It’s Time to Go Back to School

I

t is hard to believe that the summer is already coming to an end. It’s time to review the school supplies list, pick out that lucky lunch box, and finish the summer reading assignments. August 21st is the first day of school for most kids in the area. Preparing for school has certainly gotten more complex over the past 20 years. We have gone from wrapping textbooks in brown paper bags to downloading software onto smartphones, iPads and Chromebooks. After-school programs have exploded from sports and music to a variety of different opportunities from computer classes to dual language programs. Parents have more choices as well: neighborhood school, charter school, private school or virtual school. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Pembroke Pines is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area, in addition to almost every after-school activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide a useful guide to help you get ready for the new school year. Please enjoy these last few weeks of summer. School will start before you know it.

others and fathers have their own special day. In Pembroke Pines, so do the kids. Over 1,000 children recently joined in the fun at the 8th Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day. The event was made possible by Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Baptist Medical Plaza of Pembroke Pines, and many other local businesses. “Mayor’s Kids’ Day is my favorite day,” said Mayor Ortis. “Our young residents have a wonderful time being kids in our great City of Pembroke Pines.” Residents, ages 15 and younger, received a special wristband that entitled them to hunt for deals and freebies from Pembroke Pines businesses that included bounce houses, story time, a wacky photo booth, free haircuts, chicken nuggets, self-defense and dance classes, free swimming, tennis and golf, train rides and more. Fifty kids were given a free pass from Mayor Ortis to see the Pirate Island Show at The Frank. New this year were activities at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, where the first 150 kids in line received goody bags and each kid was entered in a raffle to win “Shopkin Live” tickets in the Great Hall.

AUGUST 2017 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES

The event also included a free, fun-filled lunch from Mayor Ortis at the City of Pembroke Pines Charter High School. Children had an opportunity to take photos with mascots, dance, play trivia games for prizes, and more. Pembroke Pines Police Officer Andrew Feldman and Pembroke Pines Fire Fighter Rick Scopa passed out pencils, helmets and stickers. Ten lucky kids were randomly selected to participate in the Bright Star Money Machine, a wind tunnel of prize coupons and cash. “Businesses love this event, because it introduces them to Pembroke Pines residents,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “The kids love going to stores and receiving so many free items!” For information or to become a sponsor for the 2018 Mayor’s Kids’ Day, call 954-392-2116 or visit www.ppines.com.

Pirate Island Exhibit Opens at The Frank COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

T

he Frank Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines recently opened its first collaborative exhibition - “Pirate Island.” Created by the Miami Children’s Museum, the family-friendly exhibit is designed to bring visitors to a fantasy world of pirate adventure that comes to life with interactive games. It will be open through August 26. Admission is $5 per person The Frank has been transformed to create an expansive interpretation of pirate life through interactive art and activities for all ages. A printed treasure map offers instruction on how to interact with the various components of Pirate Island. The centerpiece for the exhibit is a 29’ pirate ship that children can go in and explore. Visitors will experience pirate folklore, learn to walk the plank, hunt for buried treasure, tie knots and handle ropes. Young buccaneers can create drawings of pirate life and trade them in for a prize from one of the Curiosity Boxes, designed by Miami artist and cultural interventionist Randy Burman. “The show is awesome,” said Cindy Kubler, who brought her three children. “My kids had a blast searching for buried treasures and walking the plank.” The show is invigorated by pirate themed murals curated by Jill Slaughter, Chief Curator of The Frank. Six contemporary “mini-murals” designed and painted by the Cushy Gigs Creative team depict images that expand the experience of a childcentric exhibition. The exhibition also includes a maritime ropes exhibition from the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and a fiber arts installation of sea life by Sheep Thrills Fiber Arts collective. The 3rd space exhibi-

tion wall, designated for exhibiting work from the community-at-large and student curators, features local resident Vivian Orozco, who specializes in historical costume design and construction. Her work documents the process of costume design from concept to completion. Two miniature models display handmade costumes referencing the attire worn by famous pirates in history. “We strive to create partnerships for social engagement by offering the presentation of contemporary art and family-friendly programming,” said Slaughter. On September 14, the Frank Art Gallery is looking for writers, painters or performers interested in free workshops in writing, mural painting, design and performing. The free event, held from 6pm to 7:30pm, is collaboration with Feeding South Florida. Refreshments will be served. The Frank is located in the Charles F. Dodge City Center in Pembroke Pines at 601 City Center Way. Guided tours of Pirate Island are available Tuesday through Saturday, from 11am to 5pm. For more information about The Frank, call 954-392-2129, email thefrank@ppines.com or visit thefrankgallery.org. Follow The Frank on Facebook and Instagram at The Frank Pembroke Pines.

INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL

Pembroke Pines Resident Enjoys Quality Time with her BBBS “Little” BY DEBBY TEICH

I

n 2009, Cathy Balenovic of Pembroke Pines was matched with five-year-old Chantal through Big Brothers, Big Sisters (BBBS) of Broward County and she has been her mentor ever since. They have created wonderful memories together, including the recent celebration of Chantal’s 14th birthday! For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. The organization makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, and develops positive

relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. Cathy got involved with BBBS, because she believes it takes a village to raise a child. She raised two boys and has a brother. Since she does not have a daughter or sister, she says that it has been a blessing to have Chantal in her life. Throughout the years, they have done a variety of activities together, including going to the beach and movies; eating out; drinking Oreo Frappuccinos at Starbucks; attending concerts, shows and BBBS events; baking; and just simply talking. Chantal has also helped at community events in SilverLakes, where Cathy is Community Affairs Director. “Chantal is a positive, sensitive, caring young lady,” said Cathy. “She is an avid reader and a great singer. It’s been a privilege to spend time with her. She knows my entire family and I know hers. All my neighbors know Chantal. I have watched her grow up. In addition to her mom and brothers, she will always have me in her corner to cheer her on. She will always have my support.”

Chantal’s mother, Martena Johnson, says that her daughter has enjoyed the time she has spent with Cathy. “Chantal has been able to connect with someone other than her family and her friends,” said Martena. “Chantal loves hanging out with Cathy and her family and she loves to go to the events that BBBS hosts. The times Chantal has shared with Cathy are some of her favorite memories. Her relationship with Cathy is honest, trusting, loving, fun, and healthy.” Cathy encourages people to donate their services to BBBS or other charities. “People might think it’s too big of a time commitment, but even a little time can go a long way,” said Cathy. “There are many children on the waitlist at BBBS, because there aren’t enough adult mentors. If they cannot volunteer their time, they can always donate resources. It’s been a wonderful experience to mentor and I encourage others to donate their time or resources to BBBS or another nonprofit that they are passionate about.” For information on Big Brothers, Big Sisters, visit www.bbbsbroward.org.

Pembroke Pines Youth Play Ball SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

M

any consider baseball to be the all-American pastime. For years, it has brought families together to watch and play. That was recently the case in Pembroke Pines, as boys and girls, ages 7 to 14, participated in the first City of Pembroke Pines “Play Ball Summer” event at Flamingo Park.

Hosted by Mayor Frank C. Ortis, the four-hour event offered stations and competitions for pitching, hitting, running bases and catching the ball. The children learned about the game of baseball and softball, while the more experienced players enhanced their skills. The free fun-filled event also included a Play Ball shirt, hotdog lunch, popcorn, peanuts, cotton candy, snow cones, bounce houses, music, games and photo opportunities with Billy the Marlin. “Play Ball Summer in Pembroke Pines was a grand slam event,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis, “We continue to support this important United States Conference of Mayors

(USCM) Play Ball Initiative to promote baseball and softball our City provided first time exposure to the sport for some children, while helping others develop and enhance existing skills. Hopefully a day like today laid the ground work for boys and girls to enjoy the game and perhaps a lifelong interest in the game.” In 2015, Major League Baseball and USCM joined to launch Play Ball in support of baseball. Play Ball introduces youth to the skills necessary to play the game and helps develop skills in those who currently play the game. It also encourages an active and healthy lifestyle for children around the nation and lasts through August. For information on Play Ball, visit http://web.usabaseball.com/ playball.

Pembroke Lakes Tennis and Aquatics Center Now Offers Pickleball BY DEBBY TEICH

I

t has only been a few weeks since Pickleball was introduced at the Pembroke Lakes Tennis and Aquatics Center, 10500 Taft Street City, and it is already a big hit. People of all ages and athletic abilities have had an opportunity to try the sport, which combines ping pong, tennis, and badminton. “Pickleball is fun,” said Traci Richards, a Pickleball enthusiast who supervises the Pembroke Lakes Tennis and Aquatics Center. “It is a social game and easy to learn. Aside from having fun and laughing at ourselves, it is a great physical workout.” Pickleball is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fastpaced, competitive game for experienced players. It can be played either as singles or doubles. Players use a baseball-sized whiffle ball and a paddle on a court that is smaller than a tennis court. They volley the ball back and forth to score on the opposing team. Players must learn a unique set of Pickleball terms, such as “dillball, flabjack, v0ll3y llama, falafel, oPA! and pickledome.” In 1965, U.S. Congressman Joel Pritchard, William Bell, and Barney McCallum created Pickleball to provide a sport for the entire family. They named it after Pickles, the family dog. The sport currently has over 400,000 players in the United States, and many of them are in South Florida. There is even a USA Pickleball Association (USAPA), as well as tournaments and competitions. Pickleball was designed to be easy to learn and play whether you’re five, eighty-five or some-

where in between. It has become very popular among active senior adults, as well as among high schools and college students. The Pembroke Pines Pickleball courts are open seven days a week Monday through Friday, from 8am to 9pm; Saturday and Sunday, from 8am to 6pm. During the summer, Monday through Friday hours are 4pm to 8pm. Courts are lighted for evening play. Printed instructions on how to play Pickleball are available at the Tennis and Aquatic Center. Staff is also available to provide an overview of the Pickleball game. The fees are as follows: Pickleball: $3; Pickleball paddle rental: $3/session; Pickleball court rental: Drop-in play $5 (recommend reserving a court). A Pickleball 10-game punch card is available for $30 ($50 value) and is valid four months from the day of purchase. “Pickleball is so much fun,” said Harriett Weinstein, who switched from tennis to Pickleball after her 73rd birthday. “It is a great work out and very social. I play with my grandchildren and we have a great time together.” To sign up for the most up-to-date Pembroke Pines Pickleball information, send an email to TRichards@ppines.com. f you are looking for a way to escape the summer heat, visit the Paradise Cove Water Park. Located inside C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, it is the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division’s largest aquatics facility. It offers something for everyone, making it one of the best places in the area to cool off during the summer. “My kids want to go to the water park every weekend,” said Mary Bloom, who lives near the park. “They range in age from three to fourteen and there is something for everyone, including me. We meet friends there and typically stay from the time it opens to closing.” The park offers the following water-based activities: ▸▸ Paradise Pipeline features four five-story-tall waterslides that vary in length from 395 to 430 feet. More than 400 gallons of water per minute move riders through the corkscrew, until they exit into a four-foot-deep plunge pool. Riders must be 42 inches tall, weigh less than 250 pounds, and be able to swim. ▸▸ Sharky’s Lagoon is a water playground for all ages. It features an 18-inchdeep pool with three waterslides that vary in length from 83 feet to 125 feet, as well as other interactive play elements. ▸▸ Parrot’s Point is a water playground for ages 5 and under. It features a 12-inch-deep pool with two small waterslides and many other interactive play elements.

Paradise Pipeline

▸▸ Crazy Creek is a 410-foot-long, meandering tube ride with interactive play elements along the route. ▸▸ Swimming lessons are available at Paradise Cove from June through August. Dates vary. When visitors get hungry, they can visit the Paradise Grill or Sand Dollar for food and drinks. The water park also has 20’ diameter “Funbrellas” (capacity 30), picnic tables, and lockers for rent. All of this makes it a great place for small events, such as birthday parties, family gatherings, summer camp groups, and more. Paradise Cove is open April to October, from 10am - 5:20pm. There is a different schedule each month and the calendar is posted on the website. Admission fees are $10/person for all-day admission and $6.75/person after 3pm. Children under age one are admitted free. A season pass (Find It All card) is available for $76 per person. The park’s regular gate entrance fee of $1.50/person (children 5 and under free) is also in effect on weekends and holidays. Paradise Cove is located inside C.B. Smith Park, 900 N Flamingo Road. City Officials Cut the Ribbon at Jack McCluskey Rainbow Park COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

S

urrounded by neighbors, friends, family and city officials, Jack McCluskey was recently recognized for his involvement and commitment to the City of Pembroke Pines. Officials thanked him for his service, as they cut the ribbon for the new park named in his honor. Located at 9201 NW 19th Street in the Rainbow Lakes section of Pembroke Pines, Jack McCluskey Rainbow Park features eight lighted outdoor racquetball courts, a shaded walking/jogging/bike path, and a covered tot lot/playground.

“Today we recognize Jack for his past dedication and years of service to the City of Pembroke Pines,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “Jack has been involved at the highest level in our community and now he continues to serve as the City of Pembroke Pines Historian.” For the past 48 years, McCluskey has been a resident of Pembroke Pines, where he raised his family. He also served as a City Commissioner and three times as Vice Mayor. McCluskey’s service to Pembroke Pines began in 1969, when he served as a Charter Member and President of the Lakes Homeowners’ Association. During the next 40 years, McCluskey held positions on dozens of City boards and committees. In addition to serving three terms on the Commission, he served on the boards of the South Broward Drainage District and the Broward League of Cities. Among those attending the ceremony to honor Jack McCluskey were Gloria, his wife of 60 years; their three sons; and longtime friends and neighbors who moved into the Pasadena Lakes section of Pembroke Pines in the late 1960’s. The park dedication took on considerably more significance when friends attending told stories of the good old days and added up how many years they had been friends with Jack - 300 years and counting. Find Bargains at the Flea Market and Bazaar COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

B

argain hunters from near and far are expected to meet at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines for the Flea Market and Bazaar. They will have an opportunity to search through tables of treasures from over 100 venders in more than 53,000 square feet of air-conditioned, indoor comfort. The event will be held on August 19, from 8am-4pm, and August 20, from 9am-3pm. Admission and parking are free. Proceeds will benefit senior programs. “Over 100 indoor vendors will offer tens of thousands of items at flea market prices,” said Valerie Toth, Activities Events Specialist and Flea Market point person. “One man’s garbage is another man’s gold! But seriously, many vendors sell new items too. With the holidays approaching quicker than we care to think, some are selling their handmade arts & crafts too!” There will be thousands of household items, toys, clothing, new & estate jewelry, collectibles, bath soaps & scrubs, record albums, baseball cards, and much more. There will also be food available in Emilio’s Café. Buyers are encouraged to come early, since a large crowd of people always forms before the doors open. Most know what they are looking for and want to be the first to find it. The Flea Market and Bazaar is held four times a year (February, May, August, and November). It raises funds for programs at the Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center, which provides the community with a wide range of programs and activities that promote physical and mental stimulation, and encourage socialization, cultural education and intellectual enrichment. The Center is committed to offering quality comprehensive services and updated programs that respond to the changing needs of the diverse communities in Pembroke Pines. The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue, in Pembroke Pines. Membership for adults 18 and older is free, but required. Paladin Academy Students Donate Pet Supplies

SCHOOL NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

F

or the fourth year, students at Paladin Academy in Pembroke Pines presented a donation of pet food and supplies to Everglades Angels Dog Rescue. Representatives from the organization visited the school with a rescue dog to accept the donation. The school’s Friends with Animals Club organized the collection. The club, which is open to all students in kindergarten through 12th grade, meets twice a month throughout the year. Students focus on awareness about issues facing animals, especially those who are mistreated or abandoned, as well as shelters and programs designed to assist those in need. The students presented over $400 in donations, including leashes, collars, crates, gates and treats. Representatives of the rescue organization talked to the students about its mission and types of rescues. They also got to interact with Tanner, one of the animals they helped. They learned about Tanner’s personal journey,

including that he is a recent rescue without a home. “The students enjoyed visiting with Tanner,” said Duane Meece, assistant principal. “It helped to make the process they were helping to support appear more concrete and real. Through the presentation given by Everglades Angels Dog Rescue, students were able to follow this dog’s journey from being abandoned as a young puppy on the streets to current status.” The mission of Everglades Angels Dog Rescue is to end the suffering of thousands of abandoned dogs by rescuing them from rural and remote areas of Florida. They treat the rescued dogs medically, including sterilization and microchip identification. They also provide psychological training and placement in qualified homes. “Everglades Rescue is always grateful for the donations they receive and the awareness of the difficult, but rewarding, job they do,” said Meece.

Pembroke Pines Update

I

t is with great pride that I announce that the City of Pembroke Pines was awarded the “Outstanding Achievement Large City 2017 City Livability Award” in support of the Creative Placemaking at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. The award was presented to the City at the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ 85th Annual Meeting in Miami Beach. The award recognizes mayoral leadership in developing and implementing programs that improve the quality of life in America’s cities, focusing on the leadership, creativity, and innovation demonstrated by the mayors. This year’s winning cities were selected by former mayors from a pool of over 150 applicants. Also during the United States Conference of Mayors 85th Annual Meeting, I was honored to host a Small Business and Entrepreneurship Task Force meeting at the Mayor’s Café. Small businesses are the lifeblood of any city. We discussed strategies to help small businesses, and got advice on how small businesses can grow in today’s economy. This is an important issue for all residents in all cities, because small businesses not only meet our local needs and those of larger businesses, they create jobs and provide opportunities for others to succeed financially. I encourage everyone to please support their local businesses.

In a few weeks, families will be making the transition from the lazy days of summer to the 2017-2018 school year. It’s a time when parents often breathe a sigh of relief, and students and teachers anticipate new beginnings and new challenges. It’s also a time when motorists should slow down and proceed with caution in school zones, stop for buses and be alert for children walking in the street or biking to school. Parents can help by teaching their children safety rules, and supervising young children as they walk or bike to school or as they wait at the school bus stop. And, students should practice the safety rules for waiting at the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and riding the bus. If walking to school, they should learn and practice the safety rules for pedestrians, cross at cross walks, obey all traffic signs, traffic lights and safety patrol instructions. Although the summer is starting to wind down, I hope everyone still gets a chance to take some time to relax a bit and enjoy all the amenities the City of Pembroke Pines has to offer during our summer months. I encourage all Pines residents to visit the Recreation & Cultural Arts web page at www.ppines. com, check our calendars, and visit our Facebook page at www.facebook/ cityofpembrokepines for exciting events and programs that are planned for the coming months. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Lost In Translation? BY MAYLEIDYS PORRASPITA, ESQUIRE

H

ow important is it that the Mediator in your divorce case speaks your language and understands your culture? According to many attorneys, mediators and the parties themselves, it makes a big difference. During the mediation, both parties will be in the room with either their attorneys or on their own if they are selfrepresented. The Mediator will do a brief opening and give the parties an overview of the mediation process and what to guide them on what to expect. Each side will then have an opportunity to briefly describe their case and what they wish to obtain from the mediation. Often in family law cases the parties will then go into separate rooms in order to discuss privately with the Mediator the details of his or her case. This is an opportunity for each side to speak freely and openly as the Mediator has strict confidentiality requirements. If the mediator does not speak the same language as the party, an interpreter is in the room in order to translate. The interpreter has the duty to translate everything said, word for word.

However, we know that communication is not just verbal. How we say what we say makes a big difference for the recipient. In family law cases, the parties are often dealing with very emotional and personal issues involving their finances and their children. The Mediator is tasked with the duty to point out the strong points, as well as deficiencies on each side. Although the Mediator does not provide legal advice, he/she plays an important role that requires trust and openness with all the parties involved. When the Mediator must communicate with the parties via an interpreter, there is much lost in translation. There is a personal connection that is not achieved between the party being addressed and the Mediator. This loss is augmented when one side can communicate directly with the Mediator, while the other side must use the interpreter. This situation may foster distrust by the party and it can often hinder an amicable resolution. At times, language is not the only barrier, but also culture and customs. A bilingual Mediator will likely also be familiar with two different cultures and will be better equipped to know how to handle what may appear as offensive or inappropriate for a particular party. Additionally, some people have a preference between a male mediator or a female mediator, which can also be requested when the mediation is scheduled. When selecting a Mediator, it is important to consider not only the experience of the Mediator, but also additional factors in order to maximize the chances of reaching a successful resolution. If you are facing a problem that can potential lead you to court, consider mediation and all the options that this alternative mode of dispute resolution can provide. What Is Divorce Planning? BY EVAN BARON

O

ver the past several years, it has come to my attention that many couples who are considering a dissolution of marriage are attempting to initiate the process in a more civilized manner. Instead of retaining an attorney, filing for the dissolution and serving their spouse, they first seek to try and resolve it by reaching an agreement. This process obviously has many possible advantages. It is obviously less costly, since the costs of litigation can be expensive. By dissolving the marriage in a rational manner, it usually leaves the couple on much friendlier terms after it is finalized. Most importantly, the couple is able to decide what is best for them and what is best for their children, instead of being told what is best by a judge. I am not suggesting that this process can work in all cases, but there certainly seems to be a movement towards this manner of resolution. A couple who wishes to resolve their marriage by negotiation should deal with each other in good faith. If there are hidden assets or attempts to gain an advantage in the negotiation, a fair and equitable resolution will not be reached. In some relationships, one party may be the person in charge of finances and, as such, may have greater knowledge of the financial position of the parties.

It is important to understand that once an agreement is signed, it is binding on both parties and very difficult to set aside. A settlement without all the information and without proper advice can often lead to inequitable results. I suggest that even if it is the intention of both parties to settle their dissolution without litigation, it is still beneficial to retain an attorney to counsel you. Of course, one attorney cannot represent both parties, but getting attorney’s involved to insure that the agreement that is reached is equitable and consistent with Florida Law can be a great benefit. I have been retained by several individuals who are in the process of negotiating a settlement with their spouse. They are seeking my guidance and expertise to assist them in reaching an equitable and lawful agreement. Most individuals do not have knowledge of certain aspects of the law and, as such, it is to their benefit to have counsel. Once an attorney is retained, a possible settlement can be discussed. Financial information can be required to insure that there is full financial disclosure. After discussing a possible agreement with the client, a proposal can be sent to either opposing counsel or, if not represented, the other spouse. This will start the negotiation process without the stress of time limitations and potential litigation. I call the above process Divorce Planning and I suggest anyone contemplating a dissolution should consider this as the starting point. If negotiations fail, the more traditional method will still be available. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. Multidimensional Approach to Facial Rejuvenation

s a person ages, there is a loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, alteration in the skeletal framework, and a progressive loss, or atrophy, of facial fat. These alterations in skin, fat, and bone result in distinctive changes in facial appearance. Increased skin laxity, prominence of the nasolabial folds and jowls, increased depth, and number of facial wrinkles characterize the aging face. A youthful face is fuller, more angular, with high cheekbones, a distinctive jawline, and smooth skin. To achieve the optimal result in facial rejuvenation, it is necessary to address all the underlying elements that affect the appearance of the face. There are four areas to treat skin surface, laxity or excess skin, soft tissue support structure, and biochemical composition within the skin. The first is the skin surface - fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and skin texture. This area is rejuvenated through typical skin treatments, such as sublative eMatrix laser therapy, chemical peels and microdermabrasion and Botox® and Dysport®, as well as topical creams, such as Retin A, glycolic based products, and moisturizers that contain Hyaluronic acid. These products help diminish fine facial wrinkles and improve pigmentation. The second area to address is skin looseness or laxity, as well as skin excess. When redundant skin creates deep folds and jowls, the excess skin should be removed. There are multiple face-lifting techniques. The specific procedure should be adapted to the individual patient’s anatomy through a minifacelift or full facelift, or modification of these procedures such as an “S” lift or lifestyle lift. Thirdly, the soft tissue structure that supports the skin may need to be enhanced. Fat grafting adds volume that is lost as a result of atrophy of facial fat and descent of supporting soft tissue. During the early stages of facial aging, soft tissue fillers, such as Juvederm® (Voluma and Vollure), Restylane® (Refyne and Defyne), and Radiesse® can accomplish this as well. Finally, an area that most surgeons and patients neglect is the skin, the organ. The biochemical makeup of the skin is affected by what we eat and put into our bodies. Omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants aid in restoring a healthy appearance to the skin. Consuming foods high in essential fatty acids, vitamins A, C, D, and E and antioxidants make the skin appear more youthful. Avoiding sun exposure and not smoking also improves skin appearance. To summarize, as we age, the alterations that take place resulting in an aging appearance are multifactorial. Because of this, treatment options must also address all these components – the skin surface, skin excess, structural support, and the skin composition. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. F

oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries that occur during the teenage years may manifest themselves later on in life. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery may be used to treat conditions such as chronic joint pain and swelling, arthritis and bone spurs, loose bone and cartilage fragments, still or scarred joints, as well as ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages of arthroscopic surgery include faster recovery, less pain and swelling, avoids large incisions, low risk of infection, it’s an outpatient procedure, and provides a quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible. Nathan D. Vela, DPM, MPH, is Board Certified in Foot Surgery and Reconstructive Rearfoot & Ankle Surgery, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a foot and ankle surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. LEGALLY SPEAKING

Special Trusts for Special People BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

If you are the parents of a child with special needs, such as a mental or physical disability, you face the challenge of providing for them while you are alive, as well as seeing that they are taken care of after you are gone. The expenses of caring for a family member with special needs can be overwhelming, and ongoing medical care may not be covered by private insurance plans. State and local governments offer assistance, but it is subject to strict financial eligibility requirements. So what can a parent of a child with special needs do (or not do) to assure adequate care throughout their lifetime, yet not disqualify them from government assistance? First, it is important that parents, grandparents, and others be discouraged from establishing custodial accounts for a minor child with special needs. Why? Because once the minor child reaches adulthood, distribution from the custodial account may disqualify them from government services. A well-meaning grandparent’s act of generosity can actually do more harm than good. The same disqualification applies if a child with special needs is left assets outright or through a trust. What about leaving money to a trusted relative to be held on behalf of a beneficiary? While that sounds like a reasonable plan, the relative could lose the inheritance through their own divorce, bankruptcy, lawsuits or simply by mismanaging the assets. In addition, should the selected relative die, the inheritance becomes part of their own estate. Fortunately, the government has established rules allowing assets to be held for the benefit of an individual with special needs, without risking their eligibility for government assistance, in a trust called a “special needs” or “supplemental needs” trust. How does this work? A special needs trust preserves government benefit eligibility while at the same time providing assets that can meet the additional needs of the person with a disability that goes beyond provisions for the basic needs and limited medical and long-term support and services of Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These life-enhancing expenditures can include: supplemental education and training; out-of-pocket medical and dental services; transportation (including purchase and maintenance of a vehicle); travel and vacations; hobbies and recreation; purchases such as computers, electronics, and furniture; personal care aide; athletic training and completion; and special dietary needs. Most importantly, a special needs trust must be designed specifically to supplement, not replace, public benefits. Funds from a special needs trust cannot be distributed directly to the disabled beneficiary. Rather, funds must be disbursed to third parties who provide goods and services for the use and enjoyment by the beneficiary. Often, supplemental needs trusts are funded with life insurance proceeds, thereby providing resources exactly when they are needed. Special needs trusts are a critical component of your estate planning if you have a child or grandchild with disabilities. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

COOKOUT DAISY AWARD

SEEN ON SCENE

Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale honored Sheila Kasel with the 2017 DAISY Award, which pays tribute to the superhuman work nurses do for patients and families every day. A resident of Pembroke Pines and a Holy Cross Associate for nine years, Kasel serves in the Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Center. She received her award after saving a patient’s life when she noticed an irregular pattern of blood pressure drops following an angioplasty procedure.

Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief and Pembroke Pines Commissioner Iris Siple celebrated the end of the school year with a cookout at Children’s Harbor. Children’s Harbor provides a safe, nurturing place to call ‘home’ for 24 siblings and 11 teen mothers involved in the foster care system. The children enjoyed a BBQ lunch and a piñata filled with candy.

Subaru of Pembroke Pines took their mantra “Subaru Loves Pets” to a whole new level by hosting their 2nd Subaru of Pembroke Pines Dog Appreciation Day Pawty. The event celebrated all breeds, pure and mixed, while creating public awareness for dogs that need to be rescued.

BRIGHT STEPS FORWARD Founded in 2005 to help families in need, Bright Steps Forward, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission to ensure that ALL children in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties with neurological or developmental disorders have access to top quality special needs education and therapeutic interventions so they may achieve their maximum potential. Bright Steps Forward operates a fully accredited therapeutic learning center for children with special needs that serves children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Unlike public school classrooms, the class sizes in our learning centers are small and children are grouped according to their needs. Bright Steps Forward’s academic program follows the Sunshine State Standards and we include other programs to enrich the curriculum. What sets our therapeutic learning centers apart from other special needs programs is our ability to provide intensive ABA, PT, OT and speech therapies during or after the tutoring sessions so that each child can blossom socially, physically as well as cognitively.
