It’s Election Time
T
he Florida Primary Election was on August 28th. We hope you joined us in voting. We feel lucky to live in a country where every citizen has the right to vote, regardless of age, sex or economic standing. According to the Freedom House’s Freedom in the World 2018 report, more than 60% of people on earth live in countries without these basic freedoms. Unfortunately, by some standards, freedom is becoming more constrained here in the United States. There are many important issues at all levels of government today. We can decide whether to change the direction of our country or keep it the same. The easiest and best way to ensure we retain our personal and economic liberty is to participate in elections. Each of us can make an equal impact on how our country, state, county and city is governed, regardless if you are a Democrat or Republican, or a liberal or a conservative. The general election is November 6th. Mark your calendar and remember to make your voice heard and vote! Sincerely,
Terry and Christy Jaillet President & Publishers

One for the Books – Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library Celebrates 50 Years
THE HELEN B. HOFFMAN PLANTATION LIBRARY
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or just about five decades, the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library has been enriching lives, building a sense of community, and fostering lifelong learning in a diverse and non-judgmental environment by providing a comprehensive range of materials, programs, and services for people of all ages. The popular Plantation facility is proud to be celebrating “50 Years on Fig Tree Lane” on October 6th from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. The entire community is invited to attend. In addition to a historical display, there will be a 50 Kids’ Books Read-a-Thon, refreshments, and more. The Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library was established in the late 1950s by Helen (Betty) Hoffman along with the members of the Plantation Woman’s Club. The original intention of the all-volunteer library was to help local children with their homework. The Hoffman’s moved to Mrs. Hoffman with Mayor Frank Veltri Plantation in 1948 and both
were dedicated to making Plantation the best place to live. Dr. Abram Hoffman founded the Plantation Homeowner’s Association in 1949 while his wife was busy bringing arts and culture to the then rural and underdeveloped Plantation community. The Plantation City Library (it’s original name), occupied the sixth-grade classroom at Peters Elementary School four nights a week. Later in 1963, the library became a City Department, and was relocated to the Plantation Community Center on Palm Tree Road. The much-needed demand for its own structure was dedicated in 1968 and has expanded several times throughout the years to accommodate the growing needs of the community. It was in 1981 when the library was named for Mrs. Hoffman’s dedication and service. “As we celebrate ‘50 Years on Fig Tree Lane’ this year we can look back on the expansions and improvements that have been made to the building, but we should also focus on how the mission of the library has changed as well. Our library has pushed our services beyond the brick walls of our building with projects like Wi-Fi access, the online catalog, providing access to Mango Languages and the Odilo eBooks platform,” said Library Director Monika

FEATURE STORY
Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten (DPK) Offers an Extraordinary VPK BY BEVERLY PERKINS
F
or over three decades Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten (DPK) has been providing the best educational setting for young children in Plantation Acres. The unique academic setting offers children a fun and exciting environment to develop healthy and positive selfesteems, communication abilities, and learning skills. Additionally, individualized instruction enables each child to learn at his/her own rate in classrooms with a low student-teacher ratio. Kathie Geller O’Dwyer, M.S., C.C.C.slp, Owner / Director of Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten, answered some commonly asked questions about her school. How did Developmental Pre-School & Kindergarten (DPK) come about? I sought to return to work as a speech and language pathologist outside the home when my children were two and three years of age. Unable to find a pre-school that would enhance my children’s interest to learn academics and have fun at the same time, I embarked upon the creation of Developmental PreSchool and Kindergarten in order to fulfill this goal. Developmental Pre-School and Kindergarten was created to be an academic-enriching environment for children ages 16 months through 6 years of age. The goal of the school is to build a strong, energetic learner who utilizes all his/her senses to glean information and analyze its meaning.
What sets DPK apart from other preschools? DPK is one of the only pre-schools that has classrooms with narrow age parameters, small class size and additional staff to insure exceptional pupil-teacher ratios. It is also a pre-school with the owner on the premises to preserve quality control in the learning environment. In addition, DPK boasts an exceptional private Kindergarten that does accept children who may miss the Broward County cut off of September 1st. We also offer an outstanding Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program. Tell us more about the VPK Program and how to register. The VPK @ DPK is extraordinary because children receive tutorials with our Reading Specialist. The VPK’s are inclusive of very small age intervals rather than having a class with children ranging in age from four to five years of age. By narrowing the age range in each class, the teacher can cater to the individual learning styles of our Pre-Kindergarteners. The program is academically stimulating and designed to prepare children for Kindergarten and First Grade. The students have access to our physical education, music, library and computer programs. Parents need to register online with the Early Learning Coalition and bring the voucher that is issued to DPK. They enroll in VPK @ DPK and receive a tuition scholarship reduction depending upon the number of hours the student attends.

Plantation Resident Receives 2018 Medal of Honor Award BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
his past summer many went to Orlando to visit a popular mouse, ride crazy roller coasters, and see incredible shows, but Plantation resident Howard Talenfeld went there to receive a prestigious award. The nationally-known children’s rights attorney and advocate was presented with the 2018 Medal of Honor Award from the Florida Bar Foundation at the 42nd Annual Reception and Dinner at the Hilton Bonnet Creek, the site of the 2018 Florida Bar Annual Convention. The Medal of Honor Award is the highest award given by The Florida Bar Foundation and recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves through their exceptional achievements in improving the administration of justice in Florida. Police Academy – Plantation Citizens on Assignment BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
any may remember the 1980s film series Police Academy in which the local police department had to accept all willing recruits. The film then followed a group of misfit recruits as they tried proving their capability to become outstanding police officers. Despite their set-backs and eccentricities the all-star cast succeeded proving that an underdog can achieve whatever they set their mind to. Like the major motion picture, The Plantation Police Department will once again be offering a “Citizen Police Academy” to recruit and teach the public how they can get involved in preventing crime. The 9-week course is free of charge and gives those interested a behind-the-scenes look at how the department operates. The course is open to adults and children
over 13 years of age who live, work, or have an affiliation with the City of Plantation. Those that do attend will be exposed to many every day examples of what police officers do in the community. The course includes a K-9 demonstration at the private dog park, firearms safety, a tour of the range, information on the Explorer program, gangs and organized crime, crime scene investigation and forensics. There will be participation in a D.U.I. scenario, viewing a robbery scenario, and much more. “We want people to know that the police are on their side, and we are here to protect and serve. The Citizen Police Academy bridges the gap between the public and the department. If someone has always considered a career in law enforcement, this is the best way to get first-hand knowledge of what goes on and what it takes,” said Lynn Braden, Crime Prevention and Community Relations. The free informative classes will commence on September 25th and run every Tuesday from 6:00 pm - 8:15 pm through
November 13th at the Plantation Police Department, 451 NW 70th Terrace, Plantation, in the Community Media Room. Attendance to each class is not mandatory but encouraged. Upon completion, Chief Howard Harrison will hold a graduation ceremony and give participants a special gift and a certificate. “We are here for the citizens of Plantation. I like to be very pro-active when it comes to police public relations. The best way to know and learn about the Plantation Police Department is to attend the Citizen Police Academy and join us at our ‘Coffee with a Cop’ events,” added Chief Harrison. Space is limited. Refreshments will be served. To register, or for more information, please call the Plantation Police Department Outreach, at (954) 916-5601 or visit www.plantation.org.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Back to School Safety BY CHIEF HOWARD HARRISON t’s that time again when our children are on their way back to school. Besides back to school shopping and other preparations, make safety the first lesson of the 2018-2019 academic year. To keep everyone safe, parents should talk to their children and continually remind them no matter what grade and age they are that safety always comes first. Here are some important tips we recommend: ► Students should know their home address and phone number as well as a parent’s cell phone number. Help your child practice it so they have it memorized before school begins. Also, have them memorize the emergency and non-emergency numbers to their local police department. ► There is safety in numbers. Be sure children use the buddy system and always walk to and from school with a friend or to stay with a group of peers at the bus stop. ► When walking or biking to school, students should stay within the cross walks and obey all traffic signals and signs. They should follow designated “Safe Walk Routes” and obey all crossing guards. If children ride their bikes to school, make sure they wear a helmet and reflective clothing and stay on the sidewalk when one is available. ► At arrival and dismissal times, school areas are congested. Drivers are often in a hurry which can lead to unsafe conditions for students and others walking, riding, and driving in school areas. Please exercise care and caution and follow the reduced school zone speeds and stay off mobile devices. ► Before the first day of school, walk to and from school with your child. If your child will be riding the bus, visit the bus stop with your children and be sure they know their bus numbers. ► Teach children the safety rule, “Say NO, GO and TELL.” If anyone approaches your child, offers them a ride, asks for directions, or makes them feel uncomfortable, ‘instruct them to say “NO,” get away from the situation (GO), and TELL a trusted adult. Be sure to discuss with your child who trusted adults may be: teachers, parents, a friend’s parents, neighbors, police officers, firefighters, relatives, etc. Tell them if you “see something, say something”. ► Make sure children understand never to leave school with anyone they haven’t been instructed to leave with by you. If someone comes up to them and tells them that there is an emergency and they want your child to go with them, be sure they know to check first with another trusted adult (school personnel) before doing so. ► Make sure your child has some sort of identification on them. ► And most importantly, if they are being bullied, make sure they tell someone as soon as possible. In general, even if your child is bullied, a bully or a bystander monitor social media or texting interactions, so you can widentify problems before they get out of hand.

his past summer more than 8,000 students, coaches, educators, and parents from across the country participated in the National Speech & Debate Championship. In “International Extemporaneous Speaking”, sophomore Juliette Reyes advanced to the octo-final round of competition, placing top 60 in the nation out of nearly 300 students. Reyes remarks, “Last summer, I remember seeing nationals through a series of social media pictures of kids in pure shock and joy after advancing to elimination rounds. This summer, after two years of giving my all; I was finally one of the lucky ones.” Additional American Heritage students who qualified to attend the national tournament were Emma Quarequio, Jana Kelly, Michael Guarasci, and Courtney Medwin. The American Heritage speech and debate team is coached by PJ Samorian, Ryan Hubbard, and Spencer Orlowski. “As a teacher, there is no greater reward than seeing your students achieve what you knew was possible. These students attended after-school practices regularly and traveled with our team to state and national competitions during the school year to sharpen their speech and debate skills in preparation for the NSDA National Tournament. This group of students has worked incredibly hard this year, so it is worthwhile to see them receive this recognition. Our staff could not be prouder!” exclaimed Coach Ryan Hubbard.

Last May, the Plantation resident received “Gold” recognition at a ceremony held at the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida headquarters. The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting and is open only to girls in high school. The prestigious award challenges girls to change the world by embarking on a seven-step project aimed at solving a community problem. Meloro’s project entitled “Write Your Heart Out” addressed the trend of young people opting for technology as a coping tool and communication outlet rather than writing their feelings down in a journal or diary. Teaching my class to the kids was an awesome experience because I knew they would take this knowledge about creative writing and be able to use it in their own lives,” exclaimed Meloro. “I had hoped to make a positive impact on young kids and teach them that creative writing can be more fun than wasting a day on electronics and can help them deal with life’s challenges. At the end of the classes, each student benefited, learning new writing techniques and ways to use creative writing as an outlet. Nurturing Education Through the Foster Grandparent Program BY BEVERLY PERKINS
S
chool is back in session for South Florida children, but it’s also back to school time for a group of local senior citizens who participate in an innovative program offered by the South Florida Institute on Aging (SoFIA). The program places adult volunteers into Title One schools, nonprofit childcare centers and preschools throughout Broward County to support the most underserved students who are at risk of failing academically. For over five decades, the program has been keeping grandparents connected to the community even if they don’t have grandkids nearby. Foster Grandparent volunteers are 55 and over and generally work 15 to 20 hours weekly. “With grandparent’s day on September 9th, this is an important program for seniors and the community to know about,” said SoFIA President and CEO Peter Kaldes. “The program offers
a win-win scenario. Not only do children thrive from the love and attention of our senior volunteers, seniors also feel a sense of purpose that is invaluable to their social well-being. Seniors have a wealth of knowledge that is relevant to all walks of life and we should strive to find ways to share it constructively throughout our communities.” One of these dedicated grandparents has been volunteering at Peters Elementary. The devoted individual, Morton Berger, is affectionately known as Mr. Morty. He has been working with second grade teacher, Iris Friedman for the past six years. The 88-year-old veteran helps students with their school work in a one-on-one or small group setting, teaching them reading and mathematics while also sharing knowledge from his various careers in life, when it lends itself to the curriculum. “I often hear the children say that they don’t know how to do a problem simply so that they get the opportunity to work with Mr. Morty,” said Iris Friedman. “I recall a time during his first year where he was forced to leave the classroom for a knee replacement surgery. He was so eager to return to the classroom that he set a recovery goal of five weeks. Sure enough, he met his objective and returned on time. This was an incredible life lesson for the children about the importance of setting and achieving goals.” In addition to serving in the Foster Grandparent Program, Berger advocates for veteran rights. Berger was also a part of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 10 years. As a civilian, he has worked for Broward County Parks and Recreation and was also a Postal Service Worker. “The children do so much to enrich my life and I miss it when I’m not at school,” said Berger. I am excited for a new year to begin.” Those who are interested to volunteer can contact the South Florida Institute on Aging (SoFIA) at 954484-7117 or for more information, please visit www.thesofia.org.

Back to School Reminders & Other Great Items on the Curriculum BY E. LANEY STEARNS, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF
I
t’s that time of year again when the calm, quiet mornings of summer are traded for the chaos of packing lunches, checking homework and loading everyone in the car for the commute to school and work. Summer is over, and the kids are back at school. So, here are a few things to put in the back of your mind as you struggle to understand your child’s math homework or read to your little ones before bed: ► The hot weather is still with us and will be for some time. When you send the children off to school be sure they stay hydrated and ensure they always have a hat when going outdoors. ► It’s not always easy, but when packing their lunches try to follow the FDA’s Balanced Plate model in building nutritious meals that will keep them energized throughout the day. ► After school they will have plenty of energy to burn and will be taking advantage of lingering day light. Use caution when driving during dusky hours. This is when visibility is the most difficult.
► ► ►
Backyard pools are still a fun place to be after school and on weekends. Remember to continue to “Watch the Water - Watch the Kids.” A car full of kids can be hectic. Leaving children in heated cars has become a pervasive problem which has caused far too many tragedies Remember, “Look before you lock.” Finally, if you are transporting young ones, have your car seat checked to ensure it is installed properly. Plantation residents can have their car seats checked free any Thursday, by calling for an appointment at 954-797-2150.

ASK THE EXPERT
What Can I Do About My Bunion? BY DR. JOHN GOODNER
A
bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. It is part of your normal foot and not a growth of new bone. The foot bones are starting to spread out, making the bone more prominent. Here are answers to commonly asked questions about bunions and
bunion surgery: What is the cause of bunions? Most commonly it is hereditary. Tight shoes will often bring out the problem sooner. Poor foot structure (i.e. flatfeet) may also contribute to the problem. Can I avoid getting bunions if my mother and grandmother have them? Generally, no. You may wear shoes that are wider in the toe box. This may delay the onset of bunions and prevent them from getting very painful. Eventually, a bunion will appear if you are predisposed to it. Do bunions get worse? Over time the bones in the feet spread out further making a bunion appear larger. It
may take months to many years, but they will almost always get worse, especially if you are pronated or flatfooted. Cartilage will start to wear thin and some degree of arthritis may develop. What causes the pain over the bunion? Shoes that are narrow put pressure on the skin, nerves and bone. Numbness or tingling may also develop as the nerve gets compressed against the bone by tight shoes. Can the bunion be corrected? Bunions can be corrected surgically if the bunion is painful and it is unresponsive to conservative care. In some cases, small bunions hurt much more than large bunions. Is it painful to have surgery? When done correctly by an experienced surgeon minimal pain is involved. We have done more than 5,000 bunion surgeries. Can I walk on it immediately after surgery? We advise people to stay off their foot for two or three days. A surgical boot is utilized for a period of six weeks to protect the area and allow it to heal properly. How quickly can I return to work after surgery? It usually requires four days of rest at home before returning to work. A special surgical shoe or boot is given to take stress off the area and prevent problems from developing postoperatively. How long will it take to get back into normal shoes? For everyone it is different. It will usually take four to six
weeks to get back into flat shoes or sneakers. Heels may take two to three months. Will I be able to resume sports after surgery? Stationery bicycles may be used one to two weeks after surgery. Running sports and activities may require six or more weeks. I had bunion surgery many years ago and it has come back. Can I do something about it? Yes. If the surgical procedure is done correctly a second time the results may be outstanding provided that there are no arthritic changes in the joint. If there are arthritic changes, many surgical options are available to correct the deformity. What is the long-term prognosis? In almost all cases, it is excellent. The earlier the treatment, the better the long-term prognosis because arthritic changes are minimized. HEALTH & WELLNESS
Hernias: Causes and Treatment Options BY CHARAN DONKOR, MD, FACS hernia is the protrusion of an internal body part through a wall of the cavity in which it is normally enclosed. This can happen through a rupture, tear, or weakness in the tissue. Most common causes include natural weakness in the abdominal wall, overexertion, surgery, or trauma. Who Is Most Susceptible? Hernias can occur in both men and women of all ages, as well as in children. They tend to be more common in men, occurring most often in the groin area where the abdominal folds meet the thighs. These are known as inguinal hernias or groin hernias. Women may be more prone to develop hernias in the femoral area often resulting from the strain of pregnancy and childbirth. Inguinal hernias are common in children and umbilical hernias are most commonly seen in infants. Umbilical hernias generally appear as a protrusion in the naval area. Umbilical hernias in infants tend to close without any treatment by the time the child is 3-4 years old. How Do I Know I Have One? Generally, you will notice a small lump somewhere in the groin or abdominal area. Many hernias are reducible; that is, the tissue can be pushed gently back into its normal place. If you notice a bulge that does not resolve, or you develop pain at the site, you should seek medical treatment. Are They Dangerous? If left unattended, the protrusion through the hole or gap can cause increasing amounts of pain, as more of the abdominal tissue pushes through the gap. As long as the hernia is reducible, it is not considered dangerous, but it can still put pressure on the surrounding tissue. An irreducible hernia can become life-threatening if a part of the bulging tissue becomes trapped and circulation is cut off to the tissue. This is called strangulation and is a surgical emergency. In this case you should seek immediate medical attention. Will It Heal by Itself? With the exception of umbilical hernias in infants, hernias will not go away on their own. In the short term, reducing strenuous physical activity, losing weight, and/or wearing a truss can lessen the discomfort caused by a hernia. Ultimately, the only way to fix a hernia is with surgery. What Are the Various Surgical Options? Open Hernia Surgery Open hernia surgery is performed by making an incision over the site of the hernia. The part of the intestine or other tissue bulging through is then placed back into the abdominal cavity. Finally, the abdominal wall is repaired by stitching the surrounding muscle together. The majority of the time the repair is completed by using a sterile mesh material to strengthen and repair the weak area. Minimally Invasive Hernia Surgery This includes laparoscopic and robotic surgery. In laparoscopy, the surgeon inserts small instruments, including a small camera through small holes made in the abdominal wall. The surgery is performed while viewing on a monitor. In robotic surgery, the surgeon sits at a console in close proximity to the patient and controls highly precise instruments through tiny incisions. The increased dexterity, 3D high definition visualization and other tools such as fluorescence allows for highly complex surgeries to be performed safely and precisely. Minimally invasive surgery is the preferred technique due to decreased pain, reduced infection and improved cosmesis.

itality Dental Group is a family-owned and operated general and cosmetic dental office that prides itself on providing high quality dental care in a comfortable and patient-centric environment. Doctors and staff use the latest techniques, materials, and procedures to provide patients with the dental care they need in order to achieve and maintain a lifetime of healthy smiles. Vitality Dental Group has offices conveniently located in Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Jorge I. Solano, DMD, and Jessica M. Navarro, DMD, both owners and General Dentists, answered some commonly asked questions about the practice. Describe your practice. We offer virtually all general and cosmetic dental procedures to help patients achieve and maintain beautiful smiles. Some of these include: crowns, bridges, extractions, root canals up to and including full-mouth rehabilitation with implants, and teeth-in-a-day concepts. We also provide cosmetic procedures, such as
Zoom teeth whitening and Invisalign orthodontic treatment, to achieve the beautiful white smiles patients want. What distinguishes your practice from the competition? We are a family-owned and operated dental office. This is not a large group or corporate dental office where the patient will see a different doctor every time they come in for an appointment. We pride ourselves on delivering quality care and will always stand behind any work or product we deliver. When did you open? Our Pembroke Pines office has been around since the 1970s. Dr. Solano began seeing patients in 2008, as the previous doctor transitioned into retirement. In May 2017, we opened a centrally-located office in Plantation. The new office makes it even more convenient for patients to obtain the oral care they need with the same level of customer service they’ve come to expect from us. Do you offer evening appointments? ASK THE EXPERT
Taking a Bite Out of Shark Teeth BY DR. MO SIRAGE DMD, MS n honor of the recent 30th annual “Shark Week”, it seems only right that we discuss those pesky “shark teeth” that are a common occurrence in kids around the ages of 5-7 years old. What are they? Why do they occur and what should parents do upon their arrival? Do we run and hide or take them out? These so-called “shark teeth” make an appearance when the permanent successors fail to push out the primary or “milk teeth” when they erupt. This happens in all teeth but is most common in lower front incisors. Depending on the teeth involved, the age of occurrence can vary greatly and may be seen as late as 12-13 years of age in some kids. Multiple rows of permanent teeth can also be spotted depending on the presence of extra teeth or in situations of relatively extreme crowding. The most common cause for this phenomenon is a lack of space. While there may be other factors that contribute to the severity of the situation, space is usually one of the main culprits. It’s important to remember that permanent teeth are approximately 30-40% larger than “milk teeth” and require the extra space to erupt comfortably into the mouth. Similar to what we see with South Florida traffic jams, when there isn’t enough room for the cars to move in their lane, they go anywhere they fit in. The same thing happens with erupting teeth. Unfortunately, this can mean teeth erupting in funny ways and when the tooth doesn’t stay in its lane it sometimes fails to push out the baby tooth in front of it. Consequently, we develop those multi-rowed shark teeth. So, what’s the best approach? Well, it honestly depends on the situation, but a good start is visiting your pediatric dentist and getting an exam and X-ray (if necessary). The dentist will then advise you to either “wiggle” them at home or have them removed to accommodate the erupting permanent teeth. A good amount of clinical judgement is involved when making a decision on how to proceed. The answer lies in the roots. If the roots of the baby teeth are present and the permanent teeth are visible, then they may need to be removed in order for the permanent teeth to move into the proper position. After all, the end goal is to accommodate all of the teeth present. But if the baby teeth have no roots then they can most likely be handled by the kids with a simple twist. Of course, whether the teeth are “wiggled out” at home or the dentist helps to remove them, the issue of inadequate space usually needs to be addressed. And while there are different times when braces may be applicable, your pediatric dentist will refer you to an orthodontist, or braces dentist, when the time is right.
