W

e are now a few weeks into the school year and hopefully your family has adjusted to the new routine. This year, three of our kids are attending Broward County Public Schools for the first time. One thing we have noticed here, that is different than their old schools, is that breakfast is offered to all students every day – and it is free for ALL children. The idea behind Universal Free Breakfast is a simple one: kids who eat a nutritious breakfast will be less hungry and, therefore, better able to pay attention throughout the day making them better students. Making the meals free to all students destigmatizes the situation. Economically disadvantaged kids won’t feel prying eyes when eating the free breakfast and, therefore, will be more likely to eat it. In practice, this is exactly what happens. According to the Food Research & Action Center, children who attend schools that serve universal breakfasts have lower rates of obesity, fewer visits to the school nurse, better behavior, better attendance, less tardiness, and, you guessed it, better test scores, by 17.5%. In fact, students with access to a healthy breakfast are 20% more likely to graduate from high school than those who don’t. So, make sure your children make it to the bus stop on time or get to school a couple minutes early so they can join their friends for breakfast. And tell them to eat up – their education is counting on it.

Tea for Two… or Three, or Four… Plantation Garden Club Presents the 7th Annual High Tea BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

t’s time for tea! The Plantation Garden Club is preparing to host its 7th Annual High Tea at the Renaissance Hotel, 1230 S. Pine Island Road in Plantation on Sunday, October 20th from 2:005:00 pm. All proceeds will benefit the Plantation Garden Club (PGC) Environmental Awards and Scholarships Program. The Garden Club was organized in 1963 by a group of “northern transplants” who loved gardening and wanted to learn how to garden in South Florida. As a revision of the mission statement progressed, members realized that in addition to gardening, sustainability was needed for the Club to ensure future generations would continue to garden and protect the unique South Florida environment. It was then that the Awards and Scholarship program was instituted. Applications for the program were written and distributed to all public schools in the City of Plantation. Students who are planning a career in Environmental Studies or environmentally related careers were invited to apply and an education committee was formed. At least two $1000 scholarships will be given to Plantation and South Plantation High School students at all levels who apply for garden-

ing and environmental projects. “The event and its purpose originated seven years ago when a revision of the mission statement was in progress,” explained Peggy Tingle, President of Plantation Garden Club. “We have been doing this for six years now and have awarded over seventy projects. To date, the Club has awarded over $30,000 in awards and scholarships.” The anticipated event includes a “Decorated Table Contest” with prizes, a fashion show featuring clothes from Chico’s Pembroke Pines and models from the Club plus an organized shopping event at the store the following week. Additionally, raffle baskets and silent auction items donated by local businesses and merchants always add a little excitement to the “par-tea”. Local Plantation groups and clubs are encouraged to support the Garden Club by purchasing a table and/or recruiting members to attend the delight-

ful afternoon of social interaction and competition. Sponsors of the event are introduced and acknowledged and are featured in all of the publicity materials including the website and the social media page. “We are so excited that several of the sponsors have supported the Club for the past six years and have already indicated they will return this year. There has been a steady increase in the amount of money and number of applicants each year. The Club is deeply grateful for them as it reduces costs and allows more of the profits to go to students,” added Tingle. eautiful Smiles has had their South Florida patients grinning from ear to ear for almost two decades. The state-of-the-art practice provides comprehensive dental care for all ages. The team is passionate about creating the perfect long-lasting smile with expertise, precision, and love. In fact, they are so dedicated to the best results that they stand behind and warranty all their services. Additionally, their office philosophy is simple; they believe in positivity and kindness. The devoted doctors and staff pride themselves on giving personal attention and compassion to always exceed their patients’ expectations.

Unforgettable smiles are designed through exceptional dentistry and Dr. Ronia Baker took the time to answer some questions about how her practice achieves this. What differentiates you from other dentists in the area? There are many things that differen-

tiate us from our competition. We provide the latest procedures such as fast braces (Six Month Smiles), beautiful veneers, sedation dentistry, and state-of-the-art technology such as digital low- radiation x-rays, laser whitening, and sedation dentistry. We also have an onsite denture lab so that we can provide fast, superior care to our denture patients. We treat our patients like family. Once you come in and meet our caring doctors and staff, you will never want to go anywhere else. What services does your practice offer? We offer comprehensive dental services, but we are known for our cosmetic dentistry. Our procedures include cleanings, fillings, whitening, veneers, fast braces, root canals, and Invisalign®. What can patients expect when they visit your practice? When patients enter our office, they are warmly greeted by one of our front desk members and are seen shortly after they enter. We value our patients’ time and do not believe in long waits. Our doctors take their time to diagnosis and explain the treatment(s) needed. Our treatment team coordinator will sit down with the patient to review any questions. If insurance is involved, we will do everything in our power to maximize a patient’s benefits.

What is your background? Where did you do your training? I went to the University of South Florida and double majored in Biology and Chemistry. I was fortunate to get into the prestigious Howard University College of Dentistry where I received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2002. To stay abreast of my profession, I continue to take courses in higher technology procedures. This allows me to give my patients the best possible care with the latest technology. What is special about your staff? We have an incredible, experienced, and caring staff. We continually immerse ourselves in continuing education by attending the most current educational courses. We strive to be the best because our patients deserve the best. What do you offer that is new in the field? We offer “Six Month Smiles” which are fast, clear braces for adults. Plus, we offer the latest cosmetic procedures such as thin, porcelain veneers. Do you accept insurance? Yes, we accept most dental insurance. We also offer 0% interest payment plans and in-house dental insurance. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you or your practice? We provide exceptional dentistry using the latest technology while our patients are in a comfortable and relaxed environment. Our doctors

CAN DO KID

Plantation Student Keeps His Eye on the Ball BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

lmost sixty rising high school juniors and seniors were invited to the Jackie Robinson Training Complex (JRTC) in Vero Beach this past summer to learn from former Major League players and coaches in a special amateur development experience which also served as a showcase for professional scouts and collegiate recruiters. The selected students received an exclusive invitation via recommendations by former Major Leagues, MLB, USA Baseball, RBI

programs, MLB Youth Academies, and other sources. The Breakthrough Series participants represented seventeen states from all over the country with Florida having nine players including Plantation’s Donovan Michael Hill. The star athlete began playing baseball in Plantation’s Little League since he was seven years old. This invitation is the third MLB sponsored camp he has been fortunate to attend. At JBTC, Hill had the opportunity to undergo unique athletic assessments consisting of performance vision screening, swing analysis, and precise physical testing. The data captured was used as a tool in the development and optimization of each individual player. “Donovan is an amazing example of a person that doesn’t take his blessings for granted. He is very

humble and has an amazing work ethic. He is always trying to find a way to get better. Personally, I think the kid is a gift from God and is blessed tremendously. I can’t wait to see him at the next level,” said his trainer Sean Campbell. The talented sixteen-year-old attended American Heritage School from first through tenth grade and is currently attending IMG Academy in Bradenton. Although, he’ll miss his friends he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go to one of the best baseball programs in the country. “He’s the kind of kid that wants to keep money in our car console to give to homeless people. He frequently gives away shoes and baseball equipment to people in need and likes to volunteer to help young kids at the Marlins Play Ball program,” exclaimed his proud mother Vivian Hill. “It’s no surprise that Donovan was born the same year the Florida Marlins won the World Series. He has walked around with a bat in hand

since he could walk,” added his father Michael Hill. When he is not playing baseball, the vivacious teen spends time At Marlins Park. He loves to go on the field and catch balls during the teams’ batting practice and he even gets instruction from coaches. Many of the players give him advice and tell him what he needs to do to play at the next level. “I have loved baseball my whole life. I love watching it, playing it, and being around it. After high school, I hope to play minor league baseball and one day play in the major leagues,” said Donovan Hill.

Rain or shine, the market will be open from 8:00 am- 2:00 pm. “I want to be the first in line at the door at 8 am,” exclaimed Cathy F., a big fan of the Annual Flea Market who attends every year. “I always bring a shopping bag or two. I never walk out of there empty-handed.” Rumor has it that it is the best place to shop for a variety of second-hand items (new items can be found too). From small household items, clothing, books, and toys to jewelry, antiques, and collectibles, there is something for everyone at every age! Another reason that the Annual Flea Market is well-liked with shoppers and vendors is the fact that

it is indoors. “It’s my most favorite way to spend a hot, sunny Saturday afternoon,” said Laura K. who is always on the hunt for vintage wrought-iron chairs. PHS members work overtime leading up to the event. They collect, organize and price donated items which they then sell at the show. They also sign up to sell refreshments in the lobby. All spaces for the Flea Market usually sell out in less than 3 weeks. “My favorite opportunity to volunteer because of all the different people I get to meet and of course, all the great bargains,” stated Wanda S., a PHS member. The event is the most popular fundraiser for the PHS which raises funds for the Plantation Historical Museum. The free admission museum is also supported by the City of Plantation. The neighborhood institution is known for featuring different exhibits every year. The current display is America in the 1960s: The Times They Were A-Changin’ which runs through

October 5th. “It is a way of supporting one of the best-hidden gems in Plantation: The Plantation Historical Museum,” said Paulette K. Chairwoman of the Annual Flea Market. Over the summer, the museum was able to organize fun and educational events such as a Trivia Game, a Karaoke Afternoon, a Bingo Lingo game and an Honor Our Veterans Day all in conjunction with the 1960s exhibit. Funds are also used to update museum equipment such as purchasing new microphones. “We really appreciate the Society organizing the Flea Market every year. The funds generated help to sponsor programs and events at the Museum,” said John Feeney Curator of the Plantation Historical Museum. Shopping at the Annual Flea Market is a great way to practice conservation. Many of these items may end up in landfills, but a few creative minds can see someone else’s trash and see the potential treasure.

Plantation Park Elementary Receives Top Grade BY BEVERLY PERKINS

N

ot only do students get graded, but schools get graded as well. Every year the Florida Department of Education gives each public K-12 school an A through F letter grade. For kindergarten through middle school, the school letter grade is based on a school’s FCAT scores. However, the high school grade formula is based on a combination of items in addition to the FCAT score. Luckily Plantation Park Elementary (PPE) doesn’t have to worry about the later, as the local school recently earned an “A” rating which is above average in school quality compared to other schools in Florida. Students performed above average on state tests and are making above average year-over-year in academic improvement. “There is a lot to be proud of at PPE! Congratulations on being graded an “A” school by the Florida Department of Education and increasing 60 points from the year before. Since the start of the Florida Standards and Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) five years ago, PPE has made progress and increased the total points each year. The hard work, perseverance, and focused attitudes paid off this year with their “A” rating. The student achievement results were some of the highest scores in the history of PPE,” explained Principal Julie Gittelman. One of the main goals of the school was to focus on learning gains, which is defined by the state of Florida to increase a specific point range from the prior year for those 3rd-5th graders that take the Florida Standards Assessment. The teachers differentiated instruction in small groups, after school tutoring, schoolspecific software programs, and parents reinforced skills learned at school at home. The learning gains of the lowest quartile made double-digit gains in both reading and math.

“Plantation Park Elementary’s success is based 100% on the hard work, dedication, experience and commitment from our administrative team, teachers, staff, students and parents. We are thrilled to be an “A” school and we are honored to be a part of such an amazing educational community,” said Stefanie Smith, Plantation Park Elementary PTA President. “The state grading system will never completely capture all of the wonderful things that are happening in our schools every day. I know we are the same wonderful school no matter what grade we are given. With that being said, it is really nice that the state of Florida and the entire community are recognizing the hard work that was achieved by everyone last year. We are an “A”ll Star School,” added Gittelman.

Plantation Middle School Awarded the ‘2019 Magnet School of Distinction’ BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he 2019-2020 school year is off to a great start at Plantation Middle School. For the third consecutive year, the neighborhood school was awarded the 2019 Magnet Schools of America (MSA) “Magnet School of Distinction” Award. MSA’s National Merit Awards program honors the top magnet schools in the United States. So, it’s an honor and a privilege that the Patriots earned it again. “These awards recognize magnet schools that demonstrate a commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation and diversity efforts, and consistent delivery of high-

quality educational services to all stakeholders,” as stated by MSA. The “Magnet School of Distinction Award” is the second level of awards given to magnet schools that have met all basic requirements outlined in the merit awards scoring rubric. The first award is the “Magnet School of Excellence Award” which are given to only a select group of magnet schools that have demonstrated the highest level of excellence in all areas of the merit award application. The visionary, innovative programs focus on educational themes such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Fine and Performing Arts, Career and Technical Education (CTE), World Languages (immersion and non-immersion), and International Baccalaureate, International Studies. Plantation Middle School is one of the few schools in Broward County that offers an International Baccalaureate program. Additionally, the school plans to continue a Chinese program which is taught by an instructor from China. Furthermore, the school is building partnerships in the area, including a unique endeavor with augmented reality company Magic Leap. Employees at the company, located nearby on Sunrise Boulevard, are constructing a “learning lab,” where students can pick up on modern tech-

nology skills. This year, the award-winning school is also seeking more volunteers, as part of an initiative launched by Plantation Councilmember Nick Sortal. He is asking the public to register at BrowardSchools.com/ Volunteer and take the time to help at Plantation Middle School, Mirror Lake Elementary or Peters Elementary. Because magnet schools are open to all students regardless of zip code, approximately 55% of “in-zone” children actually attend the school. Sortal pointed out that having schools that entice parents to stay rooted in Plantation help both the real estate economy and the sense of community. “As a leader in our city, I want to address a challenge that our residents are facing – even though municipal governments are not responsible for schools per se, I cannot control what our school board does. I can’t, nor do I want to, tell principals how to run their school. All I can do is to encourage anyone who cares to get involved and help work our way toward the top,” exclaimed Sortal.

ASK THE EXPERT

What Can I Do About My Bunion? BY DR. JOHN GOODNER

A

bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. It is part of your normal foot and not a growth of new bone. The foot bones are starting to spread out, making the bone more prominent. Here are answers to commonly asked questions about bunions and bunion surgery: What is the cause of bunions? Most commonly it is hereditary. Tight shoes will often bring out the problem sooner. Poor foot structure (i.e. flatfeet) may also contribute to the problem. Can I avoid getting bunions if my mother and grandmother have them? Generally, no. You may wear shoes that are wider in the toe box. This may delay the onset of bunions and prevent them from getting very painful. Eventually, a bunion will appear if you are predisposed to it. Do bunions get worse? Over time the bones in the feet spread out further making a bunion appear larger. It may take months to many years, but they will almost always get worse, especially if you are pronated or

flatfooted. Cartilage will start to wear thin and some degree of arthritis may develop. What causes the pain over the bunion? Shoes that are narrow put pressure on the skin, nerves and bone. Numbness or tingling may also develop as the nerve gets compressed against the bone by tight shoes. Can the bunion be corrected? Bunions can be corrected surgically if the bunion is painful and it is unresponsive to conservative care. In some cases, small bunions hurt much more than large bunions. Is it painful to have surgery? When done correctly by an experienced surgeon minimal pain is involved. We have done more than 5,000 bunion surgeries. Can I walk on it immediately after surgery? We advise people to stay off their foot for two or three days. A surgical boot is utilized for a period of six weeks to protect the area and allow it to heal properly. How quickly can I return to work after surgery? It usually requires four days of rest at home before returning to work. A special surgical shoe or boot is given to take stress off the area and prevent problems from developing postoperatively. How long will it take to get back into normal shoes? For everyone it is different. It will usually take four to six weeks to get back into flat shoes or sneakers. Heels may take two to three months.

Will I be able to resume sports after surgery? Stationery bicycles may be used one to two weeks after surgery. Running sports and activities may require six or more weeks. I had bunion surgery many years ago and it has come back. Can I do something about it? Yes. If the surgical procedure is done correctly a second time the results may be outstanding provided that there are no arthritic changes in the joint. If there are arthritic changes, many surgical options are available to correct the deformity. What is the long-term prognosis? In almost all cases, it is excellent. The earlier the treatment, the better the long-term prognosis because arthritic changes are minimized. ASK THE EXPERT

When is it Time for Adolescent Gynecology? BY DR. JAY COHEN

O

ne of the most frequently asked questions we often receive is, “What is the appropriate age to take my daughter to the gynecologist?” As a girl matures and enters her teenage years, she may experience problems with her menstrual cycle, acne or become sexually active. The majority of problems and concerns can be addressed with her pediatrician or family physician. However, if your daughter or the young teen in your care has problems with her cycle that include decreased quality of life, anemia, absences from school or work or is thinking of or has become sexually active, I advise that she establish care with a gynecologist. The thought of going to a gynecologist for the first time may make her feel nervous, embarrassed or even frightened if she doesn’t know what to expect. Additionally, she may not understand why she needs to go, especially if she is feeling fine. As a parent or guardian, you can make a significant difference in how she approaches her health and care, not only now, but in the years to come. Begin

this process by easing any concerns she may have and talk to her before her visit so she understands why the appointment is necessary and what to expect. Be sure to give her time to ask you questions as well. The Purpose for the Appointment Make sure your daughter or the young teen in your care knows that the primary focus of the appointment will be to share information. She can ask general health questions or ask about things that may feel more confidential. Also, let her know that although she may not have questions now, she may in the future, so it is important to have yearly appointments so she can get to know her gynecologist. Preparing for the Appointment It is helpful to know the types of questions we may ask, so she can be prepared. For instance, we will always ask when her last menstrual cycle was. Although she may feel uncomfortable when we ask certain personal questions, please advise her about the importance of answering these questions truthfully. Easing Concerns about Exams Teens may also have concerns about exams and testing. Help reassure her by explaining that her first visit may or may not include an external examination, and that an internal pelvic exam is usually not

required until a woman is 21 years of age, unless she is experiencing problems. Give Her the Option to Have You in the Room You daughter or the young teen in your care should also decide beforehand whether or not she would like you to join her in the exam room. Whatever she decides, be supportive, and make sure she also has some time alone with her care provider so she has an opportunity to share any information she may be too embarrassed to reveal with you in the room. Our physicians are here to help and want you and your daughter to have a positive experience when you visit us, whether it is your first appointment, or if you have seen us many times. Encourage your daughter or the young teen in your care to explore our website and learn more about the care and services our physicians provide. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Dr. Jay Cohen specializes in Obstetrics & Gynecology and is affiliated with Plantation General Hospital. He received his medical degree from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and has been in practice for more than 20 years. BY MAYOR LYNN STONER n July 6, 2019, at approximately 11:28 AM, the City of Plantation received an emergency call regarding an explosion at the Market on University shopping plaza located at 1041 S. University Drive. The force of the explosion could be felt up to two miles away, and people nearby shared stories of hearing what sounded like a loud crack of thunder and feeling their buildings shake. In fact, homeowners in the surrounding area reported windows being broken. Debris could be seen strewn throughout the Market shopping center, as well as along University Drive, SW 10th Street, and across the Fountains south parking lot. We are truly thankful that there were no fatalities, and that none of the injuries sustained were considered life-threatening. A search of the area was completed the same day as the explosion. Nineteen people were transported to area hospitals, and four were treated and released at the scene. A Family Reunification Center was opened at Plantation Central Park Multipurpose Center.

If you suffer from fibroids, it is important to identify factors that can determine the best possible treatment option for you. ▸▸ Size of the fibroid(s) – Small Fibroids (<2 cm) can be detected incidentally may not require any intervention. Larger fibroids (>4 cm) often associated with symptoms such as heavy bleeding and/or painful menses warrant further treatment. ▸▸ Number of fibroid(s) – Often, there may be multiple fibroids present within the wall of the uterus and they can intensify preexisting symptoms. ▸▸ Location of fibroid(s) – A fibroid attached to the outside of the uterus via a small stalk of tissue may not cause any symptoms. However, a protruding fibroid within the cavity of the uterine cavity may cause heavier menses and occasionally be associated with infertility. ▸▸ Your age – Treatment options and goals differ base on your age. ▸▸ Desire for future fertility – As certain medical and surgical options can affect your fertility; this must be discussed thoroughly before implementing any treatment options. For asymptomatic patients, treatment options can include close surveillance with ultrasounds to assess growth and change. For women with mild symptoms, non-steroidal inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Aleve, Naproxen can be used to alleviate pain and iron supplements can be used to help improve iron stores that may get depleted during a heavy menstrual cycle. These can all be used in addition to hormonal medications that include estrogen and/or progesterone. Newer medications that interfere with the signal from a small part of the brain called the pituitary to its receptors on the ovary may also be used with women. They can help defer or avoid surgery altogether. Certain patients may be eligible for procedures that can help shrink the fibroid (e.g.: Uterine Artery Embolization) while others may require only the removal of fibroids (myomectomy). Ultimately, a small group of patients will likely benefit most from complete removal of the uterus along with all fibroids (Hysterectomy). With a myriad of options to choose from, having a physician familiar with nuances of treatment options can help you get back to your healthy self in no time.

MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF

Back to School Notes BY DON TODD, PLANTATION FIRE CHIEF

I

t’s that time of year again when the calm, quiet mornings of summer are traded for the chaos of packing lunches, checking homework and loading everyone in the car for the commute to school and work. Summer is over and the kids are back at school. So, here are a few reminders to put in the back of your mind as you struggle to understand your child’s math homework or read to your little ones before bed. ▸▸ The hot weather is still with us and will be for some time. When you send the children off to school be sure they stay hydrated and ensure they always have a hat when going outdoors. ▸▸ It’s not always easy, but when packing their lunches try to follow the FDA’s “Balanced Plate” model in building nutritious meals that will keep them energized throughout the day. ▸▸ After school they will have lots of energy to burn and will be taking advantage of lingering day light. Use caution when driving during dusky hours. This is when visibility is the most difficult.

▸▸ Backyard pools are still a fun place to be after school and on weekends. Remember to continue to “Watch the Water-Watch the Kids.” ▸▸ A car full of kids can be hectic. Leaving children in heated cars has become a pervasive problem which has caused far too many tragedies. Remember, “Look before you lock.” ▸▸ If you are transporting young ones, have your car seat checked to ensure it is installed properly. Plantation residents can have their car seats checked FREE any Thursday morning, by calling for an appointment at 954-797-2150. Fire Prevention Week is October 6-12. Do you have a budding Van Gogh in your home? Or maybe the next DeMille? Now is their chance to display their talents during our annual “Fire Prevention Art & Literature Contest”. The contest is open to all students K-5 attending Plantation schools. Submit your best interpretation of the annual NFPA theme, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape, Plan and Practice Your Escape!” in the form of an essay, a poster, a video, a photo, or relief art. Winners in each category receive some great prizes and City-wide recognition. Each elementary school in the City received a participation packet.

Maidelyn and Hector Domenech escaped the Florida heat and headed out west for a visit to Sequoia National Park in California. Known for its larger than life sequoia trees, the dramatic landscape also features huge mountains, deep canyons, vast caverns, striking rock formations, quaint streams, abundant wildlife, and so much more. The Plantation couple laced up their sneakers and explored the natural wonders of the historic destination. All made for picture-perfect memories including a photo with Our City Plantation, a little wonder from home.
