We Are All Eagles Now
F
ebruary 14, 2018, is a date that will forever be etched in all our minds, just like 9-11. It is virtually impossible to come across a person in the community who wasn’t personally impacted by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Seventeen innocent people – 14 students along with three faculty members – lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. Fifteen additional people were wounded. It is hard for anyone to reconcile what happened with any sense of normalcy or justice. There are many questions still unanswered: How could someone become filled with such hate and rage? Why do we allow teenagers to easily purchase assault weapons? How can we keep our children safe? What keeps us going, however, is what we’ve heard from the friends and family of the victims: we, as a community, are better off having known them. They were coaches who rushed to the aid of defenseless students; seniors with aspirations for higher education; freshman just beginning to discover who they are; athletes; band members; and, most importantly, they were fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and friends. As we slowly start to piece together our new normal, let us never forget the 17 innocent lives lost, along with the thousands of survivors who will forever bear both physical and emotional scars from that fateful day. In the hours and days following the attack, our community rallied together. Now that the days have turned to weeks, we must continue to band together and show our support to the Parkland community. The Eagles will soar once more. Sincerely,
Terry and Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

inally, spring is in the air! Nothing announces the season better than the annual Garden Fest Plant Extravaganza. The major plant festival in Plantation is sponsored by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Plantation Woman’s Club. Now in its 7th year, the anticipated festival will attract approximately 3,000-4,000 people during the two-day event at Plantation’s Volunteer Park Community Center. This year’s dates are March 17th and 18th. Saturday hours are 9:00am5:00pm and Sunday hours are 9:00am-4:00pm. As always, admission and parking are free. Attendees can expect to see hundreds of orchid varieties, cacti, bonsai, bromeliads, butterfly friendly and Florida friendly plants, outdoor garden art, orchid supplies, driftwood, and so much more. For those without a “green thumb”, items such as
organic honey, hand-made plant soaps, plant photography, stationery, wind chimes, unique pottery, wood creations, and metal sculptures will be available. Gardening gurus can purchase all garden-related items to enhance their existing green spaces or to create a new one. Master gardeners will be on-site to answer gardening questions and provide helpful plant information. These “green thumb” gurus volunteer as part of their community service. Other participants are Wildlife Federation members, the Ft. Lauderdale Bee Association, the Rare Fruit Society, and the Bromeliad Society of the Palm Beaches. Also, on the schedule is live music and plenty of food. Homemade treats, as well as specialty desserts created by the Plantation Woman’s Club members will be for sale. Proceeds will support the Club’s many charitable venues which include college and university scholarships. In years past, the Plantation Woman’s Club sponsored much smaller plant and crafts sales. However, First Vice-President Colleen Hendrix revived the tradition with the start of “Garden Fest”, a much larger, and more comprehensive event encompassing the entire garden experience.
“I love this event, as gardening is one of my hobbies. The scope of vendors is always outstanding, especially the unusual and original art sculptures for the garden,” says GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club President, Helen Ackerman. “This year will feature more specialized plant varieties such as African violets that will thrive in Florida.” Garden Fest is Saturday, March 17th, 9-5 and Sunday, March18th, 9-4. Free admission and parking. Volunteer Park is located at 12050 West Sunrise Boulevard in Plantation. For more information call Colleen at 954-530-0076 or visit the Club’s website at FWCPlantationwomansclub.com

pringtime, a time of rebirth, rejuvenation, regrowth, and renewal, is here along with its signature holiday. Fortunately, during this time South Floridians do not have to put away their winter coats and boots since sunshine is apparent all year round. However, spring traditions are still enjoyed. One symbol of the season is the egg, and most notably a decorated one for the holiday of Easter. Decorating eggs dates back centuries ago, along with the story of an egg-laying hare. Modern traditions have been added throughout the years including Easter parades, bonnets, and plenty of candy. But the most anticipated event is the traditional egg hunt. Young children love the game of collecting the most

plastic eggs which often contain tiny prizes. Many communities have organized hunts for the little ones to participate in including Plantation and Sunrise. For years, the GFWC Plantation Women’s Club and the City of Plantation Parks & Recreation Department invites everyone to bring a basket and celebrate the start of the holiday at their annual “Royal Egg Hunt” at Pop Traver’s Field, 6250 SW 16th Street, Plantation. Children ages 3-10 are divided by age groups and assigned an age-appropriate field to collect eggs. The event starts promptly at 10:00am, rain or shine on Saturday, March 31st. A raffle prize drawing will be held at the conclusion of the hunt. “The Royal Easter Egg Hunt is a fun physical activity for kids of all ages and children can simply have a good time,” says Helen Ackerman, GFWC Plantation
Women’s Club President. Another popular “Royal Egg Hunt” is at the Sunrise Athletic Complex, 11501 NW 44th Street, Sunrise on Sunday, March 25th from 10:00am1:00pm. Young ones to age 12 are invited to bring a basket and come dressed as their favorite prince or princess to hop upon a magical egg-finding quest. Children will also be divided according to their age groups. (Walkers to age 3: 10:30am, Ages 4-6: 11:00am, Ages 7-9: 11:30am, Ages 10-12: 11:45am) Admission is $5, and also includes a visit from King Bunny, face painting, arts & crafts, rides, and more. It’s encouraged to bring a camera to the Memorial Health System sponsored event. FEATURE STORY
Raising the Roof – For Decades Roof Treatment, Inc. Has Raised the Bar in Roof Cleaning BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or over 25 years, Roof Treatment Inc. has raised the bar on keeping roofs clean. Years of working with communities, contractors, roofing manufacturers, and the EPA has allowed the South Florida company to research and develop the safest and most cost-effective solutions to common roof problems such as stains and the need for repeated cleanings. The structural/cosmetic integrity of a roof needs to be a top priority for homeowners. Without proper maintenance, the entire home is at risk for damage. Tropical weather conditions, especially here in South Florida, promote accelerated mold growth, which besides being unsightly if left unchecked may pose potential health problems. The expert roof cleaners have the ONLY roof cleaning and stain prevention product that is EPA approved as well as the ONLY one approved by EVERY major roof manufacturer. RoofA-Cide ® actually PREVENTS unsightly roof stains for years with each treatment. It is guaranteed and effective on materials such as: asphalt shingles, concrete tiles, clay tiles, stone-coated metal and slate. Choosing a qualified company is always challenging, but the following information will help homeowners determine what works best for their type of roof and assist in separating those “here today-gone tomorrow” operations from the professional and
highly reputable companies. Identify Your Roof Type. This is the first and most important step to take. Do not assume cleaning companies will do this for you. A properly maintained roof should last 25 – 30 years. This is quite a lengthy “relationship” and knowing how to properly care for your home’s roof will help you maintain the warranties and save you the added expense and headache of prematurely replacing the roof do to negligence/damage. Common roof materials are asphalt shingle, clay, concrete tile, and stone coat steel. Check with the manufacturer recommendations to ensure that the proposed cleaning methods will not void your manufacture warranty. When Evaluating A Roof Cleaning Service, Be Aware of the Following: Chlorine Bleach. Chlorine based cleaning methods may be an option, but you need to know some key facts. Strong chlorine solutions damage the roof, corrode metal flashings, and compromise integrity of the underlayment by drying out the oils that give your underlayment its waterproof protectant barrier. This may void workmanship warranties, which leaves the homeowner responsible for costly repairs. Manufacturers typically recommend using household bleach, which is 6-10% active or highly diluted Chlorine. Chlorine is 100% active and also leaves behind a salt residue, which feeds and accelerates future mold growth.
The Oak Ridge community roof “before” using Roof-A-Cide.
The Oak Ridge Community roof “after” the Roof-A-Cide application.
Regardless of the detergent/cleaning agent used, it must be thoroughly rinsed off afterwards. This avoids leaving any residue or potential penetration of underlayment. Pressure Cleaning. Certain roof surfaces, such as tile and concrete roof structures can tolerate pressure cleaning. However, pressure cleaning is not a long-term solution to keeping your roof clean. Experienced and knowledgeable cleaning service is imperative. Improper foot traffic and poor equipment calibration can wreak havoc on your roof. Some companies will use chlorine to cut labor time and cost. Be sure that in addition to choosing a company that specializes in roof cleaning, ask, what, if any, cleaning agents they intend to use on your roof. **Be advised: Stone Coat Steel and Asphalt Shingle structures should NEVER be pressure cleaned. Algaecides/Preventative Products. Mold preventative products are an excellent follow up to a roof cleaning. While filtering through options ask these following questions: Is the product endorsed by roofing manufacturers? Are you being offered a warranty on the product’s effectiveness against mold/mildew? If so, get it in writing, and read the fine print! Learn what is covered, which company is covering it, and what recourse you may have in the event that you need to call on it. The warranty is also only good if the company who issued it is in business. Be aware of newly established companies as well. You can verify businesses on www. Sunbiz.org. Also, have the contractor explain how the product works, to ensure that you are not being sold a roof cleaning agent posing as a
mold preventative product. One particular product that is dominating the South Florida market for over 20 years is Roof-A-Cide ®. Roof-ACide ® is a copper based, EPA approved mold preventative product offering a Two Year written warranty. Applicators using this product must be trained and authorized by the manufacture. Warranties are backed by the product manufacture as well as the Applicator that applied it. Experience & Qualifications. Roof cleaning doesn’t require a significant outlay of cash for equipment. Smaller pressure washing, painting, and window cleaning contractors are adding roof cleaning to their menu of services without having real experience and knowledge of basic roofing structure. Using due care is extremely important, and the ideal roof cleaning service should be knowledgeable about roof cleaning and stain prevention. If you’re considering having your roof cleaned, do some basic research to ensure that your chosen contractor is licensed, insured, and qualified to work on your roof. Check with your roofers and neighbors for recommendations. Word of mouth is the most honest form of advertisement. Roof Treatment Inc., located in Broward County, offers cleaning methods for most roof surfaces. They are an authorized Roof-A-Cide ® applicator family owned company with 15+ years of experience in roof cleaning and stain prevention. n For more information, you can call Roof Treatment Inc. at 954-275-1831 or visit them at 2045 SW 127th Avenue in Davie. Learn About Plantation’s Best in Blue at the Citizens Police Academy BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or the past 23 years, the Plantation Police Department (PPD) has been offering a Citizen Police Academy. The free 9-week course gives those interested a behind-the-scenes look at how the department operates and creates a partnership between the public and the police department. The course is open to adults and children over 13 years of age who live, work, or have an affiliation with the City of Plantation. The concept started 41 years ago in the United Kingdom. Citizens who were anxious to learn about police functions, operations, and the organization of the police system in England were invited to attend a police night school. The response was so overwhelming that it became a permanent part of the police public relations program. Almost a decade later the Orlando, Florida Police Department adopted the concept and created the first Citizens Police Department
in the United States. The goal of the program is to form a stronger citizen commitment which reduces crime in the communities. Classes are scheduled every Monday beginning on April 23rd and running through June 25th, 2018 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Plantation Police Department, 451 NW 70th Terrace, Plantation. Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion. Those that attend will be exposed to many every day examples of what police officers do in the community. The course includes a K-9 demonstration at the PPD’s private dog park, firearms safety, a tour of the range, information on the Explorer program, gangs and organized crime, and crime scene investigation and forensics. There will be participation in a D.U.I. scenario, a viewing of a robbery scenario, processing a crime scene, and much more. “I always look forward to meeting members of our community who have an interest in law enforcement. I enjoy the exchange of information and the oppor-
tunity to showcase the Plantation Police Department,” said Chief W. Howard Harrison. “The program is not only interesting, it’s a lot of fun,” added Lynn Braden, Crime Prevention and Community Relations Officer. Space is limited. Refreshments will be served. To register, or for more information, please call the Plantation Police Department Outreach, at (954) 916-5601 or visit www.plantation.org.

Coral Reefs, and Swamps, and Sugar Cane Fields…Oh My! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he Environmental Science & Everglades Restoration Magnet Program at South Plantation High School has been inspiring and educating students for the past 16 years. The unique program offers a curriculum to encourage students to become environmental stewards while learning major realworld environmental concepts. These lessons are not taught traditionally from text books, these students learn hands-on in environmental settings. The interactive approach is facilitated by taking the students on multiple field trips to various locations throughout the state. Since most trips are often around water, students must take a water safety course before venturing off campus. The most popular trip is to John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo. Students get up close and personal with species and the ecosystem that they learned about in the classroom by kayaking though mangroves and snorkeling through coral reefs. Another favorite is a visit to Everglades National Park. The ambitious Paladins are able to immerse themselves waist deep in the swamps, enjoy an airboat ride, and test water quality. Other learning opportunities have included tour-

ing US Big Sugar, a South Florida Water Management District Storm Water Treatment Area (STA), and camping out overnight at Zoo Miami. “I’ve learned a lot on magnet field trips since we actually get to see the things we learn about in class,” said Junior Anna Winslow. Also integrated in the program is service learning. Students go outside the classroom to do some gardening, landscaping, recycling, and collecting trash around their school. The purpose is for students to learn the meaning of hard work and the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment. “Regardless of whether we travel hours to tour a swamp, snorkel a coral reef, take five minutes to do a water quality test or identify native and invasive species, the field trip aspect of our magnet program is truly what makes our program worthwhile,” exclaims 12th grade magnet student Katie Casserly. “By putting us into the environments that we have learned about in the classroom and seeing first-hand the reality of our curriculum, we gain a better understanding and appreciation for everything that South Plantation’s Magnet Program stands for.”

person with dementia often experiences issues related to executive functioning. Planning, problem solving and executing tasks are all elements of executive functioning. These are all skills needed to complete many tasks related to finances and bill paying. Even if a person is not displaying significant issues with memory, there could be problems with the executive functioning. And often this is one of the first signs that family members notice. There are several indicators to look for that your loved one may be having some difficulty. Early in the disease, the person may need longer to figure out the amount to pay when out to a restaurant. Calculating the tip becomes more challenging. When paying in cash, processing the bills and change to put out might require more time than usual. In one example, a gentleman was paying his bill at the register and was using cash. The total came to $21.52. While going through his money, he knew that he needed to leave one of one kind of bill (a $20) and two of another ($1.00 bills). However, the gentleman took several seconds going through his bills and ended up giving the cashier two $20.00 bills and one $1.00 bill instead. The processing and planning difficulty is common. Bill paying takes many of the skills related to executive functioning, therefore, this is an aspect of the person’s life that should be looked at. Paying the bill late or not paying the correct amount are common mistakes that are made. In addition, checks not being signed or filled out completely are other issues seen frequently in persons with dementia. Having a legal representative named is a step that needs to occur for most adults, especially those with some cognitive issues. If this has not been completed, an elder law attorney can be of assistance. The Power of Attorney can act on behalf of the person as needed and in most cases, can have communication with banks, other financial institutions, and companies. It is important to provide help to your loved one, but also to maintain their dignity. Giving up financial control is a difficult step in the disease. Having a conversation with the person about the importance of financial security may be the first step and then to offer assistance. Family members often take away the task completely which may leave the person feeling diminished. Perhaps set up a day or two a month to pay bills together. This will allow the person to maintain independence but assuring that the bills are paid properly. If there are more difficulties, you may consider having the bills mailed directly to you to be certain that they are not being misplaced. It may be necessary for a family member to write out the bills and then have the person sign them. And as the disease progresses, the task will most likely need to be completed solely by the responsible party. Artis Senior Living of Davie is a new Memory Care Assisted Living located at 2794 South Flamingo Road in Davie. The community includes a central core, known as the “Town Center” flanked by four distinct “neighborhoods” that serve as intimate living spaces. ith the celebrating of the holidays behind us, the New Year is a great time to focus on your health and wellbeing. For many people losing weight is the big objective. We live in a country where a great many people weigh more than they should. If you have been wishing you could get rid of some excess fat but have had little success with dieting, Slender Fit U is the answer! For many years now Slender Fit U has been helping their clients to lose weight and even reduce or eliminate medications with an easy medically supervised weight loss program. On the diet it not uncommon to lose nearly a pound a day. That means with the 46 day program, you could very likely lose 40lbs or more. The typical person will lose ½ to 1 pound of body fat per day without exercise or special foods. During the program you will be monitored regularly and coached on what to eat to maximize the effectiveness of the program. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher is often referred to as the “HCG Guru”. A little over 10 years ago Geri quickly lost the extra pounds she wanted to get rid of with an HCG program and she got very excited about helping others do the same thing. In 2010 she opened an office in Davie and a few years later a second office in Coral Springs. Asked for some comments on the program, Ms. Kelleher stated, “The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Over the years I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals. We stay involved with all of our clients; one of the reasons for our high success rate is that we make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest prescription dosage available for weight loss. We also provide injectable prescription B12. The Lipotropic Vitamin B12 shots help detoxify the liver and increase metabolism and energy levels. The combination helps assure maximum weight loss without feeling hungry all the time or suffering from bad moods.” Here’s a quote from one of Slender Fit U’s clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long 30 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYPLANTATION.COM
workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” There are two programs to choose from. On the 23 day program women typically lose 15 pounds and men will typically lose 20 to 25 pounds. In the 46 day program the numbers average 30 pounds for women and 40 – 50 pounds for men. Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the HCG / B12 program you will go on a three week maintenance program gradually introducing a higher calorie diet where you will make sure that you do not gain any more than 2 or 3 pounds. This will then help lock in a new “normal” weight for your body allowing you to more easily maintain the weight loss as you return to normal eating. The diet helps “rebalance” the metabolism and in addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat you easily modify your relationship with food and eating to maintain long-term weight loss. What makes the diet so effective? Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You will also lose the inches around the waist and thighs where excess fat tends to collect. Before starting the diet you will get a physical exam from one of the medical doctors associated with the program. This is included in the cost of the program and involves no co-pay on your part. So how does the weight loss program work? It is a scientifically researched program that combines HCG and a low calorie diet during the 23 or 46 day program. HCG, which is short for Human Chronic Gonadotropin, is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists normally in men and women. Because it is a natural substance, the program is very safe with no side effects. You will also be eating regular foods like eggs, chicken and fish, green vegetables, apples and so forth. Most people experience little or no hunger during the Slender Fit U program because thanks to the HCG they are burning anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat. If you are ready to be on a diet program that really works and works very fast without a lot of exercise and hunger pains, come in and visit Geri Kelleher for a consultation. Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU. com or call 954-423-1376.

SPRING BREAK ACTIVITY GUIDE
S
pring Break is just around the corner. Many people, from around the country, will soon visit the beautiful beaches of South Florida. Here are some spring break activity ideas for those of us already lucky enough to live here.
Spring Break Day Camp
There are camps and activities for almost any interest. Whether your little one aspires to be the next David Beckham, the next Picasso or the next Gloria Estefan, there is likely a camp or activity right around the corner! Look over the next few pages to find information about areas camps that might interest your child.
Everglades Airboat Ride

Spring Break Ideas for Families Not Traveling
Give the kids the thrill of a lifetime while riding on an airboat through the untouched landscape of the Everglades. You will get to see some of Florida’s most exotic wild life including, of course the American Alligator. For more info contact Everglades Holliday Park at 954-434-8111 choose from multi-star resorts like the Margaritaville Beach Resort or find something a bit less expensive off the coast. Mid-week overnight prices won’t kill the budget either!
Check Out a Museum There are plenty of museum options to choose from in the area. Kids of all ages love the Museum of Discovery & Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection is a fascinating place to see many of the cars made famous in Hollywood films as well as some of the rarest Ferraris and Porsches the world over. Or, your family could check out marine life at the Miami Seaquarium. The opportunities are almost endless and, in many cases, just a short drive away.
Fishing
There are bodies of water almost everywhere you go in South Florida. Almost all of them contain wildlife. There are few better ways to teach the benefits of perseverance and patients than dipping
Video Game Olympics
The Beach
Video games aren’t just for kids! There are tons of entertaining video games that families can play together. Our family likes to buy some movie candy, pop some popcorn and go at it. Favorites for family time on the Xbox or PS4 include sing-along games like American Idol, Sports contest like the Madden football franchise or even Dance Revolution.
Staycation at a local Hotel One of the most exciting parts of traveling is staying in a new place, especially for kids. One thing South Florida has an abundance of is great hotels. Families that don’t have the time or finances to travel during Spring Break can get most of the benefits while staying close to home. Families can 26 MARCH 32 MARCH 2018 2018 || OURCITYAVENTURA.COM OURCITYPLANTATION.COM
hooks into the water and waiting for a bite. Many Broward County Parks allow and encourage fishing. Be sure to have the appropriate licenses. For more info on fishing licenses check out www.myfwc.com.
What better thing is there to do in South Florida when the kids are off school than go to the beach? There is certainly something for everyone: Hollywood Beach’s 1920s-style oceanfront promenade Broadwalk will appeal the nostalgic; Laid-back Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a great place to spend the day eating ice cream, reading a book and enjoying a less-busy existence; Pompano Beach offers terrific shopping and dining; the kids could watch mighty cruise ships set sail at Fort Lauderdale Beach; or, families can get away from it all at the John U. Lloyd Beach Sate Park. If you can’t get away, be sure to make this Spring Break one the remember anyway.

h, spring is here. That short time between the chills of winter and the blistering heat of summer brings us some of the most pleasant and picturesque days of the entire year. Along with all its splendor, spring also brings its traditionally fickle weather. For those new to South Florida, spring weather patterns can change drastically, with little or no notice, and can present serious hazards. A little awareness of spring’s rapidly changing weather patterns and how to handle them will allow you to enjoy the perfect seasonal weather all that much more. Lightning: South Florida is the lightning strike capital of the world. More people are injured or killed by lightning in Florida than anywhere else. This is very much in part due to the flat terrain and open spaces such as golf courses. It is important to understand that lightning can reach out as much as five miles from a storm front. So, while the sky may seem perfectly clear, there may be a storm rapidly approaching. If you are outside and you hear thunder, take the warning seriously and seek shelter. This means get inside and stay away from open windows and doors. If the storm approaches and lightning is active, avoid using electronic devices as well. Lightning has also been the cause of many fires in South Florida including large fires in the Everglades. Ensure your home’s electrical service is properly grounded. If you are out in a park or open area seek sturdy shelter in an outbuilding or restroom. Trees offer no protection from lightning. Downpours: South Florida is known for its rapid and sudden rain gushers. Even when the sun is shining, heavy, blinding rains can seem to appear from nowhere. Carrying an umbrella or lightweight rain gear during the spring and early summer months is never a bad idea.
If you are driving and encounter a rain gusher, do not stop. Also, do not turn on your hazards. Instead turn on your windshield wipers, and headlights. Slow your speed as the roads will get very slippery during the first few minutes of the downpour. If you are not comfortable driving in those conditions, pull to the side of the road and wait for the weather to clear. Also, do not attempt to drive or walk through standing water. You may have no idea of how deep the water is or what is underneath it. If a power line is brought down by high winds or heavy rain, assume it is live. Do not approach and call for assistance. Hail: Yes, hail. On rare occasions atmospheric conditions are right for hail to form here in Florida. Sometimes hail stones can be as large as golf balls. These can be dangerous when falling from the sky. Seek shelter quickly and remember, the ground will be slippery until the ice melts - which won’t take long. If all else fails, remember what we tell our relatives from up north…If you don’t like the weather here, wait an hour. For more information and safety tips, visit www.Plantation.org or Facebook.com/City of Plantation Fire Department. 36 MARCH 2018 | OURCITYPLANTATION.COM

ASK THE EXPERT
When is it Time for Adolescent Gynecology?
“The Auto Air Conditioning Specialist” Family Owned & Operated Since 1976
BY JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
O
ne of the most frequently asked questions we often receive is, “What is the appropriate age to take my daughter to the gynecologist?” As a girl matures and enters puberty, it’s important to have her first gynecology appointment. However, the thought of going to a gynecologist for the first time may make her feel nervous, embarrassed or even frightened if she doesn’t know what to expect. Additionally, she may not understand why she needs to go, especially if she is feeling fine. As a parent or guardian, you can make a significant difference in how she approaches her health and care, not only now, but in the years to come. Begin this process by easing any concerns she may have and talk to her before her visit, so she understands why the appointment is necessary and what to expect. Be sure to give her time to ask you questions as well. The Purpose for the Appointment. Make sure your daughter or the young teen in your care knows that the primary focus of the appointment will be to share information. She can ask general health questions or ask about things that may feel more confidential. Also, let her know that although she may not have questions now, she may in the future, so it is important to have yearly appointments, so she can get to know her gynecologist. Preparing for the Appointment. It is helpful to know the types of questions we may ask, so she can be prepared. For instance, we will always ask when her last menstrual cycle was. Although she may feel uncomfortable when we ask certain personal questions, please advise her about the importance of answering these questions truthfully. Easing Concerns about Exams. Teens may also have concerns about exams and testing. Help reassure her by explaining that her first visit may or may not include an external examination, and that an internal pelvic exam is usually not required until a woman is 21 years of age, unless she is experiencing problems. Give Her the Option to Have You in the Room. You daughter or the young teen in your care should also decide beforehand whether or not she would like you to join her in the exam room. Whatever she decides, be supportive, and make sure she also has some time alone with her care provider, so she has an opportunity to share any information she may be too embarrassed to reveal with you in the room. Our physicians are here to help and want you and your daughter to have a positive experience when you visit us, whether it is your first appointment, or if you have seen us many times. Encourage your daughter or the young teen in your care to explore our website and learn more about the care and services our physicians provide. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Dwight and Heather Kuhl went all the way to Ireland on an equestrian excursion. They felt like royalty when they stayed at the historical Abbeyglen Castle which had spectacular views of the Twelve Bens Mountains and the sea. They weren’t too far from the bustling village of Clifden which had great shopping, lively little pubs, and plenty of friendly locals to share Our City Plantation with.

We don’t like companies that prey on the uninformed. And neither do you. So the more you know about who we are, and our expertise in impact glass, the more likely you are to call us. We’re family-owned, local and A+ rated by BBB. We’re proudly Angie’s Listed and Ygrene Certified. We’re licensed, insured and we call our mom every day. We have this quirky habit of always telling the truth. It’s why our customers swear by us, not at us. We want you to know as much as we do about impact glass and accordion shutters. Because if you don’t, you could make a terribly expensive mistake. Call us. We’re Dependable.
THE MORE YOU KNOW ABOUT IMPACT GLASS, THE MORE LIKELY YOU’LL MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE.

HISTORICAL HOLIDAY MOMENTS
Plantation Historical Society members enjoyed a plentitude of holiday festivities at the Plantation Historical Museum during the season.
ALWAYS A SILVER LINING
JAFCO’s Silver Paradise 25th Anniversary Gala held under the holiday lights at the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa raised more than $1 million for abused and neglected children and those with developmental disabilities. The prestigious Jacob’s Ladder Award and four Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented while a special thank you was also given to the 36 inaugural members of the Silver Heart Society – an exclusive group of 100 families each donating a one-time gift of $25,000 to create a $2.5 million endowment that will support the children of JAFCO for the next 25 years.

DOGGONE FUN
The 17th annual Doggie Palooza at Happy Tails Dog Park had a big turnout despite the strong winds. Hundreds of humans and their fourlegged friends came out to the pup paradise where K9 demonstrations, pet contests, a doggie fun zone, and plenty of vendors were available. All event donations went to Canine Companions for Independence.
