Don’t Let Rain Dampen Summer Fun!

S

ummer in South Florida means heat, humidity and lots of rain. According to USClimateData.com, average rainfall in Broward County almost triples during the summer months. In fact, we average almost nine inches of rain each month. Lucky for us, there are plenty of things to do when Mother Nature does not cooperate. There are museums and art galleries for every interest, from paintings by talented local artists at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines to the dynamic and bright CultureScapes at Young At Art Museum in Davie. Children universally love Fort Lauderdale’s hands-on Museum of Discovery and Science, while adults may prefer the Miami Auto Museum at the Dezer Collection, which offers “the largest eclectic transportation collection” in the world, or the Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum, which provides a look back in automotive time. Rainy days are the perfect time to explore new interests. Try a yoga or spin class, jump around at an indoor trampoline park, or learn how to blow glass at Hollywood Hot Glass on Young Circle. The possibilities are endless. So, next time the weather puts a damper on your outdoor plans, explore all the fun and interesting indoor options available to us. Sincerely,

aurice Morrison, a Plantation native, a Plantation High School graduate and a current Florida Atlantic University (FAU) student, recently fought in the Xtreme Fighting Nation Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight in late spring. The business major won via a rear naked choke hold submission in his debut MMA fight last year, but unfortunately he lost this year’s match. However, the loss won’t stop this enthusiastic fighter. Morrison is ranked 153rd of 196 in the active Florida Amateur Featherweights and 591st of 709 in the active US Southeast Amateur Featherweights. He is also a RAWKT MMA cage fighter with a 1-1 record and plans to fight again. The 20-year-old MMA fighter was introduced and taught martial arts by his father at the young age of nine. He loved it so much that he then began his training at the John Wai Kung Fu Academy in Plantation. Morrison currently holds a Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu black belt, and has been practicing Kung Fu, Sanshou, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Morrison had been training in martial arts for such a long time that he wanted to test himself and all that he learned. Xtreme Fighting was naturally the next step to execute these skills in a real situation. He soon became hooked as he loved the

challenge and the emotions that accompanied it. In order to prepare for a fight, he needs to train for 3-4 hours daily which includes ground fighting, stand-up fighting, and strength and conditioning along with cardio. The dedicated sophomore returns home each day after his college classes to teach children, ages 3-14, at the academy and also teaches Kung Fu and fighting classes for adults. “All the instructors at the academy molded me into the martial artist and man I am today,” said the Morrison. “They are more than just coaches to me, they are my family.” Morrison hopes to achieve many things, but he would love to become a world champion in fighting and own his own martial arts school one day. However, his real dream is to make martial arts the biggest sport in the world so it could help change people’s lives like it changed his. “My message to other aspiring athletes would be to always follow your passion no matter how hard it is,” added Morrison. “Way too many times people have a passion for a sport but stop because it is too hard, but champions are the ones who push past that and work hard to achieve their goals.”

our South Florida residents, including Ron Book of Plantation, and one organization were recently honored with awards from the Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation at the “19th annual Circle of Friends” luncheon at the Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood. Ron Book, Bruce Braffman, Chrystal Felsen, Frank Scholl, and the Children’s Services Council of Broward County were named “Spirit of Healing” award winners. These individuals and the community organization have had a tremendous impact in the worlds of philanthropy and healthcare in South Florida. The Spirit of Healing and Wasie Leadership awards reward professional excellence, community service, commitment, generosity and leadership to the Memorial Healthcare System. “Our award winners are difference makers in the community,” said Stu Siegel, board chair of the Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations. “They have consistently dedicated their efforts to making South Florida a better place.” Ron Book has worked for many years supporting children’s causes, including Lauren’s Kids which he started to prevent childhood sexual abuse after his own daughter was victimized. His dedication as an advocate for children and the causes that serve them have helped so many. “I care about children, whether we’re talking about giving them healthcare, preventing abuse, or strengthening the foster care system,” says Book. “If we don’t stand up for, protect, and provide for our children, we will be defined for decades to come as a community that abandoned its young and allowed them to grow

without the care, love and compassion they needed.” In a life and career distinguished by philanthropy, he has been especially impactful as a founding board member and director emeritus for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation and as chairman of Lauren’s Kids, a non-profit organization that works to prevent childhood sexual abuse through education and awareness. Book, an attorney, has represented the South Broward Hospital District for more than 35 years and works with nonprofits that include the Autism Society of Florida,

Broward Partnership for the Homeless, New Horizons Community Mental Health Center, Best Buddies, and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. “Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is still a community hospital at heart, because no matter who you are, what your color or creed or national origin is, or whatever walk in life you come from – you’re treated the same here. It lives the Spirit of Healing every day, because we are a place of caring,” added Book. V

alencia Cove, a community in Palm Beach, stepped up to the plate to raise funds for the JAFCO (Jewish Adoption & Family Care Options) Children’s Ability Center in Sunrise. They raised an astonishing $45,000 for the Center to provide the children with a new tetherball court at the facility. The court will be used for playtime and therapy for those with developmental disabilities. Members of the Boynton Beach residential community were inspired to raise money for the Center after many of them attended the “In My Shoes Luncheon” last fall. They saw how the center’s programs provide a vital unmet need in South Florida for family enrichment, support and respite care to families raising a child with any developmental disability. Approximately 35 people attended the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony. A luncheon followed with the pinning of the new Godparent. Several even stayed on after the official festivities to play tetherball and officially “dedicate” the court. “I felt a rush of adrenaline when I saw the yellow ribbon on the donor wall. I did not know until that day that we were the first community to take on a naming opportunity. I am proud of all my neighbors and new friends at Valencia Cove and what we accomplished,” said Norlyn Poto, Event Co-Chair and Valencia Cove resident.

f you live in South Florida and have any interest in dance, the odds are pretty good you already know the name. With four Broward locations, including their new Plantation Promenade location opening next month in the Publix Center on the corner of Cleary Boulevard and Nob Hill Road, Dance Theatre has become a permanent and integral part of our community, one fabulous dancer at a time.

Accolades? Of course. Dance Theatre has been awarded the prestigious “Reader’s Choice” and “Best in the West” awards multiple times. Trophies? Thousands. Dance Theatre’s elite team of competitive dancers, DTX, consistently receives top awards and overall high scores at virtually every competition they attend. Testimonials? You bet. Just ask any mother in the carpool line and they’ll tell you that Dance Theatre has been like a home away from home for their children. So what is it that makes this place so special? Why has every community Dance Theatre serves embraced it so vigorously for so long? “My answer is always the same,” says owner and Director Michelle Gerlick. “We build beautiful, safe, clean facilities, hire the best teachers in the business, and treat each child that walks through our doors as if they were our very own.” “Awards are nice, certainly, and our trophies are beautiful, but that’s not what we strive for,” Michelle continues. “We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate. It is incumbent upon us to do it effectively. We train exceptional dancers, yes, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models that are so important to our students as they mature. We work hard, we have passion, and we care deeply about the impact we have on their lives. When a parent tells me their child has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. That is why we do this.” Michelle certainly has the pedigree to run one of the nation’s most successful dance programs. Her mother Joan was a Rockette, June Taylor Dancer, and half of a performance duo, along with her father

Bob, which thrilled audiences the world over working with the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Tony Bennett. Michelle spent nearly every day of her youth inside her parents’ dance school, the Academy of Ballet Arts, practicing and perfecting her craft, and then earned both a degree in Dance from Ohio State University, and a degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern. Her professional credits include performing as a Miami Heat Dancer for the NBA, a “Fly Girl” on Fox Television’s In Living Color, and an NFL Super Bowl Choreographer and Dancer. Michelle has since led her students at Dance Theatre to The Summer Olympics, The Super Bowl, and The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, among countless other extraordinary venues. Still not convinced that Dance Theatre is THE place for your young dancer to train? Consider this...they offer a truly comprehensive program where dancers ages 3 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline including the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, acrobatics, and pointe, as well as specialty classes like strength and flexibility, leaps and turns, etc. In addition, dancers who excel and aspire to become dance professionals may join either their performance company, DTC, which specializes in providing entertainment at amazing venues like Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins games, or their elite competitive group, Team DTX, where they can travel to local, regional and national conventions and hone their skills against the best from other schools. Team DTX has won numerous national titles and choreography awards, and currently boasts the reigning Miss National Onstage America, Chiara Gonzales. For those interested in joining the Dance Theatre family, there are several ways. First, you may call the new Plantation Promenade studio at 954-423-4500 and speak to someone today. Second, you can visit their web-site, www.dancetheatre.net, view the Fall Schedule, and register online at any time by filling out the simple registration form. Finally, if you prefer to register in person, our new Plantation location will be open for registration August 1st – 19th, Monday – Friday 3:00pm – 7:00pm and Saturdays 9:00am – Noon. Better hurry though. Classes fill quickly!

Plantation Football Player Scores Big On & Off the Field BY BEVERLY PERKINS

J

CAN DO KID

ake Goldberg recently graduated from Calvary Christian High School and has been recruited to play football for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Prior to graduating at the top of his class, the Plantation football player and honor student had the opportunity to represent the United States as part of American Football Worldwide (AFW) USA ELITE team. The USA ELITE team was assembled from recommendations and nominations from high school coaches and from the Next College Student Athlete (NCSA) recruiting service. The roster was a true cross-section of the United States with every region and 14 states being represented. Goldberg came to the AFW USA ELITE after a 10-2 season with the Calvary Christian Academy Eagles. Under the direction of head coach Kirk Hoza, Goldberg lined up at long snapper, left tackle and center. He then led the Eagles to the semi-finals of the playoffs. The dedicated lineman ranked as the third best long snapper in the state of Florida and was also rated ninth in all of 1A Florida High School Wrestling heavy weight division. The selected team traveled to Italy for a week of educational touring while they also had the privilege of serving as ambassadors for American football. During the AFW Italian tour, practices took place at the start of each day so the remaining time could be spent visiting, learning, and experiencing the culture of the country.

They were able to take advantage of seeing many iconic historical structures such as the Roman Coliseum and Forum, the piazzas of Rome, Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica as well as the cities of Florence and Milan. The trip culminated with an international game against the national 19U team of Italy where they defeated the Italian U19 National Team 40-0 in Varese, Italy. “Jake was tremendously reliable on our offensive front. When we needed some yards, we knew we could go behind him,” said AFW Head Coach Jim Barnes. “In addition, his long snapping work was very valuable leading to clean mechanics and no breakdowns in the phase. He admirably represented himself, his community, and our country. He will do the same as he moves on to the Air Force Academy.” Aside from the gridiron and wrestling mat, Goldberg had success in the classroom where he completed his high school career as a member of the National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, and an honor roll student with a GPA of 3.87. “I felt honored to be able to play with such a group of talented players. This was like the Olympics for football,” said Jake Goldberg. “The opportunity to represent my country in an international venue and to be an ambassador for the USA & American Football was an unbelievable experience. As a recruit for the United States Air Force Academy, I aspire to continue to proudly represent my country as an officer in the military, as a patriot, and as a football player.”

SCHOOL NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

hat happens when a few teachers, a bunch of students, and a few canines get together? Seven years ago, Barbara Clair Kettler, a retired teacher and member of Share-A-Pet, decided to find out. She created “Pawsitive Reading”, by bringing her pet therapy dog Chessie to second grade classes at Tropical Elementary. The results were so outstanding that the program has extended to Peters Elementary. “Many of our readers are what we call ‘reluctant readers’, and are not comfortable reading out loud, and that is what ‘Pawsitive Reading’ is all about; the dogs never correct and just listen,” says Clair Kettler. “I am a retired elementary school teacher so education and working with children is in my blood.” Clair Kettler developed a partnership with teachers Iris Friedman (Peters Elementary) and Joan Zucker (Tropical Elementary) with the help of Tropical’s former Assistant Principal, Dr. Joyce Krzemienski, who is currently the Principal of Peters. The program has grown from working with just a few students at a time in the hallways to entire classes from Kindergarten through the third grade, so several hundred students can participate. It all began with Chessie, Clair Kettler’s toy poodle, writing letters to the students and then waiting for a response. Since its inception, each of the school’s second grade classes have become pen pals, and the pooch and his human pick up Iris Friedman (Peters), Barbara Clair Kettler, Joan Zucker and deliver their letters. The Share-A-Pet (Tropical) with Chessie team has also expanded with Marsha

and Clementine, Barbara and Ava Peach, Georgia and Spanx, and a new husband and wife dog team, Phyllis & Leonard, with Queenie & Tipper. “Not only are these second graders learning how to communicate with each other by writing letters, but their handwriting has greatly improved,” says Clair Kettler. “They also illustrate their letters and are excited to learn the similarities and differences between them, even though many pen pals are of the opposite sex. It was a random selection but it amazes me how well-matched the students are to their pen pals.” Recently, Iris Friedman’s request for funds to hire a school bus to take her class to Tropical Elementary was granted. At the end of the school year her students were able to meet their pen pals and then have a pizza party in the park where parents from the Tropical class and all the other dog teams joined them. No bones about it, this program proves that learning can always be fun. Peters Elementary is currently seeking more pet therapy dog teams for the 2017-2018 school year. BE PR down, and fast-moving water can sweep a vehicle away. In addition, flood water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines and may hide dangerous debris or places where the ground is washed away. ▸▸ Photograph the damage to your property to assist in filing an insurance claim. ▸▸ C heck-in with family and friends by texting or using social media to make sure everyone is safe.

WHAT’S IN YOUR KIT?

T

he 2017 Hurricane Season runs through November 30th and this is predicted to be a more active season than usual. Colorado State University expects 14 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes this season, while the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects 11 to 17 named storms this season, more than the 30-year average for the Atlantic Basin. Although there is no strong correlation between the number of storms or hurricanes and U.S. landfalls in any given season, NOAA research has found that the United States averages one to two hurricane landfalls each season. That means we need to be prepared. Here are some helpful tips on what you need to know to be prepared before, during and after a storm.

What to do now:

What to do as the storm approaches: ▸▸ Secure your home by covering all windows with hurricane shutters or plywood. ▸▸ Bring in all outdoor furniture, garbage cans, decorations, and anything else that is not tied down and could become airborne. ▸▸ C harge your cell phone so you have a full battery in case you lose power. ▸▸ Withdraw cash from the bank. ATM’s will not work in a power outage. ▸▸ G as up your car and buy extra gas if needed to fuel generators or gaspowered tools. ▸▸ Fill aluminum or plastic containers with potable (drinking) water. Plan for one gallon per person per day. In addition, fill pre-sanitized sinks and tubs with water for bathing and flushing toilets.

▸▸ P ut together a disaster supply kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information. ▸▸ Make a family emergency communication plan. ▸▸ Register for text or email alert systems for emergency notifications. ▸▸ Hurricane winds can cause trees and branches to fall, so trim or remove damaged trees and limbs to keep you and your property safe. Proper tree pruning also increases the likelihood that a tree can weather a storm. ▸▸ Secure loose rain gutters and downspouts and clear any clogged areas or debris to prevent water damage to your property.

26

JULY 2017 | OUR CITY PLANTATION

▸▸ Turn your refrigerator or freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary. If you lose power, food will last longer. Keep a thermometer in the refrigerator to be able to check the food temperature when the power is restored. ▸▸ Turn on your TV or radio, or check your city/county website, every 30 minutes to get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.

What to do during the storm: ▸▸ Monitor your radio or television

for weather updates and instructions from public safety officials. ▸▸ Stay indoors, preferably in an interior room with no windows. ▸▸ Turn off electricity at the circuit breaker if you notice leaks in the roof or windows or if there is flooding. ▸▸ Use flashlights, not candles or kerosene lamps, as your light source. ▸▸ Avoid using the phone and do not bathe or shower during the storm. ▸▸ Do not go outside during the eye of the storm. The calm is brief. Hurricane-force winds will resume shortly.

What to do after the storm: ▸▸ L isten to local officials for updates and instructions. Remain inside until authorities say it’s safe to go outside. ▸▸ Many disaster-related injuries occur in the aftermath of a hurricane. Watch out for debris and downed power lines. ▸▸ Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you

It is essential that everyone have a well-stocked hurricane supply kit. It should contain enough supplies to sustain you and your family members for three to five days. Here is a basic list of what should be included in every emergency kit: ▸▸ Water -- at least one gallon per person per day ▸▸ Non-perishable food ▸▸ Non-electric can opener ▸▸ F lashlight, battery-powered radio and extra batteries ▸▸ Fully charged mobile phone with charger ▸▸ P rescription medications, enough for a month ▸▸ B aby care items including formula, baby food, disposable diapers and wipes ▸▸ First-aid kit ▸▸ Personal hygiene items ▸▸ Household cleaning supplies ▸▸ Tools ▸▸ E xtra pair of glasses ▸▸ Pet care items, including food ▸▸ E xtra set of car keys ▸▸ C ash – ATM’s and credit card devices might not be working ▸▸ I mportant documents in a waterproof container including emergency contact numbers, insurance policies (auto, home, life, etc.), medical records, bank account numbers ▸▸ C harcoal or gas grill ▸▸ Paper goods and plastic eating utensils

WHERE DO I GO? If you live in a coastal or low-lying area, you may need to evacuate to an emergency shelter if a hurricane is approaching. Emergency shelters provide a refuge of last resort for those individuals who need to evacuate and are unable to make their own evacuation and sheltering arrangements, such as with friends, family, or in hotels outside of the evacuation zones. The American Red Cross operates the following shelters at area schools:

WHAT DO YOU MEAN?

Storm conditions can vary in intensity, size and direction of approach, so it is critical that you understand exactly what the forecasters and news reporters are saying and what it means to you and your family. Here is a list of common terminology as defined by the National Hurricane Center: Eye – The roughly circular area of comparatively light winds that encompasses the center of a severe tropical cyclone. The eye is either completely or partially surrounded by the eyewall cloud. Hurricane – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher. Hurricane Warning – An announcement that sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are expected somewhere within the specified area. Because hurricane preparedness

activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the warning is issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm force winds. The warning can remain in effect when dangerously high water or a combination of dangerously high water and waves continue, even though winds may be less than hurricane force. Hurricane Watch – An announcement that sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are possible within the specified area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the hurricane watch is issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm force winds. Major Hurricane – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 111 mph or higher, corresponding to a Category 3, 4 or 5 on the SaffirSimpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale – A 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane’s sustained wind speed.

Hurricanes reaching Category 3 and higher are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage. Storm Surge – An abnormal rise in sea level accompanying a hurricane or other intense storm. Storm surge is often one of the most dangerous elements of a hurricane because the dome of water can be 20 feet high at the peak and stretch 50-100 miles wide.

Tropical Cyclone – A rotating, organized system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or subtropical waters and has a closed low-level circulation. Tropical cyclones rotate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. Tropical Depression – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less. Tropical Storm – A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph.

s part of the Kids and The Power of Work (KAPOW) program, twenty Franklin Academy 7th grade students were able to visit the Sunrise Police Department and the Sunrise FireRescue Department just before the 2016-2017 school year came to a close. The special field trip was presented by Learning for Success, Inc. and The City of Sunrise in conjunction with Broward County Schools. KAPOW, now in its 25th year, serves 6,000 students annually. The unique collaboration between the school district, 100 area businesses and community organizations, volunteers, and 64 South Florida schools introduces and exposes students to career awareness through professionally designed lessons taught by volunteers in the classroom and on work sites. The students began their day at the City of Sunrise Public Safety Building and Fire-Rescue Department where they were able to learn about all aspects of police, fire and rescue work, including the canine unit, SWAT Team, communications center, fire-rescue equipment and methods, administration, and special investigations. The students were able to meet Sunrise Police Chief John Brooks, Sunrise Fire-Rescue Chief Thomas DiBernardo, and numerous Police and Fire-Rescue Department volunteers while Franklin Academy Principal Sergio Delgado and 7th grade teacher, Tari Clement looked upon their ambitious and fascinated bunch like proud parents. “The KAPOW program gives our students the opportunity to connect what they are learning in school to its application in work and life,” says Eileen Turay, Franklin Academy School Counselor. “The students were so grateful to have the opportunity to see the variety of careers available at the Police and Fire dept. To “C” or Not to “C” – The Cesarean Section BY JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

ASK THE EXPERT

P

regnant women typically have a vision of what type of birth they are planning and hoping for. However, one shouldn’t rule out the possibility of a Cesarean section. A Cesarean section, also better known as a C-section, is the delivery of a baby through a surgical incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. Although the C-section delivery rate has declined in recent years, the number of women delivering via C-section in the United States is still about 1 in 3. The main reason is when problems arise during labor. In certain circumstances, one may be scheduled in advance, but most of the time it’s done in response to an unforeseen complication. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, about 33 percent of American women who gave birth in 2011 had a cesarean delivery. The C-section rate in the United States has risen nearly 60 percent since 1996. In order to avoid the surgical procedure, or to make it as uncomplicated as possible the first thing to do is to pay attention to weight gain. Research has shown that women who were overweight when they got pregnant are twice as likely as their counterparts to need a C-section. It’s also been noted that obese women are more at risk to have surgical complications and a slower time healing. Other research has shown that overweight women labor longer which could also lead to a necessary C-section. Sometimes, it’s known that a pregnant woman will need a C-section even before she goes into labor. If this is the case, a planned C-section will be scheduled. Some of the reasons why one may be required are the following: ▸▸ The person is carrying more than one baby. ▸▸ More than one previous cesarean has been done. ▸▸ The person has previously had some kind of invasive uterine surgery. ▸▸ The baby is expected to be very large. ▸▸ The baby is in a breech (bottom first) or transverse (sideways) position. ▸▸ The placenta is so low in the uterus that it covers the cervix. ▸▸ There is an obstruction of some kind such as a large fibroid. Emergency C-sections are performed if problems arise making delivery dangerous to the mother or the baby. This may happen if any of the following occurs during labor: ▸▸ The cervix stops dilating, or the baby stops moving down the birth canal. ▸▸ The baby’s heart rate concerns the practitioner. ▸▸ The umbilical cord slips through the cervix which can cut off the baby’s oxygen supply. ▸▸ The placenta starts to separate from the uterine wall. ▸▸ There is an STD outbreak which may give the baby an infection. A good health provider will always be sure to guide their patient in the best delivery option for them regardless of the circumstance. It’s always important and encouraged for a patient to ask questions to feel comfortable about any procedure.

BY THOMAS DIBERNARDO, SUNRISE FIRE CHIEF

F

or Americans, Independence Day celebrations entwine patriotic pageantry with classic summertime recreation. Amidst the barbeques and evening fireworks, safety must be remembered, too. The National Fire Protection Association cites that fireworks cause more than 18,500 fires annually, and that more fires are reported on July 4th than on any other day of the year. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of 230 people – mostly male - go to the emergency room with injuries from fireworks each day between June 20th and July 20th. Children and teens are especially at risk to incur burns and other injuries – some of which can be devastating and even fatal. The majority of the injuries are from fireworks purchased legally by consumers for private use. The sparkler in your child’s hand burns at up 2000° - more than enough to cause serious harm if it’s mishandled. Skip the backyard pyrotechnics, and go enjoy a professional fireworks display.

Fortunately, a spectacular fireworks show will be presented at the City of Sunrise’s annual 4th of July Celebration. Held at the BB&T Center from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., this FREE outdoor event also offers children’s activities, food and retail vendors, and a concert. This year’s lineup features Junkanoo band-turned-architects of the ubiquitous stadium anthem, the Baha Men, and infectious power pop chart-toppers of the 80s, the Romantics. Whatever your plans, please secure your pets indoors during the festivities to reduce the chance of them getting loose or injured. With their sensitive hearing, animals can become extremely frightened by the noise from fireworks. After the celebrations, owners are often surprised to find their pets have escaped their usual enclosures, and sometimes causing harm to property or to themselves in their panic. Finally, remember that fireworks aren’t the holiday’s only hazard; cooking fires are also a concern. If you’ll be grilling up burgers and hotdogs, be sure to use your grill outdoors and away from your house. Avoid being near the eaves of the roof, deck railings, or tree branches. Never leave your grill unattended, and keep children and pets out of the area. Wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday! Chief Thomas DiBernardo For more information and safety tips, visit the City of Sunrise website at www.sunrisefl.gov/fire, ‘Like’ us on Facebook at Sunrise Fire-Rescue and follow us on Twitter@SunriseFRD.

Harley, a mixed breed, is 8-years-old. His favorite person is his human mom, Debbie. His favorite toy is a big squeaky fox, although he has many. The only thing he truly dislikes are his nails being touched due to a previous injury. His all-time favorite thing to do is spend time at Covenant Village of Florida. The retirement community in Plantation welcomes Harley’s weekly visits as he performs tricks for its residents and family members in the Care Center. He was last seen chasing lizards in the backyard.

IT’S KOSHER!

For more than 54 years, Goodman Jewish Family Services of Broward County (JFS) has been providing services to all county residents. In late spring, the organization held its 55th Annual Meeting at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El to provide a “state of the agency” and a look ahead to the launch this summer of The Cupboard – a new, kosher food pantry with a goal of helping end Jewish hunger in Broward. Volunteers and staff were also recognized for their instrumental efforts.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

City of Sunrise Mayor, Mike J. Ryan welcomed the United Way of Broward County as they honored 56 veterans in appreciation of their military service at the Journey Home Ceremony and Quilts of Valor event at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre. MISSION UNITED partnered with Quilts of Valor to award locally made quilts to service men and women who have been deployed and served in a wartime service in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Haiti, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq.
