Yes, Sunrise, There Really Is a Santa Claus! Sawgrass Mills Gives Back! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he holidays are typically supposed to be the happiest time of the year. However, for many it is a time of stress and hardship. The BatistaVentura family, originally from the Dominican Republic, have been negatively affected this past year. They were not exactly in the holiday spirit until Sawgrass Mills Mall selected them to be the recipients of a $1,000 shopping spree. Neighbors 4 Neighbors partnered with Broward County Public Schools to nominate families who deserved to be a part of Sawgrass Mills Mall holiday shopping spree. The Batista-Ventura was one of the three chosen. They were nominated by their social worker. Due to weather conditions and recent disasters, the Sunrise family of six, has been living in an apartment with severe mold. The unfortunate circumstance has severely affected the health of the children and grandparents. The children, 2 girls, 1 boy, and a baby have all developed some form of illness because of the mold. The first-grade Discovery Elementary student now has a pulmonary condition.
“We gifted each family a shopping spree of $1,000 to spend in any of the more than 350 stores at Sawgrass Mills. Under Armour, Factory House and Ron Jon Surf Shop also donated items to the families on their behalf. In addition, the families were also treated to a holiday lunch at matchbox American Kitchen + Spirit,” stated Chris Valle, Director of Marketing and Business Development, Sawgrass Mills. Upon finding out they received such a generous and unsuspecting gift, the family was delighted. The girls chose dolls and clothes and the 11-year-old boy chose shoes, clothes, and a bicycle. “It was a special Christmas Day for our family, full of good memories that we will cherish forever. This gift has brought our family hope and unity in love and gratitude to God all thanks to Neighbors for Neighbors and Sawgrass Mills,” exclaimed the family. “Thank you for your extreme generosity. We can only hope that Neighbors 4 Neighbors continues giving and
bringing happiness and goodness to other families in Florida!” “Here at Sawgrass Mills, we believe it is important to give back to our local community and to those in need. What better organization to partner with to provide this gift than Neighbors 4 Neighbors, who has been serving those in need in the South Florida area for 25 years,” added Valle. “The families that were gifted have gone through extreme hardships, and we were delighted to spread some holiday cheer and give them a treat they’ll never forget.”

There She Is…Miss Arc Broward 2018! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
t was an exciting night as participants and attendees anxiously awaited the crowning of the 2018 Miss Arc Broward winner. Families, friends and more than 700 community supporters came to celebrate twenty talented young women, ages 6-17 years old, with various developmental disabilities at the Fifth Annual Miss Arc Broward Pageant presented by Holland & Knight at the historic Parker Playhouse. The one-of-a-kind pageant was founded by Arc Broward, a nonprofit agency headquartered in Sunrise, that supports those with disabilities and other life challenges by encouraging and providing opportunities throughout Broward County. Events such as this one, give young girls the confidence and ability to showcase their talents during the personality round, to share their unique abilities in the interview round and to shine in the evening wear round. However, the real beauty of a pageant such as this is that no one leaves empty-handed, everyone is a winner. Publix Super Markets, Inc. Media and Community Relations Manager Nicole Krauss and NBC6 South Florida Morning Anchor Sheli Muñiz served as the event’s emcees and held an inspiring question and

Buon Appetito! Vivace Gourmet Pizza & Pasta Delivers a Taste of Italy to Plantation
E
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
veryone loves a neighborhood pizza restaurant, especially one that delivers. Unlike typical delivery of only pizza and pastas, Vivace Gourmet Pizza & Pasta delivers a whole lot more than a traditional pie and some noodles. From oven roasted Branzino to Bone in Rib Eye Steak, Italian specialties are brought fresh and hot right to the door. The trendy, family-owned, fullservice Italian restaurant is casual, yet sophisticated, and most definitely inviting. They have a unique one-ofa-kind concept featuring wines from around the globe, craft beers, and local produce. However, they are most proud of their “made from scratch” cooking technique, which has become a lost art in our modern-day times, as well as their hand tossed pizzas and true hospitable service. Vivace is a musical term meaning “lively, brisk, quick and bright”, and no doubt the owners reflect the meaning just as their restaurant does. Vito and Santina DiSalvo recently took the time to answer a few questions about their fine establishment. Tell us about Executive Chef Vito DiSalvo’s culinary background. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was first drawn to the culinary world through my upbringing in a traditional Italian home where the making of traditional Italian foods was a part of everyday life. At the young age of 10, I decided I would become a chef. I was fortunate to attend the prestigious Culinary Arts Institute of America in New York, and then complete a Bachelor Degree in Hospitality Management from Florida
International University in Miami by the age of 21. Where did you gain such experience? For three years I was employed by Chef Allen’s in Aventura. I then went on to be the Sous Chef at Mark’s South Beach where the restaurant was named #1 in Miami by Gourmet Magazine, best new restaurant by Bon Appetit, and one of the 50 best hotel restaurants by Conde Nast Traveler. However, the best experience I obtained was when I moved to Florence, Italy for 3 years. I had the opportunity to work at 3 Michelin
Enoteca Pinchiorri, one of the top 4 restaurants in the world. We heard you also had your own cooking show. Tell us more. Yes! I returned from Italy and starred and co-produced “La Dolce Vita”, a cooking and lifestyle show, which aired on NBC in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. I was fortunate to receive rave reviews from newspaper food critics during its two-year span in the tri-state area.
When did you open Vivace? Being a Plantation resident for the past ten years with my wife, Santina, we wanted to open a local eatery close to home where families can enjoy real Italian cuisine in a comfortable setting. So, 2 years ago we decided to do so. Our son, Vito Giuliano, is our inspiration for the restaurant and concept. What type of cuisine will diners find? We serve a variety of Italian and Mediterranean foods. Aside from pasta and gourmet pizza, we also offer steaks, seafood and chicken dishes alongside antipasti, insalate, and
homemade soups. Our menu also features hoagies, paninis, strombolis, and calzones. We certainly have something for everyone including a family style menu. It’s recommended to also save room for desserts, as we have authentic Italian specialties such as homemade tiramisu, gelato and cannoli, just to name a few. Do you have specialty dishes that you are known for? We always have guests coming back for Polenta Fries with Truffle Aioli, Oven Roasted Branzino, Italian Chopped Salad, Black & White Truffle Pizza, Bone in Rib Eye Steak, and the Dessert Calzone stuffed with Nutella & Mascarpone cheese. What can diners expect when they visit the restaurant? The restaurant’s warm inviting atmosphere is the perfect place for a quick bite, an intimate meal, or a fun meeting place to gather with friends and family. In addition to dining in, take-out, delivery, we also provide catering packages. Special private event services are also available. We have done
numerous off premise caterings for celebrities, dignitaries, and corporate functions, as well as weddings. How do customers place a delivery order? Well, besides calling our restaurant the traditional way, we accept online orders from our website, vivacepizza. com. We also launched a VIP Mobile Club. Text Vivace to 51660 and get a free dessert or glass of wine when signing up. Customers will receive exclusive offers to their phones. However, we still like to speak to customers the old-fashioned way, so call 954-440-2189 and we will deliver all menu items hot and fresh straight to your door. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you or your restaurant? We are a husband and wife team, and Plantation residents. Often nights you will find Santina, greeting customers at the restaurant with our two-yearold son, Vito, who has become quite the little foodie. When Santina is not at the restaurant, she is an active realtor with the Hopkins Team at Coldwell Banker in the community. We strive for our customers to feel like they are a part of our family when they are dining at Vivace. Buon Appetito! Vivace is located at 9763 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation, 33324. To place a delivery order, make a reservation, or inquire about catering and private events, please call 954-440-2189. To see the menu and learn more, please visit www.vivacepizza.com. Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! – Plantation Couple Bring in 15 Tons of Snow for Foster Children BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
t certainly was a Hannukah miracle that took place in South Florida last December. Children who live in the JAFCO Village along with those who have been adopted, or placed in foster care through JAFCO programs put on their warmest winter gear and mittens to play in the snow in the Sunshine State. This was part of the Jewish holiday celebration at the JAFCO Children’s Village in Sunrise. Longtime JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options) supporters Howard and Julie Talenfield once again sponsored the anticipated snow-filled event. The Plantation couple’s generous donation has become a holiday tradition that they have been carrying on for the past decade. Howard is a managing partner at Talenfeld Law and Julie is president of BoardroomPR in Fort Lauderdale They brought in 15 tons of snow, latkes, and more for the annual party. The eager children made snow balls, created snow angels, and were even able to slide down a snowy hill right in their backyard. The smiles were contagious and the joy instantaneous. Additionally, the traditional menorah lighting was done by JAFCO Director, Sarah Franco, and a gift table was available for children to choose something special. The Talenfelds have a reputation for giving back to the community and making an impact. The big-hearted couple sponsors the Chanukah party so that foster children who live in the residences at the Children’s Village and children who have been adopted through JAFCO can celebrate the holiday in a unique fashion. “There’s no better feeling than bringing smiles to children’s faces during the holiday season,” said Julie Talenfeld. “Chanukah was my favorite holiday as a child – and remains at the top, even today. My husband and I are proud to continue this tradition of the snow-filled party at the JAFCO Village.”

JAFCO was established in 1992 to provide services to abused and neglected children. In September 2014 JAFCO expanded its mission to include children with autism and other developmental disabilities with the opening of the JAFCO Children’s Ability Center, a family enrichment, resource and respite center for families raising a child (ages 0-22) with a developmental disability. The center is in Sunrise and is the only center of its kind in the country offering families intensive support, case management services and overnight and extended out-of-home respite care all under one roof.

Back to School and Back to Life – Plantation Resident Graduates from Broward College BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
t was not too long ago that Travis Donnell was unsure of what his future would hold. For 25 years, the Plantation resident worked in the hospitality industry as a food and beverage manager. Many know that a career of this nature often comes with long hours, a hectic lifestyle, and much physical work. Although he enjoyed it, he did not think he could do possibly do anything else without a college degree. Donnell was soon hired as a food and beverage manager at the Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood President Armstrong (l) and Travis Donnell (r) International Airport, and three months into his new position he began to get ill. After visiting the emergency room, and assuming it was the flu, Donnell learned otherwise. A series of tests and results showed that this hard-working individual had leukemia. The next six months started with a 31-day stay at Memorial West Hospital, and then recurring stays for rounds of chemo. During this life-threatening time, Donnell realized he wanted more from life. So, once he was in remission the 45-year-old decided it was time to go back to school. He quickly enrolled at

Broward College in the accelerated Bachelors of Applied Science in Supply Chain Management. “I wanted to develop more, learn more, and do more. I wasn’t done yet,” exclaimed Donnell. “It certainly wasn’t easy being out of school for 20 years, and adjusting to life as a student, but I chose to work hard, apply myself, and focus. If it weren’t for my classmates’ support, I don’t think I would have graduated.” Once Donnell passed the milestone of earning an associate degree, he was hired by Hydraulic Supply Company at its Sunrise distribution center. Being in the Broward College program was a selling point for his new employers, and they encouraged his studies. On December 14th, 2017, Donnell was one of the recipients of more than 5,588 degrees and certificates presented during Broward College’s 86th commencement ceremony at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. He is truly a testament that it’s never too late for a fresh start, and that a positive attitude can get anyone whatever they desire.
Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie
I
n July 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create
an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. What is “The Artis Way? ” We follow what we call “The Artis Way.” Each letter of the word Artis stands for a tenet of the organization.
▸ “A” is the ability to have a voice. We want residents and their families to engage in open communication with our associates to make sure that what we’re doing is the right fit for them.
▸ “R” is about respecting and maintaining relationships. ▸ “T” stands for treasuring each person’s uniqueness. ▸ “I” is for integrity. We promote dignity and respect. ▸ “S” is for success and recognition.
How many people are affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia? Every 67 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. By 2025, the number of people ages 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million. Dementia is becoming more and more of an epidemic. Therefore, the more quality care we can offer, the more fulfilling the lives of those with dementia can lead.

Dementia: More Than Just Memory BY MARY UNDERWOOD, VP MEMORY CARE SERVICES
W
hen people hear Alzheimer’s, they usually think about memory. Does the person remember her family? Does he remember where he lives? But Alzheimer’s disease, as well as other forms of dementia, impact more than memory. Because Alzheimer’s is a disease of the brain, there are many other aspects of a person’s life that are affected. A person with dementia often losses the ability to recognize objects, faces, sounds, colors, and/or smells. This is known as agnosia. The damage in certain parts of the brain because of dementia is the cause of this. A person with dementia does not necessarily forget what a cup is. But instead, the eyes see the cup but the brain cannot process that it is a cup. A mom could tell you her daughter’s name and describe what she looks like. But when she sees her, the brain is unable to process recognition. A dad could hear the phone ring, but interprets it as a siren. Communication is also a common aspect of life that is impaired because of dementia. This loss of ability to understand or express speech is called aphasia. Not being able to call a fork a fork is not necessarily because the person forgot that it is a fork. The person may see it as a fork and know what it is used for, but the brain is unable to formulate the right word. Other signs of aphasia include substituting the intended word with another word, using made up words, and having difficulty putting words together. Aphasia does not only affect how the person expresses himself, but also in the ability to understand written and/or verbal communication from others. It is not uncommon for a person to lose the ability to read. Even when they are able to grammatically read the word, there may not be comprehension of what was read. Also, understanding what others are saying or asking could be difficult. This is especially true when there is too much information provided at once or when there are too many outside distractions. There are also changes and deficits in physical ability due to dementia. Completing physical tasks due to a disconnect in the brain is known as apraxia. This can be seen in everyday tasks, such as dressing, brushing one’s teeth, and even walking. The person could feel the button of his shirt and have the dexterity in his fingers to button the shirt. But the message the brain is sending is disconnected from the rest of the body. When you ask the person to stand up, he may understand you and have the physical capabilities, but his brain is unable to send the messages needed to make the movements happen. Caregivers sometimes interpret this as the person being stubborn or resistant. Unfortunately, agnosia, apraxia, and aphasia can all be impacting the person at the same time at varying levels. It is important to understand that an impairment in one area does not necessarily mean the same level of impairments in others. These areas are all separate from the person’s memory issues related to dementia. Artis Senior Living of Davie is a new Memory Care Assisted Living located at 2794 South Flamingo Road in Davie. MESSAGE FROM FIRE CHIEF
Tis’ the Season BY E. LANEY STEARNS, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF

“Your Smile Our Passion”
hen people ask if we miss the change of seasons living in Florida I often tell them that we also have four seasons; Summer, December, January, and February. And while we may avoid the grips of the bitter cold like the rest of the upper 47, it can still get chilly down here. (At least by our terms.) But the one season we are not exempt from, even living in paradise, is “flu season”. Flu season usually begins around November or December and peaks in February and March. Influenza is no joke. The flu can be very debilitating and even deadly, especially among the elderly, and very young. So, while the weather may be warming up, here’s a few tips to help keep you and your loved ones healthy during flu season:

▸▸ Cover your cough - Influenza is an airborne virus and spreads through coughing and sneezing. By placing your hand or forearm over your mouth when you cough, you keep most of the germs from going into the air. ▸▸ Do the vampire sneeze - Instead of placing your hand over your nose, sneeze into your elbow. Sneezing into your hand causes germs get on your palm, which then touch the environment around you. The flu virus can live on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours. If you touch someone else, like shaking hands, you have potentially spread the virus directly to them. ▸▸ Wash your hands - The most effective method of reducing the spread of germs is to wash your hands. It’s simple, quick, and can make a big difference in reducing the spread of the flu virus. Remember to use soap and warm water. ▸▸ Get a Flu shot - Flu vaccines are readily available through your physician’s office or local pharmacy. They are inexpensive and very effective. There are a hypoallergenic variety, and even one you can take through your nose, so you don’t have to get a needle in the arm. Reducing the spread of the flu, especially during the height of flu season is a community-wide responsibility. If we all do our part we can help make our community healthier, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone. Stay well! Well-Woman Visits BY JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
T
his time of year, everyone is still trying hard to keep those new year resolutions. Usually on the list with eating healthier and exercising more, is “taking better care of oneself”. To do so, it’s important to schedule annual check-ups with your physician. Just like taking a car in for service, females need to not just get a physical, but a well-woman check-up as well. A well-woman check-up (also known as a gynecological exam) is all about you, your body, and your reproductive health. From pap smears to bone-mass measurements and prenatal care, the yearly physical helps identify any serious health concerns before they become life threatening. For those that go several years between exams run the risk of a health problem going undetected. The actual type of exam depends upon a few things such as age, sexual history, and medical history.
Visits may start as young as 13-years-old where a teen can get a basic physical including her height, weight, and blood pressure checked. A discussion about the regularity of the menstrual cycle and the symptoms that come with it are often a primary topic. Also, those under 18 will learn about the HPV vaccine with a parent/guardian and determine if it’s right for them. For those sexually active, birth control counseling, and STD testing may need to be a part of the conversation. Usually at the age of 21 is when regular pelvic exams, pap tests, and breast examinations begin. These screenings check for early signs of breast and cervical cancer. Mammograms are recommended later on around the age of 40 depending on family history and any other possible health risks. The patient should be prepared to talk about health history, allergies, illnesses, infections, surgeries, alcohol and drug use, and any other issues happening with your body or otherwise. However, not only will the patient answer questions, the patient will have the opportunity to ask questions just the same. No topic should be off-limits when regarding one’s health. All these things can affect one’s reproductive, emotional, physical, and mental health. Regardless of age, a good, honest relationship with your doctor or nurse is crucial to receiving the best possible care. Typically, a well-woman visit is covered 100% by insurance if using a network provider, so there is no excuse to not keeping the resolution of staying healthy and taking care of oneself. Dr. Jay Cohen specializes in Obstetrics & Gynecology and is affiliated with Plantation General Hospital. He received his medical degree from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and has been in practice for more than 20 years. During Thanksgiving Andi and Evan Saifman traveled to northern California. One of the highlights they visited was the notorious prison known as Alcatraz on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. Although they loved their adventure on the west coast, and may have even left their hearts in San Francisco, they took a souvenir photo with Our City Plantation at the National Historic Landmark because there’s no place like home.
