It’s Time to Go Back to School
S
ummer is coming to an end even earlier this year! August 15th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. So, for parents, that means it is time to stock up on school supplies, help your child pick out that lucky lunch box, and remind him or her to finish their summer reading list.
It’s also time to register for after school enrichment programs. There are a myriad of different activities and opportunities, with everything from sports to music and everything in between. Parents also have choices in how their kids are educated. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, a parent must now decide between enrolling their child at their local school, charter school, private school or online learning. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational and enrichment programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to language lessons to Little League. The material has been curated to provide parents with a useful guide to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year. In the meantime, enjoy the last couple weeks of summer break. We’ll be back to school before you know it. Sincerely,
Christy and Terry Jaillet Christy & Terry Jaillet Publishers

Children’s Harbor Hosts Cap & Gown Ceremony BY DEBBY TEICH
T
he end of school is a time to celebrate academic achievements and graduations, including at Children’s Harbor in Pembroke Pines. Children’s Harbor recently hosted its 5th Annual Academic Achievement Awards ceremony at the Performing and Cultural Arts Center to recognize the academic accomplishments of the 37 foster care children who call it “home.” As the students crossed the stage wearing the ceremonial cap and gown, they were celebrated for their accomplishments this year, whether they graduated from high school or simply conquered fourth grade long division. “Our Academic Achievement Awards event is such a special time as we highlight the outstanding children of Children’s Harbor,” said Tiffani Dhooge, COO. “We are so proud of all of their accomplishments.” Children’s Harbor maintains a strong educational focus through its Academic & Life Skills Program. Children enter the foster care system lagging behind in school due to sporadic attendance, changes in placement and trauma in the home. The Academic & Life Skills Program sets children on a structured path toward academic success and self-sufficiency. This year, 100% of the children residing at Children’s Harbor have been promoted to the next grade, a tremendous accom-
plishment for these vulnerable children. The children celebrated their graduation and academic achievements with a boat ride along the Intracoastal. Children’s Harbor founder Bill Mahoney treated the children to a Graduation Dinner Cruise on his yacht. “When a child experiences trauma, it significantly impacts their academic performance,” said Dhooge. “We are so proud of their accomplishments during the school year and grateful to Mr. Mahoney for always looking for ways to champion and celebrate our children.” It was also announced during the cruise that Children’s Harbor was awarded a $15,000 grant from New York Life through its Community Impact Grant Program. “We are thrilled to award a $15,000 grant to Children’s Harbor in recognition of Bill Mahoney’s philanthropic leadership,” said Lacey Siegel, NY Life communications and media. “From all of the applications, Children’s Harbor’s rose to the top because of the compelling need for funding in the community and the organization’s incredible commitment to the cause – two key components in our decision for funding.
n Established in 1996, Children’s Harbor is a nationally accredited nonprofit agency with a mission to provide a safe harbor and support to at risk children, youth, and families-keeping brothers and sisters together, strengthening families, and guiding youth towards independence. associated with vein disease that other doctors cannot address. We offer the Picoway laser, one of the best and fastest lasers available to remove tattoos and skin spots and discolorations. It also works well at smoothing wrinkles, erasing acne scars and other scars. In a matter of minutes, the Picoway can smooth wrinkles, build collage and remove discolorations and refine scars. Describe your (Dr. Fox) experience. I (Dr. Fox) trained at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. I started the first Vascular Medicine Department and Vein Center at University Hospital’s Before Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. I have been featured as a vein and laser expert nationally and internationally, and have been on multiple news programs in America After and Latin America. Fox Vein and Laser Experts has served as a training facility for multiple national corporations. Why should patients visit Fox Vein and Laser Experts vs. other practices? We are recognized experts in the field of vein disease and lasers. We have certified ultrasonographers that provide in depth vascular exams and offer excellent care and service to our patients. I was one of the first physicians to perform Endovenous Laser Ablations in Ohio and nationally. I was one of the first in Florida to perform Clarivein procedures and have been performing ultrasound
guided sclerotherapy and foam for decades. Describe some of the procedures you offer? We offer the newest and best miniammly invasive vein procedures, including Endvenous laser Ablation, Venaseal, Veingogh, Laser spider vein removal, Phlebectomies, Foam sclerotherapy and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy. Most of these procedures are performed in under 30 minutes with often no incisions necessary to remove those unsightly veins. We also offer hair removal, spot removal and spider vein removal with the Gentle Max Pro laser. This is one of the best and fastest lasers on the market to remove unwanted hair on any skin color. We also offer tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation with the Picoway Laser. This laser removes tattoos much faster than others on the market and uses vibrational energy to shatter the ink particles, so the ink goes away much faster than other nano lasers. Resolve by Picoway shrinks pores, tightens skin, erases acne scars and sun spots and discolorations while building collagen with little to no down time. It is literally a lunchtime make over. Where are the procedures performed? All vein procedures are done in the office, most in less than 30 minutes. We can get rid of those large varicose veins, and pain and swelling, during your lunch break. What is vein disease and how does it progress? Veins are blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart. When the valves in the veins are not working correctly, instead of all the blood going back to the heart, some drips slowly downward causing the blood to pool and the legs to feel heavy, achy and
Diagnosis and & Laser Procedures tired. The legs start to look more and more discolored and more veins appear and the ankles start to turn blue and brown. Over time, the ankles swell and the skin scars down and hardens. The veins bulge more and more, and more skin changes occur. Venous eczema develops and gradually people can get lipodermatosclerosis, atrophie blanche and ulcers. Bleeding veins are also a problem, and the bleeding is very difficult to control. What should people do about

vein disease? Patients should call for a consultation and have an ultrasound to diagnose the source of their vein problems. Until the appointment, patients should elevate their legs, wear compression hose, and take antiinflammatories for their pain. Why do people remove tattoos? People are often very excited when they get a tattoo. However, over time, this happiness can fade. Having the reminder of an ex or something that one is no longer involved with is not appealing. Many times, people want to climb the corporate ladder and various companies have policies about covering or removing tattoos in visible areas. Some people want
more space for more ink. Some tattoos are done wrong and people are not happy from the beginning. Whatever the reason for removal, Picoway laser is the best tattoo removal laser out there. It removes all colors of ink on any skin type faster and better. It removes the tattoos in fewer treatment sessions and with less pain than other lasers. What else is Picoway used for besides tattoos? Resolve by Picoway is used to remove skin discolorations with aging. It helps build collagen, fade sun spots, refine pores, tighten skin and reduce wrinkles. It is also used to fade spots and help tighten and refine the décolleté and people’s hands. It is FDA approved for the removal of acne scars and can help fade and refine scars of all types especially after breast augmentation, C-sections and tummy tucks. Picoway is fast, effective and has really no down time. You look amazing almost immediately. What does the Gentle Max Pro Laser do? It can remove spider veins, sun spots or discolorations, and is amazing at removing unwanted hair. It has one of the largest spot sizes on the market and can remove hair super fast with little to no pain on every skin color. As well, it works great for laser facials and building collagen.

Pembroke Pines Residents Celebrate Independence Day BY DEBBY TEICH

amilies and friends gathered throughout Pembroke Pines to honor the nation’s birthday and celebrate Independence Day. Several thousand people attended the celebration at the Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds, sponsored by the City of Pembroke Pines. Residents relaxed on blankets and lawn chairs, as they listened to the sounds of the Pocket Change band, enjoyed treats from the Food Truck Round Up, and watched the fireworks show. There were also rides, games, art projects and other activities for the kids. “There’s no better place to be on the 4th of July than at the City of Pembroke Pines celebration,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “It’s a fun night for all ages and a safe way to enjoy fireworks.” At another celebration, over 500 people participated in an all-American afternoon during the Annual July 4th B-Bar-Q at the City of Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center. Members enjoyed a BBQ lunch, entertainment and dancing. Student volunteers from Pembroke Pines Charter, Flanagan High School, West Broward High Schools and The Center assisted members in finding their seats and delivering dessert. Members arrived dressed in their finest red, white and blue in hopes of winning the “Best Patriotic” outfit contest.

n addition to improving the look of the neighborhood and the community at large, nice landscaping can help increase property values. Plants also help to increase oxygen, reduce air and visual pollution, and control soil erosion. In an effort to promote quality landscaping within Pembroke Pines, the City sponsored the 7th Annual Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award contest, which was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident, business woman and nature-lover, who tragically lost her life in July of 2011. Contest winners were recently announced at a City of Pembroke Pines City Commission meeting. Applicants provided a brief description of their property, its landscaping, how it met the goals of the Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest and attached photographs. Members of the Pembroke Pines Environmental Advisory Board judged the yards on five components: Butterfly (the preservation of all stages of a butterfly’s life), Design and Function, Maintenance, Florida Friendly Value, and Use of Hardscapes. Each of the components was worth 20 points. They were added together to reach the final score for the property. All entries had to attain a minimum score of 70 to be to be eligible for an award and the highest score per district won the award.
The Advisory Board selected one winner from each City Commission district, plus one overall winner. The winners were: ► District 1: Anthony Todaro ► District 2: Kim Ramdin ► District 3: Gregory Milu ► District 4: Joseph Zappia ► District at Large: Jean H. Growing Pains In Children BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.
F
oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems.
Causes:
▸▸ Excessively flat feet or feet that point to the outside. ▸▸ Children that are knock-kneed. ▸▸ Tight muscles, especially the calf, hamstrings and external rotator muscles of the hips.
Symptoms: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸
Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the shinbone. Premature fatigue with activity. General avoidance of activity and sports. Leg pain, especially at night. Lower back pain. Often associated with toe walkers. Many children who have been diagnosed with growing pains have primary causes that can be addressed with great success. Many of these children are not able to keep up with their peers during activity due to pain and premature fatigue and ultimately this may affect their self-esteem. They become more likely to sit at home and work with computers and are less likely to participate in sports. Inactive
children usually become inactive adults who may be overweight. It is critical to understand why these children or teenagers are having leg discomfort and not have the problem brushed off as growing pains.
Treatment may include:
▸▸ Changing of shoe gear to add more support. ▸▸ Physical therapy to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength, coordination and reaction time. ▸▸ Custom molded orthotic (sole inserts) to realign the lower extremity. In many cases this will almost overnight eliminate a lot of the leg pains that these children experience. ▸▸ Casting the leg to stretch the calf muscle may be needed. Early identification of predisposing causes to these growing pains is important to the child and teenager’s overall health and wellness. Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. He specializes in treatment of infants, children, teens and adults with injuries, pain and deformities. His associates, Doctors Messina, Cohen, DeSimone, Moya, Bertot, Shenassa, Jones and Goodner, care for all musculoskeletal injuries from head to toe. Flanagan’s Interact Club Members Conduct Rotary Meeting BY DEBBY TEICH
S
ix officers from the Interact Club at Flanagan High School recently presented their accomplishments for the past year and goals for next year to members of the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines, which sponsors the club. The club’s faculty advisor, Robert Johnson, also received a token of appreciation from Rotary for the outstanding job he did in helping the students organize their club and guiding their activities. “It was a great leadership experience for the students,” said Gail Quigley, Rotary member. “They had a chance to plan, organize, and implement a program. They also had an opportunity to share their goals for their Club and to see how they are a part of mission of Rotary International.” The goal of Interact clubs is to bring together young people, ages 12-18, to develop leadership skills, while discovering the power of Service Above Self. Interact clubs organize at least two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. Rotary club sponsors mentor and guide Interactors as they carry out projects and develop leadership skills. “It’s important to give back to the community because if you don’t, who will,” said Joslynn Gomez, 17, who was club president last year and will remain in the position for next year. “We appreciate everything that has been given to us and we always want to give back.” This was the first year Flanagan had an Interact Club. Some of their accomplishments included: ▸▸ Collected 450+ articles of clothing for His House Orphanage. ▸▸ Collected over 500 hygiene products for victims of Hurricane Maria. ▸▸ Partnered with Joyful Heart for community service hours. Club members played games and interacted with the elderly on a weekly basis. ▸▸ Tutored in math and reading for elementary school students that live in Falls of Pembroke.

▸▸ Coordinated a tailgate for staff and their families during homecoming. ▸▸ Provided ongoing support to local hospitals. ▸▸ Fundraised over $400. The students also reviewed their goals for the upcoming year. They included: ▸▸ Provide at least 250 hours to every member (40 are needed to graduate high school). ▸▸ Host an international service project, such as one that aids children or addresses horrific conditions in struggling countries. ▸▸ Open up a school store where students can get school supplies that are needed for assignments. One does not currently exist. ▸▸ Have a student participate in a study abroad program. ▸▸ Achieve their fundraising goal of $1,500. ▸▸ Donate a minimum of 1,000 items to charities around the world. ▸▸ Have fun, make friends, and change the world! PET CARE
Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke DR. JOHANNA M. BUSTTER OWNER AND VETERINARIAN AT LAGUNA ISLES ANIMAL HOSPITAL s the summer weather heats up with temperatures rising over 90 degrees on a daily basis, even in a shaded area, and even worse inside a non-ventilated car, the heat can quickly affect your pet and cause serious complications. Heat exhaustion in pets can lead to serious and potentially fatal conditions such as heat stroke and cardiac arrest. Unlike people, dogs do not sweat or perspire out excess body heat. Panting is the most efficient way that pets have to regulate their body temperature, but even this is not enough when weather temperatures are too high. Heat exhaustion can occur when the body temperatures becomes elevated above the normal temperature, 103 degrees or higher. Once the temperature reaches 106 degrees or higher, your pet is in the danger zone for heat stroke. During heat stroke, the organs begin to shut down and their heart could stop. What are the signs of heat stroke? ▸▸ Rapid heart rate ▸▸ Excessive panting ▸▸ Excessive drooling ▸▸ Dizziness or lack of coordination ▸▸ Lethargy or weakness ▸▸ Vomiting and/or diarrhea ▸▸ Convulsions and muscle tremors (in severe cases) What should I do if I suspect heat stroke on my pet? ▸▸ Check temperature using a thermometer rectally. ▸▸ If temperature is over 106 degrees, place pet in a cold bath and call your veterinarian immediately. While transporting him, wrap pet on a cold wet towel. ▸▸ If temperature is between 103 and 105.9 degrees, place pet in a cold bath and check temperatures often. Once it is 102 degrees, get your pet out of the bath and dry thoroughly. Temperatures can keep dropping way after pet has been removed from cold bath. Temperature should not drop less than 98.9 degrees. Do not force your pet to drink water or give them ice cubes. ▸▸ Take pet to veterinarian to be examined. Even if your pet’s temperature is back to normal and your pet seems to be recovering, they may have dehydration or have other complications. What is the best way to prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke? All dogs are at risk of overheating if left exposed to the sun but some breeds are at higher risk of overheating than other. This includes dogs with thick coats or long hair, puppies and geriatric dogs, overweight, respiratory and heart medical conditions and brachycephalic breeds (pugs, boxers and bulldogs). ▸▸ Prevent leaving pets outside in extreme hot weather. ▸▸ Provide shaded areas with water accessible if pet lives outdoors. ▸▸ Never leave your pet inside a parked car, not even on in the shade with windows down ▸▸ If you exercise your pet make sure to do it in the cooler hours of the day. Always have water available and you may want to have a cooling vest to keep pet cool. ▸▸ Limit pet’s exercise or outdoor activity on excessively hot days. ▸▸ Long hair dogs may benefit from a shorter hair cut in the hotter months. ▸▸ If power goes out keep pet in a cool ventilated area with plenty of water. Transfer pet to a friend’s home or kennel facility until power is restored. Keeping your pet cool and protected during the hot days will guaranteed you a safe and fun summer with your beloved furry friend.

ASK THE MAYOR
Pembroke Pines Update FAMILY & GERIATRIC MEDICINE
BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS ur students will be returning to school this month after their summer break. I wish everyone a very happy and interesting new school year. We’re very excited about a new program that was recently launched and will begin again with the new school year from our Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Community Risk Reduction personnel for our younger students. It’s a program presented in elementary schools throughout the City to help second graders learn all about fire safety and prevention. Statistics show that the majority of structure fires in homes caused by play were started by males (83%). Forty-three percent of the fires were started by a child under age six. Older children were more likely to start outside fires, with two of five (38%) of all outside or unclassified fires started by a child between the ages of 10 and 12. Many of these fires are started accidentally due to curiosity. These statistics are startling. This program allows students to advance in their education at a young age, building a strong foundation of knowledge to prevent fire setting. The best interventions involve a combination of child, parental and peer education. Focusing on second graders through this program is a great way to share this important information.

Along with classroom presentations and discussions, the team also includes handouts that are given to the teachers for children to share at home. The handouts provide information on instructions for a fire escape plan, a fact sheet on smoke alarms and how to maintain them, fire fighter coloring sheets, Sparky the Dog puzzles and mazes, and a Learn Not to Burn review. Let’s also keep an eye out for school zones and make sure we all follow school bus safety. We want everyone to be safe and start the school year on a positive note. Please remember that we are still in hurricane season and are quickly approaching our most active time of the year. I hope everyone has their hurricane plans in place and is taking steps to prepare. This also includes pruning trees and landscaping now before a storm is on our door step. Be sure to visit our hurricane preparedness information at www.ppines.com/hurricane to help you in your preparations. There are helpful tips, informational videos, resources etc. covering every aspect of making sure we are storm safe. On a final note, there are many exciting activities, events and programs taking place throughout the city this month and every month. They are all listed with full information on our city website at www.ppines.com. The Value of Fat in Cosmetic Surgery BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he future of plastic surgery lies in stem cell science and optimization of fat grafting for soft tissue augmentation. For years, patients focused on eliminating fat. Today, fat (or adipose) cells are utilized for restoration of soft tissue volume loss that occurs with aging. Recent advancements in stem cell isolation have led to the application of stem cell enriched fat grafts. A fat transfer involves harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through a lipo-aspiration procedure, then separating the fat cells from the accompanying serum into a pure fat cell graft for transfer to the face, body, or breasts to restore soft tissue volume. Research has shown that when fat cells are enriched with stem cells to form culture expanded adipose desired stem cells (ASC), there is a higher quantity and quality of newly formed adipose and connective tissue. With this technique, the amount of fat which survives after a lipofilling procedure improves to 80 – 90% with more predictable and long-lasting results. Fat cells survive in the range of 50 – 75% with present techniques requiring over correction of the soft tissue defect to ensure proper enhancement. The term stem cell when used in advertisements for facelifts and hair transplants is not applicable, because stem cells haven’t been isolated clinically for these procedures. Using the term ‘stem cell facelifts’ is an attempt by the advertiser to mislead patients into thinking they are receiving a new cutting-edge procedure. Scientifically, fat cells do contain immature stem cells, as well as platelet rich plasma, which have a higher portion of stem cells than plasma alone. When fat is injected into the face, theoretically a small concentration of stem cells may be present in the newly grafted fat. For buttock enhancement, autologous fat transfer procedure has become the procedure of choice to improve size, shape, and lifting of the buttocks. In recent years, fat grafts have been used in breast reconstruction procedures, both for post-mastectomy reconstruction and post breast augmentation contour irregularities. Autologous fat grafting procedures are being utilized for primary breast augmentation more often for women who desire a small increase in breast size and fullness. The technique is still being studied to determine its long-term effects, including issues with mammography and subsequent breast cancer detection. The techniques for maximizing results in fat transfer have evolved over the past several years. With ongoing research and clinical application, fat will be used universally for soft tissue augmentation and become the gold standard for such procedures. Dr. Messa is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and has achieved the award Black Diamond with Allergan. As a Black Diamond Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Messa is in the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume.

Life Can Change in an Instant More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.
BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE ime and time again, we are reminded that life can change in an instant. Perhaps it’s the story of your best friend’s dad simply getting the mail when he had a massive heart attack. Or the cousin who was killed by a drunk driver on their way home from work. How often do we think, “We do not know what life may bring.” Another tragic reminder is the string of national mass killings over the last few years. Whether in our own Parkland or Fort Lauderdale backyards, in a nightclub in Orlando, an elementary school in Newtown, a church in Charleston or a country music festival in Las Vegas, we are reminded that life can change in the blink of an eye. What all of these tragedies have in common is that left behind were devastated families, friends and communities. People, just living their lives, had no idea their souls would be leaving this earth. We can all agree that life does not always go the way you expected. Plans put off until later, may never happen. Other life events may provide a burst of motivation encouraging you to think about your own mortality sooner rather than later. Perhaps a health scare or seeing the aftermath of the death of a friend or family member.

As an attorney specializing in wills and trusts, I see first hand what may happen to a family after an unexpected death. During a very emotional time, a grieving family is left to clean up the legal and financial mess left behind. But the majority of my estate planning practice focuses on helping clients prospectively prepare to take care of their family and assets after they are gone. I offer counsel regarding the best estate plan for their unique needs. As a caring and responsible parent or spouse, there are things you should think about and take care of. Now. Let’s start with your minor children. Have you thought about who will care for them if you are not around? What about financial support? Do you know if you have the right amount, and the right type, of life insurance for your particular family needs? What about college? How will that be paid for? Do you help look after or support your parents? What will happen to them if you are not around? Now, think for a moment about what your final wishes for your family might be. How do you want to leave assets to your heirs? Are there charities you wish to contribute to? Who will inherit your business and real estate? There are many other questions to consider. Perhaps the lesson to be learned from tragedy is to always try to live a good life full of kindness and gratitude, and to remember to love and cherish our families and friends every day. The reality is that we do not know what the future holds. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. Vitality Dental Group Helps Patients Achieve Beautiful and Healthy Smiles BY DEBBY TEICH
V
itality Dental Group is a family-owned and operated general and cosmetic dental office that prides itself on providing high quality dental care in a comfortable and patient-centric environment. Doctors and staff use the latest techniques, materials, and procedures to provide patients with the dental care they need in order to achieve and maintain a lifetime of healthy smiles. Vitality Dental Group has offices conveniently located in Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Jorge I. Solano, DMD, and Jessica M. Navarro, DMD, both owners and General Dentists, answered some commonly asked questions about the practice. Describe your practice. We offer virtually all general and cosmetic dental procedures to help patients achieve and maintain beautiful smiles. Some of these include: crowns, bridges, extractions, root canals up to and including full-mouth rehabilitation with implants, and teeth-in-a-day concepts. We also provide cosmetic procedures, such as
Zoom teeth whitening and Invisalign orthodontic treatment, to achieve the beautiful white smiles patients want. What distinguishes your practice from the competition? We are a family-owned and operated dental office. This is not a large group or corporate dental office where the patient will see a different doctor every time they come in for an appointment. We pride ourselves on delivering quality care and will always stand behind any work or product we deliver. When did you open? Our Pembroke Pines office has been around since the 1970s. Dr. Solano began seeing patients in 2008, as the previous doctor transitioned into retirement. In May 2017, we opened a centrally-located office in Plantation. The new office makes it even more convenient for patients to obtain the oral care they need with the same level of customer service they’ve come to expect from us. Do you offer evening appointments? Yes. We offer evening appointments

ooking for the perfect gift? Chances are you will find it at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center during the Annual Flea Market and Bazaar or Fall Arts and Crafts Show, held in more than 54,000 square feet of air-conditioned, indoor comfort. Both events benefit the City of Pembroke Pines senior services programs. Admission and parking are free. Flea Market and Bazaar Bargain hunters will have an opportunity to search through tables of treasures from over 100 vendors. The event will be held on August 18, from 8am to 4pm, and on August 19, from 9am to 3pm. There will be thousands of household items, toys, clothing, new & estate jewelry, collectibles, bath soaps & scrubs, record albums, baseball cards, unique arts/crafts and much more. There will also be food available in Emilio’s Café. Buyers are encouraged to come early, since a large crowd of people always forms before the doors open. Fall Arts and Crafts Show It is not too early to begin shopping for the holidays at the 12th Annual City of Pembroke Pines Community Services Fall Arts and Crafts Show. It will be held on September 22, from 9am to 4pm,
and September 23, from 10am to 4pm. There will be more than 70 vendors, including many new ones. Visitors will find photography, children’s books written by a local author, handmade soaps, lotions & candles, a large variety of hand sewn fabric crafts (placemats, aprons, kitchen towels, napkins, table runners, children’s tutu’s, headbands, etc.), acrylic and oil paintings on canvas and other items, pottery, knitted baby items, knitted accessories, crochet clothing and accessories, children’s clothing and accessories, hand crafted cold porcelain dolls, handmade doll clothes, etched yard stones, paper quilling, handcrafted stationery, handcrafted holiday items, hand carved wooden crafts, hand crafted jewelry, glass mosaic pieces and much more. The show also features pottery from the Empty Bowls group, comprised of students from the Community Center’s day and evening Pottery Studio program. The Artists in Action donate their time, talent and supplies to help feed the “empty bowls” of the hungry. The proceeds from the sale of their pottery will benefit the Community Center’s annual Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive for needy families in the community.
Instructor Leroy Daniels will be demonstrating the pottery wheel throughout the arts and crafts show, allowing patrons the opportunity to understand the processes that the artists go through to create their finished works. The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue, in Pembroke Pines. Membership for adults 18 and older is free, but required. LEGALLY SPEAKING
Can I Modify? BY EVAN BARON here is a phrase which is often heard in family law circles, which is: “You are really never divorced if you have children.” Of course, this is an exaggeration, but there is certainly some truth to that statement. The reality is that issues concerning children, such as support, time sharing, and parental responsibility can be modified (changed) under the right circumstances. Those circumstances would require “an unanticipated, involuntary, substantial change of circumstance.” A party cannot just change his/her mind after an Agreement is reached. You cannot just ask for a “do over.” As an example: a parent cannot quit his or her job for a new job which pays less, and then request a reduction in child support. In addition, a parent cannot intentionally have his or employment terminated for cause (wrong doing) and then request a reduction in support because he/she is not working or has obtained a lower paying job. The above two examples are voluntary and therefore does not meet the criteria for a modification. If, however, parents are terminated through no fault of their own or become disabled, they can request a modification, because the change is not voluntary. Time sharing can also be modified if it meets the same criteria and the court believes a change is in a child’s best interests. Parents are permitted to relocate within 50 miles from the address they are residing in at the time an Agreement (Parenting Plan) is reached. However, this change, although permitted by law, can still result in the need for a modification of the time-sharing schedule. If, for example, the parents were residing in close proximity to one another and therefore were exercising equal time sharing, a 50-mile change of residence can be substantial. How will a parent who now may reside a distance from a child’s school get the child to class on time? How will a parent who resides a distance away be able to do pick up or drop off on a timely basis? Assuming this relocation was not anticipated at the time the Parenting Plan was entered into, a modification may be in the child’s best interests and therefore necessary. Sometimes, however, these changes are anticipated and included in the Parenting Plan. I represented a divorced Dad who at the time the Parenting Plan was signed, was working in another state. He however anticipated returning to South Florida in a few years. It was therefore an anticipated change which was stated in the Parenting Plan. It further stated that upon returning to the area his time sharing would automatically be modified to a 50/50 schedule. If that was not included in the original agreement, he might have been unable to prove an unanticipated change and litigation could have been the result. It is important to make sure that any Agreement entered into is clearly written and includes any anticipated change known at that time.
