People Are People Wherever You Go

W

e have had the fortune to travel all around the world over the past twenty years. In fact, we have lived in the English countryside, in the urban mega-city of Hong Kong, in swanky Nashville, and in the suburbs of Atlanta. In addition to living in those places, we have visited many more, and seen people of all walks of life: from villagers in rural Thailand to wealthy Europeans vacationing in the Canary Islands. What has been remarkable, throughout our travels, is not the differences we share, but how surprisingly similar people truly are. Don’t get us wrong, there are certainly differences in culture everywhere. A dining delicacy in one country is often considered gross, or worse, in another. However, most people we have met have been primarily focused on the same few values: a safe, peaceful place to raise a family; a sense of pride or validation in their endeavors or occupation; a source of relief from the stresses of our modern world; and belonging to a community. In an era where the twin pressures of globalization and technological innovation often push us in uncomfortable directions and division, it is helpful to remember that there is likely a family just like yours in Nairobi or Singapore or Tehran with ambitions and dreams not too different than the family right next door. In the end, people are people everywhere you go.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Relay for Life - Ready, Set, Go Sign Up! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

t’s that time of year again when many communities gather all over the globe with one common goal: to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and to raise funds to find a cure for cancer. This monumental event, and the single largest non-profit event in the world is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser “Relay for Life”. The “Relay” is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in thousands of communities and 27 countries and remains consistent in formalities no matter what part of the world it is in. This year the Plantation chapter will hold its’ event with opening ceremonies on Friday, April 12th at Plantation Central Park, located at 9151 NW 2nd Street, Plantation, at 6:00 pm with all activities commencing on Saturday,

April 13th at 9:00 am. “I have been volunteering with Relay for Life since 2014. However, in 2017 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma and my appreciation and commitment to Relay and the American Cancer Society (ACS) increased exponentially. My journey through this challenge proved first-hand the value of science and research conducted by ACS to ensure more people can survive more comfortably than ever before,” explained Keith Clements, Event Lead, Relay for Life Plantation Teams made up of families, friends, co-workers, and other organizations gather on-site at sundown and spend the night walking, running, and cheering each other on. Because cancer never sleeps, a member of each team must have at least one team member on the track at all times. “Relay for Life is an amazing community-wide event that my family and I have enjoyed being a part of for several years. It’s incredible how everyone comes

together for one purpose. I’ve watched my children go from active participants to true leaders, proud to honor those who have been affected by cancer. From set-up to clean up, my experience with Relay has been social, entertaining, solemn, exhausting but most of all rewarding,” exclaimed Jodi Swirsky, Marketing Lead, Relay for Life Plantation. Although cancer is never fun, this event certainly is. Teams are encouraged to show their spirit by decorating their tents and tees, playing games, listening to live entertainment, eating great food and of course, making new lifelong friends. The overall global goal is that by doing so, funds are being raised and awareness is made against the battle against cancer. “I’m very blessed to have such strong support from my family, friends and all the survivors/caregivers I’ve met along the way through Relay for Life,” added Clements. For more information about Relay for Life and how to register as a participant, volunteer, caregiver, or survivor, please contact plantationrelayforlife@gmail.com or call Brian Scott at 954-200-7532.

Full Court Advantage – PJWC Supports Make-A-Wish® Foundation BY BEVERLY PERKINS

F

or almost four decades, The Plantation Junior Woman’s Club (PJWC) has been hosting events to benefit Make-A-Wish ® Foundation of Southern Florida. The foundation creates lifechanging wishes for children with critical illnesses and life-threatening conditions. The simple, yet powerful belief inspired the founding of the nationwide non-profit organization. The Southern Florida Chapter began by giving one boy a computer and has since grown to grant wishes every 14 hours. Granting wishes take much work, and fortunately many individuals and entities have committed themselves to make a difference including the popular local woman’s club. Since the PJWC’s involvement, they have raised over $300 hundred thousand dollars. The astonishing amount has been raised through charity events such as galas, sporting tournaments, dances, and dinner parties. “To keep up with this legacy, this year, the PJWC is bringing back the Tennis Tournament, a once sought out event by a tennis enthusiast in Plantation. In years past, the tennis tournament has brought in over twelve thousand dollars in

sponsorships and donations with 100% of proceeds to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida,” exclaimed Rina Weiner, PJWC 2nd Vice President. More than fifty participants are expected to play a “Round Robin”- style tournament during

the three-hour event at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center on May 10th. Woman of all ages and levels are invited to participate, but the community

is encouraged to come out to cheer, watch the matches, join the silent auction, and support the Make-A-Wish ® Foundation of Southern Florida. The registration fee includes food and drinks. Raffles include items from restaurants, salons, local attractions, theaters, luxury accessories, massages, and more. “With the help of PJWC’s sustainers, Susie Phelps and Kathie Thiel, current members, Lisa Thompson, Treasurer, and I, the event is sure to be an exciting and fun for the entire community. With sponsors such as Smith Currie & Hancock, LLP, and Cardioflex Therapy, we are confident the 2019 tournament will be the best one yet,” added Weiner. The PJWC 2019 Tennis Tournament will be held at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center, 9101 NW 2nd Street, Plantation Central Park, Plantation on May 10th from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Registration Fee: $50.00. Registration Deadline: April 29, 2019, Registration Page: www.pjwcfl.org. For more information, please call Rina Weiner at 954-605-3514.

Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over the past decade. In 2018, it was estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Leonardo Oliveira, MD, sports health and running medicine specialist, to answer key questions about Leonardo Oliveira, MD running, and how runners of all types can prepare.

Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons.

Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Oliveira in Coral Springs or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida sports health specialist, call 800.597.2037 or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ SportsHealth to schedule online. For more information about Cleveland Clinic Florida Sports Health, visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ SportsHealth.

Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Connecting Veterans One Text at a Time BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he City of Sunrise recently announced that their first responders are the first adopters of “Vet-Connect”, a newly launched mobile app created to connect those who serve our country and communities with life-saving resources. The “Vet-Connect” app was created by a South Florida non-profit organization to reduce the epidemic of veteran suicide related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The life-saving app, developed by the LCpl Janos V Lutz Live to Tell Foundation, will allow police and fire personnel who encounter a member of the military in crisis to quickly connect them with a “Buddy Up” group of local vets who understand first-hand what they are going through. Founder Janine Lutz created the organization in 2013 after losing her son, the foundation’s namesake Marine veteran who was deployed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, to suicide. “After losing Johnny, and the realization that we’ve lost over 100,000 veterans to PTSD-related suicides and the myriad of everyday life stressors affecting them, my mission was clear: facilitate support through camaraderie and building local community,” explains Lutz. “First responders are often in the best position to identify veterans in a

crisis situation, intervene, and get them connected to our local safety net before it’s too late. The City of Sunrise has already been a great partner in this program!” Those that download the VetConnect app will be personally welcomed within 24 hours by a veteran in the Lutz Buddy Up Broward Social Club. Since 2013, the local chapter of the organization’s growing network has welcomed over fifty veterans at their free meetings. This network of regional Buddy Up clubs has already been approved as a mental health resource by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense. As the Vet-Connect app use increases, Buddy Up clubs will continue to grow by building on existing relationships with veterans’ centers around the country “I am confident that the City of Sunrise Police and Fire-Rescue Departments will set a great example for other agencies throughout the country in recognizing these Buddy Up Social Clubs and the Vet-Connect app as community building and

lifesaving best practices,” said Sunrise Mayor Michael Ryan. “In addition to our designation as a Purple Heart City and our reservation of special parking spaces for Combat Wounded veterans at City facilities, initiatives such as our Veterans Advisory Board have consistently given a voice to veterans’ concerns. We’re proud to do more to honor the sacrifices of members of our military and lessen their distress by spreading the awareness of Vet-Connect.” n Vet-Connect is available for download now from the Google Play app store for Android phones at https://play.google.com/store/apps/ details?id=com.gjhdigital.Vet-Connect and will soon be released in the iTunes app store for Apple phones.

MAYOR COLUMN

Spring is Here! BY MAYOR LYNN STONER pring is the time when many of us feel a sense of rebirth or transformation into a better version of ourselves. But it’s about more than just “spring cleaning” or “planting flowers.” It’s a chance to review all that you’ve accomplished up to that point and make plans for the goals you want to achieve in the coming months and years. The same can be said for our City. For the past several years, I have been talking to many of you about what you love about Plantation, and where you believe improvements can be made. I have heard your collective voices and have begun the work. To date, we’ve implemented some of my plans, and have set into motion processes for others. In the coming months, you’ll hear more about the changes taking place in the City, from department reorganizations that will improve efficiencies, to employee reassignments to better utilize their talent and skill set in an area more suited for them. I am truly excited about the future of Plantation. And I know many of you share my sense of enthusiasm and anticipation. I will continue to listen to you; feel free to give my office a call or send me a quick email with your ideas and thoughts. Together, we will make Plantation the best version of itself! I also want to remind everyone about some of the programs presented by the City throughout the next few months. The temperatures are milder, the humidity a little more tolerable, and it’s a great time to connect with neighbors and friends in one of Plantation’s world-class facilities or parks. Plantation’s newest event, Rock the Park, has proven to be more successful than anyone could have imagined. The first Friday of each month you can watch great local bands perform your favorite hits. It runs through April, then picks up again in November. Also coming in April is the Royal Egg Hunt (April 20), a favorite with kids and parents alike. Bring a basket and get to Pop Travers Field early; it starts at 10:00 AM sharp! Finally, it is the Easter Buffet at Plantation Preserve (April 21). Holidays are a time for relaxing with family and friends. Leave the cooking and cleaning to them and enjoy a classic Easter dinner. Reservations are recommended. May is full of events for residents of all ages. The annual Teddy Bear Picnic at Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library (May 4) has been a family favorite for over 20 years. Bring your teddy bear and a picnic lunch. Mothers are tops in Plantation and are celebrated at the Mothers Are So Sweet event, (May 11) held at the Plantation Community Center and the annual Mother’s Day Brunch (May 12) at Plantation Preserve. Teens ages 13 through 17 will have a splashin’ good time in the pool, with music, games, food, and fun, at the Teen Glow Splash Bash (May 17). Finally, pay your respects to those who gave their lives for our freedom at the City’s Memorial Day Service, held at Veterans Park on May 29. Spring is a wonderful time to be in South Florida, and Plantation is at the center of it all, and has something for everyone!

Jeon’s Korean Martial Arts Master Academy Kicks Off Their Grand Opening in Plantation BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

part from self-defense lessons and other great programs, Jeon’s Korean Martial Arts Master Academy (JKMA) provides a safe, clean, friendly, family-oriented, and traditional Korean environment as well as a state-of-the-art facility where everyone, no matter what age or cultural belief, feels right at home. Grand Master Jeon and his wife Master Grace Lee ensure all students receive personal attention and are provided with the best training to build discipline, respect, focus, balance, defense, and confidence. JKMA is also the home of the Korean Martial Arts Culture & Education Foundation (KMACE). Besides being passionate about teaching martial arts, the husband and wife team are committed to making a difference in their community through their programs. Furthermore, they pride themselves on having a positive impact on people’s lives by instilling discipline and confidence to enrich the lives of many. They are recently broadening their community reach by opening their third location in Plantation this month. Master Grace Lee and Grand

Master Jae D. Jeon recently took the time to answer some questions about their academy. What classes and/or programs do you offer? We offer self-defense lessons to people of all ages and have special programs for kids, adults, teens, & women. We teach Hapkido SelfDefense private lessons to executives, Gumdo (Korean Sword), Taichi and Kickboxing for Women and Seniors, Positive Character building After-school and Camps for kids

and youth., as well as a Korean Language and Culture exchange program bridging Korea and USA and special seminars and programs designed for people of every age and every level. What is special about your staff? Not only are we highly qualified and credentialed martial arts masters, but we also strive to create a friendly and family-oriented environment through the principles of the art. There is no other martial arts studio in South Florida with a team of credentialed instructions like the instructors we have at Jeon’s. Combined our instructors have over 95 years of martial arts experience and each one is certified by multiple and prestigious Korean martial arts organizations. Grand Master Jae D. Jeon is the only Master in South Florida with 8th- degree black belt in both Hapkido and Taekwondo certified by the Kukkiwon and the MooMooKwan and Korea Hapkido Federation. Grand Master Hyun S Kang holds 7th-degree black belt in Hapkido and 4th-degree Taekwondo. Master Grace Lee holds 4th-degree both in Hapkido and Taekwondo.

Why is your school different from others in the area? What has made your school special? Besides being the only school to teach authentic Hapkido in the area, our major distinction is that we are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization providing our services to support and benefit children and youth in the community. Scholarships are offered to those who qualify through gifts from tax-deductible charities. We also use donations to subsidize afterschool, summer camps, and tournament team participation at local and international levels. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about JKMA? Everyone is talking about Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and the great thing about Hapkido is it offers a variety of training not found in any other styles. Hapkido is the most complete martial arts system in the world. Hapkido employs strikes, kicks, joint locks, throws, ground fighting, pressure points and more. We have a great team of instructors and students. Be part of our team and get countless benefits including weight loss, lessons to maintain a healthy lifestyle, flexibility, improved concentration, and better grades in school for kids. We invite ALL to join us for a complimentary class.

n Jeon’s Korean Martial Arts Master Academy (JKMA) is located at 1051 S. University Drive (next to LA Fitness and Aora in the Market on University shopping center) in Plantation. IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Slender Fit U Will Help You Lose Weight and Get Healthier BY DEBBY TEICH

I

s focusing on health and well-being is at the top of your list of New Year’s resolutions? After celebrating the holidays with family and friends and indulging in high calorie foods at festive meals and parties, are your clothes feeling a little tighter and the numbers on the scale a little higher? If you have struggled with diets in the past, Slender Fit U can help you lose that holiday bulge and achieve your goal of getting healthier in 2019. It works fast - without exercise and hunger pains! Slender Fit U is helping clients lose the weight, get healthier and even reduce or eliminate medications with a very simple to follow medically supervised weight loss program. Clients typically lose 1⁄2 to 1 pound of actual body fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods. The Slender Fit U program also helps clients modify their relationship with food and eating habits, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher, often referred to as the “HCG Guru,” truly understands the benefits of the program and works closely with her clients to help them achieve maximize results. She lost 25 pounds in six weeks on Geri Kelleher, Owner the program and has and Program Director kept it off for 11 years. Slender Fit U changed her life forever. Soon after, she started helping others achieve their own weight loss goals. In 2010, she opened a clinic in Davie. A few years later she opened a second clinic in Coral Springs. Geri answered some commonly asked questions about the Slender Fit U program. What do love most about your job? The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Over the years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this easy program. How does Slender Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage available for weight loss. Do you offer B12 shots? Yes. We also give injectable prescription B12. The Lipotropic Vitamin B12 shots help detoxify the liver and increase metabolism and energy levels. The combination of HCG and B12 helps assure maximum weight loss without feeling hungry all the time or suffering from bad moods. Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this

24 APRIL 2019 | OUR CITY PLANTATION | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” How much can clients expect to lose? The typical person will lose ½ to 1 pound of body fat per day without exercise or special foods. How many programs do you offer? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. On the 23-day program, women typically lose 15 pounds and men will typically lose 20 to 25 pounds. On the 46-day program, the numbers average 30 pounds for women and 40-50 pounds for men. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the HCG/B12 program, you go on a threeweek maintenance program, gradually introducing a higher calorie diet and making sure that you do not gain any more than two or three pounds. This will then help lock in a new “normal” weight for your body allowing you to more easily maintain the weight loss as you return to normal eating. The diet helps “rebalance” the metabolism. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, you easily modify your relationship with food and eating to maintain long- term weight loss. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Before starting the diet, you will get a physical examfrom one of the medical doctors associated with the program. This is included in the cost of the program and involves no co-pay on your part. David lost 53 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

AFTER

Maria lost 27 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

AFTER

"I'm very happy with my results. It is also a very friendly environment. I will recommend Slender Fit U to my friends and family." – Maria

Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low-calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed. How does the weight loss program work? It is a scientifically researched program that combines HCG and a low-calorie diet during the 23 or 46-day program. HCG, which is short for Human Chronic Gonadotropin, is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists normally in men and women. The female body uses this substance during pregnancy where high levels are produced to almost completely control the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? Because HCG is a natural substance, the program is very safe with no side effects. What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes proteins, fruit and vegetables. This makes for an easy transition onto stabilization and then back to regular life. Are clients hungry on the diet? Most people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They are getting anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat, depending on how much fat they have. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. Slender Fit U clients usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800-calorie limit!

SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 6

"I feel incredible. I haven't weighed this little in at least a decade. The diet was easy to follow and I lost over 50 pounds. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is serious about losing a lot of weight." – David

CAN DO KID

Seminole Middle School Student Celebrates Historical Moment BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

ypical 12-year-old boys usually prefer to hang out with friends, shoot hoops, and play video games in their free time. But not Ben Polsky, the seventh-grade Seminole Middle School student has been working diligently to pardon wrongly accused men known as The Groveland Four. A few years ago, the ambitious youngster and his mother Nancy Polsky wrote “Re-Righting History: The Groveland Boys”. Their passionate story about the four innocent black youths found guilty for a terrible crime they did not commit created awareness of one of the most grotesque racist episodes in state history. Although Walter Irvin, Samuel Shepard, Charles Greenlee, and Ernest Thomas are no longer living, members of their family are. “What started as a simple Ben visiting Ms. Henrietta Irvin, sister of Walter Irvin, school project to write a one of the Groveland Boys children’s nonfiction book who was too ill to travel for the historic event. became something very

personal as soon as I first met Carol Greenlee and the other Groveland family members. As Carol keeps reminding me ‘People will come into your path who lift you up and encourage you to keep going when you get weary.’ I am humbled and excited to be on this journey together,” expressed Ben Polsky. Last year during Black History Month, Ben and his fellow students wrote postcards to the Governor and members of the cabinet requesting expedited clemency review. This year all the Seminole Panthers were celebrating the victorious pardon made by Gov. Ron DeSantis who called the case a “miscarriage of justice” on his third day in office. Over 1200 students wrote personal messages of gratitude which Ben hand-delivered to Tallahassee just last month. “The students learned Ben is held by Pulitzer Prize winning author of about the political process Devil in the Grove, Gilbert King as they celebrate with and how their contribution to FL Representative Bobby making a difference, helping DuBose of Fort Lauderdale.

one another, and developing a sense of empowerment that their voices matter,” explained Nancy Polsky. “We are truly so blessed to be part of a caring school community who helped clear these men’s names. We are so happy for the Groveland families who are now like family to us. We are proud Panthers!” “As an educator, nothing is more rewarding than having one of your students inspire learning amongst his peers. Ben and his mother Nancy brought back to life a forgotten story buried in the annals of history. They did such a remarkable job in helping students realize the true meaning of the promises of civil liberties. Possibly even more importantly, they made a 70-year-old story relevant to today’s students and allowed them to participate in changing history,” said 6th Grade History Teacher Susan Fried. “I credit the Polsky’s with facilitating the ‘righting of this wrong’ and helping today’s students understand that the memories of the Groveland Boys serve to inspire liberty and justice for all!”

ASK THE EXPERT

Growing Pains in Children or Merely Flatfeet? BY DR. JOHN GOODNER

F

oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night, after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to

prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot. An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified, and the problem treated. Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults. Every Bunny Loves an Egg Hunt! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

t’s that time of year, as the clocks have already sprung forward noting that springtime is here along with its signature holiday and many traditions. One symbol of the season is the egg, and most notably a decorated one for the holiday of Easter. Decorating eggs dates back centuries ago, along with the story of an egg-laying hare. Modern traditions have been added throughout the years including Easter parades, bonnets, and plenty of chocolates and candy. However, the most anticipated event amongst youngsters is the traditional egg hunt. Children love the game of collecting the most plastic eggs which often contain tiny prizes and mementos. Many communities have organized hunts for the little ones to participate in including Plantation and Sunrise. For years, the GFWC Plantation Women’s Club and the City of Plantation Parks & Recreation Department have co-hosted the annual Royal Egg Hunt. The event starts promptly at 10:00am, rain or shine on Saturday, April 20th. Children ages 3-10 are invited to bring a basket to celebrate the anticipated holiday. They will be divided by age groups and assigned an age-appropriate field to collect their eggs at Pop Traver’s Field, 6250 SW 16th Street, Plantation. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase. A raffle prize drawing will be held at the conclusion of the hunt. “This year’s egg hunt will be better than ever. We will be having the traditional egg hunt at 10am sharp, followed by free family fun activities including a petting zoo of bunnies, inflatables, a meet and greet with the Easter Bunny and more,” exclaimed Shannon Ryan Superintendent of Administration and Special Events

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF

Watch the Water – Watch the Kids BY DON TODD, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF

W

hile it may be a bit too early to think about opening your backyard pool, the hot weather is just around the corner. Summertime means backyard barbecues, sunbathing, and fun time in the pool. It is important to remember, however that drowning remains the leading cause of death among children in Florida. Every year dozens of children, in South Florida alone, lose their lives by drowning in the family’s backyard pool. Dozens more are critically and often permanently injured due to drowning. Yet this horrific tragedy is fully preventable, and prevention is easy. Drowning prevention messages can often be numerous and confusing. But it is the simplest solutions that provide the best return. This summer we are partnering with Plantation General Hospital to remind everyone that when it comes to pool safety, nothing replaces adult supervision. The message is a simple one. Just remember to

“Watch the Water-Watch the Kids.” Anytime a child is near any body of water adult supervision must be present. This means a responsible adult MUST be at poolside all the time. And, the adult should not be distracted by texting, surfing the internet, Facebooking, or anything else that takes their attention away from the pool. If for some reason the adult must walk away, even for a moment, have the kids exit the pool. Anytime the pool is not being used, a properly installed pool barrier should be secured around it. Too frequently young children find their way into the backyard through an open or unlocked door and fall into the pool unexpectedly or while reaching for a toy. Remember, it only takes a moment for a tragedy to happen. During our often-hectic days, it’s not uncommon for our children to slip from our sites, if only for a few seconds. Finally, everyone should learn CPR. The skills involved in CPR are simple and can help save a life. The American Heart Association and American Red Cross offer community CPR courses. Check with them for courses that are convenient for your schedule. Your neighbors at the Plantation Fire Department

HEALTH & WELLNESS

5 Questions to Ask If You Have Stomach Pain BY DR. CHARLES LAGO hether you call it a stomach or tummy ache or the more medical “abdominal pain,” we’ve all had stomach pain. In fact, it’s one of the most common reasons people go to the ER. It also has one of the most complex lists of potential causes—from the benign (a pulled stomach muscle) to life-threatening (appendicitis). Talk to an ER doctor and you’ll find someone who’s accustomed to evaluating it on a regular basis. So, you know what abdominal pain feels like. But how do you know when to ride it out at home or make a trip to the ER? To help you answer that question and to make things a little easier, here’s a cheat sheet you can share with your friends and family. If you answer yes to any of these questions, consider heading to the ER: 1. Severity: Is the pain so severe that when it’s present, you can’t focus on or do other things? 2. Vomiting: Are you also vomiting? Vomiting alone doesn’t mean you need to go to the ER, but are you vomiting so much that you’re unable to keep down even fluids? Are you vomiting blood? 3. Output: Are you having changes in your stool like blood or dark black (also potentially a sign of bleeding)? Is there blood in your urine? 4. Other symptoms: Are you having difficulty breathing? Chest pain? Does the abdominal pain spread directly to your back? 5. Other history: Have you recently had abdominal surgery? Are you pregnant (or have you recently given birth)? Has there been other trauma to your stomach/abdominal area? Are you on chemotherapy or do you have any other condition that could compromise your immune system?

W

Sometimes it can be tough to know when to seek care -- and many people try to “tough it out.” The very best gauge is your own gut (literally). If what you’re experiencing is severe, different from anything you’ve felt before or just worrisome to you, don’t second-guess it. Let an ER doctor evaluate you or see a GI specialist.
