From the flu to chest pains – Cleveland Clinic Florida offers world-class care for all of your medical needs Know the best place to go in an emergency situation If your elderly father fell and appeared to have a broken arm, you’d most likely take him to the nearest emergency room. But what if your spouse developed an itchy leg rash overnight? Or you came down with a stomach bug? Some situations are clear-cut emergencies, while others are not. It can sometimes be tough to know the best place to go for medical help in an urgent situation. Here’s a guide:
“Our Express Care Clinics provide access to Cleveland Clinic Florida’s board-certified physicians, as well as other healthcare providers for non-life-threatening urgent medical needs,” says Frank Eidelman, MD, Director of the Center for Medical Specialties and Chairman of the Department of Allergy and Immunology at Cleveland Clinic Florida. “They are convenient and cost-effective alternatives to the emergency room where we can expertly and efficiently diagnose and treat a host of injuries and illnesses requiring urgent attention.”
Emergency Rooms Hospital emergency rooms will treat all injuries, but they are the best place to go for serious injuries or life-threatening medical situations. Some examples of reasons for which you should go to a hospital emergency room (ER) include: • Chest pain and/or shortness of breath • Stroke symptoms • Uncontrolled or excessive bleeding and wounds needing stitches • Broken bones and head injuries • Severe burns • Poisoning • Suicidal feelings • Accidents (car crashes, falls)
Should you drive to the hospital or call 911 for an ambulance? An ambulance is the quickest and safest way to go to the ER for lifethreatening injuries or illnesses. The paramedics on board can administer life-saving treatment and determine the best hospital to treat the injuries.
Cleveland Clinic Florida Expands its Emergency Services Department
Express Care Locations Serving South Florida Cleveland Clinic Florida has Express Care locations to serve you in Weston, Parkland, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington. Visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ExpressCare for more information.
Express Care Online® For some health concerns, you may see a healthcare provider live without even leaving your house by using your smartphone, tablet or computer. You may receive a diagnosis and a prescription, if appropriate. Express Care Online® may be utilized for some conditions, including the following: • Seasonal allergies; bronchitis; cold, cough and flu symptoms; sinus infections • Back strains • Rashes • Painful urination • Acute vaginitis
In October 2018, Cleveland Clinic Florida opened a new hospital tower and expanded emergency services department at its Weston medical campus at 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd. With 42 emergency bays and the addition of 50 beds and a walk-in center, the department will be able to serve an expected 70,000 patients annually with continued timely high-quality emergency care.
Express Care Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Express Care Clinics, similar to walk-in clinics, handle less serious non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries that need treatment within 24 hours (not immediately). Like ERs, they do not require an appointment, but wait times are generally shorter. And, unlike other walk-in clinics, a trip to a Cleveland Clinic Florida Express Care Clinic will cost the same as an appointment with your primary care doctor. Some conditions for which you should go to an Express Care Clinic include: • Sprains and minor injuries • Eye or sinus infections; cold, cough and flu symptoms • Minor cuts, burns, rashes and skin injuries not requiring stitches • Urinary tract and sexually transmitted infections • Insect bites and stings
Download the Cleveland Clinic Express Care Online® app to connect with a doctor. Visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ECO
Primary Care For any new health concerns that don’t require immediate attention, a primary care provider (PCP) can help. Most Cleveland Clinic Florida PCPs offer same-day appointments. In addition to helping when a medical issue arises, PCPs are partners in their patients’ day-to-day health and wellness. By knowing a patient’s overall health and personal and family medical histories, PCPs can help patients address multiple healthcare needs and navigate the healthcare system. To make an appointment with a Cleveland Clinic Florida PCP, call 800.639.DOCTOR or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/Appointment.

Imagine Life WITHOUT PAIN
PUBLISHERS’ PAGE
A Little Turbulence on Your Flight?
W
e love to travel. In fact, we fly to exotic and not-so-exotic locations, both close to home and around the world, on a fairly regular basis. Despite our love of travel, Christy is not a fan of bumpy flights. For her, a little bit of turbulence will create enough anxiety to set flight attendants off for a glass or two of wine! This makes us all the more thankful for the brave men and women who routinely fly into the world’s most turbulent skies. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), along with the U.S. Air Force, maintain a fleet of aircraft known as the “hurricane hunters.” These modified warplanes routinely fly in the opposite direction of rational human beings to collect data as hurricanes approach populated areas. A typical mission keeps the aircrew off the ground for 11 hours. That is about the time it would take to fly from Miami to Moscow! Imagine the roller coaster ride these dedicated public servants are on flying through a hurricane. The aircraft used for these incredibly important missions are modified C-130 cargo planes and P-3 Orion submarine hunters. Both were chosen because of incredibly reliable service records and the fact that they are slow. Fast, high-altitude jets are not very useful for collecting atmospheric condition data; however, slow propellerdriven planes are perfect. Unless, you have motion sickness. The planes use a number of radars, instruments and “drop” devices to collect a myriad of data. These data are uploaded, in near real-time, to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Forecasts and hurricane track projections using Hurricane Hunter data are as much as 30% more accurate than just satellite and radar projections. So, the next time your flight is a little bit bumpy and the captain turns on the fasten seatbelt sign, be thankful for that Hurricane Hunter flight crew of six, flying 10,000 feet above a stormy sea in winds that would knock over an apartment building! We know we are. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Among the many themed dinners, luncheons, and other fundraisers, the group was searching for a different one, so the idea for this event came from PAWC Vice President Amy Rielly. The local butterflies were bred by the ambitious VP who also happens to be a Florida Master Gardener.
From L to R: Joan Khan. Arlene Haywood. Amy Rielly. Angelea Buelvas. Linda Brent. Bridget Wilson
“I graduated from UF Master Gardener Program last year and started to share my butterfly garden and the eight different butterflies I breed. I have been educating the public on how to plant a backyard butterfly garden. Planting the correct host and nectar plant will bring in the pollinators and help the environment,” exclaimed Rielly. “If you plant it, they will come.” Native Americans view the butterfly as a symbol of change, joy, and color, so it made perfect sense for the non-profit organization to include this type of festive event to their long list of charitable contributions that change people’s lives and add joy and color to the community.
The “Spring Butterfly Release” raised funds to provide services for children and families in the community. Over one hundred people came out to support the cause including Plantation Mayor Lynn Stoner, Michael Taussig, President of Plantation Fireman Association, and Broward School Superintendent Robert Runcie. Besides releasing nature’s magical creatures, purchasing raffles tickets, and enjoying an incredible international buffet luncheon, attendees were able to see the many life stages of Broward County butterfly species displayed to show the benefits of a backyard pollinator garden. “My duty as a Florida Master Gardener is to reach out the community and share what Davie UF Extension provides for free of charge. GFWC Plantation Acres Women’s Club once again provided our city with an outstanding and successful fundraiser to support the club’s community projects under the leadership of myself, Linda Buchannan Brent, Joan Khan, Angela Buelvas, Dr. Arlene Haywood, and Bridget Wilson,” added Rielly. “It was deemed one of our most successful spring fundraisers to date.” For more information about the GFWC Plantation Acres Women’s Club please visit www.PAWCFlorida.org.

Recreate, Rediscover, and Rehabilitate – 5th Annual Adaptive Sports Expo Was a Hit BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
pril was National Adaptive Sports Month, and to kick-off, the celebration Memorial Regional Hospital South hosted the “5th Annual Adaptive Sports and Recreation Expo” at Markham Park. The event was free and open to the public, and gave participants of all ages, and all abilities with disabilities a way to explore a variety of sports and recreational activities beneficial to the physical and mental health of those who have suffered strokes, lost use of limbs or are coping with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Hundreds of disabled who attended had a chance to discover an array of adaptive sports including wheelchair basketball, waterskiing, sailing, fishing, scuba diving, and remote-control airplanes at the 666-acre Sunrise Park. The inspirational event had those who thought they could no longer do what they love to rediscover their passion for sports. For Lisa Sandelon, 50, who was born with spina bifida, water skiing was a new adventure that she will never forget. “It was truly inspiring to be on the water
like that,” she said. “I was concerned at first but when I finally got out on the water, it was freedom.” Sandelon is no stranger to sports. Regardless of her condition, she has been active all of her life. She was a marathon runner until a little over 10 years ago when her kidneys started to fail her, and complications began to multiply. She is wheelchair dependent, but it is not a limitation to her. “This expo as truly been a great opportunity. I am hooked on waterskiing now.” “You can’t imagine what it is like for someone who has limited mobility or who is visually impaired to be able to sail when they have never been able to try it,” said Kristen Ross of Youth Environmental Alliance based locally. “It provides such a sense of freedom. The Adaptive Sports and Recreation Expo of this kind provides that access that links people with the activities.” The Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program is offered through the Memorial Rehabilitation Institute located at Memorial Regional Hospital South in Hollywood. The program encourages former patients from the rehabilitation program and members of the community with physical disabilities to participate in a wide variety of adaptive sports and activities. The classes and activities are beneficial to the physical and mental health of those who have suffered strokes, lost the use of limbs or are coping with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. The programs are all free to the public. Recently, the program began a fitness class which is held every Friday from 2:00 pm-3:00 pm at Memorial Regional Hospital Fitness Center in Hollywood. For more information about the Adaptive Sports Program and Memorial Rehabilitation Institute, call Ray Shipman at 954-518-5573 or email rshipman@mhs.net.

vein and laser expert. She, and her team, have successfully performed tens of thousands of vein and laser procedures. She has lectured across the county, even developing her own procedures and techniques. Fox Vein and Laser Experts have received numerous awards, including the 2019 Best of Weston and the 2018 Our City Readers’ Choice awards. Dr. Fox has also been featured on American and Latin America television programs as a vein expert. She has been practicing medicine for more than 20 years. We sat down with Dr. Fox to learn more about the practice. Tell us about your practice. We are a premier vein and laser treatment center in Broward County, with locations in Pembroke Pines and Hollywood. We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of venous disease as well as offering several minimally invasive treatments, using our state-of-the-art laser equipment, to treat other issues. We are one of the only providers in South Florida with the PicoWay® laser. This allow us to remove unwanted
tattoos and skin discolorations more effectively and more quickly than other methods. With tens of thousands of successful procedures, we have the experience to remove or reduce spider and varicose veins. We help our patients reduce swelling, aching and discomfort. Our medical team evaluates each patient’s individual condition and helps them determine which treatment is right for them. We accept most medical insurance plans for medically necessary procedures and offer payment options for cosmetic procedures. What makes your practice different Before from others? We are experienced experts in treating vascular disease and skin treatments. In fact, Fox Vein and Laser Experts is a training facility for vein procedures. I have After successfully taught physicians and medical personnel in the treatment of venous disease and the use of lasers for over a decade. I was one of the first doctors in the country to perform endovenous laser ablation and I have performed thousands of successful endogenous laser ablations for over a decade. I was the first physician in Broward County to perform the ClariVein® procedure and one of the first in the U.S. to offer this treatment. In short, we are very experienced at what we do. Our patients’ health and the success of the procedure are our priority.
What is Vein Disease? Vein disease is a disorder that occurs when vein valves stop functioning correctly. Normally, the vein valves keep blood moving back toward the heart. When the valves stop functioning properly, some blood will drip slowly downward, causing it to collect in the legs and ankles. Over time, this can lead to spider veins, varicose veins, phlebitis, blood clots and changes in the skin. According to studies, more than ¼ of American adults have some form of venous disease in their legs. Left untreated, you may notice more discolored veins in your legs, or your ankles becoming swollen and turning brown or blue. If you are noticing any of these symptoms, we encourage you to call our office for a consultation. Do You offer Hair Removal? Yes! In addition to being an effective tool for treating spider veins and sunspots, our GentleMax Pro® laser is incredibly effective at hair removal. Laser hair removal is one of the most convenient and long-lasting ways to eliminate unwanted hair. This machine delivers direct bursts of laser energy to the skin, passing through its uppermost layers and targeting follicles. As the follicles absorb this energy, they will rupture. After the follicle has ruptured, it is no longer able to produce hair. Over a series of treatments, all of the follicles in an area will be ruptured, halting hair growth and leaving the surface of the skin smooth and hair-free. The GentleMax Pro® laser is so quick and effective, it decreases the number of treatments patients need. Typically, between four and six sessions over a 12-month period are necessary to achieve dramatic hair loss results.
Treatment of Procedures You mentioned tattoo removal, tell us more. Tattoos can be a fun, creative way for people to express themselves. However, sometimes, people regret getting these permanent works of art – that’s why we’re proud to offer our patients access to the gold standard of laser tattoo remove technology – The PicoWay® Laser. Older tattoo removal treatments tend to cause patients extreme discomfort, are often risky for people with darker skin tones and commonly are not as effective on colorful or dark tattoos.
Before
After
PicoWay® tattoo removal can remove tattoos with a wide variety of pigments and on patients of all skin types, faster, more effectively and with less pain than traditional tattoo removal methods. Older laser treatments use concentrated laser energy delivered in a consistent beam to break up tattoo pigmentation. These treatments can be somewhat effective in breaking up tattoos but often small bits of pigmentation are left behind. The treatments can also be quite difficult for some patients to tolerate. The PicoWay® laser uses short bursts of laser energy to break up pigmentation. These short bursts are more effective and less
painful than traditional laser treatments. Can PicoWay® be used for scar removal as well? Yes, the PicoWay® laser is also quite effective at removing or reducing scars. Because the laser uses short, intense bursts of light, treatment times are significantly shorter than other laser-based scar revision procedures. Patients typically experience little to no downtime following a treatment session as well. What other procedures to you offer? We now offer the Vivace™ Microneedle treatment. This, FDA approved, minimally invasive treatment stimulates the natural production of collagen and is shown to be effective in alleviating facial wrinkles, fine lines, and tightening and toning the face, neck, hands and body. This procedure is quick, does not hurt and has virtually no recovery time. How can patients make an appointment? Patients can make an appointment at either of our locations by calling 954-627-1045 or by visiting our website www. FoxVeinExperts.com

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
Hurricane Season is Here – Be Prepared BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he 2019 Atlantic hurricane season started on June 1st and runs through November 30th. Early predictions are for an average to slightly-above average season in terms of activity. Experts from Colorado State University’s hurricane research team forecast 13 named storms of which five will become hurricanes and two will become major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger). For comparison, during an average hurricane season there are 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes. While the number of storms predicted this year is close to normal, the overall activity – based on the intensity of storms and their energy – is expected to be slightly below average. “This year, we think that there will be a few less tropical storms and lower numbers in hurricanes, but again, the old saying is ‘it only takes one’,” cautions AccuWeather Atlantic Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski. That being said, now is the time to start preparing your family and your home for hurricane season. The first thing you should do is put together your hurricane supply kit, stocked with all the essentials you will need to provide for your family during and following a storm. Be sure to include flashlights and lanterns with extra batteries, first

aid supplies, cash, food and water, and copies of all critical documents. You should also create a family emergency communication plan; know how to get in touch with each other, especially if phone or internet service is knocked out. Register for text and/or email alerts for emergency notifications.
Prepare your home by trimming tree branches and limbs and securing and clearing rain gutters and downspouts. Now is also the time to make sure your hurricane shutters are in proper working order. The beginning of hurricane season is also a good time to familiarize yourself with the terminology. It’s important that you understand exactly what the meteorologists and newscasters are saying and what that means. Here are some of the most common terms as defined by the National Hurricane Center: Tropical Cyclone – an organized rotating system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or subtropical waters and has a closed lowlevel circulation Tropical Storm – a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph Hurricane – a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher; a major hurricane is when winds are 111 mph or higher Hurricane Warning – hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected in an area; issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset Hurricane Watch – hurricane conditions are possible; issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset

What To Do When A Storm Approaches BY STACEY BOMSER
T
wo years ago, Hurricane Irma set her sights on South Florida. While we were fortunate and escaped the brunt of her powerful strength, that scare was enough to remind us all of how important it is to be ready for hurricane season. Here are some helpful tips on what you need to know to be prepared before, during and after a storm. As the storm approaches Start preparing your home before the storm gets near. That means covering windows and doors with hurricane shutters and bringing in outdoor furniture, garbage cans, and anything else that is not tied down and could become airborne. Charge your cell phone and back-up batteries in case you lose power. Withdraw cash from the bank, as ATM’s will not work in a power outage. Gas up your car and buy extra gas if needed to fuel generators or gas-
powered tools. Fill aluminum or plastic containers with drinking water; you need enough for one gallon per person per day for at least three days. In addition, fill pre-sanitized sinks and tubs with water for bathing and flushing toilets. Turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary; this will help keep food safe longer if the power goes out. During the storm Monitor your radio or television for weather updates and instructions from public safety officials. Also check emails and social media sources for emergency notifications. Stay inside, preferably in an interior room with no windows. If the power goes out, use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns; do not use candles or kerosene lamps during the storm. Do not go outside during the eye of the storm – it may appear calm but hurricane-force winds will resume shortly. This is NOT the time to clean-up around the house. After the hurricane Listen to local officials for updates and instructions; do not go outside until authorities say it is safe. Many
disaster-related injuries occur in the aftermath of the storm – watch out for debris and downed power lines. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock a person down and fast-moving water can sweep a car away. In addition, flood water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines. It could also hide dangerous debris. Once it is safe to walk around outside your home, photograph any damage to the structure or property to assist in filing an insurance claim. Don’t forget to check-in with family and friends to make sure everyone is safe.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
What’s In Your Bag?
A
s we enter hurricane season, it’s essential that every family have a fully-stocked emergency supply kit. After a hurricane, or other emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days until aid can arrive. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends that everyone have enough food, water and necessities to last for three to five days. A basic emergency supply kit should contain one gallon of water per person per day to use for drinking and sanita-
tion. You should also have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for each person, along with a can opener. That includes baby formula and baby food. You also want to include mess kits or paper goods and plastic eating utensils. Every emergency kit should have a battery-powered or hand crank radio, preferably a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries. Flashlights and lanterns with extra batteries are also essential. Other necessities include a first aid kit, whistle to signal for help, and household cleaning supplies including garbage bags. You may need to go several days without running water, so it’s good to stock moist towelettes along with other personal hygiene items. Be sure to include a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities and make sure you

have charcoal or propane for the grill. While that’s what you need for a basic hurricane supply kit, FEMA does have a list of extra items you should consider adding. Be sure to include eyeglasses and any prescription medication you or someone in the family needs. If you have a baby, your kit should include baby care items such as disposable diapers and wipes. Don’t forget to prepare for your pet’s care as well with pet food and extra water. It’s a good idea to include sleeping bags or blankets and pillows for each member of the family. Your kit should also contain a change of clothing for
every member of the family, including sturdy shoes as there may be a lot of debris. Emergency kits should also include an extra set of car keys, cash because ATM’s and credit card devices might not work without power, and books, games, puzzles and other activities to keep entertained if there is no TV or internet. Lastly, make sure to gather all important documents in waterproof containers. This includes emergency contact numbers, insurance policies (home, auto, life, etc.), medical records, bank account numbers, etc. FEMA recommends you store items in airtight plastic bags and put the entire hurricane supply kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag. n For more tips on what to include in a hurricane supply kit visit www. ready.gov/build-a-kit.

Our Savior Lutheran School Students “DIG” Learning in the Community BY BEVERLY PERKINS
L
earning doesn’t just happen inside the classroom, but outside as well at Our Savior Lutheran School. The Plantation private school wanted to celebrate Earth Day by doing something that would be beneficial to the community, so Atlanta Boeri, a teacher at the school reached out to The City of Plantation Parks & Recreation Department for suggestions. Together, they decided on a project that was close to school and would be appreciated by the students, parents, and staff. Matt Thompson, Superintendent of the Parks,
began coordinating a planting project at Liberty Tree Park with Boeri and Parks Maintenance Supervisor Michael Ambrosio. Prior to the big day, the Parks’ staff prepared the area and ordered the materials needed to give the Liberty Tree Park signage a much-needed facelift. He then gave direction and assisted the middle school-aged students on-site the day of the event. “The Liberty Tree Park sign was chosen due to its close proximity to the school. It was definitely in need of some renovation, and we felt this was the perfect location for the students to see their work continue to grow every day on their way to school,” exclaimed Thompson. “This was also a good opportunity for the Parks & Recreation staff to show their strengths and knowledge, and for the students to walk away with a new understanding and knowledge on a project of this kind.” A total of thirty-nine students, four teachers, and five Parks & Recreation staff members were involved in the project. Around 200 plants were used including Green Island Ficus, Trinettes (variegated arbicola), Copperleaf’s, and Mammy Crotons. Instead of a simple planting exercise, City staff used this opportunity to turn the event into a hands-on educational seminar. Before plant-
ing, the staff consisting of Michael Ambrosio, Ryan Bates (Maintenance Foreman), Christopher Wallett (Maintenance Worker 1), Ray Christenson (Maintenance Worker 1) and Nick Greve (Maintenance Worker 1) explained to the students what plants were being used, how they grew, and why they were chosen for the location. The staff also went over the proper ways to plant and stake the two medium sized Crape Myrtles that were planted and how to tie the proper knots needed to stake the trees down. “Soon after explaining the required tasks necessary to complete the project, the students eagerly took the various tasks into their own hands, literally! Many compliments were given to the staff members from both the students and volunteers during and after the project’s completion. The Parks and Recreation Department would like to thank Linda Root, Principal of Our Savior Lutheran Middle School, Atlanta Boeri and the other teachers and parents for volunteering with us to make this project come to life,” added Thompson.

ASK THE EXPERT
Flat Feet in Children and Adults BY DR. JOHN GOODNER
T
he arch of a person’s foot is the main supporting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops. CAUSES: Flatfeet include loose ligaments in the arch. Trauma to tendons or bone abnormalities can cause the foot to flatten. Tight calf muscles can severely aggravate the condition. Arthritis in the foot or ankle (rheumatoid or psoriatic) can be a predisposing factor in flatfeet. SYMPTOMS: Pain usually in the arch, ankles and legs aggravated by standing and walking is a symptom. Premature fatigue during any type of activity frequently occurs. Cramping in the legs, especially at night, is common. In children, a general lack of interest in participating in sports may also be seen. SIGNS: A flat arch when standing or the foot excessively points to the outside especially during gait. Bulging of the bones on the inside of the ankle and foot are usually seen. Flatfeet are usually associated with knock-knees and abnormal shoe wear. RELATED PROBLEMS: Back and knee problems are seen, especially in children and men. Hammertoes, heel spurs and bunions are often associated with
flatfeet as a person ages. Arthritis in the foot, ankle, knees, hips and back is also common with aging. Inactivity, which can cause weight gain and poor cardiovascular fitness may also result. TREATMENT: The first step is identifying the area of pain and underlying cause as early as possible. Other treatments include: wearing proper shoe gear and custom molded orthotics to support the foot and the entire extremity; physical therapy to improve flexibility, strength, balance and coordination; stretching of the calf muscles in a cast to diminish excessive strain on the arch and improve flexibility; and surgery to correct the deformity and return the child or adult to full function. Dr. John Goodner is a Board Qualified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in sports medicine foot and ankle injuries, foot and ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity trauma, and lower extremity deformities in infants, children, teens and adults. Tail-Wagging Art Exhibit Raises Funds to Support Retired K9 Officers BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or the second year, American Heritage School partnered with the community to host “A K9 Cause, An Evening of Art”. The muchanticipated event, inspired by a young fourth-grade student last year, continued again this year. Real retired K9 Officers of Broward County were the inspiration for the various works of art created by local students, teachers, and area artists at the annual exhibit in an effort to raise funds for the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County Retired K9 Officer Healthcare Fund (RK9OHF). “A K9 Cause allows us to reach out to the community to do good things with the art we create. It lets the community see what we do and gives the students a taste of recognition for their many hours of dedication to their art,” explained Susan Convery, Teacher and National Art Honor Society Sponsor.
Active K9 Officers are trained to work in situations that require stamina, physical agility and quick reaction time. They are fully accredited officers that serve our community and bear the honor of their office during service and in death. However, in retirement, these officers are no longer financially supported by the department they served. Their partners often voluntarily ‘adopt’ these animals for $1 to live out their retirement in comfort. Inspired by a career of caring for active K9 Officers in South Florida, local veterinarian Dr. Jim Herrington came to believe that even in retirement the healthcare costs of these service animals should be supported. It was this belief that motivated him and his team at VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital to create the Retired K9 Officer’s Healthcare Fund in partnership with the Sheriff
Foundation of Broward County. “I have cared for K9 Officers throughout South Florida in every stage of their career. Supporting the Retired K9 Officer Healthcare Fund is our way to continue to give back to these dedicated Officers for years to come,” stated Jim Herrington, DVM, Medical Director VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital. This year’s exhibit featured paintings, drawings, ceramics, and photography which raised $37,000 in total which will go a long way to further give back. One hundred percent of the money generated from this event supports the retired K9 Officers that gave a lifetime of service to our community. “It is an honor for us to raise money for these dogs as a way of repaying them for the hard work they do to protect us,” said Laura Mellado, National Art Honor Society Club President.

A “Paws”itive Learning Experience BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he most anticipated event of the year for many Tropical and Peters Elementary second grade students took place as the 2018-2019 school year wrapped. The “3rd Annual Pawsitive Pen Pal Program” concluded with a pen pal meeting. This year the “Meet and Greet” was hosted by Tropical Elementary School. The successful program was the creation of Barbara Clair Kettler, a retired teacher and member of Share-A-Pet. She would bring her beloved pet therapy dog Chessie to Tropical Elementary to help students communicate better while learning to read and write. The toy poodle’s claim to fame is that she would write letters to the students, listen to them read, and give moral support in the process.
28 JUNE 2019 | OUR CITY PLANTATION | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
Kettler saw the improvement in the students’ abilities and shared her findings with colleagues Joan Zucker from Tropical Elementary and Iris Friedman at Peters Elementary. Together they started the pen pal project for their second graders at both schools. The excited second-grade students started writing to each other at the beginning of the school year and have been exchanging letters ever since. The pet therapy teams would pick up and deliver the cards and letters to the respective schools on a regular basis. The students would then read their letters to their classes and the therapy teams when they visited each week. “I am so very proud that the Pen Pal Program has taken off from the initial pairing of two teachers who had taught together at Peters Elementary. This was the third year, and we had expanded into six classes with six teachers from each school participating,” explained Barbara Clair Kettler. Two busloads of Peters’ students went to Tropical Elementary where they were greeted by Principal Erik Anderson and Assistant Principal, Terie Miranda. The Interim Principal of Peters, Suzanne Deutsch, was also present. The classes then broke up to either return to the classrooms with their pen pals, take a tour of the school together, and then play kickball, or Legos ® before returning to the classrooms where they
exchanged cards, worked together on creating their own personalized photo frames, and had a pizza party with lots of snacks while they watch movies. Photos of each pen pal duo along with their therapy dog were taken and developed by volunteer mothers and passed out to the students before they parted ways. “It was so wonderful to see the children hugging each other as they said goodbye and promising to keep in touch. Right now, before school ends, the last letters and telephone numbers are being exchanged, to hopefully keep these students in touch with one another during the summer break,” added Barbara Clair Kettler.

Plantation Schools Rule
Home Staging vs Interior Design
BY MAYOR LYNN STONER lantation is part of the Broward County Public School system, the nation’s sixth largest school district, and the second largest in the State of Florida. In addition to six public elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools, Plantation is home to several Charter schools, and over 30 private schools (preschool/daycare through grade 12). Plantation is also a short distance from Nova Southeastern University, Florida Atlantic University, Broward College, and McFatter Technical Center, all part of the prestigious South Florida Education Center. Within our schools, students and parents will find specialized instruction designed to serve the needs of each individual student, such as gifted, AP (Advanced Placement), and Honors classes, ESE (Exceptional Student Education) and ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) programs; NASAsanctioned explorer programs; volunteer opportunities; outstanding, nationally recognized educators; and a broad range of extracurricular activities to enhance and enrich your child’s education. Plantation public schools are some of the finest in Broward County. Seminole Middle School’s DECAL program, the International Baccalaureate Middle Years program at Plantation Middle, the International Baccalaureate at Plantation High School, and the Environmental and Everglades Restoration programs at South Plantation High School present outstanding scholarly opportunities for Plantation students. A variety of academic, athletic, artistic, technology, and cultural programs are offered at Central Park, Mirror Lake, Peters, Plantation, Plantation Park and Tropical Elementary schools. I recently met with fourth grade students from Central Park Elementary as part of “My City Government” week. They had a chance to hear firsthand, what it’s like to run a City the size of Plantation, and find out some of the rewards, and challenges, of the job.
BY NEVINE GROULX, ETHNICA DESIGNS t’s a common misconception that “Home Staging” and “Interior Decorating” are one and the same. While home staging is a type of design, it’s really different from interior decorating. Essentially home staging is temporary and generally done to sell a house or find new tenants for a rental property. Whereas interior decorating is for when a house is purchased, and the buyer wants to make it their home with décor to their liking. Home staging is all about illusion, it is the art of making a house attractive to potential buyers. When staging a home, it looks bigger, warmer, cleaner and brighter. As a seller the first thing before hiring a realtor is to hire an interior designer who can stage your home to be ready to show on the market. Staging allows you to present the house in its best light and it looks encouraging to prospective buyers so they can imagine themselves living there. Staging can also help increase the sales price and staged homes typically sell faster than unstaged homes.
P
“Name some of the decisions you make that affect residents’ lives.” ~ Students “Almost everything I do on a day to day basis has some effect on residents’ lives. Most important is the budget. I work with Directors to set the budget, which determines how much is spent and on what. I present my final draft to City Council in September, and they vote to approve it.” ~ Mayor Stoner Take a good look at Plantation schools. More than ever before, students and their parents will find a comprehensive and complete suite of services available to enrich and compliment your child’s education. AFTER
BEFORE
Home staging process involves: ▸▸ Decluttering and depersonalizing items to create an appeal that opens buyers’ imagination. ▸▸ Rearranging or supplementing existing furniture and decor to make house up to date and on trend. ▸▸ Evaluating which repairs need to be made to improve the appeal. ▸▸ Removing personal items as family pictures to create a more generic space that buyers could imagine living in. Another important aspect of home staging is not forgetting the exterior of the home. The exterior is the first impression a buyer gets before entering a house because it will be on every app and website. So, start by power washing, clean windows, mow the lawn, plant flowers, put a welcome mat, and potted plants on the front porch, and maybe include outdoor furniture if possible. From the buyer’s point of view, occupied homes are someone else’s taste with accumulated mementos. Yet, an empty house is hard to imagine as a new home. Home staging is about making a home appeal to the largest possible audience of potential buyers. Staging is more important than ever right now because of the competitive real estate market. Your home will definitely be competing with other homes that have already been staged. So, isn’t it better to spend a few thousands of dollars on home stager than to lower your asking price tens of thousands to get it sold? MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF
Commit to Distraction-Free Driving BY DON TODD, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF
Distracted drivers cause thousands of deaths and injuries worldwide. Distracted driving is any activity that takes the drivers’ attention off the road, even for a second. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety. This includes talking or texting on a cellphone, eating, talking to people in your vehicle, using a navigation system or basically, anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving. When your focus leaves the road, things happen quickly and often have devastating and irreversible consequences. Texting is the most alarming distraction. Text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), driving a vehicle while texting is six (6) times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. Sending or reading a text message takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your

eyes closed. According to MIT Neuroscientist Earl Miller, while switching from task to task, you think that you’re actually paying attention to everything around you at the same time. But, you’re not, you’re really toggling between tasks at amazing speeds. “For the most part, we simply can’t focus on more than one thing at a time. You’re not paying attention to one or two things simultaneously but switching between them very rapidly. There are several reasons the brain has to switch among tasks. One is that similar tasks compete to use the same part of the brain,” stated the renowned neuroscientist. We need to lead by example, by never driving distracted. It is up to drivers to pledge to end distracted
driving and incorporate strategies into their daily lives to combat the issue. Some strategies include; turning the volume of your phone to silent, keeping your phone out of sight and reach, and stopping all non-essential multi-tasking. As the number of people killed in distraction-affected crashes increases, we all need to play a part in the fight to save lives by ending distracted driving. The more people who commit to distraction-free driving, the more likely that higher expectations and a precedent will be set for others to follow. The bottom line is that you cannot drive safely unless 100% of your attention is on driving. We can all make a difference!
