New Year Brings New Beginnings
I
t’s another New Year, and for Our City Media that means a new beginning. New Year’s Day marked the start of the new year. It also served as a point in time when many of us started changes in our lives. Our City Media was no exception. We have upgraded the look, feel and layout of our magazines for 2018. We’ve made every change with you, our reader, in mind. We’ve improved our calendar pages; changed the primary font to an easier, clearer to read style; increased the weight of the paper Our City magazines are printed on. Have no fear, these improvements will only serve to enhance your reading experience. Each magazine still contains all the critical community and school news you have come to expect. Our team of highly experienced and talented journalists will continue to bring you the latest happenings in your community. We have also re-launched our website, www.ourcityplantation.com. Here, you will find a digital version of our publication, with the same types of content found in our print magazines. While you are on the site, check out what’s going on in your neighboring cities. With eight publications, Our City Media is proud to be South Florida’s leader in community news. We truly hope you enjoy Our City’s new look. We have been working on this for some time. If you have any suggestions for making the magazine even better, feel free to drop us a line at publisher@ourcitymedia.com. Sincerely,
Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

I would go to the theater and see the ushers in their uniforms but never knew it was an option for me to do it.” “I have some background in performing arts. I especially love classical ballet and classical music,” added King. “It’s a pleasure to serve the community and interact with the patrons that love art.” Volunteers are eligible to begin ushering performances upon completion of a three-hour orientation session that includes a tour of the Broward Center and an introduction to ushering. S
ince 1977 Dr. Marc Schwartz has kept his patients smiling at his Plantation practice. Throughout the years, he has combined the science of dentistry with his artistic flair for creating beautiful smiles. He’s also pleased that his son Dr. Eli Schwartz followed in the family tradition as a fourth-generation dentist and joined him in his state-of-the-art facility. Advanced Dentistry of Plantation recognizes that all their patients are unique and deserve to receive dental care that reflects their individual needs. The experienced and talented dental team is committed to working with their patients and creating a comfortable, stress-free, and rewarding dental experience every time a patient visits their practice. Maintaining dental health and improving smiles always makes the experienced dentist smile himself. Besides being satisfied with his work, Dr. Schwartz is most proud of the long-term relationships he has built with his patients, and in some cases, he is treating third-generation family members. Dr. Marc Schwartz recently took the time to answer some commonly asked questions about his practice. What sets Advanced Dentistry of Plantation apart from all the other dental practices in southeastern Florida? First, my son and I are continuing a 100year family tradition of providing outstanding dentistry services. Our office is conducive to providing the best dental care possible to our valued patients. We wanted to create a place where we would feel comfortable sending our own spouses or children – since we consider our patients and our loved one’s part of our extended family. State-ofthe-art technology, an appointment schedule that runs on time, warm and friendly staff members, and luxurious amenities all contribute to a positive patient experience at our office. Tell us about your office. Our state-of-the-art facility, serving patients from Plantation, Boca Raton, and Fort Lauderdale, offers the latest dental technology and advanced dental procedures by our cosmetic dental team. We also have amenities such as satellite televisions, comfortable chairs, and soothing décor. Advanced Dentistry of Plantation prides itself on maintaining a clean, efficient office. Hygiene is extremely important to us, so we make sure the treatment rooms, instruments, and tools that we use are thoroughly sterilized and ready for the next appointment. We also value our patients’ time; we understand everyone has busy schedules, so it’s our goal to start and finish appointments on time. What can patients expect when visiting Advanced Dentistry of Plantation? Patient comfort is our goal. The dentists and staff at our practice make patient comfort a top priority and offer many amenities to help put patients at ease. We create a relaxing, friendly environment where families
and individuals can feel welcome and confident about their cosmetic dentist team, and the care they receive. At our practice, we administer anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and other forms of sedation dentistry to make our treatments and procedures as painless as possible. We will work with each patient to ensure that he or she is completely relaxed and comfortable throughout the appointment. The most calming and comforting amenity can be the gentle support and reassurance of our dental professionals. We take a warm and personable approach with everyone who sits in our treatment chairs in order to help them understand that their dental work is being performed in the quickest, easiest, and most pain-free way possible. What services do you provide? Of course, we take care of all general dentistry needs, but we also offer Cosmetic Dentistry, Dental Implants, Invisalign®, Restorative Dentistry, Teeth Whitening Treatments, Full Mouth Restoration, Veneers, and all Emergency Dental Care. Additionally, we offer facial aesthetics which include Botox ®, Juvedern ® XC, Kybella ®, and Voluma ®.
Would you like to share any testimonials? Patients have been so happy with their experiences that many that took their time to express their gratitude. These are just a few that I’m happy to share… “I was thrilled to find your staff to be caring and calming. And you all bent over backwards to make me comfortable.” – Meghan “Who would believe that going to the dentist could be a pleasant experience?” – Elliot “For at least 30 years we have been going to Dr. Schwartz. Everyone in the office is pleasant, and professional. We actually look forward to our scheduled dental visits because of the relationship we have developed with the doctor throughout the years. We always refer anyone we know to the office.” – Gus & Pearl ▸▸ New Patient Special - $99 (includes initial exam (D0150), x-rays, and a prophy (D1110) ▸▸ Invisalign Special - $500 OFF plus free whitening ▸▸ Botox Special - Buy one area of Botox (up to 25 units) for $275 (Reg), Get the second area for $200. ▸▸ Juvederm Special - Buy One Regular Syringe of Juvederm Ultra Plus for Reg. $545 and get a Syringe of Volbella for Your Lips at $199 (Reg. $399). Climbing the Ladder of Success – New Sunrise Fire Chief Appointed BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or two decades John K. McNamara has been with Sunrise Fire-Rescue. In 1997 he began his career as a firefighter/paramedic. He quickly rose through the ranks as a rescue supervisor, Lieutenant, and Captain before being named Deputy Fire Chief of Operations in 2014. Last June he was appointed Acting Chief upon the retirement of former Fire Chief Thomas DiBernardo. Most recently McNamara was appointed as the City’s new Fire Chief by City Manager Richard Salamon. On November 3rd, he was sworn in as Fire Chief by Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan. His appointment to Fire Chief marks the third such internal promotion in Sunrise Fire-Rescue’s 40-plus year history. “Chief McNamara has demonstrated tremendous leadership throughout his Sunrise Fire-Rescue career,” said City Manager Salamon. “He is well respected among
his peers in the Department, and in the first responder community at large. With Chief McNamara at the helm, I am confident that Sunrise Fire-Rescue will continue to provide an outstanding level of service to the residents and visitors of our City.” Chief McNamara has been a Sunrise resident since 1981 when he first moved to the City of Sunrise with his parents in 1981. He and AnnMarie, his wife of 20 years, love the City so much that they choose to also love and raise their two children, Kayla and Patrick, here. “I am extremely humbled by the opportunity to represent the City of Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department, said Chief McNamara. “I look forward to continuing the strong relationship we have, and the service delivery we provide to residents,
business owners, and visitors of our city.” Chief McNamara earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Leadership and Management from St. Thomas University. He is also a graduate of the Emergency Services Leadership Institute program, and has completed professional-level coursework through the National Fire Academy. Chief McNamara is a steadfast champion for his brothers and sisters in the Fire Service. In addition, he has worked to help shape and improve the fire suppression and emergency medical service delivery system, both in Sunrise and throughout Broward County. No Bluffing - JAFCO’s First-Ever Poker Tournament Raised Almost $30,000! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
U
sually it’s the JAFCO ladies’ luncheons that bring in funding for the nonprofit organization which serves abused and neglected children and those with disabilities in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. However, this time the men decided to have a fundraiser of their own. It was a full-house at the organization’s first-ever men’s only “All In for JAFCO Poker Tournament”. More than 70 guests came out to put their best cards forward at JAFCO Children’s Ability Center to raise money for those with developmental disabilities. The event raised close to an astounding $30,000 for the Children’s Ability Center. “We’ve seen firsthand the incredible support that JAFCO provides to our community. We are always awe-struck by how much time and effort our wives spend organizing events to raise much needed funds for JAFCO,” said Perry Isenberg, one of the lead committee members who spearheaded the idea for the poker tournament. “We wanted to create an event where the husbands could also show their support. And now we’ve proven we can as well – and it’s a success!” The event featured a casino show girl, raffle, dinner and drinks. High-end pub food was served to support the ‘manly’ theme and guests accessed an open bar. Hijinks Sports Bar in Boca Raton graciously provided two waitresses to take orders not interrupt card play. Throughout the tournament, players had a chance to win several prizes including a seven-day cruise on Royal Caribbean. Jim Orleans of Boca Raton was the lucky winner of the cruise and the entire tournament. Attendees who purchased raffle tickets were presented a key to open

a locked jewel-filled box. Keith Singer of Boca Raton, was the lucky winner who had the right key to open the box of jewels. Sziro Diamonds of Coral Springs provided the grand raffle prize of 24-karat white gold diamond hoops and a white gold diamond bar necklace. “This men’s night out event raised money for JAFCO, and also boosted camaraderie and increased awareness about this wonderful Center right here in our community.” added committee member Sean Fetterman. The Children’s Ability Center offers families respite care where children can spend a day, weekend or up to two weeks of overnight fun experiences – allowing parents to take a short break. The Ability Center is now a research institute in partnership with Nova Southeastern University who is studying the impact that these programs and services are having on the strength of the family unit. For more information about the event, JAFCO or the Children’s Ability Center, please contact JAFCO Development Associate Jessica Stein at 954-315-8698 or JStein@jafco.org.

nyone that volunteers at JAFCO, a nonprofit organization which serves abused and neglected children and those with disabilities in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, makes a difference in a child’s life. But one individual who has made a major impact was recently awarded the “Sunrise Hero Award” by the Sunrise Chamber of Commerce. Janice Sawyer was one of seven winners selected from the 50 nominees. Sawyer has a special affinity for the children and has spent 11 years working in JAFCO’s Emergency Shelter. “Janice has something special that cannot be learned,” said JAFCO Executive Director Sarah Franco. “She has a way of communicating with children who have been neglected or experienced abuse, urging them to share what they are feeling instead of acting out as many abused children do. Something inside Janice’s soul connects with the children and encourages them to open up to her.” Over the years, Sawyer has helped care for numerous children who have passed through the Emergency

Shelter. Though her position there, she has created special relationships with many of the children that
live in the Group Homes, especially Michael. As a result of the suffering the young boy once endured, Michael has extreme difficulty expressing himself to his friends or the staff. Although the apprehensive child does not like to speak to people, he always spoke
to Sawyer, and sometimes only to her. “Michael and I had a special connection. I was able to read him and saw his pain,” said Sawyer. “When you see a child hurting like that, you want nothing more than to make the hurting stop. If it meant getting in my car and driving him to school, I thought, I could do that. If it meant a short early-morning phone call? I can do that, too.” Over the years, Sawyer has also established strong bonds with the local schools, particularly in Sunrise. The Village Elementary School teachers know Sawyer well, as she makes a concerted effort to walk all the children inside on their first day to make them feel safe and assure them there is nothing to worry about. Additionally, Sawyer always makes sure to inform the school staff that the children have been removed from their families, and asks the teachers and administration to please look out for them during the day. When classes end for the day, Sawyer waits inside to pick them up so that she can comfort them and ease any anxiety they may be experiencing. She truly is a hero!

And Then There Were 10… Nine of Ten Grandchildren Born at Plantation General Hospital! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

he Maternity Center at Plantation General Hospital (PGH) is very familiar to Cheryl and Ron Bramos, and the hospital staff is also very familiar with the Plantation couple. They are the proud grandparents of ten grandchildren. This past October they welcomed their tenth grandchild at the nationally recognized maternity center where their other eight grandchildren were also born. Just one month prior, their ninth grandchild was born at Boca Regional Hospital. “We feel like we know the security guard at the front desk of PGH because of our many visits to the hospital every time a grandchild is born,” said Cheryl. “Plantation General has been good to our family. We have not been asked to leave when all 20+ of us show up at one time to see the new family member,” added Ron. “It can get loud with all of us in one hospital room!” The Bramos’ children have enjoyed having their babies at PGH. They are so appreciative that all the nurses, doctors, and even the CEO, go above and beyond to be sure the birthing experience, as well as the hospital stay, are the most pleasurable and memorable during the magical milestone moment. “The private maternity rooms are very large, some of the largest I’ve ever seen in hospitals,” exclaimed Ron. “I realized how blessed we are to have a hospital in our community with such a fine facility, as well as high-caliber doctors and nurses,” said Cheryl Bramos. “Dr.
Isabel Otero has delivered all nine grandchildren here in this hospital and that is very special to me. It reminds me of living in a small town, yet having access to big city hospital right around the corner.” Ron and Cheryl Bramos are pictured with their beautiful growing family: Josh and Maegan Wallace, parents of Weston (6), Braxton (4), Baylor (2), Landon (1), Joshua and Mackenzie Bramos, parents of Nash (6), Dallan (4), Harper (2), Shiloh (4 months), Kevin and Hannah Rariden, parents of Malakai (2 months).

HEALTH CARE
When Should Seniors Stop Driving? BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES
T
he issue of driving is one many seniors and their families will face. It is one that is often inevitable when there is a diagnosis of dementia. It is important to know that a person with dementia usually does not self-limit his/her own driving. And in almost every state, physicians are not mandated to report someone they feel is unsafe to drive. For those reasons, the burden often falls onto a family member to make the decision. When trying to decide if the person should continue to drive, there are many factors to consider other than memory. Families tend to focus on if the person remembers where they are going and are they at risk of getting lost. The solution is to allow driving to continue, but only to familiar locations. However, people with dementia experience deficits in several other areas that are key to driving. For example, it is common for a person to have problems with depth perception. This makes it difficult for the driver to determine how close other cars and objects are. Determining if there is time to pull out into traffic or turn before an approaching car reaches them are some of the issues faced when there is impaired depth perception. Decision making and the ability to anticipate events also becomes more problematic. A driver may see a ball roll into the road, but be unable to anticipate that a child could be running for it. Or he/she may be taxed with deciding quickly what to do when an unanticipated event does occur. Divided attention also can become challenging for a person with dementia. The ability to look at the speedometer and then back at the road can be difficult. The driver may find it challenging to continue to focus on driving, while giving attention to a bicyclist or pedestrian on the side of the road. In addition to problems due to dementia, there are normal changes that occur with aging that bring their own challenges. A decline in vision and hearing, decreased flexibility, and a slower reaction time are common changes that happen as a person ages. All key factors to a person being able to drive successfully. Regular inspections of your loved one’s car for dings, dents, or scratches may help to determine if there are issues, especially with depth perception. Talk to your loved one’s neighbors to determine if they have noticed any problems. And go for a drive with your loved one to observe any possible difficulties. Watch to see if they are signaling properly. Do they check thoroughly before changing lanes? Are they able to properly maintain their speed and the distance between cars? It is important to know that if a senior is involved in a car accident, he/she is more likely to suffer serious injuries than a younger driver. And statistics show that a senior citizen is at a higher risk of death when involved in a car crash, even one that appears minor. If you are concerned about your loved ones driving, please discuss this with his/her physician. Although a doctor is not mandated to report, many are more willing when they know the family is on board. In addition, explore the use of a driving assessment program and tools available which can help in determining abilities and limitations. 017 presented us with many challenges including a hurricane, political issues, and world-wide tensions. All of this can seem overwhelming and at times impossible to deal with. But, a new year always brings with it hope for a better tomorrow. Much has been written about New Year’s Resolutions. Much has also been written about failed New Year’s Resolutions. Too often we make promises to ourselves that we know aren’t going to be kept, or are too lofty to live up to. These failed resolutions also lead to disappointment and a sense of self-doubt. Sometimes the best resolutions are the simple ones, the small things, which when compounded together, bring great results.

As 2017 came to a close, so did our celebration of 60 years of the Fire Department serving the citizens of Plantation. I often think about the 22 visionaries who formed the Fire Department and resolved to make Plantation a better place. It was that resolution that contributed to making Plantation the great city it is today. For 2018, let’s all pledge to do simple things that have big impacts, like treating each other with respect and dignity, showing tolerance and acceptance of those who don’t necessarily think like us or dress like us. Put someone else’s needs before yours and extend a hand to those in need. Let’s resolve to be a little nicer to each other every day and watch how that comes back to us. Of course, many of us would like to lose weight, put more money aside, and quit whatever habits trouble us. But those things don’t always work out the way we want. If we all resolve to simply be good neighbors, imagine what we can accomplish. Have a safe and prosperous New Year. E. Laney Stearns Fire Chief For more information and safety tips, visit www.Plantation.org or Facebook.com/City of Plantation Fire Department.

Happy New Year Plantation! BY CHIEF W. HOWARD HARRISON PLANTATION POLICE DEPARTMENT
T
he Plantation Police Department’s mission statement expresses the goal of the agency to improve the quality of life for citizens of Plantation through a partnership with the community that promotes safe and secure streets and neighborhoods. I’m Se Habla Español! proud to say we are continually striving to do so through many community efforts and our new year resolutions are to do even more. Direct Line The Plantation Police Department (PPD) was very busy during the last quarter of 2017. We participated in the annual Halloween and Safety Festival at Volunteer Park. This provided the Special discounted rates for The Greater Hollywood Chamber Members opportunity to speak and interact with Plantation residents in a fun setting. Our Call Denise Caligiuri for officers Advertising loved takingInfo photos with the children and our K-9s loved getting in on the action by demonstrating their sharp skills. in Miami's Community Newspapers Just in time for those pumpkin spiced lattes was our popular “Coffee with a Cop” event at one of our local Starbucks. The opportunity allows for real conversations about important matters in a friendly atmosphere where trust can be built. Both officers and citizens learn about each other, form bonds, and develop relationships which help weave the fabric of a better community. We plan on having many more in 2018. In October we also had a promotion ceremony where four fantastic officers were sworn into their new positions. Officer Joseph Cuccia and Officer Christopher King were both promoted to Sergeants, and Sgt. Jeffrey Schlegel and Sgt. Craig Stalker were both promoted to Lieutenants. We are very proud of these officers. Our PDD S.A.L.T. group, (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together), is stronger and more active than ever. In October, they visited the Emergency Operations building along with other police agencies to learn the latest on Hurricane preparedness. The group took a tour of the complex and even got to play weatherman behind the podium. The group meets once a month to discuss educational topics, and schedules field trips and social events. In November, Kathleen Andrews of the Plantation Police Department was presented with a check for $500 from The Plantation Women’s Club at the City Council Meeting. Andrews has been with the department for 18 years, and since 2002 she has been sending packages to the troops all over the world. She has partnered with many schools in the area, who collect items for the troops, such as snacks, personal toiletries, books and magazines. The schools also made Christmas stockings that were sent in December. The monies that Ms. Andrews received will go a long way to pay for the postage in sending these care packages. This year, among some of the worthy resolutions such as losing weight, getting healthy, and enjoying life, attempt to make crime prevention resolutions. Be alert and aware of your surroundings, assess your home, protect your identity, and do not text, drink and drive. The PPD wishes you a Happy New Year during which time you resolve to be alert, be secure, be informed, be a good neighbor and report any suspicious activity by calling the PPD at 954-797-2100. Safety First, Chief Harrison

IT’S THEIR BUSINESS
Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie
I
BY DEBBY TEICH
n early 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the onestory, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory
Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. Each level of the community will include a central core, known as the “Town Center,” flanked by four distinct “neighborhoods” that will serve as intimate living spaces. The Town Centers will feature a host of amenities, including a neighbor-
