Hurricane Irma

I

t has been a couple of weeks since those dreadful days. We saw our lights go out, the water come in (and out) and the winds blow. For the most part, however, we were ready. We closed our shutters, prepared our hurricane kits, filled our gas cans and gathered our insurance papers. Some of us evacuated, while others hunkered down and waited for whatever Mother Nature was going to bring. Our community did not come out unscathed, but mercifully the center of the storm avoided us this time. After seeing the near total devastation on the Caribbean island of Barbuda, some of us feel a bit lucky. One of the true honors of publishing this magazine is being able to tell the stories of members of our community doing incredible things. We have already heard countless selfless acts from “Hurricane Heroes” across the community. People putting the welfare of their neighbors before their own. We want to tell these stories. If you know a “Hurricane Hero” drop us a note at editorpembrokepines@ourcitymedia.com. Help us tell his or her story.

Considering A Divorce?

I

f you are considering a divorce, it’s critical to understand what would happen in the event of your incapacity or death, either during the divorce or after.

Unfortunately, many divorce lawyers do not discuss incapacity or death with clients simply because they do not have training in estate planning issues and it’s not at the forefront of their minds when they are advising you through your divorce. So, that means you may need to be the one to bring it up. When you do, here are some things for you to keep in mind: Depending on the jurisdiction, as soon as you file for divorce, automated “orders” go into effect which may limit what you can do with your assets during the divorce. While you cannot entirely disinherit your spouse during a marriage in the state of Florida, you can make certain changes to your estate planning in anticipation of your divorce or while it is in process. Talking with your divorce lawyer about these issues (or meet with your Personal Family Lawyer, if he or she has created your estate plan, before you file for divorce) is a wise choice. Keep in mind that if you previously had a single Personal Family Lawyer prepare an estate plan for you and your spouse, you should seek the advice of a new attorney, as a conflict of interest will arise with the attorney that prepared the joint plan. If you have already filed for divorce, you may want to revoke any existing powers of attorney, positions as

trustee, and health care directives giving your soon to be ex-spouse control over your assets and your medical decision-making if you were to become incapacitated, as well as execute what we call a “Divorce Will”, which is a “temporary” Will that would cover the disposition of your assets in the event of your death during your divorce. Talk to your divorce lawyer about these temporary documents that can be executed while you are in the divorce process, and then ensure he or she is coordinating with us on your behalf to get these documents prepared and signed. Be sure to update your “Divorce Will” and estate planning documents once your divorce is finalized and all asset dispositions have been handled. These new documents will take your new reality as a single adult into account. As your Personal Family Lawyer, we can guide you in creating a comprehensive financial plan that protects and preserves your wealth while navigating your divorce, and enable you to meet all your financial obligations. Before we meet, we’ll send you a Family Wealth Inventory and Assessment to complete that will get you thinking about what you own, what you may owe, what matters most to you, and what you want to leave behind. You can begin by calling our office today at 954-447-2580 to schedule a Family Wealth Planning Session.

Hundreds are expected to attend the show, which is free and open to the public. “Everyone is welcome to attend the show, where they can enjoy the local handcrafts created with love by members of our community,” said Mary Stephens, member of the Pembroke Pines Chapter. “Once you come to a show, you will look forward to coming back each year.” Since 1989, artists and crafters have been invited to participate in the juried show. Approximately 60 crafters from throughout South Florida will participate in this year’s show, including Southern Handcraft Society members, as well as local artists and crafters. Exhibitors are selected on the basis of excellence, creativity, and craftsmanship. All items must be the work of the exhibitor and must be approved by a jury committee comprised of fellow crafters. All crafters are welcome. The show includes all one-of-a-kind items, such as original paintings and framed arts, as well as wooden, knitted, crocheted, embroidered, and quilted items. There will also be unique candles, table decor, door hangers, wreaths, tree decorations, and ornaments. The crafts will highlight the upcoming holidays (Halloween, Harvest, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas), as well as non-seasonal décor.

The green section will include recycled, reused, and repurposed items, such as pocketbooks from recycled VCR tapes and clocks made out of CD discs. It will also have other items made out of recycled materials, such as eating utensils, wooden spoons, typewriter keys, mahjong tiles, bingo chips, sweaters and more. In the Country Kitchen section, visitors will find unique homemade jellies, jams, breads, cookies, cakes and other delicious treats. At the jewelry counter, they can purchase new and traditional handmade jewelry, such as beaded items, earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, hair ornaments, and brooches. Since 1988, members of the Southern Handcraft Society’s Pembroke Pines chapter have been meeting to explore their love of arts and crafts. In the Pembroke Pines chapter, there are approximately 35 members that range in age from teenagers to seniors. They join to learn more about knitting, quilting, jewelry making, beading, glass etching, woodwork and other handmade items, as well as to be surrounded by others who share their passion and want to have fun doing it. The club is always looking for new members. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7pm, at the Carl Schechter SWFP Community Center The Carl Schechter SWFP Southwest Focal Point Community Center is located at 301 N.W. 103 Avenue. Play Bingo and Support the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

O

n October 26, Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines will offer a way to have fun and help the local community at the same time. It is hosting the 7th Annual fundraising Bingo Luncheon at 11:30am, at Club 19 at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club. The event helps to provide funding for all of the club’s projects, including Pack-a-Sack. In addition to five games of bingo, there will be entertainment, door prizes, a buffet lunch with wine, and a variety of vendors. Some of the prizes include baskets, a tablet computer, beauty products, gift cards and more. This year, the club has supported many local and international projects. It awarded three scholarships to graduating high school seniors; supported the Exceptional Theatre Company; provided over 3,500 new books to elementary school children to read during winter recess; supported the Boys and Girls Club; provided backpacks for needy children; and more. Internationally, Rotary supports a school in Colombia and is involved in the eradication of polio. One of the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines’ largest projects, however, is Packa-Sack. Many children in the community come from homes where putting food on the table is a challenge. When children are hungry, they often have difficulty learning and concentrating in school. Rotary members partner with New Horizon United Methodist Church, Rotary Club of Hollywood, Sawgrass Ford, Elevating

Word Church and West Pines Community Church to make sure that this does not happen by providing needy students with enough food to eat on the weekends. They provide approximately 120 children at local schools with weekly bags of food through the Pack-A-Sack Program. The kids receive free lunch and/or breakfast, but have little to eat when school is not in session. To supplement, every Friday they receive bags of food with healthy options that will serve them at least three meals a day with two snacks for two days. During holidays and on long weekends, they receive some extra protein and sides. “It is sad to see the kids come running into the cafeteria to eat,” said said Gail Quigley, who has been a member of the Rotary for 19 years. “No child should go hungry. It is critical that they get the proper nutrition to be successful.” Rotary members provide funding, help purchase the food, and deliver the bags to the schools. Volunteers from the New Horizon United Methodist Church help fill the bags. Members of Flanagan High School’s Key Club also help. Last year, they committed over 600 hours of service and helped sort over 3,500 bags. The church and other community groups also provide some funding and food. “We look for volunteers, community partners, civic groups, business partners, food donations, and those with a heart to make a difference - one child at a time,” said Reverand Peytyn Tobin, founder of Pack-a-Sack. For information, to make a donation, or to purchase tickets, call Dr. Gail Quigley at 305-528 – 6413 or Ligia Corredor at 954-5406517. The $50 price of admission for Bingo is tax deductible.

Students Will Find Ways to Give Back at the Annual Teen Volunteer Expo BY DEBBY TEICH

M

any teens are looking for volunteer opportunities to earn service hours for school or simply to give back to the community. Since 2006, the Teen Volunteer Expo has offered them an opportunity to connect with a wide variety of local organizations that need their help. The event, will be held on October 7, from 1pm-3pm, at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library, located at 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines. Over 500 students are expected to attend the Expo, which is like “speed dating” for volunteer work. On one day, in one place, students will be able to match their interests with an organization. Within two hours, students can sample between 25-40 different organizations, both large and small. They will have an opportunity to talk to the people who manage the organization’s volunteer programs, as well as other teens who have volunteered for the organization. Most of the organizations that participated last year are expected to return. They include: Museum of Discovery and Science, Broward County Teen Court, Broward County Parks, City of Pembroke Pines, Civil Air Patrol, the FRIENDS Horse Ranch, Go Green Charity Recycling, Habitat for Humanity, Heartland Hospice, Women in Distress’ Dog-Walk, International Game Fish Association, Marine Industries, South Florida Wildlife Care Center, Southwest Regional Library, Airport Ambassadors, HandsOn Broward, and more. Josh Pilner plans to attend the event. “I need to earn some service hours for school,” said Pilner, who is a high school sophomore. “I am hoping that I can find something that involves animals. I have three dogs, two cats and a bird. I just love animals!” Jessica Stern also plans to attend. “I have some extra time after school and want to use it to help others,” said Stern, who is a high school senior. “It is a great opportunity to talk to a lot of different organizations all in one place.”

vivacious group of seniors did not let their age get in the way when they auditioned for 18 spots on the Miami HEAT Golden Oldies Dance Team at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines. The Miami HEAT was looking for the hippest, coolest, young-atheart senior citizens to be a part of its 20172018 senior citizen hip-hop dance team. The contestants, age 60 or over, worked on mastering the latest dance moves with rhythm and style. Two Pembroke Pines residents - Aura and Sam – were selected to be on the team. “There was serious talent competing for a spot on the 2017-18 Golden Oldies Dance Team,” said Jay Shechter Director of Community Services and Housing for the City

of Pembroke Pines. “This group of women and men will certainly impress and invigorate the HEAT fans.” The Golden Oldies have been performing for the HEAT Nation for over 13 years. They have a devoted following and have become one of the NBA’s most popular senior citizen dance teams. Dressed in the Miami Heat team colors of red, black, and white, men and women from all over South Florida brought their “A” game to the audition. They performed their best freestyle moves for judges and learned dance routines from HEAT Golden Oldies Manager Shara Kiddy. As they worked up a sweat, they were judged on their overall presence, as well as their smile,

Pooches in Pines Reunites Dogs with Their Owners BY DEBBY TEICH

I

SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

f you have lost your dog and you live in the city of Pembroke Pines, Pooches in Pines may have found it. The 501c3 volunteer organization works with the Pembroke Pines Police Department’s Animal Assistance Program to reunite dogs with their owners and/or re-home dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected. All the dogs have been found by the Pembroke Pines Police, as a result of police calls for service in the City of Pembroke Pines. Since Pooches in Pines was formed in 2011, it has reunited or re-homed over 1,000 lost dogs, as well as various other animals. When volunteers cannot locate an owner, Pooches in Pines works with rescue groups and volunteers to achieve its secondary goal of re-homing the dogs in its care. All the dogs are seen by a veterinarian to be vaccinated, spayed, neutered, and microchipped. They also undergo any minor surgery deemed necessary. They are then placed in loving temporary foster homes until a new permanent home is found through the adoption process. Pooches in Pines is 100% operated by volunteers, who have regular full-time jobs outside of the program. Most of them are sworn and non-sworn PPPD personnel who walk, feed, bathe and play with the dogs during their

breaks or before and after work. Although kennel facilities to shelter the dogs are provided by the PPPD, all expenses necessary to care for the animals, including the cost of the veterinarian, are solely dependent on private donations. Pooches in Pines is always in need of foster homes for dogs or cats, people willing to put up signs when dogs are found and dog-related donations. In January, Pooches in Pines will hold its 2nd Annual Pooches in Pines Fur Ball Gala. It was originally scheduled for October 14, but changed due to Hurricane Irma. Hosted by City of Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, the event will be held at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, 601 City Center Way in Pembroke Pines. “The primary goal of the Fur Ball Gala is to raise funds to support the goals and compassionate humane works of Pooches in Pines, as they care for creatures who need to find their way home, or to a forever home,” said Mayor Ortis. For information on the gala, call Angela Goodwin at 954-445-2991 or Stacy Jurgens at 954-658-4084.

The Frank Art Gallery Presents Visual Therapy – The Effects of Art as Manifestation on Artist and Viewer BY DEBBY TEICH

T

he public is invited to the Frank Gallery to experience Visual Therapy – The Effects of Art as Manifestation on Artist and Viewer, which showcases the work of 14 different artists. The free multidisciplinary exhibition will be on display through December 1. As part of the exhibition, there will be a children’s art appreciation workshop, held on October 14, from noon to 2pm. Curated by Stacy Conde, gallery director of Conde Contemporary, Visual Therapy examines the psychological motivations of the artists and the response their work evokes in the viewer. Through video installations, photorealistic, academic and expressionistic portraiture, conceptual art, surrealism, photography and performance art, visitors will have a direct view into the mind of the artistic creators. “Though conventional wisdom would have us focus on art and not the artist, Visual Therapy takes a deeper dive into how it was created and what it elicits,” said Conde. “Some emotions will correlate and others will be completely opposite. What is so amazing about art is how people interpret it.” Artists featured in the exhibition include: Anthony Ardavin, Julio Figeroa Beltran, Patricio Gonzalez Bezanilla, Bill Bilowit, Andres Conde, Luis Enrique Toledo Del Rio, Agnes Grochulska, Natasha Kertes, Marylin Loddi, Reynier Llanes Marquez, Darian Rodriguez Mederos, Raiman Rodriguez Moya, Luis Rodriguez Noa and Enrique Toledo.

The free children’s workshop on October 14 is for ages 8 to 12. It will focus on child art appreciation and culminate in a hands-on activity. The workshop will be led by Yuneikys Villalinga, independent curator and art critic. Villalinga is a contributor to several art magazines including, Art Experience: NYC and OnCuba. She is also Associate Curator of the international project, Artist Pension Trust. The Frank is a two-story art gallery named after Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis for his decadeslong commitment to the cultural arts. The Frank art gallery, located in the Charles F. Dodge City Center, showcases multi-disciplinary inclusive exhibitions to foster connections, initiate cultural change and promote innovation. The gallery’s exhibition and learning space serves as a site of convergence for artists, performers, thought leaders and community members to create partnerships for social engagement, leveraging the power of the arts to create a sense of place. The Frank is located in the Charles F. Dodge City Center in Pembroke Pines at 601 City Center Way. Admission to The Frank is free. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information about The Frank, call 954-392-2129, send an email to thefrank@ppines.com or visit thefrankgallery.org. West Pembroke Pines Optimist Miracle League Kicks Off Fall Season COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

W

ho says that miracles can’t happen? The West Pembroke Pines Optimist Miracle League recently held Opening Ceremonies to kick off its 11th season, which runs through November 3. Approximately 65 children with special needs took to the field for a friendly game of baseball. The bleachers were filled parents, friends and relatives cheering throughout the game. Students from Flanagan High School’s baseball team served as the Angels in the outfield and assisted each player. Lotsie Dotsie from Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital threw out the first pitch of the season. Vice Mayor Angelo Castillo welcomed the parents, players, and volunteers. DJ Tom Caminiti provided the entertainment. A special tribute was given in memory of Dallas Perez and Zachary Finch. Collaborative efforts by surrounding Memorial Hospitals and Teresa Garcia made for a great menu. “This program affords our special kids the opportunity to participate in America’s past time and build lifelong friends and relationships” said Frank

Marquez, Regional Sales Manager for BSN Sports, who co-founded the league. “It is truly remarkable what this program has evolved to. This year we have elected Alexandra Bello as our President and she is eager to take the program to the next level. Alex has been volunteering in our program since its inception.” The Miracle League provides opportunities for children, ages 5 to 21, with special needs to play the game of baseball. The West Pembroke Pines Optimist Club runs the program with assistance from the City. It is sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and BSN Sports, which provides players with a full uniform, team pictures, trophies and more. There is no cost to participate. The League is held at Rose G. Price Park, which has a field with a special rubberized surface that makes it accessible for individuals with wheelchairs or other assistive walking devices. Games are held on Friday nights at 7pm. Everyone plays two innings; there are no outs; and the only rule is to have fun.

“Parents get to sit back and enjoy watching their kids play the game of baseball,” said Mario Salceda, Administrator for Memorial Healthcare System, who co-founded the league. “It is such a great feeling when you see the smile on their faces.” Deborah MacLean’s 18-year-old son, Shawn, has been part of the West Pembroke Pines Miracle League since the inaugural year. “Every year they get better and better and bigger and bigger,” said MacLean. “They have become family. This team has been sponsored by the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood. My son has also been a patient there all of his life. This organization has gone above and beyond to do everything they can for all of its members to have an all-around fun time. They are the absolute best. We love them all.” Rose G. Price Park is located at 901 NW 208th Avenue. For information, visit www.wppomiracleleague.com or find it on Facebook and Twitter.

Community Helps Residents of Century Village After Hurricane Irma COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

H

urricane Irma brought out the best in many. When much of Century Village was still without power after the storm, members of the community volunteered to help the elderly residents of the large retirement community in Pembroke Pines. Police officers, C.E.R.T. (Civilian Emergency

Response Team), Police Explorers, Code Enforcement officers, the National Guard and many concerned citizens distributed water, ice and meals. Some even went door to door to check on the residents. Harriett Weinstein was vising a friend at Century

Village, when the hurricane struck and she was unable to get home. “We had just run out of water when the crew showed up,” said Weinstein. “We were so grateful for the food and drink. It was heartwarming that so many people showed up to help the residents.”

City of Pembroke Pines Hires New Chief Curator SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

T

he City of Pembroke Pines recently hired a new chief curator for The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery & Exhibit Hall. Joshua Carden started his new job on September 5, just a few days before Hurricane Irma hit. His primary responsibility is to engage the Pembroke Pines community through the arts. This includes overseeing marketing initiatives, presenting workshops and lectures, and collaborating with other departments, such as education and development. “Joshua Carden is a great addition to our Cultural Division,” said Holly Bonkowski, Division Director of Cultural Arts for the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. “He has an extensive art background encompassing curatorial work and gallery administration. He is deeply passionate about the arts and loves sharing his enthusiasm with others.” Carden has curated numerous exhibitions over the last eight years and worked closely with several arts organizations to plan, curate, and execute large events and exhibitions. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Florida with a B.A. in Art History, while serving as the curator at The Lost Art Gallery. He received his Master of Arts in Arts Administration from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a focus in contemporary art and gallery administration. While attending SCAD, he was tasked with overseeing the curation and marketing development of a start-up art advisory site, Art Kollecto Inc., where he became the Senior Art Advisor.

“I was attracted to this opportunity, because of the city’s commitment to the cultural arts,” said Carden. “I hope to engage, educate, and inspire the public by creating an exciting and innovating exhibition program,” said Carden. “I still have a lot of planning to do for future shows, but The Frank is already slated for some very exciting exhibits, including Visual Therapy, which is curated by Stacy Conde.” Carden says he is very excited to showcase the contemporary art of South Florida, while engaging with the community. “I love to speak to people, young and old, about art in general,” said Carden. “I can’t wait to hear what the Pembroke Pines community is interested in seeing in their new gallery. I am looking forward to the chance to transform a brand, new gallery space into a permanent fixture of the South Florida art scene.” The Frank is located at 601 City Center Way in Pembroke Pines. Stay connected and follow The Frank on Facebook and Instagram at The Frank Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-392-2129 or send an email to thefrank@ppines.com.

Increased Risk of Heart Disease Following Breast Cancer Diagnosis Other commonly used drugs for treating breast cancer, like trastuzumab (Herceptin), can also contribute to cardiovascular problems down the road, so patients need to be aware of the risks.” In addition, radiation therapy to the chest area can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease because the treatment is administered in close proximity to the heart.

Thomas Samuel, MD Diego Sadler, MD Breast Oncologist

Cardio-Oncologist

Breast cancer survival has improved over the years due to new, innovative therapies. However, some treatments may cause cardiotoxicity, or damage to your heart. This is especially true if you are at risk for heart disease. According to Thomas Samuel, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast oncologist, “A significant issue for women with breast cancer is the ‘survivorship’ period, which refers to what happens after they survive the cancer. It’s particularly important to be aware of the risk of heart disease.” Many of the therapies used, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy, can impact a patient’s longterm cardiac risk. Dr. Samuel adds, “For example, some of the agents we use in chemotherapy increase future risk of heart failure. Certain chemotherapy regimens that include medications called anthracyclines can cause weakness of the heart muscle and congestive heart failure.

“Thankfully, today radiation therapy techniques are very safe and localized, and are designed to spare the heart from any significant damage,” said Dr. Samuel. Cardiotoxicity can occur in various forms, including damage to the heart muscle itself, arteries, or the heart valves. Although cardiotoxicity can be life-threatening, it can often be managed effectively with medication and minimally invasive treatments. Diego Sadler, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida cardio-oncologist said, “Fortunately, the percentage of patients affected by these treatments is relatively small and there are now sophisticated imaging modalities that allow early detection and treatment of heart disease resulting from cancer treatment for breast cancer.” Breast cancer patients who have undergone these types of treatments, but who are also at high risk for heart disease due to other conditions, are at an increased risk for cardiotoxicity. “Pre-existing factors such as hypertension, diabetes or genetic conditions affect breast cancer survivors similar to how

they affect the general population; however, having undergone certain cancer therapies may put them at an even higher risk for heart disease,” said Dr. Sadler. It is also important to know that some therapies used in the treatment of breast cancer have the potential to cause cardiac disease many years, even decades after treatment. For this reason, surveillance to allow for early detection and treatment can offer improved cardio-vascular outcomes. The relatively new specialty, cardio-oncology, focuses on the effect cancer treatments have on the heart. Cleveland Clinic Florida is one of South Florida’s leading healthcare providers for both cancer and cardio-oncology care. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s multidisciplinary cardio-oncology team of oncologists, cardiologists, radiologists and cancer support specialists customize unique treatment plans for each patient. They are dedicated to caring for patients in every stage of cancer treatment who are at risk for, or have developed cardiovascular disease. This allows for the safe completion of potentially life-saving cancer treatments with minimal effects to their cardiovascular health – ultimately giving patients the best opportunity for long-term survivorship. t Panther Run Elementary, students are learning the importance of giving back at an early age. They have been collecting items for their sister school, West Hollywood Elementary. It is a clear example of kids helping kids. “My students, staff and community learn and believe that helping others makes a difference,” said Saef. “You never know how your actions can change the world! We teach the students that helping others helps all of us, and that everyone is not as fortunate to have the same things others have. That is my culture - PIF–WIAMAD (Pay It Forward & Who I AM Makes A Difference).” West Hollywood Elementary is a Title I school, located only 13 miles from Panther Run Elementary. It has over 620 students and 95% of its families are on free or reduced lunch, which means that affording the basic school needs is a challenge. For the past seven years, Panther Run has been helping its sister school during the holidays by providing clothing and books for the holidays. Last year, they collected enough to give every child something. West Hollywood’s principal recently lost her battle to cancer. This year, Panther Run added a clothing, school supply and food drive at the start of the school year to “pay it forward” in her honor. “We recognize that the loss of anyone is devas-

tating,” said Saef. “Amiee Zekofsky was an amazing, caring, giving leader. She did everything she could to help her students. I believe in the same things, so we are dedicating this drive in her name and honor.” Some of the most needed items on the list included school supplies (pencils, paper, scissors, composition books, erasers, backpacks), gently used books, clothing (socks, underwear, school shorts, gently used sweaters/jackets) and food (Vienna sausages, granola bars/snacks, pasta, rice). “The students helped with the delivery, so they learned a lesson of caring, giving and paying it forward,” said Saef. “It has been very moving for all of us - both the givers and receivers.” Saef reinforces the PIF–WIAMAD culture throughout the year. Over the past 10 years, students have raised approximately $20,000 for Autism, MDA, and Down Syndrome. They have brought in gently used and new shoes for Kicks for Kids and were the number one school in Broward County with the most shoes; participated in Paw It Forward for the Humane Society; donated towels, blankets, sheets, pet toys & food & treats to the Humane Society of Broward; and more. After her students met a fundraising goal for the American Heart Association last year, she added being duct taped to a wall to the list. “A small act of kindness can mean a huge thing to someone else,” said Saef. “We bring kindness to the world to make it better.”

Winning Posters on Display at City Hall During Fire Prevention Week

n a fire, seconds can mean the difference between escaping safely or having a life end in tragedy. To help reinforce this message, Pembroke Pines students in grades k-5th recently competed in the Pembroke Pines Fire Department’s 21st Annual Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest, which promoted Fire Prevention Week’s theme “ Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” It was an opportunity for children to showcase their creative talents and get them thinking about fire safety at the same time. The winning posters will be displayed at Pembroke Pines City Hall during Fire Prevention Week, from October 9 to 12. “For several decades, the City of Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue has been working to promote and educate our children about fire safety in coordination with NFPA, the official sponsor of the Fire Prevention Week,” said Fire Marshal Sandra Lluis.

“This year’s campaign works hand-in-hand with what we’ve learned about smoke alarms over the past years. In a fire situation, smoke and fire spreads quickly! Within seconds it can impair visibility and create confusion. Under these circumstances, not knowing what to do could jeopardize you and your family. Developing and practicing a Home Escape Plan could make the difference between life and death. In the event of a fire, there is no time for guess work. Have a plan, practice your plan and know two ways out of every room.” According to the rules, each child had to make their own poster, which was judged on originality and had to contain the Fire Prevention Week theme. Trophies were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each grade. During the seven-day campaign in October, the Fire Department will offer a variety of programs aimed at educating the public on fire safety. In addition to the poster contest, there will be fire safety presentations and fire station tours. The Fire Department will also give away thousands of brochures, firefighter helmets, coloring books, and stickers. Some campaign tips include: ▸▸ Draw a map of your home. Include all doors and windows. ▸▸ Find two ways out of every room. ▸▸ Make sure doors and windows are not blocked. ▸▸ Choose an outside meeting place in front of your home. ▸▸ Push the test button to sound the smoke alarm. ▸▸ Practice your drill with everyone in the home. ▸▸ Get outside to your meeting place. For information on the Fire Prevention Week poster contest in Pembroke Pines, call the Fire Marshal at 954-499-9560. HEALTH CARE

T

he issue of driving is one many seniors and their families will face. It is one that is often inevitable when there is a diagnosis of dementia. It is important to know that a person with dementia usually does not self-limit his/her own driving. And in almost every state, physicians are not mandated to report someone they feel is unsafe to drive. For those reasons, the burden often falls onto a family member to make the decision. When trying to decide if the person should continue to drive, there are many factors to consider other than memory. Families tend to focus on if the person remembers where they are going and are they at risk of getting lost. The solution is to allow driving to continue, but only to familiar locations. However, people with dementia experience deficits in several other areas that are key to driving. For example, it is common for a person to have problems with depth perception. This makes it difficult for the driver to determine how close other cars and objects are. Determining if there is time to pull out into traffic or turn before an approaching car reaches them are some of the issues faced when there is impaired depth perception. Decision making and the ability to anticipate events also becomes more problematic. A driver may see a ball roll into the road, but be unable to anticipate that a child could be running for it. Or he/she may be taxed with deciding quickly what to do when an unanticipated event does occur. Divided attention also can become challenging for a person with dementia. The ability to look at the speedometer and then back at the road can be difficult. The driver may find it challenging to continue to focus on driving, while giving attention to a bicyclist or pedestrian on the side of the road. In addition to problems due to dementia, there are normal changes that occur with aging that bring their own challenges. A decline in vision and hearing, decreased flexibility, and a slower reaction time are common changes that happen as a person ages. All key factors to a person being able to drive successfully. Regular inspections of your loved one’s car for dings, dents, or scratches may help to determine if there are issues, especially with depth perception. Talk to your loved one’s neighbors to determine if they have noticed any problems. And go for a drive with your loved one to observe any possible difficulties. Watch to see if they are signaling properly. Do they check thoroughly before changing lanes? Are they able to properly maintain their speed and the distance between cars? It is important to know that if a senior is involved in a car accident, he/she is more likely to suffer serious injuries than a younger driver. And statistics show that a senior citizen is at a higher risk of death when involved in a car crash, even one that appears minor. If you are concerned about your loved ones driving, please discuss this with his/her physician. Although a doctor is not mandated to report, many are more willing when they know the family is on board. In addition, explore the use of a driving assessment program and tools available which can help in determining abilities and limitations.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Yours, Mine and Ours BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

A

sad fact is that the average marriage lasts only seven years, with one out of two marriages ending in divorce. As over seventyfive percent of divorced individuals eventually choose to remarry, blended families now outnumber traditional nuclear families. And while this family dynamic has become the new normal, it’s a far cry from what was portrayed on the classic television series, “The Brady Bunch.” If you are part of a blended family, you face some unique estate planning challenges. These include providing for your current spouse if he or she survives you, and making sure that when your spouse dies your children will be taken care of. Family relationships may change dramatically after the first spouse dies and what the surviving spouse does with his or her assets can often be unpredictable. Let’s review just a few possible estate planning options.

Your spouse

A simple, albeit not wise, approach would be to leave everything to your spouse. As your spouse adores your children, you have no doubt that he/ she will always take care of your children, right? Realistically, this approach might end up totally disinheriting your own children! Consider this. If your spouse becomes incapacitated it is very likely that your spouse’s children will take over the financial affairs of the family. You don’t need a vivid imagination to see how that might turn into a disaster. What happens when your spouse dies? Or remarries? Your assets may ultimately be inherited by your stepchildren, or even by the person who marries your spouse. Proper legal planning can avoid these pitfalls.

Your children

Another solution is to leave assets to your children. Of course, this guarantees that your children will not be disinherited, but this path may also lead to unintended consequences. Leaving assets outright to your children opens up a wide range of concerns, including the possibility that they may squander their inheritance by spending or investing unwisely, or lose most or all in a nasty divorce, an untimely lawsuit, or through bankruptcy. Even if your children are adults, shouldn’t you still consider protecting them from future creditors and predators?

Your ex-spouse

You probably don’t consider your ex, but your former spouse does play a role in your estate planning. Think about it. If you leave money to your minor children, it is likely that your ex-spouse will be appointed by the probate court to manage your children’s property. What happens if a child dies while single and childless? Who would inherit their assets? As the next-of-kin of your children, that individual can be your ex-wife or ex-husband! Planning effectively for a blended family requires creativity and experience. Consult with an estate planning professional to formulate a plan that is right for you and your family. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

EDUCATION CONNECTION

Giving Your Child Every Advantage BY CELINA CHOCRON

W

ith the beginning of a new school year now behind us, it is time to reflect on what our expectations are for our children, and how we can ensure a continuation of a successful, pleasant and smooth school year. Let’s use a car trip as an analogy. While on a cross-country road trip, you would stop periodically to fill up the tank and make sure everything in the car is running smoothly. When school started in August, your child embarked on a ten-month journey. Before you get too far, stop and analyze how your child is doing at school and make a plan. For a road trip, the first step is to check the status of your car and make sure everything is working properly. For your child’s journey, the first step is to check “his status”. What are his strengths? What are his challenges? Beware of the following signs: ▸▸ short attention for their age and grade ▸▸ trouble organizing assignments or activities ▸▸ difficulty initiating a task, unable to finish homework in an assigned time ▸▸ impulsivity If your child presents these signs, he might need support with his executive functioning skills. It is not about just telling him to pay attention and focus; it is understanding that his brain is wired differently and that he needs to acquire those skills by implementing specific strategies. Executive functions consist of several mental skills that help the brain organize and act on information. These skills enable people to plan, organize, remember things, prioritize, pay attention and get started on tasks. If there is a deficit, all activities that involve those skills might be negatively impacted. The second step, after reviewing and analyzing the status of your car, is to fix all the defects to continue the trip. In your child’s case, if you suspect a certain type of challenge, it is imperative that you look for professional help, learn your rights, and acknowledge the options. You have the right to request a free psychological evaluation and your child has the right to receive “free and appropriate education”. Moreover, you have the right to appeal any decision made by the school district related to eligibility or services. It is important to point out that if your child is eligible for special education, he could still be served in a regular classroom. Also, your child has the right to receive related services at school, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. The last step is to make sure that all the parts in your car are working effectively. This holds true for your child as well. Once the Individual Educational Plan is created, make sure that every little detail (goals, strategies, services, accommodations) is perfectly designed and gives your child every advantage for a successful school year. ASK THE EXPERT

BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

A

ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. They are: Periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T”, or anchor incision (same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold). All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Reality of Equal Time Sharing BY EVAN BARON

A

s the law stands today, equal time sharing is not presumed to be in the best interest of the children in all situations. I will, however, state that it is becoming the norm rather than the exception. It is believed that frequent contact with both parents will result in better adjusted child. Of course, every case is different and as such, it is difficult to have a set rule for all cases. Parent’s work schedules, travel schedules and locations should be considered. A parent who must leave for work prior to a minor child having to wake up for school could present a problem. A parent who does not have a set schedule, such as pilots or firefighters, also require some planning. Parents who choose to live a distance apart can also complicate the situation. Of course, the other factor which is always considered is child support and how equal time sharing affects the monthly amount to be paid. Child Support in Florida is based upon several factors, one of which is the number of overnights a minor child spends with each parent. An equal time-sharing schedule will result in a reduced amount of support, since it is presumed that each parent will have significant “out of pocket” expenses if each has an equal amount of time with the child.

OCTOBER 2017 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES

This concept of equal time sharing has existed for several years now. I have recently met with prospective clients who seem to share the same issue. A parent has equal time sharing pursuant to their Parenting Plan, but in reality, the parent is not actually exercising his/her 50%. The result is that the parent who is not following the schedule is receiving a financial benefit by a reduced child support payment, but is not sharing in the responsibility of caring for the child. Is there a way to correct this situation, even though the parties had previously reached an Agreement? The answer is “yes” and a correction to this situation can be accomplished by a Petition for Modification. The moving party (the parent who is in fact receiving less support than he/she should) must allege that since the parties entered into their Parenting Plan there has been a substantial change of circumstance that was not anticipated at the time the Parenting Plan was agreed to. To be successful, it is essential that a calendar be kept, listing the actual overnights being exercised by each parent. Just alleging that mom or dad doesn’t have the children 50% of the time without some additional proof will probably not be a strong or successful argument if it were to go before a judge. If the Petition is successful, a new time-sharing schedule would be determined and child support would be recalculated based upon the actual number of overnights each party is exercising. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. P

lantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and supports the foot. Its causes can include excessive activity over a short period of time. This condition can occur in flat or high arched feet. Tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, cause increased tension in the fascia. Poor shoe gear as well as walking barefoot on hard floors for prolonged periods of time is often a contributing factor. Symptoms include pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground. With walking, the pain usually diminishes. Pain can also occur after sitting for a prolonged period of time or when getting out of a car and starting to walk. Occasionally, burning, numbness, shooting or tingling into the heel happens with or without weightbearing. Extreme tenderness to touch in the heel or arch region occurs, especially during or after activity. It is commonly associated with lower back pain, due to compensation and abnormal gait. Rarely swelling or discoloration to the heel occurs. Treatment starts with avoiding going barefooted as well as proper shoe gear to support the arch and heel. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation, both orally and Ultrasound-guided may be prescribed. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief. Custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to permanently support the foot and prevent reinjury may also be recommended. Frequent stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is necessary. Night splints are utilized to splint the foot at night to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally, immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot depending on level of pain and discomfort may be required. Physical therapy can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. If conservative measures fail, shockwave therapy or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used. Surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the ligament from the heel. Prognosis is excellent in over 99% of the cases if early and aggressive treatment is performed. No long-term problems are expected and surgery is rarely necessary for this condition. Nathan D. Vela, DPM, MPH, is Board Certified in Foot Surgery and Reconstructive Rearfoot & Ankle Surgery, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a foot and ankle surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults.
