Happy Holidays

T

he holiday season is upon us, and while the holidays may have different meanings for many of our readers due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, the one thing we all share is the spirit of community. It was just a few months ago that we witnessed neighbors helping neighbors as we banded together to prepare for Hurricane Irma. And in the aftermath of that storm, strangers became friends and a renewed sense of community was born. In the spirit of the holiday season, let’s rekindle those bonds as we open our homes and hearts. Share your holiday traditions with a family of another faith. Teach your children the true meaning of giving, by donating to a worthy charity or volunteering at a community food bank. And as the new year approaches, take a moment to count your blessings and resolve to become a more active member of your community. The perfect place to start is right here in the pages of this Our City magazine. Each and every issue is packed with stories on all the wonderful activities and programs taking place in your community, along with articles on the amazing accomplishments of your neighbors, young and old. Wishing you and yours a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year!

onstructing a model railroad layout involves sculpting, building, painting, laying track and even some electronic engineering. Through January 3, area residents can see a variety of model trains at the Southwest Regional Library during an exhibition hosted by the Florida Citrus Model Train Society. The event is free and open to the public. On December 13, from 6pm to 7:30pm, families are invited to wear their pajamas for a special Polar Express Night, where they can experience the train exhibit during the special one-night reception. Over 550 people are expected to attend the 3rd Annual Polar Express. Families will enjoy a retelling of the classic favorite “Polar Express” storybook, and have a special photo session at the North Pole with Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will present a special gift to each child. After sipping some hot chocolate, they can pick up some of their favorite holiday stories and movies to take home. Pre-registration is requested. “This is an opportunity to enjoy a warm, holiday event for all ages, which brings the whole community together,” said Lynn Morrison, Youth Services Librarian Supervisor. “There is no cost to families, as the Friends of Southwest Regional Library sponsor this program.” The model train exhibit is a great way for people who are interested in the hobby to find out more about it. They can also learn about train safety and much more. It features multiple layouts, including “HO”, “O”, “N”, and “G” scales. There

will be trains and scenes from the early 1900’s to modern times. Many of the exhibits will be decorated for the fall and Christmas holiday seasons. Several members of the Florida Citrus Model Train Society will be dressed in costumes that fit within the “G” Scale exhibit, such as a locomotive engineer, conductor, postmaster, telegraph operator, fisherman, sheriff, psychologist, and more. Each vignette has its own story. Children are invited to participate in a scavenger hunt, as they search for things within the two-level “G” scale layout, which is 26ft. X 12ft. For example, they might be looking for a goat eating hay, a cat licking milk, a band playing on the front porch of the “Whistle Stop Diner” or the black cat on the stairs of the “Bates Hotel.” There is also a large “HO” scale model train display on the stage that guests can operate with the supervision of a FCMTS member. Pre-registration for Polar Express is requested by calling 954357-6733. The model train exhibit is free and open to the public on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday, from 12noon to 4pm. It is closed on Fridays & Sundays. Southwest Regional Library is located at 16835 Sheridan Street. For more information about the Florida Citrus Model Train Society, visit www.fcmts.org.

Pembroke Pines Residents Enjoy Coffee with the Mayor SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

C

offee with the Mayor was one one of the many events held during Florida City Government Week. Residents and busi-

ness owners had an opportunity to meet Mayor Frank C. Ortis in an informal setting in the lobby of the City of Pembroke Pines Charles F. Dodge City Center to find out what is happening in their hometown. “Today we stand in the lobby of our beautiful new City Center,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, “We are all proud of the increased services and significant amenities our residents now enjoy. This building and the adjacent Commission Chambers and FRANK Art Gallery are excellent examples of government in action to benefit residents and the business community.” In addition to enjoying coffee, muffins and

Danish with the Mayor, participants had an opportunity to also meet with Vice Mayor Angelo Castillo, Commissioners Jay Schwartz and Ishmael Monroig, as well as Pembroke Pines staff. Some wanted to find out how to get more involved in their city, while others wanted information on native plantings in the city wetland areas and other topics. Sponsored by the Florida League of Cities, Florida City Government Week is a time to showcase cities and recognize the significant role played by city government in the lives of its citizens. The League is the official organization of the municipal governments in Florida, designed and established to meet and serve the needs of Florida’s cities and their citizens. Although Florida City Government Week is officially only one week long, Pembroke Pines government officials and residents actually celebrate the government all year long with events like Pines Night Out, Baking Challenges, Antique Shows, Egg Hunts and more. Pembroke Pines Raises Money for Puerto Rico BY DEBBY TEICH

A

pproximately six weeks after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, many residents were still without power, food, medicine and other necessities. A group of musicians performed in Pembroke Pines in an effort to help raise money for the relief effort. The Viernes Social in Pembroke Pines – Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Concert was held at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, which seats approximately 2,600 people. All proceeds from the event benefited the AARP Foundation Hurricane Relief Fund to help the people on the island of Puerto Rico. “It was a night to remember,” said Sylvia Rodriguez, who has many family members in Puerto Rico. “The music was incredible. There was so much energy in the room. We raised a lot of money. I feel blessed that I was a part of it.” The evening started with a pre-event on the plaza, which included music. Guests brought goods to donate to the residents of Puerto Rico. Once inside, the featured musicians took the stage. They included Michael Stuart, Tito Puente, Jr., Nestor Torres, Carlos Oliva, the Bobby Rodriguez Band and many others. “The people on the island have suffered so much,” said Julio Gonzalez, who has many family members in Puerto Rico. “We must do whatever we can to raise money to help them recover. I am grateful to the musicians for bringing us together to help raise funds.”

Enter the Master Chef “Gingerbread” Holiday Baking Challenge COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

W

hen it’s cold outside, baking is a great way to warm up the kitchen and spread some holiday cheer. No confection symbolizes the holidays quite like gingerbread in its many forms, from edible houses to candy-studded gingerbread men to spiced loaves of cakelike bread. If you have a gingerbread recipe that gets rave reviews from family and friends, it may be worth some money. The Master Chef Holiday Baking Challenge will be held on December 7, from 10am-11:30am, at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. There is no cost to enter, but all participants must be a member of the SWFP Community Center. The deadline to submit an application is December 5. “Holiday baking has a way of evoking all the little holiday memories from our childhood that will last a lifetime,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor. “The sweet magic of the holiday season never ends. Its greatest gifts are family and friends.” The Master Chef Baking Challenge got its start in 2005, when Daniels created the Chocolate Challenge as one of the evening activities at the Valentine’s Dance. In 2012, the Chocolate Challenge was moved to the daytime, so that more members could participate. Three years ago, the event was expanded it into a Master Chef Baking Challenge, requiring other key ingredients, such as berries, pineapple and chocolate. The rules for the upcoming baking challenge include:

▸▸ Any type of dessert that includes gingerbread (any type of sweet treat that combines ginger and other spices with honey or molasses), such as gingerbread cookies, gingerbread houses, gingerbread donuts, gingerbread brownies, gingerbread cheesecake or more ▸▸ Entries must be homemade. ▸▸ A list of all ingredients must accompany each entry. ▸▸ Up to two entries per person allowed. ▸▸ Participants must be present to win. The celebrity judges for the Holiday Baking Challenge are from Vicky Bakery. They will rate the entrees on taste and appearance. Cash prizes include 1st ($50), 2nd ($30), and 3rd ($20). Winners will also receive bragging rights as “Master Chef.” Once the judges have tried all of the entries, audience members will have an opportunity to sample them. “Remember to be creative,” said Daniels. “Judges are not only looking for the best tasting dessert, they are also looking for the dessert that is beautiful to look at!” Participants must be a member of the SW Focal Point Community Center, which is located at 301 NW 103rd Ave, in Pembroke Pines. Membership is free for people 18 years and older. For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www.ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services.

Seniors Test Their Spanish Spelling Abilities BY DEBBY TEICH

(l to r): 1st place wiiner Mariam Martinez, 2nd place winner Emilia Goenaga, 3rd place winner Julio Garzon.

I

n recognition of National Hispanic Heritage month, seniors once again competed for the title of “Spelling Bee Champion.” The 6th Annual Senior Spanish Spelling Bee was held at the City of Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. “Our members look forward to the Spanish Spelling Bee, so they can stimulate their minds,” said Suzy Felix, Activities Coordinator. “They always enjoy the excitement that the competition brings when competing with their friends.” Pembroke Pines Director of Community Services and Housing Jay Shechter, who loves to play Scrabble, came up with the idea for a Spelling Bee. After holding the first two in English, the Spanish-speaking seniors wanted a turn. Schecter agreed to hold the next contest in Spanish. The Center now offers two

28

Spelling Bees each year – one in English and one in Spanish. “Every year we see an increase in participants,” said Silvia A. Aguilar, SWFP Community Services Administrator. “It takes a lot of courage to get on stage and participate under pressure with so many people watching.” The contest was open to those 50 and older. This year, there was a special guest. One-year-old Ezra Wolfson wore a Bumble Bee costume to the contest and was crowned Spelling Bee Mascot. Spelling Bee Moderator was Martha Castilleja (Ezra’s grandmother) and she was assisted by Fernanda Wolfson (Ezra’s mother). The tension was high, as contestants spelled a wide range of words using the pronunciation from the Spanish alphabet, including any special punctuation. The contest started with easy words, such as “blusa” and “hablar” and progressed with more difficult ones. Once contestants misspelled a word, they were eliminated. Mariam Martinez was declared the winner after she correctly spelled “barbitúrico,”

which means barbiturate in English. She received $50. Emilia Goenaga was the second place winner ($30) and Julio Garzon won third place ($20). All three also received a Certificate of Recognition and earned bragging rights for the year. The Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue in Pembroke Pines. During the weekday and evening The Center holds classes, workshops, activities, and special events for members 18 years and older, and membership is free. For information, call 954-450-6888 and ask for the activities desk or visit www.ppines. com, click on Departments and select Community Services.

Residents Learn Crime Prevention Safety Tips at Pines Night Out COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

A

t Pines Night Out, the public had an opportunity to meet crime prevention and specialized units, receive safety tips, and enjoy free entertainment and refreshments. Hosted by the Pembroke Pines Police Department and Neighborhood Watch, the free evening of activities motivates communities to get involved; to help keep their neighborhoods safe and free from crime; and to serve as extra eyes and ears for the police department. “We want our residents to know their local police department is out there protecting them and their families every day,” said PSA Cheryl Watters, Community Affairs Unit. “We want the community to know they can come to us for assistance anytime and

to show them all the wonderful programs the police department can offer them.” The Police and Fire Department provided safety information. Children visited with “Officer McGruff” (the number one crime fighting dog) and “Sparky the Firefighter.” Many of the police department specialized units were on display and available to speak with kids and parents, including Police Dive and Rescue Team, Motorcycle/Traffic Division, Victims Advocate, Police Explorers, Community Affairs Unit, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members, Community on Patrol, SWAT, Police K-9 unit, Field Force, and Economic Crimes representatives. The Pembroke Pines Police & Fire Departments

had fire and rescue trucks on display, as well as dive boats, armored SWAT vehicles, and police gear to try on. Several other agencies were also at the event, including Child ID’s, and Poison Prevention. There were also specialized Law Enforcement agencies available, such as US Coast Guard, US Customs and Border Protection, US Postal Inspector, AB &T (Alcohol, Beverage & Tobacco) and the Division of Insurance Fraud. Children also enjoyed face painting, pony rides and bounce houses. There was stage entertainment, a DJ playing dance music, photo booth, a costume contest for ages 4 to 15, a police motorcycle for picture taking, and more.

PPCHS National English Honor Society Promotes Literacy and Literature

SCHOOL NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

T

hroughout the school year, members of the City of Pembroke Pines Charter High School’s National English Honor Society promote and celebrate literacy, as well as the literary arts in the school and community. They accomplish this through contests, mentoring, book exchanges, Poetry Slams and more. “Students need to know how to read, communicate, and think critically to succeed in life,” said Sarah Phelps, club advisor, who has been teaching English at PPCHS for 18 years. “Literacy empowers students, not only academically in preparing them for success in school and the workforce, but also socially and emotionally by teaching them how to understand and empathize with others and giving them opportunities to express, explore, and validate their own thoughts and feelings.” The club currently has 108 members, from 10th -12th grade, that meet monthly. Members must complete two semesters of high school English, maintain at least a 3.0 average in English, and have an overall GPA of at least3.0. Some of the club’s events/activities include: ▸▸ Writing Contests– The club hosts monthly, schoolwide writing contests to encourage student writing and honor student talent. ▸▸ ReadingMentorship Program– Each week, club members work on reading skills with kindergarten students from P PCES- FSU campus. ▸▸ Children’s HarborDonations – Club members collectschool supplies and deliver them to Children’s Harbor. ▸▸ Banned Books Week – In September, the club participated in the national Banned Books Week initiative, which aims to increase awareness of the freedom to read. Members s ubmitted fl yersthat listed their favorite banned books along with explanations of why the books are important.

▸▸ Recite Night – On December 1, during the 2nd annual Recite Night, students will recite famous poetry by memory. ▸▸ Elephant Book Exchange –PPCHS students, both inside and outside the club, will s hare their favorite books with other students during theholidays. They will donate a new wrapped book and exchange it for another one, without knowing the title. ▸▸ Poetry Slam – During the annual coffeehouse-style Poetry Slam, held on February 7 at Southwest Regional Library, students will honor the art of poetry andthe school’s talented writers, poets, speakers, and performers. Students can w atch, share their own original poems or recite famous published poems as part of the Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest. ▸▸ Poem in your Pocket Day - Poem in your Pocket Day is a nationally recognized day in April that advocates for the appreciation and distribution of poetry. Club members will print out selected poems and roll them into tied scrolls to distribute to teachers and students across campus.

Elementary Students Learn the Importance of Planning Two Ways Out

SCHOOL NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

O

ver 750 Pembroke Pines elementary school students recently competed in the Pembroke Pines Fire Department’s 21st Annual Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest, which promoted Fire Prevention Week’s theme “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” “In a fire situation, smoke and fire spreads quickly,” said Fire Marshal Sandra Lluis. “Within seconds it can impair visibility and create confusion. Under these circumstances, not knowing what to do could jeopardize you and your family. Developing and practicing a Home Escape Plan could make the difference between life and death. In the event of a fire, there is no time for guess work. Have a plan, practice your plan and know two ways out of every room.” According to the rules, each child had to make their own poster, which was judged on originality and had to contain the Fire Prevention Week theme. Students placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd place attended a Pembroke Pines City Commission meeting, where Fire Chief John Picarello and Fire Marshal Sandra Lluis presented them with a Fire Fighter bobble head trophy. The following were the winners: ▸▸ Kindergarten - 1st place: Mila Zapata, Somerset Academy; 2nd place: Morgan Powell, Somerset Academy; 3rd place: Gabriella Rivero, Somerset Academy ▸▸ 1st Grade - 1st place: PPCS East Campus (name withheld); 2nd place: Simran Chhabra, PPCS West

PPCS Students Bag the Trash During a Coastal Clean Up

ollywood Beach North Park is now a little cleaner thanks to the efforts of students from the Beach Patrol Club at Pembroke Pines Charter East Elementary and the Builders Club at Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School Central Campuses. For the 15th consecutive year, the school’s Beach Patrol volunteered in the International Coastal Cleanup. “A firsthand experience typically makes a significant impact on people regardless of age,” said Piper Spencer, Central Campus Builders Club Adviser and seven-year veteran of the Beach Cleanup. “Our students were shocked and saddened to see not only the trash on the shore, but the effects the waves had on this beautiful beach. Experiences like this empower our students to remind people to use garbage cans and not leave trash behind.” After applying sun screen and putting on hats and gloves, the crew hit the sand. Hoping that people have become more respectful to nature, they were expecting to find less trash than last year. Unfortunately, that was not the case. They col-

lected the usual cigarette butts, plastic beverage bottles and caps, grocery bags, Styrofoam cups, food wrappers plastic lids, straws, and glass bottles. They also found that Hurricane Irma had caused beach erosion and washed up additional trash, such as clothing, tents, chairs, wood planks, fishing lines and more. The students collected an estimated 200 pounds more trash than in the 2016 cleanup. “Each year our students clean up the same section of beach,” said East Campus Science Chair Lisa Dizengoff, who has led students on the beach cleanup for the past 12 years. “Upon arriving at the beach this year, our students noticed a considerable difference in the shoreline. Not only had Irma washed away sand, she washed ashore all sorts of debris we had not seen in past cleanups. This year they left very concerned for the sea turtles, birds, fish and other creatures who will die because they ingest trash left behind by people” For information, visit www.pinescharter.net.

Franklin Academy’s Journalism Students Win Awards at FSPA BY DEBBY TEICH

ore than 500 middle and high school students recently attended the Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA) District 7 Convention held at Nova Southeastern University, including five from Franklin Academy. Two of the school’s middle year students – Lyhannah Oreo and Judith Natino – won awards. The FSPA is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1946. It is the scholastic press association for the state of Florida and its members consist of more than 300 student publications, online media teams and broadcast programs from the state. The main mission of the organization is to educate, train and support scholastic journalists and their advisers. During the competition, students had an opportunity to participate in 24 workshop sessions in different areas of journalism and also compete on the spot in different contests. After receiving a prompt, students had an hour and a half to create and submit their final product. “The competition gives the journalism students a real sense of deadlines and assignments,” said Patricia Cantore, Franklin Academy student advisor who attended the event. “They also have opportunities to meet professionals from the media participating in the workshops.” The five Franklin Academy students that attended the competition were: Ashley Myrick, Emily Henao, Mia Nepola, Lyhannah Oreo and Judith Natino. I can’t imagine what the future holds for them.” Middle Years Programme students at Franklin Academy-Pembroke Pines participate in journalism class as part of the Design component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme. A total of 29 students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades are enrolled in Journalism. They create monthly publications, morning announcements, public service announcements and produce videos for different school events. The curriculum covers everything that they will find in the competition. “Most of the students enrolled in my journalism class are very passionate about this career,” said Cantore. “The class just molds their intrinsic abilities.” This is the 3rd year that students from the school have entered the FSPA competition. LEGALLY SPEAKING

Your 2018 Resolutions BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

A

s the year comes to a close, we naturally begin to think ahead to resolutions intended to change habits, improve our health, or make things better for ourselves and our families. Resolutions are simply promises we make to ourselves. Perhaps your new year’s resolutions will include walking 10,000+ steps each day, cleaning up your diet, or spending more time with your children. Whatever your resolutions may be, consider adding to your list an important one: protecting your loved ones. Let’s look at some basic questions and see if you answer the following: ▸▸ Who will take care of me if I can’t take care of myself? Do I have adequate insurance? Is there a clear successor to manage my financial and business affairs? Are my personal wishes set forth in writing so they are known and accessible when needed? ▸▸ After I am gone, how will my family and loved ones manage the debts, taxes, and other legal obligations I leave behind? Have I laid out a way forward to reach important family and financial goals? ▸▸ Who will take over my business if I am disabled or gone? What can I do to increase the probability that my business will survive after me? ▸▸ Who will care for my young children if my spouse and I cannot? What financial protection and instructions have I left for their care? ▸▸ When and how will my spouse, children and other loved ones receive their inheritance? How can I be sure they receive their gifts in a manner which maximizes use and enjoyment but protects against creditors, predators or their own possible fiscal mismanagement? Thinking about these matters can be absolutely overwhelming. But because we care about our families we are obligated to raise these tough questions and explore the answers. As spouses, we want to provide the resources and safeguards to make our loved ones’ futures more secure. As parents, we want our children to have a happy and secure life, especially if that life does not include us. Why not resolve to start the process of caring for your family should something happen to you? The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wisely said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Your first step is to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney to design and put into place a plan which will ensure that these are promises you can keep. If you have already done your estate planning, good for you! You should also make a habit of reviewing your plan, including beneficiary designations for insurance policies, retirement accounts and 401(k) plans. Changes in your financial situation, family circumstances, and the law may make the revision and updating of your estate plan essential. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

Pembroke Pines Update ASK THE MAYOR

BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS

W

hat alliterative city in Broward County has been named one of the USA’S Best Cities to live in? The trees in its name help. You may know the answer if you watch Jeopardy. However, the contestants did not. Last month on Jeopardy, our great city was the answer to that question, “What is… The City of Pembroke

Pines.” It’s no wonder we are on the nation’s radar. It has been another wonderful year for all of us in Pembroke Pines, and I want to send season’s greetings to all Pembroke Pines residents and businesses that make this a very special city in which to live and work. One of this year’s highlights was the opening of the Charles F. Dodge City Center, which is home to the new City Hall, along with a Civic Center for plays, conferences, small concerts and a variety of special events for all residents and visitors to enjoy. We’ve also enjoyed special exhibits at The Frank Art Gallery and remembered our Veterans at our new Memorial Park. We also experienced the turmoil of Hurricane Irma and are grateful that we did not feel her full force. Due

to Hurricane Irma, however, I want to remind everyone that the Pooches in Pines second annual Fur Ball was rescheduled for January 27, from 6pm to 11pm, at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, 601 City Center Way. As you know, Pooches in Pines is a non-profit community group of dedicated volunteers in Pembroke Pines that helps unite dogs found by the Pembroke Pines Police with their owners. You won’t want to miss out on this spectacular event. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there to show support for this worthy cause. For more information or to purchase tickets or be a sponsor, please visit www.poochesinpines.com and click the “Fur Ball” link. There are many other exciting events planned throughout the city during this holiday season, including our annual SnowFest, Sundaes with Santa and our Holiday Open House at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. I hope you get a chance to participate and have fun with family and friends. You can find many more activities and information on our website at www.ppines.com and on our facebook page at www.facebook.com/ cityofpembrokepines. I have great hopes for a new year in which all of our best expectations are met. May it be a safe and joyous holiday season for all of you, with a happy and prosperous New Year!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020 or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com.

Moderation: The Best Approach to Cosmetic Surgery

HOLIDAY PROMOTION

by Charles A. Messa, III, MD, FACS

To schedule your consultation with Dr. Messa, call the office at 954-659-7760.

ASK THE EXPERT

T

oo much of a good thing is not always the best. Moderation in life results in the ideal balance in many facets of our lives. This holds true for cosmetic surgery as well. From noninvasive treatments to plastic surgery procedures, moderation is the approach I feel yields the best long-term aesthetic results. We have all seen it – from celebrities to people in our local community - the “overdone” “overfilled” or excessively pulled face that resembles an aquatic animal or alien life form more than a natural aesthetic enhanced face or body. The most common mistake is the over injected face and mouth. When fillers are excessively injected to improve facial lines and wrinkles, the natural contours of the face become distorted. Too much Botox or Dysport can leave a patient with a flat, waxy appearing forehead or brow and a motionless mask-like face. The fish mouth or duck lips result from exaggerated injections of soft tissue fillers in and around the mouth. Soft tissue fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane should be injected to fill lines and creases and restore volume where is has been lost throughout the aging process. It is the physician’s responsibility to know when enough is enough with regard to appropriate injection volume. Facial skin laxity or looseness can’t be treated with fillers alone. Skin tightening, such as performed during a facelift, is necessary to lift and achieve the optimal cosmetic result in cases when soft tissue fillers are not sufficient. More filler does not tighten excess facial and neck skin. When facelift surgery is indicated, the technique utilized should be individualized according to the patient’s anatomy. Excessively large breast implants and oversized buttocks enhancement will lead to long term problems for these patients. Breast implant volume is ideally determined by careful measurement of a woman’s anatomy including breast width, height, soft tissue thickness and stretch. Bigger is not always better. Think moderation and individualized enhancement to achieve the ideal aesthetic improvements. The excessively large, wide buttock from large volume fat transfers or B.B.L. will eventually need to be reduced at some point in that person’s life as the effects of aging and gravity results in a large, sagging buttock. It is up to the physician, as the professional, to help guide a potential patient to make the appropriate decision to achieve best cosmetic enhancement. I highly recommend to any individual who is considering plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure to consult with a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) organization such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery with documented experience prior to proceeding. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

BY DEBBY TEICH

I

n early 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75.

Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. Each level of the community will include a central core, known as the “Town Center,” flanked by four distinct

What is “The Artis Way?” We follow what we call “The Artis Way.” Each letter of the word Artis stands for a tenet of the organization. ▸▸ “A” is the ability to have a voice. We want residents and their families to engage in open communication with our associates to make sure that what we’re doing is the right fit for them. This goes for our employees and management, too. ▸▸ “R” is about respecting and maintaining relationships. We’re like family here, because we’re so in tune with our residents’ likes and dislikes. ▸▸ “T” stands for treasuring each person’s uniqueness. ▸▸ “I” is for integrity. We promote dignity and respect, including those who work with and for Artis. ▸▸ “S” is for success and recognition, which we promote both inside and outside the building. What is special about your team members? While Artis is a newer company (established in 2012), the Artis team of associates and consultants has over 20 years of experience in senior housing and health care. Most of our team members have experienced Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias in their families, creating an added incentive and passion for our mission. How many people are affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia? Every 67 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. By 2025, the number of people ages 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million. Dementia is becoming more and more of an epidemic, which in turn means the more quality care we can offer, the more fulfilling the lives of those with dementia can lead.

“neighborhoods” that will serve as intimate living spaces. The Town Centers will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. Describe some of the design features. Influenced and refined by 20 years of operational experience, the new residence is thoughtfully designed to enhance residents’ cognition and quality of life by creating a home environment that is both nurturing and comfortable. Design features include smallerscale spaces, residential finishes, and the use of themes for wayfinding and location recognition.

42

Are there other facilities in the area? The residence will be the first freestanding memory care community of its kind in Davie.

Most people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 35 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule during December and, as such, last minute issues usually will not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement and/ or Parenting Plan. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and therefore many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any timesharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in odd numbered years, such as 2015, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Direct Line Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on in life. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time, usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle.

A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery can be used to treat the following conditions: chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. Its advantages include faster recovery, less pain and swelling, avoids large incisions, low risk of infection, can be done as an outpatient procedure, and allows a quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition, however, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible. Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults.
