Happy Valentine’s Day!
M
any of us will be purchasing our chocolates and flowers for our sweethearts, or writing our dearest a love letter or two, on February 14th. Valentine’s Day has evolved from a somber Christian day of remembrance into a day for all of us to celebrate those we love most. Be sure to look for some great Valentine’s Day gift ideas and deals in this month’s Our City. Here are a few fun facts you may not have known about Valentine’s Day: ▸▸ About 1 in 30 pet owners purchase a Valentine’s Day present for their pet. ▸▸ Much like kids at school, in Victorian times Valentine’s Day cards were sent anonymously. ▸▸ Over 800 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year and almost all of those cards are purchased within a week of February 14th. ▸▸ In 1573, Britain’s King Henry VII declared February 14th Valentines Day (unfortunately his son wasn’t a very good Valentine). ▸▸ Americans buy more than 30 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate each year. ▸▸ Almost 200 million roses are expected to be purchased on Valentine’s Day this year. So, this February 14th, when you give your most cherished loved one that something special, you will know the rest of the story. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Take Note: Rock the Park Rocks! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he City of Plantation is always focused on being a premier city and community for families. With plenty of beautiful parks and world-class recreational facilities, shopping, business districts, and proximity to many of South Florida’s favorite attractions, it’s no wonder many call it home. The City has presented numerous art festivals, farmer’ markets, safety fairs, and many other activities that the entire family can enjoy without breaking the bank. And just last November, the Parks and Recreation Department created a new event happening on the first Friday of each month which will run through April providing residents another great family activity. “Rock the Park”, a free concert series at Plantation Central Park, promises a fun South Florida evening under the stars. The series kicked off with The Motowners, a Motown tribute band followed by The Caribbean Chillers, a tribute to Jimmy Buffet, and then last month with Turnstiles, a tribute to legendary “Piano Man” Billy Joel. “The concerts came about because we had a new director that loved music and wanted to see Plantation have a concert series of our own,” exclaimed
Shannon Ryan, City of Plantation Superintendent of Administration and Special Events. “Wes Lockard, Special Events Coordinator at the Plantation Parks and Recreation Department, and I started looking for bands that we thought would appeal to our residents and we were able to book a really exciting line-up for our first year.” This month the City welcomes a hometown favorite; The Shane Duncan Band will take the stage on February 1st. The 5-piece Country-Rock band will deliver a high-energy show featuring their signature sound. Band members Dave Scully, Tiffany Rosario, Shane Duncan, Paul Romanelli & Motley Rodriguez all hail from the surrounding area, so their fan following will be notable. “We had about 400 people attend The Caribbean Chillers, and each show has been gaining a larger
audience,” added Ryan. Attendees should plan on bringing lawn chairs and blankets as well as an appetite for great music and great food. A variety of food trucks will be on-site providing plenty of dinner and dessert items. The young ones can run around the ball fields since there is sufficient space at the family-friendly event. Next on the schedule are Brass Evolution featuring Classic Rock with Horns section on March 1st and Classic Rock band, Mr. Nice Guy on April 5th. Plantation Central Park is located at 600 Central Park Drive, Plantation, 33324. Food trucks open at 6:00 pm and concerts start at 7:00 pm.

Second Chances - Dreams Do Come True! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or most students attending college is the natural procession after graduating high school, but for many, it’s not. Plantation resident, Kari Castenada started her higher education journey just a little over 10 years ago when she graduated from Cooper City High School. After changing majors, multiple times, the frustrated student decided to throw in the towel and return to her home in South Florida where she registered at Broward College. Finally, after a lengthy four years, the dedicated student completed her
Associate of Arts degree. Although she maintained a good job she loved and had supportive parents, she knew she disappointed her father. Despite the fact that he graduated from college with an associate degree, he believed she had more potential and his dream was for his daughter to achieve more than he did. Last January, Kari decided to go back to school to finish her bachelor’s degree. She approached her mom with the idea and they decided not to tell her dad as he had been disappointed each time she would enroll and then stop. After several months

of intense studying and arduous work, on December 13th, three days before her 30th birthday, Kari completed her degree with a major in Management and Supervision with a specialization in Human Resources. The accomplished Human Resources Assistant and her mother devised a plan to surprise her father. They created a mini scavenger hunt where they hid notes around the house with the final one taped to the front door directing him to open it at 7:30 am. After following all the detailed instructions, Timothy Stewart opened the door to see his daughter standing before him in a cap and gown. The surprised look turned into tears of joy when he realized his daughter finally accomplished one of the biggest dreams, he had for her. His daughter was a college graduate! “Seeing my dad’s reaction means everything to me,” said Kari. “If you persevere, you can accomplish anything you put your mind to.”
“This is a day that will never fade from my memory. I’m over-the-moonproud of my daughter,” exclaimed proud papa Stewart. “To do this for me as a surprise is unexpected and way too incredible to explain. I feel much more successful as a father and a family man now. I know she will go on to be a wonderful professional in this world.”

One Night Out Can Make a Difference BY BEVERLY PERKINS
C
ovenant House Florida’s recent “Sleep Out 2018” raised more than $210,000. The annual nationwide initiative takes place primarily on the same night across the United States and Canada at Covenant House shelters. The event was created to increase awareness and advocate for homeless youth while raising funds for the non-profit organization. Last December, community leaders spent the night at Huizenga Park to be in solidarity with more than 7,000 children in Florida who are without safe shelter each night. One of these leaders was Plantation resident Scott Aaron. The dedicated advocate from the Cisco team raised $6,025 for Covenant
House Florida. The local facility provides shelter and services to homeless, runaway, at-risk, and trafficked youth and young adults under the age of 21, including moms and their babies, as well as hope for safety and a better future. “I have accepted Covenant House’s challenge to spend a night sleeping on the street so homeless kids don’t have to,” explained Aaron. “The Sleep Out is not about pretending to be homeless. It’s an act of solidarity with 4.2 million young people who experience homelessness each year. It’s a decision that we can’t stay indoors while so many kids remain outside.” The evening began with the “sleepers” sharing dinner with Covenant House Florida residents at The Old River House Restaurant. They had a moving discussion with the young people before embarking on their night sleeping on the ground wrapped in a sleeping bag and sheltered by a cardboard box at Esplanade Park. “We are incredibly grateful to all of our ‘sleepers’ who came out in support of Covenant House Florida and braved a night on the streets to raise awareness for Cisco Was the Top Fundraising Team at the 2018 Covenant homeless youth and the many adversities House Florida Sleep Out, Raising More than $48,500 they face, weather being just one of them,”

said Michael Long, CEO of Covenant House Florida. Prior to the event, each participant raised funds in support of their sleep out effort by reaching out to family, friends, and colleagues with the goal of raising a minimum of $1,000 per person. “This is an experience you will never forget and to sleep out and see the impact you are making to these children is life changing. This will be my fourth year and I love to see a ton of support from my Cisco family where we raised $47,815. Covenant House welcomes each kid with absolute respect and unconditional love, and their continuum of care provides essential services to help kids transition from homelessness to independence,” added Aaron. With facilities in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Covenant House Florida is one of the largest providers of services for homeless youth in the state, having served more than 37,000 young people since opening its doors in 1985. Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. The community is strategically located at 2794 S. Flamingo Road, so it is easily accessible from Florida’s Turnpike, I-595, and I-75. Amy DePreker, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, answered some questions about the new Memory Care Assisted Living Community. Describe the community. The community will be comprised of four neighborhoods designed to create
an intimate environment with familiar living spaces. The central core, known as the “Town Center,” will feature a host of amenities, including a neighborhood center for community gatherings and a studio for activities, as well as a health center, beauty and barber shop. How do you tailor each person’s living experience? Artis Senior Living of Davie strives to make sure that its residents and their families have a say in how they live. Our philosophy centers around empowerment, pride and fulfillment for all our residents. Instead of a one-size-fits-all philosophy, the experience is tailored specifically to each person to ensure independence, dignity and quality of life. What is “The Artis Way? ” We follow what we call “The Artis Way.” Each letter of the word Artis stands for a tenet of the organization.
▸ “A” is the ability to have a voice. We want residents and their families to engage in open communication with our associates to make sure that what we’re doing is the right fit for them.
▸ “R” is about respecting and maintaining relationships. ▸ “T” stands for treasuring each person’s uniqueness. ▸ “I” is for integrity. We promote dignity and respect. ▸ “S” is for success and recognition.
How many people are aff ected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia? Every 67 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. By 2025, the number of people ages 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million. Dementia is becoming more and more of an epidemic. Therefore, the more quality care we can offer, the more fulfilling the lives of those with dementia can lead.

What’s Hot in Décor for 2019? BY FARYAL ALI – HEAD DESIGNER AT BEAUTIFUL WINDOWS
Clean Lines & Neutral Tones Minimal Fuss Focus on Functionality Technology Driven Blinds & Shades Voice Command Shades WALL COLORS: Popular are soft shades of grey and beige, and tints of whites which are neutral backdrops for the other decorative layers. FLOORS: Harsh dark colors are giving way to lighter floor colors. Lots of whites, marbles with grey striations, and wood floors or porcelain tiles with a soft wood grain look are trending. RUGS: The traditional patterned rug with medallions is not as popular as the flowy intermixed soft lines pattern. Faux bois (false wood) is hot. MOTORIZED & VOICE COMMAND BLINDS: Clients want their windows to function around their lifestyle and want the convenience of controlling their shades from outside of their homes. This can be done from a smart device and hooked up to Amazon’s ALEXA. It’s a good security measure too.

► ROOM DARKENING SHADES: Clients want true room darkening with zero light. Shades with extra room darkening layers and side channels to block out all light are now available. ► HUNTER DOUGLAS BLINDS: Modern colors, rich texture and designs to suit any décor from traditional to contemporary such as Roller Shades, Roman Shades and Silhouettes are HOT in 2019. Plus, they all come with a lifetime warranty. ► DRAPERY: All the fuss of swags and yards of layered fabric are out, and simple clean lines are in. Functional ripplefold styled drapes are the rave now. When possible, go ceiling to floor for a dramatic effect. Adding a second layer of lining for maximum sound absorption keeps a room truly quiet and condu- cive to peaceful rest. ► FABRICS: Wild patterns are out. Geometrics in color-on-color are in. Colors are soft tones or everything under the sun. Plain fabrics with patterns that reflect nature like faux bois or a marble grain are also popular. High thread- count and high-performance fabrics for upholstery like Krypton are growing exponentially. Over the past 27 years, I have enjoyed transforming old rooms into beautiful, functional spaces that renew a client’s love for their home. Happy Decorating!

We can’t imagine the size of his siblings as Shaker grew to over 100 lbs! He’s a senior now at 12 years old and he still chases a tennis ball with as much enthusiasm as ever. He just can’t help himself. We joke that his “retriever retired” because these days, after he chases the ball, he doesn’t bring it back. He dislikes going out in the rain, but he loves to splash through the puddles afterward. It’s hard to know who his favorite person is, he’s never told us. He really loves kids so our guess is Ian, our nephew, is his favorite. They were babies together! Shaker loves to squeeze himself into tight spaces and was last seen in the narrow space between the couch and the coffee table.

ASK THE EXPERT
Hazards of High Heels BY DR. JOHN GOODNER
M
any women are in love with their high heels, so much that even though 71% of women complain that their feet hurt in high heels, they continue to wear them on a daily basis. The higher and thinner the heel, the more damage is being done to the foot and ankle. Simply speaking, wearing high heels too often and too long will create long term issues and injury. The impact of wearing heels goes way beyond foot pain; the entire body’s weight distribution is shifted forward, and this misalignment can lead to ankle, knee, hip, and back injuries. Many women can prevent irreversible damage to the foot and ankle by making smarter decisions when choosing high heels. What type of heels should I avoid? It is recommended to avoid heels with a pointy, closed toe, or any heel with a crowded toe box. Avoid any heels that require “breaking in”, there should not be excessive wear on your heels or soles. High stilettos should be avoided due to the excessive forefoot pressure and ankle instability creating a higher injury risk. How do I prevent injury? Make smarter shoe decisions by choosing heels with
cushioning at the front of the shoe, a toe box with adequate space, and a heel height of two inches or less, preferably a wedge to promote lifting of the arch. It is recommended to alternate between types of shoes, even during the work day; do not wear the same pair of painful heels every day, your feet need rest. Ice and stretch the Achilles tendon to avoid issues related to contracture. Many shoe companies are incorporating shock absorbing foot beds, arch support, and better weight distribution. You should see a foot and ankle specialist if you: ▸▸ have pain in the back of the leg. The calf and Achilles tendon contract, shorten and tighten with frequent usage of high heels. Inflammation or tendonitis may require immobilization in a walking boot, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory treatment. ▸▸ have pain in the back of the heel. The presence of a “pump bump” or Haglund’s deformity, a bony enlargement on the back of the heel, leads to frequent irritation from the straps and rigid backs seen with most high heels. Depending on the severity, frequency, and failure of conservative care; surgery is often indicated to alleviate pain. ▸▸ have pain in ball of the foot. In addition to the Achille contracture causing excessive forefoot pressure, the high heel places the body forward leading to metatarsalgia and nerve compression resulting in numbness or tingling to the toes.
▸▸ have pain in the big toe joint. Frequently, women with bunions are unable to wear high heels due to the exacerbation of the arthritic condition. Age increases susceptibility, often requiring surgical correction if shoe modification and conservative care fails. ▸▸ had a recent ankle sprain. High heels dramatically affect your balance, increasing the chance of ankle injuries. After an ankle sprain, it is recommended to get an x-ray to rule out fracture if unable to put weight on injured foot. Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults. HEALTH & WELLNESS
Protect Your Heart BY DR. ARNOLDO GHITIS, M.D. INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST lipping your arm into a cuff to get your blood pressure checked has probably been a routine part of your doctor visit since you were young. But what do you really know about blood pressure and how it affects your heart health? With each heartbeat, your heart pumps blood through your arteries to deliver blood to the many areas where your body needs it most. When your nurse or doctor checks your blood pressure, he or she is obtaining a measurement of how forceful your blood pushes against your arteries when your heart pumps blood. When measuring blood pressure, there are two important numbers to keep in mind: ▸▸ The first number records the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats ▸▸ The second number refers to the pressure in your arteries when your heart is relaxed, or the time between each heartbeat. These two numbers are then recorded as a ratio (pressure in arteries during heartbeats/pressure in arteries during heart rest) to give you your blood pressure. A normal blood pressure remains lower than 120 over 80 (120/80), whereas a high blood pressure is 140/90 or higher. High blood pressure is also known as hypertension, and it affects one in three Americans. With no signs or symptoms, checking your blood pressure regularly is the best way to watch for hypertension. You may be at risk for high blood pressure if you: ▸▸ Are overweight or obese ▸▸ Smoke ▸▸ Have a family history of hypertension ▸▸ Regularly consume foods high in salt ▸▸ Exercise or incorporate less than 30 minutes of activity each day ▸▸ Consume more than the moderate amount of alcohol each day (two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women) Keeping your blood pressure at a healthy level by lowering your intake of foods high in sodium and saturated fat, increasing your physical activity to two and a half hours per week and even losing weight can significantly contribute to your overall health and longevity and even reduce your risk of heart disease, kidney failure and stroke. So, start getting your blood pressure checked regularly – knowing your numbers is the first step in preventing hypertension.

Heart health: Important questions to ask your doctor. Your heart is like the engine in your car. It’s the main component that makes everything run. And just like your car requires maintenance to keep things running smoothly, your heart needs care on a regular basis too. “The center of the cardiovascular system is the Robert Cubeddu, MD heart, It’s responsible for your vitality,” says Robert Cubeddu, MD, Chairman of the Tomsich Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida. Taking care of your heart is essential for a long life. Heart disease is the number one killer of adults in the United States. Some heart issues are genetic and others are caused by personal choices. Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist Diego Sadler, MD explains, “Not only is it important for patients to listen to their doctor, it’s also important for them to ask their physician the right questions.” Drs. Cubeddu and Sadler provide general Diego Sadler, MD answers to these important questions about heart health. However, your doctor knows you best and can provide personalized answers to help ensure that you understand how to take proper care of your heart. Will blood tests and other screenings tell me if my heart is healthy? Knowing your BMI, cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels will give you a clearer picture of your cardiovascular strengths or risks. “These numbers can be indicators for issues that can lead to cardiovascular problems,” says Dr. Sadler.
Does my family medical history put me at a greater risk for heart disease? Anyone can be at risk, but a family history of heart issues – such as heart attack and heart disease – can mean you have increased risk for developing heart problems. If this is the case, healthy behaviors may be even more important for you. Will smoking increase my chances of having heart disease? Individuals who smoke are more likely to experience heart attacks than non-smokers. “The sooner you quit the better,” advises Dr. Cubeddu. Are diet and exercise important for keeping my heart in tip-top shape? A healthy diet and exercise are some of the best tools you can use to keep your heart healthy. At least 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week, is recommended. Eat foods that are low in fat, salt and calories. Include fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, lean proteins and nuts. “Having an open dialogue with your physician and asking questions are the best ways for you to learn about what to do before cardiovascular issues arise,” says Dr. Cubeddu. To learn more about what you can do to keep your heart healthy, visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Heart.
