although the Fourth of July is traditionally known as a fun holiday, it is also the
one that typically has the most fires. Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. According to the American Red Cross, the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals, such as this one. If someone is setting fireworks off at home, the American Red Cross recommends that they follow these safety steps: ▸▸ Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging. ▸▸ Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution. ▸▸ Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears Pembroke Pines residents attend last year’s celebration. eye protection. ▸▸ Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight “a dud.” ▸▸ Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets. ▸▸ Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials. ▸▸ Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks. No pets, coolers, tents or handheld fireworks allowed. For information, call 954-435-6525 or visit www.ppines.com.

KAPOW Volunteers Teach Students at Silver Palms Elementary BY DEBBY TEICH

hroughout the school year, volunteers from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital have been teaching students at Silver Palms Elementary. Once a month, Gisel Rodriguez and Julie Tan visit with students in Donna Gasbarro’s fifth grade class to teach them about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. Last month, the students took a field trip to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for the final lesson. It is all part of KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work). KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. They include hands-on fun activities to involve the children and keep them interested. Rodriguez says she was excited to teach the stu-
dents about her role and responsibilities as an occupational therapist. “Kapow provides us with the opportunity to go out to the community and teach students more about career choices and paths that they can pursue in the future,” said Rodriguez. “It also allows us to interact in fun ways, but at the same time focus on promotPhoto Credit: Tania Reynolds ing positive and important qualities. professionals in the community. Habitual Toe Walkers BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
A
t the beginning of independent walking, toddlers may walk on their toes. Within three to six months the heel should be touching the ground during gait. Intermittent toe walking may be present in normal children until age six or seven. Most children who present as persistent toe walkers are able to lower their heels to the ground when standing but not walking. Walking heel-toe is possible for a few steps but usually awkwardly due to tight calf muscles. Toe walkers are more common in boys and in many cases are a cause of concern. Treatment of habitual toe walkers may be necessary to avoid problems that can occur secondary to compensating for the abnormal posture. Compensation may occur by hyperextending the knee, rotating the entire leg towards the outside or having the foot turn down or out, causing a flat foot. It is important to assess the degree of muscle tightness in the hips, knees and legs. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. If the gastroc soleus (calf muscles) are not severely tight, stretching at home may be of benefit. Usually casting the foot and leg is necessary to stretch out the tight muscle group. Casts may be applied every two weeks for four to eight weeks. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases.
Causes:
▸▸ Neurological disorders must always be ruled out. ▸▸ Tightness of the calf muscles.

▸▸ Inability to walk in a normal heel-toe gait. ▸▸ Persistently on the ball of the foot. ▸▸ Pain in legs, especially at night. ▸▸ Feet pointing to the outside. ▸▸ Arch very flat. ▸▸ Arched lower back (hyperlordosis). ▸▸ Bouncing type gait or gait that appears abnormal.
Symptoms:
▸▸ Pain in the legs especially during activity. ▸▸ Pain in the legs at night. ▸▸ Fatigue in the feet and legs with activity.
Treatment:
▸▸ Thorough history and physical exam. Neurologic causes must be ruled out. ▸▸ Mild cases may require stretching exercises and night splints. ▸▸ Moderate cases require casting the leg to stretch the calf muscles. The cast is weightbearing and may be necessary for four to eight weeks. There is no pain involved. The child can resume almost all activities in the cast, including riding a bicycle and walking briskly. ▸▸ Following cast removal, splints at night may be needed. Casting the leg is especially important if the child is flat footed. If untreated, the arch will flatten, causing long-term foot, ankle, knee and back problems. ▸▸ Casting is almost always successful in the younger child if the degree of tightness is not severe. Failure to stretch the muscle group with casting the extremity may necessitate surgically lengthening the Achilles tendon or calf muscle. This is done by making three small incisions on the back of the leg, each about one-twelfth of an inch or a small cut in the gastroc aponeurosis. Casts are applied postoperatively for six weeks and night splinting for six to twelve months to maintain the correction. Doing this procedure may have a positive impact on these children for the rest of their life. They can avoid long-term problems with the extremities and back by having this procedure done properly. rbor Day is dedicated to the planting, care and conservation of trees. To help celebrate the holiday, elementary school students in Pembroke Pines participated in the 2018 Arbor Day Poster Contest. The winners received awards at a recent City Commission meeting. The Environmental Advisory Board held the contest to create awareness among young aspiring botanists and arborist in City of Pembroke Pines schools. The poster could reflect anything relating to National Arbor Day. Art teachers at the schools selected a winning poster from each grade, kindergarten to fifth
grade, and submitted them for the EAB to judge. The EAB selected one poster for each grade. A total of 55 students participated from eight schools, including: Pembroke Pines Elementary, Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary East, Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary West, Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary Central, Panther Run Elementary, Somerset Academy Elementary School, Pembroke Lakes Elementary, and Pembroke Pines FSU Charter Elementary. The posters were displayed in the lobby of the Charles F. Dodge City Center. The first-place winners were: ▸▸ Kindergarten - Mar’Lissandro Stoute, Pembroke

Flanagan Interact Club Assists Rotary Club with Concert BY DEBBY TEICH
M
embers of the Interact Club at Flanagan High School recently brightened the day for over 500 seniors during a free concert held for the residents of Century Village. The Interact students helped serve the food and seat the residents, including many who had physical difficulties. They were assisting the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines, which sponsors the Interact Club at the school.
“The visit to Century Village was so special, as it gave our club the opportunity to interact with our community, and give a true helping hand,” said Joslynn Gomez, 17, who is the president of the Interact Club at Flanagan High School. “We
can’t wait for more opportunities to give back to our community!” Century Village residents gathered on a Sunday afternoon to listen to the sounds of La Tradition, which specializes in a diverse range of Latin music. The seniors had smiles on their faces and many even got up to dance. Everyone enjoyed free food, which was donated by Las Vegas Restaurant and the Rotary Club, as well as water, supplied by Aldi in Pembroke Pines. “It is important to give back to the community,” said Gail Quigley, who has been a Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines member for nine years. “The motto of Rotary is ‘Service Above Self’ and this was an opportunity to spread Rotary’s message to a large group that we had never worked with previously.” The Rotary Club is always looking for ways to help in the community. Although this was the first time they held a concert for the residents of Century Village, they have been busy making a difference in other areas. They support Pack-a-Sack and give books to students at AC Perry Elementary School and Sunshine Elementary School. They provide backpacks filled with school supplies for residents of Children’s Harbor in Pembroke Pines, as well as for students in Miramar at a Center identified by Commissioner Yvette Colbourne. They support the Exceptional Theatre Company, which provides theatre experiences to handicapped children and adults. This year, they also provided art supplies and sports equipment to the Boys and Girls Club. Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines has approximately 27 members. Most live or work in Pembroke Pines or Miramar. Members meet every Thursday, at 12:15pm, at Club 19, in the Pembroke Lakes Country Club. Anyone interested in joining is welcome to attend. For information, visit www.rotaryclubofmiramarpines.com.

he hurricane season officially began on June 1 and ends on November 30. The time to prepare is now! Last year, Hurricane Irma challenged not only our city, but the entire state once it hit our shores. It is a lesson learned to always be prepared each hurricane season and throughout the year. The 2018 hurricane season is expected to be more active than usual. However, as we all know, it only takes one storm to cause damage. A total of 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and two major hurricanes are

expected this season. The City of Pembroke Pines is committed to providing preparation information year round. Through our “Pembroke Pines Prepared” focus, residents can get up to date information, resources and tips on how best to prepare for and handle hurricanes before, during, and after, as well as other possible emergencies by going to our website at www.ppines.com. Click on Pembroke Pines Prepared, under “Living in Pines,” at the top of the site on the home page. Should a hurricane head our way, please be sure to check for the most current and accurate information on our website. We also encourage everyone to sign up for CodeRed, a free telephone notification system, to receive emergency notifications -- a link is conveniently located on the website’s home page. As we enter this busy weather season, it’s critical that the City has the correct and most up to date information from the Home Owners and Condo Associations in the City. Our Code of Ordinance §32.170 states that all HOAs must provide current and updated contact information of HOA board members and emergency contacts to the City. If there were another hurricane with lengthy power outages (such as occurred with Hurricane Irma), no resident would be blind-sided by isolation and the inability to communicate with resources. During emergency conditions, it is important that communities are able to receive advisories, warnings, and updates as they are broadcast by our Emergency Operations Management. This is why the City emphasizes that HOA board members and organizers keep the City updated with important contact information. By providing us information, HOAs do their part on behalf of their residents by increasing communicability with the City. We ask that HOAs and Condo Association please visit the City of Pembroke Pines website at www.ppines.com to complete an information form, or go directly to www.ppines.com/HOACondoContact. And, I’d also like to take a moment to humbly brag that Pembroke Pines, according to a new WalletHub report, has been ranked No. 6 on WalletHub’s “2018 Best Cities for Hispanic Entrepreneurs.” The survey compared the 180 largest U.S. cities across 23 key metrics, including Hispanic entrepreneurship rate, Hispanic income growth, and share of Hispanic-owned businesses. I’ll end with a reminder that we have many exciting events planned in June, including Mayor’s Kids’ Day. Information on this event and all others can be found on our calendar at www.ppines.com, on our Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines, and on Twitter @cityofppines and Instagram @cityofppines. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

Considering Removing Your Breast Implants?
954.384.4500
TheSwimAcademy@gmail.com TheSwimAcademy.com
BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
E
vidence shows that breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure that results in higher patient satisfaction with their breasts and enhanced psychological well-being. Despite this, an increasing number of women are electing to remove their breast implants. In 2017, more than 45,000 breast implant removal procedures were performed – a twenty percent increase over the previous three years. The impetus to undergo breast explantation is multi-factorial ranging from implant related complications like implant rupture, hardening (capsular contracture) or breast pain, to large breasts with size dissatisfaction to autoimmune symptoms which patient’s attribute to their breast implants. After the implant is removed, the breast can appear empty or “deflated.” To avoid this unaesthetic result, the breast can be lifted (mastopexy) and volume can be restored with the patient’s own fat (autologous fat transfer) or by rearranging or reshaping the breast with adjacent breast tissue, a so-called augmentation. All these techniques have been shown to be successful in plastic surgical literature. When the implants are removed, patients are often pleased with the aesthetic outcome and report very high patient satisfaction rates. Additionally, in a Journal of Immunologic research in February 2017, it was noted that in numerous studies, patients with symptoms of breast pain, muscle aches, and fatigue had reduced symptoms once the implants and capsules were removed. In this same article, blood markers for autoimmune disease were unchanged after implant removal in the majority of patients. There is an extensive body of medical literature demonstrating that breast augmentation with both saline and silicone implants is safe without a direct link to autoimmune disease. The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is a highly personal one, and therefore treatment options should be individualized based on each person’s unique aesthetic goals. If you are considering breast augmentation, a breast implant exchange or replacement, or implant removal, it is important to discuss your goals with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Messa is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and has achieved the award Black Diamond with Allergan. As a Black Diamond Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Messa is in the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. LEGALLY SPEAKING
No Estate Plan? You Are Not Alone. BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.
Y
ou may be surprised to learn that 60% of all American adults have no estate plan in place. The distribution of your property, the care and custody of your minor children and the identification of who directs the administration of your estate is left to the default laws of intestate succession created by the state of Florida. So, in simpler terms: if you do not have a will or trust, the state will make all your decisions for you. Another surprising estate planning fact is that on average those people who do have an estate plan revise or update their documents every 19 years. Imagine if you have done your estate plan in 1999 and never updated it. How different are your financial and personal circumstances now? Would the choices you made, the people you identified and the concerns you addressed, still be appropriate today? Probably not. Estate planning is often narrowly viewed as a process undertaken to plan for the orderly and efficient transfer of assets at death. A broader viewpoint is that estate planning is life planning, encompassing disability, retirement and creditor protection, as well as who gets what after you are gone.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualiications and experience.
If you have minor children, your planning should address the support of yourself, your spouse and your children, if you become disabled. It should provide a source of funds for children’s education, day care and medical expenses, as well as for the regular expenses of running your household. If you have adult children, are you confident that your heirs will not recklessly spend their inheritance? Do you have any concerns that their inheritance may be lost to creditors or in a divorce? Do you have an adult child with special needs? Finally, do you own a small business? Have you considered what might happen to your business after you are gone? Do you have a business succession plan or buy/sell agreement in place? A proper estate plan should allow you to control your property while you are alive and well. It should also provide for you and your family if you become disabled. And it should allow you to give what you have to whom you want, in the way you want, all while minimizing the taxes, professional fees and costs to your loved ones. If you do not have an estate plan, or if your plan requires revision, I recommend that you meet with a qualified estate planning attorney. Once you do have an estate plan, I urge you to review it every two to three years to make sure it still meets your needs. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. PET CARE
Those Summer Itches! BY DR. JOHANNA M. BUSTTER
A
s the summer months approach, so does the flea and tick season. Fleas and ticks are the most common parasites in dogs and cats and they are very prevalent in South Florida. They can become a serious problem if left uncontrolled, not only in your pet, but also in your home and yard. You may not know that your pet has fleas until their number increases to the point that your pet is obviously uncomfortable. Signs of flea problems range from mild redness to severe scratching that can lead to open sores and skin infections. Once they get a skin infection, they need antibiotics, medications for itching, as well as special shampoos to control the infection. Pets which are allergic to flea saliva, called Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD), may be intensely itchy with just one flea bite, while non-allergic pets may be heavily infested and show little or no discomfort. Flea control is especially important when pets have FAD.
Reach 160,000+ Homes Throughout Broward County
Other than skin issues, fleas can also cause anemia, especially in young or debilitated dogs and cats. In addition, fleas can carry several diseases, including plague. They can also act as a host to spread one of the most common parasites, tapeworms, in our furry friends. Ticks are commonly found in wooded areas. Any animal that enters this environment is at risk of becoming a tick host. Ticks can cause skin irritation and heavy infestations can cause anemia in pets. Just one bite of a tick could spread serious infectious diseases, such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and even tick paralysis in dogs. Treating your pet has never been easier. There are new oral products that prevent and kill fleas and ticks as fast as 24 hours and last all month long. Ask your veterinarian for the safest and most effective flea and tick prevention for your pet’s needs. Dr. Johanna Bustter owns and practices at Laguna Isles Animal Hospital, 19401 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-434-8654.

Caregiving for a Loved One with Dementia
1st annual
BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES
C
aring for someone with dementia is a job no one ever hopes for. And in many cases, it is a role for which most people aren’t prepared. But many families find themselves with someone in the family needing care. Every 66 seconds, someone in the United States develops dementia. Worldwide that number is once every three seconds. So, the reality is you probably know, or will know, someone with the disease. Although there is currently no way to prevent or cure Alzheimer’s, there are things that can be done to ease the burden of caregiving. One of the most important tips is to put together a strong support team. This team is made up of professionals, family members, friends, organizations, and any other person who can assist during this journey. The medical component of the team should be a physician who understands dementia and all that goes with it. This may mean using a physician other than the primary care doctor. It doesn’t mean changing doctors, but instead supplementing. An elder law attorney is also a key member of the team. It is imperative to make sure that all needed paperwork be completed while the person is still able to make such decisions. Also, the elder law attorney can steer you in the right direction in regarding financial decisions. Medicaid and Medicare laws are quite complex and ever changing. Another part of the team should include a support group. These groups, usually led by a trained facilitator, provide information about the disease, progression and resources. As a caregiver, you will gain valuable information not only from the facilitator, but from the other members of the group. Many people find that support groups offer a safe place to share thoughts that they may not share with others that are not in their situation. When looking for a support group, location may not be the most important factor. What are the dynamics of the group? If you are a spouse but most of the group is made up of adult children, it may not be the right fit. What is the style of the facilitator? You should a have a leader that you are comfortable with. Friends and family members are vital members of the team. It is not uncommon for parents to assume their adult children are too busy, too far away or not interested in helping. Others assume they are going to help more than they are able. Assumptions also might be made regarding financial decisions. Open discussions about these topics are important, so that there are not conflicts down the road. Friends, neighbors, church members often want to help but don’t know what to offer. When a person says, “If there is ever anything you need, please ask,” have a mental list of what you need. Perhaps they could bring a meal once a month. Or maybe go to the pharmacy or the store when needed. You are not able to do this job on your own. As they say, “It takes a village.” And having a team around you will make part of the journey a bit easier.

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
IT IS THE POLICY OF THIS STATE TO ENCOURAGE THE PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF DISPUTES AND THE EARLY RESOLUTION OF PENDING LITIGATION THROUGH A VOLUNTARY SETTLEMENT PROCESS” The above quote is from the Florida Collaborative Law Process Act. It is probably somewhat contrary to what many of you or friends or family have experienced while going through a divorce. Everyone has heard the “horror stories” of endless litigation and exorbitant fees. There is in fact a way to possibly avoid those issues by using the collaborative process. It is defined as “a unique nonadversarial process that preserves a working relationship between the parties and reduces the emotional and financial toll of litigation.” There are some definite rules that must be followed and not every case is suited for the collaborative process. “As part of this nonadversarial and voluntary resolution of disputes, lawyers who engage in the collaborative law process in a family law matter, and any other lawyers in that lawyer’s firm, may not afterwards represent any party in any related proceeding except to request that a court approve the settlement reached during the collaborative law process or in specified emergency situations in accordance with family law court rules.” As stated above, if for some reason the collaborative process “breaks down” and litigation becomes the only alternative, the collaborative attorney must withdraw from representing his/her client. Therefore, if the process is not successful, either a new attorney must be retained, or the client can represent his/herself. One attorney cannot represent both parties. In addition, both parties must agree to use the collaborative process. The goal of the collaborative process is for both parties and their respective attorneys to act as a team and not as adversaries. In most instances there are other “team members,” such as accountants, financial advisers, or mental health professionals. The “team” schedules meetings with all parties present. An agenda is prepared and the “team” attempts to move forward to resolve all the issues that are involved. This is a process and, therefore, the parties should be prepared to have these “team meetings” on more than one occasion. All parties must sign a written agreement before the process begins stating each client’s intent to resolve the dissolution through the collaborative process; each party’s acceptance that they shall make timely, full and candid informal disclosure of information without formal discovery; and their understanding that if either party initiates a proceeding in court, the process shall terminate and the attorney’s involved cannot continue their representation. Attorneys are now required to advise prospective clients about the collaborative process. Although there is no actual certification an attorney can obtain to be declared a “Collaborative Attorney,” there are attorneys who have been trained in the process. As in all matters of law, experience and training are always beneficial to a client. If you or anyone you know are interested in the Collaborative Process, please give my office a call. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

editorpembrokepines@ourcitymedia.com Elett Bailey took a copy of Our City Pembroke Pines to Port Royal, Jamaica. Once known as the “wickedest city on earth,” Port Royal was frequented by pirates and buccaneers. In 1962, an earthquake left two thirds of the city buried under the sea. The city later emerged as a British naval base. It is now a small maritime community.
