Retail Therapy Took on a Whole New Meaning at Westfield Broward BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
couple of months ago, Westfield Broward partnered with iHeart Radio’s Y100 to host “Beauty & Balance” at Plantation’s well-known shopping mall. The event, co-hosted by Y100’s DJ Mack, welcomed the community to indulge in an afternoon of wellness with complimentary makeovers, beauty services, popular fitness classes, health screenings, giveaways, live painting, and more. Hundreds attended the one-day wellness event which promoted health, wellness, and community. The afternoon started with an exhilarating Zumba class by Blanca Emsley followed by complimentary manicures and eyebrow threading by Lashes & Go, complimentary makeovers by Sephora, free health screenings by Memorial Regional Hospital, a beauty masterclass hosted by Macy’s and Estée
Lauder, and concluded with a high-energy dance workout with KARIZMA. “We’re excited to host this event,” exclaimed Angel Cabrera, General Manager of Westfield Broward Mall. “There is something for everyone to enjoy and a chance for the community to come together.” Little ones had the opportunity to enjoy face painting while their parents, siblings, and friends participated in the day’s activities. Participants and shoppers were also able to take advantage of the fun photo booth complete with fun props as they showed off their new look and big smiles.
In conjunction with the event and Westfield Broward’s Art Society that highlights various artists throughout the year at the mall; featured artist, Prado, conducted a live painting during the event in addition to the other vendors presenting and performing throughout the JCPenny Court. The first 100 attendees to arrive received a $25 American Express gift card, and several prize giveaways were available throughout the event. In addition, guests were encouraged to participate in Westfield Broward’s Instagram sweepstakes for the chance to win a $150 H&M gift card by hashtaging #BeautyandBalance as well as tagging and following @WestfieldBroward during the month of March. Lastly, the entire community was invited to enter Westfield’s online Beauty & Balance sweepstakes for the opportunity to win a gift bag with more than $1K of retail valued products, such as Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works, enclosed. “We are so happy with the turnout for this event and that the public was able to come together and focus on being beautiful on the inside and out, and having that balance in their lives,” added Cabrera.

That’s A Big 10-4 Good Buddy BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he City of Plantation Parks and Recreation has been working diligently to create free familyfriendly events around the city. From senior movies and health expos to a community garage sale, bicycle scavenger hunt, and Yoga in the Park, the grass is certainly greener in the great city. Although Mother Nature wasn’t cooperative for the much-anticipated and muchloved Doggie- Palooza during its scheduled date, the rescheduled date was tail-wagging fun for all two and four-legged guests. No bones about it, it’s an all-time favorite in Plantation! The first season concert series of Rock the Park was a grand slam with headliners such as The Shane Duncan Band, Mr. Nice Guy, The Caribbean Chillers, The Motowners, Brass Evolution, and Turnstiles. Residents enjoyed listening to music under the stars, finding new bites from local food trucks, and meeting neighbors with similar interests. Another new event recently added to the long list was Touch-A-Truck. Approximately 1,300 people attended the inaugural event on a most beautiful South Florida day which showcased the Plantation
Equestrian Center. This was a dream for all youngsters that love trucks. It presented an opportunity to get up close to various types of vehicles. “When I approached Public Works, Utilities, Fire, Police and the Parks Departments about participating, everyone was so excited. We put out a request for sponsors and very quickly Sunbelt Rentals wanted to help us make this happen. With their sponsorship we were able to offer free pony rides, hay rides and stick horse races,” exclaimed Shannon Ryan, Superintendent of Administration and Special Events for the City of Plantation. “Soon we had some private companies bringing their trucks and we ended up with approximately thirty trucks/equipment for the children to get to touch.” The first hour was a horns-free hour so any children with sensitivity to sound could attend and enjoy just the same. Fire trucks, police SWAT vehicles, construction trucks, tractors, bulldozers, and many more along with their professionals were on-hand to demonstrate and educate the little ones. The City staff did a great job assisting and it ran seamlessly. So much so, they are looking forward to doing it again next year.
“I took my 8-year-old grandson and he had a blast. He enjoyed being able to get into all the trucks and to have his picture taken. The pony rides were a real hit. Thanks to everyone who made it such a success,” said one happy resident in an email after the event.
“Staff were all polite and professional. I fear the dentist and they put me at ease. The dentist was gentle and very knowledgeable. I haven’t been to the dentist in a long time and they treated me with respect and kindness... no derision. Would recommend to anyone!” Jennifer C, Current Patient

“A fantastic experience. My hygienist was fabulous. I hugged her when I left. She was kind, gentle, and caring. The front desk staff were very friendly and professional. Clean and sophisticated offices. Impressed by everything they offer to calm patients. I hate the dentist, but this place was amazing. Will definitely be back.” Chandra D, Current Patient

Student Voice and Student Choice – A New Pathway to Learning at SPHS BY BEVERLY PERKINS
R
eading, writing, and arithmetic are typically the core components of education. However, millennial learners are accustomed to those subjects integrated with science, technology, and engineering (STEM). But, educators at South Plantation High School (SPHS) have found another way to get students engaged in learning along with the traditional approach. “Pathways of Innovation” is a little-known program housed at the Plantation high school. The unique program focuses on cross-curricular project-based learning with a real-world component. Students
master grade-level standards by completing projects based on their own essential question. After direct instruction, the students develop their own unique essential question and research it thus allowing them to craft their own road map to learning what they are passionate about. “The 9th and 10th graders write a paper in FSA format and the 11th and 12th graders write a paper in APA format. After the paper, they get ready to show their teachers what they know but they don’t do this in the traditional multiple choice or fill in the blank test. Instead, Pathways of Innovation students engage in performance task assessments,” explained Gigi Kean, SPHS Pathways Program Coordinator. “They create a product of their choice, based on their learning style and interest and through this product they demonstrate what they learned from their research. The paper, product, presentation format is known as P3 and each project cycle is about four weeks long.” The core academic courses in “Pathways of Innovation” are honors level language arts, mathematics, and social studies. What sets the program apart from others is that there are no set academic requirements for admission into the program.
“The ‘Pathways of Innovation’ staff keeps student voice and student choice at the heart of everything they do; therefore, test scores and grade point averages take a backseat to the student as a person and as a learner. What will remain the same as traditional education is the student’s schedule and the student’s transcript. The grades the students earn are the same, but it is how those grades are earned that is different,” added Kean. Additional program highlights include a student board with representatives from each grade level, social service projects, unpaid internships at sites including the Neuropsychic department at NSU and local preschools, and many others. The creative students present on their real-world projects midway through the year and at the end of the year in an exhibition format to demonstrate the relevance and rigor. In order to become a part of this dynamic program, the student must apply and then participate in an informal interview with the Pathways of Innovation staff. If interested in applying or gathering more information, please contact the program coordinator, Mrs. Gigi Kean at 754-323-1990 or at gigikean@ browardschools.com.

CAN DO KID
Local Teen Hits It Out of The Park at Plantation Retirement Community BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
ypically, most high school students like to hang out with friends when not doing school work on the weekends. However, Asher Jurman enjoys visiting retirement facilities where he can converse with seniors, byways of a program he created called “Let’s Talk”. The goal of the interactive program is to connect teens to seniors. “The content of his Let’s Talk Baseball combines his primary passions of sports, history, and business whereas the execution of the program takes advantage of his natural propensity to connect with seniors,” explains his mother Julie Jurman. “The motivation to create ‘Let’s Talk Baseball’ and share his sports memorabilia from yesteryear to trigger memories and elicit discussion stems partly from having close relatives struggling with memory-related issues. Asher had seen firsthand the positive response and the memories recalled from his own grandparents and their friends when he
showed them some of his old baseball antiques.” The NSU University School junior always loved America’s favorite pastime since he was a little boy, and he has been collecting antiques, including sports memorabilia from the 1940s to 1950s since he was in middle school. In the past couple of years, he has been bringing his collection to many South Florida senior centers, and most recently Covenant Village. Today’s senior population grew up with baseball as an integral part of their lives, and so far, the ambitious teen reached over 250 seniors. Plantation’s premier retirement community graciously welcomed Asher and were excited to share their stories and their collections. Many assume that the “show and share” appeals only to men, but it scores a home run with women too. Many women from the era are baseball fans and have fond memories of seeing or listening to games with their families. The senior-focused program includes baseball pictures, videos, stories, trivia, and music as well as displays of old baseball gloves, baseballs, bats, soda bottles, tobacco tins and magazines from the 1940s - 1960s. In addition, foods associated with baseball, including Cracker Jacks and Babe Ruth candy bars,
are distributed. Seniors can use their senses to see, touch, taste and smell various baseball-related items to hopefully recall favorable memories and relive treasured moments. “I love to hear seniors enthusiastically talk about their baseball memories and see them enjoy my memorabilia along with old film clips and magazines. Baseball was such an important part of so many of their lives. I don’t think they get a lot of young people actually listening to their stories and experiences. By learning from them, I get to know more about the history and what times were like back then,” exclaimed Asher. “The residents enjoyed Asher’s presentation and memorabilia. They were impressed with his devotion, enthusiasm, and dedication for his program,” said Candace Jenks, ADC, Healthcare Activity Coordinator for Covenant Retirement Communities. Baseball connected the generations during the middle 20th century and Asher hopes to connect many more generations with his program. Whether you want to connect with seniors over a love of baseball, history or another shared interest, please contact Asher at letstalkwithseniors@gmail.com

ASK THE EXPERT
Ankle Ligament Injuries in Teenagers and Adults BY DR. JOHN GOODNER he ankle is a complex joint consisting of bones, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and joint lining. The primary motion of the ankle is up and down. It has limited side-to-side motion. When excess motion occurs from side to side, ankle ligaments can tear. Ligaments connect bones together. Once the ligaments are torn instability can develop. On the outside of the ankle there are three ligaments. The inside of the ankle has five and connecting the tibia and fibula are three more. Ankle ligament injuries can occur from stepping off of a step and rolling the ankle, to playing sports and coming down and landing on somebody’s foot. It is also very common in women who wear heels and roll their ankle to the outside, causing damage to the ligament structure of the ankle. When ligament injuries occur, it is most often associated with a feeling of a crack or a pop, and is associated with pain, swelling, occasionally discoloration and inability to weightbear. It is always best to evaluate these ankle injuries as soon as possible. A thorough history and physical will allow the doctor to identify the ligaments that have been injured and the extent of the injury. X-rays are taken and occasionally MRIs if the suspected damage is significant.
T
Treatment is then aimed at reducing the damage to the ligaments and giving the ligaments an opportunity to heal primarily. Treatment for these injuries could be as simple as RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). For a very simple stretching injury to the ankle ligaments, an ankle brace is used most often. When the ligaments are torn, then immobilization is absolutely necessary. A boot or a cast is applied for two to six weeks. Patients are allowed to immediately weightbear. Cross training is completely allowed. Avoid any type of anti-inflammatory. This will help to reduce the inflammation but at the cost of allowing those ligaments to heal because inflammation is a critical part of the healing process. Physical therapy may be necessary after cast removal. A return to sports could take four to eight weeks. Chronic instability may develop if treatment has not been initiated immediately. This may be corrected with a ligament tightening procedure. Long-term prognosis is almost always excellent. n Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults. MAYOR COLUMN
Understanding the City Budget BY MAYOR LYNN STONER pril showers bring May flowers! Well, in Plantation it also brings the start of budget season. Not as pretty, but vital to the City’s financial operation and health. Most people don’t understand how a municipal budget works. So, in the interest of promoting open government and an understanding of the process, I’d like to briefly explain. The City provides a full range of services including police and fire protection, emergency medical service, water and wastewater services, sanitation, recreation, public improvements, streets, planning and zoning, and general administrative services. Additionally, the City is financially accountable for three independent units, or business districts, that are included within the City’s financial statements. They are Plantation Gateway Development District, the Plantation Midtown Development District, and the Community Redevelopment Agency. The City Budget is intended to establish an action, operation, and financial plan for the delivery of those City services, and details how our overall goals will be achieved. It is the single most important document that is prepared and presented to City Council. In adopting the budget, we identify what is to be done, how it is accomplished, and what is the expected result. The goals and plans discussed balance citizen needs and expectations against available resources, i.e. revenue and personnel. Along with the “big picture” come thousands of details. Early in the year, all City departments are required to submit requests for expenditures, including capital purchases, to the Mayor. Expansion of activities is recommended where required, while costs are minimized and efforts to economize on operational necessities are retained. These requests are used as a starting point for developing a proposed budget. The maximum ad valorem tax rate, or millage rate, is set by City Council in July. Ad valorem revenue is equivalent to one dollar ($1) per thousand dollars of estimated taxable value of a home or property, as determined by the Broward County Property Appraiser. It is the largest source of income for the General Fund, accounting for 47.6 percent of the total. Once expenditure needs have been balanced against revenue sources, the Mayor then presents the proposed budget to the City Council during the first week of September each year. The operating budget includes proposed expenditures/expenses and the means of financing them. The City Council is required to hold two public hearings on the proposed budget and to adopt a final budget by September 30. The City’s budget year runs from October 1 to September 30 each year. The appropriated budget is prepared by fund, function, and department. It is posted online for anyone to review and is then reviewed by staff through monthly financial statements to ensure compliance. While it is a thoroughly comprehensive document, it is worth taking time to review and understand just how your City tax dollars are used in the provision of services. This year’s Budget Hearings are scheduled for September 4th and 11th at 7:30 PM in City Hall Council Chambers, located at 400 NW 73rd Avenue, Plantation 33317.

HOME & DESIGN
The Art of Interior Design BY NEVINE GROULX ETHNICA DESIGNS oving season is approaching and many will be anxious to settle in their new home whether it is a house, townhouse or an apartment. For some, this is a big step that can bring along stress and anxiety as they are faced with the dilemma of “What to Do Next”. They ask themselves; do we use our old furniture? Buy new furniture? How do we arrange and decorate that empty space? This is a good time to invest in hiring a professional interior designer who can help make your dream space a reality. An experienced designer can visualize the layout of the space, create interiors that are functional, safe, and beautiful by determining space requirements and selecting decorative items such as color, lighting, and materials. COLOR is a powerful design tool in decoration as well as in interior design, which is the art of composing and coordinating colors together to create a stylish scheme on the interiorarchitecture of the space. Colors make the room feel either more calm, cheerful, comfortable, stressful, or dramatic. LIGHTING in a home changes the mood of a room just as it does the perceived size of the space. Placement and type of lighting are important aspects of interior design and they work in conjunction with color selection, room size, availability of natural light and furniture selection. The elements that come together when the right lighting is achieved transforms a room. MATERIAL is critical to the success of interior design. An exceptional design speaks volume by the material used to complete its finish. A few factors to consider when selecting fabrics are durability, budget, comfort, safety, and flexibility. Adding the right carpet, wallpaper, tiles, and woods can contribute to the warmth and sophistication of any space. A successful interior designer is the one that has a well-rounded education, vision to visualize a full design of a space even when it’s empty and the skills to work within many disciplines from architectures, graphic design, decorative arts, textiles, furniture, and lighting design. Creating a beautiful home is just the beginning; The home of your dreams looks amazing, but even more importantly, the home of your dreams makes you feel amazing. It is the reflection of everything you are and everything you want to be. It should be the place where you and your family can work, play and relax. Your home is meant to be your foundation and your haven. It’s where you should find peace and recharge. When you live in a space that supports the life you want to live, stress melts away and dreams find a way of coming true. Interior design is not just about making the right choices or the right pieces, the best interior design is inspired not by trends but by your needs, your dreams and the essence of all you are.

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF
Time to Prepare for Hurricane Season BY DON TODD, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF t’s almost that time of year…June 1st through November 30th is Hurricane season. During this time of year storm systems can form anywhere in the Atlantic and Caribbean. Hurricanes are destructive and can be deadly. We have no way to control them. However, we can, with some accuracy, predict what is going to happen so we can prepare ourselves accordingly. The time to prepare is now! Do not wait until a storm is approaching to be get ready. Supplies are often limited when a storm is imminent and some supplies such as water and generators will be difficult to find at that point. Here are some reminders about how to weather storm season. Is your home storm ready? Will your home withstand storm force winds? If you’re not sure consult a structural engineer. Windows and doors are the weakest part of the home. Properly fitted storm shutters are essential to protect your home’s openings. If you are not familiar with how-to put-up storm shutters or don’t think you are capable secure assistance now. Don’t wait until a storm is approaching. People are seriously injured or killed every year putting up and taking down storm shutters. Assemble an Emergency Kit: An emergency kit includes items you will need for at least 72 hours following a storm. A complete list of necessary items is on our website. A Word About Generators: If using a generator, make sure you know how to operate it safely. This includes using properly rated extension cords and keeping it away from windows or
I

doors to prevent carbon monoxide from entering your home. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can be lethal. If you have a generator a CO detector is a must. Should You Evacuate? If your home is not secure, you live in a low-lying area, or a manufactured home consider evacuation during a storm. If you are evacuating, you need a plan. Where will you go? What will you take? Someone outside the area should know your plan. If you have nowhere to go, shelters open prior to a storm. Shelters are neither comfortable nor convenient. They are areas of last refuge and you must bring all your own supplies including bedding, medications and convenience items. If you have special needs or pets, you need to pre-register with the special needs or pet shelters now. Stay Connected: The City of Plantation provides several communication outlets designed to keep you informed of all emergency information related to Plantation residents. A list of information channels are available on our website. Summertime is fun time in Florida. We should enjoy it without worrying about storms. A little pre-season preparation and planning will make all the difference. Don’t wait for a “Watch” or “Warning” to be posted to begin your preparations. Sincerely, Don Todd Fire Chief For more details and safety tips on how to prepare, visit our website at www.Plantation.org or visit the FEMA preparedness website at www.Ready.gov. and follow us on Facebook.com/City of Plantation Fire Department.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Choosing the Right Contraception BY ADRIAN ROZNOWSKI M.D., F.A.C.O.G. OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY
W
hile delivering babies is one of my passions and a significant portion of my job, pregnancy prevention is just as important. It is not uncommon to spend just as much time with a patient reviewing contraceptive options as I would when planning a pregnancy. Today’s patients are educated, well read on medical education, and understand that their options are diverse. The route, timing, duration, return to fertility, risks and benefits are all factors that should be taken into consideration when choosing the appropriate birth control. The most common birth control is the contraceptive pill. Today’s pills offer a relatively low dose of hormones compared to pills of previous generations. The pill is the shortest acting contraception and usually contains some form of estrogen and progesterone. The exception is the Mini Pill which contains only progesterone and is limited to the postpartum period. It is hypothesized that this pill does not limit breast milk production and is safe to initiate 6 weeks after delivery. Birth control pills can be started during the menstrual cycle or after a negative pregnancy test. While the pills are not indicated during pregnancy for obvious reasons, studies on women who were pregnant and taking the pills did not show any adverse effects. The patch and the vaginal insert such as the NuvaRing ® are two other forms of short-acting birth control with similar efficacy profiles as the birth control. Depo-Provera is an intermediate- acting birth control. It is injected once every three months and should not be used longer than two years due to the risk of bone loss. The return to fertility is also the longest out of all reversible forms of birth control and can take up to 6 months. Intrauterine devices and the Nexplanon ®, which is a tiny rod implanted in the arm, make up long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). These are placed by your gynecologist during a 5-minute simple office procedure and removal is easy as well. They usually contain progesterone only. However, the copper IUD does not contain any hormones at all. The risks are minimal and overall studies have indicated that they are tolerated well by 99 out of 100 patients on average. The procedure risks from implanting these devices are minimal with studies showing a 1/100 to 1/10,000 possibility for an adverse outcome. Irreversible forms of birth control involve tying, cutting or removing the fallopian tubes altogether. These minor surgeries can be performed in an outpatient setting or right after delivery. Recent studies have shown that the fallopian tubes may cause up to half of the ovarian cancer cases, so removing the fallopian tubes is becoming the most accepted form of irreversible contraception. Choosing the right form of birth control is an individualized decision. After going over your history and performing a physical exam your doctor will suggest the right form of contraception with you. The right form of contraception is time specific and will change as you change. Some important issues to discuss are personal or family history of blood clots, personal punctuality when taking medications, and the timeline for future pregnancies. Dr. Adrian Roznowski is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The multi-lingual physician specializes in high-risk pregnancy care, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, preventative care, and 3D imaging services, and also treats a variety of conditions such as diabetes in pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, multi-fetal gestations, and more. He has privileges at Plantation General Hospital located at 401 NW 42nd Avenue, Plantation, 33317. For more information, please visit www.plantationgeneral.com. One day three years ago we took the kids to the Broward County Humane Society to “just look” and we all just fell in love. This is Bruno and he is a Lab & Great Dane mix. Bruno loves all squeaky toys , likes to bury bones and hates fire works and thunder. He also loves to snuggle with the family, and we really don’t mind that he is 70 lbs. Bruno was last seen lounging in the sun enjoying a dogs life.

The City of Plantation Parks and Recreation and Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA) held a youth fishing clinic at Plantation Central Park. The children had the opportunity to pick up some new fishing skills and make new friends.
IT’S STILL ROCK & ROLL TO ME
Mr. Nice Guy took the stage and Plantation residents Ruth and Jack Becker took a seat on the lawn on a gorgeous South Florida evening as they enjoyed a “date night” at Central Park for the last concert in the “Rock the Park” series.
FAST AND FURIOUS
Supporters of the City of Plantation’s scholarship fund came out bright and early to participate in the annual 5K for Kids. The event raises money for the Parks & Recreation scholarship fund which provides a safe and enjoyable summer experience for those children whose parents are unable to afford the cost of the City’s recreation programs.
