espite the soaring temperatures and almost daily deluge of rain, summer is one of the best times to be in South Florida. The snowbirds have all flown home and now those of us who live here can enjoy endless miles of beautiful beaches, easy access to the region’s outstanding restaurants, and a chance to experience all the attractions our community has to offer. After all, there is a reason approximately 30 million tourists visit the tri-county area each year. Get in touch with nature with an airboat ride through the Everglades or charter a boat and go deep sea fishing. Take your taste buds on a journey every Monday night at the Food Trucks at Arts Park in Hollywood or sip and savor a cocktail while watching the sunset at one of the many beachfront bistros. Speaking of the beach, that’s a great place to beat the heat. Pack up the cooler with icy cold drinks and enjoy a day of sand and surf, just don’t forget the sunscreen. Water parks and indoor activity centers are another option for wholesome family fun. Whatever you choose to do this summer, enjoy yourself and stay safe. Remember it is hurricane season. Make sure you have your emergency supplies ready, with at least a three-day supply of food and water for each member of your household. Sincerely,

Test Your Skills at the Youth Chess Tournament BY DEBBY TEICH

C

hess has long been regarded as a game that can have many beneficial effects, especially when it is played from a young age. On July 21, area youth will have an opportunity to test their chess skills in the 6th Annual Chess tournament at the Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines. All of the money raised will benefit the library. “Research shows that chess touches on so many aspects of development and learning: reasoning, planning, spatial skills, mathematics, and logic, as well as patience, sportsmanship, and social skills to name a few,” said Lynn Morrison, Youth Services Librarian Supervisor at Southwest Regional Library. Chris Stormont, Certified US Chess Federation Tournament Director, will be leading the free, timed tournaments for ages 6 to 18, held from 10am to 4pm. Players will be grouped by their self-selected levels and play five rounds on regulation chess sets that are provided by the library. A computerized program will match players throughout the tournament. All competitors will participate in all five rounds and will receive a medal or trophy.

players with procedures, help time the events, and more. The chess club contains players of all levels and meets throughout the year. Approximately 45 students participate during the school year and the number increases to 100 during the summer. During the award ceremony, one player will receive the “Shining Knight Good Sportmanship Award.” “The library has become more than a collection of materials as it was in the past,” said Morrison. “We now have so many opportunities to learn by doing and making things. Along with the benefits of chess playing itself, this is also a great way to expand your social circle and find new friends who enjoy the same hobbies you do. The Youth Chess Tournament is a way to enjoy the library as a community gathering place for fun and games. I’m really proud of the players who have been involved in Southwest Regional Library’s Chess Tournaments. We aren’t encouraging hardcore competition, as much as providing a chance for youngsters to experience what a tournament can be like.”

The tournament is for players of all levels. Approximately 70 players from throughout South Florida are expected to participate. It includes beginners that are new to chess and participating in a

tournament for the first time, as well as experienced players who belong to chess clubs. Pre-registration is required by phone or in person, from July 5-17. No players will be registered after this date. Mentors from the library’s Youth Chess Club will help run the tournaments. They will assist

Johnson Street Dog Park Renamed in Memory of Pembroke Pines Police Officer BY DEBBY TEICH

K

-9 Officer Craig Rupp’s service and love of animals will never be forgotten. The City of Pembroke Pines recently honored his memory by changing the name of Johnson Street Dog Park (9751 Johnson Street) to Craig Rupp Dog Park. Members of the Rupp family, along with Pembroke Pines Police and Fire departments, the City Commission, and Pembroke Pines residents, gathered to celebrate the event, which marked the one-year anniversary of Officer Rupp’s passing on June 1, 2017. “Today is a very special occasion for this dedication of the park for Officer Craig Rupp,” said Dan Giustino, Chief of Police. “He spent 25 years of doing outstanding service for the community, especially as one of our canine officers.” Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis officially renamed the park to “Craig Rupp Dog Park.” The morning celebration also included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, as well as the unveiling of a new plaque. More than 300 guests enjoyed light refreshments following the ceremony. “We are dedicating this great park for a great person,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “The head Officer Craig Rupp canine instructor, Craig Rupp,

spent so much time at this park with his dogs. He had a tragic incident, so the City wanted to dedicate a park in his memory.” Officer Rupp joined the agency when he was only 20 years old. He was the youngest recruit to work for the Pembroke Pines Police Department at that time. His law enforcement approach was one that focused on community policing. He was well known in the neighborhoods that he frequently patrolled. This included the area that surrounds the park, which is often used as place for pets and their owners to gather and play. There are also benches for owners to watch and relax. Officer Rupp retired from the Pembroke Pines Police Department after more than 25 years of service the year prior, but stayed involved with the department as a reserve police officer. He worked as a K-9 Officer and Trainer for more than a decade with his canine partners Falco and Bullit. Dogs were so responsive to him that many called him the “dog whisperer.” Officer Rupp was 46 when he died. He is survived by his wife, Erika and two daughters, Madison and Olivia.

When planning you child’s birthday party, it’s good to get some help during the big day.Ask your close friends, family members or other parents if they can assist with set up, volunteer during the event with activities and with taking photos, and to help close down theparty. Selecting the food for a kid’s birthday can seem like a trying task. But kids are typically not picky eaters. Most like simple food, such as pizza or chicken fingers. Enter the Master Chef “Crazy Coconut Summer Baking Challenge” BY DEBBY TEICH

N

othing says South Florida more than palm trees! If you have a coconut recipe that gets rave reviews from family and friends, it may be worth some money. The Master Chef “Crazy Coconut Summer Baking Challenge” will be held on July 17, at 10am sharp, at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Senior Center Campus. There is no cost to enter, but all participants must be a member of the SWFP Community Center. Entry forms will be available at the Activities Desk and must be turned in by July 16. “It’s an opportunity to be creative and show off one’s culinary skills,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor. “There is the satisfaction of people enjoying your creation and let’s not forget - bragging rights if your creation wins!” The Master Chef Baking Challenge got its start in 2005, when Daniels created the Chocolate Challenge as one of the evening activities at the Valentine’s Dance. In recent years, it has expanded to include other key ingredients, such as berries, pineapple, peaches and chocolate. In the upcoming Challenge, all desserts must

contain fresh coconut. It can be coconut pie, coconut cake, coconut macaroons, coconut custard, or any other creation. All desserts must be homemade. No candy or storebought entries allowed. Participants must be present to win. A list of ingredients must be provided. Celebrity judges from Vicky Bakery will be judging this event. They will award prizes for the top three

delightfully delicious and visually stunning desserts. All entries will be judged based on appearance, texture and overall flavor. Cash prizes include 1st ($50), 2nd ($30), and 3rd ($20). Winners will also receive bragging rights as “Master Chef.” Once the judges have tried all of the entries, audience members will have an opportunity to sample them.

“I believe baking is a form of art and art is expression,” said Daniels. “Bakers make amazing creations that are elegant, whimsical and just plain incredible! Whether it’s melted chocolate flowing down the side of a cake or the way buttercream icing swirls to form a delicate rose – it’s beautiful!” The last challenge was held in February 2018. The contestants with the best chocolate desserts were: 1st place - Kit Jordan (chocolate candy); 2nd place - Ana Meneses (chocolate cake) and 3rd place - Sandy Levine (triple chocolate chip cheesecake). The next challenge will be held in December. Daniels has still not determined the key ingredient. Participants must be a member of the Carl Shechter SW Focal Point Community Center, which is located at 301 NW 103rd Ave, in Pembroke Pines. It is free to join. For information, call 954450-6888 or visit www.ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services.

PPTOPA Presents West Side Story on Stage BY DEBBY TEICH

I

f you have always dreamed of seeing a Broadway show, the Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) can give you a taste of what it is like. It offers top-notch community theater at an affordable price. From July 20 - August 12, West Side Story will be on stage for 16 performances. Show times are Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2pm, at the Susan B. Katz Theatre at the River of Grass Arts Park. Inspired by William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood of New York City in the 1950s and explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The infamous score includes Maria, Tonight and I Feel Pretty. Family Night will be held on July 21, at 8pm. Fiesta Latina (dinner and show) will be held on July 28, at 8pm. It includes an optional Latinstyle dinner at 6pm. The Senior Matinee will be held on August 4 at 2pm. PPTOPA presents four shows annually and many of them have attracted as many as 6,000 people. With a full orchestra, as well as profes-

sional sets, backdrops and costumes, the plays are expensive to produce. The theater raises money through donations and ticket sales, which range from $19 to $32 for adults and $15 for children. Upcoming productions include Seussical the Musical in Winter 2019, The Mousetrap in Spring 2019 and Addams Family in Spring 2019. While technically an “amateur” company, PPTOPA productions routinely feature some of the finest actors and actresses in South Florida. They are teachers, attorneys, doctors, business owners and others who volunteer their time to immerse themselves in something they love. Recent casts have included performers who have headlined productions at Stage Door, Curtain Call, Tamarac, and Actors Theaters. They have been on national Broadway tours, starred in Hollywood films, and written and produced their own plays. Many have been nominated and selected as recipients of South Florida’s Carbonell awards. Performances are held at the Susan B. Katz Theatre, 17195 Sheridan Street, in the River of Grass Artspark. For information, to order tickets or to volunteer, call 954437-4884, visit www.pptopa.com or send an email to info@pptopa.org.

PPCES-FSU Campus Students Visit PPPD BY DEBBY TEICH

W

hen students at City of Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School - FSU campus visit a police department, they now have a better understanding of what it takes to work in law enforcement. They recently took a field trip to Pembroke Pines Police Department as part of KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work). “The KAPOW program really connects the classroom to the real world, exposing students to the world of work and where what they’re learning today fits into their future,” said Lauren Hindmarsh, 5th

grade teacher. KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. Throughout the year, Officer Feldman met with students at the school to teach them about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. He used handson fun activities to involve the children and keep them interested. For the last lesson, two fifth grade classes took a field trip to the Pembroke Pines Police Department to see where he works. “The City of Pembroke Pines and KAPOW have been working together for many years to teach our young students about a multitude of possible careers, including law enforcement,” said Cheryl Watters, Pembroke Pines Police Community Affairs

Unit. “We help show the kids what kind of education is needed to perform specific types of police positions and how students can learn to prepare for a great career in their future.” Students toured the first two floors of the police department, watched the department video, and viewed the inside of the Mobile Command Post. They met with officers, as well as some of the specialized units, such as K-9, traffic, SWAT and Dive members. “The field trip really gave students an up-close look at the in’s and out’s of police work and what it truly entails,” said Hindmarsh. “KAPOW is an amazing program.” For information about volunteering, or your school or business becoming a KAPOW partner, visit www.kapowlfs.wordpress.com or send an email to taniakapow@gmail.com.

Franklin Academy Charter Schools Sends School Supplies Abroad BY DEBBY TEICH

S

tudents at Franklin Academy Charter School Pembroke Pines K-8 campus are learning the importance of making a difference in the community and around the world. For the second consecutive year, they collected gently used school supplies to help children in need in Guayana and Venezuela. It is a wonderful example of kids helping kids. The campaign, “Used Tools 4 Kids,” was created by thirteen-year-old Alexandra Beharry-Yambo, who attends middle school at Franklin Academy. She selected Venezuela, because she realized there was a great need there. She chose Guyana, because that’s where her mother is from. “My mother was aware of what the kids needed, because she grew up there,” said Alexandra. “At some of the schools in Guyana, the teacher would have to buy one sheet of paper and divide it among the class. And kids in America throw away a lot of materials that these teachers and students could use.”

“The children in the schools were so grateful to have received all the supplies,” said Alexandra. “You can clearly see the smiles on their faces.” She decided to repeat the effort again this year. To help encourage students to donate, she made a video that contained pictures from the kids using the supplies at their schools, as well as information about the drive. She showed it to her classmates during lunch. She also made a poster with photos of the kids from Guyana with the words “Thank You.” She placed boxes around the school Alexandra Beharry-Yambo (center), along with Elena Diaz, Franklin Academy Principal (left), and Dr. Danial hoping students would donate unused supplies Sandberg, Franklin Academy Superintendent (right) as they cleaned out their backpacks and desks. “If these kids don’t have any supplies, they won’t be able to have a proper education,” said Alexandra. The students in Guyana were grateful for the supplies. Alexandra During the 2016-17 school year, the school shipped is still not sure what career she wants to pursue more than 1,700 pounds of previously used school but is hoping it will involve art or music. She does supplies, including notebooks, pencils, backpacks, know, however, that she always plans to help crayons, white boards, story books and much more. the community.

ait disturbances are one of the most common concerns of parents. Children may begin walking with their feet turned in or out, leaving parents with many questions. The problem may be coming from any level between the foot and hip. Some deformities occur at one level (i.e. foot, leg, knee, or hip), while others are more complex. Some children may “grow out of it”, while others will not. Newborns and infants are born with their legs bowed and the lower leg turned in relative to the upper leg (medial tibial torsion). This represents the fetal position of the lower limbs. With the beginning of walking the lower limbs start to straighten as normal physiologic development takes place.

▸▸ To effectively treat rotational problems, the level and severity of the deformity must be determined. ▸▸ If sleeping and sitting position perpetuate the deformity, they must be changed. ▸▸ There may be a need for casting the foot, ankle and leg (every two weeks) to put tight ligaments and muscles into a continuous stretch. This may be necessary for anywhere from two to eight weeks. ▸▸ Physical therapy to improve muscle flexibility and to provide gait training to the child. ▸▸ In shoe custom molded orthotics or gait plates to help encourage normal walking. This is especially beneficial in the flatfooted child or ones who are intoed. ▸▸ Night braces or splinting to encourage and maintain correction. ▸▸ In rare cases, surgery may be necessary if the problems persist and walking becomes difficult or if the child continues to fall or trip. In most cases, continued observation of the child may be all that is necessary.

PET CARE

Pets & Bufo Toad Poisoning BY DR. JOHANNA M. BUSTTER OWNER OF LAGUNA ISLES ANIMAL HOSPITAL

D

uring the wet and warm summer months in South Florida, we see an increase of the Bufo marinus, also known as the Cane Toad, Giant Toad or Bufo Toad. These toads are brown to grayishbrown with black or white spots. They can range in size from six to nine inches or even bigger. They are usually very sedentary, but when confronted by a predator, the toad secretes a whitish liquid toxin from the gland on the back of the head. This secretion is highly toxic to dogs, cats, and other animals. Usually what happens is that a dog or cat finds the toad and mouths the toad playfully, thus receiving a large dose of the toxins, which are absorbed rapidly through the gums directly into the blood stream. The pet usually experiences immediate salivation and irritation of the mouth and throat. The poison contains hallucinogenic and cardiac toxins. If the pet receives a large quantity of the toxin or ingests the toad, foaming of the mouth, vomiting, difficulty breathing, red colored gums, staggering and stumbling, irregular heartbeat, seizures and death may follow in just a few minutes. The death rate for untreated animals exposed to the toxin is extremely high in South Florida and is dependent on the dogs or cat’s size and the amount of the toxic ingested. There is no antidote for the Bufo Toad poison, therefore immediate care is required to prevent any fatalities. If your pet has been poisoned by the toad or you strongly suspect it, immediately flush out his mouth with water. Use a soaking wet wash cloth to rinse the whole mouth (tongue, gums, teeth and cheeks) several times. Take care not to get bit or let your pet ingest the rinse Bufo toad, photo by Carol Lyn Parrish water. Do not use a hose to rinse the mouth, as water can be accidentally inhaled into the lungs and cause respiratory issues including pneumonia. Once the pet’s mouth has been rinsed, immediately contact your veterinarian. Since as mentioned before there is no antidote for the poison, your veterinarian will manage and reduce symptoms by giving intravenous fluids and medications to counteract the seizure activity and cardiac abnormalities. Usually, the smaller the pet the higher the chances of severe poisoning and death. Typical recovery is 12 -24 hours without any long-term effects if treatment is started soon after exposure. Prevention is the key to avoiding this fatal poisoning. Do not allow your pet to be unattended or wandering without you, especially during the summer months. Use a leash when you walk your dog and consider bringing a flashlight, so you can visualize the toad that may be in your way. Bufo Toads are most frequently seen at night, as they are nocturnal, near water, or after it rains. To avoid attracting toads to areas where pets are, do not leave pet food or open dishes outside. Bufo toads are attracted to the food. They also like to swim in pet watering dishes and may sit in the water long enough to leave enough toxins to make a dog or cat ill.

ummer is here and that means many of us will be swimming in pools and in the ocean to cool off. I’d like to take this time to remind everyone how important it is to be water safe. Hanging out at the pool, at the beach, or even splashing in a wading pool on a hot Florida day is a great way to beat the heat this summer, but it can also spell tragedy if you don’t know how to swim. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death nationwide for people ages 5 to 24, and the number one cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in Broward County. It’s never too late to learn how to swim. For more information about swimming lessons, please call 954-450-6895. With the rainy season in South Florida comes mosquitoes. The U.S. environmental Protection Agency offers citizens tips to prevent mosquito bites through a variety of methods. One of the most important actions to take is to remove mosquito habitats. This is done by eliminating standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, toys or any other container where mosquitoes can breed. They recommend emptying and changing the water in bird baths, wading pools and potted plant trays at least once a week; drain temporary pools of water after use; and keep swimming pool water treated and circulating. To avoid getting bitten, keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks when possible; tuck shirts into pants; use EPA registered mosquito repellents when necessary and follow label directions and precautions closely; and replace outdoor lights with yellow “bug” lights which tend to attract fewer mosquitoes than ordinary lights. And, it’s best to avoid the outdoors during dusk to dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active. In most cases, mosquitoes are merely a nuisance to humans and domestic animals. Since they are capable to transmitting a variety of diseases, however, it’s always best to do what you can to prevent them from breeding and biting. A great way to avoid the heat of summer is to go to The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery or “The Frank” for an array of exhibitions and workshops. You won’t want to miss The Wizard of Oz Exhibition taking place now through August 18. Presented in partnership with Miami Children’s Museum, The Wizard of Oz Exhibition invites guests of all ages to embark on a multi-sensory exploration of the iconic Land of Oz. In the only licensed educational exhibit from Warner Brothers, guests engage in a fun-filled journey of discovering personal strengths by using literacy, visual and performing arts, investigation of light and science, and much more. Admission is $5 per person. The Frank is located at 601 City Center Way. For additional information on upcoming events, please call 954-392-2120. We have many other excited events coming up this summer, so be sure to check our calendar at www.ppines.com for info on these and other planned events, and to visit our Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines or Instagram @cityofppines. Protect Yourself from the Sun

s the summer sun heats up in South Florida, it’s important to protect your skin as much as possible. The harmful UVA and UVB rays from sun exposure accelerate the aging process in the skin resulting in hyperpigmentation, increased wrinkles, and most importantly, increased incidence of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer with more cases diagnosed each year in the United States than all other cancers combined. There are some misconceptions regarding sun expo-

sure and skin cancer. ▸▸ You can’t get a sunburn on a cloudy day. Clouds only block some of the harmful ultraviolet rays, so a sunburn is still possible. ▸▸ You can’t get skin cancer where the sun doesn’t shine. Skin cancer can appear anywhere on the body, including the hands and feet. ▸▸ Skin cancer only affects light-skinned people. Those who are fair, are at increased risk, but anyone can get skin cancer. ▸▸ Using a tanning bed occasionally is safe. The United States Department of Health and Human Services and World Health Organization have classified a tanning bed as a carcinogen and research suggests that even one session may increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Some sun exposure is essential to Vitamin D metabolism; however, excessive exposure or unprotected exposure can be very harmful. Sunscreen is the obvious first step in protecting your skin. Broad spectrum is best. The FDA requires sunscreen manufacturers to prove that sunscreens protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are the primary cause of sunburn as well as Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which can cause premature aging of the skin. Both types of rays have been associated with the development of skin cancer. Choose SPF, or sun protective factor, of 15 or greater. Sunscreen must be applied in adequate amounts to achieve the SPF rating on the label. The recommended amount is 2 mg./ cm² – roughly 1 shot glass or 2 tablespoons worth of sunscreen for face and body. Patients who are concerned about obtaining enough sun exposure to make Vitamin D should be aware that current research indicates that 15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure to the mid-day sun, 3 times a week is sufficient to synthesize enough Vitamin D to meet our body’s needs. Additionally, remember to protect lips, wear sunglasses with UV protection and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Finally, it is important to get your skin checked periodically by a board-certified physician. Dr. Messa is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and has achieved the award Black Diamond with Allergan. As a Black Diamond Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Messa is in the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume.

t’s the time of year when high school grads are preparing to leave for college. Whether attending a Florida school, or one in a state far away, it’s an exciting period for kids, but an emotional time for parents. They’ve lived under your roof for 18 years, and distance won’t keep you from worrying about their well-being. It’s no surprise you may wonder, “Have I done all that I can to keep them safe?” Many parents are stunned to discover that in medical emergencies they may not be entitled to information about their college-aged children. Why? Because in the eyes of the law, your 18-year old is an adult with rights of privacy. Legally, parents have no standing to know or do anything. In an emergency, how will health care providers determine whom to call with urgent news? Will they know your child’s prior medical history? Often, they simply won’t. What’s worse, even if a parent learns of a child’s illness or accident, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) prohibits doctors and hospitals from providing information about an adult’s medical condition without his/ her written consent. While some hospitals make reasonable judgments about giving information to parents, others have refused to reveal anything, least of all over the phone. Some may not even acknowledge to frantic parents whether their adult child has been admitted to a hospital. What can a parent do? It’s simple. Have your adult child execute advance directives, which include the following: ▸▸ HIPPA Authorization for Release of Protected Health Information - Grants health care providers permission to disclose medical information to designated individuals, which is essential to informed and timely decision-making. ▸▸ Health Care Power of Attorney - A document that authorizes another person to make medical decisions for your adult child, if they cannot ▸▸ Living Will - A declaration stating whether or not life-sustaining procedures should be used to prolong life when a terminal condition is irreversible or death is imminent ▸▸ Emergency Information and Contact List - An organized, updated and concise presentation of prior medical history, allergies and emergency contact information Advance directives and emergency contact information should be immediately available when urgently needed, or the information is useless. We strongly recommend that every adult carry in their wallet an emergency medical information card that makes health/contact information and advance directives instantly accessible to medical facilities or emergency personnel anywhere in the world. An estate planning attorney can prepare these advance directives and arrange for an emergency medical card. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Gecko ParX Brings the Next Generation of Indoor Entertainment to South Florida BY STACEY BOMSER

G

ecko ParX appeals to the young and the young at heart. The 40,000 square-foot indoor entertainment center caters to children of all ages, families and corporate clients. From fun family outings and children’s birthday parties to conferences and team-building retreats, Gecko ParX is unlike any other venue. Founder John Duran explains more about the Gecko ParX concept and what you can expect to find there. What is Gecko ParX? We are South Florida’s newest indoor entertainment venue where you can jump, play, practice, compete and, most importantly, have fun. Gecko ParX offers 40,000 square-feet of exciting attractions including a trampoline court with interlocking trampolines, basketball slam dunk courts, ropes courses, dodgeball courts, an American Ninja course, parkour, rock climbing, multi-attraction pit for jousting and slackline, a children’s soft play area, and much more. In addition, we offer an arcade with state-of-the-art games, café, and seven private party rooms offering 180-degree waterfront views. It’s truly an unbelievable experience. Please describe the facility. Gecko ParX was created for all demographics, including all ages and genders. It is a heart-pounding experience for clients who enjoy physical activities and want to participate in our ten different attractions. There is also a mezzanine deck created exclusively for adults who want to enjoy a more relaxed ambiance. They can plug in a laptop, relax with a beer or glass of wine, and watch the jumpers enjoy the attractions. The mezzanine area not only provides a panoramic view of the entire facility, but it also accommodates massage chairs and relaxing mood lighting below the deck. Gecko ParX was custom designed so all ages can enjoy this one-of-a-kind facility. How was Gecko ParX designed for different demographics? My main purpose in creating this concept was to create a place for everyone to enjoy. Gecko ParX offers a soft play area for toddlers, as well as ten actionpacked attractions designed for kids, teens and adults.

There is even an area that turns into a dance floor with a live DJ, ideal for our teen socials as well as private functions. The mezzanine deck, complete with massage chairs and bar stools overlooking the facility, is the perfect place for adults to relax and unwind. What is your background? I have 25 years of experience as an owner/operator in the family entertainment industry. I was the co-founder of Riptide Entertainment, which owned and operated several Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museums. I also sit on the advisory boards of multiple companies within the family entertainment and technology sectors. My years of experience and passion for family entertainment motivated me to open Gecko ParX, a venue that appeals to all ages where the entire family can enjoy time together. How do you ensure customer safety? Safety is a top priority at Gecko ParX. Our well-trained staff supervise each section of the facility to provide assistance on how to properly use the attractions in a safe manner. Each staff member has received crowd management training and is specifically trained and certified for each attraction. The trampoline and soft play equipment are top of the line and made in the United States under strict quality standards. We adhere to a 250 pound per person weight limit to utilize our attractions. In addition, all participants must complete a waiver. Why should someone host their next event or party at Gecko ParX? This facility was created to host top-shelf events and parties. Our seven, oversized private party rooms, with 180-degree water views, make Gecko ParX stand out from all other venues. The space is set up for mixed usage, as it can host a child’s birthday party as well as corporate events. The modern layout, with its diverse and pleasant ambiance, can accommodate events ranging from ten to more than 500 guests. Gecko ParX takes pride in providing the highest level of customer satisfaction. Our event planner’s unparalleled sense of urgency and diligence, coupled with our party hosts’ customer service skills, ensure all events are a success and all guests have the best time possible. What types of party or group packages do you offer? Whether you are celebrating a Sweet 16, graduation, or any other event, we can customize a package just for you. Birthday party packages start at just $350 and include

one hour of jump time plus 45-minutes in a private party room. Gecko ParX provides pizza and unlimited water and soda. Our party host will take care of all the details, including all set-up and clean-up. We also offer customized packages for corporate events and special occasions. Besides the attractions, what types of programs do you offer? We offer ninja training classes taught by Julio Santiago, who was featured on the TV show American Ninja Warrior. We also provide personal training in parkour. Other programs include Mommy & Me, for mothers or caregivers with children from six-months to three years of age, and Tumble Tots. These professionally designed classes will help stimulate and encourage babies and toddlers to use all their senses while playing, exploring, crawling and learning in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. In addition, we offer a variety of evening programs for older kids. On Parents Night Out, we offer three hours of full activities and supervised fun for children ages six to twelve. We also host Teen Socials on select Friday nights for ages 13 to 18. Teens can enjoy access to all the attractions plus dancing with a live DJ. How much does Gecko ParX cost? We offer a variety of passes and promotions. The onehour pass offers access to seven attractions (trampoline, dodgeball, basketball, ninja course, parkour, slackline and jousting) for $19.99, while the two-hour pass is only $24.99. A rock climbing pass is $4.99, while the ropes course pass is $9.99. Our Ultimate Pass, for $45.99, offers two-hours of access to all nine attractions, as well as a $10 arcade card. For little ones, under 42-inches, we offer an all-day soft play pass for only $9.99. Be sure to check out our website, www.GeckoParx.com/tickets, for special promotions. What is the significance of the name Gecko ParX? When my family moved to South Florida from San Francisco two years ago, I was astonished by the many different types of reptiles we encountered. So, when brainstorming a name for the business, I thought of Gecko ParX. n Gecko ParX is conveniently located at 3305 Corporate Avenue in Weston, between Royal Palm Boulevard and Griffin Road. Gecko ParX is open every day except Monday. It offers daytime and evening hours; 10-11am is reserved for children less than 42 inches tall. For more information visit www. GeckoParX.com or call 954-526-8180. OURCITYPEMBROKEPINES.COM | JULY 2018 43

ach person has a different definition of quality of life. For some, it might be watching a sunset, playing a favorite sport or board game, reading a book, or enjoying a nice dinner with family. While your preferences may be different, we can all agree that quality of life is made by these special moments. If you have a loved one living with memory loss or dementia, it is important to understand that despite the disease, they are still capable of finding pleasure, feeling satisfaction, and living a happy life. Here are a few ideas for how you can improve the day-to-day life of a loved one living with dementia. Provide a Relaxed Environment. When someone you love has Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, providing a calm, tranquil environment is key to their quality of life. We know how hard it can be at times, but providing a serene ambiance benefits everyone – patients, care partners, and family. Fill their home with soft music and aromatics; decorate it with soothing colors and warm light; and make the rooms easy to navigate. It’s always nice to have visitors, but it’s also very helpful to have a schedule. Help them by maintaining consistent visit times. Provide Emotional Support. Sometimes the only thing you need to do for a senior with dementia, is be there for them. While a care partner can assist Alzheimer’s patients in many ways, support from family and friends is irreplaceable. No matter how busy your days can get, it’s always important to plan a visit and enjoy some quality time with your loved one. In the early days it can be overwhelming to find answers to those tough questions, but the best way to get through it is together. Seniors and their family both need emotional support throughout this journey. For a lot of people, joining a support group can be very helpful. Whatever your situation is, it’s comforting to know that you are not alone. Introduce Meaningful Activities. Maintaining an interest in stimulating activities can help reduce the effects of the disease and will ensure the senior continues to interact with those around them. Yes, some activities may be more difficult than before, but that doesn’t negate the interest. Meaningful activities, whether they are new or old, are important for keeping the individual happy and engaged. Reminiscence Therapy. Reminiscence therapy, also known as “life review therapy,” is an effective and pleasant way to connect with individuals who have dementia. How does it work? Events from an individual’s late teens and early twenties tend to remain as the most prominent memories. Psychologists call this “the reminiscence bump.” These memories remain vivid and can easily be remembered by using simple triggers. This is a great way to get a better understanding and feeling of their lives before the illness. Encourage Social Interaction. Therapy, a relaxed environment, and meaningful activities are important, but nothing is as important as social interaction. Listen to your loved one, be there, and encourage them to make the most of their days. Assess your loved one’s social needs and try to meet them where they are by working together with their care partners – and don’t forget to remind them how much you love them. While many seniors receive clinical or emotional support, they don’t always get physical support. Sometimes a hug can say everything that words can’t.

n many instances, depending upon the complexity of a case, expert witnesses may be retained to assist in both the preparation and presentation of the evidence. These experts are not always necessary and are often not always affordable. Their involvement requires additional fees to be paid for their time and expertise. Prior to retaining such an expert, I will always consult with my client to advise them of the necessity of such a witness and the anticipated costs. Sometimes it is just not affordable to the client. There are certain cases when an expert witness is absolutely necessary to prepare the case for both trial and settlement. It is impossible to structure a settlement if we are not aware of the actual values of certain assets. The actual value of the marital home or the family business are important factors which must be determined. Judges will not guess as to these values and web sites which estimate certain values are not dependable or even admissible in court. Here are some of the experts we often encounter in a dissolution case: ▸▸ Property appraiser to determine the true value of real property. ▸▸ Forensic Accountant to determine the assets, liabilities, and income of the parties. ▸▸ Business valuator to determine the value of a business owned by the parties. ▸▸ Actuary or pension evaluator to determine the value of a pension ▸▸ Appraiser to determine value of personal property such as jewelry or collectibles ▸▸ Guardian Ad Litem to represent the interests of minor children ▸▸ Psychologist to evaluate emotional issues of the parties and or their minor children. ▸▸ Drug counselor to determine if in fact either party may have a drug dependency. ▸▸ Vocational expert to determine a party’s earning potential in the work place. As you can see this could be a rather exhaustive list. Each of the above individuals are either privately retained or appointed by the court. Sometimes each of the parties retains their own expert. Each of these experts may render a differing opinion which would result in the Judge determining which of the expert’s testimony he/she will depend on. The opinion of an expert is not to be taken as absolute fact and therefore their opinions are subject to attack, just as like any other witness in court. The hope is that with proper preparation and a credible expert witness, the chances of a fair settlement is more likely. Of course, not all cases require the assistance of an expert. Often the issues in dispute can be resolved without their knowledge and expertise. As I have often stated, no two cases are the same and as such they cannot be treated in a similar manner. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.
