Back to School in South Florida
S
ummer vacations are a hallmark of modern life. After the final bell of the school year rings, children from across the country anxiously head home, often looking forward to trips abroad, excursions to the beach, local “staycations” or time at summer camps. Summer break, however, does not last forever. Most local kids return to school on August 14th this year. They will bring with them stories of adventure, excitement and maybe even a little bit of boredom. Like vacation options, the number of after-school programs has exploded. There are a myriad of activities and opportunities for families to choose from. Parents also have more choice in how their kids are educated today; rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, parents now decide between their local public school, charter schools, private schools or online learning. So many choices can become overwhelming. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City Magazine is here to help! Check out Our City’s Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains useful information on the best preschools, private schools and educational programs in the local area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide our readers with a useful guide to help get ready for the new school year. Remember to enjoy the last couple weeks of summer. Before you know it, school will have already started.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Father’s Day Event Built Projects and Bonds BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he City of Plantation prides itself on its many beautiful parks and recreational facilities as well as its many classes, camps, sports, senior programs, and special event activities. From Daddy/Daughter Masquerade Balls and Mother/Son Superhero Parties to Truck or Treat, Selfies with Santa, a Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, and so many more, the agency works hard to meet the needs of Plantation’s ever-growing community. “The Plantation Parks & Recreation Department is proud to offer these types of events to our community. We are working to maintain the hometown community feel that our residents have come to love and expect. One of our recent initiatives is to provide family-friendly, engaging activities and events at all of our recreation facilities to reach as many people as possible,” explained Trish O’Toole, Assistant Director, Parks & Recreation Department.
Just recently, one would say they “nailed” their second Father’s Day event; “Tool Time with Dad” was a huge success. The City of Plantation teamed up with Home Depot to present an opportunity for fathers and their children to create a project together in honor of June’s signature holiday. Forty-two participants ages four and up gathered at the Plantation Community Center for the evening project. Home Depot supplied all the materials and some of their staff along with their trademark orange aprons. The City was sure to have their great staff onsite as well as treats such as pizza, chips, drinks, and cake to celebrate the special occasion. Dads and their children were able to choose from three projects: a toolbox, a basketball court (with a mini basketball), or a planter. After instruction, the ambitious duos worked diligently to build their designs. They were also able to complete them with paint.
The men enjoyed their special time with their young ones and were appreciative of the City providing such an event. “Thanks for putting on this event. My girls loved it,” exclaimed Jason Gouge. “The kids and I had a blast and the staff was great,” added Scott Shey. “It was a great opportunity for fathers and children to build their bond,” said Plantation Parks and Recreation employee Deshaun Sweet. “Our Parks & Recreation staff members have done an amazing job at planning and implementing these creative activities for families to engage with one another, enjoy our parks and community centers, and create lasting memories. We are looking forward to continuing these types of events, community outreach efforts, and partnerships with local businesses and organizations for years to come,” added O’Toole.

Westside Regional Medical Center’s New Patient Tower Opens BY BARBARA SIMMONS, RN, CEO WESTSIDE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
W
estside Regional Medical Center has a simple mission: “We are committed to the care and improvement of human life.” As a care provider to the Plantation community since 1974, we are committed to meeting the needs of our community. Our facility has offered world-class emergency, heart, stroke, and surgical care for years. Due to the demand for services, we recognized the need to expand to better deliver the care we provide. To address this demand, we began the construction process on a three-story expansion in January 2017. In addition to 72 new private rooms, the expansion will include a new lobby, patient registration area, gift shop and café. Our goal is to create a healing environment with increased natural light in care areas and soothing interior colors. While the new expansion is creating 72 new private rooms, Westside’s bed count is only increasing by 26, from 224 beds to 250 beds. We are excited to transition many of our existing rooms to private rooms. Additional enhancements to Westside include an enlarged surgical recovery area, renovated cafeteria, and a refresh of the interiors in the existing hospital. Expansions of this size require support from many members of the community. We thank the

Accolades? Of course. Dance Theatre has been awarded the prestigious “Reader’s Choice” and “Best in the West” awards multiple times. Trophies? Thousands. Dance Theatre’s elite team of competitive dancers, DTX, consistently receives top awards at virtually every competition they enter. Testimonials? You bet. So, what is it that makes this place so special? “Our formula is simple” says owner and Director Michelle Gerlick, “We build Dance Theatre beautiful, safe, clean Offers facilities, hire the best Classes teachers in the business, for Children Ages 3 and treat each child and Up that walks through our doors as if they were our very own.” “Awards are nice, and our trophies are beautiful,” Michelle continues, “but that’s not what we strive for. We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate. It is incumbent upon us to do it effectively. We train exceptional dancers, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models who help to guide our students as they mature. We work hard, we have passion, and we care deeply about the impact we have on their lives. When a parent tells me that their child has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. That is why we do this.” Michelle certainly has the pedigree to run one of the nation’s most successful dance programs. Her mother Joan was a Rockette, June Taylor Dancer,

Going for Gold – Plantation Girl Scouts Earn Prestigious Award BY BEVERLY PERKINS
I
n early May, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida held their annual Gold Award Ceremony. Among the eighteen Girl Scouts presented with a Gold Award this year were Plantation residents, Katherine Gould of Troop 10344, Emily Hui of Troop 10858, and Jaleesa Smith of Troop 10639. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout in grades 9 – 12 can earn. The level of commitment to complete a Gold Award project is so great that less than 6% of all Girl Scouts in the world earn it. It is accomplished Katherine Gould and Jaleesa Smith by completing a service project with a minimum of 80 logged hours. The project must fulfill a need in the community, create change, and be sustainable with long-term possibilities. Gold Award projects demand the highest level of organizational, leadership, and project management skills.

Katherine’s project titled Always Wondering: Science for Low-Income Preschoolers was inspired after she took a trip with her troop to God’s Little Lambs, a low-income family pre-school in Oakland Park. The observant scout has loved science since a young age and to her dismay, she noticed that preschoolers don’t enter elementary schools with a basic understanding of the scientific method: observation, curiosity and wonder. She worked closely with the school’s director to develop weekly, age-appropriate, science lessons and experiments for the children. She researched experiments, created a simple template for a lesson plan, and compiled lesson plans that she provided to the school throughout the year. Emily’s project titled Take the Stage was first inspired when she volunteered at Surfers for Autism in 2016. After seeing the event sell out, she realized there needed to be more programs for these children. This eager scout chose to address this need through one of her passions: dance. Take the Stage is offered in partnership with Broward County Parks and the Recreation Special Populations Division and is a program where dance is taught to special-needs children with help from high school volunteers. “Because we are not much older than our participants, my volunteers and I are able to bond with our
students very closely,” explained Emily. “The parents cheer and encourage their children during the classes and the children benefit from improved confidence, coordination, and social and motor skills. The volunteers also gain a lot from the class as they see the students grow and Emily Hui improve every week. There are usually tears from both parents and volunteers at the end of each session.” Jaleesa’s project titled One Note at a Time stemmed from her intense passion for music. The talented scout has played the saxophone for more than six years and learned on her own how to play the clarinet, flute, baritone, trumpet, bassoon, guitar, bass, drums, and piano. However, when she got to high school, she felt others were more musically advanced than she was. So, she created a comprehensive guide designed for any beginning band student or for any player who wants to understand their instrument better. Sunrise Middle School and Fort Lauderdale High School all benefited from her ambitious project.

Police Officers, News Reporters, and a Guinness World Record Holder Visit All Saints Catholic School BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
wenty years ago, All Saints Catholic School opened its doors to elementary students. Fast forward two decades and the Sunrise school recently celebrated its platinum anniversary. To honor the milestone, they had their annual Career Day program. However, this one was different from the former ones; all presenters were to be school alumni. Mrs. Karen Holewinski organized the anticipated event. She has been a beloved teacher at the school since 2000 so it was fitting for her to locate previous students. She was thrilled to learn of her former students’ ventures after graduating from All Saints. In keeping up with the tech-savvy generation of today, she contacted most of her former students through social media to ask them to participate in the Career Day program. “I will always be thankful and appreciative for the education and values All Saints provided; kudos to the teachers, Mrs. McNamara, and Fr. Tony,” added Jan Rodriguez, a former All Saints parent. The current students of All Saints had the opportunity to learn about a wide range of occupations from the former students of the school, including registered nurses, local police officers, a City of Sunrise firefighter,
a paralegal, a teacher from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, news reporters, and even a former student that holds three world records in spearfishing. Lauren Petrelli, a news reporter from Fox 4 Morning News in Cape Coral said, “I had the best time meeting the kids and getting to see my former teachers.” Most All Saints graduates used PowerPoint presentations to explain their career while some played games. The ER nurse had students participate in an activity using UV light and GloGerm lotion to demonstrate the importance of proper handwashing. Anchor/ Reporter Michael Cadigan of Spectrum News 1 in Kentucky created a special behind-the-scenes video about his workplace. A local policewoman allowed students to explore her police car, wear a bulletproof vest, and handle some tools. The kindergarten students each drew pictures of their favorite presenters. Most drew pictures of the policewoman who many were intrigued by. “I want to be a police officer now,” said 5th Grade student Jessica Gonzales. “It was a great day seeing all of my former students as adults in their careers,” exclaimed Holewinski.

SPHS Theatre Director is in The Spotlight BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
nd the award goes to…Jason Zembuch-Young! The South Plantation High School (SPHS) Theatre Teacher and Director was the recipient of an Excellence in Theatre Education Award at the 2019 Tony Awards held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The well-loved director was one of twentyfive to have an honorable mention at the 73rd annual signature event which recognizes achievement in Broadway productions. Zembuch-Young has been at SPHS for over sixteen years where he began the “Theatre for the Deaf” program. Since its creation, he has produced every show using both voice and American Sign Language. The conception came because of the unavailability of interpreters to come to the theatre in the evenings when rehearsals took place. “From where it started as an experiment with my hearing actors, it has evolved into really truly being able to embrace a culture and incorporate a deaf culture into the production that we actually have as well as making theatre accessible to all audiences,” explained Zembuch-Young. The dedicated teacher worked within the system to change it and now interpreters are available for day and night as well as all extracurricular activi-

ties, not just the theatre program. The program is much more than just a show with sign language, it’s assuring that the deaf community is well represented. “Jason has inspired and motivated so many young people to find their voices through art. He is an amazing individual who my son was lucky to have.
He teaches the value of perseverance, dedication, and being meticulous to their craft. In terms of a life lesson, the work ethic is necessary for a path to success no matter what they desire to achieve,” exclaimed SPHS parent Ben Moreno. “I look at my kids as colleagues and I believe that we have a theatre company, that this is not just a bunch of kids putting on a play. We strive as much as we possibly can to produce professional theatre that happens to take place in a high school setting,” added Zembuch-Young. Besides teaching and mentoring his students to be the best they can be, Zembuch-Young and his husband Michael have fostered over thirty-seven children. The duo and their bunch can always be found on the weekends at rehearsals where they interact with his other children (his students) and absorb the culture of the theatre. All foster families receive free admission to his shows since he believes that all children deserve the opportunity to experience the theatre no matter what their situation. The ambitious couple recently adopted a daughter and facilitated the adoption of one of his students by a colleague before she aged out of the foster system.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
HOT Summertime Tips to Remember! BY MAYOR LYNN STONER ummer may be drawing to a close. But that doesn’t mean we can stop worrying about South Florida’s sizzling heat and sun. If we spend a lot of time outdoors, or even if we are just running errands on the weekends, we all need to be careful. There is a downside to our beautiful South Florida weather. Skin cancer from too much sun exposure, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are serious, potentially life-threatening conditions, and it’s important to remember a few important safety tips. Always apply sunscreen. This has probably been drilled into your heads since childhood! Even if you are not going to the pool or the beach, it’s important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful, damaging rays all day, every day. That’s also true even on overcast days since clouds only block about 20 percent of the sun’s UV rays. It goes without saying that you should never leave children or pets in an unattended vehicle, even if only for a few minutes. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 130 degrees or more when the outside temperature is only 85 degrees and, in South Florida, we’ve seen the heart-wrenching consequences of not following this important rule too many times. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include a throbbing headache, fainting, fatigue, dizziness, muscle weakness or cramps, nausea, and vomiting. If you experience any of these symptoms, drink plenty of fluids, especially sports drinks to replace lost salt and other important minerals, remove any tight or unnecessary clothing, and take a cool shower or apply a cool compress or ice towels. If such measures fail to provide relief within 15 minutes, seek emergency medical help because if left untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which can be fatal. Check on family, friends, and neighbors who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat. This can include the elderly, people with physical or mental health conditions, and pregnant women. If someone doesn’t have air condition, suggest that they spend time in a library, school, mall or theater during the hottest part of the day. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, clothing. Studies show there is actually little difference in the effect on temperature between dark and light clothing. What’s important is that the clothing is loose and lightweight and that they allow airflow. Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Make sure they have plenty of cool water. Also, if they are outdoor pets, ensure they have a shady spot to get out of the sun. Don’t let your dog linger on hot pavement, as sensitive paw pads may burn. Summer is a great time for family vacations, trips to the beach, hanging outside with friends, and poolside barbeques. Taking a few precious moments to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the effects of the heat and sun will go a long way to ensuring our health down the road.

ASK THE EXPERT
Habitual Toe Walkers BY DR. JOHN GOODNER
A
t the beginning of independent walking, toddlers may walk on their toes. Within three to six months the heel should be touching the ground during gait. Intermittent toe walking may be present in normal children until age six or seven. Most children who present as persistent toe walkers are able to lower their heels to the ground when standing but not walking. Walking heel-toe is possible for a few steps but usually awkwardly due to tight calf muscles. Toe walkers are more common in boys and in many cases are a cause of concern. Treatment of habitual toe walkers may be necessary to avoid problems that can occur secondary to compensating for the abnormal posture. Compensation may occur by hyperextending the knee, rotating the entire leg towards the outside or having the foot turn down or out, causing a flat foot. It is important to assess the degree of muscle tightness in the hips, knees and legs. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. If the gastroc soleus (calf muscles) are not severely tight, stretching at home may be of benefit. Usually casting the foot and leg is necessary to stretch out the tight muscle group. Casts may be applied every two weeks for four to eight weeks. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. CAUSES: ▸▸ Tightness of the calf muscles ▸▸ Neurological disorders must always be ruled out SIGNS: ▸▸ Inability to walk in a normal heel-toe gait ▸▸ Persistently on the ball of the foot ▸▸ Bouncing type gait or gait that appears abnormal ▸▸ Pain in legs, especially at night
▸▸ Feet pointing to the outside ▸▸ Arch very flat ▸▸ Arched lower back (hyperlordosis) SYMPTOMS: ▸▸ Pain in the legs especially during activity ▸▸ Pain in the legs at night ▸▸ Fatigue in the feet and legs with activity TREATMENT: ▸▸ Thorough history and physical exam. Neurologic causes must be ruled out. ▸▸ Mild cases may require stretching exercises and night splints. ▸▸ Moderate cases require casting the leg to stretch the calf muscles. The cast is weightbearing and may be necessary for four to eight weeks. There is no pain involved. The child can resume almost all activities in the cast, including riding a bicycle and walking briskly. ▸▸ Following cast removal, splints at night may be needed. Casting the leg is especially important if the child is flat footed. If untreated, the arch will flatten, causing long-term foot, ankle, knee and back problems. ▸▸ Casting is almost always successful in the younger child if the degree of tightness is not severe. Failure to stretch the muscle group with casting the extremity may necessitate surgically lengthening the Achilles tendon or calf muscle. This is done by making three small incisions on the back of the leg, each about one-twelfth of an inch or a small cut in the gastroc aponeurosis. Casts are applied postoperatively for six weeks and night splinting for six to twelve months to maintain the correction. Doing this procedure may have a positive impact on these children for the rest of their life. They can avoid long-term problems with the extremities and back by having this procedure done properly. However, most patients avoid talking about pain during intercourse, a condition known as dyspareunia. Patients should not feel embarrassed to address this issue with their doctors and should know that they are not alone. The American Menopause Society reports that 17-45 % of the patients have dyspareunia during menopause. Symptoms include pain in the vulvar area, in and out of the vagina, dryness, burning sensation, itchiness, increase in urinary tract infections, and bleeding or tears after having sex. After menopause the vaginal cells lose water, the tissue gets thinner and lacks elasticity. These changes are known as Vulvar and Vaginal Atrophy (VVA) and are caused by decreasing estrogen levels. Although it seems as if nothing can solve the issue, some treatments are available that may help. Lubricants and Moisturizers For those women who prefer a non-hormonal therapy, lubricants and moisturizers can be used. It is important to understand that this method only provides short term relief and does not work in improving the VVA symptoms. Intravaginal hormonal formulations Low-dose topical estrogen therapy is applied directly in the vagina and in this way the systemic absorption is minimal. Multiple vaginal estrogen products are approved by the FDA with comparable efficacy in improving the thickness and elasticity of the vaginal tissue. Intravaginal estrogens are available in creams, Our City Media 6/19 Crossword rings, or vaginal tablets and suppositories. Another option is a synthetic drug named Prasterone which stimulates estrogen and testosterone production in the vaginal tissue. This medication does not increase systemic Solution hormone levels and as a result it may be a safer therapy for patients with contraindications for estrogen.
