A Bountiful Harvest

T

he month of October often conjures up images of harvests, autumn and falling leaves. Watching leaves turn red and fall is less of a common occurrence here than for our friends up north. Agriculture is, however, still an important part of Broward County and South Florida. According to the USDA’s 2012 Census of Agriculture, there were almost 15 thousand acres of land being used for farming in Broward County. This farmland generates about $50 million a year in livestock and crop sales. These figures do not include the well-established horse economy in Plantation, Davie and Southwest Ranches. While most of Broward County is built out with neighborhoods, city parks and commercial developments, there are still over 600 farms producing everything from bell peppers to beef. These farms preserve a past where much of West Broward was composed of ranches and orange groves. There are a number of farms and nurseries where residents can buy locally grown produce. Check out our calendar section each month to find farmers markets in your area. Remember, October harvests happen in paradise too! Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

CBRE and Rebuilding Together Help Pembroke Pines Hurricane Victim BY DEBBY TEICH

L

ast year, Hurricane Irma swept through the area and left devastation in its wake. Many low-income families, including Rosie of Pembroke Pines, struggled to recover. After Irma, Rosie experienced financial hardships and also had to cope with the death of her mother. CBRE and Rebuilding Together recently gathered volunteers to provide critical repairs and renovations to Rosie’s home to help her get back on her feet. During the hurricane, she took shelter in her home with her pets, but intense winds and rain damaged her house and fence. Although Rebuilding America initially helped Rosie by removing storm debris and a large downed tree that damaged her fence, they identified multiple areas of her home that still needed urgent attention. CBRE employees and the local Rebulding Together affiliate, joined by Miami-based Wellington Construction Group, provided the critical home repairs and renovations needed at the property. They repatched and painted walls, replaced windows, landscaped, repaired floors and provided carpentry and plumbing repairs.

“Rebuilding Together Broward County is committed to helping low-income homeowners living in safe, secure housing,” said Robin Marin, Executive Director. “But Rosie’s situation was dire, and we needed tremendous help to restore her home. Thankfully, CBRE jumped at the chance to help her during her time of need.” Rebuilding Together Broward County is a local affiliate of a nationwide non-profit, which provides high quality renovations to families and homes in need. In Broward, the organization engages volunteers to perform home repairs, safety improvements, energy retrofits and neighborhood revitalization in an effort to assist low income homeowners who are elderly, disabled and veterans. Each year, Rebuilding Together affiliates and nearly 100,000 volunteers complete about 10,000 rebuild projects.

Move Your Feet During “Walktober” BY DEBBY TEICH

P

hysical activity doesn’t need to be complicated. Something as simple as a daily walk can help you reach your fitness and weight-loss goals, and lead a healthier life. With cooler temperatures, October is a perfect time to get into a regular walking routine. “Walktober” is a month-long campaign designed to inspire everyone to make walking a priority - in October and beyond. The goal is to walk 31 minutes a day for the 31 days in October and then continue the effort. The Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center has a program to help members achieve their goals. “Walking may be the simplest form of exercise, but a simple 30-minute walk every day can definitely improve our health and well-being,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Supervisor. “The only equipment you need is a pair of sneakers and you’re ready to go! In our 2018 Walktober Fitness Challenge, you will find motivation and socialization by joining others who are ready to lace up their walking shoes, hit the trails, and live a more active lifestyle!” During the Challenge, you can walk outside at the SWFP Center, in your neighborhood, in parks, on local walking trails, or even indoors at the mall if you prefer. You can also walk on a treadmill,

ride a stationary bike or participate in one of the Center’s many exercise classes. The important thing is to keep moving, and maintain an active lifestyle that will last a lifetime. Every Monday in October, from 9am-10am, one of the certified fitness instructors will lead participants in a group walk. She will also provide nutritional guidance and weekly weigh-ins. On the other days of the week, participants will walk outside (or workout inside the center) on their own. They are encouraged to take selfies when they are outside walking and post on social media using #PinesWalktober.

Using the honor system, participants can log their walkingtimes/weight on their Walktober Monthly Fitness Log, which is provided. All participants will get a free prize at the end of the month based on performance. Their names will be entered in a free gift raffle at the end of the month. All participants must be registered members of the SWFP Community Center, which is free to join. Registration and participant packets are available at the Activities Desk. Of course, the faster, farther and more frequently you walk, the greater the benefits. Some of the benefits of regular walking can include: ▸▸ Maintain a healthy weight ▸▸ Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes ▸▸ Strengthen your bones and muscles ▸▸ Improve your mood ▸▸ Improve your balance and coordination ▸▸ Alleviate depression and fatigue ▸▸ And more The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center is located at 301 NW 103 Avenue in Pembroke Pines. How to Improve Memory Recall for People with Dementia BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES or those diagnosed with dementia, memory loss can be difficult to face. Even in the beginning stages, losing memories can be frustrating and discouraging. At Artis Senior Living, we’re dedicated to helping people with dementia live the best they can every day. To do that, we encourage those with dementia or other forms of memory loss to participate in activities that challenge their brain and help improve memory. Here are a few memory reminders for dementia you can use with a loved one.

F

Exercise Staying active is key to maintaining physical health and is important for mental health, too. Studies have shown that exercise can improve memory and slow dementia in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment. Mild cognitive impairment often progresses to dementia. For those in the later stages of dementia, functional exercises can help people recall movements used to do everyday activities, such as getting dressed. Listen to Music Music has long been recognized as a reliable cue for bringing up memories. Just like how music works as an excellent mnemonic device in everyday life, music can be used to recall memories for people with dementia. Play a song familiar to your loved one and they just may light up, sing along, or even recall a memory related to the music. Look at Photos Similar to how music can jog the memory, visual cues can help people with dementia recall faces, places, or moments. Looking through photos is a great way to stir up fond memories of family, celebrations, and holidays gone by. Depending on the stage of dementia your loved one is in, it’s also the perfect opportunity to talk about what’s happening in the pictures. Don’t pressure a loved one if they can’t remember what’s taking place in the photos. If they do recall some details, take the time to write down some information on the back for your family to cherish forever. Make a Memory Box Memory boxes are popular in the world of dementia care for good reason. Filled with photos, keepsakes, and other mementos, memory boxes help spark conversation with your loved one, inspire memory recall, and bring up good times from the past. Because a memory box is filled with different types of items, it also encourages those with dementia to use a variety of senses, including, sight and touch, to experience the world around them. Smell Familiar Scents Smell is one of the strongest senses associated with memory. Roses may remind your loved one of a special garden they had growing up, or perhaps their wedding day. Smell can bring up pleasant memories, and it’s a sense that can be strengthened the more we use it. A better sense of smell can make food more enjoyable, promoting overall health.

Pembroke Pines Residents Take Out Their Selfie Sticks BY DEBBY TEICH

C

They took selfies in front of the Commission Chambers, City Center and many other places. They also took selfies with the Mayor and participated in a group shot. They shared their photos on social media using #CityHallSelfie and @FLCities. They also posted them on the Pembroke Pines Special Events Facebook page.

For some, striking a pose meant winning a mention in the Florida League of Cities “Quality Cities” magazine, as well as a trophy. Some of the award categories included: Best #CityHallSelfie of the Day; Most Creative #CityHallSelfie; State with the Most #CityHallSelfies; Best Dressed #CityHallSelfie and more.

ommissioners, residents, businesses and staff recently took out their selfie sticks to show off their beautiful city. For one day, the City of Pembroke Pines, along with the Florida League of Cities and cities across the country, participated in a national event called #CityHallSelfie Day. Spearheaded by the Engaging Local Government Leaders organization, the event was created to encourage residents to show their spirit by stopping by their city hall or a government building, posing for a selfie and sharing it on social media. It also got the community thinking about local government, whether they realized it or not. It was also an opportunity to win recognition and bragging rights. “This was a really fun way to show everyone how special the residents of Pembroke Pines are and why we love them,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis, who encouraged everyone to take a selfie.

PPPD Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity BY DEBBY TEICH

S

everal sworn and civilian staff with the Pembroke Pines Police Department recently joined with Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity Broward to help construct a home for a deserving family in Broward County. Habitat for Humanity empowers families to help themselves. It is a partnership, not a giveaway program. Habitat’s homeowner families buy the houses that Habitat builds and renovates. Habitat homeowners also invest hundreds of hours of their own labor working alongside volunteers. As a result, Habitat for Humanity houses are affordable to low-income families around the world. PPPD’s involvement began when Sergeant Jennifer Schmidt reached out to Habitat for Humanity to find out how she could get involved in the organization. After speaking with a representative, she learned that she could volunteer individually or coordinate a team. She decided to send an email to police agency members to inquire if there were any others interested in joining her and the response was overwhelming. There were so many volunteers that she needed to coordinate two teams for two different days. On both dates, the volunteers were assigned to Roosevelt Gardens in Fort Lauderdale. The Habitat Broward construction staff provided the tools and training. The volunteers assisted with the interior

framing of multiple Habitat homes in the area. They also helped with the cleanup of debris that had been scattered around the property grounds. “I am a firm believer in making our world a better place through selfless service,” said Sergeant Jennifer Schmidt. “Over the nearly ten years that I’ve been with our police agency, I’ve witnessed members of the Pembroke Pines Police Department continuously demonstrate kindness and compassion. I couldn’t be any more blessed than to be a part of a City who has so many good-hearted people.”

City of Pembroke Pines Gathers for Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony BY DEBBY TEICH

T

he city of Pembroke Pines held an observance on September 11, 2018 to remember and honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks. The Annual Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony took place at the Pembroke Pines Memorial Park. The audience was filled with survivors, families who lost loved ones, local fire fighters, and police task force units. The Ceremony recognized America’s First Responders and both the men and women who courageously faced the terror attacks on September 11, 2001. The program included the Presentation of Colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guards, a moment of silence, lowering of flags, patriotic music, a chorus performance by FSU Charter Elementary School, words from U.S. Army Colonel Thomas W. Hanley and comments from Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and other City Officials. “This city will never forget,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis. “We will continue to have these ceremonies.” “We honor our heroes of 9/11 by uniting for a common cause,” said Vice Mayor Thomas Good, Jr. “A cause that was exemplified by our heroes on that day. A cause that is demonstrated by our police and fire

each and every day. That cause is to love and protect our brothers and sisters.” On September 11, 2011, the tenth anniversary of the attack on Freedom, the City of Pembroke Pines unveiled its September 11th Memorial at the Pembroke Pines City Center Memorial Pavilion, 10300 Pines Boulevard. The powerful art project honors the 9/11 victims, survivors and those who assisted in the recovery. It is open throughout the year for people to visit, mediate, pray, and remember.

Osteoarthritis of the Foot and Ankle BY ROBERT H. SHEINBERG, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

O

steoarthritis is a wearing out of the cartilage at the end of the bones that form a joint. The cartilage gives us smooth gliding joints and allows the joint to function without pain. When the cartilage wears down, bones start to rub against each other causing pain. Swelling and bone spurs develop around the joint as well. It is usually caused by injuries to the joint from trauma or from repetitive stress. Abnormal bone and joint position may also be present that may be hereditary in nature or acquired over time. Stiffness in the joint (foot or ankle) is almost always present. When getting up from sitting or when getting out of bed there may be difficulty weightbearing. As one walks it may improve. Over time the stiffness lasts longer and the joint starts to ache. There will be a chronic low-grade swelling to the joint that is affected and difficulty with certain exercises or shoe gear will also be present. There will be tenderness around the joint and pain with moving the joint. Difficulty running

or being generally active because of the pain will also be present. Treatment is aimed at identifying the joint

involved and reducing the inflammation. Oral or injectible medication will help to reduce some of the inflammation and proper shoe gear or orthot-

ics may help to lessen the inflammation around the area. Physical therapy may be necessary to improve range of motion and stability. When conservative care fails, arthroscopic procedures may be necessary to remove any of the damaged tissue in the joint. Open procedures may also be needed if the joint is not accessible to arthroscopy. In some cases, surgery may be necessary on the joint itself to reposition the bones in the joint giving them better position, allowing more normal mobility. If arthritis is severe, joint replacement or joint fusions may be necessary and will have a huge positive impact on one’s life, allowing freedom of mobility to perform activities of daily living and also sports. Prognosis is good to excellent in almost all cases. Dr. Robert Sheinberg is a Board-Certified Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialist practicing in Weston and Pembroke Pines since 1988. He specializes in the treatment of infants, children, teens and adults with injuries, pain and deformities. His associates, Doctors Messina, Cohen, DeSimone, Moya, Bertot, Shenassa, Jones and Goodner, care for all musculoskeletal injuries from head to toe. This is Zoe, a 1 1/2 year old Miniature Schnauzer. Her favorite person is her mommy, but she honestly loves all of us! She has a toy chest full of at least 75 toys, and plays with all of them. She especially loves to play tug of war. Zoe loves to go in the backyard and play and run like crazy. She is quicker then quick, can turn on a dime and is extremely athletic. Still a puppy, she is petrified of thunder and lightning and loud noises. Zoe is the sweetest happiest puppy ever and loves everyone she comes in contact with.

ASK THE EXPERT

Choosing a Plastic Surgeon BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, MD, FACS

T

he first question a prospective patient should be asking when choosing a plastic surgeon is, “Is my doctor board certified in Plastic Surgery?” You should trust your care for cosmetic surgery only to a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association to certify physicians in over 24 medical specialties. The easiest way to check a doctor’s credentials is to go to www.abms.org to determine which medical specialty they are board certified in. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is not a recognized board by the ABMS. Equally important is that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. These societies require not only board certification, but also documented experience in cosmetic plastic surgery. Patients should also know how much experience a surgeon has in the procedure you are requesting. If you are interested in a breast augmentation, ask your doctor how many he or she does a week, a year. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to do the same procedure? Many physicians who perform liposuction in office facilities don’t have hospital privileges to do these procedures. Hospitals will only grant operative privileges to physicians with welldocumented training in that procedure. The procedure should be performed in an accredited facility like our office, which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilites, Inc. (AAAASF) or a licensed accredited hospital or outpatient surgery center. A common misconception is that office surgery is not as safe as hospital surgery. This is not true. The safety of a procedure is dependent on the credentials of the surgeon, accreditation of the facility, and the presence of a board-certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist. Many surgeons will tell prospective patients that they only perform surgery in a hospital setting because it is safer. These surgeons usually don’t have an office that is properly equipped or certified for outpatient surgery. I, like many other experienced board-certified plastic surgeons, offer patients a choice to have surgery in our certified private office facility or the hospital depending on the overall medical conditions and the procedure being performed. Finally, assuming the physician has all the appropriate credentials and level of expertise, I stress the patient choose a surgeon with whom you feel most comfortable, who has a kind, attentive staff, in an environment where you can get the best care. Ask for patient referrals and patient testimonials. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. LEGALLY SPEAKING

Planning for the Unexpected More than a law firm. We’re your neighbors.

BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE t’s Tuesday morning. Your husband’s flight to Venezuela just departed. In the family room, twoyear-old Sophia is amusing herself while waiting for Jennifer, your new 16-year-old neighbor who has been babysitting a few mornings this summer. It’s your special time to run errands or get in some exercise. Today is the perfect day to try out a new pair of rollerblades. Lace up. Ear buds in. Sunscreen on. You tell Jennifer you’ll be back in about 90 minutes and off you go to the local park. It’s unusually quiet this morning. While skating along at a fast pace, you hit a rock, lose your balance and fly wildly out of control into a swale of high grass, where your phone ends up behind a bush and you hit your head. Everything goes dark. Thankfully, a jogger finds you and calls 911. You are transported to a hospital but are unconscious. With no identification, the hospital doesn’t know who you are or whom to call. Hours later, Jennifer becomes concerned when you don’t return home as expected. She calls your cell phone, but there’s no answer. She also tries your husband’s number which goes directly to voice mail. Afternoon arrives and Jennifer begins to really worry. She has plans of her own, and you were supposed to be home hours ago. What should she do? She calls her own mother who advises, “Call the police.”

Two uniformed officers arrive and ask questions. They check police reports and hospitals. There is an unidentified woman at a local hospital who may be the missing mom, but she is unconscious. The police evaluate the situation and determine there is no family member present to take care of Sophia. What happens next is a parent’s nightmare. Your daughter is now in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families. Is our story farfetched? Probably. But while this type of scenario is not likely to happen to your family, it reminds us to make sure we plan for the unexpected. At a minimum, every family should have standard written babysitter instructions which include contact information for family members and friends who should be contacted if parents cannot be reached. In addition, an attorney can help to prepare a Power of Attorney for Childcare, authorization for the care, custody, medical care, and even travel for your minor children. It is certainly not necessary to consult an attorney to put together babysitter instructions. This is something that parents can create on their own. However, other legal documents are best drafted by an experienced estate planning attorney who can offer counsel and ensure that documents are properly prepared and executed. You want to make sure your legal documents work when you need them. Having a family plan for the unexpected may help keep small incidents from becoming big problems. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

Advances in Mammography: Fighting Cancer in 3D Regular screening mammograms, which create two-dimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates threedimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This 3D technology is available at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Breast Center at the Weston-main campus and at the new Coral Springs Family Health Center. The 3D mammogram is also called breast tomosynthesis. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” Maria Artze, MD says Maria Artze, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. “Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap, and so improves the radiologist’s ability to detect breast cancer.”

The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses Cassann Blake, MD and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.” For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy

(tissue sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you.” To schedule a consultation with Dr. Blake or Dr. Margaret Thompson in Weston or Coral Springs, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/BreastCancer.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Difficult Issue of Relocation BY EVAN BARON nyone involved in family law, whether it be an attorney, mediator or even a judge, will agree that relocation cases are often the most difficult and challenging. Let me first explain the concept of relocation. A relocation occurs when one parent is seeking permission to relocate with a minor child more than 50 miles from their home. This generally occurs post judgment, meaning after the parties have already been divorced; although it could be an element that is addressed during the dissolution itself. It is not the parent’s relocation that becomes an issue, but rather the minor child’s. Several years ago, the Florida Legislature passed a relocation statute, which dictates how these matters must proceed. A parent who was or is married to the other parent (paternity cases are not always the same) must receive either written permission from the other parent or a court order allowing the relocation to occur. Assuming there is no agreement between the parents, Florida Statutes require the “relocating parent” to file a Petition to Relocate. If a time-sharing schedule has already been established by the court, a request to modify the time-sharing schedule must also be included. The Petition must be served upon the other parent, who will have twenty days to respond. The petition must include the following language: “A RESPONSE TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL PETITION OBJECTING TO RELOCATION MUST BE MADE IN WRITING, FILED WITH THE COURT, AND SERVED ON THE PARENT OR OTHER PERSON SEEKING TO RELOCATE WITHIN 20 DAYS AFTER SERVICE OF THIS SUPPLEMENTAL PETITION TO RELOCATE. IF YOU FAIL TO TIMELY OBJECT TO THE RELOCATION, THE RELOCATION WILL BE ALLOWED, UNLESS IT IS NOT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILD, WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE AND WITHOUT A HEARING.” The Petition must include the following: ▸▸ A description of the location of the intended new residence, including the state, city and specific address if known ▸▸ The home telephone number of the intended new residence ▸▸ The date of the intended move ▸▸ A detailed statement of the specific reasons for the proposed relocation. If it is based upon a job offer which has been reduced to writing, it must be attached. ▸▸ A proposal for the modified time-sharing schedule. In deciding whether to grant the relocation, the Court must consider: ▸▸ The relationship between the minor child and the nonrelocating parent ▸▸ The age and developmental stage of the child and the likely impact a relocation will have on that child ▸▸ The feasibility of preserving the relationship between the child and the nonrelocating parent ▸▸ The child’s preference, taking into consideration the age and maturity of the child ▸▸ Whether the relocation will enhance the general quality of life for the child and the parent seeking relocation ▸▸ The reasons the nonrelocating parent is in fact objecting ▸▸ The current economic and employment circumstances of each parent ▸▸ Whether the relocation is being sought in good faith ▸▸ Any other factor affecting the best interests of the child As you can see, this is a complicated issue. It would be best for both parties to seek legal counsel before considering such a move.
